Oh man, I almost missed out on another one!

WCW The Great American Bash 2001 - Official Card

WCW World Heavyweight Championship

"The Chosen One" Jeff Jarrett © vs. "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash

Comment: I don't believe Jarrett will be winning cleanly. Nash would be a solid choice to hold the title right now just due to his popularity, but I think in the long run it wouldn't help you because it'd be a pain to get the title off him. Steiner looks to be the next contender, as he should be.

WCW United States Championship

Rey Misterio Jr. © vs. "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair

Comment: Flair's at that point where he'll probably just be putting people over. Not sure I like it being Rey.....But that's what he's doing here.

Diamond Dallas Page vs. Mike Awesome

Comment: You're probably also going to be using DDP much the same as Flair, but I don't see him ready to be putting over Awesome just yet.

Ladder Match For The WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Billy Kidman © vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr.

Comment: In your last one, I hated (hated) Chavo being the Cruiserweight champion at first. The longer it went on, the more I pulled for him and loved it. You did such a great job on that and it's probably my favorite story. If you manage to do that with Kidman in this universe, it'll be fantastic.

Three Way Dance For A WCW United States Championship Title Shot

Dustin Rhodes vs. "The Franchise" Shane Douglas vs. Lance Storm

Comment: If Rey retains, the logical choice is Storm. They should be able to put on great matches and the other two just don't fit.

Bonus Questions:

Which match will open the show?

- DDP/Awesome. You need to start the show with a BANG!

Which match will be the longest?

- Got to be Kidman/Chavo. I don't see anyone else that has the stamina.

How many titles will change hands?

The majority of this show had already been written by the time I heard the sad news about Bobby "The Brain" Heenan and I went back and forth on whether to keep him in the show or not. In the end I decided to keep him in kind of a tribute to him, but I'm not sure yet if I'll keep using him as a color commentator going forward, as I had originally planned.

Ladder Match For The WCW Cruiserweight Championship

After the opening fireworks display kicks off WCW's second pay per view event since its return, we transition into the entrances for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship ladder match. Tony Schiavone and Mike Tenay are joined at the announce table tonight by none other than Bobby "The Brain" Heenan, who is making his return. The Cruiserweight Champion, Billy Kidman, has already made several successful title defenses since winning the title at The Big Bang, but tonight he faces arguably his biggest challenge yet in Chavo Guerrero Jr. The opening minutes of this one are fast-paced with lots of back and forth action, but as the match progresses the pace slows somewhat, which Mike Tenay calls smart strategy by both men as a ladder match is quite different from an ordinary cruiserweight matchup. There are several close calls during the next few minutes, but neither man are able to grab the belt that hangs high above the ring. The match then takes a turn for the physical as Chavo puts the ladder in one of the corners of the ring, leaning it against the turnbuckle, and then he irish whips Kidman chest-first into the ladder! A concerned Torrie Wilson looks on at ringside as Chavo places the ladder on the floor of the ring, and then he grabs Kidman and suplexes his back-first across the ladder! Chavo then literally kicks the champion out of the ring, and while Torrie attends to Kidman outside the ring, Chavo begins to scale the ladder, looking to claim the Cruiserweight Championship for himself. Amazingly, as Chavo is about halfway up the ladder, Kidman is back in the ring and he starts climbing up the other side of the ladder. Chavo tries to climb faster, but Kidman is able to grab hold of Chavo's left foot to prevent him from getting further up the ladder. The two men start exchanging punches, and after a few blows back and forth both men end up crashing to the floor of the ring. The match kind of resets but Chavo is understandably first to his feet. He goes to punch Kidman, but Kidman blocks it, kicks Chavo in the midsection, and drives him into the mat with a jumping facebuster! Kidman hits a pair of dropkicks, and then he scores big with a BK Bomb and suddenly the champion finds himself in complete control! Kidman starts climbing the ladder, but just like Kidman before, Chavo is able to catch him before he gets to the title. Another exchange takes place at the top of the ladder, with Kidman eventually shoving Chavo off the ladder. But instead of going for the title, Kidman appears to have something else in mind as he readies himself atop the ladder...and then jumps off and hits a HUGE frog splash from the top of the ladder and onto Chavo below! The impact knocked the wind out of Kidman as well, but there is no doubt that Chavo took the worst of that one. A hurting and exhaused Kidman then slowly starts making his way up the ladder again and Chavo, to his credit, manages to try to follow him. But Chavo has taken too much damage and he is only about halfway up the ladder by the time Kidman reaches the top, unhooks the title belt, and retains his championship in what was a grueling opening match!

