AWA 1989: A Financial Savior Is (Badly) Needed

Recommended Posts

Can’t argue with anything others have said.  You’ve told a fun story of the sale and the emerging storylines have been well done.  I too enjoying seeing the various “jobber names” too.  Waiting for a women’s job match when we can see Lucy McGillicuddy in action.

Likewise, I enjoy reading the results posts (and to get a sort of pleasure in seeing what real-life celebrity or TV show character gets lampooned, either as a jobber to the stars or in some behind-the-scenes minor role [e.g. Gomez Addams as an attorney]), as well as the behind the scenes posts featuring the AWA's inner workings and those of other promotions (including the posts that feature Debbie Harry 😁).

And speaking of the face of Blondie herself...

I read a few dynasties, and this is one of them. Keep up the good work, you don't need to change anything!

Thanks all for the input.

I'm just thinking about putting some parts of the shows in re-cap form due to time-constraints and that's why I was asking about how people read the shows.

Man, DH was one beautiful woman! 🙃

Muraco staggered back holding his gut. Madril back into the ring. Madril caught Muraco with a series of head shots and whipped Muraco into the buckles. Muraco hit the buckles hard, bounced out of the corner and crashed to the mat. Madril tagged in Rose. Rose turned his back on Muraco and looked out at the crowd and Rose pointed at himself as the crowd booed. Boos turned to cheers as Muraco made it to his feet and went over and tagged in Wahoo. Wahoo hit Rose with more chops and grabbed Rose's hair and nailed Rose with an overhead chop. Rose crashed to the mat. Wahoo for the cover. 1...2... Rose kicked out. The two up and Rose caught Wahoo with a kick to the gut. Rose grabbed Wahoo in a front facelock. Rose slyly cinched up on the hold.

Blears: He's choking Wahoo, Lee.

Ref checking but couldn't catch the choke as Rose kept moving around. Rose still cinching up/choking the hold. Wahoo then found the strength to drive Rose hard, back-first into the corner. Rose lost his grip on the hold. Wahoo blasted Rose with a series of chops and then tagged in Muraco to the delight of the crowd. Muraco in and fired away on Rose with punches. Muraco went to whip Rose into the opposite buckles but Rose reversed and sent Muraco into them. Rose charged in on Muraco but Muraco moved and Rose slammed front-first into the buckles. Rose turned around and walked right into a fireman's carry. Muraco pulverized Rose with a Samoan Drop. Muraco for the cover. 1...2... Madril hit the ring and grabbed Muraco's leg and dragged him off of Rose. Muraco up and looking at Madril. Wahoo came in and the ref caught Wahoo and ordered him back to his corner. As the ref and Wahoo had words, Muraco still was distracted by Madril when Rose got to his knees, came up behind Muraco and low-blowed Muraco. Muraco crashed to the mat holding his penis and testicles. Madril back out on the apron. Ref turned his attention back to the match just in time to miss the low-blow, gosh darnit! Rose  stomped away on Muraco, snapped Muraco up and Rose went out on the ring apron and nailed Muraco with a neck snap on the top rope. Muraco crashed back to the mat. Rose back in the ring as Muraco was starting to get up and Rose booted Muraco in the back of the head. Rose snapped up Muraco, whipped Muraco into the ropes and looked to catch Muraco coming off with a clothesline but Muraco ducked the move and came back with a shoulder tackle that floored Rose. Muraco up and punched Rose, whipped Rose into the ropes and caught Rose coming off with a scoop powerslam. Muraco for the cover. 1...2...thr... Madril hit the ring and stomped Muraco in the back of the head to break up the pin try. Wahoo climbed in the ring but the ref quickly got him back out on the apron. Both men down. Ref started the 10-count. Rose up and tagged in Madril. Madril hit the ring as Muraco was getting up and nailed Muraco with a rapid-fire series of punches. Madril grabbed the stunned Muraco's legs and pulled them out from under Muraco and Muraco crashed to the mat. Madril flipped over on top of Muraco still holding Muraco's legs for the pin. 1...2... Muraco bridged out and, after a brief struggle, caught Madril in a backslide. 1...2...thr... Rose hit the ring and kicked Muraco to break up the pin try. Wahoo hit the ring and caught Rose with a glancing blow. Ref ordered Wahoo out. With the ref looking the other way, Madril up and slapped his own hands together to make it sound like a tag. Ref turned and saw Rose and Muraco in the ring. Fans yelling that Madril did the faux tag but the ref's not hearing it. Rose hammered away on Muraco. Rose picked up Muraco and bodyslammed the Hawaiian and then Rose went for a knee drop but Muraco rolled out of the way and Rose crashed knee-first to the mat. Fans cheered. Both men up and Muraco lunged over and tagged in Wahoo. Crowd pooped. Rose went to hit Wahoo but Wahoo blocked the punch try and tore into Rose with a series of brutal chest chops as the fans cheered the future President of the M-80 Sales Commission. Madril hit the ring and clubbed Wahoo from behind. Muraco hit the ring and struck Madril. Madril crashed to the mat and rolled out of the ring to the floor and Muraco followed him out. In the ring, Rose now had the advantage and hammered away on Wahoo. Rose then went to whip Wahoo into the ropes but Wahoo reversed and caught Rose coming off with his big chop finisher. Rose crashed to the mat. Wahoo for the cover and hooked the leg. 1...2...3! Fans popped not only because Wahoo and Muraco won, but also because Rose took the loss. Wahoo up and the ref raised his hand in victory.

