Seeing the Montgomery's put up a good match with the Samoans and having another pair advance is awesome to see.

I really like the Montgomery family. I have all of 'em on my roster and I have plans to make all of them featured parts of the roster! I'm a sucker for families in wrestling and having the opportunity to have a whole family at once that are all young? Wonderful. I did change their faces (you can see them on the roster page) to try and give them some more character (on my end(.

Laramee you useless dingus, you screwed the Smacker!

Y'know, a couple of years ago (in game, not in real life), I tried to bring in the Smacker to be my top heel, but he ended up signing a short deal with USPW. He would have probably had a run as CWI Champion -- because Sayeed Ali wouldn't have happened, it would have been the Smacker!

Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis returns to the Fountain Square Theatre for the fifth annual March Madness tournament. The tournament has been going on all month and we are down to our final four teams.</p><p> </p><p>

We have Bred for Battle, the 2021 Winners of the March Madness Tournament and had a year long reign as CWI Tag Team Champions -- the most dominant in history before becoming COTT World Tag Team Champions and having a year-long reign with more defences of the COTT World Tag Team Titles than any other team in history. They have to be the odds-on-favorite to win the tournament.</p><p> </p><p>

Barnaby and Rudge are the reigning IPW Tag Team Champions. They are in their sixth reign as IPW Tag Team Champions and have been widely viewed as one of the top tag teams on the independent scene -- and also currently work for Rocky Mountain Wrestling, making them a well-traveled team that could pull the upset on Bred for Battle and go to the finals and look to add the March Madness tournament and the CWI Tag Team Championships to their portfolio.</p><p> </p><p>

The Samoan Pitbulls have been Tag Team Champions in both hemispheres, they have been one of the most respected teams in wrestling in the last 20 years but they have never won a major tag team tournament. They're incredibly motivated to prove that they still belong at the top of the tag team mountain.</p><p> </p><p>

The Dog Soldiers, former CWI Tag Team Champions are the dark horses in the tournament. The upset the PGHW Glory Crown Tag Champions in the previous round to get to the semi finals, but they are motivated to get back to the Tag Titles they feel were stolen out of them. Ace Youngblood is competing in his fifth straight March Madness Tournament -- will this be the year he leads a team to victory?</p><p> </p><p>

Plus, the World Six Man Titles are on the line and Nicky Champion and Zippy Deverell are finally set to meet in the ring. You do not want to miss this show!</p><p> </p><p>

Saturday Week 3, March Madness 2024

Live from the Fountain Square Theatre [indianapolis, Indiana, Great Lakes, USA]

123 people in attendance (no change in fans from last show)

Commentators: Marv Earnest & Mark Hyatt

qSIrNZu.jpg?1aO4dY56.jpg

Earnest, “Hello everyone and welcome back to the Fountain Square Theatre for another exciting night of professional wrestling action as presented by Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis. Tonight might be the most important night in CWI history. Tonight we present the semi finals and finals of the fifth annual March Madness tournament -- a tournament that has been going on all months and started with sixteen teams. There are four teams left and by the end of the night one team will be able to raise the March Madness trophies and add their name to the prestigious list of people to call themselves champion. Plus, the World Six Man Championships are on the line and in our final of THREE main events, Nicky Champion and Zippy Deverell step into the ring with each other. If the match doesn’t make the ring, both men will be fined twenty thousand dollars by Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis and the Indiana State Athletic Commission. Joining me tonight to call all of the action, my broadcast partner, Mark Hyatt.”

Hyatt, “Finally. Were you going to billboard the whole damn show before introducing me?”

Earnest, “I only mentioned three things on the show!”

Hyatt, “That’s three too many if you ask me. Tonight is going to be a great night. Tonight, Danny Draper is going to send Adam MacDonald, that second rate scoundrel who ran off with fifteen thousand of my mother’s money, to the hills. Bred for Battle is going to show the world that they’re still the most dominant tag team in pro wrestling and Zippy Deverell is going to be officially 2-0 against Nicky Champion. I can’t wait!”

