UFC 24: Millenium Mayhem

UFC 24 had a couple of problems at the weigh ins with Amaury Bitetti weighing in at 7lbs above the 170lb Lightweight limit Matt Hughes agreed to fight him with Bitetti giving up 10% of his purse. Jorge Patino weighed in at 10lbs over the Lightweight limit for his fight with Sean Sherk (who himself came in well below the 170lb limit) Patino gives up 20% of his purse.

Not alot of action in the first with both fighters trying to find their range Arlovski pressed a little more than Turner and should of took the round. Neither fighter wants to take the fight to the ground as proven in the second when they end up in clinches a couple of time and rather than wrestle both seperate and throw strikes again. A quick exchange of strikes with 30 seconds left of the second produces little, they end up close and both throw wild punches and the fight finally gets exciting ... Arlovski takes a huge right from Turner and he is knocked out cold!

Both men want to Wrestler but it is Lacjik that is outwrestling Otavio in the early going and The Bohemian prevents Otavio taking him down in the first whilst out working him against the cage wall. Otavio finally looks like outworking Lacjik but they end up against the cage with Otavio working Lacjik for over a minute. Otavio goes for a takedown against the cage wall and Lacjik just allows it and pulls guard. Otavio is breathing hard and it is Lacjik who goes for a Submission from the bottom, a Guillotine but he can't get it good. The second round comes to a close with the fans booing the lack of action. Little happens in the first with Otavio being pretty gassed and Lacjik preventing any takedowns, this one will go to the JUdges.

Dan Severn uses a flurry to force Freeman to cover up and then go for a takedown .. It's succesful and Ian Freeman pulls guard. Severn passes guard easily and takes control first hitting a few knees to the ribs and then managing to take Freemans back getting in the first hook but Freeman battles back and does not allow Severn to take his chin, the Beats is looking for the Rear Naked Choke. Severn starts swinging his fist around Freemans head striking him from behind and he is taking a beating as the clock runs down in the first round ... He can't take much more .. That is it, the referee has seen enough.

Sherk hits a couple of good strikes in the early going including a nice looking uppercut, but Patino gets in close and takes him down just6 inside the 3rd minute. Sherk tries to roll away preventing Patino from getting the mount but this allows him to take his back instead and he goes for the Rear Naked Choke but can't get it locked in and Sean Sherk lost the battle in the first round. Jorge Patino took alot of strikes in the second but managed to cover up well. Sherk avoids a takedown attempt from Patino and hits a couple of huge rights to the body of Patino as he gets our of range, a few more good strikes from Sherk and the third round and the fight comes to a close.

Pulver is using a quick paced style to dart in and out of range of the much bigger Macias hitting a few quick strikes and shooting for quick takedowns. Right at the end of the first round Macias catches Pulver and out muscles him in the clinch maybe doing enough to take the round. Pulver shoots in for Macias who proves the better in the scrambler and Pulver ebnmds up turtled up and Macias easily rolls him down and takes him in side control. Macias tries to get the mount but when he realises Pulver isn't going to let him he stands and wants to strike. Macias is out muscling Pulver every chance he gets and we go into a third round. Macias hits a couple of very hard kicks to the legs of Pulver trying to slow him down as Macias is starting to tire, soon Macias has Pulver pressed against the cage and out wrestles him against the cage wall to close out the round and the fight.

Within 30 seconds Matt Hughes has shot in and took Bitetti down to the ground withn a single leg. Hughes tries to mount Bitetti after easily taking side control but Bitetti tries to sweep from the mount attempt, but gets rolled and ends up giving Hughes his back. Bitetti does battle well but as soon has Hughes had his hooks in it looked inevitable that he would get the Rear Naked Choke and it is all over.

