CILL: Adios

It’s another evening out on the balcony with El Maestro and, this time, referee Esteban Ferrer is here too. Maestro is working his way through the beer with even more enthusiasm than usual, safe in the knowledge that Esteban will be able to drive him home. Ferrer hasn’t a word of English though so he hasn’t contributed much to the conversation.

It might be as well that he doesn’t understand anything as our boss spent the first few minutes after arriving here making wisecracks about Ferrer’s slide into flabbiness. He’s been the referee here since the first show so maybe they’ve a strong enough bond that it’s all light-hearted fun but I’d be embarrassed to discover that El Maestro has been chuckling, even in jest, about my skinny ass. I resolve to start spending a little more time in the gym. I’m pulled from contemplation of my own physical short-comings when Maestro asks,

“How do you think she took it?”

I shake my head, run my hands through my hair, sigh and cast my mind back to a meeting just a couple of hours earlier.

I’m already in situ in the small room above the gym that doubles up as our official HQ when Jaguar Queen arrives. Her English is passable to I’ve decided to brave this without an interpreter. At the show we booked her match with Maribel Mercado to have an injury angle.

“So how long I will be injured for?” she asks me.

She’s quite a nice girl, she’s quiet and warm. She’s got a fairly high opinion of herself but I can hardly throw stones in that regard myself. She’s got a decent look, she’s bigger than the rest of the women here but still muscular. She’s got a lot of upside on paper and I can understand why she was given a run with the CILL Women’s World Championship. All of those things though only make what I’m about to say harder,

“We’re letting you go.”

I think it’s better to just come right out with bad news. She swallows a bit, she doesn’t say anything but her eyes give her disappointment away.

“It’s nothing personal and we’re not closing the door permanently. It’s just… your performances right now aren’t where we need them to be. Honestly? I feel we gave you chances. You were in the title match at my first show and at that point I hoped you were gonna be a big player for us. Unfortunately since then… even as a Rudo, you’ve fallen behind Maribel and the Anti-Establishment.”

“And your fancy new signing,” she adds with the tiniest hint of bitterness creeping into her voice,

“Yeah,” I concede, “her too.”

“Maybe as a Tecnico,” she suggests but her tone makes it clear that she knows she’s grasping at straws now and she trails off,

“I’m sorry,” I tell her, “We’ve already turned Poison Ivy and we signed somebody else too.”

“Raiding QAW again?”

“No. Not this time.”

There’s a pause and I start to wrap things up.

“Look, it all came down to your last match. We were always going to work with the injury angle. If you’d shown enough improvement we’d have brought you back in a couple of months to feud with Maribel. That could still happen someday. As it is though… the match wasn’t good enough. We’ve fleshed out the Women’s Division enough that I just don’t think you’d be used to do anything other than act as a jobber. So I just feel that it’s in everybody’s best interest if we have a parting of ways. I genuinely wish you nothing but the best.”

I stand and offer her my hand. For a moment I think she’s going to refuse it but after a pause she reaches out, shakes it briefly, murmurs an “adios” and leaves.

I look back at Maestro who is still waiting for an answer.

“She took it ok. As well as could be hoped. We walk on eh?”

“We walk on,” he replies, “you and me and Flabby Ferrer.”

It's always sad when you have to let someone go, especially if you've been writing them in a diary and start to see them as "people" after a fashion. I know that's been the case with me; I let go of Lady Liberty and Black Widow almost immediately, and those have been my only outright cuts. I allowed the contracts of Glorious Gloria and Jessica Bunny to end without re-signing. That's only 4 workers. I've lost as many workers from talent raids as I have chosen to let go. So props to you for being able to do so - and for writing up a compelling vignette about that choice.

