The Ariel Helwani Show

on YouTube

February 8, 2022

--------------------

TaJeB0y.pngG6JqyxK.png

We pick up in the middle of an interview on The Ariel Helwani Show between Ariel and Shane McMahon. Earlier in the show, Ariel and McMahon covered the controversial and unceremonious release of Shane McMahon from the WWE following the Royal Rumble. The frustration is obvious, but there has also been a tone of relief in the voice of Shane.

Ariel Helwani

As we have discussed, the last week has to have been a whirlwind of emotions. Is there any animosity you hold towards the WWE for your release? Or is there also a little bit of hurt you have from the professional wrestling industry and audience from what happened at and after the Royal Rumble?

Shane McMahon

Animosity? No not at all. I was tasked with the job of putting together the Royal Rumble and the response was not on par with what the company and the fans wanted. In a lot of ways, I grew up with the WWE, ways that no one else on the planet can relate. I remember being a child hanging around backstage, getting put in a locker by the guys as a ritualistic prank.

I was putting up the ring and getting beers with the guys before I was of legal age. No matter how much stock they sell, it will always be a family business. I've always known my father has had a business to run, and I wouldn't have expected any different. Hell, I probably would have done the same thing.

Ariel Helwani

What about the industry of wrestling and the fans as a whole?

Shane McMahon

If you want my honest opinion, I think the wrestling business has become stale. The emergence of AEW has freshened it up some, but when you think wrestling, you think "World Wrestling Entertainment". I don't blame the fans one bit for being frustrated and their frustration towards me as an on-screen character. It can't be fun to watch the boss' son and a person you wouldn't call a wrestler be booked like Brock Lesnar. I love this business and I love the fans. They deserve the best and I don't think they are getting that right now.

Ariel Helwani

You have talked about how you have a unique relationship with the business, and with all of your experience, what do you believe is holding wrestling back?

Shane McMahon

Wow, what a weighted question! To spare everyone watching this, I'll try not to ramble like a madman. WWE can worry about AEW all they want, but I think WWE and wrestling in general has fell off since sports media has grown into a giant. ESPN is on millions of TVs all day, every day, providing sports as a story and athletes a microphone to endear themselves to fans 24/7. Ariel, you are an MMA guy, who gives a better "wrestling" promo than Conor McGregor? A Red Sox-Yankees game in June feels more intense than the main event of a WrestleMania. Fans are responding much more to legitimacy or at least stories rooted in competition. AEW has packaged themselves as matches that actually matter, but I don't think they've followed through on that promise. WWE only pushes two or three wrestlers in the men's division as legitimate threats and 50/50 book everyone else. If the companies putting on the shows don't really care about the outcomes of the matches, why should the fans?

Ariel Helwani

That seems like a tricky proposition to ask of the wrestling business. How do you package something...ahem...predetermined as legit as a UFC fight or a baseball game?

Shane McMahon

Something that a lot of the old-timers in the wrestling business do not want to admit, as they scream "You killed kayfabe!" at the clouds, is wrestling fans are extremely talented at suspending disbelief. Everyone is told "wrestling is fake" when they are young, doesn't stop them from being in awe of The Undertaker or crying at someone like Bryan Danielson winning at WrestleMania XXX. On top of that, everyone in the sports world tries to capitalize on the pomp and circumstance of wrestling. Ask Bryan Danielson, ask Ric Flair. Funny story, I met with an owner of a NHL franchise and the head of an up-and-coming sport overseas to discuss a project that I have been working on since my release.

Ariel Helwani

Wow, getting right back in the saddle with the business deals, huh?

Shane McMahon

I am the type of man who has to be moving and shaking, something that Vince has instilled in me and it is a part of me that I am proud of, Ariel. Well these men were aware that the project had to do with wrestling, but immediately thought it was a marketing partnership with the WWE. Sports franchises have been able to parlay wrestling tropes into crowd support for their sport, but wrestling doesn't do the same with sports ideas. There are things left over from the territory and carny days that do not fit. I've always thought the best way to make things matter, is to make things matter, make every pinfall or submission matter, make every bit of trash talk matter. It is time for a wrestling company to make things matter.

Not sure if Shane McMahon followed through on his own promise of not sounding like a madman with his last diatribe, but it is obvious that he is passionate about wrestling. The interview fades into the two gushing over current MMA fighters and Shane's foray in the disciplines of martial arts.