Nebo Martell versus Marcus English

The opening contest was the tale of two different stories. On one side, we had the surging Nebo Martell. The young man has been really impressive the last several months and his stock is rising. Marcus English has been on a slump since Chamberlain left and he went singles. English has not looked entirely comfortable as a singles competitor. This wasn’t a long match and was a match designed to just warm the crowd up and get them ready for an exciting night of pro wrestling. English looked like he was frustrated by the young Martell, who was a step ahead of him at every turn. Martell has good height and a good look and could develop into a star. Martell kept trying to get Marcus English off his feet by using things like a Drop Toe Hold. He wanted to get the Martell Lock and English was trying to get out of it. It was a solid wrestling affair with a lot of holds and counter holds. It wasn’t fancy, but it was two guys competing for a victory. English was able to have control of the match for two minutes that were him focused on suplexes and trying to set up the Tornado DDT -- but Martell was able to counter the Tornado DDT with a Northern Lights Suplex that he then used as an opening to float over and lock in the Martell Lock to force the submission.

In an extremely short match, Nebo Martell defeated Marcus English in 5:17 by submission with a Martell Lock.

Barnaby & Rudge versus Bred for Battle w/ Andrew Gibson

The first of two semi-finals were up next -- the finals of the A block. Bred for Battle against Barnaby and Rudge. These teams have met once before, in IPW when Bred for Battle were the World Tag Team Champions. This had different stakes. Bred for Battle were not champions and Barnaby and Rudge were IPW Tag Team Champions. They came out with their IPW belts so that the fans would recognize them as champions. Andrew Gibson came to the ring dressed in military regalia -- like he was commanding his troops. A different look for Gibson but one that was effective at establishing him as the leader of these two monsters. This was the story of size difference. Barnaby and Rudge the undersized underdogs trying to topple the two monsters that were each 6’6” but moved like men much smaller than them. The beginning of the match had Barnaby and Rudge working against James Diaz -- using their speed on the son of Raymond Diaz to keep him from getting ahold of them. They targeted his knee, trying to keep him off his feet and Diaz even took a flat back bump off of an assisted dropkick -- where Rudge acted as the base for Barnaby to jump off of and get that extra elevation to let his feet kiss the jaw of James Diaz. The crowd was hot for this match, Barnaby and Rudge had good name identity from being on WrestleWorld and that helped make the match feel alive. Bred for Battle took over the match when Dreadnought was able to make the tag and the big man ran through both Barnaby and Rudge. It was all Bred for Battle after that. Dreadnought completely cut off Rudge from Barnaby. He focused on the midsection. He drove his fists and shoulder and knee into Rudge’s ribs. He locked Rudge in an excruciating bear hug. Rudge tried and tried to fight out of it and was eventually he was able to, but when he tried to go make the tag to Barnaby, he was hit with the most vicious German Suplex that CWI has seen -- Rudge landed awkwardly on his shoulder. Dreadnought tagged back in Diaz and Diaz threw several knees into the midsection of Rudge as well and hit a wicked Tilt-a-Whirl Inverted Backbreaker, driving his knee right into the gut. Diaz was able to hit his Asian Thumb Spike -- a poorly named but vicious move where he ran, lept, and drove his thumb right into the throat of Rudge and made the cover and got the victory and advanced to the finals.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and great wrestling, Bred for Battle defeated Barnaby & Rudge in 12:11 when James Diaz pinned Zach Rudge with an Asian Thumb Spike.

The Dog Soldiers versus The Samoan Pitbulls

This was a much different tag match from the first one. Both teams were a bit closer in size -- Akima Toma, and Youngblood are all middleweights with Monteiro being the smaller man in the match. This was a classic tag team match with a really good opening shine where Montero and Youngblood used quick tags and Youngblood really got to show some fire in his opening chops. Youngblood has always had a chop-heavy offense and that was on full display here as he battered Akima and Toma’s chest. Youngblood made the tag to Monteiro and it was when Monteiro was in the ring that Akima threw a chop into the throat of Monteiro that allowed the Pitbullts to take control. They worked physical on Monteiro. Hard forearms and suplexes and second rope elbow drops and offense designed to punish the smaller man. Monteiro takes a grade-A ass whooping, and he took one here. The Samoan Pitbulls are a world-traveled team and they showed what they’ve learned in SWF and in WLW and they hit a wicked move where Toma -- who doesn’t fly much anymore, springboarded into the ring to drop a knee on the upper chest of Monteiro -- who was stretched out over Akima’s knee. Akima did the heavy lifting for his team -- Toma did have two big knee braces on and it was clear that years of abusing his body has left him a shell of the athlete he once was. Akima hit a Samoan Drop on Monteiro that drove the smaller man into the mat with force that should have been generated by a much bigger man. Monteiro was able to get his knees up to block a Flying Body Splash from Toma and that gave him the opening to tag back in Youngblood -- who came in like a house of fire. He was all chops and forearms and uppercuts as he bounced around the ring. Toma and Akima took bumps for him and Ace sent Akima rolling to the floor after hitting him with a running chop to the head. Ace took to the sky and came off with that Flying Tomahawk Chop that he is known for and brought his hand down onto Toma’s skull. Toma took a big bump and Ace got the pin and the Dog Soldiers were in the finals!

