TEW2013 on a tablet

Recommended Posts

I've long been a fan of TEW but in recent years find myself spending less of my free time sat at my pc or on my laptop, therefore I have had less opportunity to play TEW. I've got an Android tab and can't play TEW on it, I've got a Surface RT and can't play TEW on it. I could play it on a Surface Pro but I don't have a spare grand laying around.

I was starting to think I would never be able to play TEW on the go...then I stumbled across the Linx (yes Linx, not Linux) range of Windows tablets. They run full Windows at a fraction of the price. There is a 7, 8 and 10.1. I went for the 7 as a tester to see if the hardware is any good and could run software such as Scrivener, Final Draft and TEW before I went for the 10.1.

The Linx 7 set me back £50 and it is an absolute dream. It's not the most powerful tablet in the world but to have full Windows and all the software I need in my pocket for £50 is amazing. TEW even works, admittedly not as fast as my PC runs it but if you don't use bloated databases then it runs just fine and having the ability to play it when I am travelling or even whilst on the throne means I'm willing to settle for it not running at warp speed.

The manufacturers have done a great job, using budget crap for things like the camera to ensure they can use the good stuff for the necessary parts of the tablet.

If you have any questions I'll answer the best I can.

So does TEW only work on this LINX tablet? or any tablet running windows.

It should work on any tablet running full Windows, not Windows RT. The problem until recently is that Windows tablets have never been particularly affordable.

The touch interface is good enough, it's not amazing but I don't have any problems with it. When doing stuff that isn't touch optimised such as TEW or Final Draft, etc I'll use a stylus.

I can't seem to find any US stores(online or brick n mortar) that sell Linx products.

I checked out the UK Amazon to see how much it'd be if I bought a 10 inch one from the UK and it'd be around $250.

I found this link while browsing alternative Windows tablets and prices jump all over the place for these things. $250 doesn't seem too bad compared to the ones in this article.

I just got an HP stream and thought id try TEW on it. Unfortunately something about the display isn't right. Its squashed and you have to imagine where the button should be to press it as pressing where its displayed does nothing.

Maybe someone with knowledge of advances settings and resolutions would be able to correct the issues but how it comes isn't really playable

If someone could figure this out, it would be great since there's deal going on now that lets you buy this tablet for $80 or as low as $75.

Good news!

Played around with display settings and changing the display from 125% to 100% made it work fine. All the buttons in the right place. Due to the size of the screen, i'd reccomend playing with a stylus but definately seems to be working fine on Stream 7 now after changing to 100% :)

Stumbled upon a couple of Lenovo IdeaTab Lynx, tablets also capable of running the full Windows environment, on Amazon. Worth checking out, I'll be sure to save up and buy one for myself in the future to play TEW and other sims on the go.

Just an update for you all. I'm now 2 years into a game and it's still going strong, had no issues at all. Took a few days to get used to the most efficient way to navigate where touch didn't work too well, such as with drop down lists where I'll quickly open up the on screen keyboard rather than trying to use touch gestures. I'm now able to book a 3 hour show in just a couple of minutes.

I can't stress enough how great it is to have TEW on a tablet. I was at the point where I hadn't played for so long and wouldn't consider buying any future games from GDS because I just don't spend the time at my pc that I used to. Now though I can play TEW whilst watching the Network, play TEW lying in bed, or anywhere and any time that I want. If it sounds like I have a hard-on for TEW on a tablet then it is because I do!

Does the tablet come with a stylus?

Getting a small inexpensive tablet is something I've mulled for a while. The Linx isn't available here, but the previously mentioned HP Stream 7 tablet is pretty inexpensive. Its only 7 inches which is pretty tiny, but the screen resolution should be sufficient to run TEW. And going up 1 inch in screen size is a $50 price increase. Think I'll order the tablet tonight and hopefully be playing FM on it by next week.

Today is the day I'm supposed to receive my HP Stream 7 after placing the order last week. Just wondering though from those that have experienced TEW on their tablets, is it still enjoyable without a bluetooth/docked keyboard? I was planning on purchasing a stylus as something told me that would be a must and a mouse wouldn't be necessary, but what about an external keyboard?

You will need a stylus but nothing else is really needed. I will say that I am sending mine back.Every device in my house connects to the internet except my Stream 7, and I am not the only person who has the problem. I will connect for 30 or so minutes, disconnect, and you have tor eset your internet to connect it.

Haven't ran into any problems so far with my HP Stream 7 so far, yet to run into any problems with the wi-fi after being connected for several hours and after tinkering with the display settings I can play TEW and other sims like a dream <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />. I rarely ever shop online for electronics, but I'm glad I did this time; easily one of my best purchases yet. Now I just need some dramanine to deal with my motion sickness on the go lol <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

It is awesome that you found this to work well. I am going to snag one up b/c ever since I got my iPad this is the reason I don't play much. However, now being able to play anywhere anytime I think this will be a solid purchase. To download it do you just navigate to the web and download like a normal PC? I would thne need to deactivate my version on my PC, right?

You're on the money, you can download and install TEW on the tablet just like you would on your PC, after deactivating your license of course.

<p>Ok so im basically a noob when it comes to these tablets cuz im old school pc guy, but this sounds very interesting so i have some questions, that to me sound stupid but ill ask because it may help someone else too.</p><p> </p><p>

1. You said i can download the game like a pc and deactivate the license from pc version. I have never done this before so would i need the original email with the authorization code that i got when i first purchased the game?</p><p>

2. Im assuming dropbox is accessible on the tablets? that way i can quickly move my databases and saved games to the new device.</p><p>

3. Has anyone tried Wmma 3 or 4 on the tablets? If i choose to go the tablet route i would also wanna move those games over too. </p><p> </p><p>

Thanks for teaching an old dog new tricks <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

You can deactivate your game on your PC by right-clicking "Start" or the Windows button at the bottom left of the screen. Select "Run" and click "Browse" once the window pops up and find the TEW exe file. After finding it just select it and click "Open". At the end of the address line in the "Run" window add " -unlicense" without quotations and click "OK" to open the deactivation window. The rest is pretty straightforward, just deactivate the license so you can activate it on the tablet. Your key is shown on the deactivating screen in case you lose access to your email, just copy and save it somewhere safe.</p><p> </p><p> 2. Yep, this tablet fully emulates Windows 8.1, you'll be able to access it just like your PC.</p><p> </p><p> 3. Haven't tried yet, but I could install and run the demo to find out. **UPDATE** Tried it and everything runs great, you'll be good to go if you ever decide to make the switch.</p>

<p>This thead inspired me to pick up one of the HP Stream 7s. I loaded the TEW 2013 demo onto it and it works fine. A bits low compared to my laptop but nothing unplayable, at least no the default data. I have my doubts I would play it much on there. The tablet is more convenient than my laptop, but not quite enough to make me prefer it given the size difference.</p><p> </p><p>

Edit - for anyone considering this, I'm pretty sure it has to be a Windows based tablet. An Android based one is more like an iPad in that it uses apps designed for it and doesn't have Windows to run the GDS game.</p>