The video opens with Shane McMahon on a set that is likened to what you would see on SportsCenter or an NHL intermission show. Shane stands behind a modernized podium that has the FOX Sports logo on the front. We can tell that Shane McMahon plans to make good on his tweet from yesterday, echoing the presentation his father had for his XFL announcement not so long ago.

Shane McMahon

Hello and welcome to the first moments that will change the way the world sees professional wrestling. For too long, professional wrestling has been packaged as silly or a car crash. The talent that has graced our television over the past decade deserve more. The fans that are forced to reluctantly watch as wrestling companies make a joke of themselves deserve more. That is why I have teamed with FOX Sports to bring competition that wrestling fans have never seen before. Today, we are proud to announce the future of professional wrestling...the National Wrestling League.

WfDXVka.png

This logo graces the giant screen behind McMahon, as we cut to the logo taking up the screen. As the gold of the logo gleams, powerful drums beat in the background and eventually we hear the sounds of a buzzing arena. We cut back to Shane who has a smile that can only be described as the smile of a man who has finally had everything click.

Shane McMahon

The National Wrestling League is wrestling in a way that people haven't seen in nearly a century, wrestling as a sport. The wrestlers of today deserve to hone their skills in an environment where there skills can be displayed fully. Fans will find the stakes are higher and their attachment to wrestlers will be closer than ever, as wrestlers will no longer be vying for individual supremacy. The wrestlers of the National Wrestling League will begin divided into six teams, each representing a city. In a time where the outcome of matches mean less and less, the NWL will make every pinfall, submission, count-out, etcetera mean something. The teams will face-off in a scored series of matches to determine a winner of that night's 'game'. We will expand on that more later on, because I know that some of this will be a culture shock when it comes to wrestling. I know a lot of you at home are begging to see what teams will be competing in the 2022 NWL Season, so without further ado...

qVm6Nw0.pngHJVWt96.png8YxfEqv.png

ZPpCULG.png7gyo7NL.pngZWnh5JU.png

Shane McMahon

Our inaugural six teams of the National Wrestling League are the Chicago Wolfpack, the New York Knights, the Texas Sandstorm, the Los Angeles Wrestling Club, the Miami Bite, and the Washington War Eagles. These teams will compete against each other throughout a season from the beginning of March to the end of December, then the NWL Playoffs to determine the first NWL Champion. When you have men competing at a high-level to win, there is bound to be injuries. That is why we are also introducing a feeder league that will effectively act as the minor leagues for the NWL, the NWL: Futures League.

KQSmJfo.png

Shane McMahon

I'm sure a lot of you are thinking "Why should I have high expectations from someone who isn't a wrestler?", and I had the same reservations about myself. That is why I called on a friend of mine to help me navigate this new path in professional wrestling. Hopefully he is better at breaking down barriers in the business with me than he was at breaking glass with suplexes. I introduce to you the Commissioner of the National Wrestling League, Olympic gold medalist...Kurt Angle!

BOEhhbL.png

The undeniable legend and actual sports hero, Kurt Angle strolls onto the set with vigor. You can tell that he is excited to be a part of this project, that although innovative, is a risk. He stand in front of a large screen that has the NWL logo and begins to address the audience.

Kurt Angle

Oh it's real, it's damn real! When Shane told me about this project, I was skeptical, but the more I thought about it...I knew I had to be a part of this. If I were still in my prime, you know that I would be in the NWL making people tap! I am a little upset that my hometown, Pittsburgh, is not represented, but maybe one day. Okay, lets get down to business. As the NWL Commissioner, I will handle making sure the league runs smoothly. Shane has asked me to help him with outlining rules for the league, and what I have came up with will change wrestling forever. The teams will be made up of four wrestlers, three that will participate in the games and one reserve. Trying to find a link to professional sports such as baseball or football was tough, but I believe we have cracked the code. All games will be made up of three periods, each period being a 15-minute Iron Man match, where all falls count towards the teams score. The team with the most falls at the end of the 3rd period wins. In the case of ties after three periods, the teams will compete in a sudden death three-on-three tag match. This link to hockey is a natural partner to this layout and I believe it will be a treat for the audience. Each team will play the other five teams eight times, equaling a 40-game regular season. We then move to the NWL Playoffs that have 3-5-7 format and the top two teams of the regular season getting first-round byes. If anyone has questions, I will do my best to answer them if you contact me on Twitter @RealKurtAngle. Now back to Shane to tell you guys about what is next for the National Wrestling League.

