[HYPE] The YES! Mod - May 2013

Recommended Posts

I can't wait for this one to be finished. Really excited to try this mod

Great to hear (or read, I suppose). Its a fun time-period.

So small update, I guess.

The feedback I've been getting has been excellent and adding some polish. I won't out the individual as I haven't okayed it with them, but their assistance is highly appreciated. The tweaks have resulted in me running more tests soaks than I should be at this point (more on that). Main focus remains on adding workers and converting things over to TEW 2020.

My list of to-add active wrestlers is around 370 names long. Its not an exhaustive list and I'm sure there will be plenty more I need to add, but at least it provides something of an end zone that I can see. I'm guessing probably 50 of those won't go into the data, at least right now. Almost all of these are lower-level workers, which sounds rude, but they are semi-active veterans, talent who were years away from making any impact, talent that mostly worked for low-level companies that aren't in the data, and some who worked a small bit for a company that is in the data (like they worked 3 ROH dates or something at some point). I'll put it this way - I'm having to do a lot more cuts lately for these workers than I was before. They are easier to skill and generally don't have long work-histories to worry about. But some are obscure enough that I will probably hold off on adding them and may not add them at all unless there is some specific value they bring in. I was thinking the mod would be around 2000 active workers (plus all the yet-to-debut workers) but it will be well over that. I'm guessing somewhere in the 2200-2400 range, with another 400-600 yet-to-debut talents.

Apros nothing, but I checked this morning and there are 160 refs in the data - I will blame Mammoth for that, since he gave me great info on a lot of refs in Japan and Mexico, and I wanted to make use of it. There will still be more refs going in, and there are still quite a few broadcasters, non-wrestlers, and road agents that need to go in. Road agents, in particular, are a pain because its so hard to know who fulfills that role for companies. So a lot of veterans will be set to be road agents, which is what a lot of mods seem to do to cover the indy scene for road agents. Very open to suggestions on who can be used as a road agent....

I've also been picking away the other pieces that are still incomplete. I tend to bounce around and tackle different things, depending on how I'm feeling at a given moment. These other pieces include all the optimizing pieces for the switch to 2020 - Attributes, products, contracts and so on. I've also been creating schedules for companies - DDT, Stardom, and Oz are now on the list of "complete" schedules. I have to do a lot of the non-Japan companies, however.

In regard to testing, I've said before (I think) that I'm trying to avoid testing too much just yet. Testing and tweaking is a whole process unto itself and I don't want to focus on that. The suggested tweaks I've been getting have resulted in me testing a bit anyway. Part of the reason I don't want to test yet is that not everyone has complete rosters yet, but the big companies do so that's mostly where I've paid the most attention to. Some things I've noticed...

  • WWE grades are around where I think they should be. I have seen them drop to Medium on some tests, but its not a consistent thing. They often maintain their size and push toward the next step up. They were putting on a lot of high-level (90+ grade) matches, and a bit too many of those were classics (98+). That resulted in a product tweak....
  • New Japan tends to get strong grades. As mentioned before, this doesn't
necessarily feel unrealistic. But to keep them from having 20+ 99 or better matches a year, I also tweaked their product. The company grows to high-80s popularity in Japan based on those strong grades, but they don't seem to go past that and they don't really expand outside Japan.
  • AAA ends with a lot of popularity in the US due to the TV deal there.
  • A couple puro companies struggle to make money - notably Noah. But they don't tend to do die, so that looks solid to me.
  • DG is in better shape after some tweaks. I do need to adjust some of their contracts.
  • I have YouTube as free-to-air Internet with specific ones for each game region, but everyone and their dog end up exploiting that. I might location-lock them and possibly up the requirements a touch. This - and broadcasters as a whole - will definitely need testing and tweaking.

In terms of the product tweaks, I had New Japan as Strong Puroresu but have adjusted them to Classic Mainstream Puroresu. That allows for the realistic western elements they have, and seems to have slowed the march of all-time classic matches just a touch. The WWE went from one of the variations of Sports Entertainment to Wrestling Soap Opera. The results are encouraging. I'd rather adjust the product than nerf the workers, which is honestly what I did with NJ a bit to start (some of the tweaks being suggested are addressing just that). so question... does anyone feel like the 2013 period would be massively unrealistic to have NJPW capable of churning out regular 4-star matches (90+) on even tour shows and the WWE capable of putting on a handful per year?

