On an aside, I did update the look of the champions page, removed the roster page and moved the COTT page down in the table of contents. I gave the show index, graduates, and hall of fame their own page so that they stand out more as I have some ideas with what to do with them as we go on and I want to be prepared for those changes.

Nicky Champion came to the ring to start the show and cut a promo hyping up his match next month with Zippy Deverell. Since Champion arrived in Decemer of last year, Zippy Champion has been a thorn in his side -- and Nicky Champion is ready to teach Zippy a lesson once and for all.

The Texas Express came to the ring. Two weeks ago they lost the World Tag Team Titles to the Ring Generals -- who were not in the building tonight. They felt like they were cheated, if it wasn’t for Lucinda Lush and Danny Drapper, they’d still be World Tag Team Champions and they want to get those belts back. They were interrupted by the reigning CWI Tag Team Champions, The Dynamite Express, who think that the Texas Express were just complaining and needed to get to the back of the line. The Dynamite Express has never received a World Tag Title shot and they want one and they’ll beat Texas Express next month to earn a shot!

Sandman Winks, former MAW star who was rumored to be coming to CWI in exchange for Texan Justice, hit the ring with a steel chair. He was able to hit Dannny Draper with it but the other three members of the Cadillac Four bailed out of the ring and then pulled Danny out while Sandman protected the downed Mr. Grappling.

This guy is money. I hope you have huge plans with him.

Congrats on your recent success. I cannot wait to see HPW rise.

It seems that one of your graduates, Victor Crash, might be under the US Patriot mask now. And we all know that you have a thing for this kind of characters.

The summer heat was oppressive even with the sun down. The air was heavy and sticky and even standing on my small balcony I felt like I was going to start dripping with sweat. Indianapolis wasn’t a place one immediately assumed was humid, but the humidity here in the summer could knock you off your feet. I exhaled smoke from my cigar into the still air and watched it float there with no wind to blow it away it hovered before dissipating into nothing. I wasn’t much of a smoker, but I enjoyed the occasional night time cigar and if there was ever a night to light up a Padron 50th Anniversary cigar tonight was one of those nights. A Padron and a glass of William Larue Weller and it was a proper celebration. Somewhere behind me in the apartment over our headquarters, Grace was doing something in the kitchen. I wasn’t sure what but the scents meeting me out here were wonderful. I was in for a treat.

I sipped my bourbon -- bourbon that cost more than I should have spent on a bottle of anything -- and looked across the way. I could see the Fountain Square Theatre from my balcony. From the venue that had been our home. The venue we had passed two hundred fans in in June and then almost hit two fifty at God, America, and Pro Wrestling. After that show, WrestleWorld had reached out to me. We were finally big enough. Finally good enough for them to want to broadcast our shows. Sure, we had to raise our production levels. I was worried about that. We were going to be broadcasting our shows live and that was going to be a different beast. I had never done that before. I had never been involved in a live broadcast of any sorts in pro wrestling -- I wasn’t sure how to do that and I was nervous about that, but I was relieved.

It had taken four years and seven months to get to this moment. I had booked and ran 137 shows to get to the moment where I could walk into a building for a live broadcast. We had done it. Even with Canada waging a steady war on our talent. Even through a recession and a depression in the industry. Even with GSW and QAW and NYCW coming for talents on our roster. Even with the COTT giving me scraps, barely letting the World Champion come to town and overbooking the World Tag Titles (though they had given them to me) so that I couldn’t use my own talents. Even with all of that, we were standing on the precipice of greatness. We were going to do TV. We were going to do studio TV but modernized. We were going to do so many things.

