New Japan Pro-Wrestling

New Japan Pro-Wrestling Co., Ltd. (新日本プロレス株式会社 Shin Nihon Puroresu Kabushiki-kaisha), operating as New Japan Pro-Wrestling (新日本プロレス Shin Nihon Puroresu) and sometimes referred to as NJPW, is a major Japanese professional wrestling promotion founded in June 1972 by Antonio Inoki. In 2005, Inoki sold the promotion to Yuke's, who sold it to Bushiroad in 2012. Dean is the current President of the promotion and has held that position since January 2017, when the previous President, Kaname Tezuka, was promoted to Chairman.

Owing to its TV program aired on TV Asahi, NJPW is the largest wrestling promotion in Japan and the second largest in the world in terms of attendance and revenue (behind WWE). From its creation in 1972 until 1986, it was a member of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). NJPW is known for openly engaging in working agreements with various MMA and professional wrestling promotions around the world, and presently has relationships with Pro-Wrestling NOAH (NOAH), Ring of Honor (ROH), Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), Global Force Wrestling (GFW), Revolution Pro Wrestling (RPW) and Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw). NJPW's biggest event is the January 4th at the Tokyo Dome, held each year since 1992 and currently promoted under the Wrestle Kingdom banner.

I'm back with a new New Japan (heh) diary! I had some good stuff going in my old one, but TEW 2016 runs like a dream on my Mac *knocks on wood* and I couldn't resist starting one up again. I am taking a different approach and having my game begin on 1/4/17. I've already booked the Dome show and luckily drew that A rated main event. Again, want to point out Mootinie's NJPW as the gold standard in NJPW dynasties and as a huge inspiration for my format and visual style.

Fan vote for Wrestle Kingdom 11 main event!

Fan vote for Wrestle Kingdom 11 main event! by Dean - 12/4/16

In a shocking turn of events, it has been announced that New Japan will allow a fan vote to determine the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 11! The choice will be between the IWGP Heavyweight Title match that sees the first ever foreign-born G1 Climax winner, Kenny Omega, challenge Kazuchika Okada and the IWGP Intercontinental Title match between champion Tetsuya Naito and Hiroshi Tanahashi!

Tetsuya Naito famously lost the vote to main event Wrestle Kingdom 8, in which the fans chose to see the Intercontinental Title match between Shinsuke Nakamura and Tanahashi over Naito's Heavyweight Title match Okada. Will Naito avenge his loss an finally main event the Tokyo Dome?

Wrestle Kingdom 11 full card

Full card for Wrestle Kingdom 11 @ Tokyo Dome! by Dean - 12/10/16

The full card for Wrestle Kingdom 11 has been announced! In a turn of events that is eerily similar to what unfolded before Wrestle Kingdom 8, the fans voted to see the IWGP Intercontinental Title match in the main event of the evening! We will see Tetsuya Naito defend his Intercontinental Title against the Ace of the Universe, Hiroshi Tanahashi.

The semi-main event of the evening will be the IWGP Heavyweight Title match between the Rainmaker, Kazuchika Okada and the Cleaner, Kenny Omega. This is Okada's 2nd defense, as he beat Naomichi Marufuji at King of Pro-Wrestling in October.

Katsuyori Shibata will continue to wage war against Pro-Wrestling NOAH, but this time he will stand up to the man who has been doing just that - Minoru Suzuki! Suzuki-Gun has been on a rampage in the emerald ring, but Suzuki challenged Shibata in November, after Shibata successfully defended the title against Tomoaki Honma at Power Struggle.

In a special singles match, Hirooki Goto will face Michael Elgin. This is a rematch of their New Japan Cup Semi-Final match that took place back in March. Goto went on to lose in the finals to Naito, but the winner of this contest would certainly have a shot at the IWGP Heavyweight Title at one of the New Beginning shows next month.

The Briscoes have successfully defended their IWGP Tag Team Title twice, defeating Hangman Page and Yujiro Takahashi and the Young Bucks. While they performed well in the World Tag League, the newly formed CHAOS team of Tomohiro Ishii and YOSHI-HASHI won it all, defeating EVIL and SANADA in a wild final. While the Briscoes have seemingly aligned with CHAOS in the past, YOSHI-HASHI ensured at the press conference that he will do everything in his power to win his first title in New Japan.

KUSHIDA has dominated the junior heavyweight scene in 2016, topping off his year with winning the Super-J Cup and successfully defending against longtime rival BUSHI. However, the Best of the Super Juniors eluded him, as the Aerial Assassin, Will Ospreay, became the first British-born wrestler to win the massive tournament. The IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title will be on the line in a match between these two tournament winners!