I don't think you can avoid the 90+ matches on tour shows. The game just books in a way that makes that impossible. I think some overall nerfs wouldn't be the worst idea though. Lot's of the top wrestlers were still years away from their peaks in 2013. WWE should be having a few 90+ matches a year. That was certainly the case in 2013. Unfortunately there is no way to emulate Brock Lesnar and Triple H being used in a very limited wrestling role. But if they were used in the way the game uses them, I guarantee WWE would have plenty more 90+ matches. You cant fight the game on some things. As long as the long term growth seems reasonable it should be good. It already looked solid a month ago even. Keep it up!

Same here. The YES! Movement was a lot of fun and the culmination at 'Mania 30 is one of my favorite moments as a fan.

Its a great period to redo in the WWE. Beyond DB and the Yes stuff, you had Shield in is early days, Wyatt family, trying to keep Punk, building up NXT, revamping the women's division, launching the network in 2014.... And that's just in the E.

Yeah, it bothers me a bit but I also fully understand that with so many variables in play, you can't control everything to get the exact outcomes you want. Even if everything was "perfect", you can still have the AI pair up two tremendous wrestlers and churn out 99+ grades every week in a test save. Which it did on one test by teaming Tanahashi and Nakamura. Or having a mediocre worker be in a 100 match because they worked a match with a great talent - which happened with Santino Marella when he had a TV match with DB. Every test save has something along these lines and you can manage some of them but not everything.

I'm not tweaking to limit things or nerfing anything yet. Prefer to avoid that but we will see how things play out as we get further into the process. Like you say, its moreso about the results as a whole. And if the WWE is spitting out a few too many top level matches but the actual shows are not ridiculously good to blow up their popularity too quickly, then its not too bad.

Adding more talent, a lot of which has been non-wrestlers. Still some wrestlers going in, too. Worked on adding in schedules quite a bit this weekend. And did a bit of work on title lineages. Also managed to adjust things so there are very few companies looking to add or change bookers right off the start. Like I said last week, the end line for a beta release isn't that close... but at least I can see it now. My preference would be to have things "complete" before I do a beta release but I may do it while still working on things like yet-to-debut workers, agers, and title lineages.

Figured I would give a bit of an update as I've been asked a couple of times in the past few days. I'm still plugging away and making progress.

A few notes:

  • Hit 1660 workers. It seemed to take forever to go from 1500 to 1600 and now suddenly 1700 is right there. Weird. I've been adding a lot of non-wrestlers like broadcasters, veterans/legends, and also some active workers. The active workers going in are generally lower level ones, but there are some exceptions.
  • The veterans and legends are generally available as road agents as well, which helps for smaller companies that don't have a pre-set RA on the roster. I definitely want and need to add more of these workers. When it comes to 80s/90s/00s stars who are still active but work at a lower level at this point, its hard to know who are the ones doing actual RA work and who wouldn't or couldn't. Open to suggestions on this.
  • I've added title lineages for a few more titles - TNA World, IWGP HW, IWGP Jr HW, and IWGP Intercontinental belts. The NJ belts helped me find a couple missing workers as well. So far, all belts are still going in with title defenses in there.
  • Began the process of going back through all of the workers who were in the data before the conversion process to look at Attributes. Not going to be a quick process. But on the upside, I'm also using the chance to look at other things - gimmicks, contracts, and skills. Just adding that level of polish.
  • At the same time as doing the above, I've begun a tweaking process. Been identify a group I've dubbed the "2 Good 2 Soon Club". Not sure if I've mentioned them before.... Basically, they are younger workers who have become very good workers in the last few years. But they were generally not yet world class talents back in mid-2013. The like of Will Osprey, Hiromu, Toni Storm, etc. Between who I picked as the base workers and knowing their more recent work, they are a bit overpowered. Which is fun, but not realistic. So they are gradually being tweaked down, given some Potential settings, and I will watch their growth on tests to make sure they generally do become the level of workers they have. I know some will prefer to have no potential set and just let the game world unfold however it will save to save, but I prefer to have some evolve similar to how they actually did.
  • Also did a bit of work setting up the Google sheets I will post up when I do finally release a beta so that folks can add suggestions and corrections there.

I've mulled when I should put out a beta version. I think it makes the most sense to wait until I'm done going through the workers, both in terms of adding Attributes to those already in the data and adding active workers. I will likely not wait for things like Yet-to-Debut workers or title lineages to be completed, however. Sorry to say that's still a little ways off, folks. But we are getting closer.

Not sure if these occasional updates are of interest to anyone or its just me posting of the sake of posting, but I'm gonna do it anyway.

Blew past 1700 workers and at something like 1730. I've added quite a few Japanese announcers, which is awesome, and cleared out the list of active female wrestlers that I had matched up. Down to a long list of active male-wrestlers, some legends and non-wrestlers, and a few active female wrestlers that don't have matches picked out. The active male wrestlers list is around 260 names long, so not exactly close to done that, but still.... progress!

