In a great game that was on ESPN 2 Nationally, Washington continued to battle and fight and pulled out an emotional Overtime victory over the Wildcats on the Arizona homecoming game. Once again Johnson Albright played a fantastic game and is being mentioned in the National Awards for this season.

Coach Martin's comments- What a difference a week makes. The guys put in a great week of practices and it paid off in a big win. I don't want to take anything away from Cal last week but if we played like this maybe their would have been a different result. It sure would have been a more entertaining and fun game, that is to be sure. Now we are at 8-2 with upcoming games against NW rivals Oregon at home and then to Pullman to face the Cougs. I hope everyone liked this Tucson weather because I don't think we will see a day like this again the rest of the season.

Following the classic game in the desert last week, Washington came home to play a Duck team that was much better than its record. Both teams are alive in the Pac-12 Northern Division race and it showed on the field. In a game that went back and forth all night, Oregon scored on a 6 yard TD pass from Carlos Williams to Joseph Stevens with 19 seconds left in the game and the Ducks escape Seattle and probably save their season by a final score of 41-38. Tough game to lose for the Dawgs and it virtually has eliminated them from the Northern Division race since they have lost to both Oregon and Stanford.

Coach Martin Comments after the game - For the 2nd straight week you saw the most entertaining game in the country, this week Nationally on ESPN. This team left it all on the field tonight and what a heartbreaking loss. Both this game and the Stanford game, we are this close (small gap between fingers) of returning to the proud tradition of Washington football and bringing home a conference crown. We need some help to make the national playoffs but we 1st off need to take care of the Cougars and play that game. It is going to be a fight and they will be ready for us. If we don't make the playoffs we want the best bowl game possible to show off to the country how good this team is.

On the strength of freshman running back George Thompson the Huskies outlasted the Cougars in snowy Pullman, 23-20. After playing in a bizzard most of the 1st half, the game was tied at 3-3. The snow still came down in the 2nd half but let up a bit and the offenses showed more in the 2nd Half. The Huskies pulled out the game on a late TD drive and finished in a 3-way tie for the Pac-12 conference North title. Stanford will be the division representative based on its 2 wins against both Washington and Oregon.

Coach Martin's comments after the game - I believe I told everyone prior to this week not to overlook that football team. That was a great effort by the Cougars and we are fortunate to have escaped with our 9 victory on the season and a share of the division lead. Thompson was the "Georgedozer" tonight and we needed everything he had. 9 win season feels great, 10 would have felt better and so we will wait and see what our fate is.

Ohio State (7) vs. LSU (10)

We were so close to getting in, but I believe we were #2 in the last 2 knocked out. That Oregon game where we had a chance and Stanford too. But all is not lost for the Huskies.....

From: AD

Subject: Congrats, you're bowl bound!

We just found out we will be heading to a postseason bowl this year!

The Sun Bowl has extended us an invitation to take on Wake Forest during week 19.

So the Huskies are El Paso bound for the Sun Bowl and honest El Paso never looked so good for the coach of this program. We have a chance to end up with 10 wins in just our 2nd season and we are going to need that momentum so that we can really get a quality recruiting class for next season.

  • 2 weeks later...

It is time for Washington to return to the field and close out the 2nd season with our bowl game. I have been tied up a lot lately with travel and the holidays but am back to get the season done and begin work on studying the recruiting for the new year.

Coach Martin on KJR with Elise and Jerry.

Elise – Coach, what a great season you have had, again beating what the so called experts thought this team could do. You must be proud of the guys.

Coach Martin – Elise thanks we truly are very pleased with the effort that everyone put out on that field this year. Whether it was in games, in practice or during training, all of these guys no matter what their role had a significant hand in this team going 9-3 this year and tying for the North Division title.

Jerry
– Coach you were 9-3 this year and have a chance for a 10 victory. What would that mean for your program? I mean the school several years ago came off the 1st winless season in Husky history. What a turnaround you guys have done.

Coach Martin – It has been a very special year and we have been very fortunate this year with good health as well. While we are not satisfied in not winning the Pac-12 North and playing in the conference championship game against #1 USC, we are extremely excited about the future of Husky football. 10 wins is a magic number for a lot of people and generally it just means you had a pretty good season and are in the conversation at least for the conference and national playoffs. We were in both and we had a couple of close losses at home that if we win either of those games would probably be the difference in playing not only in the conference championship game but also the NCAA national playoffs. Those are both of our goals every year. But I am not going to take away from what we have done. We have an invite to go to the Sun Bowl in El Paso and play a very good Wake Forest team from the ACC. We have about 3 weeks to get ready for that game and I know Wake will be ready. We will be ready too and we are going to finish what we started.

