NWA POWER HOUR

Thursday Week 3 October 1989

Butch Reed vs. Rick Steiner

Buzz Sawyer vs. Ricky Steamboat

Terry Funk vs. Ricky Morton

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 3 October 1989

The Skyscrapers vs. The Dynamic Dudes

The Skyscrapers have the potential to go far...the Dynamic Dudes not so much. You know I didn't know Johnny Ace was related to Animal until about a second ago!

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Jason Knight

Bam Bam Bigelow rules. End of.

Kevin Sullivan and Nitron vs. The Rock 'N' Roll Express

Nitron is a full-on jobber for the moment.

Cactus Jack vs. Junkyard Dog

BANG, BANG! Jack's in a programme with Williams whereas, for the moment at least, JYD is floating.

Terry Funk, The Great Muta and Lex Luger vs. Ric Flair, Sting and Ricky Steamboat

Woooo! Owww! Erm, something Dragon-esque. Can't pick against these three, especially when it is against Funk.

[...We are going to see a main event featuringa six man tag team war as Terry Funk, The Great Muta and NWA United States Heavyweight Champion Lex Luger team up against NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair, NWA World Television Champion Sting and Ricky Steamboat!]

[The show opens with a pre-recorded interview...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/garyhart.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/greatmuta.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/luger.jpg

[...The 3 members of the J-Tex Corporation and the NWA United States Heavyweight Champion Lex Luger are standing within the interview set...]

Gary Hart

"Take a look at my ever-growing army ladies and gentlemen. Take a good look at the J-Tex Corporation here. Terry Funk, who is soon to be the NWA World Heavyweight Champion! The Great Muta, who is soon to be the NWA World Television Champion and we're teaming up tonight with the man who is the NWA United States Champion 'The Total Package' Lex Luger. I have made you each my promise that Sting and Ric Flair are going to be eliminated from the National Wrestling Alliance! Could tonight be that night? Will tonight be the last night you see Ric Flair or Sting on national television? Make sure you don't leave your television sets, ladies and gentlemen, because the J-Tex Corporation is going to fulfill all my promises beginning tonight."

[...The crowd was unhappy with that and rained down boos but it's time to head to the ring for our opening bout.]

The Skyscrapers vs. The Dynamic Dudes

[The Dynamic Dudes team started out very strong in double-teaming Sid and then Dan Spivey! They even took Spivey to the mat with a double dropkick! Spivey was covered: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout! Once the kickout was made and a tag was made to Sid Vicious, Sid was dominant against both Dynamic Dudes. Sid caught Johnny Ace around the throat and lifted him high in the air, dropping him with a Choke Slam! Sid put his foot on Ace's chest: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: The Skyscrapers (Via Pinfall @ 2:36)

Match Rating: B-

[...Teddy Long came in to celebrate with The Skyscrapers when 'Iron Man' began to play. The crowd got on their feet...]

[...As Paul Ellering led out Animal and Hawk: The Road Warriors! Ellering stopped his team at the top of the ramp and it looks like he has something to say...]

Paul Ellering

"Sid Vicious, Dan Spivey, Teddy Long take a look and feast your eyes on the two baddest men on the planet. These two men are not like your average joe on the block. Animal's got the power, Hawk's got the speed and agility and I've got the brains. We're headed on our way to facing the NWA World Tag Team Champions: The Steiners. But you guys are a speed bump along the road. We just want to find out if your wish bone is where your back bone ought to be! My Road Warriors are facing you guys at NWA's Halloween Havoc. How about we make this match a Chicago Street Fight? No rules, no countout, no DQ, pinfalls and submissions count only anywhere in the building. We'll see if you're as tough as everyone says you are."

[...Paul calls off the Road Warriors. No fight here but The Skyscrapers are saying to bring it on! What a match that should be!...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/jimmygarvin.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/MichaelHayes7.jpg

[...This time it's The Fabulous Freebirds!...]

Jimmy Garvin

"Michael, we've got the shot to win back our NWA World Tag Team Titles in a couple of weeks at Halloween Havoc."

Michael Hayes

"That's right, Jimmy! At Halloween Havoc, we are coming to embarass those Steiner boys. We are coming to show to each and every person that their win was a major fluke! We stepped on a banana peel and they beat us for the titles but they aren't going to hold them for long. We're gonna heal the sick, raise the dead and make the buzzards go out of their head!"

[...While the fans try to figure that one out, let's head to another interview...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[This one is within a backstage area...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/cactusjack3.jpg

[...Cactus Jack is sitting and leaning back against a wall...]

