BAW: One man's dream

BAW Guilty Pleasure

Week 3, March 2010

The Weston Gymnasium, New Jersey

Attendance: 11

Pre-Show:

Backstage things were pretty much the same as always, with June being as distant as usual and Davis, Mr Lucha and Nigel being the life of the party. All in all, not too bad

Main Show:

Greg Gauge vs Stretch The Chicken Boy

This wasn’t a great match. I had hoped Greg might pull Stretch to an okay match, but he couldn’t manage it. Stretch looked well over his head out there. Greg dominated and picked up the win.

Winner: Greg Gauge in 6:43

Greg Gauge Promo

After his match, Greg Gauge demands a microphone.

Gauge: “What the hell was that? You put me in a match with a damn chicken? I’m the most talented man on this roster, and I’m put in matches with jokes.”

He stops for a second, and stomps on Stretch a couple of times.

Gauge: “I am Greg Gauge! I come from wrestling royalty! If I ever have to face jokes like ‘Stretch The Chicken Man’ ever again... I’m walking!”

With that he throws his mic to the ground, and storms angrily to the back.

Notes: Again the crowd just don’t buy into this. I really need to start getting some guys over to put on decent angles. As ever, the crowd hate Greg’s gimmick.... how long until I can change that?

El Ladron vs Mr Lucha III

Again not a great match. El Ladron had an off day, and looked tired towards the end. He also struggled with my instructions to go all out. Mr Lucha picked up the win.

Winner: Mr Lucha III in 8:54

Davis Wayne Newton vs Nigel Svennsson

This was a better match than the previous two had been, even if DWN had an off night. Neither man looked particularly good out there, but it was DWN who picked up the win. We really needed the main event to come off now.

Winner: Davis Wayne Newton in 8:37

© Brendan Idol vs Jayson Van Pelt

For the BAW Championship

I decided to give the best of my three new signings a title shot on debut, and I almost immendiately regretted it. The crowd just didn’t buy into Jayson at all. I tried to slow build it, but the match was probably too long. It dragged in the middle, with a noticeable lack of flow. In the end it was Brendan Idol who picked up the victory, retaining his Championship

Winner: Brendan Idol in 17:12

Match of the night: Davis Wayne Newton vs Nigel Svennsson

Trash of the night: Take your pick from the rest

Next time: Well that wasn’t a great show, can Danny improve next time?

I went into the creative meeting fearing the worst. After all, we had just put the worst show in our short history. However, much to my surprise Harvey didn’t seem overly bothered. He said that while it wasn’t as good as our other shows, it still should have increased our popularity in the area a little. He then thanked me for filling out the roster in the last month, and pointed to a new record attendance as a positive. However, he was less than happy that we had lost a record $5,251.

I left the meeting surprised, but relieved. As usual I picked up a copy of the local paper to see what they thought of the show. Finding the page, I saw that they agreed with my assessment:

PSW D+

NYCW

BAW E+

An E+? We had gone from being on NYCW’s tails to a whole grade point behind them.

Next Time: What changes will Danny make? Will BAW ever be able to put on a decent angle?

Great, TCW have made an offer for Wilson Carlisle. Normally promotions wouldn’t be too bothered about losing their ref, but the guys in the locker room all respect Wilson a lot and so do our fans. Harvey even has a theory that Wilson’s refereeing has been improving the quality of our matches! Oh, and Davis Wayne Newton’s signed an extension with 4C. How nice for him. CZCW have offered for Greg Gauge? That could work in our favour, as long as they don’t clash dates with us.

Wilson quickly accepts the TCW offer. Can’t say I blame him. He’s a fantastic ref, and this is his chance to get into the big leagues. Best of luck to the guy. I quickly got onto a couple of out of work ref’s. I needed to replace Wilson quickly, our next show was in less than two weeks. None of the available guys were anywhere near as good as Wilson, but that couldn’t be helped. I eventually agreed terms with Noel Madden, hopefully he’d do a good job for us.

