NWA 1989: Tradition To Innovation

Recommended Posts

NWA POWER HOUR*

Friday Week 3 December 1989

The Iron Sheik vs. Eddie Gilbert

Ah, being midcard job material. Maybe that'll make Sheik humble.

Butch Reed vs. The Gravedigger

Really surprised to see the immense depush for Bigelow on the last show. Obviously huge things in line for the Gravetaker.

Bob Orton vs. Paul Orndorff

Ha, match of former associates. Nifty.

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Robert Gibson

Man, the Express really need a kick in the tail to go up the card a little. So weird seeing them at JTTS level here.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 3 December 1989

Wild Samoans vs. Road Warriors

When in doubt, the Warriors win. Though a DQ wouldn't shock me to give them a match at Starrcade. C'mon, the Road Warriors HAVE to be doing something at Starrcade!

Dick Slater vs. Eddie Gilbert

At least you answered my question of where Cowboy was at very well. Would like to point out how much I hate the pic that you use for Gilbert here. I know it's the one he's set to in the database, but ugh. Just looks so bad. Heel turn him sometime soon so that you can use a better picture please? lol

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Jason Knight

Nothing to see or say here, just moving along. Very nice to see the title defended constantly though, even if it is just jobber squash after jobber squash.

Terry Funk vs. Junkyard Dog

Funker getting himself more momentum in the feud with Hotstuff.

Lex Luger and The Skyscrapers vs. Ric Flair and The Steiner Brothers

Were it Stinger in the match instead of Lex, I would say the heels gain momentum tonight. But it's not.

Bam Bam...lost. I am going to have to rethink my perception of this universe :D

Great, great show and a huge main event fully deserving an A*.

Eventually someone I like is going to win...I hope! :p

Dick Slater vs. Eddie Gilbert

Quite looking forward to this Gilbert-Funk feud.

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Jason Knight

No matter how universe shattering Bam Bam's defeat was, in no parallel world is Jason Knight winning this match.

Terry Funk vs. Junkyard Dog

Yes, you read that correctly. I. Have picked. Terry Funk. I told you my perception has changed!

Lex Luger and The Skyscrapers vs. Ric Flair and The Steiner Brothers

Flair edges it really. Should be a good bout, but maybe not as good as last weeks...Woooo!

The Iron Sheik vs. Eddie Gilbert

Sheik is a JTTS nowadays

Butch Reed vs. The Gravedigger

If Gravedigger didnt lose to Bam Bam, he wont lose to Reed

Bob Orton vs. Paul Orndorff

This match is main event material in 1985... in 1989 it serves to elevate Orndorff

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Robert Gibson

defense #3 for Muta

*NOTE: NWA Power Hour predictions WILL count toward the prediction contest. However, it will not be given a full writeup as it is a B-Show.

Good matchup but Road Warriors are still the road warriors

Dick Slater vs. Eddie Gilbert

Gilbert going places and Slater is not

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Jason Knight

Muta dominates every aspect of this match

Terry Funk vs. Junkyard Dog

We've got some great 1985 WWF matches going on this week... except its 1989 and Funk wins big

Lex Luger and The Skyscrapers vs. Ric Flair and The Steiner Brothers

Going with the good guys...

NWA POWER HOUR*

The Iron Sheik vs. Eddie Gilbert

Hach-Puh! The Shiek is yesterday's news!

Butch Reed vs. The Gravedigger

Seems like the Jesus push is on after all for Mean Mark!

Bob Orton vs. Paul Orndorff

If only the Rowdy One was in the NWA at this point

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Robert Gibson

You can say what you will about Muta, he's a fighting champion at least

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Wild Samoans vs. Road Warriors

Road Warriors = Greatest US Tag Team of all time

Dick Slater vs. Eddie Gilbert

Ex-J-Tex fails to win over his old friends by dropping to Gilbert

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Jason Knight

Squash-tastic for Muta

Terry Funk vs. Junkyard Dog

By DQ. I see Eddie Gilbert getting his revenge.

Lex Luger and The Skyscrapers vs. Ric Flair and The Steiner Brothers

Although my gut instinct says Flair and The Steiners should win, The Skyscrapers have to go into Starrcade looking strong with Scott and Rick the underdogs (despite being champions). Likewise, the drama of Flair/Sting and Steamboat/Luger will be served by having Flair look a little weaker and Luger a little stronger. Rick Steiner to eat the pin from Sid.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 3 December 1989

Location: Don Haskins Center El Paso Texas (Mid South)

Attendance: 10,000

Overall Rating: B

TV Rating: 2.37

The crowd wasn't happy as they expected more angles and interview segments.

I think this show might have actually hurt our popularity overall.

The Power Hour

In a match that had some good action and average heat, 'Hotstuff' Eddie Gilbert defeated The Iron Sheik in 5:55 by submission with a Figure Four Leglock...C

In an extremely short match, The Gravedigger defeated Butch Reed in 3:58 by pinfall with a Tombstone...C+

In a bout that featured great action and average heat, Paul Orndorff defeated 'Cowboy' Bob Orton in 5:33 by pinfall after a distraction from Junkyard Dog...B-

In a bout that featured great action and a good crowd, The Great Muta defeated Robert Gibson in 6:09 by pinfall with a Moonsault Press. The Great Muta makes defence number 3 of his NWA Television title...B-

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[The show begins within the Don Haskins Center with the crowd on their feet. They are ready for some major NWA action! Boos echo through the crowd as familiar music begins...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting6.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/luger.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/barrywindham2.jpg

[...Sting, Lex Luger and Barry Windham all walk out holding up three fingers. The crowd boos the three of them as they walk arrogantly down to the ring. They enter the ring and Luger flexes to boos from the crowd. Sting releases an 'OOOWWW!' and the crowd boos.]