Billy Kidman defeated Chavo Guerrero Jr. at 15.57 when Kidman retrieved the Cruiserweight Championship title belt. Billy Kidman retains the WCW Cruiserweight Championship (C+)

From cruiserweight ladder match action we move on to tag team action as Chris Kanyon and Bam Bam Bigelow face off against The Mamalukes, Big Vito and Johnny The Bull. These teams don't even bother to wait for the belt to sound before they are at each other's throats, which pretty much sets the stage for how the rest of this matchup goes. The referee could probably have disqualified both teams for not adhering to his warnings about how only one man for each team is supposed to be in the ring at a time, but he decides to let them go at it. Chris Kanyon comes within a split second of picking up the win as he drops Big Vito with the Kanyon Kutter, but Johnny The Bull is there to break it up in time. The Bull sends Kanyon flying out of the ring and then he trades blows with Bigelow. Big Vito joins in and the two on one situation is too much for Bam Bam, who gets planted with the Mamalukes' double team Sky Lift Slam maneuver! Johnny The Bull then covers Bigelow and picks up a big win for the Mamalukes here at the Great American Bash.

The Mamalukes defeated Bam Bam Bigelow and Chris Kanyon at 9.07 by pinfall when Johnny The Bull pinned Bigelow following a Sky Lift Slam (C-)

Rey Misterio Jr. is backstage when he is approached by Konnan, who wishes his friend good luck in his match tonight. Konnan is still kicking himself for losing to Ric Flair this past Monday on Nitro, and he says that he should have taken care of this business right then and there. Konnan is clearly frustrated, but Rey tells him not to worry about it--he's got this tonight. Konnan advices Rey to watch his back, reminding him that Flair is called the dirtiest player in the game for a reason. Rey replies that he knows full well what Ric Flair is capable of, but tonight...Ric Flair is also going to find out what Rey is capable of! ©

WCW Tag Team Championships

The second of four titles matches that are set to take place tonight is up next as Totally Buff defends their WCW Tag Team Championships against Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo. As Lex Luger and Buff Bagwell stall for all that they are worth in the early parts of this one, Tony, Mike, and Bobby talk about the lack of momentum that O'Haire and Palumbo are entering this match with, and they also talk about Mike Sanders' efforts to reunite the Natural Born Thrillers which, as Bobby Heenan says, might not be a bad idea given how unsuccessful the formers Thrillers have been recently. The formers Thrillers look like they might be able to put their recent string of bad luck behind them here as they take the fight to "Buff Daddy", who then tags out to "The Total Package", having had enough for now. Luger doesn't fare much better, however, and the Tag Team Champions soon find themselves regrouping outside the ring. Buff Bagwell re-enters the ring and looks to square off with Sean O'Haire, but Lex Luger slides in behind O'Haire and nails him from behind with a running forearm smash! Bobby Heenan, heeling it out a bit, praises the smart strategy of the champions, while both Tony and Mike see it as more of a cheap shot by Luger. The Champions spend the next several minutes isolating Sean O'Haire in their corner, far away from Chuck Palumbo, and they make frequent tags to keep each other fresh as they wear O'Haire down. O'Haire doesn't go down without a fight, however, and his fight is rewarded as he finally makes the hot tag to Chuck Palumbo who runs Buff Bagwell over with a couple of clotheslines, and then he turns, charges, and nails "The Total Package" on the apron as well! The former Thrillers are rolling here as O'Haire tags back in and holds Bagwell while Palumbo lines up a superkick. Palumbo goes for the kick, but "Buff Daddy" is able to wiggle free and move out of the way, causing almost a repeat of this past Monday on Nitro only reversed as this time it is Palumbo who superkicks Sean O'Haire! Palumbo is stunned for a moment and Buff Bagwell uses that moment to jam a finger into Palumbo's eye, and Palumbo then stumbles right into "The Total Package" who hoists Palumbo up into the Torture Rack! With nowhere to go, and with Sean O'Haire still down following the superkick, Palumbo has no other option than to submit as the former Thrillers' woes continue here at the Great American Bash.

Totally Buff defeated Chuck Palumbo and Sean O'Haire at 11.04 by submission when Lex Luger forced Chuck Palumbo to submit to the Torture Rack. Totally Buff retains the WCW Tag Team Championships (C+)

WCW United States Championship Number One Contender's Match

NBNbcUS.jpgvs.IJIxeY2.jpgvs.xeqPtl1.jpg

A future United States Championship title shot is on the line next as "The Franchise" Shane Douglas, Dustin Rhodes, and Lance Storm do battle in a three way dance. Mike Tenay notes that all three men could have the potential to be future main eventers here in WCW and a shot at the United States Championship would be a big step in the right direction. The first few minutes of this one is actually not a three way dance at all, but rather a one on one matchup as Lance Storm and Dustin Rhodes go at it in the ring, while Shane Douglas opts to merely watch the action at ringside. Bobby Heenan calls it brilliant strategy by Douglas to let the other guys beat each other up and then he can swoop in and pick up the win. It doesn't quite work out that way for Douglas, who gets caught up in arguing with some fans at ringside, and he is suddenly clobbered from behind by Dustin Rhodes, who brings Douglas back into the ring the hard way. Dustin Rhodes hits a couple of clotheslines and a back body drop, and then Lance Storm takes over, hitting a superkick, a jawbreaker, and finally a spinning heel kick that sends Douglas back out of the ring again. With Shane Douglas taken out for the time being, Storm and Rhodes go back to fighting each other. Storm hits a northern light suplex for a two count, and then a bridging german suplex for another two count. Getting frustrated, Storm argues the count with the referee, accusing him of counting too slow, but the referee maintains that it was a two count only. When he finally stops arguing with the referee, Storm turns around and walks right into an inverted atomic drop from Shane Douglas, who has made his way back into the ring. Douglas hits a DDT on Storm, and then locks in an STF on Dustin Rhodes! Rhodes refuses to submit, however, and Lance Storm eventually manages to break up the submission hold.

