Along Came Jones: A Journey through the Territories

While my friends were dreaming of being Fran Tarkenton or Harmon Killebrew, I was dreaming of being Verne Gange or Larry “The Axe” Henning. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Vikings and Twins as much as any other southern Minnesota farm boy does. But along with going to Vikings and Twins games at Met Stadium, Dad would also take us to see the AWA TV shows at WTCN, and there was always something about the matches, the spectacle, that fascinated me. I knew from an early age that I wanted to be in that ring, with that spotlight on me, with a ring announcer one day proclaiming me “the NEW Heavyweight Champion of the World!”

You’ve actually picked a pretty good time to join me on this trek. The past two years have been a hard, hard grind, but I’ve gotten to the point where I’m making pretty good money. I’m not sleeping in my car (thank God!) and I’ve put enough money away and invested it in such a way so that I have a fallback position if I get injured. And as far as what I’ve learned, I think I’ve done pretty well. Eddie was great at teaching me the core skills, but in many ways you have to be out there working matches week in and week out in order to really begin to develop. I’m kind of a generalist when it comes to my skills – I’m not horrible at anything, but I’ll never be great at anything either. Even though I’m a big guy and mostly just slug it out, I can work a technical match and even fly a bit. For the past two years I have had three steady gigs -- let me take a moment to give you a rundown on each of them. First up is Central States: Central States Wrestling (Regional): Central States hired me fresh out of training (Eddie himself was trained by Bob Giegel in the 50’s) and over the past two years I’ve worked my way into a comfortable spot in the midcard. Overall record is 42-20. I held the Central States TV Title for most of last year, but that was mainly because there weren’t that many opportunities to defend it. I hotshotted it back and forth with my tag team partner Terry Taylor in June, and finally got the opportunity to drop it to a newly hired Bobby Eaton a few weeks ago, who then lost it to current champ Skip Young. Terry and I are on our third run as Tag Team champions; we’ve had a couple of good feuds; last fall with Ron Bass and Crusher Blackwell, and currently with Adrian Street and Len Denton. The CSTATE roster as of March 1985:

Mid-South Wrestling (Regional): Mid-South was another territory where Eddie's students could be found. Paid my dues here more than anywhere else, and still really in the lower half of the card. Overall record is 112-65. I was beat on a LOT by the likes of Lord Humongous and Crusher Darsow early on, and then would be squash material for the upper card like Ted Dibiase and Mr. Olympia. That being said, I got my first taste of championship gold here; in the second half of 1983 I traded the Louisiana State Championship between Lord Humongous and Crusher Darsow a whole bunch of times (15 to be exact!). It was actually here where I first met Terry Taylor and started tag teaming with him, but he was released a few months after I started. In November 1984 I won my first Mid South Television Title, and while I lost it briefly to Butch Reed last month, I got it back a couple of weeks later.

Championship Wrestling Association (Regional): Memphis is probably my favorite place to work right now; that probably has something to do with the fact that I’ve gotten the best push here, and it’s a potential avenue to be able to get noticed back home by the AWA because of the talent exchange between Verne and Jerry Jarrett. I’m firmly in the upper midcard and have had some solid title reigns here. Overall record is 89-50. Feuded with Rick Rude over the CWA Mid-America Title over the winter of 83-84, that was my first really good long title run, with 26 defenses between December and May. Terry and I held the AWA Southern Tag Team titles twice before Terry’s contract ran out and wasn’t renewed. I won the AWA Southern Heavyweight Title from Bill Dundee back in October and have held it since then. I’ve also been in the AWA International Heavyweight title picture, trading the strap back and forth with Ken Patera and Dutch Mantell, but never holding it very long – there was a brief period in October where I had three CWA belts at the same time! The CWA roster as of March 1985:

