NWA 1989: Tradition To Innovation

Recommended Posts

I don't know. I've never been keen on 'hardcore' and so my overriding memory of Funk being an old man covered in blood probably has something to do with it. It's entirely unfair, I know, but it's one of those cases of bad first impressions. Not really seen much of Dory, to be honest.

EDIT: It is not anything to do with his ability, just the idea of Terry Funk the hardcore icon puts me off.

Terry was not always like that. He had to become that way because he was so old and it was near the end of his career (heck who am I kidding he is probably still wrestling somewhere right now).

I mean he was an NWA Champion so he had to have been a good all-around wrestler at one point. Because I would highly doubt they would give that title to someone who sucks.

I completely agree. I think both he and Dory would have been skilled champions, Terry held it for fourteen months after all, but unfortunately that was well before my time. So all that leaves me is a, shall we say haggard, Terry Funk using a stapler on someone's head.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 1 December 1989

Location: Charles Koch Arena, Witchita Kansas (Mid South)

Attendance: 10,000

Overall Rating: C+

TV Rating: 2.29

The crowd wasn't happy as they expected more angles and interview segments.

I think this show might have actually hurt our popularity overall.

The Power Hour

In an extremely short match, The Gravedigger defeated Buzz Sawyer in 2:47 by pinfall with a Tombstone...D

In a match that had some good action but not much in the way of heat, Paul Orndorff defeated The Iron Sheik in 7:59 by pinfall...C

In a bout that featured great action and a good crowd, The Great Muta defeated Jerry Stubbs in 12:40 by pinfall with a Moonsault Press. The Great Muta makes defence number 1 of his NWA Television title...B

Pre Show: In a bout that featured great action and a good crowd, Bam Bam Bigelow defeated Flyin' Brian in 6:11 by pinfall with a Greetings from Asbury Park...B-

Pre Show: In a bout that featured great action and a good crowd, Road Warriors defeated Doom in 10:04 when Road Warrior Animal defeated Butch Reed by pinfall with a Doomsday Device...B

[The show opens with a video...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/clash.jpg

[...Showing the ups and downs at the Clash of the Champions. The Skyscrapers defeated the Road Warriors to become #1 contenders to the NWA World Tag Team Titles, The Steiner Brothers had a successful defense against the Wild Samoans, Ric Flair defeated Barry Windham to retain the NWA World Heavyweight Title and Sting defeated Ricky Steamboat to become the number one contender and face Ric Flair at Starrcade.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[Within the arena, the crowd rises as one trying to mug for the camera. Then the boos start to rain in when the crowd hears the music set to start off World Championship Wrestling...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting6.jpg

[...Sting steps out from the back and lets out an 'OOOWWWWW' before standing there as fireworks explode all around him. He looks to the crowd for a moment as some reach out to touch him. He goes to give a high five and then slides his hand back, running fingers through his hair and shaking his head. He makes his way down to the ring and slides inside, being handed a microphone...]

Sting

"I told everyone that I was going to come out here on World Championship Wrestling as the number one contender to the NWA World Heavyweight Title and guess what? I was right!"

[...The crowd boos and a 'We Want Flair' chant begins...]

Sting

"You can call for him all you want but he doesn't have the GUTS to come out here and stand in the same ring as me. I handed him a baseball bat a few weeks back and gave him a golden opportunity to hit me with it and he wouldn't do it. Do you really want that kind of man as your Champion? I didn't think so. Ric Flair, at Starrcade, you're going to see a real man as your NWA World Heavyweight Champion. You're going to see..."

[...Sting's words get cut off by the sound of trumpets and cheers from the crowd as they rise to their feet! Everyone, including Sting, looks toward the entrance ramp...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpg

[...The Nature Boy Ric Flair walks out wearing the NWA World Heavyweight Title and a flashy blue robe. Ric turns to the kids that Sting wouldn't high five and he gives them handshakes and points to the camera and everyone lets out a 'Whooooooo!' Ric smiles and walks down toward the ring where Sting looks on, a little worried about this development. Ric climbs the steel steps and enters the ring through the ropes...]

Sting

"You can't touch me, Ric! You can't touch me or you forfeit the NWA World Heavyweight Title!"

Ric Flair

"Listen up, little man. First of all, I heard that there was a party going on tonight right here in Wichita Kansas! Whoooooo!"

[...The crowd pops for the cheap plug...]