Fighting had petered out on the floor and Muraco climbed back in the ring and he and Wahoo briefly embraced and Muraco raised Wahoo's hand in victory.

Marshall: Lord James, Muraco and Wahoo are on quite a roll. No matter who the tag team champions are, at some point in the future they're gonna have to put the belts on the line against these guys!

Blears: Right you are, Lee. Muraco and Wahoo have gelled together quite well. They're gonna be hard to stop.

And to win all these open contract matches where they don't even know who the opponent is until the match itself happens, amazing!

WINNER: Wahoo & Muraco - Pinfall - 12:06

(The video clip would run for 30 to 60 seconds. Roughly the first minute of action is what you'd see on the show.)

Apter: As you see, Choshu is a great talent and will be a welcome addition to the tournament.

The second entrant into the tournament is the king of wrestling in Puerto Rico.

Carlos Colon is as tough as they come and can go toe-to-toe with anyone in the sport.

He'll be a real handful for anyone who faces him in the tournament.

Apter: We've got the first two entrants into the tournament and they are true wrestling superstars.

Riki Choshu from Japan and Carlos Colon from Puerto Rico.

As I've said before, this is shaping up to be a truly international wrestling event. You won't want to miss a minute of the excitement.

Make your plans to join us in Anaheim today!

Anaheim is a great place to visit during the those cold winter months.

There's lots to do in this great city. From fabulous beaches to good restaurants to Disneyland to miniature golf Anaheim has it all and so much more.

And Anaheim has lots of nice, affordable hotels near the Convention Center.

Here's hoping you can join us on February 17 for this historic wrestling event as we crown the first-ever Pro Wrestling Heritage Champion.

I'm Bill Apter. Until next time.

Commercials/Market-Specific promos for upcoming house shows/Generic promos for non-house show cities

The Destruction Crew (WTTC) won a squash match over Ralph Kramden & Ed Norton via pinfall when Bloom pinned Kramden after their Wrecking Ball (Doomsday Device) finisher

Before the match, the Destruction charged down the heel aisle, hit the ring and violently attacked Kramden and Norton before the bell. Enos threw Norton though the top and middle rope down to the floor.

Ref called for the bell to start the match and Enos and Bloom immediately went for their finisher and finished off the bus driver-turned-wrestler Kramden.

After the match, Bloom and Enos stomped away on the downed Kramden and then Enos snapped up Kramden and threw him over the top rope. Kramden yelled: Homina! Homina! Homina! before hitting the floor.

POST-MATCH INTERVIEW:

Nelson: Destruction Crew! That7 was some very angry wrestling...

Bloom: You're damn right it was angry because we're angry!

And we're angry because we offered Patera and Rheingans a non-title match and they accepted! And then Verne Gagne comes out and says that if we lose the non-title match then we have to put the belts on the line against them!

That wasn't part of the deal!

Me and Mike here are pissed beyond belief!

And everyone who gets in our way leading up to that title match is gonna pay a stiff price!
We mean business!

Enos: Patera and Rheingans got their match, they won, and Verne Gagne decides to play pile-on! It's clear Verne is biased in favor of Patera and Rheingans!

Well, the anger these people just saw in the match we just had is just a little taste of the wrath that's gonna be poured out on Patera and Rheingans when the belts are on the line!

Enos clutched his belt next to his chest.

Enos: We'll stop at nothing to keep these titles!

But it's not gonna be just a title defense! Oh no! This is gonna be a lesson in savagery on an epic scale!

Bloom: Gagne is gonna regret the day he gave Patera and Rheingans a title shot!

I can't wait to see the look on his face when we walk out of the ring still the champs!

Crowd booed.

Nelson: The Destruction Crew, everybody!

# Rich quickly put Blackwell in the painful spinning toe hold submission hold. Blackwell managed to use his free foot to kick Rich off. Rich crashed to the mat. Both men up and Rich caught Blackwell with some body shots and went to whip Blackwell into the corner but Blackwell reversed and sent Rich crashing into the corner. After quickly shaking out some of the effects of the match, Blackwell crushed Rich with an avalanche. Rich staggered out of the corner, spun around and crashed on his back in the ring. Blackwell regaining his bearings

Marshall: What's this?! It's Cactus Jack!

Blears: You had to figure he was around somewhere, Lee! It's obvious Rich and Jack are thick as thieves!

Jack hit the ring as  Blackwell prepared to hit Rich with his diving splash finisher. Jack pounced on Blackwell and started pounding away on him. Ref called for the bell. Jack kept hammering away on Blackwell. Rich recovered enough to join in on the assault on Blackwell. Suddenly, Blackwell caught Jack wiht an elbow to the gut. Blackwell started fighting back and was matching Rich blow-for-blow.

Marshall: I don't believe what I'm seeing! Blackwell is showing some serious fight and heart here!

Blackwell gained the upper hand and then started going back-and-forth punching Jack and Rich. Blackwell knocked Jack down. As Blackwell turned his ire on Rich, Jack up and clubbed Blackwell from behind. Rich and Jack had regained the upper hand. The two pounded on Blackwell a little more.

