G1 Climax 25 Block B

Yuji Nagata (4) vs. Tomohiro Ishii (2)

A decent match to start the show but perhaps too short and lacking in the energy needed to get a crowd warmed up. Ishii picked up the victory, hitting a Sliding Lariat and then a Vertical Drop Brainbuster.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Kota Ibushi (4) vs. Shelton X Benjamin (2)

This is more like it! A fantastic fast-paced match between two extremely athletic competitors here, both of whom have previous. But Ibushi shuts down the rivalry for good after a Phoenix Splash.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Alberto El Patron (6) vs. Bad Luck Fale (4)

Alberto dissects the arms of "The Underboss" throughout this match, well and truly cutting him off from going for any of his signature moves. Fale attempts the Bad Luck Fall, but his right arm gives out on him. This allows El Patron to slap on a Cross Armbreaker and pick up the submission win.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Roderick Strong (2) vs. Hirooki Goto (8)

Another superb match to Strong's resume. But Goto isn't letting anything stop him just yet, he's emerged as a real dark horse favourite for the block. Despite Strong's best efforts, he falls to a frustrating defeat again after a Shouten Kai.

Match Time: 10:50

Rating: 84 (B+)

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Katsuyori Shibata (4) vs. Satoshi Kojima (4)

As his best friend has excelled to 10 points, Shibata stands on a miserable 4. Seeing Goto defeat Strong awakened a beast in Shibata and his determination was just too much for Kojima to contain. Shibata hits a Go 2 Sleep, then takes home the W after a stiff Penalty Kick.

Match Time: 10:54

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Samoa Joe (6) vs. Naomichi Marufuji (6)

Having picked up a huge victory over Okada yesterday, one could have expected complacency from Marufuji. But that's not the case, his years of experience coming into play as he elects to try his hand at mat wrestling instead of looking to out-strike the "Samoan Submission Machine". Joe still dominates most of the match out of sheer power but Marufuji's superior conditioning surfaces and he puts Joe down for the count after a Bicycle High Knee and a Shiranui.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Shinsuke Nakamura (7) vs. Minoru Suzuki (4)

A barnburner of a match between two well-rounded technicians, both of whom that sport off-the-charts charisma. This feels like a big match from the get-go, the atmosphere noticeably more active after both men make their entrances. Suzuki controls most of the match, keeping Nakamura grounded with a variety of leg and arm locks. But the "King Of Strong Style" does it yet again, fighting back with kicks and knee strikes to turn the tide. Suzuki nearly hits the Saka Atoshi but Nakamura lands on his feet after the Judo throw and knocks Suzuki silly with a BOMA YE~! A second knee strike to the face later and Shinsuke keeps rolling.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

AJ Styles (8) vs. Tomoaki Honma (0)

Having suffered 15 G1 Climax defeats in a row, the odds were certainly not in Honma's favour tonight. That said, he did put up one hell of a fight and had many fans believing that maybe, just maybe, tonight was his night. He even notched up an impressive Kokeshi count of 4 out of 6. But the sixth and final Headbutt iteration cost him the match, a Diving Kokeshi from the top rope that only found AJ Styles' raised feet. "The Phenomenal One" then hoisted him up from the canvas into the Styles Clash position and planted Honma on his stomach for a 16th consecutive G1 Climax defeat.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Tetsuya Naito (7) vs. Togi Makabe (4)

An instant classic and one of the best that will happen anywhere this year. Hiroshima was graced by magic. This match had it all, a sweet compound of physicality, technical know how, drama and excitement. Makabe and Naito had the crowd in the palm of their hands, exciting them with a lightning quick pace that saw the "Stardust Genius" throw a Dropkick with such reckless abandon that he landed on the back of his own head. But such was the price that Naito was willing to pay for victory. Perspiration flew off the skin with every strike; chops, forearm strikes, dropkicks, Enzuigiri's and an occasional lariat elevated the intensity of this clash to another level. Perhaps against the script, it was Makabe that was recieving a real beating as Naito's vicious side reared its ugly head. He became the underdog as Naito folded him up with a German Suplex first and then a picture-perfect Dragon Suplex that had the crowd in a fever pitch when Makabe just managed to slip his shoulder up at 2.999.

Gloria connecting, Naito was preparing the closing note. He climbed to the top rope, leaping off with the Stardust Press only for Makabe to raise his knees in the nick of time. Naito was feeling the excruciating pain he had put Tanahashi through, not that Makabe cared. He rose to his feet, charging to the ropes just to decimate the IWGP Heavyweight Champion with a sickening King Kong Lariat. Naito looked like a car crash victim but somehow when Makabe covered him, he had enough still left in the tank to slip a shoulder up before the three. The "Unchained King Kong" was beside himself, contesting the count because he was sure he had won the match there. Deciding that a second Lariat would be enough, Makabe rebounded off the ropes but Naito ducked underneath and hit Ultima before his opponent could even react! He could have pinned him there and then but Naito climbed to the top rope. This kind of behaviour was out of character but Naito flew off and connected clean with the Stardust Press, cradling Makabe's legs as he enjoyed every bit of the one, the two and the three.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Hiroshi Tanahashi (4) vs. Kazuchika Okada (6)

Wow, well... Follow that.