These five men will be locked within the confines of a steel cell. The biggest prize in the company is there to be raised in triumph by the winner at the end – the CILL World Championship. Diamante Negro has held the title since January. The savvy, cynical American has been a worthy champion in that time but this is undoubtedly his biggest challenge yet. Facing him will be three other two-time champions including the man he dethroned, the first CILL World Champion, the veteran Magik. Also in this one is the longest reigning champion Fallen Angel and the always dangerous opportunist El Pavo Real. The exciting, rising star Entropy rounds out the field.</p><p> </p><p> What really makes this match distinct is the sting in the (devil’s) tail. The Anti-Establishment make no bones about the fact that they’re here to take over, that they have nothing but contempt for the traditions of CILL and Lucha Libra and they’re not being given the opportunities that they feel they deserve. Standing against these invaders are a quartet of CILL’s finest. Led by CILL Women’s World Champion Estrella Blanca, Team CILL have even managed to get Poison Ivy and Maribel Mercado on their side, despite that pair’s proclivity for breaking the rules. It seems reasonable to assume that this bout will have potentially huge repercussions for the Women’s Division and, indeed, CILL as a whole.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/1tz1C4p.jpg</span><p> <span>http://i.imgur.com/BrBU7sH.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/rIsSyCN.jpg</span> w/<span>http://i.imgur.com/hFduz82.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/oo6E28C.jpg</span></p><p> <span>http://i.imgur.com/h5N1PGE.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/7ybUCDs.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/oo6E28C.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/pGLNjPz.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/jzbjULu.jpg</span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Rapid Attack (Amazing Fire Fly & Rapido) © w/Mercedes Gimenez Vs. Rapid Attack have been impressive this year with Amazing Fire Fly in particular being tremendous between the ropes all year long. Ably guided by Mercedes Gimenez they face the unique challenges of a Triple Threat match here. Neither of the challenging pairings can be discounted and both come into this one highly decorated and with experience and incentive aplenty to fire them. The Viking Raiders are dangerous men and will still feel that they have a claim upon the title belts. Ragnar and Uhtred will boast a power and size advantage in this one but much will depend upon how they can slow their faster foes. The Wild Cats have had a difficult year so far but showed their mettle and guile to take advantage of an unplanned distraction to upset Black Gold last time out. That victory earned them a place in this match and they will be motivated to take advantage of the opportunity presented to them. This is a big match, full of big time performers and you can expect real drama and action.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/Bs7aELj.jpg</span><p> <span>http://i.imgur.com/aeED7i9.jpg</span> w/<span>http://i.imgur.com/sWIXfkY.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/oo6E28C.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/6P2ia5Q.jpg</span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>El Sultan © w/Antonia Andres Vs. El Sultan won his third CILL Mexican title from Aztec Prince. He has not shied away from dismissing the Chilean youngster’s credentials and declared that he, in addition to being a fitting Mexican Champion is also the true South American Champion. He had every intention of proving this by adding Tag Team gold to his resume but this plan came unstuck when Aztec Prince made a timely distraction in Black Gold’s title audition last month. If Aztec Prince’s goal was to get the Brazilian’s attention he has certainly succeeded in that goal and he now has an opportunity to win back the title he considers his own. El Sultan, for his part, shouldn’t under-estimate the hot-headed challenger or he could find himself left with nothing.</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/yESFpJE.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/oo6E28C.jpg</span><span>http://i.imgur.com/Eif7tnr.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Hypnotiq Jr Vs. For Hypnotiq it is all about bringing glory and honour to the mask and living up to his family legacy. For Messiah it is the fulfilment of his dark and twisted promises of salvation and redemption. <p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">CILL: The End Times Arrive - Predictions Card</span></strong></p><p>

Diamante Negro © w/Antonia Andres Vs. <strong>El Pavo Real</strong> Vs. Entropy Vs. Fallen Angel Vs. Magik – Pentagram Match for the CILL World Championship</p><p>

Comment: <em>I'm certain for 2 out of 3 things here: Negro loses the title and Magic gets pinned, the question is who scores it. Multi man matches are a great way for titles to change hands while still giving former champions a legit excuse and claim to a rematch. I'm tempted to say Entropy wins this to raise his pop with the backup plan of D-Neg taking it back if things backfire, but I feel like it's too early to pull the trigger on an Entropy title run just yet,</em></p><p><em>

so I'm going with Pavo since he's done marginally better than Fallen Angel.</em></p><p>

Team CILL (Estrella Blanca, Maribel Mercado, Pinkie Perez and Poison Ivy) Vs. <strong>The Anti-Establishment (Hellcat Hernandez and Pamela Rojo) and two others</strong></p><p>

