UFC Announces New Scheduling Format; New Announcing Crew!

The UFC has announced today that no longer will fight cards carry 8 or more preliminary fights, and no longer will Fight Pass air them. Instead, in an effort to drive Fight Pass subscriptions and increase fighter exposure, each month the UFC will be holding a UFC Fight Pass exclusive event where UFC fans can view fighters who would otherwise be relegated to the bottoms of the preliminaries battle it out in primetime. No event has yet been officially announced for the broadcast but Dana White has promised to reveal more details soon.

UFC Fight Pass has not yet taken off despite the large catalog of fights available on demand. With Invicta now hosting live events on the UFC network, the UFC has been hoping for a boost but sees this venture as a worthwhile endeavor.

White was quoted as saying,

"Look, these guys would be fighting each other at three o'clock in the freaking afternoon. No one is watching them, and they're working their asses off. Instead we gotta keep crew in the venue longer, Joe and Mike in the building and it's just a whole hassle. So why not give these guys a spotlight too? The prelims on Fox Sports 1 will stay, they'll just be cut to five fights or so. And instead of flying the prelim guys around the world we'll just load them onto a Fight Pass card."

The most exciting announcement about the Fight Pass news, a new announcing team. No Jon Anik and Brian Stann or Joe and Goldy. Instead the UFC decided to give other people a shot at the announcing duties, and both from rumor and line-up it would appear they are going to take an edgier tone. Former WWF/E play-by-play man Jim "JR" Ross will be taking over play-by-play duties after his successful MMA broadcasting debut with Chael Sonnen last month. Joining him are former UFC fighters Nate "Rock" Quarry and Don "The Predator" Frye.

"Why would I hire Jim Ross? The guy is a freaking legend. Are you kidding me, why wouldn't I hire Jim Ross? Awhile back the WWE tried to take our guy, well in the end we got theirs. Jim Ross is the man, he's respectful and motivated and he's good at his job. Nate is a super professional dude who enjoyed a solid career in the octagon so obviously we want him back and Don. Well, Don is a character. He's a funny guy, a good dude. His raspy voice is great and he's intelligent. He's got a big heart and knows a thing or two about this whole MMA deal. He fought his last bout in 2011 for cryin' out loud. I actually met him at an event earlier in the year and we were just kinda, shootin' the shit and I just kinda blurted out whether or not he'd ever considered commentary. He said, and I quote, "Why the **** not?" That was all I needed to hear, and when we started piecing this plan together later in the year I knew he had to be on board," White said to reporters unveiling plans for the event at the UFC 179 Press Conference.

<strong>Q&A With Rich "Ace" Franklin</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>How are thing Rich, how's life been since the last time you stepped in the cage?</strong></p><p>

Great. Been doing a lot of cool things with ONE FC and just been enjoying life. Not getting beat up, haha</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Well, why now then? Why the decision to come back for the last fight on your UFC contract?</strong></p><p>

I've been watching guys fight a lot, I've been keeping in shape and I just keep thinking, I still got it in me.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>So is this a real comeback? Are you making a run at Chris Weidman's belt?</strong></p><p>

Well, haha, I'm not so sure about that. One step at a time. I think I can still fight, at the highest level. I think I've still got it in me. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>So this isn't a one and done deal?</strong></p><p>

Well, we'll see. I haven't fought in some time, and I haven't trained for a fight in some time. Maybe I get out there and I really am over the hill and past it, but I'm not sure. I'm not committing to anything, for now this is the last fight of my UFC contract. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>What about Thales Leites, what's the thought on him and why him?</strong></p><p>

I contacted Dana and told him I wanted to fight. He asked if there was anyone in mind and I said no. He didn't ask, but eluded to the idea of kind of giving me a cake fight to walk into the sunset, I said no. I want to be in there in a real dog fight, I think I can win it. Thales, is a great dude. Met him way back. I'm excited for the bout.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Well the last time you were in the octagon, you got a dog fight that...not to be disrespectful, didn't go your way.</strong></p><p>

No, it didn't. Certainly. Cung Le is a bad bad man. And to be honest I wouldn't want to face him again. But, I think I can do better than I did last time out. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Any idea on camps or strategies?</strong></p><p>

Way too early for me to worry about strategy and stuff, I'm just now getting the gears in motion for camp. But Jorge Gurgel Team all the way baby. Not changing anything.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Well we wish you luck Rich, always great talking to you, any last words for the interview?</strong></p><p>

I intend on winning.</p>

<p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><img src=http://411mania.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/BEC-RAWLINGS-150x150.jpg> <img src=http://www.mmarising.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/tuf-20-episode-10-recap-jessica-penne-defeats-aisling-daly-150x150.jpg></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