Satoshi Kojima, Matt Sydal and Ricochet are the longest reigning NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Champions, as they defeated Adam Cole and the Young Bucks in September to retain the belts. On January 4th, they will face off with EVIL, SANADA and BUSHI - Los Ingobernables de Japón!

In what has become tradition, the ROH World Champion will defend his title at the Tokyo Dome. This year, the Japanese fans will be treated to something unique to ROH - the Four Corner Survival! Adam Cole will be defending against Jay Lethal, Dalton Castle and ACH.

The rivalry between NJPW and NOAH continues, as the Third Generation and Great Bash Heel will take on some of NOAH's best in a ten man tag match.

Finally, the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Title will be defended in a 4 way tag match. Pro-Wrestling NOAH's Atsushi Kotoge and Daisuke Harada took NJPW by storm, winning the annual Super Jr. Tag Tournament in December. While the winners traditionally receive a shot at the title, Roppongi Vice were actually the team that eliminated the Young Bucks in the tournament. Furthermore, reDRagon lost the belts last year without ever being pinned, as Matt Jackson scored the victory over Rocky Romero. All four of these teams are more than worthy champions!

The 11th Wrestle Kingdom will be live from the Tokyo Dome on January 4th!

0. New Japan Rumble winner: Liger

comments: I think someone might be able to guess, it's a guy who is on the roster, but not the card below.

1. Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson © vs. Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish vs. Rocky Romero & Beretta vs. Atsushi Kotoge & Daisuke Harada

comments: They should be champions forever and win the heavyweight belts and hold them forever. Not biased at all ;)

2. Yuji Nagata, Manabu Nakanishi, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma vs. Naomichi Marufuji, Toru Yano, Go Shiozaki, Katsuhiko Nakajima & Mitsuhiro Kitamiya

comments:

3. Adam Cole © vs. Jay Lethal vs. ACH vs. Dalton Castle

comments: The ROH World title wouldn't change hands in Japan... even at a Dome Show

4. Satoshi Kojima, Matt Sydal & Ricochet © vs. EVIL, SANADA & BUSHI

comments: As much as I love Sydal and Rico, LIJ is HOT right now

5. KUSHIDA © vs. Will Ospreay

comments: The ace of the Juniors has had his long run but this is the best spot to make a new star

6. Jay Briscoe & Mark Briscoe © vs. Tomohiro Ishii & YOSHI-HASHI

comments: Just to freshen things up

7. Hirooki Goto vs. Michael Elgin

comments:

8. Katsuyori Shibata © vs. Minoru Suzuki

comments: Suzuki is a legend but Shibata needs to have momentum going forward

9. Kazuchika Okada © vs. Kenny Omega

comments: Really sad Kenny isn't main eventing. You'd think with Okada as champ, it'd be the auto main event. This isn't a WK8 situation but both of these will be great. The fact this is the semi makes me think no title change

10. Tetsuya Naito © vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi

comments: Tana put over Okada last year... now it's Naito's time to shine.

Good luck with this. NJPW is a beast to book, really a lot of work.

1. Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson © vs. Kyle O'Reilly & Bobby Fish vs. Rocky Romero & Beretta vs. <strong>Atsushi Kotoge & Daisuke Harada</strong></p><p>

comments: <em>reDRagon have held the titles before and can't do much more with them. Roppongi Vice; the same. I like The Bucks holding the belts and I always give them a substantial reign but the idea of Kotoge and Harada holding them excites me. They are both really good.</em></p><p> </p><p>

2. <strong>Yuji Nagata, Manabu Nakanishi, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma</strong> vs. Naomichi Marufuji, Toru Yano, Go Shiozaki, Katsuhiko Nakajima & Mitsuhiro Kitamiya</p><p>

comments: <em>Look, the legends go over in the Dome. This is WrestleMania booking, you put the guys over that the casuals will know. That said, Nakajima is great and Kitamiya has a hot future. If they give good showings, I'd be more than happy to see them stick around. Kitamiya seems a readymade NEVER title contender.</em></p><p> </p><p>

3. <strong>Adam Cole ©</strong> vs. Jay Lethal vs. ACH vs. Dalton Castle</p><p>

comments: <em>Lizard Man ain't being cornered into a title change here.</em></p><p> </p><p>

4. <strong>Satoshi Kojima, Matt Sydal & Ricochet ©</strong> vs. EVIL, SANADA & BUSHI</p><p>

comments: <em>I was going to go with LIJ but it dawned on me that all three are too good to hold these belts. They should all be moving on to pastures new, like fighting for and holding singles belts. Sanada is the next big star, EVIL is very good given his experience and BUSHI should be facing Kushi. So I'll go with Koji's team to retain here.</em></p><p> </p><p>