5crDQaK.jpgRBBYBSm.jpg

Crowbar and Daffney then suddenly make their way toward the ring, much to everyone's surprise, and the announcers immediately wonder what the heck they are even doing here. The match continues in the ring as Lance Storm is able to apply the Canadian Maple Leaf submission hold on Shane Douglas, who struggles to try to get to the ropes. While this is going on, Crowbar enters the ring, pulls Dustin Rhodes to his feet, hooks him up, and drives him into the mat with the Mindbender (Sitout inverted suplex slam)! Daffney screams at the top of her lungs, and Tony notes that there is nothing the referee can do about Crowbar because there are no disqualifications in a three way dance. Crowbar rolls out of the ring again just as Shane Douglas reaches the ropes, but a quick thinking Lance Storm quickly crawls into the cover on Dustin Rhodes and picks up the three count, the win, and a shot at the WCW United States Championship!

Lance Storm defeated Dustin Rhodes and Shane Douglas at 14.14 by pinfall when Storm pinned Rhodes after Crowbar had attacked him. Lance Storm earns a shot at the WCW United States Championship (B-)

Lance Storm has picked up a big win, but all the announcers are talking about is what has brought Crowbar and Daffney back to WCW and why did Crowbar choose to attack Dustin Rhodes? Lance Storm probably couldn't care less because he just won himself an opportunity to challenge for the United States Championship. However, Crowbar is apparently not done here as he re-enters the ring and starts putting the boots to Dustin Rhodes, while Daffney screams with excitement all the while. Crowbar finishes his assault off with another Mindbender and he and Daffney stand menacingly above the fallen Dustin Rhodes as the announcers can only speculate as to why Crowbar has returned to WCW in such a vicious manner. (D)

We head to the back where "Mean" Gene Okerlund is with the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, "The Chosen One" Jeff Jarrett. Gene asks Jarrett about his World Title defense later tonight against Kevin Nash, and Jarrett says that ever since The Big Bang he's had Kevin Nash's number and he has put one over on him time and time again, so what makes Gene think that tonight is going to be any different? Jarrett tells Gene to not even answer that question because the only thing that Gene and everyone else needs to know is that "The Chosen One" walked into the Great American Bash as the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, and he'll walk out of the Great American Bash as the WCW World Heayweight Champion as well--so choke on that, slap nut! ©

Back at ringside, Eric Bischoff's music hits and the owner of WCW comes out from the back to nothing but boos from the crowd. Bischoff is escorted by a small army of security guards as he makes his way down to the ring and motions for his music to be cut. Bischoff says that he's out here because he's got some unfortunate business to take care of, and he then calls out "Big Poppa Pump" Scott Steiner, telling him to come down to the ring because it's time for Steiner to face the music.

aiJ3oYx.jpggBHsAwo.jpgijZDMft.jpg

After a few moments, Scott Steiner's music hits and "Big Poppa Pump" comes out from the back along with his brother, Rick, and Midajah. The trio make their way to the ring, where the security guards form a human wall between Bischoff and the Steiner Brothers, and Bischoff says that he's sick and tired of Scott's attitude and what he did to his limo this past Monday was the straw that broke the camel's back. Scott says that all Bischoff had to do was give him what he wanted, what he deserved, instead of acting like a little bitch. Bischoff says that Scott will indeed get what he deserves--him and his brother both. Bischoff says that the Steiner Brothers will wrestle a tag team match tomorrow night on Nitro and if they lose that match...they are both fired. Scott just laughs and says no one can beat them, but Bischoff says that if Scott wants to play hardball, then he can play hardball too. Bischoff then drops the mic and walks away from the ring, as the announcers note that the fans just got another big reason to tune into Monday Nitro tomorrow night! (B)