Sting

"Boo me all you want, little Stingers, because no matter what you say I am going to be NWA World Heavyweight Champion heading into the new year. 1990 is going to be the year of the Stinger! This will also be the year of the 4 Horsemen. We may only have three right now but the fourth man is coming at Starrcade. Tell 'em Barry."

Barry Windham

"You're right, Stinger. Our fourth man will be in the building in a couple of weeks at Starrcade. Who will it be? You'll find out then. But also at Starrcade, the three of us have some business to take care of. Paul Orndorff, you've got my special attention at the biggest pay-per-view of the year. They used to call you Mr. Wonderful? After Starrcade, they'll be calling you Mr. Vegetable. Right, Lex?"

Lex Luger

"That's right, Barry. At Starrcade, they'll be calling me a Dragon Slayer. Look at these arms, guys? Does Ricky Steamboat really think that he has a chance? He better not. He'd be better off not even showing up."

Sting

"Gentlemen, at Starrcade, three will become IV. OOOWWW!"

[...All three men hold up three fingers as Sting's music hits and the three men head to the back.]

Match #1

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/samu2.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/fatu6.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/animal3.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/hawk3.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/paulellering.jpg

Wild Samoans vs. Road Warriors

[A definite hard-hitting match to begin the show tonight. Neither of these teams have a match at Starrcade right now so both will be trying to show why they deserve to be at the granddaddy of them all! A definite lack of selling by both teams as members of each team seemed to pop back up after every move. The Road Warriors got the advantage toward the end and Hawk went to the top turnbuckle as Animal lifted Samu onto his shoulders. Hawk leaped -- DOOMSDAY DEVICE! Samu got turned inside out! Animal makes the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: Road Warriors (Via Pinfall @ 7:42)

Match Rating: C+

[...Ric Flair, The Steiner Brothers and Missy Hyatt are shown in front of the NWA logo with Missy mugging for the camera...]

Ric Flair

"Hold up there, little girl. You be good and maybe I'll let you have a ride on Space Mountain tonight. Whooooo! Speaking of tonight, take a look at all this gold the three of us. We are a collection of superstar wrestlers. Ric Flair with the NWA World Heavyweight Title, The Steiner Brothers with the NWA World Tag Team Titles, we've done it all! Whoooo! Tonight, Lex Luger and the Skyscrapers? We're going to show you why you only have one inferior belt among the three of you. Comparing that United States Title to my gold belt would be like comparing ice cream to horse manure. Whoooo! Skyscrapers? You may be two big men but my buddies here, The Steiner Brothers, are going to show you why they will be the most dominant team going into the next decade! Whoooooo!"

[...Scott opens his mouth to talk but Ric took up all the interview time and we head to an area backstage.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[in this other area backstage, Jim Ross says there is pandemonium going on...]

[...Paul Orndorff and Barry Windham have found each other backstage! Windham hits a few shots to the gut on Orndorff. Windham grabs Orndorff's arm and puts it in a doorway and then slams the door on Orndorff's arm! Orndorff cries out in pain and holds that arm as the fun police come out. Orndorff says he thinks it's broken as Barry Windham walks off satisfied.]

Match #2

Dick Slater vs. Eddie Gilbert

[Our second match of the night had the announcers mostly talking about the incident between Orndorff and Windham, speculating on the condition of Orndorff's arm. Dick Slater got in a few good shots in this one but it was mostly a showcase for 'Hot Stuff' Eddie Gilbert and his talents. Gilbert took Slater down and then wrapped him up in the Figure 4 Leglock as taught to him by Ric Flair! Slater had no choice but to submit!]

Winner: Eddie Gilbert (Via Submission @ 6:20)

Match Rating: C+

[...Missy Hyatt got in the ring and blew kisses as she stood beside Eddie Gilbert. Eddie raised his arm in the air in victory when two people came running down to the ring...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/garyhart.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpg

[...Eddie raised his fist, ready for a fight against Terry Funk. Funk hit the ring and dodged a clothesline by Gilbert. Eddie turned around and fired a shot but Funk pulled Missy Hyatt into the way! Missy Hyatt took a shot from Eddie Gilbert! Eddie looked horrified at what he's done! Funk kicked him in a low blow and then hooked him -- Texas Piledriver! The crowd booed as both Gilbert and Hyatt were laid out and Gary Hart entered the ring, raising the arm of the crazy texan.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[As paramedics came into the ring to check on Missy Hyatt, we were treated to a video package...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting6.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpg

[...This one hyped the main event at Starrcade 1989! Sting heads into Starrcade looking to win not only the NWA World Heavyweight Title but also the rights to the IV Horsemen name! Ric Flair has everything to lose in this title match but he is looking for revenge against the man who turned on him. It's all in a little over a week live and only on pay-per-view! Make sure you call your local cable operator for availability!]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[Following this, let's head to some pre-recorded comments from three of the men in our main event tonight...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/luger.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sid2.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/danspivey2.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/theadorerlong.jpg

[...Lex Luger and The Skyscrapers along with their manager Theodore R. Long...]