Marshall: Come on, Jerry! Fight on!

Jack and Rich each took and arm of Blackwell's. The pair whipped Blackwell into the ropes and looked to catch Blackwell coming off  with a double clothesline but Blackwell ducked the move (as much as he could duck it) and came back and pulverized Rich and Jack with a clothesline of his own. Crowd popped big-time.

Shot of an angry Blackwell looking down at the two men he just floored.

Marshall: Jerry Blackwell was getting the beatdown of a lifetime when he fought back and wound up taking down those two thugs Cactus Jack and Tommy Rich! Wow!

END VIDEO

In-Studio: Nelson talked about Blackwell fighting back against Rich and Cactus Jack. Also talked about announcer Lee Marshall heaping heavy praise on Blackwell for his fight and determination in the face of incredible odds.

Nelson then intro'd comments about the incident from Lee Marshall.

VIDEO:

Marshall, in his announcer's tux, was standing in front of the AWA logo with mic in hand.

Lee: I gotta tell you that seeing Jerry Blackwell fight back against Tommy Rich and Cactus Jack and leveling the pair with a double clothesline was awe-inspiring to say the least. I still get goosebumps just thinking about it.

Cactus and Tommy were beating down the 'Mountain from Stone Mountain' when Blackwell reached down deep within and showed the heart of a lion in dealing with those two.

I'm still looking for my tag team partner for the match with Rich and Cactus.

Jerry, next week in Las Vegas, there's a question I need to ask you.

Your determination to not be laid out by those two goons is what I'm looking for in a partner.

You know the question, Jerry. I just want an answer to it one way or the other.

See you in Vegas next week.

In-Studio: Nelson hyped the Lee Marshall-Jerry Blackwell meeting on AWA on ESPN next week.

Wondered if Blackwell would accept Marshall's invitation to be his partner.

Video aired of the end of the Richter (WC) vs. Mimi title match finish with the caption: NEXT... NEW CHAMPION!

Commercials/Market-Specific promos for upcoming house shows/Generic promos for non-house show cities

In-Studio: Larry Nelson intro'd video from the end of last week's Women's World Title Match between champ Wendi Richter and challenger Magnificent Mimi.

VIDEO:

# Mimi took the opportunity to get a few boot licks in on the champ. Mimi snapped Richter up and whipped Richter into the buckles. Mimi charged in looking to hit Richter with a flying dropkick but Richter moved and Mimi crashed to the mat. Crowd popped. Richter grabbed Miimi by the legs, dragged her out to mid-ring and catapaulted Mimi into the corner. Mimi slammed head-first into the My Pillow turnbuckle  pad (you ever see the AWA turnbuckle pads?!), staggered back and crashed to the mat. Richter for the cover. 1...2...thr... Mimi got a shoulder up. Crowd groaned. Just then, a platinum blonde woman came to the ring. She was in a black business pantsuit with white shirt, black heels and sunglasses. She stood at ringside.

Marshall: Who is this?!

Richter grabbed Mimi and whipped her into the corner. Richter moved in and was pounding away on Mimi. As the ref tried to separate them, the mystery woman reached into the ring and pulled Richter's foot out from  under her. Richter crashed to the mat. Mimi for the cover. 1... Mimi placed her feet on the middle buckle. ...2...3! Ref turned and called for the bell.  Fans booing loudly. Mimi quickly took her feet off the middle buckle.

The woman at rignside climbed into the ring as Mimi got to her feet and walked up to Mimi. After briefly looking at each other the pair hugged.

Marshall: What is going on?!

Ref went over to Nelson, who was on the apron, and spoke with Nelson briefly. Ref took the belt from Nelson.

Richter up and furious.

Ref went over and handed Mimi the belt and raised Mimi's hand in victory to pretty strong boss. Mimi and the mystery woman were ecstatic.

Richter went over and shoved the new champion. Ref quickly stepped in to keep the two separate. Wendi started having words with the ref and pointed an accusatory finger at the mystery woman and made a gesture that the woman pulled her foot out from under her. Ref said and gestured by pointing at his eyes that he did not see it. Mimi strutted around the ring holding the belt aloft.

Nelson: In a time of 6 minutes, 40 seconds, your winner...and NEW AWA Women's World Champion...Magnificent Mimi!

The mystery woman then removed here sunglasses revealing her identity.

Marshall: It's Sunshine! Sunshine helped Mimi win the belt! Why?! What's with her involvement in all this?!

END VIDEO

In-Studio: Larry Nelson then intro'd a post-match interview with the new champ and Sunshine.

VIDEO:

Eric Bischoff was standing in the locker room with new champ Mimi and Sunshine. Bischoff had a mic.

The ladies were still celebrating Mimi's win.

Eric: This is Eric Bischoff with the new AWA Women's World Champion Magnificent Mimi...and Sunshine.

Mimi, before I talk with you I need to ask Sunshine what she's doing here and what's the relationship between you two?

Sunshine: First off, let me declare that Sunshine is no more. The always happy, perky girl wasn't really me.

From this moment forward I will be known as Valerie.

Eric: Valerie?

Valerie: I've always been ruthless at heart. And I came back to this sport because I want to build up a stable of wrestlers.

