FINISH HIM

As you can guess from me asking about finishes, this is something I wanted to look at. On the indy scene, a lot of guys are trying to come up with the next cool move, to get them noticed by the internet and whatever, but a lot of the time they're shooting themselves in the foot. Simple moves executed well do better with 90% of casual fans that complicated innovation done "Yeah, kinda". I got my best results with a) Roll ups, feet on the ropes. b) "something off the top". or c) a move that kids recognised from TV. RKO's. Stunners. Cross Rhodes. A really bad Pedigree one time.

So who are the wrestling stars on Australian C-Verse TV? Surprisingly... not a lot of promotions are big over here. USPW are the most popular (78 average pop) followed by RAW (73) and then you have 21CW following waaaaaay back (22). So I narrowed my focus to the top guys in the top two companies, and used Wrestling Spirit 3 to find out their moves. In alphabetical order...

  • Alicia Strong (USPW) Angel Driver (Arrow Suplex)
  • Blake Belushi (RAW) Axe Kick
  • Frogue Element (RAW) Frog Splash
  • Joss Thompson (USPW World Champion) Clean Cutter (Spinning Back Suplex Bomb)
  • Loxley Robbins (RAW) Double Underhook Powerbomb
  • Luke Steele (RAW) Steele Crusher (Over Shoulder Backbreaker Hold)
  • Maurice Jackson (RAW) Rolling DDT
  • Nicky Champion (USPW) Hawkeye Hammer (Double Underhook Facebuster)
  • Rich Money (USPW) Dollars From Heaven (Frog Splash)
  • Steve Frehley (USPW) Frehley's Comet (Tornado Face Slam F5) or Dark Destroyer Spear (trademark)
  • Swoop McCarthy (RAW) Running Powerslam
  • Trent Shaffer (USPW) Heart Burn (Lung Blower)

So there's a little idea of what Aussie C-verse kids buy as finishes. How do my guys stack up? Again, I use WreSpi3 for the 'canon' moves, where available.

SATISFYING ENDINGS

CASgiD8.jpgsBi1fya.jpgN9lm9tI.jpgpiIkBhP.jpgHA603cc.jpg8GgfqaA.jpg

D-POD - Moves off of the top rope aren't all that impressive on TV these days, but seeing it live? It has an impact. As a smaller guy, I was often given the duty of finishing with "something off the top". I used an Elbow, but D-Pod's Moonsault is even better. Flippier. Great stuff.

GOD OF WAR - The Powerbomb is a high impact classic. Lifts them high. Drops them loud.

MAULER - I thought the Running Powerslam was pretty meh. Boring, but fine for a big, bulky, old school brawler... but it turns out Swoop McCarthy uses it as a finish on a weakly basis on RAW. So it's perfect and believable.

PAT RIGSBY - The Piledriver is a classic, and Rigsby's matches focus on telling the story of his Stuff Piledriver variation. Awesome.

SURFER DUDE LUCAS - I'm not wild on the Angle/Olympic Slam as a move, and I don't know of anyone on C-Verse TV in Australia who is using it to get it over to the kids, but Lucas' bio specifies just how "impressive" his Spinning Angled Slam variant is, so it's gotta be good.

WES SCHNORFESST - The Schnorfesst Bomb is a Spinning Back Suplex Bomb, which is not only super cool and flashy, but also used on a regular basis by Joss Thompson on TV. Although I have been wanting Wes to use a Sleeper, for the pun.

IT'LL DO

FvuJ5Rf.jpggDJRJkm.jpgLxKYgh8.jpgi2YMeBR.jpgfD2MwRd.jpguaB6SG0.jpg

MICHEL BERNARD - MMA rise has made submissions like the Cross Armlock more viable in the last ten years, but he's a heel, and it's not too often I'm going to want my babyfaces tapping out. It's hard to protect a never-say-die attitude when they're literally quitting a match. Again, MMA makes it more palatable, so the move isn't a total write off. Possibly a choke/sleeper would be better.

TREY TALLMAN - The TDT is a regular DDT, which once upon a time was a viable finish (was it Rip Chord's in the C-Verse?) but has been ruined by being used as a transition spot for decades. I assume it's that way in the C-Verse too. So Tallman (similar to Moonchild) has been winning with a lot of Cradles recently. I could see the Hawkeye Hammer/Pedigree working for him.