"Self High Five" hits and Diamond Dallas Page makes his way out from the back to a huge reaction from the crowd. The cheers quickly turn to boos, however, as Mike Awesome ambushes Page halfway down the entrance ramp. Awesome sends DDP back first into the guard rail on both sides of the ramp, and then he picks Page up and drives him back-first into the ringpost! Tony notes that DDP has said that he believes that Mike Awesome is trying to rebuild his reputation by going after Page, and if he can manage to defeat DDP here tonight at the Great American Bash, that would certainly be a huge boost to the career of Mike Awesome. Awesome rolls Page into the ring and the match finally gets officially under way, but DDP is already in a lot of trouble here. Awesome unloads of Page with some big time right hand shots in the corner, and then he hits an impressive overhead belly to belly suplex. Wasting no time whatsoever, Awesome climbs to the top rope and shows off his impressive agility by hitting a huge splash off the top turnbuckle! Awesome covers, but Page is able to kick out after two. The crowd tries to rally behind Page, but "The People's Champion" is on wobbly legs as he tries to get into a position where he can fight back, and Awesome drops Page with a normal belly to belly suplex this time. Awesome whips Page into the corner and tries his very best to complete squash Page like a bug as he sprints across the ring and connects with massive clothesline/splash combination. Page staggers out of the corner and Mike Awesome sets up for the Awesome Bomb...but Page is able to back drop his way out of trouble before Awesome can lift him off his feet. Page desperately tries to fight his way into the match, stringing a few punches together before going for a big discus clothesline...which connects, but Awesome doesn't go down as he is only stunned. Page follows up with an inverted atomic drop, and then a russian legsweep that finally takes Awesome off his feet and gives DDP a chance to regroup and catch his breath. Page tries to go back on the attack, but Mike Awesome catches him by surprise, lifts him up, and drives him into the mat with a vicious spinebuster! Awesome then whips Page into the corner again and goes for another big splash in the corner...but Page moves out of the way and Awesome connects with not only the turnbuckle, but his head actually hits the ringpost as well! Awesome is clearly stunned from the impact of the ringpost as he staggers out of the corner and right into....A DIAMOND CUTTER!! Page then drapes an arm across the chest of Mike Awesome and picks up the pinfall victory after being on the defensive for most of the match.

Diamond Dallas Page defeated Mike Awesome at 12.05 by pinfall with a Diamond Cutter (B)

Earlier tonight we heard from the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, Jeff Jarrett, and now "Mean" Gene Okerlund is backstage with the number one contender to the World Heavyweight Championship, the man who will challenge Jeff Jarrett for that title later tonight, "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash. Gene asks Nash about his thoughts on the main event and Nash says that it sounds like Jarrett has been drinking some of his own kool-aid because it sounds like he's actually believing his own hype. Nash calls Jarrett a paper champion, saying that he hasn't been man enough to face him so far but tonight he's got no choice but to step into the ring with him. Nash says that tonight that gold is coming back home where it should have been all along; around his sexy waist. ©

Being true to what we have seen from him over the past several weeks, Cash starts this one off by loudly telling Shane Helms that he's the greatest cruiserweight wrestler in the world and that Shane should just do the right thing and lay down for him and save himself a lot of humiliation. "Sugar" Shane has no intention of laying down for anyone, and he reponds with a slap to the face of Cash and just like that the fight is on. Cash proves that he is not all talk as he does manage to hold his own against "Sugar" Shane here, even scoring a near-fall or two. But as the match progresses, Shane Helms takes more control and he eventually plants Cash with a Vertebreaker! But before Helms can go for the cover...

xwUJi96.jpg

He is practically run over from behind by M.I. Smooth, who levels Helms with a nasty clothesline to the back of Helm's head, causing the match to end in a disqualification.

Shane Helms defeated Cash at 7.19 by disqualification when Helms was attacked by M.I. Smooth (C-)

The bell rings as M.I. Smooth helps Cash back to his feet. Cash is still hurting from the Vertebreaker, but he still manages to instruct M.I. Smooth to continue his attack. Smooth pulls Helms to his feet, whips him into the ropes, and drives him into the mat again with a massive powerslam. Cash yells for Smooth to do it again and that is exactly what he does as he hits another brutal powerslam. Thankfully, a group of referees hit the ring to stop the assault on Shane Helms, who may have won the match, but it's Cash who stands tall at the Great American Bash with M.I. Smooth at his side. (D-)

Z1DlA0N.jpg5crDQaK.jpgRBBYBSm.jpg

Following that brutal attack, we cut to the back where "Mean" Gene Okerlund has caught up with Crowbar and Daffney, and Gene questions them about their actions earlier tonight--particularly Crowbar's attack on Dustin Rhodes. Daffney just laughs and screams maniacally, while Crowbar simply says that they're back and this time they are not going anywhere...."Mean" Gene notes that that doesn't really answer his question, but Crowbar and Daffney have already walked off so Gene concludes that that's probably all the answer they're going to get tonight. (D)

The familiar music of "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair hits and Flair makes his way out from the back to a mixed reaction as he is still getting some cheers here in North Carolina. Flair takes his time getting to the ring, and once there, "The Nature Boy" calls for a mic. Flair tells Rey Misterio Jr. that it's time for him to come down here and get taught a lesson in respect because if you mess with "The Nature Boy" you pay the price and now it's time for Rey to pay the piper. "So get your ass down here!" (B-)