And the wrestlers I want in my stable are men and women who only care about two things: winning and money.

And this gal wants lots of both.

I had been watching MImi for some time. She was my first target. I needed a champion to speahead my stable. See that belt she's holding?

Eric: Yes.

Valerie: Mission accomplished.

Eric: Well, you certainly lent a literal helping hand to make sure Mimi won the title.

Valerie: No. No. You are not going to smear me, Eric. My hand was on the apron. I can't help it if Richter is so uncoordinated she tripped over it and fell.

Eric's eyes widened at the absurd statement by Valerie.

Eric: O...K. Let's turn our attention to the new AWA Women's Champion the Magnificent Mimi.

Mimi, do your feel your victory was tainted by the way the match ended?

Mimi: Really? That's the first question you ask the new Women's World Champion?!

There's no congratulations or 'Mimi, what's it feel like to be the new Women's World Champion'?!

I earned this belt! And now with Valerie in my corner the sky is the limit for me!

And Wendi Richter will one day get her re-match! That's in the contract! But now she's chasing me for this belt! I'm no longer chasing her!

Valerie: Good luck getting the belt back, Richter! You've lost it to the most deter...

BOOM!

Off-camera, the door to the locker room slammed open.

Richter, still in her ring attire, came in and walked right up to the new champ and Valerie and pointed an accusatory finger at the pair.

Richter: Who the hell are you to get involved in our match?!

Let me make it clear! You stole that belt from me, Mimi!

Without Sunshine's help you were on the verge of losing the match.

Valerie: It's Valerie now.

Richter: What?

Valerie: I'm known as Valerie now.

Richter: Huh? Valerie?! Sunshine?! I don't care!

As far as I'm concerned you should call yourself the Grand Theft Queen because that's what the people witnessed out there!

Mimi: Richter! This is my moment! Why don't you butt out and leave...NOW!

Richter: Make me leave, Mimi! Go ahead!

Mimi: Enjoy being the ex-champ, Richter!

Richter shoved Mimi just as refs came in and broke the pair up.

Eric: As you can see, the situation is starting to get out of control!

Richter is mad and she has every right to be! This thing is only getting more intense!

Ref's still keeping Richter and Mimi and Valerie separate as Richter and the champ tried to get at one another as the picture faded to black.

GREG VALENTINE ASW DEBUT

Greg Valentine won a squash match over Eddie Vedder via submission with his figure 4 finisher

Greg held his finisher on for a few seconds longer after the match just to torture Vedder a little longer before releasing the hold.

Most in the crowd booed Valentine.

POST-MATCH INTERVIEW:

Nelson: Greg Valentine, a strong win over the young Mr. Vedder in your debut here on All-Star Wrestling.

Greg: Of course it was a strong win for me, Nelson! I don't mess around in the ring! When the bell rings I'm all business!

And my business is hurting people with the most devastating finishing hold in all of wrestling, the figure 4 leglock!

Crowd booed.

Neslon: You enjoy hurting your opponents?

Greg: Of course! It's one of the perks of the job when you're a top dog in this sport!

Nelson: So, being a top dog, as you say, in wrestling gives you the right to injure people?

Greg: The figure 4 is designed to hurt people! It's a move that's not for tickling! It's a move that's for inflicting great pain and agony!

And no one does a better figure 4 in this sport than me!

Prepare to see a lot of wrestlers limping around in the AWA when I get through with them!

Nelson: Greg Valentine, everybody!

In-Studio: Larry Nelson intro'd comments from both Stan Hansen and AWA World Champion Sgt. Slaughter. Hansen has challenged Sarge for the belt.

VIDEO:

Video opened with a shot of Stan Hansen in street clothes and cowboy hat standing in front of the AWA logo with mic in hand.

Stan: Sgt. Slaughter! Take a good look at what stands in front you and your reign as AWA World Champion!

It's the Bad Man from Borger, Texas!

And when we face each other for that belt around your waist I'm gonna make a grand entrance and come ridin' into town on a  thousand head of cattle! Things will never be the same for that city!

I've wanted the AWA World Title back since the day I lost it! I think about it day and night!

That belt needs to be around the waist of a real man! A man who works the land and drives cattle!

It will be a glorious day in the AWA, Sarge, when I take your head off with the lariat and put you down for the 1...2...3!

I'm comin', Sarge!

I want something you have an I aim to take it!

Pic flipped and Sarge was standing in front of the AWA logo in his camo gear, D.I. hat and sunglasses with the belt around his waist with mic in hand.

Sarge: The winter weather got a lot hotter when Stan Hansen blew into town!

He wants the AWA World Championship!

Well, he's not gonna get it without a hard fought battle!

Hansen! My years in the Marines toughened me up and made me a man!

I know you're tough as they come in this sport!

But I'm tough, too! I can dish it out and I can take the best my opponent has to offer and be standing at the end!

The match between us will be one that shakes up the whole wrestling world!

I'm not ready for a match with you, Hansen! I'm ready for war!

And I always come locked and loaded for battle!

See you soon!

Diiiiiiismissed!

Sarge did a quick salute.

I always read through what I missed from here then catch up a few months later. The attention to detail is incredible, the twists and turns in the sale were genuinely unpredictable a lot of the time (although I felt like team Blondie was going to pull through for most of it), and the shows themselves are fun, although obviously very much not what I'm used to.