In a bout that had fantastic heat and decent wrestling, Dog Soldiers defeated The Samoan Pit Bulls in 15:02 when Ace Youngblood pinned Toma with a Flying Tomahawk Chop.

Black Diamond, Frankie Carmello & The Daughters of Lucha Libre versus Talia Neema, Jessica Conroy, Akari Kawashima, & Ruby Bloodstone

The eight woman tag continued the story of Black Diamond and Talia Neema -- while also trying to get the Women’s Tag champs, rising stars Frankie Carmello, Akari Kawashima and Jessica Conroy on the show. Ruby Bloodstone was here to see what she could do as well. It was a solid, but unspectacular match that was based around Diamond and Neema. Diamond kept trying to get her hands on Neema but Neema was refusing to get into the ring when Diamond was the legal woman. The Daughters of Lucha Libre got to showcase some slick team work and Kawashima got to show some good technical abilities -- she could be a star in CWI if they are able to keep her. She has recently moved to America to work -- having been unable to get a gig with 5SSW and having left WINNOW due to how she felt she wasn’t receiving enough ring time. She and Carmello had a really good exchange that included Kawashima hitting a wicked Tiger Suplex on Carmello. In the end though, it was Diamond finally getting Talia Neema in the ring with her and being able to execute the Belly to Belly Suplex for the victory.

In a decent match, Black Diamond, Frankie Carmello and Daughters of Lucha Libre defeated Akari Kawashima, Jessica Conroy, Talia Neema and Ruby Bloodstone in 9:38 when Black Diamond pinned Talia Neema with a Belly To Belly Suplex.

Ruby Bloodstone was the weak link, struggling to keep up with everyone else's in-ring performance.

"Mississippi Muscle" Adam MacDonald versus "Dapper" Danny Draper © w/ Lucinda Lush

Last month, “Mississippi Muscle” Adam MacDonald was able to win fifteen thousand dollars from Mark Hyatt and beat Ox Mastadon in what was Ox Mastadon’s last appearance for CWI (the big man signed an exclusive deal with NYCW). This month, he had the opportunity to become Indiana Heavyweight Champion but to do that, he had to beat red-hot “Dapper” Danny Draper, who was now joined by his new Executive Consultant, Lucinda Lush (Lush is also the consultant for the entire Cadillac Four). MacDonald is still very green and developing -- but he has the raw charisma and tools to be a major player. They kept the match simple and didn’t do anything that was out of their wheelhouse or extravagant. MacDonald impressed in the early minutes of the match. He was had too much size, too much power, and Danny Draper didn’t have an answer for the power. He did; however, powder out several times to consult with Lucinda Lush. Lush, in her knew role as executive consult, was providing advice on what Draper should do. Draper nodded and listened like he was listening to a coach. He got back in the ring and MacDonald immediately went for a side headlock and wrenched it in. He had a wide base and was working the hold like he was going for a submission. Draper tried like hell to get out of it and finally grabbed a handful of hair to pull MacDonald’s head back which caused his arms to slide up and allowed Draper to slide his head out and launch a straight punch to the face of a turning MacDonald. The whole procedure got Draper admonished by official Andre Lane and Draper apologized profusely but still went on the attack. He focused on the shoulder of the big man -- trying to take out the arm and make Adam MacDonald a one-armed man in a face-pounding contest. Draper hit a Running Knee Lift that he followed up by grabbing MacDonald’s left arm and falling back so that MacDonald’s arm was driven into Draper’s knees. Lush looked very pleased on the side -- like this was exactly what their game plan was. Draper worked an arm bar on the mat, trying to rip the arm out of socket. It was simple but effective. It allowed MacDonald to sell and kept the match slow and steady. Draper hit a Standard Suplex and then came running at MacDonald -- but MacDonald caught him for a huge Spinning Powerslam for a near fall. MacDonald came with the comeback here -- all with his right arm. He hit a clothesline and a one-armed suplex that was an impressive display of power. MacDonald backed up like he was looking for a Running Legdrop, but Lucinda Lush grabbed his ankle and held on -- which caused a distraction for just long enough for Draper to get back to his feet. When MacDonald turned around, he ate a D-Struction and Draper had his fifth title defence.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Dapper Danny Draper defeated Adam MacDonald in 12:17 by pinfall with a D-Struction after Lucinda Lush interfered. Dapper Danny Draper makes defence number five of the CWI Indiana title.