I took another puff on the Padron and exhaled before sipping the Weller once more. I felt a surge of pride as I felt the warmth of the bourbon course through my body to my extremities. I had always been overlooked. I was the pudgy announcer from the East Coast that wasn’t telegenic enough for the Eisens or Sam Strong or Hollywood enough for J.K. and then I wasn’t Tommy’s boy. I wasn’t a sexy hire. I wasn’t over-dramatic and I didn’t yell with a microphone in my hand. I told stories. I called matches. I was a play by play announcer and no one had wanted to give me an opportunity on television. Rip and Stomper had given me chances on their video releases, but that wasn’t the same thing. I had always wanted to be on TV. To call it live. To walk that tight rope and I hadn’t been given the opportunity. I had always been rumored for a booking job but never given one. Always the lieutenant. Always the helper. Five years ago I had bet on myself and now I was about to eat a meal cooked by a woman who loved me -- with no real explanation as to why -- while drinking an expensive-ass glass of bourbon and smoking a top-shelf cigar with the knowledge that I had guided my own ship to this point.

When I had agreed to helm Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis, I had done so with the mantra that we would not be ordinary. No ordinary men. That was the mantra. We had been anything but ordinary and now we were taking the next step. I was taking the next step. My next event, I would be calling live on WrestleWorld and then we would be recording television and I would finally be a television broadcaster. We would be known as Heartland Pro Wrestling now. A place to represent middle america. The Central States. The Great Lakes and Mid West -- those underserved areas that we would bolster up and present as a place to go for pro wrestling.

“It’s ready.” Grace called out to me and I finished my bourbon and snuffed the cigar so I could relight it with an after-dinner cocktail. It had taken me four years and seven months to get here. I had been kicked around and lied to and disrespected and I had taken it all with a public smile, but HPW… no… Marv Earnest was coming. I was going to leave my mark on this business and I was going to make sure that Canada knew my name. That Larry respected me. That Farrah respected me. They might have thought I was an easy mark, but times they were a changing… I was about to prove that.

Love the big news on the new deal with WrestleWorld. I also like the old school feel of the big 4 events roughly every quarter. This allows for more long term story building and creating excitement (something your good at) and great builds to shows to make them mean even more.

Good luck with the expansion

First, thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you feel that I'm able to create stories outside of the title scene -- it is important to me to give my big names things to do other than just be there so I try to come up with long term plans for all of my top stars and build intersections/crossovers/transitions so they can move from one thing to the next. I'm really looking forward to booking the TVs -- it will be a new challenge as I only have an hour for each show and it's a 60/40 split between matches and angles, but I have some ideas with how to do it and how to build to arcs that culminate on TV and at big shows.

I'm a big fan of our tag scene. I love tag team wrestling and I always try to have a robust tag division. With the loss of the roster page, I can put the names of the guys after their team name, absolutely!

Nebo Martell & Adam MacDonald versus The Taggs w/ Haley Buck

This was a very physical match that really was designed to continue to get the Taggs over as wild brawlers, the heir-apparents to the McWades or the Peaks. They were fists and elbows and kicks and headbutts and Nebo and Adam fought vailiantly back against the Taggs, but ultimately they were not up to the challene as a Spike Piledriver to Adam MacDonald got the three count and the Taggs a big victory.

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, The Taggs defeated Nebo Martell and Adam MacDonald in 7:56 when Wolfie Tagg pinned Adam MacDonald with a Spike Piledriver.

Nate DeMarcus came to the ring and talked about his match last month against Bred for Battle. US Patriot was injured pretty severely and Nate wasn’t sure when the kid would be able to wrestle again. He was sad to announce that but also said that he wasn’t done with Bred for Battle, not after what they did to US Patriot and he was looking for a partner to help him take them on. That’s when The Bad Man himself, Warwick ood came to the ring and told Nate that he would be his partner, that he would help him in this fight.

