IPW: A Friend In Need

The cell phone on the bedside table goes off. My eyes, weary, crack open. An old-fashioned alarm clock reads '2:03'. I wish I could say it was just after 2 in the afternoon. It's not. Didn't even want a cell phone. My daughter convinced me to join, what she calls, the 21st century. I fumble around for the phone, knocking the clock over in the process. The glass on its face shatters. Damn. Liked that clock. I get out a weary...

"Hello"

A voice, firm and confident, comes through.

"You awake?"

"I am now."

It's a familiar, gruff cadence, one I'd recognize even if I was crapping myself at a nursing home. A situation that's closer than I'd like to admit.

"How you been holding up?"

"Better than you. 'Course that's usually because I get 8 hours of sleep a night."

He laughs and coughs up a load of the brown stuff.

"Know why I'm calling?"

"It's two in the morning. You better have one hell of a reason."

Worn down muscles and arthritic bones respond well. I roll over on my back.

"I got an opportunity for ya."

"Not interested."

"Okay. Take it easy."

Damn. He knows me too well. Never been one to pass up a mystery. Even if it's probably b*******.

"Fine. What is it?"

"Finishing what the two of us started fifteen years ago."

He's lying. And he only lies when he's desperate. Doesn't happen often. I've read the press over the last year and a half. He's taken any and all steps to avoid a connection between his new gig and his old gig. Can't say I blame him.

"I thought you were done with DaVE."

"I am. This is different."

"Why me?"

It's a valid question. I used to work shows for 10,000 people up north. Now, it's a miracle if I'm backstage at an event that draws 1,000.

"I'll level with ya. Gil's done. He's still an investor. 49 percent.

"Who owns the other 51 percent?"

"Who do ya think?"

I think I know where this is going. I flip on the lamp next to my bed. Manufactured light fills the bedroom. The poorly healed joints and cramping muscles do what I tell them. I sit up. Wipe the sleep from my eyes.

"Here's the deal. Between handling the finances and sponsors and all the other s*** that goes into running a company, I can't put all my creative juices behind the product.

"Are you asking me to take the book?"

"Don't make me beg."

Even if I tried, he wouldn't.

"I'll want my say. Hell if I'm giving your power-hungry ass full reign. Just some basic ground rules. Nothing major. We'll work together."

"It's not like we've been talking over the past five years. You walked away. From everything."

"And now I'm back. If you don't want the job, just say so."

"I've got a job."

Not a particularly good one. Mainly making sure one of Sam's boys doesn't break somebody's neck in the ring. He's come close a couple of times.

"You want to hear it? I don't got many friends. Not even sure I'd consider you one. We were just two old men trying to lead a revolution. Guess I felt like we bonded. Now I'm saying I need your help."

F*** it. What's the difference between 1,000 and 100?

"Okay John, I'll take the book."

"Thanks Eric. I owe you one. See ya soon."

"Don't worry about it. What are friends for?"

An Explanation

So I'd figured I'd answer some of my own questions to kind of explain what this is, where it's going, and what I plan to do.

Why IPW?

Actually, I was wavering between a couple different promotions, one of which was a lucha company, until reading Eisen-verse's post in his new SWF dynasty. He commented on the majority of the dynasties he's wrriten had a gritty, underground feel, and that he wanted to branch out. While I respect the hell out of that, it's not for me. This IPW diary is a thematic continuation of my 2001 DaVE dynasty from TEW 2010. The two major players in this one were critical members of that dynasty and I saw an opportunity to tell a good story about friendship.

Who else do you plan to bring in?

Plans can always change and if somebody catches my eye, I'll gladly scoop them up, but part of the challenge for me is working with what I'm given. The massive budget of IPW certainly opens up some avenues that weren't available with DaVE. Plus, one of the reasons I chose IPW over other promotions (namely GSW) was the variety of the roster. GSW has rappers, hustlers, and monsters. IPW has that, but they have Kip Keenan who I'm envisioning as a Jack Swagger type and "Irish Warrior" Lug Phelan and the wonderfully named Deadly Deadshot.

What were your plans for GSW?

Not that anyone specifically cares about this, but the plan was for Ash Campbell to be named the head booker of GSW as a way to "eclipse" his father and finally step out of the shadows. While it certainly might be a stronger back story, their roster is just awful on so many levels.

How often do you plan to post?

