WWF 1989: Where Sports Entertainment Comes Alive...Again!

-Welcome to my brand new WWF 1989 diary.

-The format of this diary will have a full writeup for Prime Time Wrestling, a medium writeup for Superstars and a brief writeup for Wrestling Challenge.

-As always, certain other companies will have their results posted in brief format.

-Kayfabe will be maintained within this diary so there is no backstory other than what the WWF has done up until September 1989.

-The one thing that I will bring up is that I have changed Prime Time Wrestling to become a live show run on Mondays.

-Usually, there is a squash format on most of the shows but TEW2010 is not entirely conducive to this format. So there will be some squashes on the shows but there will also be some major matches that normally you wouldn't see on WWF Prime Time Wrestling.

-Thank you to jhd1 for the graphics.

-The diary is coming soon.

Looking forward to this one, my friend!

Million Dollar Man vs. Bret Hart

I think Bret's still a tag man at this point in his career, and Ted DiBiase is most certainly a main eventer.

The Brooklyn Brawler vs. Tito Santana

Proper 80s wrestling - jobber vs star! I didn't mind Tito Santana, and he should have a fun feud with Rick Martel (it is at that point, right?).

Non Title: The Brainbusters vs. The Bushwackers

Even in a non-title match, The Bushwackers aren't going to beat Arn and Tully.

Bad News Brown vs. Barry Horowitz

Star vs Jobber.

Rick Rude vs. Dusty Rhodes

Probably the toughest one on the card to call - I'm going for Rude, simply because he'd find a way to win one way or another.

WWF World Heavyweight Title Match: Hulk Hogan defends vs. Macho Man

Too soon for a title change, but it should be a great match!

Million Dollar Man vs. Bret Hart

Comment: Dibiase is top heel, Bret is elevated up the card even with the loss

The Brooklyn Brawler vs. Tito Santana

Comment: Tito needs some wins to build his MO, before eventually taking losses ot the stars at this point in his career

Non Title: The Brainbusters vs. The Bushwackers

Comment: Maybe somehow the bushwackers revert to the Sheepherders, either way they wont beat Tully & Arn

Bad News Brown vs. Barry Horowitz

Comment: SQUASH

Rick Rude vs. Dusty Rhodes

Comment: I say go with the guy with bigger potential here... Rhodes will always be looked at as a NWA guy, he can make Rude a star

WWF World Heavyweight Title Match: Hulk Hogan defends vs. Macho Man

Comment: Beginning a new diary, I say lose Hulk... Macho Man can carry the promotion by having better matches with this great roster

Very much excited by this one mate, hope it's a good one!

Million Dollar Man vs. Bret Hart

DiBiase wins but Bret looks good and gets a bit of a rub here

The Brooklyn Brawler vs. Tito Santana

Classic squash

Non Title: The Brainbusters vs. The Bushwackers

Easy enough for The Brainbusters

Bad News Brown vs. Barry Horowitz

Squash

Rick Rude vs. Dusty Rhodes

Dusty makes Rude look great here

WWF World Heavyweight Title Match: Hulk Hogan defends vs. Macho Man

DQ finish or Hogan retains by count out, can't see a clean finish or a title change on regular TV.

Nice. Let's rock.

Million Dollar Man vs. Bret Hart

I'm hoping for a DiBiase moon push - by 1989 the novelty might have worn off but he's one of the most solid workers on a stacked roster of super workers

The Brooklyn Brawler vs. Tito Santana

Arriba! One last run in the sun for El Matador!

Non Title: The Brainbusters vs. The Bushwackers

I'm with Oldschool - a frenzied weapons filled cage match between the Sheepherders and the (Work)Horsemen would be gold.

Bad News Brown vs. Barry Horowitz

HORROWTIZ LOSES! HORROWTIZ LOSES!! The prototype Stone Cold to go on a run!

Rick Rude vs. Dusty Rhodes

Going with the consensus here, although I wont be too disheartened to see Dusty take it. Rhodes is a great kingmaker for the heels - Rhodes will be setting up the next man to run at Hogan...

WWF World Heavyweight Title Match: Hulk Hogan defends vs. Macho Man

Speaking of whom, while I'd love to see Macho take the strap back, I can't see it happening on TV. As I've said above, I'd like to see DiBiase get the rub... but there really are so many ways to go with the WWF at this point and time that I'm almost jealous of your freedom!

WWF PRIME TIME WRESTLING!

Monday Week 1 September 1989

Million Dollar Man vs. Bret Hart

Comment: Know what I'd love to see AD try and pull off in this one? A Hart Foundation heel turn. Knowing how most of his 89 diaries have gone, this'll only last for about a month in-game anyways :p just teasing man!

The Brooklyn Brawler vs. Tito Santana

Comment: Big squash win for Chico.

Non Title: The Brainbusters vs. The Bushwackers

Comment: Ugh....yeah....

Bad News Brown vs. Barry Horowitz

Comment: Just a squash or is BNB gonna grab a quick push? Only AD knows!

Rick Rude vs. Dusty Rhodes

Comment: Rude being the IC champ means he should be looking strong. "Strong" is not defined by losing to fat men in polka dots.

WWF World Heavyweight Title Match: Hulk Hogan defends vs. Macho Man

Comment: Possibly some type of DQ here, whatever goes down Hogan retains.

Signs:

Fat Out of Shape Sweathog

Attendance: 10,000

Overall Rating: B

TV Rating: 1.75

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/PrimeTimePoster.jpg

[The show begins with a recap from WWF Prime Time Wrestling. Highlights include wins by Million Dollar Man, Rick Rude and Hulk Hogan. Other highlights include the opening interview between Macho Man and Hulk Hogan and the attack by Andre The Giant on The Ultimate Warrior! It ends with the attack by Zeus on Hulk Hogan that ended WWF Prime Time Wrestling.]