"Indiana's Finest" Mr. Grappling versus "Dapper" Danny Draper w/ Lucinda Lush

This wasn’t the first time these two men had met in the ring and it was a good, solid affair. Grappling has cemented himself as a fixture of the CWI roster. Draper has established himself as a quality heel and an important cog in the Cadillac Four. Lush was great at ringside -- she’s really blossomed in her role as the Executive Consultant in the Cadillac Four and her and Draper in particular have great chemistry. Grappling controlled most of the match with suplexes and holds -- living up to his Grappling name. Several times he tried for the DDT that Rip Chord (his hero) made famous, but Draper drove him back into the corner several times to break the grip around his neck. Draper hit a big jumping knee to the face that stumbled Grappling. Draper went for the D-Struction but Grappling countered by sweeping the legs out. He slingshotted Draper into the corner and Draper bounced out and Grappling went for the DDT, but this time Draper pulled the legs out of Grappling and moved into a pin as Draper used his feet for leverage on the ropes and got the three count and stole a victory.

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Dapper Danny Draper defeated Mr. Grappling in 11:32 by pinfall while using the ropes for leverage.

Yvonne Ericks & Black Diamond versus Daughter's of Lucha Libre ©

The Women’s Tag Team Titles were on the line -- one of three title matches on the show. Yvonne Ericks was looking for the illusive hat trick -- if she and Black Diamond won tonight Yvonne would be the first woman to have won all three women’s titles -- she would also be the first person in CWI history to hold three championships at one time. The Daughters of Lucha Libre have had an okay run but they haven’t been able to get a lot of traction as champions. This was a high-energy, action-packed tag match with all four women working a quick pace. All four women are also crowd-favorites so this was an open affair with all the women getting an opportunity to shine. The Daughters of Lucha Libre hit several slick double team moves -- including an assisted Tornado DDT. In the end though, Yvonne Ericks caught La Hija de Phoenix under the chin with a Mafia Kick and suddenly Yvonne Ericks and Black Diamond were Women’s Tag Team Champions.

In a bout that had great heat and decent wrestling, Black Diamond and Yvonne Ericks defeated Daughters of Lucha Libre in 14:33 when Yvonne Ericks pinned La Hija de Phoenix with a Mafia Kick. Black Diamond and Yvonne Ericks win the CWI Women's Tag Team titles.

Yvonne Ericks carried the match in terms of in-ring performance.

"Hawkeye" Nicky Champion versus "The Hillbilly Outlaw" Zippy Deverell

Nicky Champion and Zippy Deverell were up next and the fans were clearly ready for this contest. This has been the most heated rivalry of 2024 and the fans were into everything they did. Much like their first much, Nicky Champion controlled most of the match with Zippy playing the role of the chickenshit. Zippy tried to get away from Nicky -- including trying to go under the ring. Nicky slammed Zippy several times -- but Nicky also refused to used a closed fist. He couldn’t break the rules or cheat but Zippy could and he threw a short closed fist right into Nicky’s jaw that stumbled Nicky backwards. Zippy then hit Nicky right in the throat and senior official Bret Graveson warned him that if he kept this up he was going to be disqualified. Zippy sent Nicky head-first into the turnbuckle and then started kicking at Nicky to get Nicky off of his feet. He choked Nicky with his foot. Graveson was all over Zippy about the rules, but Zippy was a man possessed. He backed off and as Nicky stood up, gasping for air -- Zippy went back on him. He threw several forearms into Nicky’s jaw before pulling him away from the corner. He hit a Snap Suplex and then immediately hit a leaping knee drop into the upper chest of Nicky. Nicky was in a world of trouble, unable to get a breath. Zippy kicked Nicky in the breadbasket and then hit the ropes and hit the Running Knee Lift for a near fall. The fans were beside themselves and as Bret Graveson checked on Nicky to make sure he could continue, Zippy undid the corner pad covering the top turnbuckle. Zippy pushed Bret out of the way and whipped Nicky across the ring into the exposed turnbuckle and Nicky went in chest first (the old Bret Hart bump) and stumbled back and dropped down clutching at his chest and sternum. He even rolled out of the ring trying to catch his breath and Zippy taunted him. Zippy was in full heel mode and the fans were eating it up. Nicky was able to get in the ring before the ten count and Zippy immediately grapped him and hit a Lungblower for a two count. The fans were begging Nicky to find his wind, to be able to get back into the fight. Zippy gripped Nicky Champion’s head and looked like he was going to hit the Spinning Bulldog, but as Zippy started to spin, Nicky countered the weight and used the momentum to hit a Bossman Slam for a near fall. Nicky laid on the mat for a few seconds taking deep breaths. Nicky got back to his feet and let out a War Cry and Zippy did the classic heel beg off. He had his hands up and was screaming “No” as Nicky closed in. Nicky hit several chops and then a hip toss and then a running chop. Nicky was in his full comeback and Zippy was in full sell mode. Zippy flew. He flopped. He made everything look like he was getting his clocked cleaned. Nicky had Zippy set up for the Hawkeye Hammer when suddenly there was a commotion