Shane McMahon

Thank you, Kurt, I am glad to have one of the greatest WRESTLERS helping me through this exciting process. There will be a lot of wrestling coming to your living rooms and on your sports bar screens come March, as we will have games every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday nights on FOX Sports 2. Now, I'm guessing a lot of you want to know what wrestlers will be representing the teams and maybe your city, but we would like to leave some things as a surprise. Next Monday on FOX Sports 2, we will have the NWL Draft, where representative coaches/GMs for each team will select the rosters of the six NWL teams and their minor league affiliates. We look forward to seeing you there!

National Wrestling League Draft

on FOX Sports 2

February 22, 2022

--------------------

yLkWzmd.png

The show opens up on Shane McMahon standing at a podium with the NWL logo on the front. He is ready to address a medium-sized crowd full of the members of the professional wrestling media.

Shane McMahon

Hello and welcome to the inaugural Nation Wrestling League Draft! Tonight is effectively the first night of the 2022 NWL Season and the beginning of what we hope will be a rich legacy for our six teams. Tonight, our teams will select their full "major league" roster and the NWL: Futures League rosters will be announced online shortly after. Rest assured, there will be some familiar faces selected tonight and some exciting prospects that have honed their skills on the independents. The wrestlers that have been made available to the league ensures that we will be delivering exciting matches and nail-biting games this year and for the foreseeable future. I wish all of the teams the best of luck tonight and I look forward to the 2022 NWL Season making wrestling history. Now, I am handing things over to the NWL Commissioner, Kurt Angle, to discuss the rules of the draft and kick things off!

BOEhhbL.png

As Shane McMahon walks off the stage and Kurt Angle walks on, the two exchange a cheeky high-five. It is obvious that this project makes both of these men very excited and this event tonight is a real milestone for both of these mens' wrestling careers.

Kurt Angle

Ladies and gentlemen, are we excited to get the National Wrestling League Draft underway? I know that all of the fans at home and members of the media have been speculating on the order in which the teams will be drafted. Earlier today, I met with the representatives of our teams to have a draft lottery. The teams were selected at random to determine their draft order. That order is as follows:

1. Texas Sandstorm

2. Washington War Eagles

3. Chicago Wolfpack

4. New York Knights

5. Los Angeles Wrestling Club

6. Miami Bite

Kurt Angle

Those familiar with many sports league draft know that usually drafts follow a usual order throughout the draft. The NWL Draft is no exception, the whole draft will be ran in snake order, meaning the draft will go from pick one to pick six and the next will go from pick six to pick one. Now that we have that out of the way, the Texas Sandstorm is now on the clock!

Round 1

Round 1: Pick 1

Texas Sandstorm

Ted DiBiase

How are we doing tonight, Sandstorm fans?! Everyone has a price and that includes the NWL and Shane McMahon! Ha ha ha ha! That is why I, Ted DiBiase, is the first head coach and general manager of the Texas Sandstorm. The great people of Dallas are going to be excited for who I am selecting first overall...Cody Rhodes!

Dutch Mantel

Those familiar with my most recent work can tell you that I am the model patriot, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that I have been named the leader of the Washington War Eagles. Only I have the integrity to represent our great country's capital, and along with this man, the War Eagles will run the NWL with honor. The first man to call themself a Washington War Eagle is Adam Scherr!

Kevin Nash

When Shane asked me if I wanted to be a part of his new wrestling company, I thought he was wanting "Big Daddy Cool" to come in and take out the competition. I spent too much fixing my body, but my mind is still as good as ever. In the NWL, the big boys are going to be playing in Chicago, and that all starts with Claudio Castagnoli!

William Regal

I have traveled the world for most of my life, learning everything there is about professional wrestling. I have trained some of the best in the business today. The New York Knights are going to be the most educated and disciplined team in the NWL. There is one man in wrestling that has both of those traits and has them in spades, that man is Joe Senoa!