Ric Flair

"Now, Sting, I know I can't touch you but I heard you come out here and talk about being the man. That is a topic that I happen to know a little bit about. In order to be the man, you have to beat the man, Stinger. Right now with this NWA World Heavyweight Title belt around my waist, I am the man. Whooooo! Now, at Starrcade, this is my event, pal. Ric Flair IS Starrcade! Let's go back to the very first Starrcade: Ric Flair vs. Harley Race inside a cage for this belt: I won! Let's go back to the second Starrcade and Ric Flair vs. Dusty Rhodes: I won! Let's go back just one year ago to Starrcade 1988 and I happened to beat the man that you have as your tag team partner tonight: Lex Luger. Whoooo. Now we come to 1989 and Ric Flair vs. Sting for the greatest prize in wrestling today: The NWA World Heavyweight Title. You want this belt, Sting? Do you want it bad enough to beat me for it? Do you want it bad enough to walk that aisle at Starrcade and lock me in that Scorpion Deathlock and make me submit? We're going to see about that Stinger. We're going to see if your bite is as good as your bark. We're going to see if you can be the man. Whooooo."

[...Ric turns to leave but he's stopped by Sting...]

Sting

"Hold up, hold up, hold up Ric. You can't leave just yet. The party is just beginning here. There is something that I want almost as bad as I want that gold belt around your waist. I want to humiliate you, Ric. I want to make you suffer. You think you're the man? You think you can beat me? Why don't you put something else on the line added to the NWA World Heavyweight Title? I want the rights to the Four Horsemen name. That's right, Ric. If I beat you at Starrcade, or WHEN I beat you at Starrcade, I want to be able to make my own Four Horsemen. What do you say, Ric Flair? Do you have the GUTS to put it all on the line?"

[...Ric looks to the crowd for a moment and then sneers at Sting...]

Ric Flair

"You know what, Sting? You have a deal! But I want you to think long and hard before you walk that aisle because when I wrap your legs up in my Figure Four leglock, I might not let go until I break your legs. Just ask Sam Houston about that. Whooooo."

[...The trumpets play again and Ric turns to leave, getting out of the ring this time and heading to the back.]

Match #1

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/cactusjack3.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/rickymorton.jpg

Cactus Jack vs. Ricky Morton

[Ricky Morton came in the ring looking to pick up what some may deem as a major upset considering the way that Cactus Jack took out Steve Williams at the Clash. But Cactus was dominant in this bout from beginning to end. Cactus finished off Ricky Morton in less than two minutes with a Double Arm DDT and a pinfall: 1 -- 2 -- 3]

Winner: Cactus Jack (Via Pinfall @ 1:46)

Match Rating: C+

[...This one has Missy Hyatt mugging for the camera and blowing kisses as she stands beside 'Hot Stuff' Eddie Gilbert...]

Eddie Gilbert

"Terry Funk, you and Gary Hart and the rest of your cronies have been running roughshod over the NWA for long enough. That is why I have stepped in: 'Hot Stuff' Eddie Gilbert. I have given these fans someone to cheer for in a battle against you: Terry Funk. I am a man that they can be proud of and that they are proud of because I wrestle FOR these fans. I step in the ring night after night and I give it my all inside the ring. Terry Funk, at NWA's Starrcade, you and I are gonna settle things once and for all."

[...Eddie turns to Missy, who blows another kiss to the camera and escorts her away as we head back to the ring.]

Match #2

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/barrywindham2.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/JunkYardDog.jpg

Barry Windham vs. Junkyard Dog

[As Barry Windham walks down to the ring, a video plays in the corner showing highlights from his match with Ric Flair at the Clash of the Champions. When Windham came into the ring, JYD was already there and got down on all fours, attacking Windham with growls and headbutts to the knee! Windham went through the ropes to get away from JYD. When Windham came back in, he was vicious against JYD. He choked the Junkyard Dog with his bare hands, only breaking at the count of four. He took down JYD with a hard lariat but he wasn't done yet. Windham picked up JYD -- Running Bulldog! Windham made the cover, hooking the leg: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Barry Windham (Via Pinfall @ 9:49)

Match Rating: B-

[...Barry Windham got up and kicked JYD out of the ring as he got his arm raised. The crowd booed not just for him but for the two figures who walked down to the ring...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting6.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/luger.jpg

[...Sting and Lex Luger joined Barry Windham inside the ring and they stood on either side of Windham, raising his arms in victory...]