I don't think I've mentioned this before on here, but I also started work awhile ago on a January 1984 mod that I have tentatively tilted Brave New World. Using a completely different approach to creating this one and its all being created on TEW 2020 rather than being converted over like this one or having a lot of stuff imported. Its really more the outline of a mod at this point, as I've added the companies and a bunch of workers but only about 15-20 are "done". Its bene really tempting to put more time into that, but this mod remains my primary focus.

Looks like an absolutely amazing mod. Can't wait to see the finished product. Keep up the great work!

Thank you sir.

Can't wait to try the full version, Papa. Keep up the good work bro! :)

And again, much appreciated. Nice to see you in these parts of the Interwebz.

Definitely very excited for this (and 1984 I might add!) BigPapa. I know the end result will be awesome!

Thank you sir. much appreciated and hope to deliver in both regards.

About 1984....

Really only posting this because I'm stuck at work on a Saturday afternoon and things are quiet. I've been tempted to start a hype thread for the mod but its honestly not far enough along to make that worthwhile.

I'm a child of the 80s and the later 80s are really my heyday as a fan. As such, I love the Risky Business mod by Matty / Jaysin, and obviously Genadi's Golden Age mod. When I played those on TEW 2016, I would also find a bit frustration with the time periods. In 1987, the WWF is a powerhouse and the territories are shattered. In 1985, the WWF is along the path to that dominance and the territories are failing. When I was looking at possible time periods, the start of 1984 really feels like this tipping point or transition point. 1983 feels like a different time period. A different era. More innocent. Hogan won the WWF title in January 1984 and really set the WWF on that path to dominance, and in February 1984, David von Erich died in Japan. I think it would be hyperbole to call that death the end of some era of innocence in wrestling, but it kind signposts that transition.

So by starting at the onset of 1984, Hogan hasn't been crowned yet, David von Erich hasn't died, the UWF departures haven't impacted New Japan yet, and the territoires are healthier. AJPW has the Jumbo-Tenryu feud going and the groundwork for the Four Pillars is being sowed. The WWF's signing spree has only just begun so the roster is still heavily Vince Sr guys and that means the territories all have more talent than they would even a year later.

My methodology for this mod is very different. In importing and converting for the 2013 mod, I was trying to do everything "fully", as suggested in Derek's mod making guide. Each worker got added with everything done as much as possible. But I've jumped around completely without overtly focusing on any areas for an extend period. That downside to that is until I was quite far along, I couldn't do proper testing since no companies had anything near complete rosters. Quite a bit of stuff in the 2013 mod is imported - companies, broadcasters, dojos, venues, non-wrestlers, legends and some semi-active wrestlers. Those things have been or will be adjusted for the 2020 conversion process.

With 1984, the only things I've imported are "base data". That is the name files and that's about it. Everything else will be made from scratch. I started by creating the companies that will be in the staring data - there is about 27 of them - and creating about 200 "shell" workers". They are nothing but a name. I've slowly been going in and making them into the actual workers by filling everything in properly, except for the biography. Going forward, I think I will create about 10 template workers from each region and the shells will be copies of those renamed, and those templates will have a base level of popularity and skills. I can add contracts for those and be able to test with some accuracy even before they are turned into the proper actual workers.

The nice thing about looking at the time period compared to later time periods is that there won't be as many active workers. There are way fewer active companies than 2013 and those companies don't have massive rosters. Somewhere just over 1000 workers would make for a pretty filled-in game-world for 1984. It will require a lot of future companies and workers, but those are easier to add.

My knowledge of 1984 is incomplete. But that's where crowd-sourcing will come in. Whether its people suggesting tweaks or missing workers, that will be key in helping polish the mod when it reaches that stage.

I keep fighting off the temptation to pour more time into the mod, as I'd rather keep more of the focus on 2013 at this point. So this is more of a future project than a legit current project. I know Mammoth is looking at a project in this time period, and there is possibility someone does a full-blown update of the Death of the Territories. Either of those things could make this one feel unnecessary for me to scratch this booking itch.

Looking forward to this Mod, is there an sheduled Date for an Release?

There is not, unfortunately. We are getting closer to a beta release. But I wouldn't say we are THAT close to it. Continuing to make progress and that list of workers going in is always getting shorter. Added a few more broadcasters in Mexico as well.

Looking good

Thanks.

If anyone is curious to see specific workers, let me know. I will do what I can, as long as the request is reasonable in volume lol

I'd love to see Shibata and Naito!