Lex Luger

"Sid, Dan, I don't really know either of you and honestly I don't care to get to know either of you. You are just a means to an end as far as the Total Package is concerned. Tonight, you've both been given an opportunity to ride my coattails to glory. Let's just hope you can hold on."

[...Lex flexed a moment and then turned and walked off, leaving some glaring stares at his back. Long looks toward the camera...]

Theodore R. Long

"Look, that's alright, gentlemen. We've got the power right here to destroy all three men in that ring. Tonight, you continue your dominance and show that you can beat those Steiner Brothers. Do it for the Godfather of WCW."

[...Sid and Dan just look menacingly toward the camera, breathing heavy and we head to the ring.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #3

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/greatmuta.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/garyhart.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/jasonknight.jpg

NWA World Television Title Match

The Great Muta defends vs. Jason Knight

[in a match that just about everyone figured to be a squash, Jason Knight showed that he has some talent despite his record. He kept The Great Muta on his heels for most of the match, gaining several near falls as the two wrestlers showed some great chemistry in the ring. The Great Muta made his comeback and nailed Jason Knight in the face with the Green Mist as Gary Hart distracted the referee. Knight fell to the ground, grabbing his eyes and Muta made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: The Great Muta (Via Pinfall @ 2:21)

Match Rating: B+

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[The cameras move backstage, showing...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/RickySteamboat3.jpg

[...Ricky Steamboat with a concerned look on his face. He pauses and asks someone where Paul Orndorff was taken. The staff member says he saw someone entering the room down the hall that looked a little like Orndorff but he's not sure. Steamboat nodded and walked down to that door. He knocked and then tried the knob. The door opened and Steamboat was immediately taken down by a clothesline...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/luger.jpg

[...It's a setup by Luger! Luger grabs Steamboat and tosses him in the room! He locks the door and takes the key with him! Steamboat bangs on the door but Luger just smiles and walks off. Ric Flair and The Steiner Brothers will definitely have no help tonight!]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[Down in the boiler room backstage, the cameras pan around for a moment and then see a figure sitting on the ground with a smile through twisted teeth...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/cactusjack3.jpg

[...It's Cactus Jack! Cactus looks up toward the camera...]

Cactus Jack

"Looking for me? You see Z-Man, this is the type of place that people think that a monster like me belongs. This is the type of place that my parents would send me just to keep me away from them. But I won't be in this type of place at Starrcade. No, I will be inside a ring looking across toward you and your pretty face. I will be reminded of all those jocks and all those bullies who attacked me over and over and over again. I will be reminded and I will make you pay. I will make you suffer for their mistakes just as I suffered. They say that misery loves company. At Starrcade, you're gonna be my best friend. BANG! BANG!"

[...Cactus smiles, poking his tongue through the hole in his teeth and we head back to the ring.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/garyhart.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/JunkYardDog.jpg

Terry Funk vs. Junkyard Dog

[A very good semi main event match that is helped by the great chemistry between these two wrestlers. They seem to know each other well and they are able to anticipate moves to string several together at one time. Funk takes the early control following a rake to the eyes. He clotheslines down JYD and then tosses him out of the ring. He distracts the official as Gary Hart punts a kick to the ribs on JYD! Gary Hart smiles and tosses JYD back in where Funk makes a cover: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout!...]

[...During the bout, Bob Orton, Jr. makes his way down to the ring carrying a bottle of some sort. Jim Ross says it is a bottle of Jack Daniels! At around the six minute mark, JYD fights out of a Sleeperhold and starts to gain an advantage over Funk! The crowd gets into it with a 'JYD' chant! The Junkyard Dog grabs Funk and hits him with multiple headbutts that definitely make Funk woozy! Funk throws some punches and then falls to the mat where JYD makes a cover: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout! JYD gets up and grabs Funk, raising him up on his shoulder! Gary Hart jumps on the apron, getting referee Randy Anderson's attention! Bob Orton jumps on the apron as well! Orton grabs Funk as JYD sets up for The Big Thump. JYD swings around and Orton spits the Jack right into his eyes! JYD drops Funk as he is blinded by the alcohol! Funk with a low blow kick! He hooks JYD as Hart and Orton jump off the apron -- Texas Piledriver! Funk makes the cover, hooking the leg: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Terry Funk (Via Pinfall @ 8:41)

Match Rating: B+

Lex Luger and The Skyscrapers vs. Ric Flair and The Steiner Brothers

[it is main event time and what a six man match we have for you all. Luger and The Skyscrapers each had seperate entrances, while Flair and The Steiner Brothers also had seperate entrances. Missy Hyatt was absent from ringside for this match after taking the shot from Eddie Gilbert earlier in the night. Scott Steiner and Lex Luger kicked things off. Scott showed off his superior athletic ability versus the power and muscular physique of Luger. Scott hit Luger with a high angle belly to belly suplex that sent Luger halfway across the ring where Sid Vicious tagged himself in. Sid stood toe to toe with Scott Steiner. Scott tried to get into a fist-fight with Sid, which was a big mistake. Sid floored Scott with a clothesline and then picked him up off the mat -- press slam back down! Sid made a cover: 1 -- Rick broke it up! Rick and Sid stared each other down for a moment until referee Tommy Young began escorting Rick to his side of the ring. Dan Spivey came in, clapping his hands in the air to make the referee think a tag has been made. Spivey and Sid sent Scott to the ropes -- double clothesline! Scott Steiner definitely not fairing well in the early-goings of this match. Spivey picked up Scott and whipped him into the turnbuckles. Spivey followed him in but Scott moved out of the way! Spivey hit chest-first in the corner and then turned and Scott hooked a waistlock -- belly to belly suplex! What a move! Scott dropped to his knees and crawled toward his corner. He tagged in the NWA World Heavyweight Champion as Lex Luger tagged himself in!...]