Sting

"Ohhhh Ric! Here are two of the men who will be joining me in the Four Horsemen after Starrcade. The fourth man will be in the building at Starrcade. You will just have to wait and see who it is."

[...Sting holds up one finger, two fingers, three fingers. The fourth one is still to come!]

Match #3

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/mikerotundo.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ScottSteiner22.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/missyhyatt.jpg

Mike Rotundo vs. Scott Steiner

[Talk about an excellent technical wrestling match. You don't get much better than the man from Syracuse versus the man from Michigan. The two men started the match trading amateur holds with both men gaining quick near-falls and wrestling to a stalemate. Rotundo was the one who snapped first and started throwing punches to liven things up. He whipped Scott Steiner into the turnbuckle and chased him in but Scott caught him around the waist! Scott twisted around -- belly to belly suplex! Rotundo hit the mat hard and Scott made a cover: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout! Scott pulled Rotundo up just as Sid Vicious and Dan Spivey began making their way down to the ringside area. Rotundo managed to gain the advantage and sent Scott Steiner out of the ring! Sid slammed Scott into the ring post outside the ring and then tossed him back inside. Mike Rotundo looked down with a smile on his face. He picked up Scott Steiner and smacked him around a little bit. Rotundo picked up Steiner but Scott managed to drop down behind him! Scott Steiner sent Rotundo to the ropes -- Frankensteiner! Scott hit his finisher and turnd to make a cover -- attack by the Skyscrapers led by Theodore R. Long! Referee Nick Patrick calls for the DQ!]

Winner: Scott Steiner (Via Disqualification @ 10:29)

Match Rating: B-

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/theadorerlong.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/SidVicious.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/danspivey2.jpg

[...Long stood in the background barking orders to his two men. Vicious and Spivey took down Scott Steiner with a double clothesline! We learn from the announcers that Rick Steiner isn't here because of an emergency at home. Sid Vicious pulls Scott Steiner in and then lifts him up in the air -- Double Power Bomb! The crowd boos as Scott Steiner has been folded up like an accordion! Vicious and Spivey look down at Scott Steiner for a moment and Theodore R. Long calls them off as the fun police arrive.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[Time for one more of our pre-recorded interviews...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/RickySteamboat3.jpg

[...This time it's Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat standing in front of the NWA banner...]

Ricky Steamboat

"Lex Luger, last week you attacked me in the middle of the ring. You laid me out with a baseball bat and what was it that you said? 'Here lies your number one contender' wasn't it? Well, you were right in a sense. I didn't beat Sting at the Clash and become the number one contender to the NWA World Heavyweight Title but I did speak with the Championship Committee and they have granted me a United States Title shot at Starrcade! That means that you and I are going to go one on one in the center of the ring. There will be no attacks from behind. There will just be you and me face-to-face. We will see if you can stand the heat from the Dragon!"

[...Ricky goes into a martial arts stance and we head back to the ring.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/garyhart.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/tomzenk.jpg

Terry Funk vs. Z-Man

[We are down to our semi main event here and the crowd really booed the Funker when he came out to the ring. Gary Hart covered Terry Funk's ears so he wouldn't have to hear the boos. Nor would he have to hear the cheers for the Z-Man! When both wrestlers were in the ring, the match began with Terry Funk going right after Z-Man! Funk hit Z-Man with big forearm shots and sent him to the ropes. Z-Man ducked a clothesline and came back -- flying clothesline by Z-Man! Z-Man waits for Funk to stand -- dropkick! Funk staggers backward and falls out of the ring! Gary Hart's eyes go wide and Z-Man claps his hands together, getting the crowd into the match even further. Funk rolls back in the ring and goes right to the eyes of Z-Man! He bites him on the forehead! Z-Man tries to block it out but he is backed into a corner. Funk sends hard shoulderblocks to the chest...]