Comment: <em>Invaders need the win and momentum to stay relevant. Having a mixed face/heel team signals implosion, which is a legit way for team CILL to lose while looking strong. Also a good match to set up/advance individual feuds.</em></p><p>

<strong>Rapid Attack (Amazing Fire Fly & Rapido) © w/Mercedes Gimenez</strong> Vs. The Viking Raiders (Ragnar The Viking & Uhtred The Viking) Vs. The Wild Cats (El Jaguar and Tigre Salvaje Jr) – for the CILL World Tag Team Championship</p><p>

Comment: <em>Too early for the champs to lose and neither of the challenging teams has really been convincing to the point where they feel like champs in waiting.</em></p><p>

<strong>El Sultan © w/Antonia Andres</strong> Vs. Aztec Prince (Lucha Libre Match for CILL Mexican Championship)</p><p>

Comment: <em>Sultan wins but Prince is kept strong. Manager interference likely, as is a surprise distraction by Sultan's Black Gold teammate</em></p><p>

Hypnotiq Jr Vs. <strong>Daire Messiah</strong></p><p>

Comment: <em>Daire needs the win here. I'm just hoping he hypnotizes/brainwashes Hypnotiq into an acolyte of the Salvation Cult. The name is too good to drop such an angle.</em></p><p>

<strong>Dragon Del Arco Aris and The Wildfires (Wildfire Blaze & Wildfire Inferno) w/Mercedes Gimenez</strong> Vs. Border Patrol II, El Serpiente and Hush – 3 Vs. 3 Lucha Libra match</p><p>

Comment: <em>Draco and Wilfires are bigger names than their opponents, who feel like a random team to just include everyone.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Bonus Questions</p><p>

1) Who gets fired at the end of the Pentagram Match? (1 point) <strong>Magik</strong></p><p>

2) Who are the two mystery partners for The Anti-Establishment? (1 point if one correct, 3 points if both correct) <strong>Purple Viper and Mystery Pink</strong></p><p>

<p>Él Pavo Real</p><p> </p><p>

I feel like this is the best way to get the belt on Pavo. He's my favourite of the bunch so, I cannot see anybody else winning.</p><p> </p><p>

Anti establishment </p><p> </p><p>

A win for the invaders makes more storyline sense. </p><p> </p><p>

Rapid Attack</p><p> </p><p>

I'm going for the safe pick here despite the Wild Cats presence here. I could see those felines get the belts here but maybe not quite yet. </p><p> </p><p>

El Sultan</p><p> </p><p>

Once again going for the safe pick as this one could really go either way. </p><p> </p><p>

Daire Messiah</p><p> </p><p>

Surely hypnotiq is member 3 of the salvation cult</p><p> </p><p>

Border Patrol, El Serpiente and Hush</p><p> </p><p>

The wildfires on the opposite side show me that these guys win. </p><p> </p><p>

I think <strong>Fallen Angel</strong> gets fired. I think El Pavo Real is the safest if the lot while Diamanté, magik and angel all are in danger. However, entropy or even real could have been stolen by sotbpw but I'll go with angel as I feel he narrowly loses to magik as magik was recently champion. </p><p> </p><p>

Let's go <strong>Foxxy LaRue</strong> and <strong>Jillian Jarvis</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Fire Fly</strong> for best. <strong>Wildfire Blaze</strong> for worst.</p>

Looking forward to this show. As bad as Jaguar Queen has been in any playthrough I've seen, kingjames is right that you did a tremendous job still drawing sympathy for her firing. When Magik gets let go (keeping my fingers crossed), I don't think I'll feel the same way. :)

CILL: The End Times Arrive - Predictions Card

Diamante Negro © w/Antonia Andres Vs. El Pavo Real Vs. Entropy Vs. Fallen Angel Vs. Magik – Pentagram Match for the CILL World Championship

Comment: Black Gold is still your top draw, and I don't think anyone else in this match is capable of carrying the company.

Team CILL (Estrella Blanca, Maribel Mercado, Pinkie Perez and Poison Ivy) Vs. The Anti-Establishment (Hellcat Hernandez and Pamela Rojo) and two others

Comment: Thinking that the heels need another win to establish them. Really curious to who the mystery wrestlers are. I can't see you bringing anyone that can't immediately make an impact.

