Norman Smiley: Big Wiggling into the History Books

Norman Smiley: Big Wiggling into the History Books Meet Norman Smiley. Norman is a young man looking to make his mark on the world. He strives to be recognized by every man, woman, and child on the face of the planet. He wants his name to be uttered among the greatest names of all time. When people hear the name Smiley, he wants them to think of greatness. Norman has the desire to be the greatest ever in his line of work. What is that line of work you ask? Professional Wrestling. Flash back to reality. Norman is a skinny eighteen year old man who just broke into the wrestling industry, and hasn't even begun working for a promotion in his homeland of England. He has been training very hard for about a year already, and decided it was about time for him to start to look for work and get his wrestling career underway. His plan has always been that he will try to make it on the British scene first, and after he made his name there he would go to either Mexico or Japan to try to hone his skills with the best in the world, before heading off to the land of opportunity, America. That is where he would make his fortune and become the immortal personality that he has always dreamed of becoming. Norman heard that All Star Wrestling was heading to town soon, and knew that this was his oppertunity. He went and watched one of their shows, then heard that the wrestlers were heading out to a bar after the show. Once there he met two ASW wrestlers who went by the names of Steven Regal and Dave Finlay. Finlay was already an established wrestler, while Regal had just recently broken into the scene. They wouldn't have to much to do with Norman all night because he was an outsider, so Norman was isolated all night, knocking a few beers down, and trying to pick up some local women with a little move he calls The Big Wiggle. Needless to say, the ladies were not too impressed, and either were Finlay and Regal who simply replied with a "That boy ain't right". After this night of isolation and public drunkeness, Norman decided that he had spent his last night alone, because he was set out to start his wrestling career and now he was going to make a name for himself, and was going to have to fight the ladies off with a stick. He was going to pave his path to greatness, he decided he was going to be Big Wiggling into the History Books.

Monday, May Week 1, 1983 Norman's long journey began Monday at the gym, working very hard on trying to become one of greatest wrestlers to ever come out of the UK. He worked very hard on his in-ring basics, which he vastly improved. He also improved his power considerably by hitting the weights very hard, but he could still be considered as a pencil necked geek. He then worked on improving him image, and was taught how to better carry himself inside and outside of the ring, and his looks and star quality improved because of it. He then decided to get down to the nitty-gritty of getting the wheels of his career rolling. He contacted the owners of All Star Wrestling and Joint Promotions, both out of the UK. They both told Smiley that they would get back to him with their answers. The next day both promotions called back. Joint Promotions told him flat out no, which he sort of expected. But he was really suprised with what ASW told him. They said they had an open position for him. That was a verbal contract as a peanut vendor. Norman respectfully turned down the offer, but it was not an easy choice because he loved peanuts. Norman was forced to regroup, and at this point in time was weighing his options on where to go. He could go learn under some great wrestlers in Japan. He could also go wrestle in Canada, or even Mexico. He did not yet want to enter the American market until he felt he was adequetly ready for it. So thus was the begining of Norman Smiley's illustrious career, one rejected contract and one offer to sell peanuts. It wasn't a good start, but it could have been much worse, as Norman stayed ever optimistic, knowing he would eventually get a shot somewhere, then he could Big Wiggle his way to the top.