Lucha libre is in my blood and I am going to make sure that it is in the blood of the National Wrestling League. The Los Angeles Wrestling Club is going to bring that style to every team they face and will take it all the way to the NWL Championship. With the first pick in LAWC history, I am selecting a man that do things most other men can't dream of, I select John Hennigan!

Miami Bite

RNA6Q2l.png

Ken Shamrock

I have always brought something different to a wrestling ring, and that's what I'm going to do again in the NWL with the Miami Bite. Why pin them when you can knock them out? Nothing gets the blood pumping like making your opponent tap! This man knows about making people tap and that man is Miami's first pick Johnny Gargano!

Instead of predicting the outright winner of a match, you will be predicting a team's ability to win or lose by a certain amount. (-1.5) means the team must win by more than (1.5) falls and (+1.5) means a team must lose by no more than (1.5) falls. For example, if the Chicago Wolfpack beats the New York Knights 4-2 then betting on Chicago Wolfpack(-1.5) would win. Contrarily, if the Chicago Wolfpack wins 5-4 then Chicago Wolfpack(-1.5) would lose. On the other side of the example, if the New York Knights lose 4-2 then betting on New York Knights(+1.5) would lose. If the New York Knights lose 5-4 then New York Knights(+1.5) would win. If the underdog (+1.5) wins the game, then that bet would win no matter the score.</p><p> </p><p> I will be keeping track of everyone's picks as the season goes on. Everyone who makes a bet would be given 120 credits to "bet" for the season, each "bet" being for one credit. You are able to abstain from betting on any game you want if you are not confident in the outcome. With that being said, everyone participating must make at least 60 separate bets to be eligible for the competition. The winner of the competition will get to pick the host city (among a list of 10) of one of the expansion teams that will be coming in the future.</p><p> </p><p> I know this is more complicated than the usual pick-a-wrestler predictions so if you have any questions go ahead and reply with any queries. Thanks!</p>

Chicago Wolfpack(-1.5) @ New York Knights(+1.5)

I think the Wolfpack are good enough to get a clear win over the Knights

Washington War Eagles (+1.5) @ Texas Sandstorm (-1.5)

I think the War Eagles line up is good enough to win

Miami Bite (+1.5) @ Los Angeles Wrestling Club (-1.5)

I think LAW is good enough to defeat the Bite, but not by a clear cut margin

Great concept, I love this idea for a dynasty. The team series type things like World X Cup and such have always appealed to me. The spread style of betting has always been confusing to me, but I'll give it a go!

--------------------

ASJrF89.pngnIn6JRd.pngXZ6tSaz.png

Hideki Suzuki vs. Chris Hero

  • The first match in NWL history started the way a sport should, extreme competition. Both men show their technical prowess in an exchange of hold a near misses.
  • Time felt like it was ticking away in super-speed as they attempted to find an advantage. These men could have gone forever, but you could tell the ref was exhausted from all the two counts.
  • Suzuki nearly had a fall after nailing a Saito suplex, but Hero kicked out at two. Chris Hero reversed Suzuki's Double-Arm Suplex into a Hero's Welcome to get a pinfall before time expired (1-0)

Match Result: Chris Hero def. Hideki Suzuki (1-0)

We are backstage with NWL Lead Reporter, Renee Paquette, and the NWL Commissioner, Kurt Angle. Both look excited that we are finally here at the first game in NWL history.

Renee Paquette

Hello everyone, I am Renee Paquette and I am here with the NWL Commissioner, Kurt Angle. Kurt, first game of the NWL season. How excited are you for this season and tonight's game?

Kurt Angle

Renee, this is the most excited I have been with wrestling in a very long time! I am very excited for the season coming up, the NWL will revolutionize and invigorate the wrestling business. As the Commissioner, I am supposed to be partial, but there is one guy I'm looking forward to watching tonight.

Renee Paquette

We just witnessed some great action out of Chris Hero and Hideki Suzuki, but I'm assuming you are referring to an old rival of yours, Joe Senoa.

Kurt Angle

True, it is no secret that I am a huge fan of Joe as a wrestler. We had our battles, but my respect for him as a competitor never left. Claudio Castagnoli is in for a tough match tonight.

Renee Paquette

Thank you for your time, Kurt. I think this interview will be a first of many in NWL. We will be right back with the second match of the evening between the Chicago Wolfpack and the New York Knights!