Wolfie Tagg was down and he was engaging with referee Bret Graveson. While Graveson was distracted…

pi2WXKO.jpg

Kalder Tagg came in from the otherside of the ring and with a fist wrapped in a belt -- with a big Rancher’s belt buckle over his knuckles, Kalder Tagg blasted Nicky Champion in the back of the head. Kalder immediately rolled out of the ring as Zippy grabbed a slumped Nicky Champion and hit a Spinning Bulldog on him and when Bret Graveson turned around, Zippy had the pin and Graveson counted, much to the dismay of the crowd, the one, the two, and the three and Zippy Deverell had just pinned Nicky Champion!

In an exceptional match, Zippy Deverell defeated Nicky Champion in 24:10 by pinfall with a Spinning Bulldog following interference from Wolfie Tagg & Kalder Tagg.

Before it could really get settled in…

The Texas Express versus The Dynamite Express ©

The Tag Team Title match was the semi final contest and pit two teams that both graduated from the Mid Atlantic Bootcamp against one another. The Dynamite Express has held the tag titles since February (and are in their second reign) while the Texas Express just lost the World Tag Titles in June and are looking to reclaim their spot as the number one tag team in the world. This was a classic-style tag match that saw the Texas Express control the early portion of the match with a variety of high impact moves, including a back suplex/neckbreaker combo that set the tone for the high energy tag match that this was going to be. The Dynamite Express had to cut off Turk and put the heat on him. They kept Cooper out of the ring -- they cut the ring in half and used quick tags to keep the freshman in. They focused on the knee of Turk -- including a great move where Cam Jones had Turk in a knee bar, reached up and tagged Syd, and Syd Collier came off the top rope with a stomp right to the exposed knee and leg. Everything the Dynamite Express did came back to working on the knee of Turk Trenneman -- and Turk sold it like they were trying to cripple him -- like they were trying to amputate his leg. The Dynamite Express even did the classic Figure Four Leglock around the ring post and broke just before five and while Syd was arguing with referee Andre Lane about it, Cam Jones locked it in again and held it for much longer than five seconds and really drew the heat of the fans. Cam released the hold right as Syd stopped arguing with the official and Cooper was going crazy on the sideline. Syd went for the pin and got a near fall and then lifted Turk up. He bent Turk’s leg and angled so he could run forward and drive Turk into the ringpost knee-first. Turk grabbed at his knee and Syd looked like he was going to lock in the Figure Four Leglock, but Turk used his non-injured knee and pushed Syd into his own corner. Syd made the tag to Cam though as Turk started crawling towards Cooper who was begging for the tag. Cam grabbed Turk’s injured leg right as Turk got to his feet to dive to Cooper. He yanked on it to spin Turk around but Turk spun with his hand out and caught cam in the temple. Turk dove into the corner and tagged Cooper and Cooper came in like a house of fire. Cooper used big right hands and dropped both members of the Dynamite Express. He tossed Cam into the ropes and hit a big Sidewalk Slam. Syd came in illegally and Cooper caught him with his picture-perfect dropkick and Syd took a huge bump off the dropkick. Cooper tossed Cam back into the ropes and then tossed him through the air with a big Hip Toss. Cam sold it like he was in a world of pain. Cam bounced up to his feet and Cooper caught him with a big Body Slam. Cooper looked great and he looked over at Turk who was standing with one leg. He had a hand out, ready for the tag and Cooper pulled Cam Jones over to the corner. He tagged in Turk and they looked like they were setting up for their Texas Rising finish, but Syd Collier tripped Cooper Christie and yanked him out of the ring and dropped him with a hard right hand. In the ring, Cam Jones rolled up Turk Trenneman and grabbed a big handful of tights to steal the victory.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and great wrestling, The Dynamite Express defeated The Texas Express in 19:49 when Cam Jones pinned Turk Trenneman with a handful of tights. The Dynamite Express make defence number four of the CWI Tag Team.