Naito and Makabe had stolen the show but Tanahashi and Okada was the main event and these two great rivals added another classic to their storied rivalry. Starting with a slow pace, Okada asserted his confidence as he backed Tana up and slapped him on the chest. This was not the Tokyo Dome, Okada had no demons to conquer here! Tanahashi singled out the Rainmaker-delivering right arm, looking like an old pro as he tweaked the limb back and forth and gave Okada a series of a European Uppercuts to the elbow. Echoing back to their Wrestle Kingdom 9 clash earlier in the year, the IWGP Intercontinental Champion adopts the same strategy of going after Tana's mid section with a Backbreaker followed by an Eddie Guerrero-esque Hilo. But this was only the tip of the iceberg as Tanahashi pulled out the Dragon Screw Leg Whip and then took to destroying Okada's right leg. Lifting it up just to drop an elbow on the quadricep muscle, Tanahashi hooked on a leg bar and started tugging on Okada's knee pads. Exposing the bone, Tanahashi started delivering punches to the knee, the fans boo'ing the apparent lack of sportsmanship. But Tanahashi was a different man entirely in the presence of Okada, these two men simply do not like each other.

And it's entirely because even in the face of adversity, Okada cannot help but be egotistical. Even with pain shooting through his right leg and right arm, he throws European Uppercuts with the right arm. Screaming in pain with each blow, Tanahashi waits it out, content to let Okada find out just how damaged that arm is. "The Rainmaker" slumps to one knee after throwing around ten Uppercuts, Tanahashi adding insult to injury by taking the right arm and giving it a Dragon Screw Arm Whip to the hard canvas below. One would assume that Okada's confidence would have been shattered but he comes back with a Flapjack, his right arm holding out just long enough. Then he hoists Tanahashi onto his shoulders to hit Heavy Rain. He takes off his left elbow pad, switching to his right arm. After a Scoop Slam, Okada ascends to the top rope and dives off to slam a beautiful Diving Elbow Drop into his greatest rival's heart. The pad provided some protection but Okada can only do the Rainmaker Pose with his left arm. Tanahashi knows the feeling of having his tights pulled, his right arm grabbed from behind as he's swiveled around. Of course he ducks the first Rainmaker, how could he not? German Suplex from the "Ace" gets a two count. The adrenaline is flowing so Okada is back to his feet pronto, but a Dropkick to the Knee knocks him down. Tanahashi rebounds off the ropes to.. Too Awesome Dropkick from Okada! How does he do it? Quickly following up, Okada applies a Kneeling Cross-Legged STF or at least tries to. Tanahashi uses all his neck and shoulder muscles to learn forward and stop Okada from reaching and bending back his head. All the while inching towards the ropes, Tanahashi fights the Red Ink with all his might... and grasps the bottom rope with his left arm before Okada can even apply the hold!

This angers the young prodigy, his response is to pull Tanahashi to his feet and hoist him over his back for the Reverse Neckbreaker... but Tanahashi slips down his back with a Sunset Flip Roll-up. Only two but Tana is back up first and sprints round his climbing opponent. Okada turns around just in time to eat the Sling Blade! Tanahashi climbs up top and steadies himself... High Fly Flow! To canvas! Okada had rolled out the way and now he crawls to the ropes, climbing to a vertical base just as Tana begins to stir. Okada lets out a battle cry and forcefully pulls Tana to his feet by his hair. From the Gutwrench position, Okada gets the shorter Tanahashi in position and executes a devastating Tombstone Piledriver! Time for another Rainmaker Lariat... Okada tugs Tanahashi to his feet, grabs the right arm from behind with his left arm... turns him around... but Tana ducks under the Lariat and counters with the Sling Blade!!! The "Once In A Century Talent" races to the top turnbuckle - High Fly Flow! CONNECTS! Tana hooks the leg, grimacing in desperation as the fans assist Red Shoes Unno in counting to three.

As is customary, the post-match ceremony begins. For the first couple of minutes post-match, both Tanahashi and Okada require immediate attention. Young lions Yohei Komatsu and Sho Tanaka sport a water bottle and a cold towel for Tana whereas YOSHI-HASHI and Gedo see to "The Rainmaker" and tape an ice pack to his injured right arm. Okada is once again a broken man, two defeats in two days. He wheels off and sniffs violently so as to hold back tears and avoid further shame. His head bowed as Gedo and YOSHI-HASHI escort him down the exit lane, the former turns towards the ring and shouts something with vengeance in Tanahashi's direction. Not that Tana hears him, he's too busy air guitaring and posing victoriously on the top rope.

Once Tanahashi begins to talk, it appears that this victory may have overwhelmed him. Normally a composed individual at the wildest of times, Tanahashi slips over his words and seems to have no idea what to say. He blurts the first things that come to mind, appearing almost villainous in his enjoyment of Okada's crestfallen post-match state. Tanahashi promises he will win his remaining matches and make a late push to advance from the block, starting with Goto next week. But one wonders if Tanahashi will be hungover when that day comes, for victory over Okada tonight may be the magnum opus of his G1 Climax 25 adventure...

I don't know how it scored 100, I really don't. In my write-up I just went with it being magic, which is all I can think of...

With regards Tana beating Okada - it was one I went back and forth on. I'm still keeping the Okada needing to beat him at Tokyo Dome narrative alive but I thought him winning here kind of would have taken the heat away from it?

Why not a draw then? It keeps the heat alive, especially if Okada can't finish Tanahashi. Easy title match for Wrestle Kingdom, while Nakamura/Naito tie up for a second time after their big draw.

My expectations so far:

Wrestle Kingdom 2016

1. IWGP Intercontinental - Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada ©

2. IWGP Heavyweight - Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Tetsuya Naito ©

3. Special Singles - AJ Styles vs. Naomichi Marufuji

4. Special Singles - Kota Ibushi vs. Minoru Suzuki

5. NEVER Openweight (champion unknown) - Samoa Joe vs. Tomohiro Ishii

6. IWGP Tag Team (champion unknown) - Guns & Gallows vs. Meiyu Tag vs. Great Bash Heel vs. Killer Elite Squad

By the way, have you considered running a couple of one-off SZKG shows like they did in IRL? Be funny to see a show here like they one they did last year.