As someone who's been looking to get into older wrestling for a while, this is a treat. Loved Buddy Rose making an appearance, he's excellent. Excited to see the new, revamped AWA!

Thank you for the kind words.

The press conference to announce the sale of the AWA will take place after the next episodes of the AWA on ESPN and All-Star Wrestling are posted.

But are things as clear as they appear to be...🤔

I hope you will check out some of wrestling's storied past. I think you'll find some things you really enjoy.

YouTube and Daily Motion are a clearing house of classic wrestling.

Most shows back then were built around squash matches and the occasional TV main event. If you wanted to see the big matches, you had to pay to see them at your local arena.

Eric Bischoff is the one who largely changed that concept in the '90s with the advent of Nitro when he threw pay-per-view/house show-caliber main events on TV every week.

Thank you for reading.

Stick around...lots more AWA to come!🙂

I know we normally don’t do predictions here but I thought what the hell since you posted the card.

MATCHES* (As of the time of this press release)

FOR THE AWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
Sgt. Slaughter (WC) vs. Stan Hansen

I see this one going to a DQ with Sarge retaining the title.  Not sure if we will see Lawler involved again or not but I just can’t see Verne letting bygones be bygones with Hansen getting the belt on his way out.  As long as Stan is well paid at this point I don’t think he will care.

FOR THE AWA WOMEN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Magnificent Mimi (WC) vs. Wendi Richter

With Valerie now in her corner I see MM retaining the belt, for now.  I’m interested in seeing who else Valerie brings in on the men’s side.

FOR THE AWA WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES
The Destruction Crew (WTTC) vs. Ken Patera & Brad Rheingans
Never really liked the babyface Patera even though his brother Jack was the first coach of my Hawks.  Rheingans while I fine ethnically wrestler and trainer didn’t have much personality.  So the AWA needs to find some babyface teams to compete with The Crew.  I see Bloom “I’ll handle this Mike” Bloom and Mean Mike Enos retaining these belts for sometime.

COAL MINER'S GLOVE MATCH
Tom Zenk vs. Col. DeBeers

Honestly I have a soft spot for Ed Wiskowski.  The coal miners glove match was a staple in the Pacific NW territory with Dutch Savage being the one that usually brought it out.  Since the glove match is DeBeers speciality match I can’t see him losing one to the likes of Tom Zenk.  Yes make someone with winning the feud against DeBeers but zman is not the man for it.

Battle Royal
if Tully was in it that would be my pick.  Since he’s not I’ll say it comes down to Cactus, Blackwell, the living legend  and The Trooper.  While I’d like to see Cactus win my guess is The Trooper is in for a big push and a battle Royal is a way to push a guy without much damage to others.

Well, since we've already got three...

If anyone wants to post predictions for Brawl In St. Paul 2 please fell free to do so.

I will only ask for predictions on major shows like I did with Super Clash 4 last year.

We'll have at least a couple of major shows in  1990.

Maybe I should consider making the Christmas night show a major show but it would not be a PPV or ESPN special. Your thoughts?

One of the last great AWA matches:

I love the tradition of the old territories where they had Thanksgiving and Christmas special events in their main city.  May not be a main ppv show but you better believe the cameras will be rolling with segment filling spots on the next several weeks of tapings.

I always liked the idea of a big T-Giving night show especially. And then VM ruined it all.

POST-MATCH INTERVIEW:

Nelson: Trooper Del Wilkes, the situation between you and Larry Zbyszko just gets more and more bizarre.

Did you hear Zbyszko's recent comments?

Trooper: I did, Larry.

Zbyszko is talking out of his other end. If all police officers are bad then what's the use in having law enforcement in the first place?!

While there are a few bad apples, most policemen are there to protect and serve!

And Zbyszko seems to forget that he attacked me without provocation!

I'm fighting on behalf of all the citizens of this great country of ours and for all those who walk the thin blue line every single day putting their lives on the line for the people!

Fans cheered.

Trooper: Zbyszko, you say you're gonna fight the law and you're gonna win?!

So you're admitting you wanna tear down law enforcement!

What are you gonna replace the police with if you get your way and get rid of them, Zbyszko?!

You got an answer for that, son?!

Because what you seem to want is a society built on anarchy!

Well, people like me are here to make sure we have a safe, free and orderly society!

Anarchy or freedom, Zbyszko! Take your pick! You can't have both!

Nelson: The Trooper, everybody!

Pic flipped and the Top Guns were standing in their locker room still in their ring attire. Rice had a mic.

Rice: For those expecting to see a match between us and Badd Company we would like to apologize.

Just seeing them standing there in that ring lit a fire under me and Derrick!

Dukes nodded in agreement.

Rice: You all saw what happened!

This fight with Badd Company and that snake manager of theirs is very personal for us!

This transcends normal wrestling standards!

I don't see how either team can win a normal rules wrestling match against the other because the hatred is so strong!

We need a match with Badd Company where we can just be unleashed! There needs to be a minimum of rules!

The match needs to be a survival of the fittest type of battle! Only the strong survive in the end!

Rice passed the mic to Dukes.

Dukes: Ricky just said what needs to be said!

Badd Company! Dallas Page! You just come at us, boys!

Let's see who can survive!

