Great show! Wonder how Sting's popularity has veen affected by the Bam Bam loss?

Barely affected at all given the tainted, manager-influenced outcome. However, Bam Bam went up 5 points in most areas where the show was broadcast since his debut.

This has been a fun read for a slow day at work this morning. Excited to see where this goes.

Thanks! Glad to have you aboard.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

WEEK FOUR - JANUARY 1992

FROM HEART O’ TEXAS FAIR COMPLEX

v4pxe0J.jpgRO3hoYI.jpgwPqC9Xg.jpg

ANNOUNCE TEAM: JIM ROSS, TONY SCHIAVONE, AND DUSTY RHODES

<hr>

0vfnPLK.jpg

Harley Race is out with his “three-headed hydra” of big, bad, and dangerous individuals– Big Van Vader, Bam Bam Bigelow, and Mr. Hughes. Race says they will succeed where others have failed, and they will tear down the heroes of World Championship Wrestling one-by-one.

BIG, BAD, AND DANGEROUS

(BIG VAN VADER, BAM BAM BIGELOW, AND MR. HUGHES)

w/ HARLEY RACE

VERSUS

THE WCW PATRIOTS

(THE PATRIOT, FIREBREAKER CHIP, AND TODD CHAMPION)

Harley's "hydra" of Big, Bad, and Dangerous make short work of the faces in the opener, disposing of them in a three-minute squah.

WINNERS: BIG, BAD, AND DANGEROUS

<hr>

FKi3DWS.jpgdhQoVhr.jpg

JUSHIN THUNDER LIGER

VERSUS

AVATAR

The masked Avatar is making his World Championship Wrestling debut this weekend, having already already lost to Ultimo Dragon on Main Event. The announcers put over that he is an American citizen who trained for years in Japanese temples and shrines to become the masked Avatar we see before us today. None of that helps him to overcome the international sensation that is Jushin Thunder Liger, who picks up a win with a Liger Bomb after an impressive contest.

WINNER: JUSHIN THUNDER LIGER

NON-TITLE MATCH

THE ENFORCERS ©

(ARN ANDERSON & LARRY ZBYSZKO)

w/ PAUL E. DANGEROUSLY

VERSUS

HARLEM HEAT

(BOOKER T & STEVIE RAY)

The newcomers look very impressive, but they're no match for the WCW World Tag Team Champions. Anderson pins Booker T after a Spinebuster.

WINNERS: THE ENFORCERS

r1CrpWp.jpg

After the match, Dangerously grabs a microphone and goes on yet another rant about the WCW Board of Directors, mentioning that they can't keep their list of executives straight but they want to hand out punishments to The Dangerous Alliance. If this is the game they want to play, then "let's play ball, scarecrow," Dangerously says, but he also offers a warning to end things, saying, "I don't play well with others."

<hr>

nGbTQuL.jpg5Fl63aS.jpg

SHANE DOUGLAS

VERSUS

"BEAUTIFUL" BOBBY EATON

w/ PAUL E. DANGEROUSLY

A good TV match between these two, Douglas looking good at every turn and Eaton making him shine. The finish comes when Douglas reverses an Irish whip, Dangerously whacking Eaton with his cellphone because he was expecting Douglas. Eaton stumbles forward into a Belly-to-Belly Suplex, which the announce team notes is a tribute to Magnum T.A., and Douglas picks up the win.

WINNER: SHANE DOUGLAS

After the match, Eaton jumps Douglas before he can even be announced as the winner. He and Dangerously put the boots to Douglas for just a moment before...

EmEhbwv.jpg

Marcus Alexander Bagwell comes charging out with taped up ribs to make the save. He's had his own issues with The Dangerous Alliance as of late, including the rib injury, and he's not going to stand by and watch it happen to someone else! Bagwell saves Douglas from the beatdown while Dangerously and Eaton make a tactical retreat.

<hr>

hAS8j0I.jpg

Barry Windham is backstage with Eric Bischoff for a promo, saying he's had all he can take of The Dangerous Alliance. He might not be 100%, he's still wearing the glove, but he doesn't need to be 100% to take his revenge on The Enforcers, especially Larry Zbyszko. Superbrawl II, he and "The Natural" Dustin Rhodes are invoking their rematch clause. "It's time for the last dance, gentlemen," he ends by saying.