"The Nature Boy" gets the first laugh here as he and Rey lock up in the center of the ring and Flair takes the US Champion off his feet with a drop toe hold. Flair quickly gets back to his feet, stylin' and profilin' and wooing before telling Rey that that's how it's done. It is at this moment that Mike Tenay chooses to state the very obvious; that Ric Flair comes into this match with a huge experience advantage over Rey, despite the fact that Rey is more seasoned in the ring than most others are at his age. Rey keeps his cool and doesn't let Flair's antics bother him, even though Flair does everything he can to get into the mind and under the skin of the champion. Pretty much all of Flair's offense focuses on the legs of Misterio, which Tenay calls sound strategy as a bad knee or leg would severely impact what kind of high-risk maneuvers Rey would be able to pull off. Flair follows through with his game plan to perfection as he keeps Rey grounded and unable to get any kind of offense going, limiting Rey to short bursts at best. However, despite his experience and his poor track record with going to the top rope, Flair does indeed head up to and, of course, Rey is able to catch him with a dropkick that sends "The Nature Boy" tumbling to the floor of the ring. Flair tries to find refuge in the corner, but Rey finally manages to get his offense going as he hits a bronco buster, although the grimace on his face tells the story of the damage the challenger has inflicted in this match. Rey positions Flair in the center of the ring with a snapmare, then launches himself into the ropes and delivers a low dropkick to Flair's chest. Rey then springboards off the top rope and hits a moonsault. Rey covers, but Flair is able to shoot his shoulder up after two. Rey tries to continue his attack, but Flair jams a thumb in the champion's eye to stall his momentum. Flair goes back to work on Rey's leg as he hits a chop block and then stomps away on the leg, even placing it on the bottom rope and launching himself into the air and coming down with his entire body weight onto Rey's injured leg. Tony Schiavone notes that Rey looks seriously hurt here as Flair bodyslams Rey in the middle of the ring. Flair then takes his time to style and profile again, sensing that victory, and the United States Championship, is near. Flair lets out a WOO and then he goes for the Figure Four Leglock...but somehow Rey is able to catch Flair by surprise and roll him up...1...2...3!!!!!!

Rey Misterio Jr. defeated Ric Flair at 11.35 by pinfall with a roll-up. Rey retains the WCW United States Championship ©

Rey Misterio Jr. has done the seemingly impossible here as he managed to defeat "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair to retain his United States Championship. Rey quickly rolls out of the ring and makes his way back up the ramp, clutching the US Title tightly in his hands, while Flair is in absolute disbelief in the ring. Bobby Heenan calls it a travesty and an outrage and says that Flair, by all rights, should be the United States Champion right now, which doesn't make much sense to Tony and Mike.

We then cut to the announce table where Tony Schiavone informs us that we are just moments away from tonight's main event where "The Chosen One" Jeff Jarrett puts the WCW World Heavyweight Championship on the line against the challenger, "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash. Mike Tenay calls this a deeply personal match, saying that it all began when Jeff Jarrett and Eric Bischoff screwed Nash out of the World Title at The Big Bang pay per view event after Nash had gone through nineteen other men to win the battle royal for the World Title, only to get ambushed and sucker punched by Jarrett after the match. Bobby Heenan says that Tony and Mike are both twisting the truth and that the only thing that really matters is who has got that big gold belt around their waist and that man is Jeff Jarrett. Tony then sends us back to ringside for our main event of the evening. (B-)

The World Champion is in no hurry to square off against "Big Sexy" here as he immediately bails out of the ring as soon as the bell rings, but that doesn't seem to bother Nash much as he just patiently remains in the ring, leaning against the top turnbuckle. The referee starts the count on Jarrett, and Jarrett is basically daring him to count him out, saying that not only will he retain the title, but Bischoff will make sure the referee is out of a job by tomorrow morning! Tony wonders how Nash is supposed to win this match if the referee is being bullied by Jarrett and Bischoff like this, but the referee actually stands his ground and orders Jarrett back into the ring. Jarrett is furious at this and while he's arguing with the referee, Nash calmly leaves the ring, comes up beind Jarrett, turns his around, and decks him with a big right handed punch! Nash rolls Jarrett back in the ring but as the big man steps over the top rope, Jarrett kicks the exposed leg of Nash and much like a sharp that smells blood in the water, the World Champion goes on the attack. Jarrett works Nash over, hits a swinging neckbreaker, and then applies a sleeper hold in the center of the ring. The crowd rallies behind "Big Sexy" and Nash does eventually make it back to his feet. Nash fires off a couple of elbows, then whips Jarrett into the ropes and catches him with a huge sidewalk slam, which scores him a two count. Nash then starts taking the fight to the Champion, firing off some right hands, a couple of knee strikes, and then he picks Jarrett up and drops him face-first onto the top turnbuckle with a snake eyes! Jarrett staggers out of the corner and Nash takes him off his feet with a short-arm clothesline. The challenger is in full control here, but then...

