Black Canvas Grappling: Invasion of the TITANS

Recommended Posts

Osaka, Japan

January of 2020

It is Black Canvas Grappling's first major show of the new year. The promotion, a heaven for fans of old school puroresu who don't want to hear about juniors or comedy wrestling, has been going from strength to strength. Arch rivals Golden Canvas Grappling have been vanquished and BCG not only survived the tsunami, it thrived, now boasting a wider fanbase, improved finances, a nationwide broadcast deal and its very own dojo. It is as if all these struggles, all the effort of these last 8 years has been crystallized into the two men inside the ring headlining the show as they slap each other's chests with chops that echo across the venue, looking for a gap in each other's defenses, for a moment when the flame of a warrior's spirit will tremble, so they can rush in and hit their devastating finishing moves.

fWXoRCL.jpg

On one side, the man known only as Funakoshi. The defending BCG World champion. The rock upon which the entire promotion has been built. The stoic loyalist who persevered and won fans over with his unyielding spirit. The tenacious modern day samurai who managed to defeat the legendary Pistol Pete Hall and cement his legacy. Today's Ace and tomorrow's Hall of Famer. His Butterfly Backbreaker is feared across Japan, but it is a complex move to pull off and he must wear his opponent down to be able to hit it, just like he's been doing tonight for over 20 minutes.

2KCRaNe.jpg

On the other side is Noburo "Blast" Ikoma. A BCG original since day one next to Funakoshi, Ikoma earned his nickname thanks to his explosive suplex style, which includes a dangerous release suplex into the corner pad as well as the Northern Lights Bomb he likes to utilize to finish off his opponents. Though he has not been able to reach the heights that his opponent did, Ikoma is a former holder of that BCG World title, which makes him a formidable challenger. Just last year, he survived three other opponents in the company's only multi-sided match on the calendar to win the Sole Survivor trophy. Many spoke of a potential comeback to success and tonight is the night that Ikoma has the chance to do just that.

The match has reached its climax by now, both men trading big moves and near falls, signaling to the audience that they're about to see the finish. A spent Ikoma wraps his arms around his fallen opponent's waist to pull him up... can he pull off the deadlift german? No! Standing switch from Funakoshi, who gets a rush of adrenaline, hooking the hands... could it be? Butterfly Backbreaker! One... Two... Three!

Nearly 5.000 fans burst into applause at the beloved champion retaining, though the cheers quickly are directed towards both warriors, congratulating and thanking them for the spectacle they put on tonight. Funakoshi is handed the BCG World title as the young lions rush to deliver the icepacks. The champion struggles to his feet, sneers and raises the belt in celebration... then all of a sudden, the lights go out!

"So, this is where the big boys play..."

A mocking voice is heard on the announce system, talking in English and not Japanese. The big screen above the entrance ramp flickers and fades in to reveal a face shrouded in darkness.

DREAD?!?!

"I am not here to play... I'm here to conquer the only place in this country that's eluded me. The only place worthy of my Army's attention..."

wy2Wo4L.png7GnLRLs.pngjfHp5w3.png

The screen flickers dead and the lights come back on to reveal three massive, menacing figures standing at the top of the entrance ramp. Not quite sure what's going on, Funakoshi assumes a fighting stance and the recovering Ikoma joins him. Two Black Canvas Originals, two men that moments ago left it all out in the ring trying to destroy each other, now stand together side by side against this new threat. What a visual to end the show with.

Author's Note: It's no secret BCG is my favorite Japanese CVerse promotion and sadly, my previous diary ended abruptly when the save file got messed up. Of all the stuff I've done, people seem to enjoy my puro diaries most, but I've been waiting for a new idea to pop up before I gave BCG another go (plus I've also been fighting against my urge to run multiple diaries at the same time, I'm aware). Said idea came up a while back and this is what it's spawned. King Bison has been kind enough to grace the community with the TITAN mod, complete with renders, when he noticed that Dread's dojo in the 2016 game had no graduates and while I've enjoyed it, I've never been able to utilize those people proper in a save, until I realized how I usually run BCG: no juniors, no full-face masked wrestlers, no high flyers, no small workers. Dread's boys fit the mold just perfect and having that common background means they can launch a full on invasion as a group. On top of that, I realized that Dread has held BHOTWG, PGHW and GCG but not BCG gold, so this could justify his invasion since he's now retired from wrestling. Could this business partnership and storyline be the thing that launches BCG to the upper echelons of Japanese wrestling? Let's find out!

BCG Heritage 2020 results

In the main event, Funakoshi defeated Blast Ikoma for the BCG World title. Ikoma had won the Sole Survivor prize and his match was set for the first major show of 2020, but he could not convert the opportunity to a title win. This victory marks Funakoshi's third successful title defense since winning the belt from Mabuchi Furusawa in October of 2019.

In the semi main event, "Machine Gun" Bunrakuken Torii defeated Dynamite Narahashi in a spectacular bout that almost stole the show. Fast paced and exciting as opposed to the slow burner main event, the match ended at 18 minutes and 25 seconds, with many claiming that had the two men been given more time to wrestle, it might have well managed to outshine the BCG World title match that followed.

Miura & Yoshizawa defeated Team Taku to retain the BCG World Tag Team titles in a clash that saw two of BCG's longest running and fan beloved teams face off. For all his experience, 52 year old Toshinobu Taku fell victim to the one opponent no wrestler can defeat, time. This is the third defense for the champions, who have been holding the titles since they defeated Kadonomaro Kamisaka & Kiyotaka in November.