Rapid Attack (Amazing Fire Fly & Rapido) © w/Mercedes Gimenez Vs. The Viking Raiders (Ragnar The Viking & Uhtred The Viking) Vs. The Wild Cats (El Jaguar and Tigre Salvaje Jr) – for the CILL World Tag Team Championship

Comment: I could see the Wild Cats taking this after their surprise win against Black Gold, but I think Black Gold vs Rapid Attack is where we are headed next.

El Sultan © w/Antonia Andres Vs. Aztec Prince (Lucha Libre Match for CILL Mexican Championship)

Comment: Black Gold keeps both belts ahead of going for the tag titles.

Hypnotiq Jr Vs. Daire Messiah

Comment: Daire is starting to perform better, so I think you give him/you the win here to really get that momentum going.

Dragon Del Arco Aris and The Wildfires (Wildfire Blaze & Wildfire Inferno) w/Mercedes Gimenez Vs. Border Patrol II, El Serpiente and Hush – 3 Vs. 3 Lucha Libra match

Comment: Tough. You seem high on El Serpiente, but not sure about his two partners. Wildfires are still useful to you, and Dragon might be building to a shot at one of the singles titles. Makes me think Dragon's team takes it then.

Bonus Questions

1) Who gets fired at the end of the Pentagram Match? (1 point) I've never rooted as hard for someone to lose as I have with Magik in this match. :D

2) Who are the two mystery partners for The Anti-Establishment? (1 point if one correct, 3 points if both correct) I'm thinking you want another QAW team. There aren't many in the beginning of the game. My first thought was Danielle Sweetheart as a heel with Jillian Jarvis, but I'll go with Crackdown (Toni Parissi and Juana Huracan). Two solid heels to add to the other two solid heels, but not wrestlers with overwhelming popularity that have to dominate. With the growth of the Women's division, any thought to creating a tag division for them?

3) Who will be the best and worst performing wrestlers on the show? (1 point if one correct, 3 points if both correct) You seem to have a main event curse going on, so I'll say Amazing Fire Fly as best, Hypnotiq Jr as worst.

I’m putting on my wrist tape and making semi-awkward small talk with Hypnotiq Jr. ahead of our match later tonight. He still doesn’t particularly like me, still carrying a grudge of sorts for the supposed indignity of having to draw with me on the pre-show of my first CILL event. He keeps his head down though and gets on with things and hasn’t caused any particular trouble so, all going well, we’ll still have good things in our futures. Samael the Accuser (Hector to his friends) is hanging around too and acting as a decent buffer between the two of us. All in all I’m feeling pretty good and starting to believe that it’s going to be a successful night when there’s a knock on the door.</p><p> </p><p>

“Come on in,” I call out.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="n0aDVDR.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/n0aDVDR.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The door opens and in steps our Road Agent Mateo Iglesias wearing an expression that I am growing to loathe because it always means that there is trouble. I don’t blame Mateo either, it’s not his fault but it’s reached the stage that him looking for a chat means that something has gone awry somewhere and it’s hard to muster up a lot of enthusiasm for these occasions. This time is no exception.</p><p> </p><p>

“El Serpiente missed the meeting for his match tonight,”</p><p> </p><p>

I sigh deeply.</p><p> </p><p>

“Is he here now?” I ask in an even a tone as I can manage.</p><p> </p><p>

“He just arrives,” comes the response in Mateo’s heavily accented, imperfect English.</p><p> </p><p>

“Send him my way por favour,”</p><p> </p><p>

Mateo, Hypnotiq and Samael leave as one and I have a few minutes to gather my thoughts waiting for my latest problem to get here. There’s a knock on the door shortly afterwards and I tell them to come in.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/cV83sLE.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

El Serpiente strolls in and waits. For all his issues he’s quite a humble guy. For me he’s always seemed erratic more than malicious. Still, I’m the boss here and I need to maintain discipline. </p><p> </p><p>

“What happened?” I ask,</p><p> </p><p>

“I get the times wrong, is an accident, I not want to cause trouble,”</p><p>

This all sounds very reasonable and I’d like to believe him but the kid is a smooth manipulator too if the backstage gossip is to be believed (and it rarely is but even so…)</p><p> </p><p>