Naito:

I was trying to find an image for Naito pre-excursion. Not 100% sure this one is. He was a bit of a challenge, as he was already a "top" guy for New Japan but fans hadn't really taken to him yet. So without giving away too much, some Attributes have been used to make him a bit of a challenge (thanks hugely to Oyaji for that and a thousand other things... so far).

Im guessing WWE? Shibata-Brock could be quite fun. </p><p> </p><p> As for a progress update.... not a huge amount to update. Still plugging away. Still progressing but its not particularly exciting stuff. I've added more workers, but lots are veterans. Just shy of 1800 workers. The to-add list is down to about 240 workers, but I am shelving a few of them until later if I'm not sure they add a lot of value (as in, they aren't on a roster). </p><p> </p><p> I've been working on a few less sexy aspects. I'm still working on going thru the whole worker list (from the bottom) to check Attributes. So I've done R through Z. Just finished R and it took awhile because of all the refs. There are about 200 in the data. They got fairly generic Attributes for the most part. I've also been plugging away at title lineages and have another handful done. And I've started doing some company checks, which basically means I start up a save with each company and look for things that are missing, check the product, make sure announcers are set, etc. Every company will need to go through this, and more than once. </p><p> </p><p> The title lineages are still including defenses but I'm not being as careful as I was when I started. For the first few belts, I would go through the list of defenses on Cagematch and look for ones that weren't actually success defenses. Gave up on that and am just taking the total matches in the reign, taking away the win and the loss, and using that number. Basically, I got lazy, but there is still a number going in for each. </p><p> </p><p> So in addition to trying to add workers right now that "add value" to the game world, I've also to debate removing one of the promotions. Generally, I'm not looking to add or remove promotions. Decent chance I add some more yet-to-debut promotions down the road and I could add one or two NWA-affiliated companies. But in starting to look at title lineages and completing rosters, I started to question how much value All Pro Wrestling brings to the table. </p><p> </p><p> APW is a small company in California, near SF. They ran a reasonably regular schedule back in 2013, but their owner died in late 2013 and they seem to have scaled back shows. They have an interesting history and some notable names got their start their (Cena, for example), but the roster in 2013 is more local guys. Which means that I either leave them with an incomplete roster or adding workers specifically to be on that roster. Which isn't a huge deal as a lot of smaller companies have that dynamic. But I'm just not sure APW is worth including. The American indy scene is pretty packed - we have PWG (also in Cali), AIW, AAW, FIP, Chikara, CZW, IWA-MS, OVW, Evolve, DGUSA, 2CW, and Ring of Honor. There are 3 all-womens companies - Shimmer, Shine, and WSU. There are 3 companies in Canada. Yet-to-debut US indy companies are MLW, Lucha Underground, GCW, and AEW, and I might add Defy. So I am probably not going to hit delete just yet but.... anyone have a good argument for APW remaining in the data?</p>

Shibata is pretty good. Not AMAZING, but quite good. And DB is pretty amazing. </p><p> </p><p> For another small update.... I moved past 1800 workers but most of the fucus the past few days has been dealing with Attributes. Making progress on that. </p><p> </p><p> No decision on APW yet. I'm also wondering if All Star Wrestling in the UK really adds much. There are a lot of UK companies, and ASW is pretty old school with a schedule that is a bit tough to replicate. It seems like you end up with workers in ASW that don't really fit and I'm not sure I can use Hiring Rules to restrict that enough. </p><p> </p><p> Speaking of the UK.... the recent series of revelations and allegations about the UK scene (I know its extended way beyond that now) is something that can't be ignored. While its relieving to see some of these abusive folks outed and will hopefully result in some reform within the business, its also incredibly disheartening as a fan to see that so many had such horrid behaviors and left so many victims. My heart genuinely breaks for those victimized. But in a pure TEW view, I haven't decided how to have that reflected in the mod. I can say it has impacted my motivation for this mod, although I've managed to keep plugging away. I don't think I've told the story in full in here, but I found Progress in about 2016 or 2017 and watching through all the Chapters renewed my interest levels in current wrestling to a degree. And I wanted to play as them in TEW but the UK scene wasn't really fleshed out fully in the current day RW mods. I got my hands on the early version of RWC from 2013 and started to update that, which led me here, to this. Progress was one of the companies I wanted to run and I now I can't imagine I would ever want to do so in any mod. </p><p> </p><p> In less horrifying discoveries, I found out last night that at this exactly point in time, AAA was experimenting with a brand split. That would really only last for a few months, but it was in place at this point, so.... it will be in the mod. The Evolucion and Fusion stuff makes sense now.</p>