Over the past couple of years I've made a number of friends in the business, some closer than others. Sometimes it came about just through working together, others I sought out because of the networking opportunities presented. I'm not one to name drop, but these are the folks I consider myself closest to. Buzz Sawyer and I work together in Central States. We get along pretty well, and he's currently got a PPA deal with AWA as well, so I'm hoping he'll put in a good word for me. Jim Garvin and I have put a number of good matches togeter in Mid-South. We're pretty strong friends, and he's got his foot in the door in two of the bigger territories; World Class and Mid-Atlantic. Johnny Walker took a shine to me for whatever reason, and he's said if he has a chance to help get me into Jim Barnett's Georgia Championship Wrestling, he'd do it. Ricky Morton and I hit it off in Memphis not long after I got there. Ricky also works for the Crocketts in Mid-Atlantic, so I'm hoping having a friend or two there will help down the road. Steve is another friend from Memphis, and we've gotten to be pretty close. He works in AWA and I was able to point him to some cool places to go in the Twin Cities. Steve Borden was one of the first guys in Mid-South to give me the time of day, for which I'll always be thankful, as it was hard in the early goings. We're not as close as we used to be, but I still consider him a friend. She's pretty, but also spoken for. Still, we get along pretty well and she's also a valet for Chris Adams in World Class. A couple of weeks ago, Terry surprised a bunch of us in Kansas City when he announced he'd signed with Vince McMahon. Terry was an early mentor for me in Central States, and we became fast friends. I didn't think I'd have an ally in WWF, but it sure doesn't hurt. Terry Gordy and I hit it off almost immediately when he showed up in Mid-South. He's also in Georgia and Mid-Atlantic, which are places I'm interested in being as well. Last, but certainly not least, my best friend Terry Taylor. He and I first met in Mid-South, and when we formed our tag team of Excellence Inc. we found ourselves a natural pair, even as a study in opposites. We've been regular partners ever since, working in all the territories I frequent, and winning tag gold in Kansas City and Memphis. Sadly, he and I are only together in KC now, but he has been working down in Houston as well.

And so, fellow travelers, we come to the first opportunity for you to help guide my path. Today I received my contract renewal offers from Mid South, Central States and CWA. To be honest, while I'm not unhappy in any of these places, none of these territories are growing, in fact there are more people leaving than coming. I've been successful, but I'm starting to think that I'm over enough that I could make it on a bigger stage. So I must now consider if I should accept my renewals or let one or all of my contracts expire in order to see if I can get picked up by one of the larger outfits. Just to give you a feel, the different bookers I work with have this collective opinion of my popularity: Great Lakes: C- Mid Atlantic: C Mid South: B- Mid West: B New England: C North West: C- South East: A South West: D Tri State: C Puerto Rico: D At this point, there are five candidates for that “bigger stage” I'm looking for. World Wrestling Federation (National) – they have TV and PPV deals, they’re signing written contracts, and their plan to go national appears to be going according to schedule. Their main event scene is a who’s who of the business – Afa and Sika, Bob Backlund, Dick the Bruiser, Hulk Hogan, Michael PS Hayes (the current World Champ), Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat (who just signed a couple of weeks ago), Rocky Johnson, Superstar Billy Graham, Tony Atlas, and my ace in the hole, my good friend Terry Funk, who just won the Intercontinental Title and told me before leaving Central States that he would gladly be a reference for me. Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling (Cult) – smarting from the losses of Flair and Steamboat, but still the crown jewel of the NWA. They still have Harley Race, who just won the NWA World title a couple of weeks back, along with Adrian Adonis, Bob Orton Jr., Greg Valentine, Sugar Bear Harris in his Kamala gimmick, Roddy Piper, Terry Gordy, The Great Kabuki, Tommy Rich (the current US Champ), and Wahoo McDaniel. I actually have more friends here – Jim Garvin and Ricky Morton are here along with Terry Gordy that I’ve worked with and would get good words from.

Thanks guys, appreciate it. Just a couple of OOC comments: I've been playing this savegame off and on for the past few months. It's a Rookie to Legend game with Realistic stats, and I'm maxed out on my abilities. I'm not going to play this game too far ahead, as I really want to make this at least somewhat interactive. So I really am looking for input as to my current employment options. Right now my thoughts are to decline CSTATE and MSW, but renew with CWA, then apply to all the previously mentioned companies. If WWF takes me (which I'm not expecting), then I'd have to give notice at CWA naturally. Hopefully two of the four Cult size territiories will make offers if WWF doesn't extend an offer.

It really surprised me to pick up the cage escape over a relatively low impact move -- I'd wanted to go for a few more minutes to build up a bit more excitement, even if I got caught in the end. I fully intend to put someone over before I leave so I don't leave the belt vacant. I did give notice to MSW and CSTATE. Once those contracts expire I will contact the "Big 5" mentioned previously and see who's interested...

Since I'm leaving CSTATE, I actually wanted to drop the tag titles rather than vacate them. I just wanted to make sure I went out in grand style and got a good match rating out of it to minimize any overness hit. I know I don't HAVE to do it that way, but it seems the more accurate roleplay.

And yet another gimmick match that doesn't go over -- although one time I beat Ken Timbs in a first blood match in 2:20 with nothing more than eye rakes and headbutts, and never getting touched myself. If there was such a grade as F-minus, that match would have gotten it.