BCG veterans Yokokawa & Sen defeated Big Bruiser Findlay & Giant Brody in a hard hitting match that pitted them against BCG's largest gaijins. Sojuro Sen managed to squeeze a humiliating submission victory out of Findlay, an outcome which many insiders have claimed is punitive or a wake up call, since Findlay not only seems to have let himself go to the detriment of his physique, he also caused a back injury to the night's big absentee, Razan Okamoto, during the tour shows of January.

Golden Canvas Grappling alumni Mabuchi Furusawa and SUKI defeated Kadonomaro Kamisaka & Kiyotaka, also known as "3K" in a match that pitted the former BCG World Tag Team champions against two of GCG's biggest singles stars. As expected, the match focused heavily on technical wrestling and submission holds, with all four men spending much time rolling around on the mat. Despite the solid performance, the general consensus seems to be that fans were already too hyped by that point for such a slow cerebral match that could have been better if the competitors were given more time.

Having previously collected all three tokens required for a shot at the belt, Tanyu Toshusai defeated Naozane Goto for the BCG Challengers Series title and became the first ever three time holder of that championship. Goto attempted to bully his opponent around and score a dominant quick win, but Toshusai evaded him and managed to slow down the pace while dragging the match past the 15 minute mark, exhausting the former champion just enough so he could zone in for the kill.

After dramatically quitting Pro Wrestling SAISHO earlier in the month, Azumamaro Kita defeated Rokuemon Matsushita in his debut match for BCG. In a short but hard hitting contest, Kita made good use of his Muay Thai inspired array of kicks to chop down Matsushita's legs and limit his mobility, forcing him to move slow and denying him a vertical base for power moves. Matsushita left the ring with a noticeable limp, though whether Kita went too far with the stiffness of his shots or Matsushita's selling was on point is still a mystery.

In the opening contest, The American Cobras defeated Danjuro Kikuchi and Ryobe Uno, a duo fittingly named "Last of the Golden Lions" due to their short past with GCG before its closure. The veterans showcased their extensive experience as a team to get the win, but Kikuchi and Uno had a natural chemistry going on for them and it made the contest way more competitive than expected, a fact that in turn had fans excited as soon as the show began.

Following the finish of Heritage, Black Canvas Grappling officially put out a call for its wrestlers to band together into factions in order to defend the promotion. This led to the formation of several groups, while some of the wrestlers chose to stay out of this and remain unaffiliated.

Seven Samurai

2C2TFxV.jpg3t41LoN.jpgdaJAps6.jpgjVRGMVw.jpgshcIJcc.jpgS3NOutE.jpgc6hR1Sj.jpg

Funakoshi, Blast Ikoma, Kadonomaro Kamisaka, Kiyotaka, Nobuharu Yokokawa, Sojuro Sen, Roku Sotomura

The BCG World champion proclaimed he would be hand picking six others to join him as the Seven Samurai. From the name and his choices, it is clear he is looking to lead an elite group of BCG loyalists with a habit of no-nonesense wrestling and a rather traditionalist outlook to the sport. Despite his loss at Heritage, Ikoma seems to still enjoy the respect of Funakoshi, a relationship reheated in the fire of that match and leading to him joining the faction. Fans were also quick to notice the presence of two established tag teams in the group, something that should mean strong representation during the upcoming TagMania tour and show.

Dawnguard

Bunrakuken Torii, Toshinobu & Yoshinaka Taku, Naozane Goto, Ichiro Mitsukuri, Koyo Kinoshita, Suguru Emoto

"Machine Gun" Bunrakuken Torii was critical of Funakoshi's approach, which he openly criticized in the media as "short sighted" and "out of date", claiming a new mindset is required to face this new threat, hence the name of his faction. Torii has managed to put together a group of young, hungry upcoming talents and his long run strategy might indeed pay off, as many see Dawnguard containing many of BCG's future stars.

Pillars of Puroresu

Mabuchi Furusawa, SUKI, Tanyu Toshusai, Danjuro Kikuchi, Ryobe Uno

The sudden rush of patriotism in BCG wasn't without backlash, as five of its roster who also happen to be GCG alumni found themselves in a weird spot. Banding together and calling themselves the Pillars of Puroresu, or just Pillars for simplicity, the group decided to turn up the controversy when, on top of their shared GCG past, they also decided to use the Modern Japan Movement logo as their own. Most BCG fans see them as the embodiment of everything the company has been fighting against, but ask them and they'll talk about working for the oldest promotion in Japan and how they're continuing this heritage into the modern day.

vKHCk91.jpg

Bruiser Brigade

5Skxv12.jpgceDGfhh.jpgmUEUpR9.jpg

Animal Harker, Big Bruiser Findlay, Giant Brody

The trio of Harker, Findlay and Brody quickly made it clear they are not aligned nor do they wish to be on the side of Dread's forces, but neither are they willing to defend Black Canvas. The Bruiser Brigade is here to dominate through sheer power, beat people up and get paid to do it.

Okamoto-gun

GskIv1l.jpgWBJHqx5.jpg1fsXQIm.jpgMOUXi3u.jpgchR5Y96.jpg

Razan Okamoto, Dynamite Narahashi, Yoshisada Matsuzawa, Inejiro Yoshizawa, Noritoshi Miura

Refusing to take all this (or themselves) too seriously, as evidenced from their lack of a proper name and logo, the men in this group are all about having fun and entertaining the audience. Don't let their charm fool you though, they are a competent bunch and know full well when to get serious inside the ring.