With a new ref signed, I turned my attention to our next event. I was determined to improve on our last show. To start with, I decide to give our show a constant name rather than changing it up each month. From now on our events shall be called BAW: One Step Closer. Next I decided to bring back a couple of guys I hadn’t used on the previous show, and to give a debut to my latest signing.

Brendan Idol vs The Masked Outlaw (non-title)

It being a non-title match doesnt make sense to me unless the champion is going to lose cheaply, outside interference maybe?

Nigel Svensson vs Dermott Ayres

Dont really know Dermott, so sticking with what i know.

Cal Sanders vs Davis Wayne Newton

I like Newton :p.

Mr Lucha vs Greg Gauge

Kind of a mini #1 contender match to me, and with a face/heel divide, the heel must win.

Week 3, April 2010

The Weston Gymnasium, New Jersey

Attendance: 12

Pre-Show:

As I enter the backstage, I notice things aren’t quite as harmonious as normal. This is a problem, because we don’t have the greatest of dressing rooms at the best of times. I quickly spot our new Ref Noel Madden, and go over to introduce myself. I quickly realise the problem, as the man is just plain rude. I’d have to remember this when his contract runs...

Main Show:

Brendan Idol vs The Masked Outlaw

We started up with the champ in a non-title match. It wasn’t too bad a match, certainly better than last month’s opener. The match finished when a botched interference from Greg Gauge allowed Idol to hit the Idolizer and get the pin. Also, this was the first time I remembered The Masked Outlaw’s lack of stamina when booking this, so well done me.

Winner: Brendan Idol in 6:59

Brendan Idol & Greg Gauge Angle

After the match Greg Gauge grabs a mic.

Gauge: “Idol, me and you both know that the BAW Championship rightfully belongs to me! That’s why I’m challenging you to a title match next week!”

Idol is handed his belt and a microphone.

Idol: “Gauge I beat you fair and square to win this title two weeks ago. If you want another shot at MY title, you’re going to have to earn it.”

Gauge: “Earn it?”

Idol: “That’s right, because tonight you are going to be involved in a number one contenders match!”

Greg Gauge looks happy at this.

Idol: “And your opponent is going to be... Mr Lucha III!”

Idol drops his mic and rolls out of the ring, heading to the back. Gauge is left in the ring with a sadistic smile on his face.

Notes: This promo didn't go over great with the crowd, with both man's poor Gimmicks bring it down.

Nigel Svennson vs Dermott Ayres

Wow, this match didn’t go well. I put them in a Submission match to try and showcase Svennsson’s Technical abilities, but these two just didn’t seem to click at all. The two of them just looked awkward in the ring together; I’d have to try and remember not to put these two together again. Svennsson picked up the win.

Winner: Nigel Svennsson in 6:51

Cal Sanders vs Davis Wayne Newton

I decide to make the semi-main event much longer this week, and slow build this one. The match is much better than the previous match, but again these two just didn’t seem to click in the ring. This is another pairing I’d have to try to remember to avoid in the future. Davis Wayne Newton ended up with the win.

Winner: Davis Wayne Newton in 15:31

Mr Lucha III vs Greg Gauge

Number One Contenders Match

I’m beginning to question Greg Gauge’s motivation. I’ve seen him wrestle elsewhere, and he always looks much more intense elsewhere than he does when he’s in the ring for us. Despite this, him and Mr Lucha put on a good match for our Main Event. We slow build it, and the two manage to put on the best match I’ve seen in a BAW ring. Despite the crowd starting cold, the two manage to get them involved by the end of the match. In the end Gauge got the win by ramming Mr Lucha into an exposed turnbuckle, before locking in the Proton Lock.

Winner: Greg Gauge in 17:41

Match of the night: Main Event

Trash of the night: Svennsson vs Ayres

Next time: A much better show this month, but Danny does now have two sets of bad chemistry he has to work around...

I went into the Creative meeting on Tuesday morning feeling good. We had managed to recover well from last week’s poor show, and even held the best match in our company’s short history. My enthusiasm is shared by Harvey, who also points out that we even lost slightly less on our last show ($5,107). All in all things were looking up.