As often as I can which could be every day or could be once a week. What I do know is this will be my last post until the first week of January as I'll be out of the country and not bringing my computer along for the ride. Time will move quickly since I'll be staging only one event per month, currently titled "IPW iNSANITY". Starting off at small size, I can't imagine that I'll gain a television show within the first two years, at least. Also, there's the possibility a new job might open up.

New job?

Yes, I like to start off with a small company and try to work my way up to TCW, SWF, NOTBPW, CGC, or an equivalent. I may jump to a larger regional company if it suits Mister Tyler. Friendship only goes so far after all.

Are Nemesis and Eric Tyler really friends?

Not in canon, meaning they don't have a determined relationship... however, they both joined DaVE around similar times after working for national or near-national companies. They are similar ages and, in my mind, have similar "no-nonsense" personalities. And, the two of them (along with my boy, Johnny Martin) were the primary reasons why DaVE became a cult phenomenon and won the East Coast War. It's only natural they would've struck up a friendship even if both men don't seem like the type to have any "close" friends.

So what's this really about?

How far will you go for a friend? I have one particular buddy who is a little insane and I've helped him out on numerous occasions. And it's also about working with other people. I've written several scripts with the aforementioned buddy and a co-worker. A big part of this diary is going to be capturing the back-and-forth of the joint creative process and I may use the assistant booker to simulate some of Nemesis' creative decisions.

Anyways, that's that for right now. Come back in about three weeks and I'll officially kick this thing off.

Love the story concept.

Welcome. Thanks for reading.

I was going to go through this in a separate post, but figured I'd let everybody know that this will be a story that has a beginning, middle, and end. Not that any diary goes on forever. The length will vary depending on how things shake out. Right now, I anticipate it going anywhere from 2-4 years of game time and have resolved to see the plot through to the end (unlike my DaVE diary which died a premature death).

There will be one more post before the show preview goes up. A prize will be awarded to contest winners, but I can't tell you what it is yet as the reveal will spoil a surprise in the first show.

Can't wait to get started.

A brisk, cold wind causes the hairs on my arms to stand at attention. Rain falls from the sky. This is Southern California for God's sake, not Pittsburgh. Where's the sunshine and girls in bikinis? I duck inside a four story stucco and cement building. The first bad news of the night awaits. Attached to the stainless steel door of the building's only elevator is the message 'Out of Order' hastily scrawled on a piece of notebook paper. In my hand is a separate scrap of paper. It reads '402'. I sigh and drag my weary body up four flights of stairs. The pain shoots into my joints with every agonizing step. It takes longer than it should, but soon I'm standing in front of '402'. Knock.

Who is it?

Eric. Let me in.

Heavy footsteps shuffle towards the door. It flings open and John, just as I remember, minus the fiery red mane that's now a darker gray, stands before me.

Why are you out of breath?

Elevator says out of order.

He grimaces.

Nah. I put that sign up.

Why?

So other people don't use it. I don't like to wait.

I can already tell this might be a long night. A stack of papers is spread out over the kitchen table. John, though, heads to the fridge.

Beer?

No thanks, I'm more of a wine guy.

An ice cold aluminum can lands in my hands. I crack open the top and take the first step. It's cheap stuff, but goes down well.

This is all the other stuff I was telling you about. The bills and sponsor agreements and posters. F****** pain in the ass, let me tell ya.

So, why am I here?

First, I wanted to thank you for helping me out. I could've done it alone, but the product would've been s***. Second, I wanted to go over some of my goals and let's call a spade, a spade... some rules.

Ahem. Number one. I don't want to lose any ground. Right now, TEW.com has us ranked 36th in the world as far as Importance goes. I understand we might have some hiccups at first, but hell if I'm going to hire you only to watch you kill this company. Keep us above 36th or I might just fire your ass.

Okay, this isn't as bad as I thought. Evolve or die, right?

The next three are minor things, mostly having to do with the guys on the roster. I don't want a bunch of thugs running around backstage. Anybody who has had problems with the law. Don't hire them. Guys like Fierce who I had to use to get this company off the ground. Once their contract is up, ditch 'em. Also, this isn't a damn retirement home. Cross anybody over the age of 45 off your list. And lastly, I don't what all this fuss about Mixed Martial Arts is, but I want to stay the hell away from it at all costs. Any guy who even looks like he might have some MMA training can go work for someone else.

Okay? Is that all you're gonna say all damn night? Eric Tyler, I remember, couldn't shut up.

The old man has no idea what I want to say. All these rules and goals, feels like I'm in high school again.