[...Flair came in and dropped Luger with a hard chop to the chest! The Nature Boy threw punches for Dan Spivey and Sid Vicious! Flair turned back to Luger and took down the Total Package with a clothesline, releasing a 'Whooo' for the crowd! Flair bounced off the ropes and ran toward the fallen Luger -- Kneedrop -- missed! Luger rolled out of the way of the Kneedrop and Flair grabbed his knee in pain. Luger got to his feet and stomped away at the NWA World Heavyweight Champion! He lifted Flair up and nailed him with a Running Forearm! Luger made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- Broken Up again by Rick Steiner! Luger got up and picked up Flair, tossing him outside the ring. Sid and Dan dropped off the apron and both began choking Ric Flair! The crowd booed and referee Tommy Young turned around after escorting Rick Steiner outside the ring. Sid tossed Flair back in the ring and Luger hooked him -- Vertical Suplex! Luger picks up Flair and sends him to the ropes -- Powerslam! The crowd begins a 'Flair' chant! Flair is picked up again and Luger whips him toward the turnbuckle! Flair flips up and over the corner. He runs along the apron and is caught with a big boot by Sid Vicious! Flair falls to the apron and rolls back in the ring. Luger calls for the Human Torture Rack! Luger picks up Flair -- Flair drops behind him! Flair drops a clip to the knee of Luger and then begins crawling toward his corner. The crowd is ready for Flair to make the tag to one of the Steiner Brothers! Luger is dazed and Sid Vicious tags himself in! He tries to get over before Flair can -- tag to Rick Steiner!...]

[...Rick Steiner hits Sid with a Steinerline! He has one for Dan Spivey and one for Lex Luger! Rick begins 'woof'ing and moving around the ring to the delight of the crowd! Rick drops to all fours and goes after Sid with headbutts! Dan Spivey comes running in and he is cut off by Scott Steiner! Lex Luger is cut off by Ric Flair! It's a pier six brawl! Luger and Flair spill out of the ring! Rick Steiner gets to his feet and waits for Sid to get up. Rick goes for another Steinerline but Sid dodges and grabs Rick around the throat -- Choke Slam! Scott comes over and catches a big boot from Sid Vicious! Sid makes a cover on Rick: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: Lex Luger and The Skyscrapers (Via Pinfall @ 9:07)

Match Rating: B-

[...What an upset victory here tonight! But the question is: will the same thing happen at Starrcade? Will Sid Vicious and Dan Spivey win the NWA World Tag Team Titles? Ric Flair enters the ring and begins to berate Rick and Scott Steiner! He yells at them about losing this match! Scott shakes his head and helps his brother out of the ring. A figure jumps onto the apron in street clothes...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/barrywindham2.jpg

[...It's Barry Windham! Windham enters the ring and clotheslines Flair from behind! The crowd boos this attack as Luger enters the ring as well! Windham helps Luger lift Flair into the Human Torture Rack! Flair cries out in pain! The crowd boos this attack by two members of the..well..of the Three Horsemen? Luger lets Flair down and flexes as the crowd boos even more. Luger and Windham raise three fingers as the show goes off the air.]

NWA POWER HOUR*

Friday Week 4 December 1989

Heels Always Listed First

Kevin Sullivan vs. The Gravedigger

Gravedigger continues his winning ways

Mike Rotundo vs. Jason Knight

Knight had great performance against Muta so maybe he would deserve a win once on a while but it won´t happen here.

Rip Rogers vs. Ricky Steamboat

easy

Doom vs. Rock 'N' Roll Express

eerrr no idea on this one. I don´t even remember who was in these teams other than Simmons being in Doom so I go with him

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Steve Armstrong

Doh

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 4 December 1989

Heels Always Listed First

Dan Spivey vs. Scott Steiner

Sid is the bigger name on their team so Spivey takes the fall here

Cactus Jack and Dick Slater vs. Z-Man and Eddie Gilbert

Sleter looks like a weak link here

Sid Vicious vs. Rick Steiner

Sid takes the win over Rick to make the score even

Sting vs. Paul Orndorff

Tting won´t lose so close on Starcate

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match: Mike Rotundo gets a shot vs. Ric Flair

Flair obviously takes this one

NWA Starrcade

Sunday Week 4 December 1989

Heels Always Listed First

Terry Funk vs. Eddie Gilbert

Funk have had the upper hand so far so logic says that Gilbert wins but I´m just not sold on Gilbert having what it takes to beat Funk who was Flair´s challenger just a little while ago

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Flyin' Brian

I would count this as Muta´s first real title defense (meaning that it´s the first time Muta faces someone who isn´t outsider, jobber or both) so I doubt he is losing

Barry Windham vs. Paul Orndorff

Windham has more going with that four Horseman thing

Cactus Jack vs. Z-Man

Since I gived the tag match to Z-Man, Cactus Jack takes this one though I wouldn´t be surprised if this one continues to next PPV

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match: The Skyscrapers get a shot vs. The Steiner Brothers

Could go either way but I think that Steiners need longer title run

Bob Orton vs. Junkyard Dog

Neither guy haven´t been strong but JYD is the guy who I think have lost more and so I give this one to Orton

NWA United States Title Match: Lex Luger defends vs. Ricky Steamboat

Not sure about this one but since I predicted no title change in other title match guess it shoud happen here with this being big show andd all.