<hr>

LXWaJA1.jpgAo1Lc4d.jpg

”MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF

VERSUS

“HEAVY METAL” VAN HAMMER

Van Hammer looks very impressive against the much more seasoned Orndorff, who started off his WCW return inauspiciously with a pair of losses. Determined to right the ship this week, Orndorff cheats at every turn, raking eyes, pulling hair, even getting caught with his feet on the ropes during a pinfall at one point. In the end, it’s an unseen low blow by Orndorff that sets up a Piledriver and the tainted victory.

WINNER: PAUL ORNDORFF

<hr>

Sting is out in front of the crowd with Eric Bischoff for an interview where he says he’s had just about enough of The Dangerous Alliance. He can’t even focus on his upcoming WCW World Heavyweight Championship match because Paul E. and his goons are waiting at every turn. If that wasn't enough, now Harley Race has a “hungry hydra” looking for The Stinger as well. Before he can say much else, “Stunning” Steve Austin is out with Madusa Miceli to interrupt and throw shade at Sting. Austin says it’s only a matter of time before Sting succumbs to the waves and lets the current pull him under to drown.

WCW TELEVISION TITLE MATCH

"STUNNING" STEVE AUSTIN ©

w/ MADUSA MICELI

VERSUS

STING

Austin and Sting brawl their way into the ring after the argument, and the bell rings while they're in the midst of fighting. The pair don’t let up, keeping a fast pace throughout the match even when Madusa tries to insert herself before being ejected from ringside. That leaves Sting and Austin one-on-one for the closing minutes of the match; Sting locks in the Scorpion Deathlock and nearly gets the submission victory, but Austin manages to fight through the pain to a time limit draw.

WINNER: TIME LIMIT DRAW, STEVE AUSTIN RETAINS WCW TELEVISION TITLE

<hr>

Before our main event, Missy Hyatt is joined by Paul E. Dangerously and “Ravishing” Rick Rude for a promo. Dangerously reminds everyone that Rick Rude will not speak until the Board of Directors are removed from power in World Championship Wrestling while Rude stands behind him looking smug. Dangerously vows that the world will witness the end of Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat tonight on World Championship Wrestling

WCW UNITED STATES TITLE MATCH

“RAVISHING” RICK RUDE ©

w/ PAUL E. DANGEROUSLY

VERSUS

RICKY “THE DRAGON” STEAMBOAT

Rick Rude looks vicious to start the match, but Steamboat isn't to be held down. Another solid television main event on the flagship show tarnished by the involvement of Paul E. Dangerously. The last time Rude and Steamboat met, Dangerously used his phone to pull a ruse but this time he had every intention of hitting Steamboat with it behind the referee's back. But, for the second time on the same show, Dangerously connects with the wrong man! While Dangerously screams on the outside for Rude to kick out, Steamboat pins him for the three-count and the title! Steamboat celebrates in the ring while Dangerously helps Rude to the back to end the show.

WINNER, AND NEW WCW UNITED STATES CHAMPION: RICKY STEAMBOAT

A stacked show that delivered! Dick Dude is gonna be pissed at Paul E. Looking forward to the fallout from that. I initially thought about calling a draw in the TV title match, but changed my mind unfortunately. Historian had it right! Austin being on the same level as Sting in 92 is great.

I'm usually not a big fan of pre-NWO WCW dynasties because the era was before my time, but I'm really liking this! The combo of the Dangerous Alliance and Race's "Hydra" has been particularly interestin.

Glad to have you aboard! This was around the time I first discovered WCW as a child, so it's a dear time in my wrestling heart.

WATCHING WRESTLING WITH WENDELL

FEBRUARY 1992

WRITTEN AND EDITED BY WENDELL WHITE

------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello wrestling fans, welcome back to Watching Wrestling. This month we will settle into a little more of a rhythm with the reporting, and cover more than just the big scoop from World Championship Wrestling– and there is another big scoop to get to from Atlanta!