--------------------

QVOfbGh.pngnIn6JRd.pngEeUwtYL.png

"Swerve" Strickland vs. Davey Boy Smith Jr.

  • You could tell from the start, "Swerve" was on his game tonight. His speed was immediately overwhelming for Davey Boy Smith Jr.
  • Strickland was able to get the upper-hand on Davey Boy fairly early with some innovative offense. "Swerve" shocked Smith Jr. with a Swerve Stomp halfway through the match to pickup a fall. (1-1)
  • The remainder of the match was full of Davey Boy Smith Jr. attempting to use his power game to get a fall, but "Swerve" was able to avoid trouble for the rest of the match.

Match Result: "Swerve" Strickland def. Davey Boy Smith Jr. (1-0)

We are now backstage with Renee Paquette, and the manager of the Chicago Wolfpack, Kevin Nash. It is obvious that we are going to get some insight on how the game is going for the Wolfpack.

Renee Paquette

Kevin, we have a tied game going into the third match. Have you told Claudio anything to get him ready for a potential win?

Kevin Nash

There is a reason I picked Claudio with our first pick, he is like having another coach on this team. Same with Hero, these guys know everything you could tell them already. It isn't what I told Claudio to prepare him for this match, but what Claudio and I expect out of this match.

Renee Paquette

You seem really confident about how this important match will play out. I'm sure you are aware Joe Senoa is no easy task. How do you think Castagnoli will fare in this match against such an experienced competitor?

Kevin Nash

I have confidence in all of my guys and Claudio is no exception. There is no one in the NWL I believe has an experience advantage over our team or our captain. We have a good chance of walking out of enemy territory with a win, all Claudio has to do is what he does best, out-wrestle the competition.

Renee Paquette

Well there you have it, folks! Can Claudio get the win over Joe Senoa or are these New York fans going to go home happy? We'll find out after the break!

--------------------

jPJC78M.pngnIn6JRd.png1PYdove.png

Joe Senoa vs. Claudio Castagnoli

  • It was clear from the get-go that Joe was not wanting to wait until the end of the match to grab the lead. Senoa was on Castagnoli like flies on stink with a barrage of punches and kicks.
  • Joe Senoa's aggressiveness came back to bite him heading towards the end of the match, as Claudio Castagnoli hit a Ricola Bomb out of nowhere to get a fall. (2-1)
  • That fall didn't make Senoa cool-off any, as he was now looking to tie the game. Joe was able to lock in a Coquina Clutch, but it was too late. Time expires before Joe could solicit a submission.

Match Result: Claudio Castagnoli def. Joe Senoa (1-0)

Cody Rhodes vs. Adam Scherr

--------------------

M6f2AtV.pngnIn6JRd.pnga4kOD8t.png

Levi Cooper vs. Biff Busick

  • Levi Cooper dominated early and often, throwing Biff around the ring like he owned the place. You could tell Cooper has the experience of an amateur wrestler, implementing many different suplexes.
  • You'd think that Biff's time was up and he was going to catch a fall, but Levi wasn't able to capitalize on his offense. Levi's gas tank was emptying fast from his offense and was not quick to cover.
  • With Cooper winded, Biff finally found his own time to gain momentum. Busick went to work on Cooper's midsection, exacerbating Levi's condition. Busick landed a vicious knee to Cooper's head while Levi was catching his breath to get a pin before the buzzer. (1-0)

Backstage is Renee Paquette along with the Texas Sandstorm's Ethan Carter III. If you Googled "smug" there would be a full page of pictures of Ethan Carter III right now.

Renee Paquette

I am joined by Ethan Carter III of the Texas Sandstorm. EC3, how have...

Ethan Carter III

Let me take over, Renee. EC3 doesn't answer questions, EC3 is the answer. Who is the best wrestler in the National Wrestling League? EC3. Who is the future of professional wrestling? EC3! Who is going to wipe the floor with Timothy Thatcher tonight? EC3! Dallas, Texas won the lottery when they got EC3 and the fact that EC3 was passed over by five teams in the first round is a joke. Tonight, everyone out there and at home will witness what they are missing and that is...EC3!

Renee Paquette

Okay, well that was something. Next up, Ethan Carter III takes on Timothy Thatcher in the second match of the night here on Thursday Night Wrestling.