Unaffiliated

Rokuemon Matsushita, Sharaku Okimasa, Sofu Ozawa, Yoriie Ippitsusai, Azumamaro Kita, Omezo Shikitei, Marvel Malloy, Storm Spillane

As BCG is expected to perhaps bring in more workers to bolster its ranks while Dread's full roster of troops remains unknown, an extensive presentation of the roster will be made after the 2020 Yoshifusa Maeda Grand Prix, set to take place in April.

TagMania 7 Tour Press Conference

wy2Wo4L.pngjfHp5w3.pngwUa80ip.jpgCpkiFPW.jpg

The participants of this year's TagMania tournament were announced during the Press Conference to promote the tour and it was confirmed that Dread's people will be represented by a team named "The Horror". Although not present, the team's members were revealed as Abomination and Monstrosity, the two unmasked men who appeared at the end of the Heritage show. Their first scheduled opponents, Dawnguard's Ichiro Mitsukuri and Koyo Kinoshita were in attendance and stated they're honored to be the first facing this new threat, albeit admitting that they have zero information they can use to prepare for this match.

daJAps6.jpgjVRGMVw.jpg8ltSQtm.jpgjsIhDXQ.jpg

Even though they lost their match at Heritage, former BCG World Tag Team champions 3K still come into the tournament as one of favorites to win it. Their first opponents will be the Last of the Golden Lions, a match many see as BCG vs GCG given its participants and the factions they represent. Kikuchi and Uno also played up the fact that they're relatively new to the company, saying this gives them the element of surprise and a chance for an upset victory against Kamisaka and Kiyotaka.

OKNjHCy.jpgWGDp9oH.jpg8NlUtyD.pngIdpVsZb.png

Dawnguard will also be represented in the tournament by Team Taku and the question here is whether Toshinobu Taku can withstand a gruelling tournament at his age. His declining ability already cost him a match at Heritage and The American Cobras are coming in with a reputation as the next kings of the western indies much like The Ring Generals before them, having held COTT, OLLIE and CZCW gold.

hwrA1Uw.pngOH8kW1w.pngshcIJcc.jpgS3NOutE.jpg

Finally, the veteran teams of Ipputsusai & Okimasa and Yokokawa & Sen will be competing in the tournament, bringing their experience and toughness to test younger opponents. Yokokawa & Sen answered reporters' questions by saying that after joining Seven Samurai, they are very motivated to do well, whereas Ippitsusai & Okimasa said they have the clear head to focus 100% on the match without having to worry about politics.

2C2TFxV.jpg3t41LoN.jpgwFcGLdM.jpgQdKNLA8.jpg

Other than the tournament, most of the interest revolved around the announced semi main event match, in which Funakoshi and Blast Ikoma will take on Mabuchi Furusawa and SUKI. The leaders of their two respective factions have their personal World title rivalry on top of the legacy of each side representing BCG and GCG, all of which points to a potential show stealer when they get to meet inside the ring.

5Skxv12.jpgceDGfhh.jpgBjgvDys.jpgVV10Xvu.jpg

Despite regularly teaming together and even having won the World Tag Team titles on one occasion, Animal Harker and Big Bruiser Findlay were omitted from the tournament this year and they weren't shy about voicing their opinions. Bunrakuken Torii and Naozane Goto stepped up and offered to shut them up, which in turn led to a match being scheduled for the final TagMania show. Goto got in his opponents' face during the interview and things nearly got physical, but the calmer Torii was able to convince his stablemate to save it for the ring.

mUEUpR9.jpgRVNsc1B.pngWBJHqx5.jpg1fsXQIm.jpg

Giant Brody was also pretty vocal after Heritage in his attempts to recruit arguably the hottest unaffiliated wrestler to his group. Matsushita declined, but BCG management apparently liked the idea enough to greenlight a match where they will be teaming up against Okamoto-gun's Narahashi and Matsuzawa.

c6hR1Sj.jpgfF9W0Ow.png

Finally, Roku Sotomura and fellow veteran Sofu Ozawa used their mic time to issue an open challenge, inviting any team that has been eliminated from the tournament by the time of the final show to meet them inside the ropes. Anyone answering the challenge will have a chance to be on that card, but they risk being doubly humiliated if they end up losing.

Looking forward to more and more of Dread's Army appearing as time goes on!

I am hooked. Go Dread's Army go.

Welcome both. I'll need to build up some popularity for Dread's boys before they're in any major matches so don't expect big things right out the gate, but I guess that's part of the charm/challenge too, witnessing their journey.

1. Kita & Shikitei defeated Mitsukuri & Kinoshita in 10:14 when Omezo Shikitei submitted Ichiro Mitsukuri with a Cross Armbreaker. [39]

2. Yokokawa & Sen defeated Ippitsusai & Okimasa in 18:21 when Nobuharu Yokokawa submitted Yoriie Ippitsusai with a Stump Puller. Yokokawa & Sen advance to the next round of the TagMania 7 tournament. [43]

3. Bunrakuken Torii and Naozane Goto defeated Dynamite Narahashi and Yoshisada Matsuzawa in 18:11 when Bunrakuken Torii pinned Yoshisada Matsuzawa with a Spinning Forearm Smash. [55]

4. Miura & Yoshizawa defeated Mabuchi Furusawa and SUKI in 18:29 when Noritoshi Miura pinned SUKI with a fast roll up. [58]

5. Funakoshi and Blast Ikoma defeated The Wild Ones in 18:10 when Blast Ikoma pinned Animal Harker with a Northern Lights Bomb. [67]

~ The TagMania 7 tournament kicked off with two technically sound and experienced teams facing off in the second match of the night. The competition was fierce and Ippitsusai smartly picked his spots in order to avoid running out of steam too early, but this in turn left Okimasa to do the brunt of the work for their team. Tired and frustrated, Okimasa had to tag out and eventually Ippitsusai got caught in the Stump Puller for the submission.

