Historian Posted November 20, 2023 Author Share Posted November 20, 2023 FREEDOM of the City Friday Week 3, March 2020 San Juan High School, San Juan, Puerto Rico 274 Fans in Attendance FREEDOM of the City starts with brand new Puerto Rican Champion Mutant walking out onto the stage with the Puerto Rican Championship (which recently received a redesign). He stood on the stage and looked out into the near-capacity crowd here in the gymnasium of the San Juan High School. He took out a microphone and let the crowd know that while he was not wrestling on tonight’s show because of a minor injury he sustained that doctor’s wouldn’t clear him from, he will be back next month and will defend the Puerto Rican Championship. He plans on being a fighting champion and being a champion that all of the fans can be proud of. [49] Opening Match Singles Match “The Jackhammer” Joffy Laine vs. “The Triple Threat” Davis Wayne Newton The opening match pit rising star Joffy Laine against seemingly always stuck in neutral, Davis Wayne Newton. Newton’s always been so close to breaking out of the pack, so close to becoming a major star, so close to a lot of things, but has never managed to fulfill the potential people have said he has. Joffy could be in a similar boat. He’s talked about on a lot of message boards and Reddit threads and Discord channels, but he has yet to really break out. This was a solid match with good action. Wayne got some heat on Laine early in the match but Laine made the big comeback and got another victory. He’s clearly being groomed for something. In a bout that had good wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Joffy Laine defeated Davis Wayne Newton in 11:12 by pinfall with a Death Spiral. [48] Tag Team Match The Gonzalez Family vs. The Harlem Knights The second match pit The Gonzalez Family against The Harlem Knights. This was a pretty straight forward tag team affair. The Gonzalez’s, particularly young Marco are presented as big deals – with Marco clearly being presented as the future of Puerto Rican wrestling whereas Curtis Shaw and Harlem Haynes are just two powerful heels on a roster where if you’re not with House of Handsome or maybe Giant Brody or Hell’s Bouncer you’re not going to be at the top of the card, even as a tag team. The Gonzalez Family got the victory when Carlos Gonzalez hit Harlem Haynes with his Flat-Out, his running knee to the face when an opponent is on their knees. In a decent match, The Gonzalez Family defeated The Harlem Knights in 10:09 when Carlos Gonzalez pinned Harlem Haynes with a Flat-Out. Marco Gonzalez was the weak link, struggling to keep up with everyone else's in-ring performance. [32] Trios Match Future Shot at COTT World Six Man Championship The Latino Kings vs. House of Handsome [Ferrera, Jones, Dreadnought] w/ Clare South The ongoing saga between The Latino Kings and House of Handsome continued here with a future shot at the World Six Man Championship, as sanctioned by the COTT, on the line. This was a competitive match up with Juggernaut Jones and Dreadnought using their power in limited bursts, to allow People’s Champion Xavi Ferrera to do the bulk of the wrestling against the well-oiled machine that is the Latino Kings. The Kings’ experience teaming together proved to be the difference maker in this when they were able to knock Juggernaut and Dreadnought off the apron. Hector and Rudy both dove onto the two large men while Jesus Chavez took the opportunity to hit Xavi Ferrera with the 187 Neckbreaker and get the win and future title shot for the Kings. In a decent match, The Latino Kings (Jesus Chavez, Hector Galindo and Rudy Velasquez) defeated House Handsome (Xavi Ferrera, Dreadnought and Juggernaut Jones) in 14:40 when Jesus Chavez pinned Xavi Ferrera with The 187 Neckbreaker. [38] Singles Match Ox Mastadon vs. Hell’s Bouncer It was time for the two big bulls to lock horns. Hell’s Bouncer has been heavily protected in FCW for the duration of his run here. At 6’11”, Hell’s Bouncer is one of the biggest men in wrestling and Ox Mastadon, at almost 400 pounds, is a monster of a man. The long time tag wrestler, Ox has made it clear since splitting from Kennedy that he wants to be Puerto Rican Champion. He wants to complete the Triple Crown. This match was incredibly physical. A big brawl that didn’t involve a lot of actual bumping, it shocked the crowd (who was into everything in this match) when Ox Masatdon hit his Ten Ton Splash and got the three count and the big, big victory. In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Ox Mastadon defeated Hell's Bouncer in 9:32 by pinfall with a Ten Ton Splash. [39] Semi Main Event Tag Team Match The Island Boys vs. Relentless © w/ Clare South The first of two tag team title matches tonight, this for the FCW Tag Titles, was an excellent contest. The Puerto Rican Boys are a fine tag team and Relentless as quickly become a very polished unit. It was back and forth with lots of high spots and allowed both teams to get some shine, but ultimately it was Relentless who came out on top with another successful title defense. In a bout that had great wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Relentless defeated The Puerto Rican Boys in 13:42 when Ricochet Ramone pinned Island Boy Apollo with a Ricochet Senton. Relentless make defence number two of the FCW Tag Team titles. [43] Kip Keenan came out to the ring and issued a challenge to Giant Brody, who he knows is in Japan tonight, for another match. [51] Main Event Tag Team Match The Wild Cats vs. Hostile Takeover © w/ Clare South The main event pit CZCW representatives, The Wild Cats, against Hostile Takeover. Hostile Takeover, Handsome Stranger and Frederique, are the reigning COTT United States Tag Team Champions and this is their first attempted defense of those titles in Puerto Rico. This was an excellent contest considering The Wild Cats were virtually unknown in Puerto Rico prior to this match up. Hostile Intent did an excellent job of making the two luchadores look like credible threats to them and let them get a lot of shine early on before cutting them off and slowing the match down to their pace. Stranger and Frederique have excellent chemistry with one another, the two veterans just understand each other and are fantastic heels. The crowd was firmly on The Wild Cats side and the Wild Cats impressed, especially Tigre Salvaje Jr. who hit a beautiful plancha onto both members of Hostile Intent that really fired up the crowd. Ultimately, Hostile Takeover got the win when Handsome Stranger hit his Vanity Bonfire. In a superb match, Hostile Takeover defeated The Wild Cats in 25:45 when Handsome Stranger pinned El Jaguar with a Vanity Bonfire. Hostile Takeover make defence number three of the COTT United States Tag Team titles. El Jaguar was the weak link, struggling to keep up with everyone else's in-ring performance. However, I think House Handsome doesn't stand a chance at being long-term challengers for Mutant, and Giant Brody seems like a perfect guy to really test Mutant. Kip is great but Kip can take a loss. Him losing right after proclaiming to be a fighting champion would be a big hit for him. Meanwhile Fredrique is already one of the US Tag Champs, so a singles loss is okay for him. Semi Main Event Singles Match Texas Death Match Kip Keenan vs. Giant Brody Always bet on the Giant! Singles Match Future Shot at the Puerto Rican Championship Ox Mastadon vs. Handsome Stranger w/ Clare South It's Puerto Rico, so Handsome will go over. Plus, Mutant beating his partner earlier in the night writes the story for it self. Singles Match FCW People's Championship "The Jackhammer" Joffy Laine vs. Xavi Ferrera (c) w/ Clare South This is 50/50 for me, could go either way.