Sandman Winks versus Funky Fedora © w/ Lucinda Lush

The main event was here. Former MAW wrestler Sandman Winks made a big splash when he arrived in June and at God, America, and Pro Wrestling he made Danny Draper go to sleep in his Deep Sleep. Tonight, Sandman Winks had the opportunity to become Mid American Champion in his first singles match against Funky Fedora. Sandman was sporting a new look -- with his hair trimmed up and his face shaven, but he looked like a million bucks, especially with his ripped physique. Fedora was almost to twelve full months as Mid American Champion and this would prove to be a very tough challenge. The match started off with a collar-elbow tie up and Winks pushing Fedora back against the ropes. Winks is a bigger wrestler than Fedora (Fedora weighed roughly 240 pounds while Winks was about 265) and the twenty-five pounds had to be all muscle. Sandman controlled the match -- consistently working for his Deep Sleep variation of the sleeper hold, and Funky Fedora consistently finding a way to wrestle his way out of the hold. He used the ropes, he took powders out of the ring, he hid behind Lucinda Lush -- he did everything he could to keep out of The Mayor of Muscle Mountain’s grasp. They were really good opponents for one another -- Funky took a big bump off a back body drop that sent him flying through the air and when Funky finally was able to seize control of the match after a Lucinda Lush distraction, Winks sold for the champion. Funky pepper Sandman’s chest with stiff knife-edge chops and then he worked on his neck. He drove his elbow into Sandman’s neck multiple times and hit him with multiple neckbreakers -- really trying to weaken him for either the Top Rope Knee Drop or the Slingshot Back Suplex. He was able to hit a Standard Back Suplex without the slingshot for a near fall and then Sandman started firing back. The big man from Florida hit a nasty looking pendulum backbreaker for a near fall and then went to lock in his Deep Sleep. Fedora ran towards the ropes and ducked down -- which sent Sandman chest-first into the ropes. Sandman bounced back into Funky’s arms and Funky lifted him and then bounced him off the top rope and came falling backwards for a Slingshot Back Suplex that got Funky the successful title defense in a very competitive match up.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and good wrestling, Funky Fedora defeated Sandman Winks in 21:55 by pinfall with a Slingshot Back Suplex. Funky Fedora makes defence number four of the COTT Mid American title.

“Doors open in fifteen minutes.”

I nodded absent-mindedly to whoever was telling me that. It might have been Andrew or Andre or Taylor or it could have been one of the hired-on production crew helping to put together these tapings. I wasn’t the Eisen Family or Allen Packer. Hell, I wasn’t even Gil Thomas or Brother Grimm. I couldn’t afford a full-time production staff of my own so I had to hire one. That was fine though. They were a local crew that had filmed some independent wrestling before but also a lot of high school and local collegiate sports for the colleges that weren’t D-1 and didn’t get big-budget coverage. They knew how to shoot sports and it wasn’t like we were doing a hard set up. We had the hard cam and two roaming cams and an overhead cam.