Tuesday, May Week 1, 1983 Norman decided on Tuesday that it was time to start part two of the Norman Smiley job search. He was turned down by every promotion in the UK, so his plan was already shot. So Norman sat down with a Yoohoo and a phone, and decided to try to contact some different promotions around the world. It came down to Norman knowing a guy that knows a guy that is in the Canadian wrestling scene, then Norman decided that Canada is where he would get his big start. Plus, unlike the English promoters, the Canadian promoters are too busy playing hockey and putting maple syrup on stuff to notice that Norman didn't have any popularity at all. He got the numbers for Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling and All Star Wrestling and gave them a call. They both said they are currently hiring, and they both even bought plane tickets for Norman for him to fly out to Canada and show them what he has. Norman must have impressed them because they both offered him eight month, verbal contracts. He would be a heel in both promotions, playing a British man that comes in and bashes the local game, hockey. He was then given promotional booklets on each promotion to try to get a feel for the two new places:
Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling Promotion Type: Traditional Size: Small Location: The Maritimes Schedule Grand Prix Wrestling (Every Sunday) Grand Prix Wrestling Stadium Show (Every Monday) Staff Owner: Emile Dupre Head Booker: Pierre Martel Roster Bif Wellington Big Stephen Petitpas Bill McCaullah Bobby Bass Bobby Kay Buddy Lane Del Wilkes Emile Dupre Gair Maxwell Gerry Morrow Kerry Brown Lenny Montana Leo Burke Phil Lafon Pierre Lefebvre Pierre Martel Rene Demont Ron Ritchie Rude LeBelle Steve Casey Sunny War Cloud The Cuban Assassin The Great Malumba The Spoiler Tom Rocky Stone Willie Davis Champions Maritimes Champion: Leo Burke Maritimes Tag Team: Ron Ritchie and Del Wilkes Grand Prix Light Heavyweight: Vacant

All Star Wrestling Promotion Type: Sports Entertainment Size: Small Location: British Columbia Schedule All Star Wrestling (Every Saturday) All Star Wrestling on Tour (Every Monday) ASW Lightining Strikes (Friday, May Week 1) Staff Owner: Al Tomko Head Booker: Al Tomko Roster Buck Ramstead Buzz Tyler Chris Colt Dean Ho Ed Karl Gary Allen Goldie Rogers Honky Tonk Man Igor Volkoff Jeff Costa Master Sgt. Friday, May Week 1, 1983 Norman started settling in his new home in Canada, and started getting used to the locals, who treated him very well, even though they all thought he was a little off center. He got ready for his first big event of his wrestling career, which was a big All Star Wrestling event called ASW Lightning Strikes. Norman was hoping lightning would indeed strike in his first match and he would get the victory that would start the snowball that would be known as the career of the master of the Big Wiggle, Norman Smiley. Norman made his way to the arena where tonight's big event would happen, and found out he had a match tonight with a man name Wojo the B.C. Hulk. If being in a match with a man with that name wasn't bad enough, he found out that it was a hardcore match. Needless to say, Norman was less than thrilled. He did not get in the wrestling business to be smashed with all sorts of weapons, he got it for the sport of wrestling. So he sat in the back and got his plain blue tights and boots ready, while he drank some Yoohoo, as he couldn't bring himself to chug a bottle of maple syrup like his opponent for the night did. The boys then decide to go out for a night of public drunkeness and overall crazy Canadian behavior, but they do not invite Norman out. So Norman spends the night alone in a hotel drinking Yoohoo and putting together a Duke's of Hazzard General Lee model car. Saturday, May Week 1, 1983 Norman got rested nicely after his first match Friday night, and after putting together his model rather nicely, even though it was a level one snap together one, Norman did it perfectly. He made his way to the arena where All-Star Wrestling was having it's second event in two days. This time when he got to the arena he got better news than he got the night before. He would be participating in a match wasn't hardcore, it was a 2 on 1 handicap match. Norman would be teaming with the man that beat him last night, Wojo the B.C. Hulk, to take on Rick Davis. Norman got his blue ring attire on and drank his customary pre match Yoohoo as he watched Wojo drink his customary maple syrup, wondering how he does it, and thinking it either makes him tough as nails or is going to lead to one of the most massive heart attacks in recorded history. Norman arose Sunday morning, still buzzing from his first win the night before, and decided it was time to get ready for his big first night at Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling. He got to the arena and was informed that he would be competing in the opening match that just happened to be a six man tag match. Smiley would be teaming with The Spoiler and Kerry Brown to take on Bif Wellington, Sunny War Cloud, and Phil Lafon. Norman got ready backstage with his blue tights and went over the gameplan with Brown and The Spoiler, who was incredibly over at the location of the event. Norman spent the entire pre-match talk trying to get The Spoiler to remove his mask though, as he wore the thing all day. He even offered to give him his trademark Yoohoo and a perfect model of the General Lee from Dukes of Hazzard, but Spoiler refused and asked Norman if he lived under power lines as a kid. They then headed out for the match. Spoiler told him not to worry about it, he just better not ever let it happen again. The talk in the locker room after the show was that WWF, and promotion in the US, had gone to a national level, and had earned a new TV show on Monday nights called Heat of Battle, and looked to take over the US wrestling scene in the coming months and years. Norman limped back to his apartment after the Indian Deathlock from War Cloud, thinking that he lost his first match in All Star Wrestling too, but came back and won his second, so maybe AGPW will be the same. He then got some rest, after a very busy first week in pro wrestling. Norman's first week of wrestling had wrapped up, and he celebrated by finding a gym to train at to become even better at his craft. He eventually did find one, and worked very hard to improve his wrestling basics. After that he went and manned the phones and made calls to All Star Wrestling and Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling, since both promotions had shows that night, he had to decide which one he was going to wrestle at. ASW had nothing for him, while he was going to be in another six man tag at AGPW, so the choice was pretty simple. Norman made his way to the arena that AGPW's big Stadium Show was being held at, and was informed he would be teamed with The Cuban Assassin and Buddy Lane to take on The Great Malumba, Phil Lafon, and Bif Wellington. His team got together before the match and laid out thier gameplan, which was to let The Cuban Assassin stay in the ring as long as possible as he was the best wrestler, and second most over worker in the entire company. Norman then got his blue attire on and downed a Yoohoo, then headed to the ring for his second AGPW match. Norman had a fairly slow week, but there was a huge news event during the second week of May. With WWF recently becoming a national promotion, they started their bid to take over the wrestling world. And Wednesday rolled around, they fired the first big shot at the wrestling world, telling everybody that they were for real and wanted to take control the industry as they signed: Hulk Hogan, Junkyard Dog, Dusty Rhodes, Michael Hayes, and Bobby Heenan, all to written contracts.

