Matches to make following UFC 145.

by Eric Stockton.

With UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans done, it’s time to look at matches to make after the event.

Mac Danzig vs. Diego Sanchez- Although not announced by Sanchez, there is a lot of talk that he is moving down to lightweight again & why not great him back at lightweight with another former TUF winner, Mac Danzig. Danzig is one of the most underrated lightweights in the UFC, who can compete standing up and on the ground. Danzig should provide a good fight for Sanchez.

Efrain Escudero vs. Dennis Hallman- If Efrain is not released after this event then he should fight some easier competition, and who is not better then Dennis Hallman, who seems to have gotten new life at 155 with his submission win over John Makdessi at UFC 140.

Matt Wiman vs. Jeremy Stephens- Wiman and Stephens arguable have the two best power in the lightweight division so why note have them fight each other, could be a fight to see who hits first.

Mark Bocek vs. George Sotiropoulos- Bocek has one of the best BJJ skills in the lightweight division, but George has one of the best ground games in the UFC, so put these two together and you get one hell of a ground match.

Ben Rothwell vs. Mike Russow- Ben Rothwell and Mike Russow may not have the best cardio in the Heavyweight division, but they both can get the job down. These two fighters should fight each other, may not be the most exciting fight after the second round, but if one of them were to finish the other one it could very well make them into a top contender.

Brendan Schaub vs. Matt Mitrione- Schaub and Mitrione are two of the three fighters from one of the worst TUF cast in UFC history, TUF 10, so why note have these two fighters, who are known to stand with their opponent, fight in a fight that is sure to bring fireworks until one of them goes down.

Miguel Torres vs. Brian Bowles- Bowles and Torres both meet before at WEC 42, when Bowles KO’d Torres to win the Bantamweight championwhip, since then Torres has gone 4-2 and Bowles has gone 2-2, so why not have these two elite in the bantamweight division challenge each other again.

Michael McDonald vs. Brad Pickett- The bantamweight’s youngest fighter vs. one of the older fighters, would this match up be. McDonald lost his first fight in the ZUFFA banner against Torres, by unanimous decision. Meanwhile Pickett has been in an up and down in the ZUFFA banner, losing to Renan Barao in his UFC debut, but submitting Damacio Page in his last bout.

Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson- It is no surprise that Hendo will be facing Jones for the title, should he have been successful in beating Evans, however it did surprise everyone that this fight will be happening at MSG. Anyways Hendo should be a good challenge for the unsolvable Jones.

Rashad Evans vs. Ryan Bader- Two college wrestler and TUF winners, who are both coming off a lost, this fight could be a classic wrestler vs. wrestler match were it is all standing, or could be a wrestler vs. wrestler match where one tries to out wrestle the other. Ether way it should be a good fight.

UFC on 145 pre-fight press conference notes.

by Brad MacDuggon.

Today was the pre-fight press conference for UFC 145, and here are some notes from the press conference.

UFC will be hosting two fan expos this year, first one will be during the UFC 148 weekend and the second one will be in New York for the UFC 149 weekend.

Mark Munoz and Chris Weidman will be fighting at UFC 149, with the winner getting a title shot.

Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez will fight at UFC on FX 3, for the Flyweight Title.

The rivalry between Jones and Evans got heated with this exchange:

Evans: “Jon Jones has never fought anyone that is good, he’s only fought cans.”

Jones: “Oh really, that’s why I choked out the only man to beat you, Lyoto Machida.”

Evans: “That was lucky.”

Jones: “Next you are going to say Rampage dropping you was lucky. Never did that to me.”

Evans: “He only dropped me because I knew I had the win in the bag.”

Jones: “Sure, who have you fought to get this title shot? Thiago Silva and Tito Ortiz? Wow that is an impressive streak.”

Evans: “Who did you beat to get the title shot? Vera, Bonnar and Bader. Wow that is just as impressive as mine.”

Jones: “And you are calling me a swagger jacker.”

Evans: “That’s because you are one.”

Jones: “At least I can come up with my own thing to respond to you, not say the exact same thing you said right before me.”

Evans: “I will beat your ass.”

Jones: “You’re gonna beat my ass?”

Evans: “Yeah I will beat your ass.”

Jones: “Wow now you are coping Rampage. Talk to me when you have something unique.”

Evans: “Don’t worry, I use my fist to talk.”

Jones: “Wow, then your talking must be really weak.”

I thought this was good, it adds more to the dynasty.

Matches to make following UFC on Fox 3

by Eric Stockton.

With UFC on Fox 3: Mir vs. Werdum done, it’s time to look at matches to make after the event.

Pat Barry vs. Kevin Fergusson- Two of the heavyweight division’s most loved fighters, Barry and the man known as Kimbo Slice love to strike with anyone and if these two were to fight, that’s just what would happen. Slice is making his return back into the octagon after being released by the UFC and being told he would never fight here again, then signing with Strikeforce and being moved into the UFC when the Strikeforce heavyweight division was closed.

Lavar Johnson vs. Brendan Schuab- Monsters in the UFC heavyweight division weighing in over 240 pounds and stand at 6’4”, Johnson and Schuab are two powerful fighters who are both around the same on the heavyweight ladder, with Schuab losing his last 2 fights and Johnson winning his first 2 UFC fights.

Nate Diaz vs. Frankie Edgar- This fight makes sense as Dana White said that the winner of Miller and Diaz will face Edgar, with Diaz winning his last three fights, two by first round stoppage over game opponents and another one over a tough fighters in Donald Cerrone.