--------------------

o91kpB3.pngnIn6JRd.pngHyL5cZP.png

Ethan Carter III vs. Timothy Thatcher

  • EC3 came out with disrespect, patting Thatcher's head and pie-facing him. That was a mistake, Thatcher locked in the Fujiwara Armbar. EC3 didn't hesitate and give up a fall via submission. (2-0)
  • EC3 would get his wits together, finally giving his opponent the respect they deserve. The rest of the match consisted of EC3 doing everything to stay on his feet and working on Thatcher's arms.
  • With Thatcher's offense limited due to his arms, EC3 took advantage and hit a nasty One Percenter to get a fall. At the end of the match Thatcher almost locked in another Fujiwara Armbar, but EC3 escaped. Seeing only seconds were left in the match, EC3 got out of the ring and let time expire. (2-1)

Match Result: Ethan Carter III draws with Timothy Thatcher (1-1)

Renee Paquette is now joined by the captain of the Texas Sandstorm, Cody Rhodes. The man looks as focused as he ever has, you can tell he is on a mission.

Renee Paquette

Hello Cody, many wrestling fans were surprised by the news that you were coming to the NWL. What was it that made you make the decision to come to the National Wrestling League?

Cody Rhodes

It is simple, Renee, there is a chip on my shoulder. Being the son of the man I am, there are things expected of you. The places I was at before here held me back. I am ready to prove that not only am I a son of a legend, but I will be a legend in professional wrestling. Where else to prove that than in the NWL, where my skills can be on display.

Renee Paquette

Cody, to say that there have been some haters out there on your signing here would be an understatement. Do those things get to you and with all of that noise, are you focused on your match tonight against Adam Scherr?

Cody Rhodes

It is no secret, there has been a lot of hate thrown my way in recent years. It didn't bother me before and it is not bothering me now. I am going to prove all of those haters that I am not just a "sports-entertainer". And I am going to prove to Scherr that the bigger they are, the harder they fall!

Renee Paquette

Thank you for your time, Cody. Coming up, we have the third match of the night and it should be explosive, as Cody Rhodes takes on Adam Scherr.

--------------------

lrieDZj.pngnIn6JRd.pngmAPP7Hm.png

Cody Rhodes vs. Adam Scherr

  • The start of this match was the definition of a deadlock. Cody was savvy enough to avoid any big moves Scherr had planned. It was apparent that Rhodes had done his homework.
  • The two men would eventually start to get some shots in, with Scherr landing a big press slam and Cody planting Scherr with a DDT. This is where Cody would control the match.
  • It was only a matter of time until Rhodes would tie this game up, but that's when Cody became his own worst enemy. Rhodes started to bask in the moment as he set Scherr up for a Disaster Kick, but Scherr had too much time to get it together and move. Scherr then grabbed Rhodes and planted a Running Powerslam before time was up. (3-1)

Match Result: Adam Scherr def. Cody Rhodes (1-0)

Love this idea. Your detail is amazing. The way you write for people is spot on. I read them in their voices. :p Although, if I had to make a complaint, there is no current NJPW talent brought in. Their product as of late has been awesome, with nearly their whole roster putting in great matches. The characters are memorable. With Kevin Kelly (not a fan, but...) adding English commentary and filling out the storylines makes it so much easier to understand and watch. Maybe not what you are into, but perhaps working out a trade agreement and bringing 2 of their stars in for a show and doing an "exhibition" match before the main card to get the crowd ready. Also to showcase, and help promote, NJPW. NJPW is working very hard to push into new markets. Also a lot of their workers are MMA crossovers, so that fits into the "legitimate sport" ideal of your product.

Thank you for the kind praise. I struggled with the idea of using NJPW talent when putting this together. I settled on not bringing anyone in because if I wasn’t poaching WWE or AEW talent to start, I wasn’t going to take NJPW talent. I would love to have someone with their work rate (Shingo especially), but I thought it would be best for that to happen naturally in the game.

Máscara Dorada vs. Matt Clement

  • Clement's former employer didn't do him justice in showing off his skill set, as he went toe-to-toe with one of the better luchadors in the world in Dorada.
  • If you like to watch two guys turn in a showcase on arm drags and dropkicks, this is the match for you. Once one man would appear to get an advantage, the other would block or reverse.
  • Dorada and Clement would get desperate as they go on a prolonged series of pinning moves, but neither catching the other sleeping. The closest we got to a fall in this match is when Clement almost hit the Wheel Kick, but Dorada ducked it like he was in The Matrix.

