Today we look at the remaining teams that will be competing in the March Madness tournament.

 

 

Nate DeMarcus will be teaming up with Pepper Pelton in this year's March Madness tournament. DeMarcus is a rising star in professional wrestling. A former winner of MAW's Sam Keith Classic and in his second reign as MAW Tag Team Champion, DeMarcus brings a lot of tag team experience to the table. While he is in CWI to hopefully establish himself as a singles competitor, he didn't want to be left out of competing in the inaugural tournament. He reached out to CWI management and to "Spicy" Pepper Pelton, who agreed to become his partner for this tournament. Both men possess robust athletic backgrounds and are hoping to gel as a team quickly.

 

 

The team known as Bred for Battle is the second team representing Genesis in the tournament. Made up of sons of gaijin legends Dread and Raymond Diaz respectively, Dreadnought and James Diaz are incredible physical specimens. Both are big, tough, strong ox-like men that could be the top team in professional wrestling. There are rumors around these two that several Japanese companies are interested in their services, but right now the two rookies are in CWI with bright futures.

 

 

Jason Patterson and Matt Blackburn are a young team that formed at Hoosier Hysteria. While they were unsuccessful against Bred for Battle, they were able to earn an entry into this tournament from their showing. They made the decision to start teaming full time and hope to build some momentum as a team in this tournament.

 

 

The final team is a team that has never teamed before -- Zippy Deverell and Prime Time Jack Pryde. At Hoosier Hysteria, Zippy Deverell announced that he would find a partner and enter this tournament -- and he lived up to this. His partner is Minnesota-native and lady-loving Jack Pryde. We don't know what to expect from this team, but with two talented youngsters, they could shock the world!

The past few months had been beyond what I had ever thought possible. There had hit a point in my life where I didn’t believe that I would ever get to book a pro wrestling company let alone promote one. It had been a childhood dream and as I got further into adulthood, it became a dream that I had believed would never become a reality. I had come to peace with that. A lot of dreams don’t come to reality. Isn’t that the curse of being human? We dream for the lives we wish we could have but are, for the vast majority of us, unattainable. We dream of being famous actors or athletes or pro wrestlers or models or musicians or billionaire superheroes. For most of us, those dreams won’t happen. There is only so much to go around. Only so many pieces of the pie. Only so many opportunities. There are plenty of Al Bundy’s out there pining for the days that should have been, but real life kept them from happening.

 

I had resigned myself to being one of those guys. What could have been if I had the book somewhere? What could have been if I had been given the lead play by play position in TCW instead of Jason? Or even the secondary commentary position like Kyle? Why did the Stones like Sam and not me? Those what-ifs had kept me up at night. They had made me question my own ability. Was I not as good of an announcer as I thought? Did I not have the mind I thought I did? Was I fooling myself? Sure, I had had some good ideas. I wouldn’t get credit for some of them -- like the Sam Keith Classic. That wasn’t actually Sam’s idea. It was mine. I loved tag team wrestling. I thought it presented opportunities for unique storytelling. I had pitched a tag tournament to Rip for years, but he wasn’t interested so Jean never ran with it. The pitch to Sam had been better received. Maybe that was because of his tag title reigns with Robert Oxford in Canada. Rip had never been a tag guy. Sam appreciated tag wrestling so the Classic was born, but it had his name on it. I wasn’t bitter -- who would care about a Marv Earnest Classic? Or a Marv Earnest Invitational? People didn’t buy tickets to see me. My name didn’t have value like theirs -- but still…

 

I longed for the opportunities I didn’t think were going to come. A promotion to start and want me to be the ideas man. Something. An opportunity to shine... But years went by and I called more matches and sold more ads and renewed apartment leases and lost significant others because I was still dreaming. I was holding out hope -- and maybe I should have given up hope. Maybe I should have been okay with just being an announcer and an ad salesman. Maybe I should have paid more attention to Patty. Or Becky. Or Laura. But mostly Patty. Becky and Laura were nice, but Patty? I messed that one up bad. She was patient. She was understanding. She understood my peculiarities. She didn’t just tolerate them, she embraced them. She embraced me, but I was so caught up in being more that I forgot to embrace what I had, what was enough.

 

Perhaps I’d be a happier man if I had given up dreaming. Perhaps. I can’t change the past though. They had not yet invented that technology and besides if I had given up dreaming maybe I wouldn’t have gotten the call for Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis. Maybe I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to move from Baltimore to downtown Indianapolis to pursue the dream I’d had the vast majority of my life. If I had accepted what was enough, maybe Patty and I would have a couple of kids and I’d be coaching little league or soccer or going to piano recitals. I’d have more homecooked meals and less Italian and Chinese takeout, but I wouldn’t have ever gotten to find out if I was something other than ordinary. Or maybe I would have, but I’d still be pining for this moment right here.

 

The moment I got to finalize the card for our tag team tournament. It wouldn’t bear my name. I did not want to publicly acknowledge my position in CWI. I didn’t want to be known as the booker or authority or decision-maker or whatever. I wanted to be trusted and respected as the voice of CWI. Sure, with the internet, people knew -- but I wanted them to suspend their disbelief. I wanted my heels to get heat. I wanted my babyfaces to get over. To do that, the company couldn’t be about me or my ego. Couldn’t be about getting myself over. It had to be about them. As much as I selfishly wanted to enjoy everything as my achievements, I knew that it was about them. It was about Conner. It was about Roger and Ace and Billy and and TH and Sam and Zippy and all the others. It was about their ability to carve out a place for themselves in this world that could be cutthroat and vicious. It could be brutal and unforgiving, but it could also fill all those empty parts of a person’s soul.

 

I took another drink from my long neck and looked down at the card once more. It was our third show. Our show -- not my show. We would crown a Women’s Champion on this show. We would crown our first tag champions on this show. We were building something here. Something that I knew I was going to be proud of and something I knew the guys were going to be proud of.

 

For a long time, I didn’t know if this opportunity would come. I dreamed of it. I longed for it, but I doubted it would ever happen. Now here I was. Living the dream I had almost given up on. I guess not all of us are Al Bundy’s.

Awesome stuff! I loved the narrative and really gives Marvin more character. The teams all sound awesome, with Hardcore Inheritance and Bred for Battle being my two favorites. Prime Time is a star in the making, but I'm not sold on Zippy just yet. Can't wait for the show!

Should be an excellent card. The Rock City Stars are solid in the ring and a well-experienced tag team. They'll make excellent first champions for a while before a young team overthrows them. I do think Bred for Battle have the potential to be killers in the tournament. When they meet in that second semi-final, that team will win. My gut tells me Bred for Battle, but my head says Rock City Stars.</p><p>
