Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis returns to action this April with April Showers. CWI management has signed an incredible card filled with high-stakes professional wrestling action sanctioned by the Confederation of the Territories. The Indiana Strangler Conner Threepwood looks to continue his run at the top of the CWI mountain as he puts the CWI Championship on the line against well-known, world-traveled wrestler Toma. Toma has been seen on national television in the United States and Japan and is known for being one American Samoa's toughest exports.

Tribal Warrior will be back in action once again, this time against young heavyweight standout Nate DeMarcus who is looking for the biggest singles win of his career.

After Steph Blake and The Femme Fatales seemed to align themselves last month when Blake became the inaugural Women's Champion, Blake has announced on her social media that they are forming an alliance known as the War Maidens which also includes newly signed and heavily touted prospect Black Diamond. These four women will team up against Suzanne Brazzle -- who is looking for a measure of revenge after her loss last month -- Steffi Chee, who is looking for an opportunity to redeem her early tournament loss, and Ruby Reece & Sabrina Wells who are looking to prove that they are better than a double count out.

All of this and so much more when CWI presents April Showers live at the Fountain Square Theatre.

Author's Note: If you check the company HQ for CWI, you will notice that there are new Women's and Tag Team Titles. These were made by the incomparable Christian Shane (who also made all of the COTT belts that I use.) He's incredibly talented and he has made a couple of other belts for me that you will see unveiled in the next little while in the diary -- but I wanted to highlight the new belts!

Really enjoyed the Connor stuff. Someone else mentioned it, he's a working class hero like Riley was for you previously. I think it's slightly different, because Riley had never had a run in a 'big' company before. Perhaps when Connor gets there again (with you guys of course),he'll be able to turn heel on everyone who supported him on his climb.

Another defense for the hometown champ

Nate "The Great" DeMarcus versus Tribal Warrior

Guessing Warrior's nearing retirement so he's putting others over, this'll probably justify him giving up CWI for good

Brazzle, Chee, Reece, & Wells versus The War Maidens

Dirty finish ahoy, intentional DQ or something like that

If Noggin wins, they get a shot at the CWI Tag Team Titles at Circle City Classic

Stan "The Man" Manna versus Sean Noggin w/ Mark Hyatt

The very stipulation is there to set up a title defense

"American Eagle" Roger Monteiro versus "NextGen" Chip Martin w/ Andrew Gibson

Gibson's boys get a win above, so a loss here. Plus Historian is a known fan of Monteiro :p

If Lilly & Rose Win, they get a future COTT World Women's Tag Team Title Shot

Tex-Mex versus Lilly & Rose

Again, this is to set up a title match. L&R deserve the shot, if not the belts outright

Saturday Week 3, April, 2020

Live from the Fountain Square Theatre [indianapolis, Indiana, Great Lakes, USA]

80 people in attendance (down from 82 last show)

Commentators: Marv Earnest & Honest Frank

qSIrNZu.jpg?1Vaq1dgZ.jpg

Earnest, “Hello everyone and welcome to another exciting night of Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis action. We are a month removed from March Madness where we saw The Rock City Stars win the first-ever March Madness tournament and become the first CWI Tag Team Champions. We also saw Steph Blake defeat Suzanne Brazzle to become the first CWI Women’s Champion -- so you could say that last month was an important month for us.”

Frank, “You could say that Marv, but you could also introduce your damn broadcast partner.”

Earnest, “My apologies. If you don’t know, I’m joined in the broadcast booth by a veteran of the…”

Frank, “Excuse me?”

Earnest, “Well it is honest…”

Frank, “Marv, I swear to God I’ll slap that smirk right off your face. Introduce me right.”

Earnest, “Fine.. I’m joined in the broadcast booth, as always, by my partner in announcing, a legend of this sport, the inimitable Honest Frank.”

Frank, “Thank you Marv and it is a pleasure to be here on this beautiful April evening for April Showers. I can’t wait to see the people shower praise on me after tonight’s broadcast -- but it can’t all be about me. What a card CWI management has put together for the people in attendance and the people watching on DVD or on our website.”

Earnest, “It is a great line up with a lot of potential implications for our May show, the biggest show of our calendar yer -- The Circle City Classic. Will Conner Threepwood head into May still champion? Or will the veteran Toma unseat Conner Threepwood and claim a spot at the top of the CWI mountain? Will Tribal Warrior have secured a big victory over Nate DeMarcus, or will the youngster from Baltimore have jump-started his singles career with a win over a true legend of the sport? What will the women’s division look like after the massive eight women tag team match tonight? There is only one way to find out -- and that’s to go ringside for our first match of the night.”