Cactus Jack

"Dr. Death Steve Williams, what you don't seem to understand is that I am the proven king of hardcore. I am the man that has been through so much in my life. Why do you think I look like this? Do you think that I woke up one day and yanked out my teeth? Well, yeah, I actually did do that. Do you think that one day I woke up and yanked out some of my hair? Well, actually, I did that yesterday. Why? Because I'm hardcore, that's why! I'm tough enough to do that, Steve Williams. Are you tough enough to do something like that? BANG!! BANG!!"

[...As Cactus smiled for the camera, he was hit by an unseen force...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/SteveWilliams2.jpg

[...Steve Williams has shown up! Dr. Death is exchanging punches with Cactus Jack! Williams runs Jack back into the interview set, knocking over the fake wall! Officials come running in to break things up between these two and we head to our second match of the evening.]

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Jason Knight

[An absolutely destruction clinic by Bam Bam Bigelow. To no one's real surprise, Bigelow dominated from the opening sound of the bell. Jason Knight did not even get in any offensive moves! Bigelow finally finished off Knight with a Greetings From Asbury Park and a pinfall: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Bam Bam Bigelow (Via Pinfall @ 1:38)

Match Rating: C

[...Bam Bam Bigelow got up and raised his arms to boos from the crowd and he was attacked from behind...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/JunkYardDog.jpg

[...The crowd cheered on the JYD! The Junkyard Dog threw punches to Bam Bam, knocking him against the ropes and clotheslining him over the top rope to the floor! JYD followed him out and threw Bigelow against the security railing! He backed up and came running toward Bigelow and Bam Bam moved out of the way! JYD hit chest-first into the security railing and Bigelow clotheslined him down! The fun police came running in to break things up.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[As things were taken care of around the ringside area, it was time to head to another prerecorded interview...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/mikerotundo.jpg

[...This time it's Mike Rotundo...]

Mike Rotundo

"Sting, I came within eyelashes last week of pinning you to the mat and capturing title gold here in the NWA. A title belt that is worthy of my breeding from the prestigious Syracuse University, a university which holds the best wrestlers from start to finish. But you had to leave that wrestling behind. You had to go to your punches and chops and illegal moves to get that Scorpion Deathlock on me. It's sad, really. But, then, people here in Alabama know what it's like to come up short on things. College football, college basketball, you name the sport, really. But soon enough I will get another shot Sting. And this time people will look at Mike Rotundo, NWA World Television Champion, and say Welcome to Orange Country!"

[...Rotundo smiles and we head to another pre-recorded interview...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[This one features two men from a different school...]

[...Missy Hyatt is standing right between the Steiners, who are wearing the NWA World Tag Team Titles...]

Scott Steiner

"Fabulous Freebirds, we have finally given the NWA fans a team that they can cheer for. We have given them NWA World Tag Team Champions that they can have pride in. That's not going to change after Halloween Havoc."

Rick Steiner

"That's right, brother. Woof! Woof! Freebirds, you want another shot at us? You got it at Halloween Havoc but don't be surprised if we take another bite out of you."

[...Missy just smiled and stood there as we headed back to the ring for another bout...]

Kevin Sullivan and Nitron vs. The Rock 'N' Roll Express

[Tag team action here on World Championship Wrestling as Sullivan and Nitron team up with Woman in their corner against the Rock 'N' Roll Express. Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson looked good in there in particular, despite the overwhelming power advantage of both Sullivan and Nitron. Sullivan got in a few more shots than Nitron. Nitron caught Gibson in mid-air on a cross body attempt but a dropkick by Ricky Morton put Gibson on top! Gibson and Morton were both on top of Nitron as referee Nick Patrick made the count: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: The Rock 'N' Roll Express (Via Pinfall @ 4:08)

Match Rating: C+

[...It's three of our contestants in the main event tonight! The crowd cheers in the background at seeing all three of these men together...]

Ric Flair

"I heard that there's a party going on in Alabama tonight! Whoooo! Tonight, you are looking at three of the most elite wrestlers to ever grace the National Wrestling Alliance! You've got two men with gold around their waists and one man who is going to have gold at the end of the month! Whooooo! Terry Funk, Great Muta, Lex Luger, tonight my team is gonna style and Whoooo profile! The three of you are gonna bleed all night long! Whooooo!

Sting

"That's right, Ric. Let's get PUMPED! Tonight, all in the same ring, you've got the Nature Boy, the Stinger and the Dragon! How can you beat a team like this? Oh, that's right, you can't! Funk, Muta, Luger: it's SHOWTIME! OWWWWW!"