~ Just days after their big title match against each other at Heritage, Funakoshi and Ikoma proved their honor is greater than their ego when they managed to work together as a unit against Animal Harker and Big Bruiser Findlay. With this big win in the main event and already one team from Seven Samurai advancing in the TagMania 7 tournament, the group had a successful evening and have to be optimistic for the future.

~ The BCG World Tag Team titles may have not been on the line, but that didn't mean the champions would hold back. Miura & Yoshizawa were able to outsmart their opponents and frustrate them enough to fall for a quick roll up pin. A frustrated SUKI threw an absolute tantrum after the loss and it took much effort from Furusawa to calm him down, but not until he'd vented his anger on some young lions around the ring first.

BCG TagMania 7 - Night 2 in Osaka, Kansai Region

Wed. W1 February 2020

1. Omezo Shikitei and Yuta Isono defeated Azumamaro Kita and Takenori Doi in 10:27 when Omezo Shikitei submitted Takenori Doi with a STF. [48]

2. Dynamite Narahashi defeated Giant Brody in 13:54 by pinfall with a Narahashi Cutter. Dynamite Narahashi wins one of the Challengers Series Medallions. [44]

3. 3K defeated Last of the Golden Lions in 16:23 when Kiyotaka submitted Ryobe Uno with a Kimura. 3K advance to the next round of the TagMania 7 tournament [53]

4. Seven Samurai (Funakoshi, Blast Ikoma and Roku Sotomura) defeated Dawnguard (Bunrakuken Torii, Naozane Goto and Suguru Emoto) in 16:26 when Blast Ikoma pinned Suguru Emoto with a Northern Lights Bomb. [55]

5. Pillars of Puroresu (Mabuchi Furusawa, SUKI and Tanyu Toshusai) defeated Okamoto-gun (Inejiro Yoshizawa, Noritoshi Miura and Yoshisada Matsuzawa) in 18:22 when SUKI submitted Yoshisada Matsuzawa with a SUKI Special III. [66]

~ Pillars got their revenge in the main event and SUKI even got to be the one to get the tap, even if it came from Matsuzawa and not one of the World Tag Team champions. Furusawa, SUKI and Toshusai are great wrestlers on their own, but seeing them here as a combined force was an intimidating prospect for anyone who might be facing them down the road.

~ Seven Samurai had another great night, with Funakoshi leading his trio to victory over their Dawnguard opponents and 3K advancing to the next round of the TagMania tournament, where they'll face the winners of Team Taku vs The American Cobras. Following Yokokawa & Sen's victory during the previous tour show, the faction now has a good chance of claiming the double cups as both its teams have made it to the semi finals.

~ Giant Brody may have the size and power, but Dynamite Narahashi used his wits and experience to outsmart him in a one on one match for the first of three Challengers Series Medallions. Narahashi will now have to defend his medallion and face future holders of the other three, hoping to collect them all for a shot at Tanyu Toshusai's recently claimed belt.

</div>

Author's Note: If you're wondering what the deal with these medallions is, who is even on the roster and so on, just go with the flow like it's a promotion you discovered already in the middle of something. It will all make sense eventually, plus I will make extensive posts about the roster and titles after the Yoshifusa Maeda Grand Prix.

BCG TagMania 7 - Night 3 in Kobe, Kansai Region

Sat. W1 February 2020

1.Omezo Shikitei, Sofu Ozawa, Takenori Doi and Big Boss Emperor defeated Rokuemon Matsushita, Azumamaro Kita, Yoriie Ippitsusai and Nobuyuki Kubo in 9:54 when Omezo Shikitei submitted Nobuyuki Kubo with a Cross Armbreaker. [45]

2. Okamoto-gun (Dynamite Narahashi, Inejiro Yoshizawa and Noritoshi Miura) defeated Bruiser Brigade (Animal Harker, Big Bruiser Findlay and Giant Brody) in 16:06 when Inejiro Yoshizawa pinned Animal Harker with a Yoshizawa Bomb. [53]

3. Roku Sotomura defeated Sharaku Okimasa in 16:13 by submission with a Twisted Bow And Arrow. Roku Sotomura wins one of the Challengers Series Medallions. [47]

4. The Horror defeated Mitsukuri & Kinoshita in 9:51 when Monstrosity pinned Koyo Kinoshita with a Chokeslam From Hell. The Horror advance to the next round of the TagMania 7 tournament. [44]

5. SUKI and Tanyu Toshusai defeated Funakoshi and Blast Ikoma in 20:39 when Tanyu Toshusai pinned Blast Ikoma with a Dangerous Brainbuster. [68]

~ Recently crowned Challengers Series champion Tanyu Toshusai proved a point in the main event, when he flattened Blast Ikoma with his Dangerous Brainbuster that earned his team a pinfall victory. Even without Mabuchi Furusawa around, the two members of Pillars got a big win of the top two men of Seven Samurai, a rough wake up call for Funakoshi and his faction after a successful start in the tour.