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match: Sting gets a shot vs. Ric Flair

I believe that Sting will win but not get a title so he gets right to use that Four Horseman name but title stays on Flair

NWA POWER HOUR*

Kevin Sullivan vs. The Gravedigger

Purple Haze run-in to assist Sullivan?!! Nah! Gravedigger continues his streak

Mike Rotundo vs. Jason Knight

Good performance against Muta might've raised his stock a little, but Knight's still doing the job with Mike set for a match with Flair

Rip Rogers vs. Ricky Steamboat

Anything less would be a 'rip-off'. Ho. Ho, and indeed, ho.

Doom vs. Rock 'N' Roll Express

Pig in a poke really but my logic is that with the abolition of the Freebirds, there are only two heel teams in the NWA and the Wild Samoans have feuded with both the Warriors and Steiners so a new team have to be added to the mix - Doom are perfect for the role until the big decision is taken to turn one of the mega face teams...

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Steve Armstrong

Solid building of Muta by having him on TV every week

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Dan Spivey vs. Scott Steiner

Tough one but it's the stronger Steiner against the weaker Skyscraper.

Cactus Jack and Dick Slater vs. Z-Man and Eddie Gilbert

The presence of Dick Slater tips the scales in favour of Z-Man and Gilbert

Sid Vicious vs. Rick Steiner

Even the showdown at 1-1.

Sting vs. Paul Orndorff

Sting/Flair is the match of the year both need to look strong going in...

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match: Mike Rotundo gets a shot vs. Ric Flair

Mike Rotundo vs Sting for the NWA World Heavyweight Title and the rights to the Varsity Club doesn't have the same ring to it... Call me crazy!

NWA Starrcade

Terry Funk vs. Eddie Gilbert

Gilbert's had a great rub from this build but Terry needs to go over if the feud's to continue and I can't see any Funk/Gilbert feud being settled in a normal match!

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Flyin' Brian

Muta's built up a lot of wins with the title over the past few weeks and this will help legitimise the belt - Pillman's a great long term prospect but it's too soon to rush the belt on to him.

Barry Windham vs. Paul Orndorff

A great match-up but the easiest pick of the night for me - Windham and the 'New' Horsemen need to take the initiative.

Cactus Jack vs. Z-Man

Z-Man's been on the back foot for the duration of this feud, a good win here won't hurt Cactus, especially if he comes off the stronger in the feud. With the build involved (based on Zenk's good looks) I can't see this feud finishing in a regular match - there has to be a risk to Tom's pretty face!

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match: The Skyscrapers get a shot vs. The Steiner Brothers

The Steiners do what the Road Warriors couldn't and beat The Skyscrapers - leading to a heel turn from everyone's favourite Chicago streetfighters.

Bob Orton vs. Junkyard Dog

Job-off! JYD to take the win and keep the crowd happy. They'll need it...

NWA United States Title Match: Lex Luger defends vs. Ricky Steamboat

Lex is stuck as #2 heel at the moment with nowhere to go - but if there's going to be dissent in the ranks between the new Horsemen, I think Luger is likely to be the source, he needs the win to give him legitimate reason for being upset at not getting his chance. Ricky meanwhile is in a pseudo-Jake Roberts role as the man who gets them ready for the Champ.

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match: Sting gets a shot vs. Ric Flair

The face in pursuit storyline is always sweeter than the heel! I smell interference from The Fourth Horseman! I'm going for Sid to take that role by the way (assuming you've not managed to pinch Arn, Tully or Dusty from Vince - Dusty Rhodes in the Horsemen against Flair... that'd be a storyline!

You've the makings for a great PPV there - It's been built in such a way that you could build convincing arguments for either side to win pretty much all of the matches. I'm interested to see where you go from here - particularly with the Tag division - just an opinion but while it's very strong at the top there doesn't seem to be much coming through underneath at the moment, not a criticism you understand, I'm sure you've got it covered, more a point of interest as I'm having similar issues with my own diary at the moment!

<em>You're not Vince Russo. As much as I like Rotundo, Flair is keeping his title.</em></p><p> </p><p>

NWA Starrcade</p><p>

Sunday Week 4 December 1989</p><p>

<em>Starrcade time already? Wow. Way to go man.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Terry Funk vs. <strong>Eddie Gilbert</strong></p><p>

<em>Going with a shocker right out of the gates. Should be a great brawl, but like I said earlier with Doom/RNR, Gilbert can be a solid contender in the 90s while Funk is the 80s. Though in real life we know that he's probably still wrestling while in his 80s.</em></p><p>

<strong>Barry Windham</strong> vs. Paul Orndorff</p><p>

<em>Windham getting the evil Horsemen some momentum.</em></p><p>

<strong>Cactus Jack</strong> vs. Z-Man</p><p>

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match: The Skyscrapers get a shot vs. <strong>The Steiner Brothers</strong></p><p>

<em>Leading into the Steiners being the team of the 90s. I fully expect this cliche to come up for a lot of teams and workers.</em></p><p>