I pause and consider my next words for a moment. I think I can sense a slight anxiety in the guy but how genuine is it? It’s anyone’s guess. El Serpiente is only 26 and a serious talent, his in ring work is superb and only getting better. If we can get him over here we’ll have a major draw on our hands. Against all that though I believe in treating people fairly and being consistent. Nobody gets to act up in my locker room. There can be no exceptions.</p><p> </p><p>

“Look… it’s like this. You’ve got a hell of a lot of ability. I have big plans for you in the long-term and I see you being the type of name that can really develop into a Main Event talent here in time. I respect what you can do between the ropes. I don’t want there to be any issues between you and I. The other side of that though is that you need to cut out the nonsense. I haven’t forgotten that stupid stunt you pulled with Monkey Man earlier in the year either.”</p><p> </p><p>

“That was months ago boss,” he protests,</p><p> </p><p>

“I don’t care,” I tell him, “I remember it. I’m glad there hasn’t been a repeat of that sort of rubbish but this is no different. You’re in a six man match tonight. The other five turned up on time for your meeting, Mateo turned up on time. What the hell makes you any different?”</p><p> </p><p>

“It was an accident,”</p><p> </p><p>

“Stop!” I tell him, “just listen to me. I don’t care if you forgot, I don’t care if your alarm clock was stolen, I don’t even care if you were late getting here because you pulled a busload of nuns and orphans out of a river. You were late, you didn’t let any of us know. You’re an adult and this is your responsibility. Take responsibility for yourself and you and I will get along just fine. I’m fining you for this and I really, really don’t want to see you in another scrape like this.”</p><p> </p><p>

I soften my tone slightly before wrapping up,</p><p> </p><p>

“Just get out there and do what we all know you can do. You have what it takes to go a long way in this business, don’t let silly, needless drama slow you down.”</p><p> </p><p>

He nods, offers me a handshake and goes about his way. I don’t feel like I’ve really gotten through to him but I feel like he’s taken it on the chin at least. Only time will tell where it all goes from here and, in the short term, my energies will be better spent focusing on tonight’s show.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i.imgur.com/9xOOJfA.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p>

<em>So I return after an unfathomable delay... the show has actually been done for a couple of weeks and will hopefully get up in the next day or two as well. Life my friends... it leads us down complicated roads at the best of times!</em></p>

The sixth show of the year for CILL began, as has become the tradition, began with Mercedes Gimenez opening proceedings and talking through the card. Her portrayal of the Damsel is getting better and better and this, coupled with her sexuality, goes some way towards getting things off to a hell of a start. When she displays fear at the invasion of The Anti-Establishment or the hell that awaits the five men in the Pentagram Match there’s not a man in the capacity crowd who wouldn’t stand against a tidal wave to protect her. Gimenez’ gimmick is looking Legendary at this point and that change, one of the first made when Daire Messiah took over the book at the beginning of the year, has been a major success.</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Dragon Del Arco Aris and The Wildfires (Wildfire Blaze & Wildfire Inferno) w/Mercedes Gimenez Vs. Border Patrol II, El Serpiente and Hush – 3 Vs. 3 Lucha Libra match</strong></p></div><p></p><p>

The in-ring action began with this 3 Vs. 3 bout contested under Lucha Libre Rules. It went 12’04 and, somewhat surprisingly, ended with the Rudo trio winning in two straight falls. El Serpiente scored the final pinfall in this open contest, covering Wildfire Blaze for a three count after hitting his patented Cobra Twist. He and Dragón carried the action in this one with Wildfire Blaze also giving a reasonable performance. Wildfire Inferno, on the other hand, was disappointing. The other two young Rudos, in rare outings, had mixed evenings. Border Patrol was ok, not outstanding enough to suggest that he’s in line for a big push but not so awful that he’s likely to be given up on either. Hush was poor, clearly the worst in the ring in terms of actual wrestling. Despite this though he does seem to be showing some improvement and his Star Quality and Charisma are apparent enough that I would expect CILL to make him somewhat of a project. The same can be said for El Serpiente of course but there’s no denying that he is much further along. Dragón, it is fair to note, also looks every inch a star.</p><p> </p><p>