~ Abomination and Monstrosity, collectively known as The Horror, made their in-ring debut for Black Canvas and what a display of dominance it was! The two heavyweights did not seem to feel the impact of their opponent's blows and steamrolled right through Mitsukuri & Kinoshita to plant the flag of Dread's new invading faction on BCG soil. Yokokawa & Sen will have to bring all their toughness and experience if they hope to make a stand and enter the finals of the tournament when they meet The Horror inside the ring.

~ Roku Sotomura may be into the fourth decade of his life but he proved he is not to be counted out when he put Sharaku Okimasa in a Twisted Bow And Arrow that forced the submission. This was but the last in a series of holds from bell to bell, a technical match with fluid chain wrestling for one of the Challengers Series Medallions. Sotomura now joins Dynamite Narahashi in waiting to find out the holder of the third medallion, before they begin the process of wrestling each other until one man has them all for a shot at the title.

1.Big Bruiser Findlay and Giant Brody defeated Rokuemon Matsushita and Sharaku Okimasa in 18:11 when Giant Brody pinned Sharaku Okimasa with a Single Handed Choke Slam. [57]

2. Azumamaro Kita defeated Animal Harker in 9:33 by pinfall. An injury to Animal Harker meant that an audible was called and the finish was changed on the fly. Azumamaro Kita wins one of the Challengers Series Medallions. [49]

3. Seven Samurai (Funakoshi, Blast Ikoma and Roku Sotomura) defeated Okamoto-gun (Inejiro Yoshizawa, Noritoshi Miura and Yoshisada Matsuzawa) in 17:49 when Blast Ikoma pinned Yoshisada Matsuzawa with a Northern Lights Bomb. [50]

4. The American Cobras defeated Team Taku in 10:07 when Storm Spillane submitted Toshinobu Taku with a Kneeling Boston Crab. The American Cobras advance to the next round of the TagMania 7 tournament. [55]

5. Mabuchi Furusawa and Tanyu Toshusai defeated Bunrakuken Torii and Naozane Goto in 17:46 when Mabuchi Furusawa submitted Naozane Goto with a Furusawa Armbar. [71]

~ Another big win for Pillars of Puroresu in the main event as Furusawa and Toshusai managed to defeat Torii and Goto. The former sumo wrestler saw his more experienced opponents focus on his legs in order to take him down to the mat and for all of Torii's attempts to fight back, Goto's leg eventually gave in and Furusawa was able to lock in the armbar for a tap.

~ Shocking win for The American Cobras, who eliminated BCG regulars Team Taku to advance in the TagMania 7 tournament. Though relatively new to the Japanese scene and fresh off defending their COTT Tag Team titles at an IPW show in Los Angeles, the Cobras pushed through the lingering effects of their war with Coulrophobia as well as jet lag to advance over Team Taku after a challenging match and they will be clashing with 3K in the next stage.

~ All it took was a nasty landing on one foot and just like that, Animal Harker went from being in control of a match to tearing his quad. Azumamaro Kita was declared the winner by Referee Tawaraya who threw up the dreaded X sign to call for the bell, leaving the ring with the third Challengers Series Medallion. First reports speak of Harker missing an entire year and BCG have already announced they will be covering any surgery expenses.

Findlay in the opener?!?! Give that man the BCG Title!

That sucks about Harper. Was the finish changed because of the injury? I always find it interesting when that happens!

Position in the card doesn't really matter for tour shows. Plus, as previously mentioned, Findlay kicked off January by dropping his physique to Flabby and injuring Razan Okamoto. Neither of those help his case.

The finish was indeed changed on the fly due to Harker's injury and although it was completely Harker's fault, I find it interesting that Kita has now been in two matches where his opponents got injured (Matsushita and now Harker). Maybe he's cursed. Maybe I could turn this into a crippler gimmick. :D

1.Big Bruiser Findlay and Giant Brody defeated Bunrakuken Torii and Naozane Goto in 18:06 when Big Bruiser Findlay pinned Naozane Goto with an Atomic Spinebuster. [57]

2. Miura & Yoshizawa defeated Sofu Ozawa and Yoriie Ippitsusai in 15:43 when Noritoshi Miura pinned Sofu Ozawa with The End Of The World. [40]

3. 3K defeated The American Cobras in 10:07 when Kiyotaka submitted Marvel Malloy with a Kimura. 3K advance to the finals of the TagMania 7 tournament. [56]

4. The Horror defeated Yokokawa & Sen in 9:54 when Abomination pinned Nobuharu Yokokawa with an Apocalypse Blast. The Horror advance to the finals of the TagMania 7 tournament. [56]

5. Mabuchi Furusawa and SUKI defeated Funakoshi and Blast Ikoma in 20:58 when SUKI submitted Blast Ikoma with a SUKI Special III. [76]

~ The TagMania 7 finals are now set, with 3K facing off against The Horror. Kamisaka & Kiyotaka had to fight hard for the win against the current COTT Tag Team champions The American Cobras, whereas Abomination & Monstrosity were merely held back for an even, competitive match by Yokokawa & Sen who avoided utter domination like Mitsukuri & Kinoshita before them.

~ Pillars wrapped up the touring section of TagMania with another big win, this time over the top two of Seven Samurai. This matchup is also scheduled to be the semi main event of the upcoming major show, so Furusawa and SUKI enter with a boosted morale, whereas Funakoshi and Ikoma will definately be gunning for a redemptive win.