Pic flipped and DDP and Badd Company were in their locker room. Badd Co. were still in their ring attire. DDP had a mic.

DDP: The Pop Guns cheated those fans in the arena! They should be forced to refund every single fan their money because they took away a match the people wanted to see because of  their unprofessional behavior!

But nobody ever accused Rice and Dukes of being too bright.

Do they not realize that Badd Company can wrestle any style of match?! We can adapt to different situations like nobody's business.

So, Pop Guns, where do we go from here? Hmmm... Where do we go?

Because you can't treat Badd Company like you treated us out there in the arena and not think retaliation isn't coming because it is!

There's gonna be no end to this until one team cries surrender!

And I can tell you that team won't be Badd Company!

The event will take place on Saturday, February 17, 1990, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA.

The tournament will take place over two sessions. The first session has a bell time of 12:30pm and will feature all the opening round tournament matches. The second session will take place that evening with a bell time of 7:30pm and will feature the quater-finals, semi-finals and the tournament final.

Last week, I revealed who the first two participants are gonna be in this tournament and they are huge names in wrestling.

They are Carlos Colon from Puerto Rico and Riki Choshu from Japan.

This will truly be an international tournament.

Our next entrant also comes from outside the USA.

He is a Mexican icon and fighter in every sense of the word, from the Universal Wrestling Association it's Perro Aguyao.

Let's take a look at Perro in action in a recent match that features 1936-style camera work. Perro is in the white tights.

https://youtu.be/NzHejq02GwM?t=198

(Just pretend the first 30-60 seconds you see are what airs on TV.)

Apter: As you can see, Perro's another fine addition to this historic tournament and he could be a favorite to win it all with his hard-nosed wrestling style.

Next week, I'll be revealing the first American participating in the Pro Wrestling Heritage Championsip Tournament and it's a major name in the sport!

Fans, tickets are still available and Anaheim is a wonderful place to visit in the winter.

Get out of the cold and come to this city that features lots to do: the beaches, excellent dining options, great golf courses, Disneyland and so much more! There are also lots of hotels to choose from in the area for your stay!

Enjoy the wrestling and enjoy Southern California.

One more time, the Pro Wrestling Heritage Championship Tournament takes place over two sessions on one day at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. For tickets, contact Ticket Master or the Anaheim Convention Center Box Office at (714) 555-1812.

Ken Patera & Brad Rheingans won a squash match over Radar O'Reilly & Clint Howard via submission when Patera forced Howard to submit to his swinging full nelson finisher

POST-MATCH INTERVIEW:

Nelson: Ken Patera and Brad Rheingans, it's now only a matter of time before you get your shot at the Destruction Crew for those tag team titles.

Patera: Indeed it is, Larry. Indeed it is.

We beat the Destruction Crew to earn this shot at them with the belts on the line.

And we aim to not let this golden opportunity pass us by! We want the gold and the gold medal in wrestling are those tag team titles!

Crowd cheered.

Rheingans: We are positioned right where we want to be! This is what it's all about in this, the greatest sport in the world!

I trained harder to become a professional wrestler than I did for the Olympics!

You truly pay your dues in this sport if you want to be successful!

Ken and I both know how hard you have to work to get to the top!

And now we're just three seconds away from becoming the AWA World Tag Team Champs a second time!

Patera: One last thing before we wrap this up!

Mike Enos and Wayne Bloom, you've held those titles for over 7 months now!

And in our book that's seven months too long!

We aim to re-store some respectability to what it means to be the tag team champions!

Nelson: Jerry Blackwell. Come on down.

After a brief pause...

Fans cheered as Blackwell, in his ring attire, made his way down the face aisle to the ring.

Blackwell climbed in and walked up to Nelson and Marshall.

Marshall extended his hand as a greeting and he and Blackwell shook hands.

Nelson: Lee.

Marshall: Jerry, a couple of weeks ago I saw how you fought back against Cactus Jack and Tommy Rich ganging up on you.

I have to tell you that it was awe-inspiring to see. The fight you showed when they had the upper hand was amazing.

As you know, I'm due to have a match against Tommy Rich and Cactus Jack at some point in the future.

I've been looking high and low for a tag team partner but haven't found the right fit yet.

Until now...

The way you came back against them...I just cannot get it out of my head.

So, Jerry, I asked you out here tonight for one reason.

Would you be my tag team partner against Tommy Rich and Cactus Jack?

Crowd buzzing as Blackwell briefly looked around and rubbed his beard.

Jerry: Lee, I would consider it an honor to be your tag team partner against Rich and Cactus.

Crowd cheered the news.

Marshall let out a sigh of relief.

Marshall: Jerry, you don't know how much it means to me for you to accept my offer. I think you're the perfect man for the job.

Thank you.

Blackwell: But first, there is one thing we need to do.

Marshall: What's that?

Jerry: We can't just jump right into a match with these two.

We're gonna have to take some time to train and get you good and ready to step in the ring for a match.

Marshall: I could not agree more, Jerry. And having you train me is truly a bonus. It's always good to learn from the best.

Blackwell: Now, let's get ready to beat those suckers!

Crowd cheered.

Nelson: It is official! Jerry Blackwell will tag with Lee Marshall for the tag team match against Cactus Jack and Tommy Rich!