Elise – Talk about your senior split end Johnson Albright. What kind of a kid is he?

Coach Martin – Oh Johnson has truly been a great success story. Talk about someone who really put it all together last year. I will be honest last season when he was academically ineligible Johnson came to me and discussed leaving the team. He was really frustrated but we talked and he decided to stick it out and when he came back he was immediately injured and that effected his play last year. Johnson did a lot of growing up this year and he truly did bond with the players and more important our offensive coaching staff. We worked with him on his academics and he committed to being the best student he can be. And as you can see he was eligible all season, not once on the watch list and he had an All-American sort of season. For him to receive the Biletnikoff Award as the nationals most outstanding wide receiver is truly a great honor. The kid worked his tail off both on the field and in the classroom and is what being a Husky is all about. I couldn’t be happier for Johnson, he truly deserved that recognition.

Jerry – That is two years in a row for your Husky team to have someone win an award like that. It truly speaks volumes about what you are trying to do here and it should be a great selling point for you while recruiting.

Coach Martin – No doubt it helps us continue to build the program out on the recruiting trail and these kids all of them should be excited to be a part of the Husky Football resurgence. It is a great honor and it just shows you that hard work and confidence will translate in this game. Both guys were very deserving and now that we have kind of started this trend I am eager to see who will step up next year.

Elise – Wouldn’t that be something if we could make it 3 in a row.

Coach Martin - That would be a huge accomplishment and while the individual awards are nice, we want the Pac-12 title. Nothing else will satisfy us as a coaching staff, University, students and fans. Our goal is to get back to what Washington football is all about and that is winning the conference, which I feel is the best in the country despite what some folks down south think. To do that, we are going to need to continue to compete and improve and continue to coach the kids that want to come to this program.

Jerry - Coach Wake Forest brings a talented group of players to your upcoming game. What are the keys to winning.

Coach Martin - Same keys that we have been working on all year for us and that is to not make turnovers on offense and on defense turn the ball over and capitalize on those turnovers. Wake Forest is going to be a big challenge for our defense as they have a solid offensive line and one of the elite running backs in the country in Andrew Jacobs. Jacobs has ran for over 1500 yards and he is going to be a key to stopping their offense. If we don't contain him it will allow them to keep our offense off the field and keep our passing game in check where I think we have an advantage.

Elise - The national playoffs start this week with 1st round games and then we have your bowl game against Wake Forest. Any thoughts on the national playoffs?

Coach Martin
- I wish we got in. But as far as picking a winner, I would have to say that USC looks like the cream of the crop this year. I would be surprised if they didn't win.

El Paso - A dominate defensive performance for the Huskies as they Wake Forest to under 300 yards for the and only 87 yards rushing on 32 carries. Player of the game for Washington was freshman running back George Thompson who ran for 103 yards on 23 carries and also caught 5 passes for 43 more yards. Thompson put the Huskies 1st TD of the game on the board in the 2nd quarter with a 12 yard run. Washington added a early 4th quarter TD on All American Johnson Albright's 79 yard catch and run to finish off the Deacons 27-6.

Defense for Washington though was really the stars of the game. The Huskies gave up 115 yards to star RB Andrew Jacobs on 19 carries, but when it came time to shut down Wake Forest the defense rose up and did the job holding Wake to 3-15 3rd down efficiency and 0-1 on 4th down. The Huskies sack Wake QB Matt Hoover 5 times in key situations and also intercepted 1 pass as well. George Westmoreland had 3 sacks for the Dawgs and OLB Robert Langford had 10 tackles on the day.

Coach Martin - What a great game we played on defense tonight. I can't be more pleased with how these kids prepared for this game and then came out and executed the game plan. Huge hats off to my coaching staff as well for studying our opponents and putting together a successful game plan in all 3 phases of the game. It is a great way for these seniors to go out having been on this team that has made so many strides. They have been a huge part in bringing back the pride in Washington football and it is incumbent on returning kids and the new recruits to continue on what these guys did and also to build on it further.

The 2014 season is completed and USC won the National title. The Huskies have 19 scholarships available right now for the upcoming season.

Here are the AD's evaluations

Team Performance A

Talent C

Recruiting D (only had 7 scholarships to offer last year but the class was only rated 92 based on those limited numbers.