The CWI Women’s Champion, Ashley Keith came out to the ring. She was dressed in street clothes and holding the Women’s Championship. She looked like a champion, like a woman you’d build a division or company around. Standing in the ring, ring announcer/interviewer Taylor Gordy was there for the first time in many months. It was as if his role as interviewer had been forgotten for awhile.

Gordy, “Ms. Keith, last month in this building you were pinned by the reigning All Action Champion, Yvonne Ericks. That can’t have felt good.”

Keith, “Felt good? Of course it didn’t feel good. I’m THE Women’s Champion. I’m not the All Action Champion. No disrespect to Yvonne Ericks, but that’s a second tier championship. I hold the marquee championship for this division. I hold the prize. This prize.”

She holds up the Women’s Championship to Taylor Gordy.

Keith, “And she doesn’t. So no, it doesn’t feel good, Taylor. But you know what’s going to feel good?”

Gordy, “I don’t… What?”

Keith, “Next month when Yvonne Ericks gets her shot at this. My championship. Gets her shot at me. But! She has to put up that All Action Championship of hers and I will win it and I will be double champion and I will retire the All Action Championship so that everyone knows that there is only one champion in this division. Me.”

Gordy, “I don’t think CWI management is going to let you retire a championship…”

Keith, “When I hold both belts, they won’t have a choice. The CWI matchmakers have already agreed to a champion versus champion match. When I hold both, if they want me to defend this… the real prize in this division… They’re going to have to retire the other. I’ll have all the power.”

Gordy, “But what if you lose…”

Keith, “My name is Ashley Keith. It’s not loser. There’s nothing about me that is going to lose. Next month at the Conner Threepwood Memorial, I’ll prove that by winning both belts. Yvonne, I hope you’re ready for the match of your life because for you it will be. For me it’ll just be another Saturday in April. See you there, honey.”

Tag Team Match

Sixty Minute Time Limit

The month of March has been building to this match. The finals of the March Madness tournament and one of three big main events on the evening. These two teams are no strangers to one another. At the very first march madness, Bred for Battle beat Youngblood and Wild Red Stallion to advance to the second round, at the second March Madness, Bred for Battle again beat Youngblood and Stallion -- this time in the finals. Now it was March Madness V and they were once again in the finals -- though it was Monteiro instead of Stallion, but this wasn’t a story about Roger Monteiro. This was a story about Ace Youngblood. The veteran wrestler who carved out a name for himself in Canada and up and down the Eastern seaboard of the United States. A man who was overlooked and underbooked and under appreciated. The fans liked Roger Monteiro -- but it was clear they had a kinship with Ace Youngblood. He had been in all five March Madnesses. He had been eliminated in the opening round, gone to the finals, been eliminated in the first round again, gotten hurt in the fourth one after winning in the first round and now was back in the finals. He had twice been one third of the World Six Man Champions and he had finally won CWI Tag gold only to have it stolen out from under him. The people cared about Ace and when Bred for Battle jumped him at the beginning of the match, they booed. When Bred for Battle pummeled him and didn’t let him up, they booed louder. When he fired up and launched some chops only to be cut off by bully offense -- they almost jumped the barricade. Bred for Battle were perfect here -- James Diaz in particular. He was an absolute bully during the heat. He grinded his forearm into Ace. He choked him and got warned. He let Ace get close to tagging Roger and then wouldn’t let him. Normally Roger takes the heat -- but Ace did here. Ace took a pounding. Several times senior official Bret Graveson checked on Ace and asked Roger if he wanted to give it up, if he thought his partner could continue but Ace begged both men to let him keep fighting. To let him keep trying. Ace ducked under what looked like a massive lariat attempt from Dreadnought and dove into the corner with his hand outstretched. He made the tag and Roger came in hot and fired up -- but it was a false hot tag, because after a couple of offensive exchanges, Roger was cut off and Bred for Battle went back to work, this time on Roger. Dreadnought hit a running splash and then a corner avalanche on Monteiro and Diaz hit a sequence of backbreaker variations on Monteiro. This second heat sequence allowed the fans to start to clamour to see Ace Youngblood back in the match. Youngblood sold on the side of the ring. Sold that he was still in pain but he had his hand outstretched. He was ready to come back in for war. Roger was able to make the tag after his own beating and Ace came in -- ignoring the pain. Ignoring everything as he fired off chops and dropkicks and the crowd came alive moreso. Diaz took several bumps for Youngblood and tagged in Dreadnought and Youngblood went right after him. He chopped the big man hard. He really laid them in. He hit several headbutts and Dreadnought was staggered. Youngblood hit the ropes and came back with a running Tomahawk Chop that staggered Dreadnought some more. He hit the ropes again and came back for another Running Tomahawak Chop and Dreadnought took a big bump off of it -- a rare big bump from him. Youngblood climbed to the top rope and the beautiful held their collective breaths as he came off the top and drove his hand into Dreadnought’s skull for another might Tomahawak Chop -- this one a Flying one. Youngblood made the cover and the referee counted one...two...threee… and the people exploded.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and good wrestling, Dog Soldiers defeated Bred for Battle in 28:05 when Ace Youngblood pinned Dreadnought with a Flying Tomahawk Chop. Dog Soldiers win the CWI March Madness.