JESSE TASMAN - His default move is a Fireman's Carry Slam. I don't consider it as weak looking as some (lift 'em high, drop them with a big bang) but I don't know of a John Cena type getting that move over on Australian TV. Plus it thematically overlapped with what I thought I wanted for Tallman. Plus Jesse wrestles a lot of big guys, and he isn't a powerhouse. So I stole the Tornado Bulldog from Bounce Buchanan to give Jesse more of an underdog out-of-nowhere finish. It'll do.

ELVIS ROBINSON - Now this powerhouse could get the AA over. Instead, he has the Wrist Clutch Exploder, which is a bit fancy, a bit fussy (how does the wrist clutch make it better?) and I find exploders to be a shallow bump. Not lifting very high.

THE BAT MEN - Three Strikes. Yooooooou're Out!. What is it? What does it sound like? They hit a guy three times and knock him out. Possibly with some bat-swinging and/or pitching motions. They're brawlers. I like the pun, but it isn't going to set the world on fire.

LIKE A FART IN CHURCH

7puBDVk.jpg6BU35Fq.jpg4RxMOWV.jpgZCrYiA6.jpgJDc0ovs.jpg

MOONCHILD - Legdrops are cool. Legdrop off the 2nd Rope? Less cool. Not that I really want Mr-Break-Your-Fingers to add more risk to his move, or landing on his ass from that height several times a week. Or the top moves on TV, maybe the Axe Kick would work best for him, given his long limbs, but I'm not sold.

DEE LUCKETTI - The Front Roll Legsweep is the kind of innovative, interesting move I have no use for on my Beach. A Forward Russian Legsweep, but he does a roll with it? Could be really cool with months of TV build, but in front of a new crowd? They'll be confused over who did what, to who, and how? Dee's a heel, so he's more likely to cheat to win, and as a babyface, I'd want him coming off the top. I had him use the Canadian Dee-Stroyer recently (for the pun) and while it's effective it's too impressive for his current role.

ICE ICE DAVEY - The Icey Blast is a Hot Shot (drop them throat first on the rope) which is bleh. He's been using the Cold Shoulder, which is a fun pun but not much more than a shoulder tackle. Not sure. Maybe him and Dee need a tag finish.

SMASHER - I don't think this is in Wrestling Spirit, so I have the Smash Hammer is as a basic elbow drop. He's a big dude. It would look... fine... I guess? No. It's bad.

TOBY TOUGH - His Tough Enough is a Running Hot Shot (running and leaping over the top rope, hanging the guy on the rope) and it sucks. He has to climb back in the ring after, and it's too fancy and athletic for a wannabe tough guy brawler.

A good final rating, but I'm a little disappointed with the main event. Bernard is excellent and Rigsby always does better in tag matches, but the tag title defense was merely a good closer. Surfers vs God/Rigsby last month was better.

Dee Lucketti had a good night. I'm enjoying his partnership with Davey, but there's no denying Dee works best in spotfests. It's a real shame Slugger & Davey have poor chemistry. Otherwise they'd be cracking undercard Wild Brawlers.

The economy is on a downturn, dropping our sponsorships by $350 this month. That, plus bringing Lone Rider in for a $270 payday cost us. With Dale Young taking his usual $731, the remaining Bank Balance is $ 881. Just gotta make it to January. Unfortunately, we have the River City Rumble next month, with 20 guys on the card. That's a big wage bill.

I plan to start 2021 slow. Just the Gold/Sunshine shows for Q1, then a big School Holiday tour in early April. I'm thinking Yeppoon (7hr North of Brisbane), Barney Beach near Gladstone (6hr North of Brisbane) and Bongaree on Bribie Island (between Brisbane & Sunshine Coast). The first two will be very formulaic, standard shows, but I'll need something fancier for the third. Some of those fans have either come to a Brisbane/Caloundra show, or could in the future. I'll have an updated Loop picture in January.

Nice to see you going through the moves. It's not something I usually take into account, unless I specifically hate one of the workers finishers.

Aus-Dev is a nice pick up, love the deception gimmick.

Starting to lose a good bit of money now, Dale might want to take that cut.

BEACH Wrestling on the Gold Coast (Saturday Week 2 December 2020) Mermaid Beach

Gold Coast Heavyweight Title: Surfer Dude Lucas vs Trey Tallman

i don´t think you would hot shot the belt back to Lucas but this won´t be clean either so someone is going to interfere and likely start a feud with Lucas to take his attention away from the belt.