Shamrock stays out of range of Ruttens strikes in the early going, Rutten manages to out muscle Shamrock has they clinch and force him back against the cage wall. Rutten steps back and goes to strike Shamrock whilst he is against the wall but the attempt sail wide as Shamrock dodges well. They end up clinched again and this time Shamrock tries to suck Rutten to the ground wrapping his legs around the dutchmans waist, but it's no use and Bas Rutten manages to force Shamrock back and once again he controls him against the cage. In the second Rutten misses a left jab and Shamrock strikes back with a barrage of big right hands. Bas Rutten is outmuscling Frank Shamrock in the clinches and uses some dirty boxing to get some strikes in. Shamrock comes back at Rutten after a missed left jab and againt hits a barrage of hard rights ... Bas Rutten is looking shaky after that last strike and appears very rubbery legged, and a massive right cross from Shamrock knocks Rutten down. E£l Guapo shakes off the cobwebs and takes a few strikes on the ground but sees out the round. Advancing Shamrock counters a left jab by using two hard right hands, looking very tired Shamrock goes for a takedown but Rutten sprawls well and Shamrock ends up turtled up, Rutten rolls Shamrock out of the turtle position and into side control .. El Guapo soon gets frustrated and stands back up wanting the fight on his feet, and now Rutten is breathing very hard. Rutten uses some dirty boxing to inflict some punishment and Shamrock is caught with a couple of nice short punches. Shamrock is happy to let Rutten circle and we have less than a minute to go ... Shamrock looks drained but comes forward looking for a takedown as the clock tics away .. A very close third round comes to a close. Has Bas Rutten done enough!?

Well Ken Shamrock makes it past the 20 second mark this time and it was he who came out quicker going for a quick couple of strikes and forcing Couture back. A quick executed one-two combination sets up a takedown attempt from Couture Shamrock tries to avoid the takedown but Couture is succesful and Shamrock pulls guard. Couture shows his good wrestling ability and takes side control but his strikes are easily caught on Shamrocks gloves. A feint sets up Couture perfectlu to try to get a knock out with a scorching right cross, but Shamrock sees it at the last possible moment and ducks under .. A quick single leg from Couture sees him take Shamrock down, he is content to throw a couple of punches to the body of the Worlds most Dangerous man has he catches his breath. Randy Couture begins punding away with elbow strikes and he is landing some clean hard strikes, Shamrock is taking a beating here ... The referee has no option but to step in and stop the fight.

K-1 UFC presents,

Yamamiya is the first in for a takedown, a quick double leg attempt from close range but Semenov blocked it well. Using good head movement Semenov slips past a left jab and counters with a kick to the inside of the left thigh .. Yamamiya falls down, clutching at his groin.. That kick accidently caught him a little south of the border. He looks like he will be able to continue .. He just needs a minute to recover. An outside leg trip sees Semenov take Yamamiya down with 2 minute left of the first. Into the second and it is Yamamiya outwrestling Semenov, but right at the end Semenov scores another takedown and he probably has the first two rounds. Yamamiya didn't do enough in the third and the fight comes to a close.

"This goes to the Judges and all three score the fight 30-27 to the Winner Via Unanimous Decision: 'The White Shark' Andrei Semenov!" (Decent)

Bull hits two big rights within the first 10 seconds to introduce himself to Yamamoto. Slot of action in a great round sees Bull close out the first with a takedown in the last couple of seconds. A much earlier takedown by Bull in the second sees Bull dominate on the ground smothering Yamamoto but eventually the ref decides there is not enough going on and the fight is stood up with less than a minute to go, they exchange strikes and as Bull gets close he goes for a sweep and takes Yamamoto down going immediately for the Kimura but Yamamoto defends well and survives the round and into the third we go. Yamamoto tries to prevent a single leg but Bull is too strog and takes him down almost gaining side control but he fails, but does almost get a Triangle. Yamamoto manages to scramble and get top control but still Bull attempts a submission from the bottom he is relentless but as the round and fight closes out he is trying to go for an Armbar ... But we will go to the judges.

Albritton comes in swinging but it was a cover for a shoot and he takes Sakurai down to the mat .. A pretty boring round. Sakurai traps Albritton up against the cage wall and uses the wall as leverage to take his opponent down. They are soon stood back up again and Albritton manages to hit Sakurai with a few decent strikes. Into the third and Albritton looks like he has nothing left in the tank .. Sakurai couldn't take too much advantage though but should of done enough to win the third ... But which way will the Judges score it!?

Shoji keeps on trying for a takedown and for most of the first round Gipson succesfully defends but after Gipson gets Shoji up against the cage hitting a few knees Shoji manages to use the cage for a boost and takes Gipson down. Tank begins limping slightly after suffering at the hands of Takahashi kicks to his legs with the Japanese fighter using the kicks to keep out of Tanks hammer fist range. Into the second and Tank comes out swinging with Takahashi just being caught off balance with a huge right cross after a barrage of big rights. Takahashi allows Tank to circle not worrying as long as he is out of range .. But Tank suddenly steps in and avoiding a leg kick he hits off a huge right cross and Takahashi is knocked clean out!