James Diaz carried the match in terms of in-ring performance.

Mr. Grappling, US Patriot, & Warwick Good versus Doc Hammond, Americana Jr., and American Flash ©

The second of three main events was for the World Six Man Championship. After the long tag team match that proceeded this -- this was a little bit more action packed, a little bit faster. It wasn’t a spot fest, but it did allow Americana Jr. and American Flash to showcase a lot of their talent. Doc Hammond, the veteran, was in the match the least amount of time for his team, letting the two younger wrestlers go in there and do their thing. They hit some slick tag offense — including lots of slingshot variations, including a very nice slingshot front flip leg drop from Americana Jr. Mr. Grappling took the bulk of the offense from the reigning champions — he was the most polished worker on his team and was able to garner some sympathy. Warwick Good looked off his game in the match — his head must have been other places because it wasn’t on the match. There were a few times where he wasn’t in position for a move or a tag. The match descended into a bit of chaos when Americana Jr hit a big dive onto Mr. Grappling and took Grappling out of the match. Good was in the ring against Doc Hammond but was trying to reach US Patriot to make the tag — except Patriot wasn’t there. Patriot was laying on the floor and Funky Fedora was backing away from the scene of the crime but Kessie Lee Walker never saw the chain-wrapped fist to the back of the head that dropped Patriot. Doc was able to lock Warwick in the Texas Cloverleaf and force the submission.

In an exceptional match, Doc Hammond, American Flash and Americana Jr defeated Mr. Grappling, US Patriot and Warwick Good in 14:52 when Doc Hammond submitted Warwick Good with a Texas Cloverleaf after interference from Funky Fedora. Doc Hammond, Americana Jr and American Flash make defence number four of the COTT World Six Man title.

Warwick Good was the weak link, struggling to keep up with everyone else's in-ring performance.