Australian Devil, Smasher & Mauler vs D-Pod, Moonchild & Jesse Tasman

You said Devil is on short term deal and that will put him below other established wrestlers in my eyes until proven otherwise.

Pat Rigsby vs Elvis Robinson

Robinson continues to gain valuable experience but don´t think he will beat Rigsby, at least not in main show.

Michel Bernard vs Lee Wilkes

Wilkes is on similar position than Devil except even more so since he lost to Devil in his debut.

BEACH Wrestling on the Sunshine Coast (Saturday Week 3 December 2020) Caloundra

Sunshine Coast Bubbleweight Title: Australian Devil vs D-Pod

Again, similar logic with Devil expect more so with belt on line

Lucketti, Davey & God of War vs Elvis & The Bat Men

Thinking this is the place to give Elvis his occasional win.

Mauler vs Moonchild

S&M need few wins to keep themselves near the top

Welcome everyone to another exciting day of Totally</p><p>

new Gold Coast Heavyweight Champion in Trey Tallman,</p><p>

but today he'll have to defend that title against the</p><p>

Will Taniko Jo get involved? We'll find out later!</p><p>

No smiles or high fives today, Elvis Robinson is all business, refusing to fall for Rigsbys veteran tricks or pretend injuries. Rigsby bludgeons the neck, looking for his patented Stuff Piledriver, but Elvis powers free! Blue Suede Shoe (Running Boot)! Jailhouse Rock (Tilt a Whirl Slam)! Rigsby blocks the Wrist Clutch Exploder and rolls the rookie up with a handful of tights! 1... 2... Elvis breaks free and returns the favour. Roll up! Pulls the tights! 1... 2... 3!</p><p> </p><p>

TANIKO JO</p><p>

Bow down to your Queen of Queensland; Maker of Champions. I knew</p><p>

that when I threw my collar into the ring last month I was changing the</p><p>

course of history, that I was crowning a new Gold Coast Heavyweight </p><p>

Champion... I just thought Moonchild would be the one smart enough </p><p>

to seize the opportunity. Trey Tallman, I made you champion. You owe</p><p>

me your allegiance. Bring me the Gold Coast Heavyweight Title. Put it</p><p>

around my waist and I will do you the honour of becoming your Mistress.</p><p>

I will let you fulfill my every desire as we take over this wretched,</p><p>

disgusting, <em>sunny</em> beach-</p><p> </p><p>

SURFER DUDE LUCAS</p><p>

The only person Trey Tallman is going to give that belt to is me, </p><p>

after I pin him in the middle of the ring. You don't rule this beach,</p><p>

Taniko Jo, and you never will. Your meddling and scheming isn't </p><p>

creating champions, it's creating frauds. You're a pollution on this </p><p>

beach, and I'm going to clean it up.</p><p> </p><p>

TANIKO JO</p><p>

In your dreams. With Trey Tallman joining my subjects I will soon </p><p>

have all of the gold around my waist. Smasher and Mauler will regain</p><p>

the tag team belts. My Australian Devil will take the Sunshine Coast</p><p>

belt. We will even win the River City Rumble in Brisbane in two weeks. </p><p> </p><p>

SURFER DUDE LUCAS</p><p>

Oh yeah? Are you sure Tallman is on your side? I don't see Tallman </p><p>

Tallman arrives alone, determined to take on the former Champion all by himself. They’re evenly matched on the mat, but Lucas easily has the advantage in power and striking ability. </p><p> </p><p>

TANIKO JO saunters out onto the beach, offering Tallman a spiked collar in return for her help, but he refuses to take it. He goes for the eyes and grinds Lucas into the mat, but a series of Fireman’s Carry Takedowns can’t keep the Surfer Dude down. Taniko again offers Tallman the collar, but he locks in a Sleeper! Lucas fades… but refuses to let his Little Dudes down. Back Suplex! Beach Breakers! Ankle Biters! Lucas goes for a Spinning Angled Slam, but Tallman has it scouted. TDT! 1… 2… Lucas kicks out. TDT! 1… Lucas kicks out again and Tallman’s spirit is finally broken. He accepts the spiked collar from Taniko Jo, and as she distracts the referee, swings a devastating knockout pu- Ducked! Gnarly Dropkick! 1… 2… Kick out!</p><p> </p><p>

… until the cavalry arrive. D-POD, JESSE TASMAN and MOONCHILD attack Jo’s minions, brawling all over the beach. Referee Glen Lee tries to establish some order… and that’s when Tallman delivers the knockout punch to Lucas using the spiked collar! 1… 2… 3!</p><p> </p><p>

A day late with this one. I've had a tough couple of weeks. I'm still waiting for the drive to write to return. Luckily this episode was 90% finished a while ago.</p><p> </p><p>

Lots of heel wins and distraction finishes. Bad booking, that. </p><p> </p><p>

As expected, this was a cracking main event to close out the Gold Coast shows for the year. Match of the year, unless something at the River City Rumble can top it. Meanwhile, just when I thought he was getting more careful, Moonchild nearly injured Smasher. It's those Wild Brawls. He's a really good brawler, but gets over-excited and sloppy. </p><p> </p><p>

The River City Rumble (Saturday Week 4 December 2020) Streets Beach, Brisbane

Wiiner Enters Rumble Last, Loser Enters First: Smasher vs Surfer Dude Lucas

The Dungeon cheats to get Smasher his victory, and Lucas becomes the underdog.

No DQ Beach Brawl: Dee Lucketti & Ice Ice Davey vs The Bat Men

The Bat Men have failed to impress me.

Michel Bernard vs Elvis Robinson

Elvis went over Pat, but Michel isn't going to be outsmarted by a rookie.

Diesel Dan vs Whirlwind Lee Wilkes

I don't know who Diesel Dan is, so let's give Wilkes the nod.

20-Man Rumble Match: Australian Devil, Dee Lucketti, Diesel Dan, D-Pod, Elvis Robinson, God of War, Ice Ice Davey, Jesse Tasman, Mauler, Michel Bernard, Moonchild, Pat Rigsby, SLugger, Smasher, Surfer Dude Lucas, Syrus, Toby Tough, Trey Tallman, Wes Schnorfesst, Whirlwind Lee Wilkes

Winner: Surfer Dude Lucas

Wiiner Enters Rumble Last, Loser Enters First: Smasher vs Surfer Dude Lucas

Thinking Smasher wins here because on interferences to make Lucas go first and keeping him looking strong in rumble without needing to win it.

No DQ Beach Brawl: Dee Lucketti & Ice Ice Davey vs The Bat Men

No DQ feels like it should favor Bat Men, well unless GoW decides to come out and play.

Michel Bernard vs Elvis Robinson

Bernard is higher on the ladders.

Diesel Dan vs Whirlwind Lee Wilkes

I´m not particularly experienced with Australian scene on TEW2020 but I´d assume Diesel has more name value thansk to his time in DIW.

20-Man Rumble Match: Australian Devil, Dee Lucketti, Diesel Dan, D-Pod, Elvis Robinson, God of War, Ice Ice Davey, Jesse Tasman, Mauler, Michel Bernard, Moonchild, Pat Rigsby, SLugger, Smasher, Surfer Dude Lucas, Syrus, Toby Tough, Trey Tallman, Wes Schnorfesst, Whirlwind Lee Wilkes

Winner: Jesse Tasman

Final Four: Surfer Dude Lucas, Jesse Tasman, Smasher & Trey Tallman

Most Eliminations: Surfer Dude Lucas

Iron Man: Surfer Dude Lucas

Thinking Lucas is kept strong here but that he´s ain winning, thus he has to start and keeps fighting the odds until only four remain in switch point I assume he gets double teamed by which ever Taniko´s men are still in the match. Giving Tasman the win here, there´s probably not instant title shot on the line here with champion in this but thinking winning this could still build towards that direcction and help Jesse beome a challenger while Lucas likely keeps himself busy with rest of Taniko´s guys.

  • 4 weeks later...

Life has unfortunately hit me a couple of times since I last posted. First, I had to put my cat down. He'd been sick (why I missed the last deadline) but he was young and I expected him to get better, so it blindsided me. Then a few days later I was told I'm being made redundant. So I've spent a month spinning out, bouncing from frantic scrambling and hopeless nihilism. I'll be fine. A lot of folks have been dealing with being unemployed during a pandemic since March.

The project isn't dead. I'll jump back in when the time is right.