<strong>Bec Rawlings Stuns Jessica Penne in the Opening Qualifier of TUF: A Champion Will Be Crowned</strong></p><p>

With a professional record of 11-2, Jessica Penne was one of the projected favorites to go all the way in the new season of The Ultimate Fighter. As the name would suggest, the UFC is introducing the new Women's Strawweight 115lbs division, the final two will fight for the championship as the co-main event of UFC 182. Coaches Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis will face off for the Lightweight Championship on the same card. </p><p> </p><p>

Not only is Jessica Penne's record impressive, especially in the brand new realm of women's mma, but she entered the competition ranked as the #1 Strawweight fighter in the world. As with every fighter on TUF, her first bout was a qualifier against Bec Rawlings. Rawlings, 5-3, is from the isle of Tasmania, south of Australia and came into the competition largely unknown. Largely expected to lose handily in the bout, Rawlings scraped out a unanimous decision by outwrestling Penne.</p><p> </p><p>

Rawlings won the two round exhibition by stifling top control after taking Penne to the ground multiple times. The victory only serves to prove how exciting this season is shaping up to be, and how competitive this Women's Strawweight division really is.</p>

<strong>Conor McGregor Shaking Things Up Ahead of UFC 179 Bout</strong></p><p>

Conor McGregor is eyeing a change as he approaches his UFC 179 co-main event with Rani Yahya. McGregor has departed his normal camp of SBG Ireland, to train with the kickboxing group, Golden Glory. Home to elite level kickboxers the dutch training camp is legendary in its kickboxing success. When asked why the change McGregor responded,</p><p> </p><p>

<em>"SBG is great, and I'll be back no doubts. But I think I wanted a change for this fight, ya know. It's a really ****in' big deal, yeah. Co-Main event against another dude on a major card? I want that belt and I'm gonna get it. To do that, I gotta beat Rani and badly. Gotta make a statement you know? Golden Glory is great. Semmy Schilt, Gökhan Saki these are legends in kickboxing. I'm already the best striker at 145, but I'm gonna be the best in the world. I wanna be able to knock out Cain Velasquez or somethin'. And these guys will help me do it. </em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em>

Rani, you're a good guy but I'ma kick ya damn head off."</em></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

(If anyone cares to comment, if you guys are diligently reading, do you prefer the left hand alignment or the center alignment? I think left hand may read cleaner for news stories.)</p>

<strong>The Ultimate Fighter Continues to Surprise</strong></p><p>

On the heels of Bec Rawlings upset of Jessica Penne, Kailin Curran defeats Tecia Torres. Tecia Torres entered the competition, 4-0, as the #4 Strawweight in the world after some key wins with the Invicta promotion. Kailin Curran came in 3-0 after wins with the 'Pacific Xtreme Combat' promotion, but nothing of note. Once again in a stunning turn of events during the qualifiers, Torres was eliminated by Curran. </p><p> </p><p>

In a stand-up war, that already has potential for fight of the season, both fighters won one of the first two round. Curran in the first and Torres winning the second. Curran pulled out the sudden death, third round and makes her way into the house. Surely the UFC is happy with the surprising amount of parity in the brand new Strawweight division, but it has to hurt not having the #1 and #4 Strawweight fighters in the world even make it into the TUF house</p>

<strong>Another Men's Division? Dana White Comments on Lack of Plans for Women's 125lb Weight Class with Quizzical Retort</strong></p><p>

During a press junket yesterday, Dana White was asked if he was considering adding a Women's Flyweight division between Women's Strawweight and Women's Bantamweight. Dana assertively declined. </p><p> </p><p>

<em>"Ya know, I don't think so. Women's MMA is still so young and developing, we've got the best girls on the planet already here. I'm not sure the talent pool is deep enough or that there's enough press interest in too many Women's divisions. I'm not trying to be sexist or anything here, these girls can fight. Hell I wouldn't wanna fight Ronda Rousey. But I'm just saying, we got the best women in the best two women's divisions on the planet, period. I don't think we need to add anymore." </em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em>

</em><em><strong>"But what about the superfight potential? Wouldn't it be too hard for a Strawweight fighter to come to Bantamweight and vice-versa?"</strong></em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em>

"We don't make weight class and administrative decisions with unforeseen superfights in mind. Cat Zingano and Ronda Rousey is a superfight by itself. And some of those girls can make those moves. We've had guys traverse multiple classes, I'm sure some of the girls can too. But like I said, they're two different divisions I'm not worried about superfights. I'd sooner add another men's division than a women's division."</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em>

</em><em><strong>"What do you mean by that?"</strong></em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em>