"Hawkeye" Nicky Champion versus "The Hillbilly Outlaw" Zippy Deverell

The main event of the evening was months in the making. It was Zippy Deverell against Nicky Champion. It was Nicky’s first match since December of 2022. Nicky Champion did not come out in full warpaint for this contest, instead he came out in his standard attire but still the fans were excited to see Hawkeye make it to the ring for his first match in so long. Senior Official Bret Graveson was assigned this contest and the referee from Indiana had to be over the moon getting to ref a match with this kind of hype to it. The opening bell sounded and Nicky Champion came to the center of the ring for a lock up but Zippy Deverell had already slid out underneath the bottom rope. Champion did not looked pleased and demanded Deverell get into the ring but Zippy fired back with a “I have ‘till 10 and I’ll take ‘till 10 if I want.” Which prompted Bret Graveson to start the count. The fans booed and Zippy waited until nine and rolled in but then immediately rolled right back out. The fans booed more. Zippy was toying with them and he was trying to frustrate Nicky Champion right from the beginning. Again Zippy waited until nine and rolled in but again he rolled right back out. Champion was beside himself. He was calling Deverell a coward but Deverell was all smiles. The Hillbilly Outlaw was playing mind games and they looked like they were working when Nicky Champion rolled out of the ring to come get him and Zippy immediately rolled into the ring and hopped to his feet and taunted Champion -- calling him a coward. Champion stood with his fists on his hips. He took several breaths to calm himself before he rolled into the ring. Deverell tried to jump on the attack while Champion was rolling -- but the veteran Champion was ready for him. He caught Zippy’s boot and stood up and Zippy’s eyes were wide and his hands up, begging Nicky to let him go. Nicky spun him around, lifted him up and hit an Atomic Drop that popped the crowd and sent Deverell high into the air clutching his rear end. Champion settled in here. He lifted the Outlaw up and and hit him with a hard knife edge chop and then whipped him into the ropes and when Deverell came back, Nicky Champion sent him ass-over-tea-kettle with a big hip toss. Deverell hit the mat and cried out in pain but Champion was right there to pick him back up and toss him into the ropes and when Deverell came across the ring again, Champion was there for another big hip toss that sent Deverell flying through the air. Champion lifted Deverell up and drove a back elbow into the side of Deverell’s face and Deverell stumbled into the corner. He had his hands up and was begging Nicky to not follow him into the corner. He was begging Nicky to not attack him and Nicky just laughed. He pointed at Deverell and looked at the crowd and they roared with approval. Deverell had been close to a face turn but with his attacks and promos on Nicky Champion, he had gotten himself back into full heel territory and the crowd wanted to see Hawkeye get him a piece. Champion reared back a hand and Deverell immediately ducked in between the ropes so he was technically out of bounds and Bret Graveson was forced to step in between the two men and back Champion off. The crowd booed the tactic by Deverell, but Deverell was all smiles. He had bought himself a moment’s reprieve. He came out of the corner trying to get a cheap shot on Nicky but Nicky kicked him hard in the gut and then hoisted him into the air for a big bodyslam. Deverell got high elevation on the slam and when he hit the mat he bounced up high. He sold the impact. Champion pulled Zippy up -- he didn’t go for a cover after the pinfall because as much as he wanted to win he also wanted to hurt Zippy. He wanted to make Zippy pay for what he did. He reared back a right hand, ready to punch Zippy with a closed fist but Zippy quickly shoved his thumb into Champion’s eye and caused the experienced veteran to stumble back. Zippy quickly went for a side headlock but found himself being hoisted into the air by the stronger Champion. Champion held Zippy up before falling back, driving him into the mat with a hard back suplex that sent Zippy Deverell rolling out of harms way to the relative safety of the wooden floor of the Fountain Square Theatre. Champion once again came out on the floor to get Deverell -- but Deverell, instead of rolling into the ring, grabbed a handful of Nicky Champion’s hair and sent him head first into the steel ringpost. Champion went down hard and Deverell leaned against the apron catching his breath. When Champion came to his knees, his face was covered in blood and Zippy ran at him and drove a knee right into the open wound. Deverell lifted Champion up and rolled him back into the ring. Deverell went for a cover but Champion kicked out at two.

Deverell was in control now. His offense targeted the wound of Champion. He punched at it. He drove a knee into it and he worked headlock variations -- trying to squeeze more blood into the head of Champion in order to squeeze more blood out of the wound. Deverell brought Champion up to his feet and sent him crashing into the corner and then immediately went back to work on the head. He hit a Running Knee Trembler that he followed up with a cover but only got a two count. The crowd was clearly worried about Champion as Deverell went to work. Deverell climbed to the second rope and hit the Southern pro wrestling favorite -- diving fist drop off the middle rope right into the head of Champion. Referee Bret Graveson checked on Champion, but Champion was alert and trying to defend himself and there was no way Graveson was going to stop Champion’s first match back. A ringside doctor -- where an Indiana State Athletic Commission shirt also came up to check on Champion and Deverell demanded the match get stopped by the Commission Doctor said Champion could continue. Deverell lifted a bloodied Champion up and hit the Spinning Bulldog on Champion. The Spinning Bulldog was Deverell’s signature move -- a move that had helped him with the Indiana Heavyweight Championship on three separate occasions. Deverell made the cover and Graveson counted one...two…