On my way home from the meeting, I picked up my monthly paper and excitedly turned to the wrestling section.

The paper agreed with our assessment of the show, and we were back on the heels of NYCW in terms of quality. Now we just had to focus on putting this type of show on consistently...

A week after our fourth show, I receive word that Greg Gauge has received another offer; this time from NOTBPW. Unfortunately this seemed to set the wheels in motion for a hectic few weeks, with WEXXV offering Greg Gauge a touring contract the very next day. Greg was one of the wrestlers I really couldn’t afford to lose, if he were to leave, it would leave a very big hole in my Main Event scene.

Speaking of my Main Event scene, the next day NYCW decided to put in offers for both Greg Gauge and Davis Wayne Newton! While it could see them gain popularity in the Tri-State area more quickly, I wouldn’t relish the prospect of two of my top talents appearing for the company that turned me down, and I am ultimately trying to compete with.

Well... I won’t have to worry about NYCW getting Greg Gauge, as he has signed a written deal with NOTBPW. This meant he was unavailable for the next show, and I needed to sign a replacement ASAP. I’d also have to have a rethink about my plans, as he was very central to the majority of them. Then, just to add insult to injury, Davis Wayne Newton has signed with NYCW. Well, at least we could still use him.

I quickly made a new signing. He wasn’t Greg Gauge by any means, but the kid was young and had talent. Maybe with time, and a bit of work, he could make something of himself here. Greg’s departure meant that I needed to reshuffle my roster. I jotted down some ideas, and eventually settled on this:

Main Event: Brendan Idol (Face), Mr Lucha II (Face), Davis Wayne Newton (Heel), The Masked Outlaw (Heel)

Upper Midcard: Ant-Man (Face), Nigel Svennsson (Face), Cal Sanders (Face), Stretch The Chicken Boy (Face), El Ladron (Heel)

Midcard: Dermott Ayres (Heel), Jayson Van Pelt (Heel)

Lower Midcard: New guy (Face)

I’ll admit it, our roster looks a LOT weaker without Greg. How the hell did Stretch The Chicken Boy get into my Upper Midcard? He has no business being there. With just over a week between Greg’s departure and our next show, this week’s card is a bit of a throwaway while I try to work out what I want to do next.

Mr Lucha III vs Jayson Van Pelt

Main eventers usually go over midcarders and I don´t see why that wouldn´t be the case here.

??? vs The Masked Outlaw

The mystery guy is lower midcarder so he won´t be winning much until he gains little more overness

Brendan Idol vs Dermott Ayres

Champ is kept strong.

Ant Man vs Davis Wayne Newton

After you lost Greg, DWN will likely be the challenger for Idol´s title

Sorry about not predicting recently, been off the site for a day or two and I've been working on catching up since then.

Mr Lucha III vs Jayson Van Pelt

With your stock of credible main eventers running low, Mr. Lucha III needs a win here

??? vs The Masked Outlaw

Masked Outlaw IS a main eventer... but he pretty much was buried by the champ a couple of shows ago. Toss your gatekeeper's overness to your new (most likely foreign) star, so he can move up the card a bit

Brendan Idol vs Dermott Ayres

No chance for Ayres

Ant Man vs Davis Wayne Newton

D-dubs moves into position to take on Idol

BAW One Step Closer #2

Week 3, May 2010

The Weston Gymnasium, New Jersey

Attendance: 14

Pre-Show:

When I arrive, I have to admit I wasn’t in the best of moods. I was still reeling from the news of losing my top guy, and then having to share his readymade replacement with my main competitor. The only reason I’d bothered to come backstage tonight was to meet our latest signing. I’d done the deal over the phone, and hadn’t seen the kid face to face before. As soon as he came over and introduced himself, I took an instant shine to the kid. He was just such a likeable guy, refreshingly enthusiastic. After our conversation, I have a quick word with June before leaving the backstage area.