"What I said. I think we could benefit more from another men's division somewhere than a women's. I'm not interested in putting on freak shows. I'm not going to have 500lbs guys slug about for twenty minutes. Shooto's got a whole host of guys that fight at 115. I'm sure we have some that could make the cut. I'm not saying I'm adding a division, I'm not sure how we got here. Just saying if I was expanding somewhere, it'd be another men's class."</em></p><p> </p><p>

Dana says he isn't expanding, but you have to wonder if he hasn't been thinking about it.</p>

I'm definitely going to follow this closely, just started with the same mod a number of days ago. Some of our main events are the exact same so it'll be fun to compare. As for TUF, I actually created a new Womens Flyweight division for the hell of it and am using TUF to decide the first champion. Aisling Daly beat Jessica Penne in my first Strawweight title fight so interested in see if she can pull it off in your version on TUF too.

Rosholt out of UFC on Fight Pass 2 Bout, Replaced by Vitor Miranda

With around two months to go before his tussle with fellow heavyweight Ruan Potts, Jared Rosholt has been struck by appendicitis. Citing the need for recovery time and the loss of training time, Rosholt is pulling out of the bout due to injury. He will be replaced by Brazilian heavyweight Vitor Miranda. Miranda, a Muay Thai fighter, will be a decided stylistic change from the wrestling Rosholt for Ruan Potts.

When Potts was asked for his opinion on the switch he responded simple with, "I fight who they put in front of me."

Oh yeah? That's awesome. You should definitely post in here about what's happening with yours and how they're differing. I imported some of Tag's changes from his new MW update, like judges refs and announcers. It'll be cool to see who does what and where our matchmaking changes.

Loving the interviews, very nice touch

Yeah, I'm trying to update it as I go. As I advance days I see the news stories so I just kinda think some of them deserve their own write-up. Others are fun, like explaining why Rich Franklin is fighting again. Because he's on my roster would be a cruddy reason, haha

First Knockout of the TUF Season Sees Alex Chambers Move on at Carla Esparza's Expense

In a lopsided battle, Alex Chambers makes a splash on The Ultimate Fighter. Carla Esparza tried to wrestle the 36 year old Australian, but Chambers was able to stuff her every advance. Through the first round and a half Esparza was a dramatic 0-for-6 on takedown attempts. Midway through round two Chambers attempted to push the pace, after stuffing an Esparza takedown the two met in the center of the octagon and a stiff right straight sent Esparza out cold. The win marks the first knockout of the season and sends Chambers through.

Hester Out; Magalhaes In

Clint Hester broke two fingers in his left hand during a sparring exercise in preparation for his UFC on Fight Pass 3 bout with Ed Gordon. As a result Hester will be replaced by fellow middleweight Caio Magalhaes. Known for his submission prowess, Magalhaes is coming off a TKO victory over Luke Zachrich. Magalhaes will be looking for his fourth consecutive octagon victory, while Gordon looks to add win number two to his squeaky clean octagon record.

Not that it necessarily matters but holy must the MW ratings for females be just terrible. Every one of those women fights on TUF so far has been so unrealistic!

Agreed, but it's the way the cookie crumbles I suppose. After TUF I'll go back and play with some of their attributes. Try to get them a little closer to real life.

Edit: For what it's worth, Aisling Daly just subbed Angela Magana

BREAKING NEWS: UFC Announce Signing of Former WWE Champion CM Punk

In what could be seen as the shock of the MMA year, Phil "CM Punk" Brooks has signed with the UFC. The former WWE superstar has previously expressed interest in trying MMA since his WWE contract ran out, but not many assumed those comments were serious. Even less would have assumed he'd be plying his new trade in the UFC. The news has caused quite a stir in the MMA world as several members of the mixed martial arts community have taken to social media to voice their opinions.

Many are questioning the decision to sign Brooks, who has confirmed he will use his moniker CM Punk for his promotions and his fights much in the same way Kimbo Slice was billed. Most have taken issue with the UFC's decision to sign an amateur with no fights or history of fighting experience and who has no "legitimate" athletic background. Punk has allegedly been training in BJJ for several years during his down time from professional wrestling, but at this time it is unclear as to what level of proficiency he attains. With fighters like Ben Askren still on the outside looking in, the roster seems divided over the decision to bring CM Punk into the fold.

Not all are so upset however. Some member of the community have voiced their support, excitement and desire to fight CM Punk. It seems to be universally understood that the UFC signed CM Punk to boost falling PPV numbers by acquiring a man who's fame with pro wrestling fans promises to bring a new audience to the UFC. While some fighters have no issue with that, others seem to be quite upset. It will certainly lead to interesting discussions moving forward. What we do know is that CM Punk will debut sometime in 2015, he is not yet sure with what camp he will be training nor is he certain of his weight class. He plans on making a few test cuts, but will likely compete at 185.