The match itself helped to get the crowd hotter and served the purpose for which it existed. Mercedes Gimenez did some good work at ringside again and while the pace was somewhat muted as the story of the Rudos trying (successfully!) to prove their worth against older, more experienced foes this was a perfectly reasonable opening match. Even referee Victor Fernandez displayed more character than usual.</p><p>

The next segment began backstage with Maribel Mercado and Poison Ivy backstage. The nominally Rudo half of Team CILL were discussing who was likely to be joining The Anti-Establishment to face them when Hellcat Hernandez and Pamela Rojo arrived themselves and slammed into Poison Ivy from behind. Mercado, after the briefest of pauses, sprang to action… joining in the assault of Poison Ivy. With three QAW veterans on the assault Poison Ivy had no chance. At the conclusion of the beatdown the attacking trio told us that Mercado had switched sides and that with Poison Ivy in no state to fight tonight now suddenly it was Team CILL who would need to find two mystery partners for their match later.</p><p> </p><p>

As ever these angles are not super over here in CILL but they serve a necessary function. Poison Ivy’s Tecnico turn is completed and we go from knowing all four members of Team CILL and only two of the invaders to having two vacant positions on the Tecnico side and only one with their opponents.</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Hypnotiq Jr Vs. Daire Messiah</strong></p></div><p></p><p>

It was January when these two first met at CILL: Flashpoint. While Messiah has improved considerably since that meeting tonight’s match, laden with High Spots, while not a complete disaster, was actually lesser than their last bout. Messiah won with a quick roll up at 10’03 after a decisive performance. Messiah is still clearly improving and showed plenty of charisma here. Hypnotiq, for his part, still has the look of a potential star and it remains to be seen how his competition with the leader of The Salvation Cult will effect both these men going forward.</p><p>

CILL Women’s Champion Estrella Blanca and Pinkie Perez faced the cameras next. They confirmed that Poison Ivy would be unable to compete tonight and that Maribel Mercado has betrayed Team CILL. The two leading women’s Tecnicos teased facing into the night’s event outnumbered as just a pair before revealing that they already have got their eye on replacements. Both these girls can talk and they did a good job here of getting things back on track and creating a sense of expectation.</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Rapid Attack (Amazing Fire Fly & Rapido) © w/Mercedes Gimenez Vs. The Viking Raiders (Ragnar The Viking & Uhtred The Viking) Vs. The Wild Cats (El Jaguar and Tigre Salvaje Jr) – for the CILL World Tag Team Championship</strong></p></div><p></p><p>

Rapid Attack retained their Tag Team titles in 14’04 of complete Mayhem. Amazing Fire Fly was, despite the overall chaos not suiting him, the best on show here and his Star Quality and Charisma stood out again. Rapido, it should be noted, wasn’t far behind his more highly rated partner and gave an excellent performance of his own. The Wild Cats, despite being the first team eliminated, were also reasonable enough here. El Jaguar, who has Star Quality of his own in abundance, was narrowly the better of the pairing even though both seemed off form in general and Tigre Salvaje Jr. seemed out of his element in the carnage of the booking. It should be noted that the crowd, while buzzing by this point of the show, clearly weren’t enamoured by the overbooking here and it’s something that the CILL booking team would do well to remember. This brings us to The Viking Raiders. They just don’t seem to be clicking with the CILL product and, as big a fan as the booker is said to be, there has to be a question asked as to how many chances they will be given. Uhtred was better than Ragnar (though Ragnar at least is showing hints of improvement) here and, while neither man was outright terrible, they’re still some way from where they need to be if they’re to push on.</p><p> </p><p>

The tag division remains much as it was before then. Rapid Attack remain, deservedly, on top of the pile. Both men in that tandem could probably justify singles pushes by now but there’s a sense that they will have to stay where they are for now. The Wild Cats standing probably benefited from their showing here too though they may have to prove themselves a little more (and, indeed, hope that a credible Rudo team emerges to act as transitional champions) before getting another chance themselves. The Viking Raiders? They’re being slated for a feud with The Wildfires that may prove make-or-break for one or both teams. Black Gold, should they focus on tag team matches, could be worthy contenders too but with them already holding both Men’s singles titles that may not be the case just yet. Any talk of The Salvation Cult stepping up seems decidedly premature too.</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>El Sultan © w/Antonia Andres Vs. Aztec Prince (Lucha Libre Match for CILL Mexican Championship)</strong></p></div><p></p><p>