<em>'Digger continues his strong build to a WCW debut.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Mike Rotundo</strong> vs. Jason Knight</p><p>

<em>Holy crap. Jason Knight was in a B+ match. Anyway, Rotundo is getting a World Title match on WCW, and isn't a full-time jobber, so....</em></p><p> </p><p>

Rip Rogers vs. <strong>Ricky Steamboat</strong></p><p>

<em>A treat for the Power Hour, having the Steamer make an appearance.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Doom vs. <strong>Rock 'N' Roll Express</strong></p><p>

<em>Two teams that have been spending their time jobbing. R'n'R get more value out of the win, as Doom have the menace to get some heat back through your non-recorded angle time, on this show.</em></p><p> </p><p>

NWA World Television Title Match: <strong>The Great Muta</strong> defends vs. Steve Armstrong</p><p>

<em>Muta continues to build mountains out of mole hills, on Power Hour. Great to see an Armstrong on here.</em></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Dan Spivey vs. <strong>Scott Steiner</strong></p><p>

<em>With all four men squaring off, it's 90% that they'll split the results. Scott and Sid are the business ends of their tag teams, so I'll go with them.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Cactus Jack and Dick Slater vs. <strong>Z-Man and Eddie Gilbert</strong></p><p>

<em>Three guys in programs here, the scales are tipped against Cactus Jack by the inclusion of Dick Slater.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Sid Vicious</strong> vs. Rick Steiner</p><p>

<em>Because Sid is the master, and the ruler of the world.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Sting</strong> vs. Paul Orndorff</p><p>

<em>Sting keeps the momentum rolling, into Starrcade.</em></p><p> </p><p>

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match: Mike Rotundo gets a shot vs. <strong>Ric Flair</strong> </p><p>

<em>Although this result was never in doubt, I'm a little upset that you telegraphed the ending by not including Mike Rotundo vs. Sting as a possible title match at Starrcade. Tsk tsk. Seriously, though, this should be a great main event, and the perfect way to end the go-home show.</em></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Terry Funk</strong> vs. Eddie Gilbert</p><p>

<em>Although Funk is transitioning into an elevation role, further down the card, the incident involving Gilbert knocking out Missy Hyatt gives great heel leverage to sneak a victory. Gilbert will be doing a big babyface beatdown, but let his emotions get carried away, and cost him the decision. These two will square off again in the new year.</em></p><p> </p><p>

NWA World Television Title Match: <strong>The Great Muta</strong> defends vs. Flyin' Brian</p><p>

<em>Brian has been Flyin' under the radar of late. That doesn't bode well for a title change.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Barry Windham</strong> vs. Paul Orndorff</p><p>

<em>Windham starts the evening out right for the Horsemen. No serious drama here. We'll save that for later.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Cactus Jack vs. <strong>Z-Man</strong></p><p>

<em>I think it's standard procedure to have Cactus Jack take a DQ loss, in the opening bout of feuds. No need to change a good thing.</em></p><p> </p><p>

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match: The Skyscrapers get a shot vs. <strong>The Steiner Brothers</strong></p><p>

<em>You're hard pressed to find a bigger proponent for Sid than I, but the Steiners and the Road Warriors have a date with destiny, down the line. Until then, don't expect these belts to go anywhere.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Bob Orton vs. <strong>Junkyard Dog</strong></p><p>

<em>In the great Battle of the JTTSs, JYD comes out ahead, in my books. He's got the charisma to stay relevant, long after his in-ring skills have evaporated. Orton sadly falls short of that, although I would expect him to have decent job security, as a gate keeper.</em></p><p> </p><p>

NWA United States Title Match: Lex Luger defends vs. <strong>Ricky Steamboat</strong></p><p>

<em>This sets up the main event, as the Horsemen have had one success, and one failure. There's no question that Steamboat can do absolute wonders up and down the card, with the US title. He'll do for the babyface side what Muta does with the TV title. Most importantly, heading into the main event, the Horsemen look strong, but not invincible, meaning anything can happen...</em></p><p> </p><p>

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match: <strong>Sting</strong> gets a shot vs. Ric Flair </p><p>

<em>... and it does. There are so many possibilities for the fourth member of the group, whether a new signing, a big turn, or an established heel getting a big rub. Regardless, this heel unit just has too much going for it, not to win the title. It won't be even close to clean, but as has been said, Ric Flair on the chase is just too good to pass up.</em></p>

If it wasn't for the fact that it's Starrcade I'd actually predict Flair as the fourth man all along, but that'd mean Sting lying down for him and that'd be a really shitty way to end the biggest PPV of the year. Having said that I'm pre-programmed into thinking that Flair has to be in The Horsemen. If it wasn't for their contract with the WWF I'd love for it to be Tully or Arn - especially the latter.

<p>Too bad about Hayes, as he could have been a solid contender or JTTS thanks to his overness and entertainment skills. Though I'll be honest, I didn't even really notice he was gone until you mentioned it. Same thing as Jimmy Jam.</p><p> </p><p>

<p>With three shows of predictions plus comments I'd end up with a post nearly as long as the show! WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 4 December 1989

Location: Dragon Stadium South Lake Texas (Mid South)

Attendance: 10,000

Overall Rating: B+

TV Rating: 2.51

There was a feeling that a number of the angles used did not reach the standards set by the in-ring action.

This show can be considered a success, it should have increased our popularity.