Lazy Joe versus The Hangman

  • For the first time in three months, The Hangman’s opponent was announced in advance -- the Southern Class Championship Wrestling and Pittsburgh Steel Wrestling veteran Smoky/Lazy Joe. At forty six years of age, Joe is a shell of the man he was in his wild Southern days where he would smoke and drink and brawl and bleed, but he had enough name recognition to get a nice reaction from the crowd -- even with the cigarette dangling from his mouth like this was 2002 or something.
  • The Hangman was as emotionless as ever. The big man from Texas is presented as the embodiment of the Wild West Hangman that Maurice Ogden wrote about. Stoic and severe. He has yet to take a bump. Yet to sell or even register that he’s been hit -- the closest he came was getting eliminated by Java in the battle royal on the first show, but even then he landed directly on his feet.
  • Joe extinguished his cigarette and came out of the corner with fists up. He threw one open hand strike (closed-fists are illegal in CWI). A second strike and still nothing. A third and nothing still.
  • The Hangman stared Joe down with his buckshot eyes and from his motionless state, he exploded with a throat-thrust that sent Joe stumbling backwards. When Joe turned around, The Hangman raised a boot and Joe took it full in the face and took a big bump. Joe staggered back to his feet and got met with a second throat thrust that sent him flat on his back.
  • The Hangman turned his head and looked out at the crowd. He turned back to Lazy Joe and raised a hand above his head. As Joe got to his feet, The Hangman’s hand wrapped around his throat. He lifted Joe high into the air and then let him come crashing down like the floor had given way on the gallows and the Chokeslam did the job.

The Hangman beat Lazy Joe with a Chokeslam in 2:08.

Tex-Mex versus Lilly & Rose

  • Last month, Lilly & Rose made it clear that they wanted an opportunity at the World Women’s Tag Team Championship. They had hoped they would have the opportunity this month, but ACPW booked a Women’s Tag Title match so they drew one of QAW’s top teams in this first-time bout.
  • Houston Handley and Teresa Perez are an experienced team but they also have experience as singles wrestlers whereas Lilly & Rose are pure tag team specialists. Handley and Perez came out like a house of fire. Their lucha-influenced style and experience helped them control the early match with quick tags in and out on Lilly and Rose who definitely looked unhappy with how the beginning of the match was going.
  • After an outside of the ring conference, Lilly and Rose both entered the ring and referee Jez McArthur demanded that Rose -- the non-legal partner exit the ring. While she had McArthur distracted, Lilly cold-cocked Handley. This caused Perez to enter the ring and made McArthur quickly step in front of her and demand that she leave the ring -- and this opened up Lilly and Rose for some cheap double team moves and now Lilly and Rose were in full control of the match.
  • Lilly and Rose worked over Houston -- who sold very well for them. The two women got to look like a world-class tag team. They had some slick double team moves, they pushed the rules of the match to the absolute limit and when Handley made the tag to Perez who made the big comeback with all the fire that she learned working deep in the heart of Texas -- they flew around the ring for her.
  • Perez got the match back under control for Tex-Mex and looked like she had Debbie Rose dead to rights when she tagged in Houston, but Debbie managed to dodge an attempted double team move that caused Handley to hit Perez and Perez stumbled out of the ring. Houston turned around and ate a Thorn Cutter.

Lilly & Rose defeated Tex-Mex when Debbie Rose pinned Houston Handley after a Thorn Cutter in 18:25.

After their victory, Debbie Rose and Kate Lilly grab a microphone.

Rose, “We told you. We told the world that we were going to be the World Tag Team Champions and tonight we took our first step to making those words a reality.”

Lilly, “No disrespect to the women we just beat. They’re warriors, but they aren’t in our league. They can’t lace up our boots. They don’t belong in the ring with us. No tag team on this planet belongs in the ring with us and now we have our shot at the World titles and we will prove it.”

Rose, “So send who you want, COTT. Send whatever team has those belts after tonight. Send whatever team you believe is the best in the world and we will prove you wrong, because the best in the world is standing right here, calling our shot.”

"American Eagle" Roger Monteiro versus "NextGen" Chip Martin w/ Andrew Gibson

  • This match didn’t just come out of nowhere. On Twitter, Andrew Gibson said that Genesis was the premier faction in CWI and if the referees hadn’t been so soft, Bred for Battle would be Tag Team Champions. Roger Monteiro took exception to part of that -- he believes The Dog Soldiers are the premier group in CWI and just had a bad night, so Gibson arranged for this showcase match between the two smaller members of each group.
  • Roger Monteiro is the more experienced of the two, but he’s still relatively young in his wrestling career. Just now thirty years of age, Roger has a lot of miles in front of him and CWI is his first real chance to break out of the independent wrestler pack.
  • NextGen has been garnering some solid heat for using the name Next Gen but claiming he doesn’t want to be judged off of his father’s considerable accomplishments. He made for a good pairing across the ring from the high-octane Cheyenne grappler. This wasn’t a technical match up -- this had a lot of strikes in it and really was a back and forth affair. Neither man was able to control the match for long stretches.
  • Martin had the size advantage over Monteiro -- who had the experience advantage -- and the two played off of that. Monteiro used his eleven years of experience to counter the size and strength advantage of Chip.
  • Gibson did some really good work at ringside helping to add to the heat of the match. When Monteiro got going, he tripped him up on the ropes. He distracted the referee when Monteiro went for a cover.
  • Monteiro had enough and marched over to Gibson who started to flee. Referee Bret Graveson got in front of Monteiro and ordered him back into the ring before turning to Gibson. While Graveson was distracted with Gibson, the big Original Sinner hit the ring from the other side of the building and flattened Roger. Sinner got out of the ring before he could be made and Martin set up -- and then connected -- with the Super Kick to get the win.