El Sultán retained his Mexican title in two straight falls with the clock showing 11’39. This was a match where the overall package seemed slightly less than the sum of parts. Both men played their part with the champion just about shading it in terms of individual performance. El Sultán showed plenty of Charisma and the young Chilean challenger has undoubted Star Quality going for him. The crowd were certainly hotter at the ending. Antonia Andres got involved for a finish, distracting referee Esteban Ferrer for just long enough to allow El Sultán to kick Aztec Prince hard between the legs. With Prince grounded it was a simple matter for El Sultán to lock in a Camel Clutch and walk out with both his Mexican Championship reign and CILL’s South American bragging rights intact.</p><p> </p><p>

It’s difficult to predict exactly what will happen with the Mexican Championship for the rest of the year. Certainly nobody would dispute that El Sultán has been a worthy champion but there appears to be a dearth of credible challengers from the Tecnico side of the roster to challenge him. It’s something else for CILL to ponder as they enter their next quarter.</p><p>

Entropy faced the audience next, cutting a backstage promo and hyping up tonight’s Main Event – the much heralded Pentagram match. As the newest member of the Main Event scene this was presumably an audition of sorts for Entropy, an opportunity to prove that he has what it takes to talk the talk as well as walk the walk! Did he succeed? Well… partially. It wasn’t a disaster but he’s a long way from the finished article at the same time. Happily, with youth on his side, he should be given the time and opportunity to improve. Assuming he’s not destined to be the man who is pinned (and fired) in the Main Event tonight…</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Catalina Vazquez, Estrella Blanca, Paige Croft and Pinkie Perez Vs. Hellcat Hernandez, Maribel Mercado, Pamela Rojo and Teresa Perez</strong></p></div><p></p><p>

Let’s start by looking at the line-up shall we? Team CILL replaced the ‘injured’ Poison Ivy and the defector Maribel Mercado with youngster Catalina Vazquez and, more surprisingly, AAA mainstay Paige Croft. Both were adequate here in terms of performance though a long way from the standards set by the excellent Blanca and Perez whose Star Quality and Charisma were off the charts here. There will be hope, if not downright expectation, that time will provide the experience that Vazquez needs and the exposure to get Croft further up the card. It should be noted that Croft’s own Star Quality was clear to see here, her Machine gimmick was very good and, from a story sense, it makes some sense that the AAA competitor would come in to crack heads with the QAW affiliated quartet on the other side.</p><p> </p><p>

Teresa Perez was the last piece of the jigsaw for the Rudos. While she and Mercado are no longer members of the QAW roster it still works to have them standing together with the Anti-Establishment as The Ring Queens, defiant against the traditions of CILL and Mexico. Perez’ own Invader gimmick was great but, despite taking a stunt bump when Perez speared her through a table, this was about the only plus for her individually on the night. She was badly off form and gave the worst performance of the roster on the night. Rojo, Mercado and Hernandez were all adequate (pretty much in that order) with both halves of The Anti-Establishment showing plenty of Star Quality of their own too. Rojo has Charisma to burn as well and it was appropriate that she scored the crucial pinfall, pinning Catalina Vazquez after a Running Powerbomb after an enjoyable 15’34 had elapsed.</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/5hODxYj.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The last angle of the evening saw CILL World Champion Diamante Negro pondering the fate of himself and the three other former CILL World Champions in the upcoming Pentagram match. Negro did a decent job of selling the hardship that awaited in “the satanic structure” as he ran through the accomplishments of El Pavo Real, Fallen Angel and Magik. Maybe it’s that nagging sense that the CILL Main Event scene doesn’t yet have any true stars but this wasn’t what the booking team would have hoped for I’m sure. It would be churlish to blame Negro, we know the man can speak, but it was only marginally superior to Entropy’s effort earlier in the night. Still… it did the job needed and it was time for the first ever Pentagram match.</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Diamante Negro © w/Antonia Andres Vs. El Pavo Real Vs. Entropy Vs. Fallen Angel Vs. Magik – Pentagram Match for the CILL World Championship</strong></p></div><p></p><p>