[...Funk remained in control up to the six minute mark where Z-Man was able to fight off a sleeperhold with a jawbreaker! Z-Man had the crowd clapping and stomping their feet. Someone slipped out from under the ring as both men were getting to their feet. It's Cactus Jack! What is he doing here??? Z-Man doesn't see him and moves over into a corner beginning to stomp his foot. Terry Funk is almost to his feet as the crowd claps with each stomp. Funk has the referee's attention and Cactus trips Z-Man! Cactus grabs Z-Man by both legs and crotches him on the ring post! That HAD to hurt! Cactus hides back under the ring as Funk comes over and pulls Z-Man in -- Texas Piledriver! Funk makes the cover, hooking the leg: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Terry Funk (Via Pinfall @ 8:26)

Match Rating: A

Match #5

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting6.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/luger.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/RickySteamboat3.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/PaulOrndorff4.jpg

Sting and Lex Luger vs. Ricky Steamboat and Paul Orndorff

[it's main event time here on World Championship Wrestling and what a main event we have for you. Lex Luger and Paul Orndorff started the match comparing their physiques. The crowd booed Luger and cheered for Orndorff! Luger got frustrated by the boos and charged right into an Orndorff clothesline! Luger popped back up and was clotheslined down again! Orndorff catches Luger with a hip toss and then tags out to Steamboat. Steamboat comes in and catches Luger with an armdrag into an armbar. Classic Ricky Steamboat wrestling in focusing in on the arm of Luger. Luger managed to pull his way to his feet and used Steamboat's hair to drag him over into the corner and tag out to Sting. Sting put a few boots to the gut of Steamboat and took control. Sting and Luger began using frequent tags to wear down Steamboat, while keeping a fresh man in the ring at all times...]

[...At around the eight minute mark, Steamboat began working his way toward his corner. Luger had him in a front facelock but Steamboat was somehow powering his way toward Orndorff. Luger let the hold go and turned punching Orndorff -- blocked! Orndorff floors Luger with a punch! Steamboat leaps and tags in Orndorff! The former Mr. Wonderful with a big clothesline to Luger! He turns and hits Sting with a punch that floors the top contender! Orndorff sends Luger into a corner and charges in -- corner clothesline! Sting moves back into his corner and reaches for a tag as Luger staggers. Orndorff climbs to the second turnbuckle and leaps -- Luger moves and Orndorff lands hard on his backside! Luger tags in Sting and Sting comes in throwing punches down on Orndorff. Sting picks up Orndorff and whips him into the turnbuckle! Sting steps back and charges -- Stinger Splash! He hit the Stinger Splash in the corner and Orndorff falls to the mat. Sting makes a cover, hooking the leg: 1 -- 2 -- Luger clotheslines down Steamboat -- 3!]

Winners: Sting and Lex Luger (Via Pinfall @ 12:44)

Match Rating: B

[...The crowd boos this victory by Sting and Lex Luger! Sting puts the boots to Orndorff and pushes him out of the ring to the floor. Another figure comes running down to the ring...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/barrywindham2.jpg

[...It's Barry Windham! The crowd boos Windham as he comes down and joins Luger in the stomps of Ricky Steamboat! Windham lifts Steamboat and places him in the corner! Windham climbs up -- Superplex! Steamboat hits the mat hard! Windham, Sting and Luger stand tall in the ring with their arms raised and we're out of time! We'll see you next week!]

NWA POWER HOUR*

Friday Week 2 December 1989

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. The Gravedigger

Now this is an interesting one. I don't think Bigelow is done being the monster yet, but obviously Digger is gonna get to have a solid run yet and will likely not just be cannon fodder. But at this point, that's what he will be.

Butch Reed vs. Flyin' Brian

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Austin Idol

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 2 December 1989

Dick Slater vs. Junkyard Dog

Say what happened to Orton lately?

Rip Rogers vs. Z-Man

Ugh. Lame match. One jobber losing to another.

Barry Windham vs. Jason Knight

Thanks for coming, Jason.

Dory Funk, Jr. vs. Eddie Gilbert

Really interesting matchup here, I like seeing Hotstuff get a small push to face off with the Funker.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Paul Orndorff

Bammer kinda slid a little bit lately from where he was perched at, but here he can start it back up again.

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat

Really digging the feud for the Horsemen name now, figuring the champ and US contender will get some steam here.

NWA POWER HOUR

Friday Week 2 December 1989

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. The Gravedigger

No Jesus push for the Gravedigger yet!

Butch Reed vs. Flyin' Brian

Butch is making progress... he's out of the dark matches at least. Pillman has more upside.

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Austin Idol

If we were in Memphis maybe Austin would have a chance!

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 2 December 1989

Dick Slater vs. Junkyard Dog

Re-capture a little momentum to pass on to someone else!

Rip Rogers vs. Z-Man

See above. Also despite my lack of love for him, he is putting on good matches!