First, however, my sources in Stamford tell me that Nikolai Volkoff, Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, and Haku are all gone from the World Wrestling Federation while Marty Jannetty has recently signed an extension. But the big news to cover coming out of the Royal Rumble last month is that Jake “The Snake” Roberts is your new World Wrestling Federation World Heavyweight Champion! Word is the reign is a make-good on a promise Vince McMahon made to Roberts years ago, but what an interesting time to keep that promise with such a loaded roster! “Nature Boy” Ric Flair won the Rumble match itself, so it looks like we’re going to get Roberts vs Flair at WrestleMania which is an… interesting choice of match-up when fans are aching to see Flair take on Hulk Hogan in a match of the megastars. Maybe we’ll still get that without the title on the line, but it’s fair to say there are more questions than answers as to the WrestleMania card at this time.

Moving on to my bread & butter, World Championship Wrestling, and there’s a lot to report! FIrst and foremost, “The Total Package” Lex Luger has given his notice and will be exiting the company imminently. Word is that management is desperately trying to work out a deal to keep him around through Superbrawl II, but no word yet on any progress being made or if he will even come back to television to drop the World Heavyweight title before leaving. Word is that this has nothing to do with Eric Bischoff taking control of the company, but is more the culmination of months of unhappiness.

But, speaking of Eric Bischoff, word is that change is afoot in the company sooner rather than later. There are plans to introduce a new logo, as well as rebrand the flagship Saturday evening programming; the “World Championship Wrestling” name has been used ever since Ted Turner acquired Jim Crockett Promotions but is now being utilized as the company name so Bischoff would like to avoid market confusion. There has been talk of using the WCW Worldwide name, and rebranding that syndicated show, however nothing has been made official as I write this. I’ve also heard plans of using the name “WCW Saturday Night,” to play on WWF’s “Saturday Night’s Main Event,” but, again, nothing official yet.

These changes come on the heels of some different presentation choices in the flagship show, including more competitive matches for the main events and a focus on new talent. Word is that Eric Bischoff is very high on the Light Heavyweight division and the excitement their matches bring to show, and has plans to expand the division and there is evidence to support this claim if you look at the roster that has been working in Power Plant Pro Wrestling for their first handful of show: Chris Candido, Chris Jericho, Lance Storm, Eddie Guerrero, Lightning Kid, and Jerry Lynn all among them. Which isn’t to say they aren’t without their heavyweights: shoot fighter Ken Shamrock claimed the Power Plant National Championship over Doug Basham on their first show, Jeff Jarrett became Power Plant Showcase Champion by defeating Glamor Boy Shane, and monsters like Nitron, Wrath, and Doomsday were all seen on the card as well. I’m also receiving word that some members of the WCW roster will be “demoted” to Power Plant Pro soon, while still working the occasional main roster show.

Turning to Superbrawl II and the short-term future of storylines, as I mentioned earlier, the long rumored Superbrawl II main event of Lex Luger versus Sting is in jeopardy. Word is that Big Van Vader will be positioned as a top heel going forward, which raises some questions about the future of The Dangerous Alliance and the members of that faction. Paul E. Dangerously has been railing against the WCW Board of Directors on television in recent weeks as the faction has taken a noticeable backseat to Harley Race’s “Hydra” of monsters (no word yet on an official name for the faction even though they’ve teased the Big, Bad, and Dangerous name from Japan). I’m also hearing rumblings about plans to unify the World and United States Tag Team Championships in the near future as Bischoff feels that having two sets of tag team titles detracts from the division rather than adding to it.

That’s all I’ve got for you this month! See you in March.

-Wendell White.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING ON TBS

PREVIEW - WEEK FOUR - JANUARY 1992

The WCW Board of Directors have spoken, and we have a blockbuster main event this week on World Championship Wrestling! It will be WCW World Heavyweight Champion “The Total Package” Lex Luger defending his title against the number one ranked contender, the winner of Battle Bowl, the man they call Sting!

At a recent WCW live event, one half of the WCW United States Tag Team Champions, Steve Armstrong, was injured and will be unable to fulfill his commitments to defend the belts. After the team’s recent actions, Tracy Smothers was unable to find an interim partner and so the Board of Directors has decided that the Young Pistols will have to forfeit their titles. This Saturday, we’ll see a match to determine the NEW champions as former champions The Steiner Brothers take on former WCW World Tag Team Champions Barry Windham and “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes!

Cactus Jack and Abdullah the Butcher have had their share of differences lately, the former tag team partners waging war on one another at all turns. Will the ring even be able to contain these two this Saturday night?

We’ll also see members of The Dangerous Alliance in singles and tag team action! All of this and much, much more, this Saturday on TBS!
