Planet Stasiak
Signing Jay Leno in my struggling WCW in the begining of 2000 was a wise choice. The man's microphone skills & star quality advanced several of my storylines through his tonight show interview segments on Nitro . As a freelancer however, Mr. Leno decided that he did not want to stay in my company and left in September; even though i told him that i needed him until Starrcade. Thus my friends, i am in need of popular personilties in 2000 who can fill his role. Which non-wrestling celebrities/personalities would you think are interested in joining the bussiness? In one interview in 2000, Larry King said that he'd like to "Take a swing at wrestling on day" although i doubt he"ll leave CNN for WCW.
Remianen
I think the problem is your line of thinking. For example: In one interview in 2000, Larry King said that he'd like to "Take a swing at wrestling on day" although i doubt he"ll leave CNN for WCW. Why would he have to leave CNN? People in entertainment take side gigs all the time. Alec Baldwin isn't a full-time member of the cast of Saturday Night Live, for example. Unless you want to book him on every show (why?), a 'recurring' role would be fine. In that case, he'd work under a PPA contract. Or, you sign him to a written (or XPPA, if it wasn't so flimsy) which would denote that WCW is the only wrestling promotion he could work for (for the length of the contract, at least). As far as personalities go, if you had Jay Leno, why not David Letterman? Conan O'Brien, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Dana Carvey (who has several characters, not including the Church Lady, who might make for good choices), and maybe Kevin Nealon might be alternatives. Arsenio Hall might be good for a splash (he was on hiatus from the business in 2000). Keith Jackson could possibly give you a Jim Ross-like personality but still have a sports bent. Heck, now that I'm thinking about it, the mid to late 90s had a lot of choices. Chevy Chase, Regis Philbin, Space Ghost, Phil Donahue, and on and on. But I've got one for you that'll probably tick all the boxes in your mind: HOWARD STERN

Libertine States
If you wanted someone that could make fun of people real well, George Carlin or Richard Pryor would be a good choice. Both are still alive at this time period, but I'd imagine they would rather sign with Attitude Era WWF.

His TV show on CBS launched in 1998 but was shedding affiliates like a longhair dog in the springtime. But, he was almost always on TV for one reason or another and he was the highest paid radio personality in the country. He was also regularly running afoul of the FCC, which consistently generated headlines. His audience was large enough that it made him a significant influencer in the eyes of sponsors. I don't think we've ever seen anyone duplicate that level of clout or success unless they started on TV. Then when he jumped to Sirius in '04, that was a huge deal (so his popularity might've spiked to a B at that point). The biggest star in (terrestrial) radio jumps to satellite radio and, to some, legitimizes it in a way that no one else could.
Bigpapa42
Some great suggestions already.

Another angle you can run with for personalities is looking at music. There are a ton of musicians who love wrestling and would potentially be involved if possible. The Smashing Pumpkins were pretty huge at the time and obviously Corgan is a huge wrestling geek. Rick Rubin as well.

One of the most legendary hype men in wrestling history started his entertainment career as the front man of a one hit wonder. That being "The Mouth Of The South" Jimmy Hart. His band was known as The Gentrys whose song Keep On Dancin' was huge in the mid-60's. Wanna say 65 but I'd have to look it up. Regardless it gives you an idea how long Bigpapa's point has been true and how well a seemingly random musician could fit.

BHK1978
I am surprised that nobody brought up Freddie Prinze Jr. I mean he would end up working for the WWF and at the time he was considered a heartthrob thanks to those teen romance comedies he starred in and the I Know What You Did Last Summer movies.

If you are looking for a Z-list guy and continuing with the Howard Stern theme, you could go with Hank the Angry Dwarf. He was a huge wrestling fan, trust me I know. I used to see him at various local indy shows back in the late 90's early 00's. He was always drunk out of his mind and he would yell at the heel wrestlers. Didn't some members of Howard's Whack Pack show up on RAW around this time?

You could maybe even go with someone like Mancow, who was a wrestling fan. Granted he was not a huge celebrity but still he was somewhat known on a national level.

One last name...Richard Hatch the original winner of Survivor. He was big enough at the time. I mean I did not even watch the show at the time and I knew exactly who he was.
Planet Stasiak
Thanks BHK. I discovered Mancow recently when watching WCW on the Network. Will add these names to my game.