Champion kicked out! A big kick out that got the people cheering. Got them roaring with approval as Champion rose up to his knees with blood covering his face. Deverell’s eyes were wide. No one had kicked out of the Spinning Bulldog yet -- except for Mr. Grappling one time. It had been unstoppable and Nicky Champion had just kicked out of it with a bloody face. Deverell came in and drove a closed right hand to Nicky Champion and Nicky stared up at Deverell unphased. Champion shook his head as Deverell drove another punch into Champion and again Champion shook his head but this time Champion stood up. Deverell backed up and moved away and was scared as Champion went into a blood-fueled comeback. Champion drove one fist into Deverell and Deverell dropped. Deverell was back up and a second fist. Another bump and another rise and a third fist. Champion pounded his chest and let out a loud cry. He lifted Deverell up -- high into the air and he held the Hillbilly Outlaw in the air and press slammed him. Deverel collided chest first with the mat and bounced up right into Nicky Champion double underhooking him and hoisting him up. Deverell was upside down and Champion held him there before swinging him down and sitting out with him for the Hawkeye Hammer, a double underhook facebuster, and then a pin for the three count.

In an exceptional match, Nicky Champion defeated Zippy Deverell in 23:17 by pinfall with a Hawkeye Hammer.

No sooner had the bell rang and Nicky Champion announced the winner than Haley Buck led the Taggs out to the ring. The Taggs slid into the ring and immediately pounced on Nicky Champion. The crowd booed heavily as the Taggs just laid into Champion. They hit him with a Spike Piledriver. That gave Zippy enough time to get to his feet and the Taggs lifted Zippy up and held Champion by both arms. Haley Buck screamed and yelled as Zippy undid his belt. He folded it and brought the belt down on Nicky Champion’s back several times. Hard strikes. He was whipping him like a government mule. The leather digging into the sweaty flesh of Nicky Champion, who howled. It didn’t take long for backstage personnel, Rick Sanders and Grace Harper as well as Jimmy Chipolata and Warwick Good to come running to the ring and sending Deverell’s Army scattering.

Yep I agree classic match storytelling. Why can’t any of the companies in wrestling (not sports entertainment) today book interesting stories that make sense and are entertaining? Hey WWE and AEW (and others), why don’t you check these pages out and hire some bookers and get rid of the failed TV writers.

<p>The Redemption of Nicky Champion, Chapter Two</p><p> </p><p>

He ripped open his third twenty-two pound bag of ice from the gas station and poured it into the motel bathtub. The bathtub that he had had expressly cleaned for this reason. With sixty-six pounds of ice in the tub, he turned the water on cold and let it begin to fill. He was sore. More sore than he had been in a long time. It had been fifteen months since his last wrestling match. Fifteen months since he had taken full bumps in front of a crowd. He pulled his t-shirt off of his body and looked at himself in the mirror above the sink. His chest and back were black and blue. He wasn’t in bump shape -- not by a long shot. When he was on top of the world and worked every night, he didn’t bruise from running the ropes or bumping. He had been in the ring a few times to try and work rust off, but there was no substitute for being in the ring and doing the thing live. That was the beauty of professional wrestling. It was done live. One take. He couldn’t take five bumps and then roll out and take a drink of water and a phone call. When the match was going, it was going and tonight with Zippy Deverell they had went. It was a critically successful first match back. Of course all the critics and writers had come to Indianapolis to watch this match. They had a little press room for the press for this. He expected that -- but he didn’t expect Greg to give it C rating, technically a 59, the second highest match he had ever given Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis. NIcky didn’t put a lot of stock into ratings -- he put stock into ticket sales and merchandise moved and all of that -- but it felt good to know that his first match back had been a successful one. He had given Zippy a good match and the kid deserved that. </p><p> </p><p>

Nicky grabbed his cooler filled with waters and Gatorade Zeros -- no sugar or carbs in those -- and set it next to the tub as he turned off the water. He was going to need this ice bath. He needed it to ease his aching body. In his dark days, the days of pills and alcohol, he would have swallowed several Vicodin or Percocets or Fentanyl or Norco and downed them with something tall and cold and drifted off to sleep. Right now, he was jittery. Despite the fact it had been two hours since the match, he was still sweaty. Antsy. His palms were clammy. He swallowed hard. He recognized the signs of a craving. His stomach ached. He was nauseated but didn’t actually need to throw up. It was his nerves on edge. His body trying to get him to relapse, to give in to what had become commonplace for so long. The high that he had chased. He had been sober for just over a year. He still had dope dreams. He had fully detoxed. He hadn’t had a drink or a pill since December 2022. That didn’t stop the cravings. He had sat in both NA and AA meetings. He had worked the twelve steps. He was a stairmaster at this point, but the veterans of the programs told him that it took years to get rid of the physical cravings. The dope dreams might never stop. Many of the old-timers still had them. They still dreamed that they were using or trying to use and couldn’t get it because of some sort of interference. Or they’d get the hit and not get high and then wake up frustrated and sweaty. </p><p> </p><p>