[...Ricky gives Sting a pat on the back and we head to the ring for our semi main event...]

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/cactusjack3.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/JunkYardDog.jpg

Cactus Jack vs. Junkyard Dog

[An excellent match that was hard-hitting from start to finish and served to get the crowd excited for our main event. Junkyard Dog started out strong, getting the crowd going wild with his multiple headbutts on Cactus Jack! He lifted up Cactus and dropped him in a Shoulderbreaker! He made a quick cover: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout! JYD played to the crowd for a moment and that allowed Cactus Jack to make a quick exit to outside the ring! JYD followed him out and Cactus ran him against the security railing! The crowd booed heavily and Cactus gave him a 'Bang, Bang!' Cactus tossed JYD back into the ring and gave him a Pulling Piledriver! Cactus made a cover: 1 -- 2 -- Foot on the Ropes!...]

[...Cactus got back up and threw some forearm shots, knocking JYD back into the ropes. Cactus charged him -- Cactus Clothesline! Both men tumble back outside the ring! It takes a moment for either of them to begin to come around. Cactus is the first, though. He grabs JYD and picks him up -- body slam on the floor! The crowd boos as Cactus breaks the count and then climbs on the apron -- Cactus Elbow -- MISSED! JYD moved out of the way and Cactus definitely hurt himself on the fall! JYD picks up Cactus and tosses him back in the ring, joining him inside. He waits for Cactus to start to get up and goes down on all four's headbutting Cactus multiple times! JYD gets to his feet and grabs Cactus Jack, lifting him on his shoulder! He moves back into a corner and his leg is grabbed from outside the ring! It's Bam Bam Bigelow! JYD falls to the mat and gets crotched against the ring post! The referee has no choice but to call for the DQ!]

Winner: Junkyard Dog (Via Disqualification @ 7:51)

Terry Funk, The Great Muta and Lex Luger vs. Ric Flair, Sting and Ricky Steamboat

[With the ring cleared, it was time for the introductions to our main event and what a main event matchup this should be! Terry Funk, The Great Muta and Lex Luger led out to the ring by Gary Hart against Ric Flair, Sting and Ricky Steamboat. All six of them top wrestlers in our industry and three singles titles held by members of both teams. Lex Luger started out for his team along with Sting for his team! Luger did a little bit of showboating at the beginning by flexing his muscles and receiving boos from the crowd for his effort. Sting countered by flexing his own muscles and the crowd cheered for him! Luger got upset at the crowd's reaction and went right for Sting, kicking him in the gut and throwing some forearm smashes to the chest! Luger sent Sting into the ropes -- reversed! Luger came back -- leap frog by Sting! Luger was sent over with a hip toss and then a standing dropkick by the Stinger! Luger backed up in his corner and made a quick tag to the Great Muta...]

[...The Great Muta started things off by spitting that Asian Mist into the air. Sting released an 'OOWWW!' to get the crowd pumped! Sting took an early advantage on Muta, raising him up in a military press! Sting pressed Muta several times and then dropped him on his back! Sting tagged out to Ricky Steamboat. Steamboat came in and took Muta over with a tight arm drag and then began working over the arm of the Great Muta. Steamboat caught Muta with a kick to the ribs following an armbar and he held onto the armbar long enough to tag in Flair! 'Whooooo's' went into the air as Flair came in the ring and he took over the armbar. Flair was countered by some karate kicks by The Great Muta. Muta brought Flair over into his corner and tagged out to Terry Funk...]

[...Funk used his wild brawling style on Flair for the next several minutes, bringing Flair down to the mat! Funk hooked on the Funk Spinning Toehold! The crowd booed and chanted 'Flair, Flair, Flair' as the Nature Boy looked for a way out. That was given when Sting entered the ring and sent Funk down with a clothesline! But the interference distracted the referee, leaving the J-Tex Corporation time to double-team Flair! The Great Muta came back in and took Flair down to the mat. Muta went up top -- Moonsault! Muta went into the pin: 1 -- 2 -- Shoulder Up! Somehow Ric Flair got that right shoulder off the mat!...]