Sato stops Serao's early takedown attempt and when Sato goes for a takedown of his won Serao not only stops it but pulls Sato down and into a loose facelock onto his knees. Into the second round after a few exchanges of strikes and alot of feeling out Serao waits for Sato to step in close and then scores with a quick takedown and it looks as though Sato doesn't have much left in the tank. After a scramble to their feet Sato is moving forward and counters a left jab with a barrage of big punches. Into the third and it is Sato again that fires off on Serao with a barrage of huge rights. Sato does look on the verge of exhaustion though and that is it from him just seeing out the round keeping out of Seraos range.

Henderson feints an high kick and forces Sakurana back with a couple of low kicks. Henderson clearly wants to strike with Sakuraba getting close whenever he can .. Sakuraba tries to take Henderson down once they are close but Henderson proves to be the better wrestler but his instead shoved up against the cage. Sakuraba is trying to get up and onto the back of Henderson for a choke but Henderson keeps calm and cool preventing him from doing so. Stubbernly Henderson hangs on and stops Sakuraba from takeing him down. Sakauraba is lucky early in the second dodging some huge strike attempts from Henderson both fighters prevent takedown attempt from each other until Henderson sprawls and rolls up Sakuraba into turtle position and gets him down and into side control .. Once mounted Henderson pounds away and Sakuraba is struggling with his punches ... And the referee has seen enough he steps in and stops the fight.

Some solid kicks from Tuli in the first before the big former Sumo Fighter took The Janitor down with a double leg and after taking his back was just looking for the Rear Naked Choke as the bell went for end of round 1. A scything leg kicks early on and then a big right kick to the outside of Matyushenko's thigh sees the Belaussian try to protect his clearly injured wheel. A trip takedown by Tuli sees him overpower the man he has over 200lbs on and landing on him he goes for a Guillotine and forces Matyushenko to tap.

Alot of feeling out for the first ghalf of the first round until a left jab from Heath Herring misses the mark and allows Freeman to counter with several big right hands, putting Herring down, dazed. For 10 seconds Ian Freemand senses victory coming and unloads with a barrage of big punches landing several that clearly hurt Herring but the Texas Crazy Horse pulls guard stopping th onslaught and Freeman doesn't want any part of a ground battle standing back up and Herring is back up as well. Just a few seconds later and Heath Herring shoots in taking Freeman down passing Freemans guard easily and getting into mount before pounding away with elbows, but few of the shots are landing clean. Herring goes with a few big punches and that is it Freeman cannot stop the onslaught now ...

Severn avoids a nice combination and then closes the gap to drag Frye into a grappling contest .. Severn muscles Frye back up against the cage. Unable to break free, Frye is smothered up against the cage, taking short blows for over 60 seconds. Severn tries to hit an elbow but Frye switches it around he he is now in control .. Frywe steps back from the cage they both go for strikes and miss ending up grappling again, and again Severn shoves Frye against the cage wall .. And then time soon runs down just as Frye once again reverse things. Severn dodges a strike from Fyre and he wants to grapple and just like in the first round he shoves Frye up against the cage wall .. Dirty Boxing from Severn and Frye takes his chance reversing things and he has Severn up against the cage .. Eventually the referee bring them back to the center after little progress is made. With a minute left in the first Severn pushes Frye up against the cage wall and with a Greco-Roman slam he floors Frye, Severn goes for a Guillotine Choke but there isn't much time left and the round comes to a close. Severn is staying out of the way of Frye's strikes but neither man really looks like they have much left in the tank ... Frye is looking for a knockout but nothing really lands how he would like he is way too exhausted and Severn is happy to see that round out.

Barnett looks like he wants to grapple with Couture and he gets in close pulling him into a muay thai clinch .. Both fighters are looking happy to exchange strikes .. Couture is soon trying to earn a takedown but twice Barnett blocks the attempt and the first round comes to a close. Couture is again pulled into a Muay Thai clinch but again he uses his wrestling to get back out after half blocking a knee strike .. Couture wants to wrestle and the grappling contest is on first Barnett almost has Couture against the cage but then Couture takes control but Barnett will not budge .. Couture tries to lift Barnett for a slam, fails and then fails with a follow up shoot .. And it is Barnett who retakes control and he has Couture up against the cage The Babyfaced Assassin controls Couture against the cage wall for over 30 seconds ..