Nicky had replaced alcohol with water and Gatorade zero. Alcohol wasn’t really his drug of choice, but he needed to be free of it to avoid the pills. The pills were his drug of choice. He had never been a coffee drinker so he had replaced his toxic additions with hydration. He had to drink something. He had to have something in his hand. He had tried sweets but he didn’t want the carbs. He needed to stay muscular and fit and didn’t want to take the risk. He unscrewed a water and took a long drink before setting it down and sliding into the ice bath. The water was frigid cold but it needed to be. It was probably 52 degrees Fahrenheit in the water as he sank into it. He could feel his blood vessels constrict or maybe it was all in his head. Maybe he wanted to feel them constrict so his brain was telling him that he was. </p><p> </p><p>

He closed his eyes and sank under the water and suddenly he wasn’t in a motel room next to the Indianapolis International Airport on a Saturday night in March but he was in September of 2011. It was still a Saturday, but instead of being in front of less than 150 fans he was in front of 12,000 in Atlanta, Georgia and he had Tyson Baine up and then down for the Hawkeye Hammer. He got the three count and was once again USPW World Champion. USPW was on the ascent. Sam Strong had taken over and was guiding USPW to heights that were going to eventually overtake the Eisens and Cornell and end up with USPW being sold to a billionaire -- all with Nicky as the face. All with Nicky as the ace. He was going to lead the charge. He was going to be on lunch boxes and backpacks and action figures and video games. He was going to voice cartoon characters in Saturday Morning kids shows and do commercials and endorse cars and cereal and be on Late Night TV with comedians who weren’t as funny as they thought they were and be on sketch comedy shows on Saturday Night that were well based their expiration date for proper cultural relevance. He was on his way to superstardom as the superhero that kids grew up to be. And he pissed that all away.</p><p> </p><p>

Nicky raised his head above the cold water and gasped and reached a hand for the water bottle on the floor. He took another long drink and finished the bottle, dropping it back in the cooler before he sank back in the water and closed his eyes. He was in front of a judge who was sentencing him to probation as part of a plea deal to turn witness against the doctor who was prescribing him enough pills to put a rhino to sleep. He knew the questions the judge would ask, the jury would ask, the public would ask, and he did not fear them. The questions he had to ask himself were an entirely different matter. Those were questions he avoided like a child trying to avoid a bedtime. There was a <em>totika</em> inside of Nicky that no amount of ice baths or cold water was going to put out. Nicky Buffalo Tiger, called Hawkeye. He knew the language of his people. He often thought in the language of his people. The language the used only with each other or themselves. It was easier to confront the <em>Shu-loop-la-pe-thee</em> inside of himself that way. He was a man that had failed. He had failed Allen Packer and Sam Strong. He had failed his fans, both adult and child. He had failed his wife. He had failed his people. He had stood in front of a judge and listened to what he had become and was somber. He knew that penance was a thing he must do.</p><p> </p><p>

Once again he pulled himself back up from underneath the water. His eyes once again open. Staring at the white tiled walls in front of him. His body ached with pains both real and phantom. His soul ached. He had done well tonight. He had bled in the ring for Zippy Deverell. He painted the canvas with his own blood and used it to tell the story of his pain. His redemption was not something he could buy with the money in his bank account. It wasn’t something he could trade a possession for. His redemption could only be bought with his own blood and sweat in an eighteen by eighteen square in front of the crowds that wanted to believe in him again. That was the price he had to pay and he was willing to pay it. He lifted up a Gatorade Zero and unscrewed it to take a long drink. He was the sum total of where he’d been and what he’d done and he’d done a lot of good and been a lot of places but he’d subtracted a great deal from that total and it was time to refill the coffers. Even if it took every drop of blood and sweat in him, he would redeem himself. He would earn their forgiveness. He’d earn her forgiveness. He’d earn his own.</p>

Why can’t any of the companies in wrestling (not sports entertainment) today book interesting stories that make sense and are entertaining? Hey WWE and AEW (and others), why don’t you check these pages out and hire some bookers and get rid of the failed TV writers.</div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Hey, thanks guys!</p>