Board Expectations A

Prestige A (moved from 45 to 49 to 56 now in our 2 seasons)

Overall B+

Expectations remain low at the school despite 2 bowl winning seasons and a 19-7 overall record. Now I will admit we are 10-0 outside the conference and except for the bowl games we have played a patsy schedule mainly at home. I will maybe up the schedule a little bit but we are still trying to create a winning atmosphere here. Our coaches are really going to have to step it up this year.

Hard to believe but the board just wants us to beat WSU and find a couple of wins. I have to admit I think this season will be tough because of the small class and the underclassmen I inherited are not very good. Hopefully we will recruit well, have a decent 8 win season (4-4 in conference or better).

As we roll the season forward here are the possible coaching vacancies that I have been offered.

10.) Texas State Bobcats

9.) Florida International Golden Panthers

8.) East Carolina Pirates

These 1st 3 were easy to decline. Texas State is a new program and I don't have interest in starting from the bottom there. The other 2 are East Coast schools and while we appreciate the offers we declined them as I prefer the West Coast.

7.) Army Black Knights

6.) Syracuse Orange

I did talk to Army and out of respect to our military I recommended a coach for them. Again Syracuse is on the East Coast as well and is a basketball school so my interest there wasn't there.

5.) Air Force Falcons

Again out of respect I did talk to the Air Force program but again I pointed them in a direction of a coach. I really think Coach Keating would be great for them but I would hate to lose him.

4.) UCLA Bruins

Well UCLA is a West Coast job but again a basketball school that doesn't even play its home games on campus. While the Rose Bowl is great for the grand-daddy game of them all, it is not what I want for a home field.

3.)Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

Now while not a prestigious program this one would give me pause. It is one of my favorite areas, but the Husky job is a "dream job" for me so I am staying put.

Now the next 2 opportunities gave me pause to consider.

2.) Miami Hurricanes

Now for Miami to want to hire me, that means my program is being taken notice of. Quite the honor but I declined the interview request.

1.) Florida State Seminoles

Of all the teams that offered me their head coaching job, this is one that I would have to consider, normally, but I have only been at Washington for 2 years and we have only started our program and not finished where we want yet. So while flattered I turned them down for an interview as well.

Our budget for the new year has been increased to by $55,000 and now our weekly recruiting budget is $85,500. Looks like I might be able to up our scouting back up since I reduced some things last year to get my Assistant Coaches in as we desperately needed to upgrade there last season. Unless they decide to leave for greener pastures, I am not going to make any coaching changes.

After reviewing our coaches I changed my mind and decided to review the potential ST coaches out there. Ronnie Yang had done an OK job but wasn't my coach but last year I had to deal with the OC and DC so I stuck with him. This year I decided to review the potential candidates at the same $150,000 salary level and if someone popped out I would make a change. Unfortunately for Ronnie a coach did catch my attention. The ST Coach at ULL made the same amount and was honestly head and shoulders above our guy, so we made an offer and the coach accepted. So we now have our new ST coach and his name is Corey Howard. Welcome aboard Coach Howard!

Quick update here. The players in bold accepted scholarships to Washington. I am very pleased that we got 4 of the 6 targets we went after. I will be studying the recruiting off and on over the weekend so there probably will be no more dynasty updates as I do that in between my daughters Nutcracker ballet this weekend and my volunteering at our church tree lightening/nativity programs this weekend.

We are at the transfer stage of the game now. Last year we went after 4 potential transfers and we got 2 very solid players in Blue chip RB Clarence Thomas (who will most likely replace all freshman player of the year in the Pac-12 George Thompson). And then we plucked up a huge offensive tackle in 6-6 318 pound David Adkins who will move right into the starting lineup this year.

So this year crop of potential transfers there are 6

Robert Rock QB currently at Kentucky 2.5/4.0 (Fr) (unfortunately QB Rock choose Kent State)

6-3, 211 lbs Work Ethic - 94, Int - 84 Interest - Very High

Don't think his accuracy will ever reach elite status, but he could become very solid in this area. Has the basic foundation to become a decent touch passer in the future. Won't ever have more than average arm strength. Hopefully, that will be enough. If he pushes himself, he could have above average scrambling skills.

James Johnson OLB currently at Texas Tech 2.5/3.5 (Fr) James Johnson accepted a scholarship at Washington

5-11 228 lbs Work Ethic 97 Interest - Very High

He was a good blitzer in high school and coaches see no reason why he can't reach that level here. Speed will eventually add a dimension to his game that few outside linebackers can match. As time passes and his body matures, he'll develop some very nice strength. With more time on the practice field, it is likely he will become an excellent coverage linebacker.