In-Studio: Nelson discussed Blackwell accepting Marshall's offer to be his tag team partner against Rich and Cactus.

Nelson then announced that Wendi Richter has triggered her re-match clause against new AWA Women's World Champion Magnificent Mimi (w/ Valerie).

The match will take place at Brawl In St. Paul 2 on Christmas night at the St. Paul Civic Center in St. Paul, MN.

TV MAIN EVENT RE-MATCH: Greg Gagne vs. Jonnie Stewart

(Stewart is banned from wearing knee pads.)

The two men went back-and-forth in the brief encounter with neither gaining a clear advantage.

End of the match saw Stewart gain the upper hand. Stewart popped Greg with some European uppercuts and then slammed Greg's head into the top buckle. Stewart then picked up Greg and bodyslammed him. Stewart ran and hit the ropes and came off with a running elbow smash that connected. Stewart for the cover. 1...2... Greg kicked out. Stewart snapped Greg up and went to whip Greg into the ropes but Greg reversed and caught Stewart coming off with a flying dropkick. Stewart crashed to the mat. Stewart up and Greg hit Stewart with another dropkick and Stewart slammed into the buckles, staggered out and was blasted by a third dropkick. Stewart crashed down near the ropes. Greg for the cover. 1...

Marshall: What's this?! That's Manny Fernandez!

Manny charged down the heel aisle. ...2... Manny at ringside and put Stewart's foot on the bottom rope. ...thr...

Manny: The foot! The foot!

Ref looked over and saw the foot on the rope and  ordered a break.

Greg up and glaring down at Manny on the floor. The two had words as Stewart recovered enough to sneak up behind Greg and roll Greg up for the pin. Ref counted. 1... Stewart grabbed a handful of tights. ...2...3! Ref up and called for the bell as the crowd booed.

Stewart up and the ref raised Stewart's hand in victory.

Crowd cheered as Jake Milliman made his way down the face aisle and hit the ring.

Stewart bailed to the safety of the floor and was standing with Manny.

Greg up and both Greg and Milliman were discussing the finish with the ref. Greg pulled on the back of his tights to show Stewart held the tights but the ref didn't see it. The two kept having an animated chat with the ref.

Stewart took the house mic from Larry Nelson.

Stewart: Face it, Greg! You just can't beat the 'Wrestler of the '90s'!

Many booed while others in the crowd just didn't care.

CONTRACT SIGNING

Shot of  a conference table and the AWA logo on the wall in the background.

Seated at the table were AWA boss Verne Gagne (the head of the table), Col. DeBeers and Tom Zenk.

AWA lawyer Gustav B. Schirach III was standing off to Gagne's right and Larry Nelson was standing off to Gagne's left. Nelson had a mic.

There were mics in front of Gagne, DeBeers and Zenk.

Gagne was in a blue sport coat and white dress shirt. Zenk was in street clothes. DeBeers was in his military garb and beret.

Nelson: Welcome to our viewers watching across the U.S. and Canada.

I'm Larry Nelson.

We are here at the AWA headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota to witness the contract signing for the coal miner's glove match between Col. DeBeers and Tom Zenk.

With us is AWA lawyer Gustav B. Schirach III to witness the signing. Also with us are AWA promoter Verne Gagne and the participants in the match: Col. DeBeers and Tom Zenk.

Shot of Zenk and DeBeers staring down each other across the table.

Nelson: And now, Verne Gagne will speak.

Verne: Thank you, Larry.

We are here today for the contract signing for the coal miner's glove match between Tom Zenk and Col. DeBeers.

The feud between these two has been burning red hot for months now and the dangerous, violent coal miner's glove match is another chapter in this ordeal.

We will now have Col. DeBeers sign the contract.

Verne slid the contract and pen over to DeBeers.

DeBeers briefly looked over the contract and signed it and slid it back to Verne.

Verne: Now, Tom Zenk will add his signature.

Verne slid the contract over to Zenk and Zenk quickly looked it over and signed it.

Verne: Attorney Gustav B. Schirach III will now sign the contract as the witness to make it official.
Gustav quickly leaned over and signed the contract.

Verne held the contract aloft.

Verne: It is now official. It will be Col. DeBeers vs. Tom Zenk in a coal miner's glove match.

The match will be held at Brawl In St. Paul 2 on Christmas night, December 25, at the St. Paul Civic Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Now, Zenk and DeBeers will speak.

DeBeers: Tom Zenk, you're a good wrestler and a good athlete. But you're not very smart.

What kind of a man challenges a man to match that is his opponent's specialty?

What do you expect to gain in this match, Tom? Because you're sure not gonna gain a victory.

I'm the master of the coal miner's glove match. Never lost one before and that won't change on Christmas night at the St. Paul Civic Center.

If you think it was bad when I drilled you in the face one time wearing a coal miner's glove before, imagine what it's going to be like when we have the match where, if you get a hold of the glove, you can hit your opponent with it as many times as you like. That could be one time or 100.

Maybe your mind has been wrecked by all the racial pollution in this country. I don't know.

But you just made the biggest mistake, not only of your career, but also your life, when you signed that contract a moment ago.

When the match is over, sorry Zenk, but you're not gonna be paraded around in the ring in victory by some American made multi-racial nightmare.