Below are the thoughts of various mixed martial artists about the signing,

The hype will only build while CM Punk prepares for his UFC and MMA debut. Certainly the media hype won't die down. Still to come, Dana White said that Punk's first bout would be against someone with similar cage experience. Someone else who is 0-0, 1-0 or 2-0. Now the speculation about CM Punk's first opponent begins.

I don't know how much stats have been changed since modern warriors 15 for WMMA3 but she was literally unbeatable in that mod (Aisling Daly I mean). Like I said, not that it matters that much, the game won't be perfect but just thought it was worth pointing out. Good job on the dynasty! loving the interviews

<img src=http://i.imgur.com/ORZ8rcK.jpg></p><p>

<strong>Round 1</strong></p><p>

A back and forth stand-up battle sees the smaller Tom Lawlor effectively close range and bully Hans Stringer. </p><p>

10-9 Lawlor</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 2</strong></p><p>

A gruesome round two for Stringer, he was able to land some early but around the 4 minute mark he was tagged by a huge left hook. Staggering backward, Lawlor nabs him in a Muay Thai plum. Showering him with knees to the ribs and a couple slicing elbows, Stringer finally gets free near the round's end. </p><p>

20-18 Lawlor</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 3</strong></p><p>

Literally, the exact same thing that happened in round two.</p><p>

<img src=http://i.imgur.com/PQgAr09.jpg></p><p>

<strong>Round 1</strong></p><p>

A stand-up war! The fans are on their feet! They love it. Hall and Philippou clashed several times resulting in wild displays of boxing and kick boxing prowess. Hall snapped off a few kicks and landed a little more, but ultimately Philippou landed 5 power punches in the round to Hall's 1. </p><p>

10-9 Philippou</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 2</strong></p><p>

Similar to the first round, the two go right back at it. Center cage, they brawl. Uriah Hall is landing more efficiently, and seems to be getting the better of Philippou through the halfway point. BOOM! A stiff right sends Hall to the mat and Philippou rains down haymakers. Hall is shaking off Philippou enough that most miss and eventually suckers him into Side Control. Hall sweeps and ends up in Costa's halfguard but that's where the round will end. </p><p>

20-18 Philippou</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 3</strong></p><p>

Hall circles on the outside, afraid of Philippou's power. Costa stalks his pray but Hall stays out of range. The fans begin to boo as 2 1/2 minutes in and Hall is on his horse. Hall needs a knockout, he needs to engage! He must've heard me because he does but he's gonna regret the advice. A thumping right hook to the body sends Hall backpedalling but a second right hand to the jaw sends him down again. Philippou starts dropping hammers but is unable to end the fight before the bell.</p><p>

30-26 Philippou</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 1</strong></p><p>

Well, shit. Browne must have had somewhere to be. Schaub comes out and immediately attempts a takedown, Browne stuffs it. Schaub rises from the sprawl attempts a jab that falls short and Browne nails him with a right cross. Light's out Schaub. </p><p> </p><p>

Travis Browne mysteriously calls out Mark Hunt for a title-eliminator </p><p> </p><p>

<img src=http://i.imgur.com/eOs7KLW.jpg></p><p>

<strong>Round 1</strong></p><p>

They meet in the center, McGregor is a spitfire! Conor is pushing the pace. Yahya is trying hard to vary levels but he is on his backfoot. McGregor hits a left head kick that stuns Yahya! Yahya counters with a stiff right that appears to slightly wobble McGregor. McGregor seems to have woken up and is slowing his strikes. Yahya feints left AND OH MY GOD! KNOCKOUT OF THE CENTURY! McGregor leaps into the air to hit a spinning roundhouse and out goes Yahya! I'm not sure he's conscious! His teeth may be in orbit. The Golden Glory training must have paid off. </p><p> </p><p>

McGregor thanks Golden Glory at least three times in his Post-Fight interview, clearly enamored with his performance. The guys is a machine. He interestingly calls out Chad Mendes, saying it'd be a great fight. Wondering why he didn't ask for the belt?</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 1</strong></p><p>

Well gawd damn! Hope you weren't interested in a lengthy main card. The second Lawler of the main card roars out to Hendricks but doesn't land anything. Hendricks keeps his composure, they trade some blows. They meet again and blam-O. A fiery left uppercut sits Robbie Lawler on his ass. Johny Hendricks makes his first title defense and ends the debate.</p><p> </p><p>