Danny Reid DE currently at Wisconsin 2.0/4.0 (So) Danny Reid accepted a scholarship to Washington

6-7 270 lbs Work Ethic 85 Interest - Very High

Continuing to develop his pass rush technique. He'll be a good pass rushing end down the road. Scouts project that he will become a sure handed tackler. As he lets his instincts take over, he will become a much more aggressive player. If he keeps working, he should end up with enough agility to compete at defensive end.

Charles Small CB currently at Wake Forest 2.0/3.5 (So) Charles Small accepted a scholarship to Washington

5-10 169 lbs Work Ethic - 80 Interest - Very High

Speed is a tool that will really help his overall game if he keeps working at it. As he continues to improve, his tackling ability will just add to his overall game. When fully developed, I look for him to be very reliable in zone coverage. His instincts for playing corner are never going to be very good and that will hinder his play.

Kelly Webb OG Currently at Florida State 2.5/4.0 (So) Kelly Webb accepted a scholarship to Washington

6-0 274 lbs Work Ethic - 92 Interest - Very High

Has good upside as a pass blocker and I expect him to develop nicely in this area. He has the basic foundation necessary to reach a level of agility most big guys can only dream about. When he learns to release his aggression on the field, he will be incredibly difficult to handle. This is a kid who should be able to bulk up in college and become pretty strong.

William Mosley ILB Currently at Iowa 2.5/3.5 (Fr) William didn't choose Washington as expected he went elsewhere and accepted the Cincinnati Bearcats offer.

6-0 234 lbs Work Ethic - 85 Interest - High

He's determined to keep working on his blitzing technique until he feels he is one of the best. He will eventually have better agility than most guys you see at linebacker. He is a physical specimen whose hard work in the weight room will eventually pay off in a big way. He's still learning, but coaches believe he will become an excellent pass defender.

As you can see Coach Martin likes players with high work ethic and of the 6 players being offered 5 are very highly interested in Washington with only Mosley being high interest.

Why can't we go all the way?! & upsetting to see my hometown Tigers couldn't repeat. & loving this dynasty.</div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Boise State had a real nice run to be sure but USC was really the dominate team from start to finish this season. Was kind of glad my guys didn't have to face them. Thanks for reading and your continued support as we move into the next season. </p><p> </p><p> Well after a 3 week break from the dynasty for the holiday's I am happy to report that Coach Martin will be back for the upcoming season. I have been reviewing some of the recruits and spending a little time on it but now we New Years I will begin to spend more time on it and we will probably work through the recruiting process by the weekend. </p><p> </p><p> Honestly I am expecting a tough season ahead because I have had a few kids leave due to graduation and it was the lower class men that I inherited that we not that great. Last year we only had 7 scholarships but we did have 2 transfers sit out that will be very welcome additions on the offensive side of the ball. I don't have a really quality QB though so I am going to have to land one in this class and they might get the starting nod if they are capable enough. I was really hoping to land QB Rock with this seasons transfer since he was very highly interested in Washington, but to have him go and choose Kent State over us was a huge letdown. Can't win them all but I need to land a fairly decent recruit, so I am really taking my time with this class.</p><p> </p><p> The defensive side of the ball really lacks talent so I think it is going to be a long season for my DC. Good thing he is fairly decent at development, and with training camp maybe we will improve enough to put a decent product on the field. </p><p> </p><p> Based on expectations we have over-achieved the first two seasons but expectations are low again this year and I hope that we can get to 7 wins and a bowl. We will probably schedule soft again, but we will see it might be a slight step up in non-conference games.</p><p> </p><p> Happy New Year to the GD community and <span style="color:DarkOrchid"><strong><span style="font-size:14px"><span style="font-size:24px"><span style="font-size:36px">GO DAWGS</span></span></span></strong></span></p>

<p>good job on the bowl win. Hate that the Trojans won it all - that should be your mission next year....to rain on their parade. In a year or so, you should be stealing a few of their prize recruits and making life miserable for them. </p><p>

Good choice turning down the offers -- you have a good gig and turning the Huskies into a powerhouse.</p><p> </p><p>

just a little curious why my ECU team was calling you? <img alt=";)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/wink.png.686f06e511ee1fbf6bdc7d82f6831e53.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

What happened to Coach Martin? I was excited to see this next season with the Dawgs and see how they do! Any chance of him returning? <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />
