The Thursday Night Wars [Real World, Multiplayer]

2020 had been a hell of a year. COVID-19 ravished the world. After Wrestlemania, Vince McMahon released more wrestlers in one swoop than had ever been thought possible. The wrestling landscape was rapidly changing. The financial burden on companies was growing heavier. In late May, the major wrestling organizations (most notably the WWE and AEW) offered their rosters the option; if they wanted to leave, they could leave.

At the same time, this was happening, three new companies popped onto the wrestling landscape. One in Austin, Texas. One in Los Angeles, California. One in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Adequately funded, these three companies look to add to the competitive landscape of professional wrestling. They were able to capitalize on the availability of talent to build new companies.

All of them secured television deals on Thursday nights. All of them competing for a bigger piece of the wrestling pie. Would they all survive? Would they die? Would talent flourish with the new opportunities? How would WWE and AEW respond to the new competitors in an ultra-competitive market.

This is the story of the Thursday Night Wars.

Authors Note: Hello and welcome to a new project. This is a multiplayer diary from me, King Slender, and my wife Eyreo who is making her diary-writing debut here.

For the set-up, we held a fantasy draft of wrestlers in Questlove's June RW mod. We each set up our own companies, all of them are the same base size as Impact (so Small) with television deals that we negotiated on the first day of the save. We are actively competing against each other -- but we are not (at least at the start) at war with each other. WWE and AEW are still very healthy with robust rosters -- though they did all lose some talent. Same with ROH and MLW and NWA and Impact and NJPW -- and really every company. We did not close any companies down. The goal is to compete with one another and eventually try to become the number one wrestling company in the world. Who will stand tall at the end? We will find out!

Sisters of Combat started in 2020 after WWE and other major wrestling companies dropped the ball with COVID-19 protocols. Many new companies started up in the aftermath in an attempt to sign top wrestling stars who walked away from their contracts. One of these companies was SOC, Sisters of Combat. It was started by Thaddeus Black, CM Punk, and a group of investors to capitalize on the top stars in women's wrestling.

June, Week 1, 2020

Rock music kicks on through the PA system, the crowd starts cheering, and the show begins from a packed Los Angeles venue.

“Hello, I’m Mauro Ranallo, alongside “The Glamazon” Beth Phoenix and we are here to bring you 90 minutes of nonstop professional wrestling action courtesy of the Sisters of Combat. This is our first show and you can expect to see a lot of familiar names and a few you might not expect show up.

Mauro continues, “Beth, you’ve had the honor of getting in the ring with some of these competitors throughout your Hall of Fame career. Is there anything you can tell us about the talent we will see in action?”

Beth replies, “Mauro, these females are some of the best wrestlers on the planet. We have fighters, warriors, gladiators, first-generation stars, second-generation stars, and even one third-generation wrestler. We’ll see many of them perform for this hot crowd tonight. We’re in for a treat, Mauro.”

With that, “Cult of Personality” hits and that can only mean one thing. He’s back!

“Welcome back to professional wrestling, CM Punk!” Mauro shouts over the cheering crowd.

“The heat magnet, the human pipe bomb, is here!” Beth exclaims.

Punk comes down, gets in the ring, and shows off for the crowd. He takes his time grabbing a microphone amidst the “CM Punk” and “Welcome back” chants.

“If I knew you guys would be this loud, I would have come back sooner,” Punk says, beaming from ear to ear. The crowd is going nuts for him.

“I wanted to take a moment and welcome you to Sisters of Combat. You’ll be happy to know that this is not just some new promotion. And before you say anything, this is definitely not going to be like that promotion. You know the one.” CM imitates a Vince McMahon bravado walk.

“No, this is not just any promotion. This is my promotion. My investors have assured I will have complete control of this company. I have my darling wife backstage helping me with the day-to-day decisions. This show is going to start off right.”

Punk hesitates for a moment, figuring out what to say next and letting the crowd process everything he just said. A chant starts to break out.

“Ice cream bars! Ice cream bars!”

Punk shakes his head, but smiles. “All in good time. All in good time.”

“Tonight, I have booked a great show for you. We have some great wrestlers in action tonight. Asuka is here tonight!”

Cheers

“I hope we can call her that without getting sued,” Punk bites his lip. “I might have to foot the bill for that lawsuit. What else? Oh, we have a television title called the Battle-Tested Championship that will be defended exclusively on the television show.”

Cheers

“Finally, we have the SOC World Championship. Tonight, I am making a main event for two of our best competitors to go at it one on one for that belt. Our main event will be Tessa Blanchard versus Charlotte Flair for the Sisters of Combat World Championship!”

Cheers

“Enjoy the show!”

Candice LaRae versus Bianca Belair

Candice throws everything she has at Bianca at a breakneck pace. After getting knocked around for a minute or two, Bianca is able to use her power to catch Candice in a spinning powerslam to slow her down. Bianca begins to dominate the majority of the match. Toward the end, Candice is able to build up a little more momentum. She surprises Bianca with a springboard moonsault and catches her with a 1-2-3!

In 11:29, Candice LeRae defeats Bianca Belair with a springboard moonsault.

A patriotic theme plays and the one and only Olympic hero Kurt Angle comes to the ring. He throws his hands up and twirls for the crowd before grabbing a microphone.

“Yeah. Kurt Angle has arrived to Sisters of Combat. It’s true. Oh, it’s damn true.”

Bianca is still in the ring and Kurt motions for her to come over. With her hands on her hips, Bianca begrudgingly walks over.

“Bianca, you are a tremendous athlete and I am absolutely thrilled to see you in this organization. With that said, how are you reacting to this surprise loss from Candice LeRae?”

“I wish I had scouted the moonsault,” Bianca says. “I have to be honest. I didn’t do my due diligence, and I overlooked Candice. Kurt, that’s not going to happen again.”

Asuka versus Cheerleader Melissa

Melissa is a veteran who uses everything she has to outsmart Asuka, but Asuka is an overwhelming presence with her hard-hitting style. Her flurries of strikes and kicks wear down the Cheerleader, opening up for a brutal submission.

In 15:03, Asuka defeats Cheerleader Melissa with the Asuka Lock.

“Ladies and Gentleman!” Kurt Angle announces. “I’m here with two of MMA’s finest, Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir. Ladies, I understand you wanted to let us all know something?”

Marina crosses her arms. “Kurt, we heard from our old friend Ronda Rousey and she’s interested in joining us in Sisters of Combat. As soon as she’s finished shooting a movie, she’ll be here to put all the competitors backstage on notice.”

“But until that day,” Duke adds, “we’ll be here to put you on notice. We’re no nonsense, no frills, and no days off.”

Sasha Banks and Charlotte come out to join the interview.

“That’s cute,” Sasha says. “You’re good talkers and you put up a good front. But can you back it up in the ring?”

“Because you know we can,” Charlotte says. “Remember that whole Four Horsewomen argument? Well, we’re two horsewomen down here, and if you’re smart, you’ll forget about Rowdy Ronda and join up with us. You could learn a lot.”

Marina and Jessamyn will give their notice by the end of the night.

SOC Battle-Tested Championship

Hikaru Shida versus Meiko Satomura versus Jazzy Gabert versus Evie

Jazzy towers over the other three and asserts herself as the alpha female of the match, tossing the other three around the ring.

Evie works a style of hard soccer kicks and elbow strikes to keep opponents down on the mat.

Eventually, Shida and Satomura work together to take Jazzy out of the match with a double suplex from the top rope. After a back and forth between the two, Satomura secures the pinfall and the title.

In 12:01, Meiko Satomura pins Hikaru Shida to win the SOC Battle-Tested Championship.

The crowd erupts as The Geek Goddess, AJ Lee, emerges from the entrance and stands in the aisle with a microphone.

“It’s so good to see you all again. I hope you’re all as excited as I am. If you are, you’ll be happy to know that next week, we will be starting a tournament for the tag team championships. Yours truly will be teaming up with my good friend Nixon Newell. Good luck to the rest of the competitors. See you next week!”

AJ plays to the crowd and takes pictures with a few fans toward the front of the aisle.

SOC World Championship

Tessa Blanchard versus Charlotte Flair

The bell rings and the main event is on! Tessa and Charlotte compete over the fans’ attentions, tossing out “Woo’s” and small taunts in an effort to one up each other. That spirals into multiple tie ups. Each wrestler takes a turn trying to out mat-wrestle the other with headlock takedowns, stepovers, and waist locks. Tessa gets the edge and “Woo’s” in Charlotte’s face. Charlotte plays dirty and takes a cheap shot at Tessa’s knee, and that’s when the match really begins.

The two brawl around the ring, then around it, and finally, in the crowd. Charlotte suplexes Tessa into the steel barricade, and Tessa is barely able to answer the 10-count. Charlotte heels it up, willing to take a countout victory for the championship. Mauro assures the television audience that if no one holds the belt, a countout win will most definitely assure victory.

After a lengthy battle where Charlotte locks on the Figure 8 Leg Lock, Tessa makes it to the ropes. Tessa climbs to her feet and goes for a running crossbody, but Charlotte moves, and referee Chad Patton gets caught in the crossfire. He goes down.

Charlotte goes outside the ring and looks underneath the apron. She pulls out a kendo stick. She goes to blast Tessa with it, but Tessa hops backward. She stumbles on her bad leg, collapsing for a moment. She brings herself back up to her feet, but Charlotte is ready for another swing. CRACK! The kendo stick catches Tessa completely across the ribs.

DING-DING-DING!

Chad Patton saw it and called for the bell. He must have come to and saw it after the first whiff of the kendo stick. Charlotte begins arguing with Chad. While her back is turned, Tessa snatches the kendo stick from Charlotte’s hand and snaps it across the head of the queen. Charlotte crumples to the ground unconscious.

In 19:45, referee Chad Patton calls for a DOUBLE DISQUALIFICATION.

Sasha Banks hits the ring and lays out Tessa from behind. She then helps up her pal, Charlotte, and the two begin beating down the third-generation wrestler. When all hope is lost, Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke run down to the ring and takedown Charlotte and Sasha. Outlaw Pro Wrestling shocked the wrestling world when it announced that not only was it forming, but that it had partnered with ION Television in the United States, the Challenge network in the UK and Makeful TV in Canada to bring Bunkhouse TV to wrestling fans every Thursday night starting in June. The very first episode of Bunkhoues TV will air this Thursday and it has a star-studded lineup.

The show will see the beginnings of the World Tag Team Title tournament with two big tournament matches -- including the main event which will see Brock Lesnar, who shockingly joined Outlaw Pro Wrestling when he was offered a 5% ownership stake, team with his former college wrestling teammate Shelton Benjamin for the first time in over a decade to take on the smash mouth Puerto Rican duo of Santana & Ortiz.

You do not want to miss this episode of television as Bunkhouse TV promises to be the most exciting hour of pro wrestling anywhere in the world!

We come up from the opening titles on the South Austin Gym, which despite being a smaller crowd, looks packed to the gills and the crowd that is there is raucous with excitement for the very first episode of Bunkhouse TV. The camera pans from the fans to the ringside announce table where Kevin Kelly and Nigel McGuiness are standing.

Kelly, “Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the very first edition of Bunkhouse TV! I’m Kevin Kelly, the voice of Outlaw Pro Wrestling and I’m joined in the broadcast booth by the British Brusier, the former World’s Champion Nigel McGuiness. Nigel, we make history tonight with this episode of Bunkhouse TV and what a night of action it will be.”

McGuiness, “It certainly will be an incredible night of action, Kevin. The World Tag Team Title tournament begins tonight and we will see the very first Television Champion crowned. It should be a great night of professional wrestling action.”

Kelly, “And it all starts with the first match of the tag team tournament. The Good Brothers and Butcher and the Blade locking horns. Fans, you don’t want to change that dial and miss even a second of action tonight!”

The Good Brothers versus Butcher & The Blade

We came right into the entrances for the two teams. The Good Brothers have significantly more experience both as a team and as professionals than Butcher and the Blade, -- despite the Blade having just about twenty years in the business. This match had the honor and responsibility of being the first match of Outlaw Pro Wrestling and all four men took it seriously. There was no haha or shenanigans in this -- this was just four guys hitting each other very hard. Anderson and Gallows have won Tag Team Titles on two continents and their experience was on full display. Despite only being a pro for four years (hard to think for a guy who is over 40), The Butcher matched Gallows hit for hit in a big hoss exchange. There wasn’t a standard shine-heat-hot tag-comeback in this, it was more of a back and forth match with both teams having stretches where they were in control. Gallows hit Butcher with a big running big boot that knocked the big man out of the ring and then the Blade ate the Magic Killer and The Good Brothers won the very first match in OPW History.

Finish: The Good Brothers in 9:19 by pinfall when Anderson pinned the Blade after the Magic Killer

Match Rating

We come out of the ring to a pretaped backstage promo.

Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood, collectively known in OPW as the Revolt, were standing backstage facing the camera. They don’t waste any time launching right into it. They believe that they are the best tag team in the world. They believe that they have proved that over the past six years where they have won five sets of tag team titles together. They have come to OPW because they were promised the opportunity to put tag team wrestling on the marquee. For Tag Team wrestling to be the feature of a company and not just a side part. They came to OPW to be in the main events. To be World Tag Team Champions. To lead the Revolt and to be the Standard in professional wrestling and no tag team in the World is going to stop them.

Toni Storm versus Kris Statlander

The first Women’s match in OPW history. Toni Storm has been rumored to be the very first woman signed by OPW. The Kiwi grappler has been making waves in the last several years, especially after winning the second Mae Young Classic and being one of the best-traveled female wrestlers on the planet. Despite only being two years younger than Storm, Statlander has six fewer years as a professional and has yet to grab any major championships. This match was designed to highlight Stalander’s power and Toni Storm’s toughness. The more seasoned Storm took a beating from Statlander for a large portion of the match -- but couldn’t be put away. She hit Statlander with a wicked headbutt and a running hip attack and a head kick before hitting her Double Underhook Powerbomb to get the win.

Finish: Toni Storm defeated Kris Statlander in 9:38 by pinfall after hitting the Strong Zero.

We go to commercial break and then come back ringside where Kevin Kelly is standing in the ring with “The American Dragon” Bryan Danielson.

Kevin Kelly asks Bryan Danielson why he signed with OPW and Bryan Danielson tells him that for the past ten years he has not been able to be the wrestler has been meant to be. He has watched as younger wrestlers have climbed up the mountain and taken his spot as the World’s Finest Technical Wrestler. No longer could Danielson sit by and watch other men take his crown or mantle.

Kevin Kelly asks him if there is a wrestler, in particular, he has on his list and Danielson replies that the wrestler at the top of his list is the man critically viewed as the best technical wrestler on the planet, Zack Sabre Jr. The crowd goes wild for this announcement and Danielson smiles. He makes it clear that he doesn’t have anything personal against Sabre. He just wants to go against the best in the world and Zack Sabre Jr is the best in the world right now.

Danielson exits the ring and Kevin Kelly resumes his position at the announce booth as we get ready for our next match.

Matt Cardona versus Joe Hennig

The first championship match in OPW history pit two men who have been very underutilized in their careers. Matt Cardona has consistently kept himself in the consciousness of the fans despite organizational misuse and Joe Hennig was never able to get off the ground despite having all the tools. This was no blunder. Both men took the opportunity to really showcase that they mean business. This was a very competitive match up. Cardona showed his impressive athleticism while Henning showed his power and a newfound mean streak. He hit a big running knee lift followed up by a neckbreaker to get a near fall. The match stretched further into the time limit -- it got dangerously close to the fifteen-minute time limit when Joe Henning reversed Cardona’s attempt at the Rough Ryder into a Fisherman’s Suplex that got him the three count and the win.

Finish: Joe Hennig defeated Matt Cardona in 14:36 by pinfall with a Fisherman’s Suplex to win the OPW Television Championship.

Match Rating

Joe Henning snatches the Television Championship from Aubrey Edwards and looks at it. He hoists it high above his head. Outlaw Pro Wrestling’s first night in business and he is a champion. Kevin Kelly comes into the ring.

Kevin Kelly asks Joe Henning how it feels to win championship gold and Joe Henning says that his mission is to prove that he is the perfect professional wrestler. It is time he quit living in shadows of men gone past and time he proves that he is every bit as good as he’s always said. Each and every week, the Television Title will be defended and Joe Henning plans on holding the championship for a long, long time.

The main event of the evening did not disappoint. The crowd stood on their feet for the entire duration of the match. Santana and Ortiz have been one of the finest teams of recent years -- with eight tag team titles won as a unit. The Minnesota Wrecking Crew (due to copyright reasons they can’t be called the Minnesota Stretching Crew) have not teamed together in close to a decade and a half but Lesnar has been the most dominant force in American pro wrestling since 2012ish when he returned to wrestling. This was a very physical match up. Shelton Benjamin was in the match for most of the time for his team. Santana and Ortiz isolated him and worked him over. The crowd clamoured to see Brock Lesnar get in the ring -- and to his credit, Brock was very much alive on the outside of the ring. He bounced from foot to foot and looked like the Brock of old.

Shelton soared the air for Santana and Ortiz’s offence. He took some great bumps and Santana and Ortiz looked very dangerous. Finally, Shelton made the tag to Brock and Brock took over. Big suplexes for Santana and Ortiz. He tossed them around like ragdolls. He even broke out the TBone Suplexes. He hit the F-5 on Ortiz and got the pin.

Finish: The Minnesota Wrecking Crew beat Santana & Ortiz in 13:26 by pinfall when Brock Lesnar pinned Ortiz after hitting the F-5.

Match Rating

We cut back to Kevin Kelly and Nigel McGuiness ringside.

Kelly, “That’s all we have time for tonight. Thank you so much for inviting us into your homes and we hope we see you here next week for Bunkhouse TV!”

Had I known the MWC were Lesnar & Benjamin instead of the Andersons, I'd have gotten a 100% in my predictions, but I digress. Goes to show why it's a good idea to include the wrestlers' names after the team's name, I guess.