Jim Miller vs. Glesion Tibau- Two of the sports best submission artist and are also strong lightweights. These two fighters are also near the top of the lightweight division, with Miller losing his fight tonight and Tibau on a winning streak.

Frank Mir vs. Gabriel Gonzaga- In a division where submission fighters are as hard to come by as a fighter who can go 5 rounds without gassing, these two fighters who have been known to finish their fights by submission as well as knockout. A fight between these two fighters could help light a spark in these two who have not reached their potential.

Fabricio Werdum vs. Cain Velasquez- Since coming back to the UFC, Fabricio Werdum has gone 2-0, with a unanimous decision victory over Roy Nelson and a submission victory last night against Frank Mir, he could face Cain Velasquez next, who is coming off a lost to Junior dos Santos, his first of his career.

Matches to make following UFC on Fuel TV 3

by Eric Stockton.

With UFC on Fuel TV 3: Poirier vs. Jung done, it’s time to look at matches to make after the event.

Charles Oliveira vs. Rani Yahya- Two of the best submission grapplers in the division, Oliveira and Yahya would be good fights for each other as they are currently stuck in a position where they are good enough to beat low level fighters, however when given a top level fighter they lose, so why not see who can make the next jump.

Josh Grispi vs. Cole Miller- Another two of the best submission grapplers, a bout between Grispi and Miller could be an exciting one as both look for submissions the whole fight.

Tom Lawlor vs. Clifford Starks- Being an exciting fighter in the UFC Lawlor has not been as successful as his personality and could be used as a test for up and coming fighters, like Starks who won his second UFC fight tonight.

Jason MacDonald vs. Winner of McGee/Miller- One of the best ground fighters in the middleweight division, MacDonald has been good or bad in his last few fights and could be used as a high-level gate keeper, however for right now he should be used as a contender and giving him the winner of McGee and Miller will help the UFC see who is ready to fight higher top level fighters.

Donald Cerrone vs. Anthony Pettis- Cerrone is one of the best lightweights in the UFC, however is currently not doing as good as he did last year. Having a good striking game and ground game, Cerrone is a dangerous threat against anyone in the UFC. A good opponent for Cerrone, who is as equally as dangerous, is Pettis who has a great striking game and an underrated ground game. With both fighters being from the WEC and being exciting, this fight should provide fireworks.

Yves Edwards vs. Jim Miller- Edwards has had mixed success as of lately, getting KO’d by Stout, then getting a TKO victory, then losing via unanimous decision to Tony Ferguson and now getting a submission victory over Cerrone. Another fighter in the UFC lightweight division has had a mixed of success as of lately, is Jim Miller who lost to Henderson, then beat Guillard and has now lost to Diaz, so a fight between the two fighters could be good.

Igor Pokrajac vs. Stanislav Nedkov- Stanislav Nedkov made a huge impression on everyone in his UFC debut, and since then has not fought, so why not have him fight Pokrajac who is a gate keeper at best and another eastern European fighter.

Thiago Silva vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira- Two of the best light heavyweight striker, Silva and Lil’ Nog can knock anyone out at any time and should these two fight, it would be a fight to see who can hit the harder shot first.

Dustin Poirier vs. Winner of Aldo/Hatsu- If Hatsu was unable to compete in the Brazil event, Jung was going to replace him, however Hatsu was able to compete so Jung then faced Poirier, with Poirier submitting Jung within the first round, so why not give this rapidly rising star a title shot after beating the number 2 contender.

Chan Sung Jung vs. Dennis Siver- Jung is a striker and can’t handle anyone on the ground that is good, so why not give Jung a fight with Siver that is sure to give fireworks from the moment the ref tells them to get it on to the last bell.

Matches to make following UFC 146

by Eric Stockton.

With UFC 146: dos Santos vs. Overeem done, it’s time to look at matches to make after the event.

George Roop vs. Eric Wisely- Eric Wisely is a rising prospect with an evolving game, however he could use a small step up in competition and that could come against George Roop who is a good all-around fighter, however he has a lot of holes and will not be getting a title shot soon, so a fight with a young prospect could help the UFC how well this prospect is.

Rousimar Palhares vs. Jason MacDonald- Palhares is one of the best BJJ fighters in the UFC, however he lost to Maia, in a fight that showed who was the better BJJ fighter. That fight could show that Palhares is not good with high-level BJJ guys, so a fight with MacDonald could help prove that or not.

Demian Maia vs. Loser of Silva/Sonnen- Maia has fought both of these guys before, beating Sonnen but losing horribly to Silva. So a fight between the loser of Silva and Sonnen could see who deserves to get a chance at another title shot and who doesn’t.

Jon Fitch vs. Martin Kampmann- Kampmann has been stuck at a spot in the welterweight division for a while now, doing enough to get a victory in some minds, yet loses or wins the fight. A fight with him and Fitch, who lost tonight could help bring one of these fighters back on track.

Nick Diaz vs. Josh Koscheck- Diaz was able to beat Fitch after his lost to Condit and should be given a fight with another top welterweight in Koscheck, and if these two were to fight we would have a war on our hands, inside and out of the octagon.

Junior dos Santos vs. Daniel Cormier- JDS lost to Overeem, Cormier lost to Barnett, why not have these two fighters meet.

Alistair Overeem vs. Josh Barnett- Winning the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix, gave Barnett a title shot against the winner of Overeem and JDS, with the winner being Overeem, so these two will be fighting next, unless there is an injury.