Main Show:

Mr Lucha III vs Jayson Van Pelt

All in all this wasn’t a bad opening match. Hopefully it did its job in putting Mr Lucha over as a legitimate Main Eventer. Maybe I shouldn’t have asked them to go all out, as Jayson seemed to be struggling to keep up at some points in the match. Actually now that I think about it, Jayson just seemed to be having an off night tonight.

Winner: Mr Lucha in 8:22

Amazing Fire Fly vs The Masked Outlaw

I took a risk in giving the new kid a win on debut, and I’ll admit it could have gone better. Fire Fly’s gimmick didn’t seem to go down well with the crowd, which was a bit of a disappointment. Hopefully Fire Fly can build on this win and put on better matches in the future, I have high hopes for this kid.

Winner: Amazing Fire Fly in 5:46

Brendan Idol Angle

Idol hit’s the ring, with the title on his shoulder

Idol: “Now as I’m sure many of you know, Greg Gauge is no longer with BAW.”

He pauses, to a mixed reaction from the crowd.

Idol: “Now that means I have no number one contender for my title, but don’t look on that as a bad thing. All you guys out the back need to see this as an opportunity. This really throws the title picture wide open, and a couple of big performances could push anyone to the front of the pack. That process starts right now, so Dermott Ayres I hope you bring your A-game tonight!”

Notes: This segment went over better than many of the recent promos we have run. It still wasn’t world beating, but it was an improvement.

Brendan Idol vs Dermott Ayres

Wow, this was just... bad. In hindsight I made this one far too long, and this one dragged. A lack of flow in the middle was noticeable. Idol picked up the win, but I don’t think this one really helped him much.

Winner: Brendan Idol in 15:41

Ant-Man vs Davis Wayne Newton

Not a bad Main Event at all. Ant-Man really stepped up to the pressure of a main event, and looked really motivated to put a good match on. This one was easily match of the night. Newton picked up the win when he locked in the STF. Hopefully this will help the crowd see him as a legitimate title challenger.

Winner: Davis Wayne Newton in 16:37

Match of the night: Main Event

Trash of the night: Brendan Idol vs Dermott Ayres

Next time: That show was saved by a better than expected Main Event. Will Danny shake things up to cope with the loss of Greg Gauge?

Harvey had told me after the show that he had a stag do to attend, so there would be no creative meeting this week. I wasn’t too bothered; I didn’t particularly enjoy those things anyway. He also promised to send me an email with any important thoughts he had on the last show. To my surprise his email arrived around lunch time the next day. It simply stated:

Last night’s loss was $4495. A new record low for BAW.

Regards

Harvey

Short and sweet I guess? After lunch I decided to go and pick up my monthly local paper to see how they rated our last show.

PSW D+

NYCW D+

BAW D-

Not as good a rating as our last show, but not too bad considering we had just lost or main heel. Maybe we could cope with the loss of Greg Gauge after all...

I spent the majority of this month trying to come up with ideas of what I wanted to do with BAW now that Greg Gauge had gone. Most of my focus naturally focused around our title. After jotting a few ideas down, I came up with a plan I was fairly happy with. It would take a while to implement, but as long as we didn’t lose anyone else, it could work.

Other than that, we managed to extend Dermott Ayres month for another six months, quite a useful piece of business if I do say so myself. He’s cheap, we need to keep roster numbers up and my creative team thinks he could develop into something decent.

BAW One Step Closer #3

Week 3, June 2010

The Weston Gymnasium, New Jersey

Attendance: 30 (!)

Pre-Show:

The backstage atmosphere was about the same as ever, that’s to say not great. Noel Madden was being his rude and sullen self, and June was just as distant as usual. Luckily I had Firefly, Svennsson, Mr Lucha and Davis Wayne Newton to help me try and pick people’s spirits up.

Main Show:

Mr Lucha III vs Jayson Van Pelt

I couldn’t think of a legitimate opener, so I borrowed this one from last week. Again it was an okay match, but again Jayson seemed to be really off his game tonight. I’ll have to keep an eye on him to ensure this isn’t a regular occurance. Mr Lucha picks up the win, to hopefully build some momentum.