Author's Note: For the record, despite playing as a smaller promotion using mostly handshake deals with its talent, from the start of this save I've had Mandatory Event Pre-Booking and Pre-Booking Bonuses activated. I think it fits the idea of announcing cards during a press conference before the tour begins, or matchups being set once someone wins a tournament or pins a champion. Effectively, this allows me to get a bonus for delivering matches I've announced and hyped up in advance, but I also get penalized if I run shows without enough interesting matches advertised or, as is now the case with Animal Harker's injury, don't deliver on the exact matchup promised.

Bunrakuken Torii & Naozane Goto vs Big Bruiser Findlay & Atto Savage

Big Bruiser Findlay and Animal Harker, collectively known as The Wild Ones, had been very vocal in their disappointment for not being included in this year’s TagMania tournament, but they would be in the main card of this final show, wrestling Torii and Goto in the opening match. That all changed when Harker tore his quad during the tour, at which point it was announced that he would be replaced by a mystery person. That person turned out to be the debuting Atto Savage, a man from the Pacific islands every bit as large, powerful and intimidating as his Big Bruiser teammate.

Savage started the match against Goto, who called for a test of strength. The two behemoths went back and forth with neither decisively winning, so Goto broke up the hold and suggested a shoving contest instead. Savage obliged and bounced off the ropes for a shoulder block that had his opponent stumbling, but the former sumo star didn’t even need the ropes to build up any momentum, as he exploded into a charge like a rhino, forcing Savage to a corner where he unloaded with several open palm strikes. Welcome to Black Canvas Grappling!

Goto then attempted to control his opponent’s head and bring him towards his corner, but Savage escaped and created some much needed separation with a nasty headbutt to Goto’s temple. This would allow the newcomer to showcase some of the moves in his arsenal, leading up to a sleeper hold during which he attempted to bite a chunk of Goto’s face off, shocking the audience with a spot they’d expect to see in Warrior Engine, not BCG. Savage and Findlay then took turns to wear down the former Challengers Series champion, putting the heat on him until the crowd was cheering for Torii to get the hot tag. When he did, he charged in and nailed Savage with his dreaded Spinning Forearm Smash, the impact sending the debuting wrestler to roll out of the ring, thus avoiding a pin. Findlay, much more familiar with Torii’s wrestling, was able to offer some resistance, but the fresher and hyped up leader of Dawnguard would eventually manage to back him into a corner and deliver his signature rapid fire machine gun chops which turned the Big Bruiser’s chest red. Torii’s offensive flurry was interrupted when he tried a flying version of his forearm smash and a recovered Savage pulled his leg from outside the ring. This would allow Findlay to get back on the wheel and eventually forced Torii to make the tag, Goto struggling to put up a fight after the 2 on 1 beating he’d taken earlier and eventually finding himself lifted up high and smashed to the mat with an Atomic Spinebuster from Findlay who scored the pin.

After the match, Findlay congratulated his teammate and offered him an official spot in the Bruiser Brigade. In response, Savage applied the Iron Claw and brought Findlay to his knees, nearly crushing the Big Bruiser’s skull. While the scene was unfolding, the speakers came to life with the unmistakable evil laughter of Dread, thus confirming that Atto Savage was actually another member of his Army.

In a bout that had great wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Atto Savage and Big Bruiser Findlay defeated Bunrakuken Torii and Naozane Goto in 9:51 when Big Bruiser Findlay pinned Naozane Goto with an Atomic Spinebuster. [58]

Yoriie Ippitsusai & Sharaku Okimasa vs Roku Sotomura & Sofu Ozawa

Sotomura and Ozawa’s challenge was answered by Ippitsusai and Okimasa, so it was no surprise that the match played out as a slow fuse technical masterclass, allowing the aging veterans to showcase their experience without exposing their physical shortcomings. The story in this match had to do with Ippitsusai and Okimasa trying to make up what they could for their elimination from the TagMania tournament, but there were subtler layers too, such as Okimasa being the only man under 35 in that ring or Sotomura having one of the three Challengers Series medallions, which he’d have to defend against anyone who might manage to pin or submit him. Although that didn’t happen in the end, Sotomura’s team did take the loss as Okimasa shone through and was able to apply the Scorpion Deathlock on Ozawa, who tapped out.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Ippitsusai & Okimasa defeated Roku Sotomura and Sofu Ozawa in 15:43 when Sharaku Okimasa submitted Sofu Ozawa with a Scorpion Deathlock. [44]

Dynamite Narahashi & Yoshisada Matsuzawa vs Giant Brody & Rokuemon Matsushita

Narahashi and Matsuzawa have a lot of things in common on top of being stablemates, but they were up against two behemoths in this bout. Fortunately for them, the two big men had some trouble working together, as Brody had recruitment in mind and Matsushita kept stubbornly saying no. This situation provided ample opportunities for Narahashi and Matsuzawa to get back in the match when things got too tough, allowing for a rather competitive match that on paper would sound way more one sided. The big finish saw the 6’9”, 326lb Brody hit his insane plancha dive onto Matsuzawa on the outside, ensuring that Matsushita could focus on tearing down Narahashi, who he ended up pinning after a One-Handed Choke Slam.

Despite the apparent teamwork, Matsushita once again turned Brody down and would not even celebrate the victory with him in the ring. As the announcing team mentioned, he had other things that concerned him now, namely a potential singles match against Narahashi for his Challengers Series Medallion. This in turn, as the announcers speculated, could mean that Roku Sotomura would be facing Azumamaro Kita too, with the winner leaving that match with two out of the three medallions in his possession.