The Power Hour

In an extremely short match, The Gravedigger defeated Kevin Sullivan in 4:13 by pinfall with a Tombstone...B-

In an extremely short match, Mike Rotundo defeated Jason Knight in 1:33 by pinfall with an Airplane Spin...C

In an extremely short match, Ricky Steamboat defeated Rip Rogers in 4:24 by pinfall with a Flying Body Press...C+

In an extremely short match, Rock 'N' Roll Express defeated Doom in 3:45 when Robert Gibson defeated Ron Simmons by pinfall with a Double Dropkick...B

In a match that had some good action but not much in the way of heat, The Great Muta defeated Steve Armstrong in 6:26 by pinfall with a Moonsault Press. The Great Muta makes defence number 5 of his NWA Television title...C

Dan Spivey vs. Scott Steiner

[The show begins with the entrances of 'Dangerous' Dan Spivey and one half of the NWA World Tag Team Champions in Scott Steiner. Missy Hyatt came out this time sporting some bruises from being hit last week. This was an open bout between these two with both men showing what they've got. Spivey went for a Choke Slam late in the match but Steiner was able to get out of it and nail Spivey with a belly-to-belly suplex! Scott twirled his finger around to signal for the finish and whipped Spivey to the ropes -- Frankensteiner! What a move on the big man! Scott makes a cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3! The Steiner Brothers pick up a victory here.]

Winner: Scott Steiner (Via Pinfall @ 5:56)

Match Rating: B-

[...This time it's Ricky Steamboat in front of an NWA background...]

Ricky Steamboat

"Lex Luger, last week you locked me inside a room like an animal. But you see like an animal I am more than prepared to attack you. We are just one day away from my shot at your NWA United States Heavyweight Title belt. Lex, you better be prepared and not worried about your fourth horseman because the Dragon is walking away with your title."

[...Ricky just nods to the camera and we head elsewhere.]

[...The Great Muta and Flyin' Brian are fighting in the back! The crowd gets into it a little bit though not too much. Muta goes for that mist but Brian blocks it with his arm up. Brian hits a dropkick backstage there on the floor! Brian looks down at Muta as the fun police come to break things up.]

Cactus Jack and Dick Slater vs. Z-Man and Eddie Gilbert

[A halfway decent tag team bout though it was extremely short. Cactus Jack went after Z-Man early on and bit him on the forehead! Cactus raked at his flesh until Z-Man was able to tag out to Gilbert. Cactus tagged out to Dick Slater and pretty soon it was a four man brawl. Cactus hit a Cactus Clothesline to Z-Man, sending them both over the top rope to the floor. This left Eddie and Dick Slater inside the ring where Eddie clamped on the Figure Four Leglock. Outside the ring, Z-Man drew back to throw a punch and caught Missy Hyatt in the face with his elbow. Missy went to the ground as Dick Slater gave in to the Figure Four.]

Winners: Z-Man and Eddie Gilbert (Via Submission @ 3:37)

Match Rating: C+

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting6.jpg

[...This one has Sting swinging his arms back and forth and jumping on his toes...]

Sting

"Ric Flair, we are less than twenty four hours away from the biggest pay-per-view in the history of time: STARRCADE 1989! I am going to get a PRIZE and that prize is the NWA World Heavyweight Title. Not only that but I am going to get the use of the Four Horsemen name and I will be bringing the fourth Horseman with me. Starrcade is going to be one major pay-per-view. Ric Flair, there won't be any stylin' and profilin'. There won't be any excuses. There will be just you and me inside that ring. OOOWWW! It's gonna be showtime!"

[...Sting looks pumped and we head back to the ring.]

Sid Vicious vs. Rick Steiner

[The second of our two matches pitting the Steiner Brothers against the Skyscrapers was not as well received as the first match. It was an open showdown where both Sid and Rick Steiner showed that they can hang with each other. Rick took Sid down with a stiff Steinerline and made a cover: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout! Sid got back up and took Rick Steiner down with a clothesline of his own. He picked up Rick and hooked him -- Power Bomb! He picked up Rick Steiner again -- Choke Slam! He made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Sid Vicious (Via Pinfall @ 6:24)

Match Rating: C+

[...Following the match, Sid Vicious lifted Rick Steiner and threw him into the corner. He began throwing stiff shots and that is when two men came running down the aisle...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/danspivey2.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ScottSteiner22.jpg

[...Dan Spivey and Scott Steiner battled all the way to the ring and then inside. Scott fought valiantly against both Skyscrapers but with his brother down the numbers game was too much. The Skyscrapers hit Scott Steiner with a Double Power Bomb! Sid turned to Dan and shoved him, yelling at him about losing the match earlier. Dan Spivey yelled back at him and Theodore R. Long stepped in and seperated the two, escorting them to the back since their damage was done.]

[Time for another pre-recorded interview...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpg

[...This time it's the NWA World Heavyweight Champion 'The Nature Boy' Ric Flair!...]