The WCW Tag Team Champions, Lex Luger and Buff Bagwell, make their way down to ringside to boos from the crowd. Nash sends Jarrett into the corner and places his huge boot right in the champion's throat, and then he unloads with a series of knee and elbow strikes that absolutely rocks "The Chosen One". "The Total Package" Lex Luger is suddenly up on the apron and he draws the referee's attention, allowing Buff Bagwell to enter the ring behind the referee's back and go after Nash. However, Nash sees this coming and "Buff Daddy" ends up charging right into a big boot! Luger then enters the ring and pushes his way past the referee...only to run right into a big boot as well! Kevin Nash has just laid out both members of the WCW Tag Team Champions...but then Jeff Jarrett kicks Nash in the gut and follows it up with a DDT! Tony and Mike both complain about Nash having to fight off three men here, but Bobby Heenan says that The Chosen Ones aren't doing anything that Nash hasn't done himself in the past. "What goes around comes around" notes "The Brain". Jarrett pulls Nash to his feet and sets up for the Stroke, but Nash pushes Jarrett into the ropes and drops another big time sidewalk slam! Nash gets back to his feet and this time he pulls down the straps and throws up the "Too Sweet" hand gesture, signalling that the end is near. Nash then gets the World Champion into position for the Jackknife Powerbomb, but before he can lift Jarrett up, the champion drops to his knees and blatantly hits a low blow right in front of the referee who, having allowed much already in an attempt to avoid a disqualification, if left with no choice but to finally call for the disqualification of Jarrett.

Kevin Nash defeated Jeff Jarrett at 12.47 by disqualification. Jeff Jarrett remains the WCW World Heavyweight Champion (B)

The reigning World Heavyweight Champion has taken the easy way out here and while Nash won the match, Jeff Jarrett remains the World Champion, much to the fans' dismay. The action isn't over yet, however, as Totally Buff are back in the ring and they go back on the attack on "Big Sexy"! Jeff Jarrett eventually gets back on his feet and he joins in as well as The Chosen Ones are beating the hell out of Kevin Nash here!

Diamond Dallas Page comes running out of the back to a great pop from the crowd, but Page is met by both Luger and Bagwell as soon as he enters the ring and while he tries to fight them both off, the numbers game eventually catch up to him and he ends up getting beaten down as well...

BOOKER T's music suddenly hits and the fans are cheering as Booker runs out from the back, making his first appearance since WCW's return! Booker hits the ring and hits a harlem sidekick on Buff Bagwell...and one on "The Total Package" as well! The announcers wonder if Booker has one for the World Champion as well, but instead of a harlem sidekick Booker T kicks Jarrett in the gut and....AXE KICK!!!! The Chosen Ones all roll out of the ring and the Great American Bash comes to an end with the returning Booker T standing tall in the ring! (B)

Original plans called for Kanyon and Bigelow to win, but instead the Mamalukes won the match and Bam Bam Bigelow is off to rehab to hopefully get his problem under control. While management had big plans for the Chris Kanyon/Bam Bam Bigelow tag team, the expectation now is that Chris Kanyon will go back to being a singles wrestler, which is also why he was protected during the team's loss to the Mamalukes at the Great American Bash. As for Bam Bam Bigelow, he was said to have been pleased with management's decision to send him to rehab, as apparently Bigelow was well aware that he had a problem but was unable to deal with it on his own.</p><p> </p><p> "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair was anything but happy about being asked to put Rey Misterio Jr. over--in fact, he was outright furious with the booking of the match. Despite attempts to protect Flair during the match and make him look strong, even changing the planned finish to that of a surprise roll-up instead of a more clear-cut victory, Flair was still furious. In another attempt to appease "The Nature Boy", Flair was pointed out at the post-show meeting as a good example to the rest of the roster for being a veteran who put younger talent over. Flair was said to have appreciated this gesture, but he still left the building in a sour mood. </p><p> </p><p> A few of the veterans in the WCW locker room also offered their opinions about some of the younger talent in the company at the show. Kevin Nash shared his opinion that Chavo Guerrero Jr. lacks the charisma to properly connect with the crowd and suggested letting him go in favor of someone more charismatic, while Scott Steiner offered his profanity-filled negative opinion of Shannon Moore, which can also be summed up in Steiner wanting Moore gone. On a more positive note, Diamond Dallas Page has taken Johnny Swinger under his wing and has been giving the youngster some advice on how to better connect with the fans.</p><p> </p><p> Several wrestler have also been caught in the new WCW drug testing program; "The Cat" Ernest Miller has tested positive for steroids twice. Having already received a stern warning about it after the first time, "The Cat" was then fined after getting caught a second time. Rumor has it that if "The Cat" is caught a third time, he'll be suspended from the company. "The Total Package" Lex Luger has also been caught using steroids and issued a stern warning. This is Luger's only drug test failure to date and management is said to be hopeful that Luger has learned his lesson and improved his behaviour.</p><p> </p><p> And that is all for this edition of WCW Backstage News and Notes!</p><p> </p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><p> The prediction contest results are in and since it stretches over both the Big Bang and the Great American Bash the winners of the first contest are...<strong>Beejus...and Crackerjack,</strong> who both ended up with 12 hits across the two shows. So congratulations to you both and you'll each have a prize in your inbox in the near future.</p><p> </p><p> I also want to thank everyone else who have predicted and/or followed my new Quest through the first two pay per views. I'm having a blast with it so far and I really appreciate your support.</p><p> </p><p> And finally...the card for Nitro will be posted momentarily.</p>