[...The crowd really got behind Flair as Muta picked him up. Flair rolled Muta into a small package: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout! Muta got up and moved quickly to Flair but Flair started throwing punches! Flair got to his feet and the punches turned into chops with the crowd going wild for each one! Flair took down Muta with a hard chop to the chest! Flair looked over to his corner and fell onto the mat, trying to get to his corner! Flair reached out, his arm stretched -- Muta tagged in Lex Luger -- Flair -- tagged in Ricky Steamboat! The Dragon started throwing chops and punches, bringing down all three opponents! The crowd got solidly behind the Dragon! Sting came into the ring and attacked Muta! Sting and Muta fell to the outside of the ring! Terry Funk entered and hit Steamboat from behind! Luger grabbed Steamboat and raised him up -- Human Torture Rack! Luger got Steamboat in the rack but Flair is there! Flair pulled Steamboat down and threw some chops to the granite-like chest of Lex Luger! Luger no-sold them! Terry Funk came in and attacked Flair! Funk sent Flair into the corner and Flair flipped up and over the corner! Flair ran across the apron -- clothesline by Luger! Terry Funk exited the ring, going after Flair on the outside! Inside the ring, no one saw Ricky Steamboat climbing the turnbuckles! Luger turned his attention to Steamboat -- Flying Body Press! Steamboat secured it into a pin, hooking the leg: 1 -- 2 -- 3! Ricky Steamboat has just pinned the United States Champion! What a way to end the show! We'll see you all next week!]

Winners: Ric Flair, Sting and Ricky Steamboat (Via Pinfall @ 17:25)

Match Rating: A

Dick Slater vs. Steve Williams

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 4 October 1989

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Ricky Steamboat

Tough choice to start the show - Bam Bam's been looking good but Ricky's got to be strong going into Halloween Havoc if he's got a chance of taking Luger out.

Buzz Sawyer vs. Scott Steiner

Double duty for Scotty this week and two wins.

Norman The Lunatic vs. Johnny Ace

Haven't seen Norman for a few weeks but I can't see Johnny Ace pulling this one off either.

The Dragonmaster vs. Flyin Brian

Another couple of guys who've been quiet for a few weeks but Pillman's got star quality written all over him.

NWA United States Title Match: Lex Luger defends vs. Junkyard Dog

A JYD win would be interesting - shifting the US title match to Bam Bam/JYD but Luger/Steamboat's a bigger draw.

Non Title: The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair

Double DQ following Funk & Sting interference.

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match:The Fabulous Freebirds get a shot against The Steiner Brothers©

Chicago Street Fight: The Skyscrapers vs. The Road Warriors

I never did like Sid...

Cactus Jack vs. Steve Williams

Tough call I guess I will go with Mick.

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta gets a shot against Sting©

I am not sure how you are going to get this title off of Sting because he is way to big of a star to be holding it.

(NWA United States Title Match?) Bam Bam Bigelow gets a shot against Junkyard Dog

(NWA United States Title Match?) Lex Luger defends vs. Ricky Steamboat

I would hope that Ricky wins here but it could very well go to Lex.

NWA World Title Match, Steel Cage Match: Terry Funk gets a shot against Ric Flair©

Terry is good but Flair is Flair.

Sunday Week 4 October 1989

Heels Always Listed First

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match:The Fabulous Freebirds get a shot against The Steiner Brothers©

Too early into the reign for The Steiners to trade back to the Freebirds

Chicago Street Fight: The Skyscrapers vs. The Road Warriors

Tight one but there's more to this feud to run. Skyscrapers by a nose.

Cactus Jack vs. Steve Williams

Going for Dr. Death but I imagine a bloodbath could be on the cards!

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta gets a shot against Sting©

Sting's too high up the card for the TV title now. Presumably Muta's stock will have risen enough that it won't damage the Stinger to take the fall here.

(NWA United States Title Match?) Bam Bam Bigelow gets a shot against Junkyard Dog

Bam Bam all the way.

(NWA United States Title Match?) Lex Luger defends vs. Ricky Steamboat

Ricky's always been more effective as the chaser rather than the champ IMO.

NWA World Title Match, Steel Cage Match: Terry Funk gets a shot against Ric Flair©

Flair to retain and put this feud to bed.

NWA POWER HOUR*

I love B-shows. They always make me feel like a predicting genius.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 4 October 1989

Heels Always Listed First

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Ricky Steamboat

No matter how much we all love Bam Bam, Steamer is rolling into a US Title shot. That's enough to tip the scales.

Buzz Sawyer vs. Scott Steiner

Buzzsaw is J-Tex' fall guy. He earns another paycheque tonight.

Norman The Lunatic vs. Johnny Ace

BASTION BOOGER!!!

The Dragonmaster vs. Flyin Brian

Despite Pillman's deplorable grammar (missing an apostrophy), he's a Stampede kid, so he's got my vote.