This was a new building for us, for me, and I still wasn’t sure how I felt about it. Center Stage at Studio 65 was a nice setup. It had bleacher-seating on three sides where about 200 fans could fit if we sold the place out. The side that wasn’t bleacher had the announce desk, the interview area and the little entranceway. It was old-school studio wrestling and no one was doing that anymore. Even Sam in Baltimore was filming a regular pro wrestling show out of Stanley Hall. Even Larry with his ultra-old school mindset. We were going to do studio stuff. Promos and squash matches but with competitive matches in the main event. We still had to pop ratings and draw numbers but we weren’t going to bring out our stars to wrestle every night. I didn’t want to overexpose anyone. I wanted to build to our quarterly big events and I wanted to have occasional big episodes of TV.

I reached for the glass of water in front of me and took a long drink. I was going to have to piss before we rolled cameras, but in just a minute I was going to have to dip behind the curtain and make sure we were going to be good to go.

“Nervous?”

I looked up and Grace stood there with a smile on her face. She was dressed to be on camera in a sharp pants suit. It was dark colored with a yellow flower in her lapel which would go nicely with my yellow tie for the debut tapings. She was going to be my color analyst for Wrestling Spotlight. I had been working with Mark Hyatt for our DVDs and VODs but I didn’t want to go on TV with Marv and Mark -- I thought that would be too confusing. Plus, Mark had gone to school for broadcasting -- he had specialized in radio, but he understood cues and stuff. He had a degree and that had to count for something so he could be at our control position to call out time cues so Rick could deal with talent and help keep things moving.

“Yeah.” I told her. I couldn’t lie to her. She could read me like a book anyway.

“Me too.” She said with a smile. “I’ve never called live TV matches.”

“Me either.”

“So it’s a first for both of us.”

“Yep.”

“At least we get to do it together.” She reached over and squeezed my hand. I couldn’t help but smile. She was my anchor through all of this. As I wrote and rewrote the shows trying to get the format down pat. We were taping four shows tonight. Four shows in one fell swoop. It was going to be a crash course.

“I just don’t want to f**k this up.” I said softly so only she could hear me. She leaned forward, just close enough that I could catch a whiff of lilac.

“So what if you do? It’s only our first one. There will be more. We’re here now. You’re here now. You’re not just a local promoter anymore. This is the real deal.”

I exhaled and nodded and looked around once more. We were about to open the doors to file in for our first taping of Wrestling Spotlight. I was going to call four episodes of television tonight right next to the woman I loved. I was going to bring my vision of what pro wrestling should be -- stripped down from a production value. Not in a twenty-thousand seat arena, but a 200 seat theatre stage. Intimate. No cartoon characters or outlandish stuff. Wrestlers that felt real. Like people you might know. Might interact with. Athletes with personal issues between them. With championship aspirations. A dramatized sport. Conflict. If we pulled it off, we would be different enough to stand out while being familiar enough that old and new fans a like could fall in love with the sport of pro wrestling. If we pulled it off, Nicky Champion and Funky Fedora and the Dynamite Express and the Texas Express could use their national exposures to elevate Zippy Deverell and Nate DeMarcus and Sandman Winks and Mr. Grappling and all the guys and gals in the locker room who were salivating at the chance to make names for themselves.

“I didn’t think we’d make it here.” I told her as I took another look down at my papers. My formats for the shows. Everything we were going to be taping tonight.

“Well tough shit, because you’re here now. They’re going to open doors. Let’s get back there and make sure your troops know what they’re doing. We only get one first chance.”

She was right. I collected my papers and we crossed across the floor to the curtain. I turned back to look at the ring. It was lit up so that it was the focus. When we did interviews, we’d light the interview area. Everything happened out here. This was the focus. I had failed at a lot of things in my life. For years, I had failed to get a job in the big leagues. Failed to become a booker. Failed to be a quality lover and significant other. I had let family and friends down because of my singular obsession with this sport but tonight… In less than a hour, I would walk back out here and sit down at the broadcast table and I would call pro wrestling action like my life depended on it. I had been ordinary for fifty years. I had been just some guy but tonight that would all change.