Match #1

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/zeus.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/VS.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/barryhorowitz2.jpg

Zeus vs. Barry Horowitz

[Horowitz definitely looked intimated as the large Zeus came down to the ring. But he showed some heart by attacking Zeus as the big man came into the ring. Zeus just shoved Horowitz down to the mat. Horowitz tried to fight back but Zeus just no-sold everything in his path. He took down Horowitz with a hard clothesline and then picked him up and body slammed him down to the mat. As Zeus yelled at the crowd, one member of the crowd held up a sign reading: 'No Holds Barfed!' Zeus growled and bent over, choking the life out of Horowitz! The referee made him break the hold at a four count but as soon as he let go of the choke hold, Horowitz threw in the towel, giving a submission victory to Zeus.]

Winner: Zeus (Via Submission @ 6:06)

Match Rating: D

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/hulkhogan5.jpg

[We are taken to a pre-recorded interview with none other than 'The Immortal' Hulk Hogan! As Hogan talks, his voice is obviously hurting with a sore throat from the attack by Zeus on Prime Time Wrestling. Hogan tells his Hulkamaniacs to listen up, brothers, because that big nasty monster Zeus is not going to get the last laugh on him or Hulkamania. Hulkamania lives forever, brother. And with the power of the Hulkamaniacs, at WWF Saturday Night's Main Event, Zeus is going to have to ask himself a question. Whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when the power of Hulkamania and all the Hulkamaniacs runs wild over you?]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/tugboat.jpg

[A music video begins out over the water of a harbor. A lot of yachts and other expensive boats are shown floating on the crystal blue seas. Then the visage of a tugboat is slowly shown in the background. It becomes clearer and clearer and then the camera zooms in on on the man driving the tugboat. He smiles at the camera and makes the *toot* *toot* sound of the Tugboat.

TUGBOAT...COMING SOON TO THE WWF!]

Match #2

Greg Valentine vs. Jake 'The Snake' Roberts

[An excellent matchup this morning between two veterans inside the ring. Valentine shows he is not to be messed with as he focuses in on the leg of Roberts throughout the match, getting the crowd sympathy for 'The Snake.' The crowd begins chanting his name and Roberts responds by kicking out of a figure 4 attempt by Valentine! Roberts comes back with a short arm clothesline and then twirls his finger in the air. A chant of 'DDT' breaks through the crowd. Roberts picks up Valentine -- DDT! He connects with it and rolls over the pinfall: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Jake 'The Snake' Roberts (Via Pinfall @ 7:47)

Match Rating: B+

[With the victory secured for Jake 'The Snake' Roberts, he gets to his feet and walks over to the snake bag. He gives that evil smile for a moment as he opens the bag and walks back over to Greg Valentine. He raises the bag and then drops Damian on top of the unconcious Valentine. The crowd cheers as the snake crawls all over The Hammer.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/WWF.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/dinobravo.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/jimmyhart3.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/ultimatewarrior.jpg

['The Canadian Strongman' Dino Bravo and 'The Mouth of the South' Jimmy Hart enter the ring first for this Test of Strength Challenge, drawing boos from the crowd. Jimmy Hart shouts encouragement to Bravo through the megaphone and then out comes the WWF Intercontinental Champion The Ultimate Warrior! As the camera pans the crowd's reaction, we pick up a sign that reads: 'I'm here for The Young Stallions!' The crowd erupts with cheers for the Ultimate Warrior as he runs down to the ring and slides inside, facing off with Dino Bravo inside the ring. The two men go through a series of challenges but move into almost a stalemate, though the crowd clearly favors Warrior. Dino Bravo exits the ring and approaches a man in the audience. He asks him to come into the ring. This man looks surprised at this but the crowd cheers him on.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/earthquake.jpg

[The large man enters the ring and explains that he weighs 460 pounds! Dino Bravo gets set up in a push up position and eventually does 3 pushups with the entire weight of this large man on top of his back! What a show of strength! Bravo tells the Ultimate Warrior to beat that! Warrior sets up in the push up position and this large man moves to get on his back. Warrior starts to go down and the large man leaps and comes down on the back of the Ultimate Warrior! Dino Bravo comes in with elbow drops on The Ultimate Warrior! He sets up Warrior and the large man comes in with a splash! Another splash! Warrior is laid out! Dino Bravo, the large man and Jimmy Hart exit the ring as Gorilla Monsoon cries foul on this one!]

Match #3

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/teddibease3.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/virigil.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/VS.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WWF/JimmySnuka2.jpg

Million Dollar Man vs. Superfly

[Our main event match of the evening and this is a good one as the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase steps into the ring with Superfly Jimmy Snuka. A solid one on one match that sees both men get in some offense. The man from the Fiji Islands nearly scores a victory over the Million Dollar Man when he scores with a flying forearm and then a vertical suplex. Virgil leans in and distracts Superfly. Virgil takes a punch but the distraction does it's job as the Million Dollar Man comes back into the match. The Million Dollar Man brings Superfly down with a back elbow and then drops a fist on Superfly. DiBiase pulls Superfly up and sends him to the ropes -- powerslam! The Million Dollar Man picks up Superfly -- Million Dollar Dream! Superfly struggles, trying to break free. But no one breaks free from the Million Dollar Dream and he eventually has to give up.]

Winner: Million Dollar Man (Via Submission @ 10:28)

Match Rating: B+

[Million Dollar Man holds on to the Dream after the match with the referee threatening to reverse the decision. He finally shoves Superfly down to the mat as Virgil enters the ring. Virgil hands the Million Dollar Man a few bills and DiBiase walks over to Superfly, stuffing the money down his throat! The crowd boos as Million Dollar Man gets his arm raised to end the show.]