In a decent match, Giant Brody and Rokuemon Matsushita defeated Dynamite Narahashi and Yoshisada Matsuzawa in 20:30 when Rokuemon Matsushita pinned Dynamite Narahashi with an One-Handed Choke Slam. [53]

Funakoshi & Blast Ikoma vs Mabuchi Furusawa & SUKI

If it weren’t for the TagMania tournament, this match up could -and should- have headlined the show. Less than a month after they faced off for the BCG World title, Funakoshi and Ikoma found themselves together against their GCG loyalist opponents. Between Dread’s invasion and the formation of Pillars, the two BCG originals were united in their defence of their home promotion and it showed in the match, where they cooperated to deliver hard hits and dangerous slams to their opponents.

Furusawa and SUKI weren’t just going to sit idle and take the blows, of course. If Seven Samurai had their boosted morale urging them on in this bout, the two top men of Pillars brought their superior wrestling skill as counterbalance. All four participants were hard hitters with a solid grasp of the basics, but what SUKI and especially Furusawa had for them was superior technical prowess. Indeed, on several occasions the match felt like a game of chess, with each side trying to outsmart the other, Samurai using unstoppable brute force to fight their way to the finish whereas Pillars opted to work specific limbs and wear them down in hopes of setting up a Furusawa Armbar or the SUKI Special III.

The turning point eventually came well after the 20 minute mark, when Ikoma’s leg gave in during a suplex attempt and SUKI managed to flip through the launch, impressively landing on his feet before countering with a penalty kick. Ikoma was failing, perhaps struggling with a leg injury even, which meant Funakoshi had to make up for it. Never one to back down, BCG’s Lionheart gave everything he had, but in what was essentially a handicap match by that point, he was too spent to pull off a miracle. To his credit though, the champion never submitted once he found himself in SUKI’s submission finisher and Referee Tawaraya had to call for a stoppage in order to avoid an injury due to Funakoshi’s sheer stubbornness and unyielding spirit. Still, Pillars of Puroresu were declared the winners and SUKI officially laid the challenge down, saying he tapped out the BCG World champion and now demanded a title match for his belt.

In a bout that had superb wrestling and great heat, Mabuchi Furusawa and SUKI defeated Funakoshi and Blast Ikoma in 24:47 when SUKI submitted Funakoshi with a SUKI Special III. [77]

3K vs The Horror

Unlike the slow paced and dramatic match before it, this one was its polar opposite. The Horror were looking to wrap it up fast and had not just the power to do it but also the surprising athleticism for men their size. 3K found themselves outside of familiar slow mat grappling territory but they were able to kick things into next gear and keep up with their opponents, substituting grinding submissions for a more fluid style of transitions, chain wrestling and the occasional slam when they had a chance to pull it off. Abomination and Monstrosity simply sought to beat their opponents to paste with their simple, but highly effective brawling style that made good use of their strong points. When they finally hit the Apocalypse Blast on Kiyotaka, it was clear he wouldn’t be getting up, and he didn’t. Less than a month since first appearing in BCG, The Horror had now won TagMania, outwrestled and defeated former World Tag Team champions while earning a shot at the reigning ones, Yoshizawa & Miura.

In one last show of disrespect, The Horror simply grabbed their trophies and left the ring, without pausing to pose for the photographers, accept flowers or address the fans. Unbelievable.

In a bout that had great wrestling but didn't have much heat, The Horror defeated 3K in 10:10 when Monstrosity pinned Kiyotaka with an Apocalypse Blast. The Horror win BCG TagMania 7. [68]</div>

The Horror: "This is only the beginning... The World Tag Team titles are the next step towards domination. You shall all... live... in fear!"

SUKI: "Tonight, we proved why we are the Pillars of Puroresu, the men that hold this company, nay, this sport in the esteemed position it's in. Funakoshi is always a challenge to wrestle against, but I made him tap tonight and I will make him tap again when we meet for the World title."

Blast Ikoma: "Our opponents were the better team tonight and they deserved to win. I did not do my part and I could not support Funakoshi like I wanted. I have much to think about, this defeat shall be a lesson that makes me stronger."

Rokuemon Matsushita: "Everyone's joining factions left and right, but I'm not wasting my focus on politics. Tonight I beat Narahashi and after I beat him again for his Medallion, I'll go on to collect all three and claim the Challengers Series title. That's what it's all about. Titles, not factions."</div>

BCG Lionheart 2020 Press Conference Highlights

9LeZHLM.jpgscGe4sP.png

~ As is tradition in Black Canvas, the Press Conference began with the introduction of new roster members. Already boasting a rather robust roster, BCG announced the acquisition of former GCG Openweight champion, Masashi Urogataya and "The Indiana Strangler" Conner Threepwood for the upcoming tour. Given his past, it was no surprise that Urogataya immediately joined his fellow GCG alumni as a member of Pillars of Puroresu, whereas Threepwood simply stated he's glad to have signed and hopes to showcase what he can do on the black mat.

PjUyYaN.pngc6hR1Sj.jpgWBJHqx5.jpgRVNsc1B.pngHXpE6z7.jpg

~ As expected, two matches for the Challengers Series Medallions were also announced, furthering the process by which the next challenger for the title is determined. After pinning Dynamite Narahashi in a tag match at TagMania, Rokuemon Matsushita was officially granted an opportunity to wrestle a Medallion out of Narahashi, while the other two holders, Kita and Sotomura, will be facing each other in an all or nothing situation. Current champion Tanyu Toshusai was also present and commented he'll be happy to face either man for the title, although he also added he is confident that regardless of who ends up challenging him, he can beat them to retain the belt.