No! You're going to be a laid out, bloodied, battered mess who might have to have his dental records checked just to make sure you're really Tom Zenk because that pretty face of yours is gonna pounded to jelly when I get that glove.

I am gonna show you no mercy.

And I'll get the greatest Christmas gift of all...smashing a decadent American into the ground on his home turf.

Zenk: I have sat here and listened to you ramble on about what you're gonna do to me and how you hate America, Colonel.

Frankly, I'm getting sick of it and so are the fans.

When you hit me in the face with that coal miner's glove a few months ago I had to wear that special mask just to wrestle. I've never forgotten that. Nor will I forgive it.

I challenged you to this coal miner's glove match, the match that is your specialty, because I know that I can beat you at your own game. This is gonna be payback for the things you've done to me over the last few months.

DeBeers guffawed.

Zenk: Oh! You laugh, Colonel! But just remember that he who laughs last laughs loudest!

I can, check that, I'm winning the coal miner's glove match at Brawl In St. Paul 2!

And I'm gonna give the fans the greatest gift of all, DeBeers...kicking your ass in your specialty match on Christmas night!

DeBeers quickly stood up and Zenk followed suit. The two men glared at one another as Verne made it to his feet.

Verne: Gentlemen, save it for the ring on Christmas night!

Pic froze with DeBeers and Zenk glaring at one another.

COL. DEBEERS vs. TOM ZENK

BRAWL IN ST. PAUL 2

CHRISTMAS NIGHT - DECEMBER 25 - ST. PAUL CIVIC CENTER - ST. PAUL, MN

BELL TIME: 7:00 PM

Pic aired of Stan Hansen with the caption: NEXT... LARIAT TIME!

Stan Hansen won a squash match over Billy Squier via pinfall with his lariat finisher

Hansen was largely booed.

Hansen went over by the ropes and demanded the ring mic from Larry Nelson and got it.

Hansen: Sgt. Slaughter! I know you're here! And if you don't come out right now I'm gonna lariat this son of a gun over and over again until you do!

I might just knock his head into the third row!

Get out here, Sarge! Or this guy gets it!

Hansen tossed the mic aside and stomped around the ring waiting for Sarge but there was no sign of the champ.

Hansen picked up on a mic.

Hansen: OK! I warned you, Sarge! You call yerself the World Champion?!

Hansen quick stomped Squier, snapped Squier up, whipped Squier into the ropes and blasted Squier coming off with another lariat.

Squier crumpled to the mat,

Hansen waited a few seconds and pulled Squire to his feet.

Crowd popped as Sarge in his ring attire and carrying the belt, charged down the face aisle, dropped the belt on the apron, climbed into the ring and nailed Hansen from behind. Hansen lost his grip on Squier who crumpled to the mat and disappeared like jobbers do in these situations.

Sarge hammered away on Hansen before Hansen fought back and the two were brawling  in the ring as the fans cheered the battle. The two were slugging it out when several face and heel wrestlers and AWA officials hit the ring and separated the two. The warring factions were kept apart by the wall of wrestlers and officials.

The two exchanged heated words over the wall before Sarge broke through the barrier and jumped on Hansen and started hammering Hansen to the delight of the crowd. Hansen fought back and the wrestlers and officials  once again separated the pair and again did the wall thing to keep them apart.

Hansen and Sarge jawed at each other over the wall as the program ended.

END PROGRAM

Watch out! Stan Hansen is stomping into the WWE Hall of Fame

Christmas battle brawl in St Paul

if the open contract match happens I hope it’s an incoming team like the Midnight Express with Jim Cornette.  Not that you need a heel team with Badd Co and the Crew but what an upgrade.  With Herd in charge at WCW the Express might be available

AWA WORLD TITLE: Sgt. Slaughter (WC) vs. Stan Hansen

You mentioned a plans change at some point, so I'm thinking DQ.

AWA WOMEN'S WORLD TITLE: Magnificent Mimi (WC) (w/ Valerie) vs. Wendi Richter

New champ gets their defense in.

AWA WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES: Destruction Crew (WTTC) vs. Ken Patera & Brad Rheingans

I love the Olympians separately but the Destruction Crew have had too good a reign going on.

COAL MINER'S GLOVE MATCH: Col. DeBeers vs. Tom Zenk

He's probably losing his next feud after pressure from the new owners (that I personally agree with), but you can't send his heat to freaking Tom Zenk.

PLUS! One other match will be added to BISP2 on the next AWA on ESPN.

Will the match be:

Larry Zbyszko vs. The Trooper

Zbszko is still important and moves numbers, and the Trooper is a new babyface, the kind of which you needed desparately.

Badd Co. (w/ Dallas Page) vs. Top Guns

Christmas Battle Royal

OPEN CONTRACT MATCH: Wahoo McDaniel & Don Muraco vs. ???

With the mass exodus that Herd and his absolute stupidity caused around this time, it'll be interesting to see if a bunch of those people who were squandered in cartoonland or just ended major league wrestling (sorry SMW fans) find a home in this new AWA. Given Crockett's involvement, there are several huge names that could come in like Arn and Tully along with the Midnights. Maybe the Rockers can come back since they're on the outs with Vince a few times around this time too. There are definitely some options there if Debbie and John want to pony up some money for a few months to build interest for a better TV deal.