Saturday finally rolled around, which was very good for Norman because he was getting bored out of his mind without a wrestling event all week. When he got to the All Star Wrestling arena the locker room was buzzing with WWF's big signings earlier in the week. Norman then found out that he was in yet another six man tag match. This time he was teaming with Tom Magee and Rick Davis to take on the formadable team of Buzz Tyler, Wojo the B.C. Hulk, and Randy Rich. Sunday, May Week 2, 1983 The next day Norman woke up, ready for his second big event in two days. He ate a giant stack of pancakes topped with the maple syrup that the Canadian's love so much. On the way to the arena he walked by a hockey rink, where he took the opportunity to make fun of the kids playing hockey, until they started chasing him down the street with their hockey sticks, which sent Norman running down the road screaming like a little girl. He then arrived at the arena and was told that he would be in a tag team match. Monday, May Week 3, 1983 Norman had a very busy Monday. He started off by hitting the gym and training very hard on his skills to make him a better wrestler in the long run, and enhance the chance that Normanmania will sweep the world. He worked on his Chain Wrestling and Brawling. He then called the two promotions that he works for since both have events tonight. All Star Wrestling told him that he had a hardcore match with Buck Ramstead, and Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling offered him a one on one match with Phil Lafon. Smiley decided that the match with Lafon was the best opportunity, and accepted that match. He then headed to the AGPW arena for the big Grand Prix Wrestling Stadium show for the night. This would be a rare singles match for Smiley, and he prepared for it very hard before drinking his Yoohoo and walking from behind the curtain. Saturday, May Week 3, 1983 Norman didn't do much for the middle of the third week of May. But Thursday, huge news came out of one of the two promotions that he works for, All Star Wrestling. They had made two signings and held a press conference for it. First they announced that they signed Floyd Creatchman. The few people that attended were not too happy that were in attendance that they took time out of their day to see the signing. Then they announced that they another signing. This man would be the new authority figure for All Star Wrestling. The signing was none other than MR. T! Mr. T came out and informed the crowd that he pitties the fool who doesn't respect the authority of Mr. T, and that he is going to lead ASW to be the number one promotion in not only Canada, but the entire world. After this huge news ASW held their next event on Saturday, and Norman made his way to the arena, where Mr. T shook hands with every member of the roster. Norman then was given huge news, tonight he would be recieving his first ever title match. He would be challenging Oly Olsen for the All Star Wrestling Television Title. He then got on his blue tights and drank his pre-match Yoohoo and headed out to the ring for his biggest match of his career to date. Sunday, May Week 3, 1983 Norman came off his big title win Sunday morning, and got ready for his next event, which was the next night. He made his way to the arena, showing off his ASW Television Title to everybody on the way, and making sure to flash it in front of the kids playing hockey, before they chased him off yet again. He then arrived at the Atlantic Grand Prix arena and found out that he is having a rematch of from last Monday against Phil Lafon. This time though, he was informed that it would be the main event of the show, Norman's first ever main event. Norman went over what happened in his loss to Lafon last week and decided to stay out of the way of the Sit-Out Powerbomb at all costs. He then got on his blue tights and drank his Yoohoo, then headed out to the ring, looking to reverse his fortunes against Lafon. Norman got up Monday morning with a choice on his hands. Both promotions he is in had events that night. He called both ASW and AGPW to find out what kinds of matches he was getting for the night. First he called Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling, and they told him that he would have a one on one match with Bif Wellington. After that he called All Star Wrestling. They told him he was scheduled to defend his All Star Wrestling Television Title against Randy Rich that night, and Norman was not about to pass up a title defense and a chance at a big payday, so he accepted the ASW booking. He then went to the arena, and talked to some of the guys in the locker room, even though he didn't have any real friends yet, he planned on tring to strike up a friendship with somebody in the near future. He then put on his blue tights, drank his Yoohoo, and grabbed his Television Title belt and headed out to the ring. Norman came into the last week of May with a new found stack of money from his title win and sucessful defense, and decided not to blow it on a year's worth of lime Jell-O, and he came to the conclusion he would use it to get even better in the ring. He went down to the gym and put alot of money down, and the trainer helped him get