Booker gets on the mic and delivers a straight-to-the-point message, saying that as everyone saw last night he's back and he wants the title shot that Eric Bischoff owes him! Booker then looks toward the entrance ramp, but instead of Eric Bischoff, Booker is joined by...</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <img alt="YiAV5xv.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/YiAV5xv.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash. Nash makes his way to the ring, grabbing a mic of his own along the way, and says that since he beat the champion last night, if anyone should be getting a shot at the World Title, it's him. So Booker will just have to take his place in the line and wait his turn.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <img alt="qc8WHPD.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/qc8WHPD.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Booker and Nash are then joined in the ring by Diamond Dallas Page, and he, too, believes that he should be next in line for a title shot, saying that he beat Mike Awesome last night at the Great American Bash. And since Nash has already had his shot, and Booker is just coming back from injury--no disrespect to either of them, but DDP should be getting the next World Title opportunity. With three superstars in the ring all wanting the same thing, Tony wonders just how this is all going to play out, but then...<strong>(B+)</strong></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <img alt="sSiM1MW.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/sSiM1MW.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="9umPviH.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/9umPviH.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> The owner of WCW, Eric Bischoff, and the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, Jeff Jarrett, comes out from the back and stands at the top of the entrance ramp. Bischoff smiles as he says that, while he did enjoy the battle of egos going on in the ring just now, it's time to get down to business. Bischoff begrudgingly admits that he did promise Booker T would go to the head of the line of challengers when he returned, so Booker T WILL get his shot at Bash at the Beach--IF he manages to make it that far. As for Nash and Page...Bischoff says that they can forget all about getting a World Title shot because he's already booked them in a match at Bash at the Beach; a six man tag where Nash, Page and a third partner of their choosing will go up against the WCW Tag Team Champions, Totally Buff, and Mike Awesome! Bischoff then informs Booker that he shouldn't be thinking about Jeff Jarrett at all--he should be more worried about his match later tonight against "The Total Package" Lex Luger! Bischoff and Jarrett then disappear into the back again as Tony and Mike hype up the fact that Nitro has only just gotten started and already we have two huge matches set for Bash at the Beach! <strong>(A)</strong></p><p> </p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="44117" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p> </p><p> <img alt="Z1DlA0N.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/Z1DlA0N.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="O0I3vYs.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/O0I3vYs.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="xwUJi96.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/xwUJi96.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> We then cut to the back where "Mean" Gene Okerlund is with Cash and his new bodyguard, Smooth. Gene questions Cash about Smooth's involvement in Cash's match against Shane Helms last night at the Great American Bash, noting that "Sugar" Shane won't be here tonight due to the injuries he sustained during the attack. Smooth stands menacinly behind Cash as Cash explains that a rare talent such as his needs to be not only nurtured, but protected. Cash says that Smooth is going to make sure that all the people who hate him because of his unique talent won't get a chance to get their hands on him. And as far as Shane Helms is concerned, he should consider himself lucky for having been in the same ring as Cash. Gene tries to bring up the fact that Cash actually lost the match, but Cash just says that he's got important business to take care of and walks off. <strong>(D-)</strong></p><p> </p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="44117" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p> </p><p> <img alt="apBZcci.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/apBZcci.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />vs.<img alt="3WOT8i0.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/3WOT8i0.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Disco Inferno was on the winning side of a tag team match on Nitro prior to the Great American Bash, teaming with Chavo Guerrero Jr. to defeat the WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Billy Kidman, and "Sugar" Shane Helms, and tonight Disco picks up another win against Jamie Knoble. Sanders is once again pushing the idea of getting the Thrillers back together, asking Palumbo and O'Haire if they want to be losers for the rest of their, what is then going to be very short, careers? Or do they want to prove to the world that they are still the hottest up-and-comers in the wrestling business? O'Haire and Palumbo both seem down after failing to capture the WCW Tag Team Championships last night at the Great American Bash, and Sanders tells them that if they get the band back together, they can run this place for years to come...<strong>(C-)</strong></p><p> </p></div><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="44117" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p> </p><p> <img alt="LDtzXls.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/LDtzXls.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />vs.<img alt="IJIxeY2.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/IJIxeY2.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Lance Storm is coming off a big win last night when he earned himself another shot at the WCW United States Championship and he follows it up tonight with a dominant performance against "Screamin'" Norman Smiley. Hell, he thought about everyone on the entire WCW roster until the perfect solution finally came to him. Bischoff says that the team he has picked are going to be just as hungry and desperate for a win as the Steiner Brothers, because just like the Steiner Brothers, their opponents will also be fighting for a WCW contract. Tony also points out the added motivation for the Nasty Boys as they have WCW contracts waiting for them if they win here tonight. This match showcases from great, old school tag team wrestling as the Nasty Boys isolate Rick Steiner and wear him down, but of course he eventually fights back and tags in his brother. The Nasty Boys were able to hold their own against Rick, but "Big Poppa Pump" is on another level and it shows as he dominates both Knobbs and Saggs. Scott then hits a Steiner Flatliner on Brian Knobbs and covers him while Rick makes sure that Saggs can't break up the pin, and the Steiner Brothers are victorious here tonight.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <strong>The Steiner Brothers defeated The Nasty Boys at 10.03 by pinfall when Scott Steiner pinned Brian Knobbs following a Steiner Flatliner (B)</strong></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <img alt="sSiM1MW.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/sSiM1MW.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> The Steiner Brothers have won the match and are still a part of WCW, but Eric Bischoff doesn't look too happy about that as he makes his way out from the back again. Bischoff says that the Steiner Brothers will be in action at Bash at the Beach because they will be facing...Mark Jindrak...Shawn Stasiak...Sean O'Haire...and Chuck Palumbo in a four on two handicap match! Nash then adds that if Booker wins the World Title at Bash at the Beach, he'll know who should get the first title shot. Booker looks good early on though, beating Luger to the punch at every turn, causing no shortage of frustration for Luger. Luger finally does manage to get the better of Booker T by sticking a thumb in his eye and then picking him up and slamming him to the mat. The next few minutes belong to "The Total Package", who takes every shortcut he can find to maintain his advantage, but the tide turns once again as Luger misses a clothesline in the corner and Booker T comes back with a harlem sidekick! Jarrett tries to creep up on Booker, but Booker turns around just in time to come face to face with the man he will be facing at Bash at the Beach for the World Title. Jarrett tries to beg off, but Booker kicks him in the gut, grabs him by the head, and sends him over the top rope and onto the floor! The crowd loves it, but in the mean time, Luger has lined up his running forearm smash and he charges at Booker as soon as Booker turns around...but Booker ducks under it, kicks Luger in the gut and....BOOKEND!!! Great show hot off the back of a great Pay Per View. I'm really enjoying this and should comment more. I'm loving the fact that you have Kid Kash joined up with MI Smooth (almost reminiscent of THE Brian Kendrick and his one time bodyguard who's name escapes me). Kash is great and doesn't get much love in any other dynasties so it's good to see him used here....add that to another guilty pleasure of mine (The Mamalukes) getting used and you'll get nothing but thumbs up from me lol. I know Vito and Johnny get forgotten about a lot, but Big Vito was over like rover in the late 2000's, black singlet Vito was getting a hell of a reaction at one point. Keep up the good work