Fine, you want me to talk. I've already started busting my ass for you. Been scouting some of the independent shows in the area over the last month. Haven't seen anybody worth while in the ring, but I'd like to bring in a girl who could get some of our fans excited.

She's a looker. Not much else.

Fine. Send her a contract. As for our show in two weeks...

Agreed. I'll throw in some bonuses up front to sweeten the deal. It's up to them whether they want to stay or not. Plenty of guys aching for a gig on the independent circuit. The new contracts might throw a wrench in a big idea I had, but I think we can still make it work.

OOC: Post 1

Okay, so, apparently there was an issue with workers signing for a company you are at war with, but your extension offer still going through. It's been fixed with the new patch, but I had to re-start the save due to the 7 guys named in the post above working for both GSW and myself. Since I didn't want to arbitrarily decide who stays and who goes, some things in these initial posts will be edited. I'll make a note at the bottom of each post on what changed.

Okay, so, apparently there was an issue with workers signing for a company you are at war with, but your extension offer still going through. It's been fixed with the new patch, but I had to re-start the save due to the 7 guys named in the post above working for both GSW and myself. Since I didn't want to arbitrarily decide who stays and who goes, some things in these initial posts will be edited. I'll make a note at the bottom of each post on what changed.

That's bound to happen in the early moments of the game. That said, I'm glad it hasn't derailed you. I've quite enjoyed your conversations between Eric Tyler and the pseudo-bumbling idiot in Nemesis. Now, for all we've heard, Nemesis is somewhat of a genius creatively; however, that doesn't mean that he's all that intelligent in other means. ha. Very cool perspective.

As for Nemesis, I'd say pseudo-bumbling is accurate because while he may be a genius creatively, he learned his business sense from Phil Vibert, and I see them in much the same way. Tyler is there to be the logical half of the team.

Another aside, really enjoying your SWF dynasty so far. Vengeance is a scary mo-fo.

Thank you! The Vengeance "Demon" is easily my favorite person to write for right now. He just screams SE-magic.

As for Nemesis, I can totally see where you're coming from with this perspective. He worked hand-in-hand with Phil and that's probably why DaVE crumbled as it did. If Nemesis was really a genius (extending outside of the creative realm) then DaVE would have probably been saved by the Hardcore Icon before it fumbled. That said, it wasn't. He watched it all burn down just as Phil did.

Seeing how there's no negative relationship logged in the game (Phil and Nemesis) one would have to think that there was no contentious arguing between the two about the company's direction. Again, solidifying your perspective.

I'm really enjoying this though and will keep my eye out for new posts as they come along.

iNSANITY January 2013 Preview

This Saturday night it's going to be iNSANE in The Simmons Center because iNVINCIBLE Pro Wrestling is back! The main man himself says he'll have a huge announcement to kick off the show, one he promises will affect every man, woman, and child in IPW. What is it? Even we here at IPW.com have no idea.

The IPW Champion, Frantic Ali, will certainly be paying attention, especially since Nemesis has yet to name his opponent. We do know only three names are in contention for a shot at the gold: the mysterious, heroic Masked Stranger, behemoth Lil' Henry, and the IPW Californian Champion, Fiasco Fierce. Whichever one of these three starts gets the shot is sure to give Ali a fight he won't forget.

While the main event is still up in the air, we can announce several other matches taking place this weekend. The IPW Tag Team Championship will be on the line as the bizarre, freaky, possibly sinister team The Night Terrors will defend against the worst possible birthday surprise for a small child, those creepy clowns, Hellech and Pierrot, known as Coulrophobia.

The massive BB Colossus has been destroying anyone and anything in his path as of late, but can even the 425-pound mountain of a man survive two competitors at once? Colossus will certainly try as he takes on two of the younger wrestlers in IPW, "Ice Cold" Ray Snow and Stanley Axis. A victory over Colossus would cement the two men as future players in IPW, but they'll have a lot, literally, to deal with.

Gold will be in the sights of Hustle Muvva, Kip Keenan, and "Irish Warrior" Lug Phelan as the three men square off in a Triple Threat Match. The winner? They'll get a shot at Fiasco Fierce's IPW Californian Championship next month. You have to think the favorite is the more experienced Hustle Muvva, the only one of the three to hold a title here in IPW before, but we've learned before not to ever count out Keenan or the Irish Warrior.

And IPW fans, don't forget to send in your predictions for this month's show for a shot at a fabulous prize.