alot better in the area of Wrestling Basics. Before he knew it Saturday had rolled around and it was time for All Star Wrestling. He made his way to the arena, and was told he would be in a big 4 vs. 4 tag team match. He would team with Chris Colt, Jeff Costa, and Wojo the B.C. Hulk to take on Buck Ramstead, Oly Olsen, Rick Davis, and Randy Rich. He then put on his blue tights and drank his Yoohoo, and had a craving for some lime Jell-O, but then realized he was better in the ring because he didn't have any, and headed out to the ring. Norman got up early Sunday morning and watched some Three Stooges, trying to pick up on any new move he could add to arsenal. He was very proud of the roll he had been on of late, and got ready to head to the arena for his Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling show. When he got there he got some bad news, he would not be on the card tonight, so he decided to get a chili dog and a Yoohoo from the concession stand and watch the show. Norman got up Monday morning, still a little upset about not being booked the night before at the AGPW event. He knew on Monday's though he always had a choice between the two promotions he worked for because they both held events on Mondays. So he called into to the two promotions, first All Star Wrestling told him he would be defending the All Star Television Title in a rematch against Randy Rich. That sounded very appealing to him as that match made him $1000 last week. He called in Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling just in case and they offered him a hardcore match with Bobby Kay. Norman was not a big fan of hardcore matches, so he decided to defend his title at All Star Wrestling's event. He made his way down to the arena, tried talking to Mr. T before the event, but he was too busy, put on his blue tights and drank his Yoohoo, then made his way out to the ring with his TV Title in hand. Norman got ready for the tough week ahead of training. Early Tuesday he headed down to the gym to spend his hard earned money to get better in the ring. He sat and watched match tapes, and took some notes, trying to become better at Psychology, then headed into the ring with a sparring partner to work on his Brawling skills. Later in the week, Norman got news that a man he had wrestled numerous times in AGPW, Sunny War Cloud, had been released by the company to make room for their recent signing, The Missing Link. Norman then got ready for a big night in All Star Wrestling, where he was told he would be defending his All Star Wrestling Television Title in his toughest defense yet, against Rick Davis. He got on his blue tights, drank his Yoohoo, grabbed the title belt and made his way to the ring for the opening contest of the night. Norman got up Sunday, watched some cartoons and ate some lime Jell-O that he picked up the night before, and decided to go over the tape from the night before, trying to see where he went wrong, and wondering what came out in him the night before when he used a weapon to end the match. Norman had not been one for cheating before then, and he didn't know what made him do that, maybe he was so attached to his title that he refused to part with it. He then decided it was time to head off to the arena, because it was time for Grand Prix Wrestling. He found out he was going to be in a six man tag team match. He would be teaming with Bif Wellington and Phil Lafon to take on Del Wilkes, Buddy Lane, and Tom Rocky Stone. He put on his blue tights, drank his Yoohoo, then got together with his teamates as they went over plans to win the match, then headed out to the ring for the opening match. He just hoped that next time he was booked in AGPW that it would be in a bigger match, and he knew that it would come with time, as he was still a lower card wrestler there. He then got a good night sleep, knowing that he was going to wrestle the next night, because both promotions had a big show. Monday rolled around, and Norman was very fresh because he didn't even have to wrestle Sunday night, as he team took care of all the hard work for him. He knew he would have to get in the ring tonight though becuase both ASW and AGPW had big shows on the evening. He called both promotions, AGPW told him he would be going one on one with The Great Malumba, and ASW said he would be teaming with Jeff Costa to take on Buck Ramstead in a handicap match. That sounded very appealing to him so he headed down to the All Star Wrestling arena for the handicap match. He got there and put on his blue tights, drank a Yoohoo, and met with Costa for strategy. Norman spent all week conteplating his loss in the handicap match Monday night, not knowing how it happend, he just knew that he wouldn't let it happen again. So Norman watched some Three Stooges again to try to learn more moves, and thinks he has the eye poke to slap to the back of the head down. He then gets ready for his customary three day stretch of wrestling, which is kicked off by All Star Wrestling. He makes it to the arena, where they tell him that he will be defending his ASW Television Title in a Hardcore match against Goldie Rogers. He got on his blue tights, drank his Yoohoo, and headed out to the ring for the opening matchup.