Diamante Negro successfully defended the CILL World Championship for the fourth time. In 19’55 of action, carried largely by the champion and the equally good El Pavo Real, every one of the five involved had chances in this open contest. It’s difficult to find fault with the winner, Negro is still showing signs of improvement, even at 39, and only El Pavo real showed any real charisma amongst this field. The three Tecnicos were all of a similar standard (though, for the record, Fallen Angel was marginally the worst of them in this match) but ultimately, it was Magik who was pinned and fired. How quickly things changed for him. He was the CILL World Champion at the beginning of the year but now, in June, with his performances in decline and persistent rumours of him being difficult to deal with backstage, his time in CILL has come to an end in dramatic fashion after falling foul to the Champion’s patented Diamond Stud.</p><p> </p><p>

  • 2 weeks later...

http://i.imgur.com/9xOOJfA.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/Eif7tnr.jpg

The show is over and I'm back in my civvies and trying to decide what to do with the rest of the night. Overall the morale is good around the locker room. Pretty much everybody except for me seems delighted with the night. Personally... it's not been bad by any stretch but I still don't feel like we've really progressed since I've arrived. We still haven't really closed in on EMLL, let alone OLLIE. Come tomorrow I'll be back to the drawing board and preparing the next three months of shows.

Tonight though... I don't know yet. The bulk of the roster are planning to head out on the town. I usually don't bother. Why would I? I don't drink and I run out of patience with drunks right about the time they think the night is just getting started. I take out my phone and open my contacts.

rIXJf67.jpg

Alana.

I could call her. It's been six months now. Just ask how she's doing, tell her I'm in Mexico. Just to see... to see... to see what exactly? How well she's doing without me? Who she's doing without me? No... let's not play that game.

azYXH9E.jpg

Paige Croft flashes across my mind. Now there's an interesting woman. Maybe I should go out for a while tonight. Get to know the roster a little better. I put the phone back in the pocket of my jeans. I just don't know any more. A knock on the door pulls me from my thoughts.

"Come in," I call out.

http://i.imgur.com/Gh96Mg8.jpg

Magik comes in and smiles widely.

"Evening boss," he addresses me.

"Magik,"

"I just thought we should have a chat, plan the next step."

"How do you mean?" I ask in slight confusion.

"Well just to see when you're going to bring me back. I was thinking maybe six months, let me come back and challenge for my title again. I could even turn Rudo if you think it would help. Amazing Fire Fly is going to get over huge in my opinion. You could have him defeat Diamante and then I come back in, turn on him and we fight over the title for the next six months. Eventually I'd even put him over."

http://i.imgur.com/BrBU7sH.jpg

I'm actually incredulous. Not at his assertion that Amazing Fire Fly is going to be our big break out star. A complete rookie can see that coming. But I am staggered that Magik doesn't realise that this is the end.

"Magik... I'd never close the door completely on anyone but there are absolutely no plans to bring you back,"

His expression, one of genuine shock, gives me only the tiniest shred of pleasure. There's a pause while he considers this before he asks,

"What do you mean? Why?" with a hint of anger that awakens some irritation in me.

"Where to start Magik? Look, you're 40 and, I take no pleasure in saying this, you're past your best. You're slowing down. To be blunt, you're not getting it done in the ring and I can only see you getting worse rather than better. You're here on a Main Event push, taking home a Main Event wage and it's just not an appropriate use of resources for us right now. Things need to be shaken up around here if we're going to push on and move forward."

Magik opens his mouth to speak but I hold a finger up to quieten him and, warming to my subject now, I continue,

"As well as that, there's your attitude. I could just about justify keeping you around here as a gatekeeper of sorts if you set an example. You could help us to prepare the next generation of top guys both inside and outside the ring. Unfortunately, instead of doing that, you've been a pain in my ass since I got here. Missing Road Agent meetings is bad enough but I haven't forgotten that stunt you pulled where you damaged Border Patrol's rental car and wouldn't pay. It was the behaviour of an immature dickhead to be honest, not an experienced 40 year old veteran."

He's livid now but he's also in shock. He rants that I'm a gringo who has no idea how things work in Mexico, makes some unfathomable allegations that I'm only happy to push the foreign workers before I cut him off again.