Barry Windham vs. Jason Knight

Windham's push to continue

Dory Funk, Jr. vs. Eddie Gilbert

Nice ti see Dory climb back in the ring. A win for Gilbert will do him wonders in his feud with Terry. I smell a DQ.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Paul Orndorff

Toughest match of the night for me. I'll go with Bam Bam to nick it with possible interference from Windham.

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat

Nice match-up on paper, Flair and Steamboat to shade it.

Bam Bam gets a little mo, then loses it to Orndorff, who seems more high profile now

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat

Steamboat with a pin on Muta....

congrats on DOTM.... A well deserved victory!

Thanks for the link :) that was a freaking masterpiece :D

No problem on that. I figured everyone could get some enjoyment out of that match. :D

Austin Idol? What hole did you dig him up from?:D

However I would love to see the great Austin Idol slap the Las Vegas Leglock on those skinny legs of Muta. The Universal Heartrob lives forever

Like with Jerry Stubbs, I got Austin Idol on a trade agreement with CWF. Luckily this means that Idol doesn't have to travel very far since in real life he wouldn't ride in a plane or anything IIRC.

congrats on DOTM.... A well deserved victory!

Thanks for the congratulations! That marks my first ever Real World DOTM victory so am still kinda beaming about it. lol. It was a close match, though with only a few votes of seperation.

Thanks for the reminder to post, Angel. On Friday I had to go to the emergency room, where they sent me to a dentist to have my wisdom tooth removed. I've been a little out of it, so....

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. The Gravedigger

No need to go completely over-the-top with Mean Mark Callous.

Butch Reed vs. Flyin' Brian

Pillman continues to impress.

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Austin Idol

I like this style of having the TV title main event the B show, every week. It just makes sense.

Dick Slater vs. Junkyard Dog

Both are jobbers at this point, but JYD is a far more valuable one.

Rip Rogers vs. Z-Man

Much as it pains me, Zed-Man picks up a decisive victory. Probably with Sweet Chin Music.

Barry Windham vs. Jason Knight

Luckily, Barry Windham makes me forget all about Zenk. Rough night for Jason Knight.

Dory Funk, Jr. vs. Eddie Gilbert

Hi Dory! Thanks for stopping by. Terry will definitely get involved here, either causing the DQ, or taking Hot Stuff to town afterwards.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Paul Orndorff

A great tilt here. This one's tough to call. Neither guy is being getting heavy focus, and both are roughly in the same spot. I'm going with the Bammer, just because I've always preferred Orndorff as a heel.

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat

Great main event. This gives Muta another chance to shine on the big stage. Ric Flair, though, tips the scales against just about anyone. I'd personally love to see Steamer catch Funk in a roll-up, out of the Texas Piledriver. Classic Dragon.

Ouch! I'm sorry to hear that! I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out at once so I do know how you feel about having them removed and all. Hope you feel better soon. Make sure to keep the area clean.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 2 December 1989

Dick Slater vs. Junkyard Dog

JYD at least is someone I can recognise without having to wiki first.

Rip Rogers vs. Z-Man

Having just put on an A-rated match he's not going to be jobbing to Rip.

Barry Windham vs. Jason Knight

Jason Knight is the NWA's resident Ted Brady...

Dory Funk, Jr. vs. Eddie Gilbert

Funks reunited? Who knows, but Eddie is the one getting the push at the moment.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Paul Orndorff

Really, really tough call. Got to go with my firey bald guy though.

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat

Ric Flair is the man, whoooo! If Sting doesn't appear during or after this match I will be shocked.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 2 December 1989

Location: Coors Event Center Boulder, Colorado (Mid South)

Attendance: 10,000

Overall Rating: B+

TV Rating: 2.54

There was a feeling that a number of the angles used did not reach the standards set by the in-ring action.

This show can be considered a success, it should have increased our popularity.