Ric Flair

"Starrcade. The top pay-per-view in the NWA. 1983, Ric Flair wins the NWA World Title from the great Harley Race. 1984, Ric Flair defeats Dusty Rhodes to retain the NWA World Title and win 1 million dollars. 1985, Ric Flair pinned Dusty Rhodes again but the match was turned by another referee who gave Dusty Rhodes the win by disqualification. 1986, Ric Flair and Nikita Koloff wrestle to a double disqualification. 1987, Ric Flair defeats Rugged Ronnie Garvin to win back the NWA World Title. 1988, Ric Flair defeats Lex Luger to retain the NWA World Title. Are you sensing a pattern here, Sting? Are you clueing in to exactly what Starrcade means to Ric Flair? Whoooo. Starrcade is Ric Flair and Ric Flair is Starrcade. I have never been beaten for this title at Starrcade and it's not gonna start tomorrow night. This NWA World Title means everything to me. That means that if I have to rake your eyes, I'm gonna do it! If I have to rake my nails down your back, I'm gonna do it! If I have to Whooooo give you a low blow, I'm gonna do it! Nothing is going to stop me from walking away as the NWA World Champion. You can bet on it, you can bank on it. Tomorrow night there is gonna be a celebration after Starrcade. Whooooo!"

[...Ric looked intense looking at the camera and we head back to the ring.]

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting6.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/PaulOrndorff4.jpg

Sting vs. Paul Orndorff

[it's time for our semi main event and what a matchup it should be. Due to the vicious attack last week by Barry Windham, Paul Orndorff is wrestling with a cast on his arm in this match. The NWA wanted to grant him the week off but he wouldn't hear of it. Sting started out quickly, staying to the side of the cast so that Orndorff can't grab ahold of him. Sting took Orndorff to the mat with a sharp clothesline and then kicked the cast! He stomped on it a couple of times and the crowd booed the vicious nature of Sting. Sting pulled Orndorff to his feet and sent him into the turnbuckle. Sting followed him in -- Stinger Splash -- Missed! Orndorff got out of the way and he clotheslines Sting over the top rope to the floor with his one good arm! Orndorff looks down at Sting as the man from Venice Beach California pulls himself to his feet...]

[...Orndorff and Sting traded blows for about six minutes before Sting started to take control. The number one contender hit Orndorff with a discus punch and then another stomp on that cast! Sting pulled Orndorff up and whipped him into a corner where Orndorff hit with spaghetti legs! Sting backed up and then charged -- Stinger Splash! The move connected and Orndorff falls to the mat. Sting grabs the legs -- Scorpion Deathlock! The crowd boos as Orndorff tries to fight it! Orndorff reaches out for the ropes but he is only close enough with his casted hand and he can't grab the ropes! Sting drags Orndorff to the center of the ring and Orndorff has no choice but to submit!]

Winner: Sting (Via Submission @ 8:56)

Match Rating: B+

Match #5

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/mikerotundo.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpg

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match

Mike Rotundo gets a shot vs. Ric Flair

[As this main event gets started, the crowd sits back and watches, expecting a technical classic between these two. The beginning of the match does not disappoint as both men go toe to toe and wrestle to two stalemates. Rotundo takes the first advantage in the match with a sharp side headlock takeover, getting a two count immediately but Flair is not going to be beaten that easily. Flair slowly fights his way to his feet and sends Rotundo to the ropes. Flair wraps a Sleeperhold on Rotundo early on! Rotundo struggles within it and manages to push to the ropes to get the hold broken. Flair releases and pushes Rotundo in the corner. A hard knife-edge chops echoes throughout the arena! Flair with another and another! The crowd releases a 'Whooooo' with each one. Flair grabs Rotundo and irish whips him to the other side. Flair follows him in but meets nothing but the corner! Rotundo rolls him up: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout!...]

[...Rotundo has kept the advantage and around the seven minute mark he locks Flair in an abdominal stretch! Flair cries out in pain but shakes his head when asked if he wants to give it up. Rotundo reaches over and uses the ropes for leverage! The crowd tries to get Tommy Young to look but by the time the official looks, Rotundo has released the ropes. He shakes his head when Young questions him and then Rotundo says to ask Flair. As Tommy Young turns his back, Rotundo grabs the ropes again and Flair cries out in pain! Tommy Young finally sees the ropes and makes Rotundo break the hold. Rotundo sends Flair down to the mat and he says it's over! He picks up Flair and Flair rakes his eyes! The Nature Boy gathers his strength as he gets up and he begins chopping the chest of Rotundo again! Flair takes down Rotundo with a big hip toss and he makes the cover: 1 -- Kickout...]

[...Flair continues with the control, grabbing Rotundo and dropping him in a shinbreaker! Flair releases a 'Whooooo' and the crowd gets on their feet! Flair begins to strut across the ring and then he bounces off the ropes -- Kneedrop! Rotundo grabs his forehead in pain as Flair moves around him and grabs the legs -- Figure 4 Leglock! Flair gives Rotundo a little taste of his own medicine by using the ropes for leverage! The Dirtiest Player In The Game releases before Tommy Young sees him holding on to the ropes! Rotundo fights and struggles to get the Figure Four turned over. He raises up on his hands, pushing upward but he can't quite get the strength to turn things around. Rotundo looks to the official -- and gives up! Rotundo gave up!]

Winner: Ric Flair (Via Submission @ 9:59)

Match Rating: A

[...Ric slowly breaks the holds and he is handed his NWA World Title as he finished off defense number five. Ric gets his hand raised as a figure walks out from the back...]

This prediction contest will last until the end of the in-game year and then will return to the regular 3 month rotation.

Thanks again to everyone who's predicted so far! The predictions and comments really do help make this diary fun and worthwhile!

And a special thank you to all of the real world picture cutters and designers. They really do help each and every diary look that much more authentic!