Winner: Mr Lucha III in 8:31

Cal Sanders vs The Masked Outlaw

This didn’t go over as well as I had hoped. Outlaw’s stamina is becoming a real problem; having a Main Eventer who can’t go over 7 minutes is starting to seem like a bit of a waste to me, and the crowd are really getting on Outlaw’s back about it. Still it was Outlaw who picked up the win.

Winner: The Masked Outlaw in 6:04

Davis Wayne Newton Angle

Davis Wayne Newton makes his way to the ring Mic in hand.

DWN: “I have been telling you people for months now that I am the most talented man in this company. Well, it seems that BAW management agrees with me, because they’ve granted me a title shot at next month’s One Step Closer.”

He pauses to the boo’s of the crowd.

DWN: “There isn’t one man on the roster who can compare to my abilities. Not one man in this company can compare to my in-ring skills, nobody can keep up with me on the mic, and you can be damn sure that nobody else has my natural charisma and good looks. Let me tell you now, that these three skills will take me right to the top of Big Apple Wrestling.”

Another pause.

DWN: “Because I am “The Triple Threat” Davis Wayne Newton, and next week... I WILL be your new BAW Champion.”

Notes: I am constantly being told by my creative team that DWN is our best guy on the mic, but when I give him mic he just doesn’t impress me. This again wasn’t a great promo, and the crowd just didn’t get into it.

Nigel Svennsson vs Davis Wayne Newton

Not a bad match between these two, certainly the best match Svennsson has put on in his time at BAW. Davis Wayne Newton picked up the win, and encouragingly looked like he was picking some Technical skills from Svennsson out there.

Winner: Davis Wayne Newton in 10:37

© Brendan Idol vs El Ladron

For The BAW Championship

This was a bit of a throw away Title defence, as Idol hadn’t defended in 3 months. Unfortunately this match bombed. Idol looked really off his game, and I made the match too long and it dragged in the middle. I need to learn to book Idol better, as I am killing his momentum at the moment. Not the way I wanted to end a show in front of our biggest crowd yet.

Winner: Brendan Idol in 15:43

Match of the night: Davis Wayne Newton vs Nigel Svennsson

Trash of the night: Main Event

Next time: With Brendan Idol turning in the worst match in both of the previous two shows, will Danny lose faith in the champ? (Or will he decide that it’s actually his own fault, and learn to book him properly?)

Okay, so the last show was bad. I went into the ‘creative’ meeting fearing the worst, but once again Harvey was singing my praises. He seemed so stoked about us doing better than double our previous best attendance at the last show that he had forgotten about the lousy show we had put on. He kept going on about how we had reached a new level of popularity, and that we needed to push on from this point. He also pointed out that we had managed to lose less than five grand for the second month running, which was another positive sign. We had lost $4,838 on our last show. Whatever, I was just happy to get out of that meeting with my head still firmly attached my shoulders.

After all the praise from Harvey in the creative meeting, I thought that maybe our show hadn’t been quite as bad as I imagined. I decided to buy my monthly local paper to test my theory...

PSW D+

NYCW D

BAW E+

Ouch! So I was right, that was the equal worst show we had put on in our history, so much for the progression Harvey had been talking about. Next month I had to make sure we got back on track.

OOC: In case you didn’t pick it up from the ‘creative’ meeting, we have grown to F popularity in Tri-State :)

2 months ago I had a month to forget. I lost my main star in Greg Gauge, and my ready made replacement for Gauge, Davis Wayne Newton, signed with my main competition NYCW. Now this month both PSW and CGC had offered for Davis' services. The negotiations dragged on for nearly 2 weeks, but eventually Davis agreed to sign a Written deal with CGC. I guess I can take some comfort in that this happened just 5 days before our next show. At least this time I’d be able to give the crowd the title match I had promised them the week before. Actually that’s a point... maybe I should stop announcing title matches in advance? Never the less, for the second time in two months, I had lost the best wrestler on my roster...