Renee Paquette is once again joined by the NWL Commissioner, Kurt Angle backstage.

Renee Paquette

Kurt, we are nearly through the first week of the 2022 NWL Season, what are some of your early takeaways so far?

Kurt Angle

My first takeaway, great wrestling. There hasn't been one match that I would say is not up to standard I set for the National Wrestling League. Everyone is giving it their all and I expect things to get even better as some of these guys get used to the style needed to succeed in the NWL. It is obvious that there are a few guys that have picked it up quicker than others.

Renee Paquette

That brings me to my next question. Who have you been the most impressed by as we are a couple games in the books?

Kurt Angle

Scherr has my attention! The guy has the strength and he has a competitor's mentality. It was pretty obvious that he was more prepared for the NWL style than his opponent, Rhodes, this past Thursday. There is one guy tonight that I think could give Scherr a run for his money and that is Junior dos Santos. I am excited to see if his unique experience will help or hinder him.

Renee Paquette

We aren't going to have to wait much longer to find out. Samuray del Sol faces off with Junior dos Santos when we come back from the break!

--------------------

gI7c8fQ.pngnIn6JRd.pngidEqErx.png

Samuray del Sol vs. Junior dos Santos

  • You could tell that there was quite the wrestling experience mismatch at the beginning, with dos Santos not knowing how to get things started on a wrestler like Samuray del Sol.
  • Samuray did try his best to use his speed and high-flying to the best of his abilities, but had to be wary of dos Santos striking ability. It became del Sol's main task to get Junior's back.
  • Samuray del Sol makes a vital mistake at the end of the match, possibly due to mistaking dos Santos' positioning as tiredness. Samuray attempted a springboard moonsault, but he was caught with a knee strike that would sleep a bull. This got Junior dos Santos a pinfall with plenty of time to spare. (1-0)

Match Result: Junior dos Santos def. Samuray del Sol (1-0)

Johnny Gargano is now backstage with Renee Paquette. The captain of the Miami Bite looks like he is determined, but also ready to have fun.

Renee Paquette

Johnny, thank you for giving me some of your time before your match. Can you give us a little insight into your strategy for your match against John Hennigan?

Johnny Gargano

Renee, I wouldn't want to give too much away, but being a part of this team there shouldn't be many surprises. If I find a way to make Hennigan tap, I'm going to take it. Shamrock has given me some tips and I am fully confident that the GargaNo Escape is going to be the deadliest move in the National Wrestling League.

Renee Paquette

Speaking of, there are a lot of people who believe you might not be the right fit for a team that is managed by Ken Shamrock. What are your thoughts on that?

Johnny Gargano

I came to the NWL because I am tired of these assumptions about me. I have always been painted as the underdog, as the smaller guy. People know that I can tap anyone out or kick anyone's head off, but it's always about what I'm not. I want everyone's perception of me in the past to mean nothing. I want to do that by winning the NWL Championship for the Miami Bite and Ken Shamrock.

Renee Paquette

Once again, thank you for your time. Everyone, that was captain of the Miami Bite, Johnny Gargano, who will be taking on John Hennigan in the final match next!

--------------------

pDDpNKX.pngnIn6JRd.pngaUz0VmC.png

John Hennigan vs. Johnny Gargano

  • As soon as these two men tied up, you knew that this was going to be fast-paced and hard-hitting. Both are deadly with their feet and early on it was a big key to Hennigan getting an upper-hand.
  • After a ringing superkick from Hennigan, Gargano had trouble finding his feet for a good chunk of the match. Hennigan grounded Miami's captain with a nifty slingshot legdrop.
  • Gargano was able to fight back and shot a brainbuster on Hennigan. Gargano took some time to get himself situated and allowed Hennigan to meet him in the middle of the ring. This ultimately ended-up with Hennigan blasting Gargano with another superkick. Hennigan went to the top for the Starship Pain, but Gargano moved and slapped in the GargaNo Escape. Hennigan taps out and does not have nearly enough time to get back into the match. (2-0)
