A stacked card saw a highly anticipated Heavyweight contest turn into something of a damp squib, as veterans Raul Hughes (#7, 15-2) and Jeff Carlton (#11, 32-8) put on a poor performance that ended with a TKO victory for Carlton. In a third featured bout, Patrick Thomas (#20, 18-4) defeated Ashley Ballard (#21, 10-1) by Unanimous decision.

Other Notable news

GAMMA moved up to Mid Level National, spurring a rash of new signings.

Sunday 28th January saw the birth of a new MMA organisation. OMEGA Fighting Championships will take advantage of the newly-regulated Mexican scene. They will be based in Northern Mexico and will hold their fights in a ring, with rules heavily boxing-influenced.

>Official Result: 'Mighty Mouse' Heiko Pander defeats 'Violent' Vaclav Reitsma (TKO (Strikes) in 4:46 of round 2). The match was rated as being Good.

Comments: Good effort here by Pander – tight guard when he got taken down that kept himself safe, then made good use of getting a takedown himself to impose control and force the victory. Tough SIGMA debut for Reitsma, but he'll have to improve. He says he wants to face Benedikt Streit next, but that ain't happening as Streit's near a title shot.

>That has to go down as a 10-9 round to Pudil.

>Round three begins!

>Judging from what we heard from his corner, Papaioannou is looking to get the fight to the ground ASAP.

>Papaioannou steps back to avoid a left jab.

>A couple of ragged punches are used to set up a takedown attempt from a visibly tired Papaioannou.

>Papaioannou is stopped by a good sprawl, and is pulled down to the ground in a loose front facelock until he is on his knees.

>Pudil looks to unload with some big right hands, but Papaioannou gets back to his feet before too many land.

>Libor Pudil looks exhausted.

>Making 'The Destroyer' Libor Pudil the winner by unanimous decision!

>Official Result: 'The Destroyer' Libor Pudil defeats Stratos 'Atlas' Papaioannou (Unanimous Decision in 5:00 of round 3). The match was rated as being Average.

Comments: Hmmm, Pudil's good sprawl was extremely effective in stopping Papaioannou's takedown attempts, and he did enough in the stand up to get the decision here, without being particularly impressive. Papaioannou has dropped three straight now, and would be very vulnerable if his contract were due.

Comments: Smit shows he's good enough at this level without putting on a performance. I'm not convinced he has it at a higher level, but he may get the chance to test himself anyway. Gilchrist will need a win next time out and may have to face some of the newcomers

>Baskov sneaks a glance at his corner.

>Time slips away as Plasil doesn't press Baskov, allowing him to circle.

>Baskov swiftly avoids a barrage of big punches.

>Baskov keeps out of range, assessing the situation.

>Plasil seems to be waiting for Baskov to make a move.

>We are now at the halfway point of the round.

>Advancing, Plasil counters a left jab by using a solid left jab.

>Plasil goes to the body and then to the head with a tidy combination to get Baskov to cover up, then shoots in.

>He has the takedown! Baskov pulls guard.

>Baskov is controlled against the ground, unable to shift Plasil off of him.

>We're into the final minute of the round.

>Plasil is trying to pass guard.

>Baskov comfortably blocks the attempt and keeps Plasil in guard.

>Plasil leans back to avoid a couple of wild swings from Baskov.

>The time runs out and that round is over, and so is the fight.

>That has to go down as a 10-9 round to Plasil.

>Here come the official scores.

>All three judges give 30-27.

>Lubos Plasil wins by unanimous decision!

>Official Result: Lubos 'The Experiment' Plasil defeats Vladimir 'The Impaler' Baskov (Unanimous Decision in 5:00 of round 3). The match was rated as being Awful.

Comments: Well that was a mistake, putting these two in the Main Event. Plasil did what he had to to get the victory, but it wasn't pretty. Baskov seemingly had no answer to the takedowns or the ground control, and Plasil never looked like attempting to finish it from guard when he couldn't pass.

Show summary

Critical rating: Average

Commercial success: Average

Fight of the Night: Heiko Pander v Vaclav Reitsma

Knockout of the Night: Isaac Jacobsen

Submission of the Night: Faas Smit

Comments: We got away with that one a bit. The bad Main Event was partially compensated for by a couple of good openers, but leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Plasil had been tagged as a future championship contender, but on that evidence he needs to show me more.

The match was rated as being Fantastic.

Comments: Peragon makes a virtue of swinging for the fences and with his power and movement maybe he just deserves to be Champion for the sheer audacity of it. To be fair, I don't mind in the least if it's going to mean fights as exciting as this one. It almost tempts me to avoid putting a wrestler up against him!

Show summary

Critical rating: Great

Commercial success: Decent

Fight of the Night: Manish Khan v Fernando Peragon

Knockout of the Night: Fernando Peragon

Submission of the Night: Aleksander Ivanov

Comments: Good set of fights, topped by the main event. The belts are changing hands fairly regularly at the moment, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not, but when you get a fight like this one you can't really complain.

Prediction results

All three of you picked the same slate of winners, so a good result of 5/6 for all of you, with only Fernando Peragon fooling everyone (me included!)

Cumulative scores:

CageRage 73/103

Jingo 28/44

London 9/12

Injury report

The trainers haven't notified us of any injuries, which is always good to hear, but the athletic commission have imposed precautionary suspensions of 1 month on Koenraad Belien and Manish Khan, 2 months on Jean-Pierre Richelleau and Luka Hajek and a staggering 4 months on Stanislaw Lipnicki – which is interesting when he shipped no damage and was stopped via armbar that didn't result in any injury!

End of month finances

A profit of over $37k made this month. With the swathe of new contracts we had to issue (with commensurate demands for increased pay!), we're now paying around $50k per card out in fighter fees. Of course, some $20k of that now comes from the increased bonus payouts, which we definitely do not begrudge when we get main events like the last one.

SIGMA signings

We're raiding the UK again this month, and pick up the following fighters:

Gregory O'Hara (Lightweight), Jay Dorridge (Featherweight), Matthew Michael Kirby (Light-Heavyweight), and Ozzy Bintley (Heavyweight), all of whom look like they have a bright future.