The Power Hour

In a bout that featured great action and average heat, The Gravedigger defeated Bam Bam Bigelow in 7:48 by pinfall with a Tombstone...B-

In a match that had some good action and average heat, Flyin' Brian defeated Butch Reed in 7:52 by pinfall...C+

In a match that had some good action but not much in the way of heat, The Great Muta defeated Austin Idol in 7:36 by pinfall with a Moonsault Press. The Great Muta makes defence number 2 of his NWA Television title...C

Match #1

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/dickslater.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/JunkYardDog.jpg

Dick Slater vs. Junkyard Dog

[The night began within the ring as the man who was kicked out of J-Tex Corporation faced off with another man who has been within a slump lately in the Junkyard Dog. Both of these men showed some strength within the ring, with both of them firing in some shots to their opponent as we headed on the road toward Starrcade. It was the Junkyard Dog who took control in the latter stages of the match. He lifted Dick Slater onto his shoulder and took him down the Big Thumb Power Slam that turnd into a cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Junkyard Dog (Via Pinfall @ 8:09)

Match Rating: B-

[...JYD got up and celebrated but the celebration was short-lived as another wrestler came running down and slid in the ring...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/boborton.jpg

[...Cowboy Bob Orton, Jr. attacked JYD with a rope and cowbell, choking the life out of the man who just recently had a match. He beat on JYD and tossed him over the top rope, choking him with that rope until the fun police came out to break things up.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[The crowd booed the actions of Bob Orton, Jr. as the fun police tried to help JYD to the back. As that occured, we headed to a video from the interview area...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/missyhyatt.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/RickSteiner3.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ScottSteiner22.jpg

[...As usual, Missy Hyatt mugged for the camera and blew kisses and fixed her hair within the background as the two Steiners took center stage...]

Rick Steiner

"Skyscrapers, last week you attacked my brother and I don't like that. From now on, if you want to attack us you do it face-to-face and one-on-one. At least be men about it. If you really want to be men, then you'll just wait until Starrcade where my brother and I can take care of you Steiner-style."

Scott Steiner

"That's right, Rick. I know you would have been there for me last week if you were in the building. Blood is thicker than water. Skyscrapers, if you want to attack us then you should know that my brother and I are gonna stick together. And I can promise you that his bite is worse than his bark."

[...Rick 'woofed' for the camera and Missy blew another kiss and we headed back to the ring.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #2

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/RipRogers.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/tomzenk.jpg

Rip Rogers vs. Z-Man

[Not sure there is a single person in the arena who thought that Rip Rogers had a chance against the Z-Man. Compared to many matches, including Z-Man's last match, this one was a bit of a flop and definitely one-sided. Z-Man took down Rogers with a body slam and then moved over to a corner beginning to stomp his foot. The crowd began clapping along with the stomp and Rogers climbed to his feet. He turned -- Super Kick! Z-Man made a quick cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Z-Man (Via Pinfall @ 2:55)

Match Rating: C

[...Z-Man stood up and raised his arms in celebration before he was hit from behind with a chair!...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/cactusjack3.jpg

[...Cactus Jack had come through the crowd behind the Z-Man and Cactus stood over him. Cactus reached down and began tearing at the Z-Man's face! The crowd booed this sneak attack by Cactus Jack. Cactus lifted the Z-Man and hooked him -- Double Arm DDT! Cactus looked down at him and gave his trademark 'BANG! BANG!' as the fun police showed up to shut things down.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[As Z-Man was attended to, the focus turned to another video...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpg

[...This one had the Nature Boy Ric Flair standing in front of an 'NWA' sign...]

Ric Flair

"Whooooo! Stinger, you have shown your true colors bare for everyone to see. You have alligned yourself with men like Lex Luger and Barry Windham and now you want the Four Horsemen name? You say you've got a fourth name to reveal at Starrcade? Well, sign me up for Starrcade because I want to see exactly who it is that you're gonna bring out that can compete with the original Horsemen, pal. There is nobody in this business that is any better than Ric Flair. Whooooo. At Starrcade, you and I are gonna battle to see which one of us is better. We're gonna fight to see just who is going to lead the Horsemen into the '90's. Will it be Ric Flair or will it be Sting? At Starrcade, we are going to find out the answer to the question of what's causing all this? And you're gonna learn that to be the man, you have to beat the man! Whooooooo!"

[...Ric smiled and looked down to the gold belt around his waist before we headed back to the ring.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #3

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/barrywindham2.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/jasonknight.jpg

Barry Windham vs. Jason Knight

[Another match that was completely one-sided, though would it really surprise anyone? Has Jason Knight even competed in a match that was half-way open? Probably not. Windham had control and he stood out with a good performance throughout the match. Windham took down Knight with a Running Bulldog and then made the cover as he held up three fingers: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Barry Windham (Via Pinfall @ 2:18)

Match Rating: B

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[As Windham celebrated his victory, another video began to play...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/cactusjack3.jpg

[...This one showed Cactus Jack sitting backstage against a wall rocking back and forth. With each rock, the back of his head was hitting the wall...]