~ Dread's Army made an appearance in full force, now with Atto Savage in their ranks, though they refused to answer any questions by the journalists. What the four men did do however, was reveal the new logo for their faction.

MOUXi3u.jpgchR5Y96.jpgceDGfhh.jpg

~ Unlike their challengers in Dread's Army, Yoshizawa and Miura took the time to answer questions by the press, stating they worried by what they saw of The Horror during the TagMania tournament, but feel extra motivated to fight as they defend not just the BCG World Tag Team titles, but apparently the entire company against this new invading group. Big Bruiser Findlay wasn't as heroic though, the big man from Cobb County, GA pointing out that things between him and Atto Savage are personal. According to the Big Bruiser, it was Savage who decided to make things personal when he attacked him after their match and Findlay vowed to have his revenge for being stabbed in the back.

2C2TFxV.jpgQdKNLA8.jpg

~ Fans and wrestling pundits may be debating whether the term "Lionheart" was coined for the upcoming tour before Funakoshi got it as a nickname or if the show was dubbed as such in honor and recognition of the man, the fact remains that this year it will be a very symbolic one for the reigning and defending BCG World champion. SUKI wasn't shy about actually bringing up the fact, commenting that a title win over Funakoshi in Black Canvas, at Lionheart, would feel like three victories in one due to the occasion. The ever stoic Funakoshi had much less to say though and merely said he will do his best, like he always does, to defend the title, the company, fans who believe in him and of course, his personal sense of honor.

BCG Lionheart - Night 1 in Kobe, Kansai Region

Mon. W4 February 2020

676 Fans

1. Seven Samurai (Roku Sotomura, Nobuharu Yokokawa and Sojuro Sen) defeated Azumamaro Kita, Sharaku Okimasa and Takenori Doi in 10:13 when Nobuharu Yokokawa submitted Takenori Doi with a Stump Puller. [52]

2. Conner Threepwood and The American Cobras defeated Dawnguard (Naozane Goto, Ichiro Mitsukuri and Koyo Kinoshita) in 16:09 when Conner Threepwood submitted Koyo Kinoshita with a Stretch Plum. [41]

3. Atto Savage and Omezo Shikitei defeated Big Bruiser Findlay and Giant Brody in 10:06 when Atto Savage submitted Giant Brody with a Cannibal Claw. [57]

4. Dread Army (FEAR, Abomination and Monstrosity) defeated Okamoto-gun (Yoshisada Matsuzawa, Inejiro Yoshizawa and Noritoshi Miura) in 9:34 when FEAR pinned Yoshisada Matsuzawa with a Fear Drive. [57]

5. Seven Samurai (Funakoshi, Blast Ikoma, Kadonomaro Kamisaka and Kiyotaka) defeated Pillars of Puroresu (SUKI, Tanyu Toshusai, Danjuro Kikuchi and Ryobe Uno) in 18:05 when Kiyotaka submitted Ryobe Uno with a Kimura. [63]

~ Seven Samurai drew first blood in the main event as the tour ends with Funakoshi defending the BCG World title against SUKI. Pillars paid for Uno's inexperience and the young wrestler cost his team the match, despite otherwise putting on a decent performance, though nowhere near up to par with everyone else.

~ Dominant showings from Dread Army, with victories in their respective matches. Yoshizawa and Miura try to hold the fort, but apparently things are very tough for the group in the absence of its leader. Meanwhile, Omezo Shikitei somehow survived in a match full of giants, making good use of his striking offense and submission arsenal to soften up Brody and Findlay so that Savage could take it home.

~ Conner Threepwood began his BCG career off the right foot, earning the victory for his team with his Stretch Plum submission finisher. Things weren't as good for young Takenori Doi, who got a match in the opening bout of the main show, but ultimately fell to the veteran Yokokawa.

~ Two nil for Funakoshi's group over Pillars of Puroresu with the champion himself making a statement as he hit the newcomer Urogataya with his Butterfly Backbreaker for the pin. Having the veterans Yokokawa & Sen by his side didn't hurt him either, although SUKI and the Challengers Series champion Tanyu Toshusai were no slouches either, but apparently Urogataya is either struggling with a bit of ring rust or finding his footing in BCG.</span></p><p><span style="color:#F5DEB3;"> </span></p><p><span style="color:#F5DEB3;">

~ Hellbent on revenge, Big Bruiser Findlay unloaded on Atto Savage whenever they were together in the ring and it appears the two are headed for an intense one on one clash at the end of the tour. Okimasa found himself stuck between big powerhouses and his submission style was hard to apply, thus he ended up as the one getting pinned after a chokeslam from Giant Brody.</span></p><p><span style="color:#F5DEB3;"> </span></p><p><span style="color:#F5DEB3;">

~ TagMania 7 winners The Horror made a statement when they pinned one of the World Tag Team champions in this show and it looks like they're going all out on claiming the belts from Yoshizawa & Miura. Good two tour shows. Loving the Strangler getting a win in his debut!

Thanks.

I've ran all the shows up to and including Lionheart. Still debating whether I should do the proper full roster presentation before or after the Maeda GP Press Conference. But there is still time and shows to write out till then.