NWA United States Title Match: Lex Luger defends vs. Junkyard Dog

Bigelow takes the fall earlier in the night, and here JYD drops one as well. Neither man grabs the momentum, heading into Havoc.

Non Title: The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair

Great to see Muta getting a lot of chances to headline. He's really making me reconsider what I've said about Sting.

NWA HALLOWEEN HAVOC

Sunday Week 4 October 1989

Heels Always Listed First

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match:The Fabulous Freebirds get a shot against The Steiner Brothers©

Does anybody on these boards honestly like hotshotting titles?

Chicago Street Fight: The Skyscrapers vs. The Road Warriors

This is my big upset of the night. I think we'll see somebody interfering on the Skyscrapers' behalf, transitioning the Road Warriors into another feud, and freeing up the 'Scrapers to challenge the Steiners. Any time you have babyface champions, that aren't the Road Warriors, the most important thing to do is keep the LOD busy. Otherwise, the "audience" will be clamouring for a Warriors title shot so much, they won't give a damn about what your champions are up to.

Cactus Jack vs. Steve Williams

Dr. Death has been pretty quiet, while Cactus Jack has been building this feud. If Williams doesn't go over, this will look like a bury job.

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta gets a shot against Sting©

I've put a lot of thought into this, and have decided to stick with my original call, that Sting will remain TV champ until he unseeds Luger for the US Title, allowing you to run a TV tournament. Muta taking the belt here, though, wouldn't surprise me.

(NWA United States Title Match?) Bam Bam Bigelow gets a shot against Junkyard Dog

As I said before, I'm not a JYD fan, so this is an easy pick for me. Kudos on kayfabing the US Title for us. That's class, dude.

(NWA United States Title Match?) Lex Luger defends vs. Ricky Steamboat

Steamboat is just so good at getting bounced all over the card, making everything around him better. He's a stopover challenger, before Sting/Luger. Steamboat will be a great rebound for Terry Funk.

NWA World Title Match, Steel Cage Match: Terry Funk gets a shot against Ric Flair©

Just like the real NWA, you're hitching your wagon to Flair. Nobody would ever hold that against you. This should be a great match.

Alright, wrestling fans, I have decided on another bit of a change in the schedule of when I am posting the cards. For both my USPW and my NWA diaries, I have decided not to specifically make the schedule to be on any certain day. I have made the decision that when I finish the card writeup, then I will put out the 24 hour warning. On the positive side, this means that instead of just 2 cards a week, we could possibly see up to 4 cards per week: 2 on each diary. On the negative side, it means that if I have a particularly busy week then we could see 0, 1 or 2 cards during the week. But I feel that this is the best way to do things so that I am not locked into a specific schedule plus people get time to predict. But you will also receive some backstage story as well, enough that I hope it will whet your whistle.

NWA POWER HOUR*

Dick Slater vs. Steve Williams

Bob Orton vs. Eddie Gilbert

The Iron Sheik vs. Scott Steiner

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Ricky Steamboat

While you are giving Bam Bam a solid build-up here, and thus I won't be surprised to see him win this, I just don't think he's solid enough to beat The Dragon. Later, sure, but not right now.

Buzz Sawyer vs. Scott Steiner

Norman The Lunatic vs. Johnny Ace

The Dragonmaster vs. Flyin Brian

NWA United States Title Match: Lex Luger defends vs. Junkyard Dog

No need to hotshot the titles around. Because really, if JYD wins, it's just to transition the title to Bam Bam.

Non Title: The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair

Same deal as with Bam Bam and Steamboat earlier.

NWA HALLOWEEN HAVOC

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match:The Fabulous Freebirds get a shot against The Steiner Brothers©

Chicago Street Fight: The Skyscrapers vs. The Road Warriors

It sets them up nicely to face the Steiners.

Cactus Jack vs. Steve Williams

Jack seems poised to jump up to a possible future title shot soon.

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta gets a shot against Sting©

This could be Cactus Jack's title match. A solid build, destroying Steve Williams, could set him up to feud with Sting over the TV title.

(NWA United States Title Match?) Bam Bam Bigelow gets a shot against Junkyard Dog

(NWA United States Title Match?) Lex Luger defends vs. Ricky Steamboat

Steamer possibly cheated in order to get a rematch and the belt at Starrcade.

NWA World Title Match, Steel Cage Match: Terry Funk gets a shot against Ric Flair©

As said earlier, nothing wrong with hooking the cart to Naitch.