5. <strong>KUSHIDA ©</strong> vs. Will Ospreay</p><p>

comments: <em>I'm a huge mark for KUSHIDA. I sat a few rows back at a Rev Pro show and watched him work O'Reilly and it marvelled me how smooth he is even in person. He's the ace of this division and whilst Ospreay has a hot future ahead of him, I'm not entirely sure he has the story to win here and then carry the division. The only reason he wins here is because you're moving Kushi up.</em></p><p> </p><p>

6. Jay Briscoe & Mark Briscoe © vs. <strong>Tomohiro Ishii & YOSHI-HASHI</strong></p><p>

comments: <em>LOOSE EXPLOSION! NECKLESS ABANDON! ON THE SAME TEAM?! Sign me up.</em></p><p> </p><p>

7. Hirooki Goto vs. <strong>Michael Elgin</strong></p><p>

I'm curious how you handle Goto because he's not the kind of guy that should be fighting for the title and with Shibata occupied with the NEVER belt, you can't really move him into the tag ranks. Right the wrong from your last diary and keep him away from Okada alright? </em><img alt=";)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/wink.png.686f06e511ee1fbf6bdc7d82f6831e53.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

8. <strong>Katsuyori Shibata ©</strong> vs. Minoru Suzuki</p><p>

comments: <em>You can count on this being a great match but I can't really think of a reason that Suzuki should win. Again, like Kushi's match. If Shibata is moving up, he can drop this belt. Otherwise, he's the right guy of the two to be holding it.</em></p><p> </p><p>

9. Kazuchika Okada © vs. <strong>Kenny Omega </strong></p><p>

comments: <em>If there's one regret I have from my diary, it's that I never got to write a serious Okada reign. I feel you may miss out too because Omega is riding a tidal wave of momentum and denying him here could deny you the long-term story of Okada getting his win back. That's the route I'd take: roll with Omega, redemption for Okada. Whilst I'm sad to see this get bumped, it makes sense in that I feel Okada is the #2 guy and Omega is the #4 guy. This whole not being above Tana continues to hover over Okada's head and hopefully you play up to that at some point.</em></p><p> </p><p>

10. Tetsuya Naito © vs. <strong>Hiroshi Tanahashi </strong></p><p>

comments: <em>I never did get the grades out of these two that I always wanted given the story but this should be seriously great and I have no qualms with his continuing onwards after this match. Naito was a joy for me to write, his heel iteration is fantastic fun in word form and on the screen and I only hope you have as much fun with him as I had. I think him coming back at Tana with a vengeance after he loses here would make for a marvelous story heading into the NJC, especially given history and Tana's more arrogant tendencies that only need a slight to stand up and rear their head. Mr. Tokyo Dome takes home the W here and air guitars to see us home. The more things change, the more things stay the same. </em></p>

<p>New Year Dash!! results</p><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="color:#FF0000;">New Year Dash!! results</span></strong> by <strong><span style="color:#FF0000;">Dean</span></strong> - <em>1/5/16</em></p><p> </p><p> </p><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">The annual New Year Dash!! event has always shaped the direction of the coming months in New Japan, and this night was no different. The biggest outcome of the night was Hirooki Goto pinning the newly crowned IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega! Goto was already in line for a title shot after defeating Michael Elgin at Wrestle Kingdom, but this victory guarantees he will be facing Omega in the near future, most likely at the New Beginning.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> In addition, Los Ingobernables de Japón successfully defended their newly won NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Titles in a great match, as SANADA once again used the Skull End, this time making KUSHIDA submit. After the match, SANADA challenged Hiroshi Tanahashi for his IWGP Intercontinental Title, proclaiming he would avenge Tetsuya Naito's loss and would bring the title back to Los Ingobernables.</div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> But perhaps the biggest news of the night was the return of Kamaitachi, who was introduced as the newest member of Los Ingobernables! NJPW presents CMLL Fantastica Mania! Cards for nights 1 & 2!

Full cards for the first two nights of Fantastica Mania! by Dean - 1/10/17

The Fantastica Mania Tour is an annual group of shows held in mid-January that feature some of the best luchadores from CMLL! This year is no different, as some of the biggest names in lucha libre will be competing in a New Japan ring. Many of the competitors from last year will be returning, along with a few new faces, including Caristico, who is one of the biggest stars in Mexico and recently wrestled at the Super J-Cup here in Japan.

The cards for the rest of the tour will be announced shortly, but the matches for the first two nights have been released. Both shows will see Hiroshi Tanahashi continue his feud against Los Ingobernables de Japón - he will team with Michael Elgin and Caristico to take on Tetsuya Naito, SANADA and BUSHI on the first night, and will tag with Caristico against EVIL and SANADA on the second.

Once I got all the talent trading and contracts out of the way, these were pretty fun to book. I am only doing five nights, but will post the cards in two batches. Have fun with these predictions, as I already booked the cards and some of the lucha matches were real toss ups. ;)