While I'm at it though, you're doing good work here! That was a creative use of the one night hire feature, and it fit the storyline really well.</p>

<p>The problem with the Mamalukes is that they start the 2001 mods always getting negative reaction notes because they aren't very good workers once they're statted out. But I'm a fan of them as well, and I'm really hoping you can keep the push going for them. Kid Kash is another one who seems to get left behind by a lot of games (typically due to his attitude and poor overness at the start of 2001 games, I would imagine) but he is a very talented soon-to-be veteran who can deliver some exciting matches and promos.</p><p> </p><p>

The Nasty Boys were an interesting pick up, even if only for one night, nobody sure saw them coming!</p>

First of all, thanks for the comments guys. They are always much appreciated.

The Nasty Boys were indeed a one night hire and since both of them appeared to be under the influence of one thing or another during the match, chances are they won't be brought back anytime soon.

I was also a big fan of the Mamalukes so I'd say that you can definitely expect to see more of them. As for Kid Kash, I'm glad you guys are enjoying his push. He was one of those guys who didn't get a fair shake in my previous Quest so I wanted to give him a better shot at it this time around.

Jeff Jarrett - Don't really see Dustin being the new great hope for stopping the Chosen Ones.

Kevin Nash - Nice win to keep Nash on top of things.

Totally Buff - No title change here. Maybe if it were Rey and Kidman, but not Konnan.

Kanyon

Jung Dragons - Just like TFC, you too can give Dragons a chance!

AJ Styles

Shane Douglas - So this is kinda funny, I recently heard a podcast with Tony Schiavone where he was talking about Greed. Tony said that he watched Greed again this many years later, and he barely remembered the show; in particular, "Who the F was Jason Jett?" He said that he definitely remembered AJ Styles, because AJ seemed special, but given EZ just more or less disappeared afterwards, no matter how talented or not he may have found him to be at the time, Tony said he honestly had no clue who he was. I found it amusing.