Cactus Jack

"All my life I have been treated as the outcast. I have been treated as the miscreant because of what I look like and the scars that I have on my body. When I was a little kid nobody wanted to play with me. I HAD TO SIT ALONE AT THE LUNCH TABLE! I watched as the jocks sat together and every other group sat together but nobody wanted Cactus Jack. Nobody wanted to be friends with a freak. Z-Man, you are the NWA's representation of everything that I have come to hate. You have fans rally around you because you look strong and muscled and some say you are good-looking. But at the end of the day and after fighting with me, you're gonna feel my pain, Z-Man. You're gonna feel what it's like to be a freak as I put scar after scar on your body. And as I mar your flesh over and over again I am going to smile because I know that you are one less muscled man that is going to laugh at me. BANG! BANG!"

[...Cactus gets to his feet and walks away as the camera zooms in to where he'd been hitting his head and there's blood on the wall. Then it's back to the ring.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/DoryFunkJr3.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/eddiegilbert-1.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/missyhyatt.jpg

Dory Funk, Jr. vs. Eddie Gilbert

[The fans were definitely surprised to see the aged Dory Funk, Jr. within the ring since he had retired but having him here in this match against his brother's opponent at Starrcade was a stern test for Eddie Gilbert. Dory showed that he's still got it inside the ring as he was in rare form, getting several near falls early on against 'Hot Stuff.' Eddie, of course, had Missy Hyatt at ringside who posed and blew kisses whenever the camera was on her. Dory went for the Funk Spinning Toe Hold at around the five minute mark but he was kicked off by Gilbert. Gilbert started making his comeback. The match was definitely taking a toll on Dory and Gilbert set him up for a Piledriver only to be clotheslined by Terry Funk, causing the DQ!]

Winner: Eddie Gilbert (Via Disqualification @ 6:24)

Match Rating: B-

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/garyhart.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpg

[...Gary Hart kept Missy Hyatt back as Terry Funk went to work on Gilbert. Funk ran him into the turnbuckle and Dory joined in with a double clothesline on Gilbert! Terry set Gilbert up for a Texas Piledriver and Dory climbed to the second rope -- Spiked Piledriver! The crowd booed as Terry got up and hugged his brother! Dory raised Terry's arm and Gary Hart joined them in the ring to celebrate.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[Another wrestler had to be attended to after a match and the focus turned to another video...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/barrywindham2.jpg

[...This time Barry Windham was backstage following his earlier match against Jason Knight...]

Barry Windham

"I didn't even break a sweat and that's exactly what is going to happen to you, Paul Orndorff. Sure they call you Mr. Wonderful but when we step through those ropes and face-off, they're gonna call me the winner. I have two men to watch my backs in Lex Luger and Sting and a third man to be revealed at Starrcade. Paula, at Starrcade, I am going to put you in your place."

[...Barry flashed three fingers and then it was back to the ring.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #5

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/bambambigelow.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/PaulOrndorff4.jpg

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Paul Orndorff

[bam Bam Bigelow was definitely upset following an upset loss to newcomer The Gravedigger on the Power Hour so he was looking to send a message in this match against Paul Orndorff. Orndorff, though, is looking to send a message of his own to his Starrcade opponent: Barry Windham. Both men held the advantage through various parts of the match. They showed great chemistry together inside the ring. At around the 4 minute mark, Bam Bam Bigelow went for an avalanche in the corner but Orndorff moved out of the way. Orndorff sent a kick to the leg of Bigelow and then hooked him -- big time vertical suplex from Orndorff! He really showed his power there! Orndorff signalled for the end and lifted Bam Bam Bigelow between his legs -- Piledriver! Orndorff made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3! What a big win for Orndorff!]

Winner: Paul Orndorff (Via Pinfall @ 6:20)

Match Rating: B

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #6

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/greatmuta.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/garyhart.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/RickySteamboat3.jpg

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat

[it is main event time and the crowd is on their feet for what promises to be an amazing match with all four competitors having experience within the ring. Two of the competitors have already been seen tonight with Terry Funk attacking Eddie Gilbert and Ric Flair having an interview segment and those are the two that started the match. Ric managed to get Funk in the corner early for some hard chops to the chest. Funk managed to stagger out of the corner and throw some hard punches to the head of Flair! He knocked Flair down with one of the punches and Funk tagged out to Muta. Muta sized up Flair as Flair pulled to his feet and he struck with those lightning fast karate kicks that had Flair stunned by the ropes. A kick to the head took Flair down and the television champ covered the world heavyweight champ: 1 -- 2 -- Shoulder Up! The crowd cheered as Flair got that shoulder off the canvas. Muta pulled Flair up and whipped him across the turnbuckle. Muta hit a handspring and went for a back elbow but Flair moved! Flair lit up Muta's chest with chops and then tagged out to Steamboat...]

[...The Dragon stuck on Muta early, eventually knocking the tv champ out of the ring! Steamboat wasn't content waiting on the sidelines and he leaped over the top rope landing on top of Muta! Gary Hart got the referee's attention as Steamboat celebrated his move and Terry Funk mowed him down with a clothesline! Funk helped Muta back in the ring and hit a hard elbow shot to the top of Steamboat's head before sending Steamboat back in the ring. Terry got the tag from Muta and Funk started a good battle with Steamboat in the ring and got the better of The Dragon. Steamboat became the face-in-peril for about two minutes as Funk and Muta exchanged tags in and out of the ring. Muta was in the ring, locking on a front face lock and looking for a submission out of Steamboat as the crowd raised and roared and clapped trying to get Steamboat to get up. Steamboat fed off the crowd and got up to his feet, throwing some punches to Muta. Steamboat broke the hold and a double clothesline sent both men to the mat. Both men crawled toward their corners and both men made tags at around the same time...]

[...Flair came in like a house on fire! He raked the eyes of Funk! He struck him with a knee to the gut and sent him into the corner for some chops to the chest! Flair took Funk down with a hanging vertical suplex and made a cover: 1 -- 2 -- broken up by Muta! Steamboat came in to make the save and he battled Muta down to the outside. Eddie Gilbert came walking down the ramp, holding his head but he was headed toward the ring. Terry Funk started a comeback on Flair until he saw Eddie Gilbert! Gary Hart tried to get the referee's attention but that just distracted him further. Eddie crossed his arms across his chest and stared at Funk. Funk took a swipe at Eddie but couldn't quite reach him. Flair crawled over and hit Funk with a low blow and then rolled him up as the referee turned around: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat (Via Pinfall @ 7:43)

Match Rating: A*

[...Eddie Gilbert left the ringside area as Gary Hart and Terry Funk complained to the referee. Ric and Ricky left the ring with Ricky Steamboat unknowing of how Flair got the pinfall. The Great Muta joined Gary Hart and Terry Funk outside the ring as they complained to the official. Ricky Steamboat and Ric Flair paused midway up the ramp as the curtain parted and...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting6.jpg

[...Sting walked out carrying a black baseball bat in his hand! Sting eyed Steamboat and Flair for a moment and we're out of time! We'll see you next week for World Championship Wrestling!]

Another great show, Angel. I should have known better than to go with Bam Bam, after he hadn't been on TV in a while.

The Iron Sheik vs. Eddie Gilbert

Iron Sheik continues his job-to-retirement tour.

Butch Reed vs. The Gravedigger

You proved last week that 'Digger is getting a serious push, right out of the gate. He won't be losing any matches on the Power Hour, period.

Bob Orton vs. Paul Orndorff

Orton is feuding with JYD, who hasn't done anything but lose, except to even bigger jobbers. Orndorff is getting ready to face Barry Windham, who was in an A rated match, at CotC IX. No brainer.

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Robert Gibson

Muta looks to be getting a long Television title run. Well, long by TV Title standards.

Wild Samoans vs. Road Warriors

Rematch from Halloween Havoc!!! The Road Warriors won't be returning the favour, in this one.

Dick Slater vs. Eddie Gilbert

With relative ease.

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Jason Knight

Muta piles on the wins. He must be doing wonders for the Prestige of the title.

Terry Funk vs. Junkyard Dog

I must admit that I really like the idea of your two main Jobbers-to-the-Stars feuding with each other. It's like they're trying to prove that, although their both JTTS, they're not the biggest JTTS.

Lex Luger and The Skyscrapers vs. Ric Flair and The Steiner Brothers

US Champ & Tag Contenders vs. World Champ & Tag Champs

The scales aren't balanced here. Luger =/= Flair.

This is a great rub for the 'Scrapers and Steiners, though.
