2007 Benoit Prelude Mod Update

Recommended Posts

I'd like to apologise for my absence from the forums - the last few months I've had some major unforeseen personal problems pop up that have prevented me from contributing or working on the mod.

The other thread is now closed and while I don't know all the details, I'm aware that I was on the receiving end of a bit of hate and frustration. I understand the frustration but sometimes we need to take a step back and think about the fact that not having an update from someone working on making a mod for a game isn't really something to get worked up over. I hope that there isn't any drama and we can stay as the great community I remember.

Do not worry, however, for the mod is not dead! I have recently started to work on it again. I have learned my lesson not to state a release date due to any number of things happening between now and then however my personal aim is a playable beta by Nov/Dec.

For those who've taken the time to PM me, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the kind words. I'll try to post an update every fortnight or at least once a month on progress.

On June 25th, 2007 news of Daniel, Nancy and Chris Benoit's deaths shocked the wrestling world. As the details surrounding the double murder-suicide became clearer over the coming days the wrestling world was put into the public spotlight. Rumours of steroid abuse were running rampant and there was speculation about what role steroids played in the death. This event caused the wrestling industry in North America to hit it's lowest point in decades and the large amount drug abuse in wrestling to be exposed.

This mod starts in June 2007, a month before the Benoit tragedy. Narratives have been set up in the mod to simulate the happenings and the aftermath of the murder-suicide, however, if you want to play an alternate timeline simply delete these narratives.

The mod is intended to simulate the prelude to and the aftermath of the Benoit tragedy on the United States wrestling scene and thus will focus solely on promotions from the US of A. Initial beta releases will include WWE, TNA, ROH, FCW and OVW. As the mod develops and goes out of beta, other independent promotions will be added.

Current Progress

WWE (95% Complete)

FCW (10% Complete) NB: Whilst FCW didn't run their first show until late June 2007, for simplicity sake I decided to add them as a developmental territory at the start.

OVW (10% complete)

TNA (30% complete)

ROH (20% complete)

General progress [e.g. title lineages, employment history, un-contracted workers etc.] (40% Complete)

Other American Indie promotions to be added after the first beta release.

Picture Pack Preview:

Thanks to: Phil Parent - 2013 Real-World Locations File.

Mammoth - Mammoth Gimmick File.

sockpuppet - The Sockpuppet Injury Mod!.

FULLMetal - Real Lives 2007 Worker Names.

Fleich - RW Chronical was used to import various TV Networks and PPV Carriers, as well as workers who I am not familiar with.

Idolized - Ruthless Aggression 2004 mod graphics were used for most non-people pictures.

You said this is supposed to simulate the aftermath of the tragedy from a US perspective. Outside of I'm assuming Nancy and Benoit being killed in the game what other simulations are there?

Please keep in mind that television ratings didn't drop after this tragedy, that business financially was actually up in the next year and a half after this. They don't go PG for another 15ish months after this and even that was soley a sponsership and corporate situation mostly tied to Linda starting to run for office and had nothing to do with Benoit. There was already a wellness policy in place and it wasn't changed in light of this. Even things like CTE scans and concussion awareness didn't change until well into the new decade. So really the only change was that there was a TON of media surrounding it but as I laid out that media didn't affect tv ratings, ppv buyrates, company financials, sponsorship deals, Benoit's death had zero impact from a business standpoint.

So I was just curious if you meant that you would just be killing off Benoit or if you had some industry changing narratives in mind. I know for some it SEEMED like there was this black mark on the business but it didn't actually affect business at all not in television, not in pay per view, not in profits, not in sponserships, and not even in product or drug testing. Its actually remarkable how in the grand scheme of things absolutely nothing from this affected Vince and the WWE at all.

I look forward to trying this mod out, if hopefully the narratives are easily marked so they can be removed for somebody like me.

It's just a personal taste thing I would rather play without. All the best with the mod.

I originally had the death cause a negative impact on WWE's prestige and the wrestling industry in the USA. It seems I may be wrong about a fall in the industry so I'll do some more research into that and get back to you. However, I'd argue that the mass media attention did have a negative effect on WWE's prestige.

I intend for people to be able to play this with Benoit's death or as if it had never happened.

Places like Larry King did not cast a shadow on the business.

Because prestige in itself is not a metric you can measure (it does relate to ticket sales, financial performance etc. but it's not limited to that) it can be interpreted different by different people. I plan to include the narrative that causes prestige to drop slightly in the mod but I strongly encourage you and anyone else who agrees with you to remove the narrative and enjoy the mod. I feel the negative attention by the mainstream media in regards to steroid use (see that horrible Nancy Grace interview with Kevin Nash) caused the comapnies prestige to take a small hit. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> thanks for the feedback and the arguments made.

(and no, I'm not talking about Nash this time)