Chip Martin defeated Roger Monteiro via pinfall after a Super Kick in 15:28. Match also saw interference from Original Sinner.

If Noggin wins, they get a shot at the CWI Tag Team Titles at Circle City Classic

Stan "The Man" Manna versus Sean Noggin w/ Mark Hyatt

  • The second match with future title shot implications pit one-half of each of the final two teams in the March Madness against one another. Mark Hyatt was not pleased after his team lost in the finals (and rumor is his mother and father put up a lot of money to get this match on the card).
  • Manna has significantly more experience than Sean and for the bulk of the match he controlled the youngster. Stan worked deliberately and this was a definite reverse of the normal formula for a match.
  • There was no shine-heat-comeback. This was mostly Manna punishing Noggin and Noggin occasionally finding a cheap way to gain control. They wanted to make Stan look like a big deal -- and he did -- and when Stan looked like he was setting up for the Rocking Roller, Mark Hyatt climbed onto the ring apron to distract him.
  • Manna turned towards Hyatt -- which opened up Sean Noggin to blindside him and then hit the Hangman’s Neckbreaker that he has started making very feared.

Sean Noggin defeated Stan Manna via pinfall after a Hangman’s Neckbreaker in 9:50 after Mark Hyatt distracted Stan.

Brazzle, Chee, Reece, & Wells versus The War Maidens

  • Seven of these women have been heavily featured on the first three CWI shows. It is clear that Blake has been set up to be a major heel -- she has her own stable now with a young tag team that has been positioned to be the young future of the company. Black Diamond is a hot prospect on the independent scene who Blake is said to have personally recruited.
  • Brazzle and Chee are the two veterans of the babyface side while Reece and Wells are young babyfaces with a lof of potential to be near the top of the women’s division.
  • This was a very solid eight woman tag that was telling the story of Blake being hesitant to get in the ring with either Brazzle or Chee. Brazzle and Chee both wanted Blake in the ring -- but settled for punishing the newest member of the CWI roster.
  • Black Diamond was in the match for the bulk of it -- and she took the bulk of the punishment from the babyface side. Frost and Nemma both looked good and it is clear that Reece & Wells and the Femme Fatales have more to settle than this weight woman tag will solve.
  • Chee hit her Mafia Kick on Black Diamond and got the win. She pointed at Blake and then at her own waist. It’s clear that Chee wants a title shot.

Eight women tag was won by the faces when Steffi Chee pinned Black Diamond after hitting her with a Mafia Kick in 16:53.

Nate "The Great" DeMarcus versus Tribal Warrior

  • The big heavyweight Nate DeMarcus did not look the least bit intimidated by the savage Samoan standing across the ring from him. This was the biggest singles match of Nate’s career. And one that many people questioned him getting after his second-round loss in the tag tournament.
  • This was a hard-hitting affair. High impact strikes that showed off the viciousness of Tribal Warrior and the explosiveness of Nate DeMarcus.
  • While Warrior didn’t take many bumps for Conner Threepwood -- he took several big bumps for Nate -- including an overhead belly to belly suplex that got the crowd out of their seats.
  • Tribal Warrior hit several big forearms and headbutts and looked prime to win the thing before Nate once again exploded and ended up hitting a huge Snap Tackle to get the biggest win of his young career.

Nate DeMarcus defeated Tribal Warrior via pinfall after a Snap Tackle in 9:48.

The big Samoan sits up in the ring. He is sweaty and out of breath. He demands a microphone. He’s not known for being a promo and he kept it very short.

Tribal Warrior, “I quit.”

It was simple but effective. The crowd booed the big man the entire walk to the back.

Toma versus "The Indiana Strangler" Conner Threepwood ©

  • Threepwood’s run of title defenses against national names continued here, this time with Toma. Toma is well known for his six years he spent in SWF and the five years he has spent in Japan with WLW. Primarily a tag team wrestler, the once flashy high flyer has become a much more wild brawler (primarily to mask the effect of injuries on his body).
  • He was a good compliment to Threepwood -- and continued the building of Threepwood as a wrestler’s wrestler and ultimate blue-collar babyface -- a tough-as-nails fighter who doesn’t back down from a challenge and fights back from any beating.
  • Toma put him through a different kind of punishment than Tribal Warrior and Java -- those two were significantly bigger and methodically went after Threepwood, where Toma is wilder and worked a faster, more frenetic pace.
  • Threepwood kept trying to get ahold of him to work him into the Stretch Plum, and Toma kept throwing caution to the wind. He hit a second rope headbutt -- where Threepwood was standing and Toma drove his head into the chest of Threepwood like a battering ram that was particularly nasty.
  • Then Threepwood fired up and launched into an attack of his own. Several big European Uppercuts set him up to smoothly work Toma into the Stretch Plum and Toma was forced to tap out.

Conner Threepwood defeated Toma via submission with the Stretch Plum in 16:43. This was Conner’s third successful defense of the CWI Championship
