Yeah, use The Idaho Punisher!!! I swear he's one of the coolest workers in all the C-Verse... darn that F+ SQ of his, making people not want to use the man with the best render in the game.
It's frustrating, certainly. I love the render - I have images of him freaking out the kids with that scar of his - and I want him to stay good enough that I can keep using him. (Just as all that ended Travis Century's run with our company was him asking more than Brent Hill makes, and just as I use Whistler as much as I can justify.) Hopefully I can find a way to keep using him. Currently he looks to be on his way out - but after the second show I ran I said the same thing about Man Mountain Cahill.

You know, a silent but deadly badass who takes his opponents apart with brutal precision, who ends up being sort of an unpredictable hired gun type. Typically also stick him with either a tag partner or manager who can control him and speak for him. With any luck, his microphone skills will develop and he can completely strike out as the badass loner he should be. But... that's just me. I actually succeeded in getting him over in USPW in 07, with him even developing into a really good wrestler. Of course some of that was the random luck of his potential... Sadly, I haven't used him much in 2008. Maybe time to resurrect APWF and bring him into it... because screw PSW. DaVE was far cooler.

The boss was in a real tense mood, and wrestling being what it is, wasn't long before we found out why. “The networks were on his back about the ratings. Far as I knew – well, we'd taken a dip, sure, but it wasn't as big as people make out. And then, just past the Challenge, Supreme TV gets axed; I guess they wanted to make sure the ad money off the build to it came to them, but I don't know. “Actually, that's not quite true. Supreme TV was still running – in the UK, to a live audience of pretty near no one. We went from a hundred times the audience Philly Pro had to a little under what they had. Any wonder the heart went outta the show? “There was still Rage, but we were hearing rumours about that. I know Mr Eisen did his best to cover for us – we did the straight-to-video promotion thing for a while, bought a load of adspace and just tried to sell the videos, but no one's heart was in that. “We knew people weren't buying it. “So Rage is about to go off the air. The Hollyweird program's only shown on the East Coast. I remember Black Hat and Faith laughing at it backstage, trying to keep us from getting bugged by it all – but if you wanted to see pro wrestling outside the East Coast, you had three options. “You had North of the Border on the Pop!, which wasn't a huge draw because the Pop! covered so few homes. You had Philly Pro on National Pride, and same again. “And if you lived in Cali or a bit outside Cali, you had Coastal Zone and the lucha guys. North of the Border's been a solid presence for years; at the time in Canada they were a hair away from going to the next level, to becoming a full-on national powerhouse, big enough to justify exclusive contracts, starting up a house show loop, all that good stuff... “I owe Dan Stone a lot. I was happy to see them doing well. But you measure the Pop!, and you measure National Pride... “To the average western American, all've a sudden Philly Pro are one of the two companies you can see, and they're on a channel you respect about as much as the one carrying Dan's boys. Doesn't say they're on the same level, but it says something you wanna take notice of, you get me? “Faith used to say that once Rage went, Philly would be hurting. Their show came on right after Rage went off air, and he was pretty sure they got most of their audience from people flipping over to keep on watching wrestling. “We all watched the ratings pretty hard after he suggested that one.” -- Tom Gilmore nods slowly. “I hated having to follow Rage,” he says. “SWF shows weren't at their best right then, but they were still pretty good at what they did. There were a bunch of characters that the nation had learned to care for, most of 'em played by talented guys who could actually go in the ring. “If you watch Sean McFly dismantle, say, Rory McCallum in their main event, and you've just watched two hours of wrestling and you're hyped 'cause 'Mis-Ter Wrest-Ling!' just did his thing, and the pyro goes off and The Trooper starts going while he celebrates with that massive opening riff - “If you watch all of that and then you change channel and you see me and Steve stood in front of a door somewhere talking about taking on the Gold Guarantees or whatever – well, unless you live in the Tri-State you've probably never heard of any of us. You're gonna care why?” He grins. “I was much happier trying to follow OLLIE,” he says. “Apart from anything else, it's only an hour. Doesn't burn the viewer out the same way Rage did. They had a fanbase that'd make you love watching 'em, and they were pretty damn good. But the only reason they had name value on us was time, and they didn't have much coverage on the country.”
Excellent work Phantom, finally had time to catch up and it is an awesome read :)
Glad you're enjoying the ride. Heck, Rich Money just signed off to TCW...
C and C+ shows tend to be the order of the day. No noteworthy losses yet - unlike HGC, who've lost Strong to retirement, Bubb to pushing him too damn hard, and Chord to pushing him too damn hard/SCCW - but their roster, while strong, is doing badly. Too many entirely-undercard matches. If this weren't a diary game with the concept it had I'd have been insanely tempted to jump ship. Sam Keith, Sean McFly, Enforcer Roberts, a chance to make Jim Force a bona fide legend, and Bubb waiting if I can hit National in the six months... (Actually... I kind of missed a trick there. I can see the AI putting its weight behind Cahill, Thatcher and Anger in PPPW if I left, and if they were focused on using them chiefly in-ring that wouldn't be great for the company. If I'd watched for a few months at a time I could probably have deduced storylines the way I've done for people I've brought in, and Philly Pro would be more likely to fall on-schedule. Ah, well... I like booking this merry band too much to drop it.)

As Bach recoils, Holmes switches gear, hitting a release German into the side of the nearby Coke machine – which shakes with the impact. Continuing, Holmes fires off with kicks into Bach's gut as he lies there, an expression of fury on his face. “None of you are going to take my spot,” he spits. “Not the kids, not the girls, none of you!” He suddenly finds himself a few steps backward as someone intercepts him. Squaring up, he pauses as he realises that he's facing off with Horatio Dangerous – and that Dangerous looks furious. For a moment, he almost goes for it anyhow – but JD Morgan and Wanda appear behind Dangerous, at which Holmes spits on Bach and makes himself scarce. Dangerous' shoulders slump as relief fills him – and then Morgan spins him around, shoving him up against the wall with an arm jammed under his throat. “You blew your last shot, sunbeam,” Morgan snarls. “Know what that means?” “JD-” Dangerous splutters - “I think I... I think I can make it up to you...” Wanda laughs. JD intensifies the pressure on the arm. “Yeah? An' how exactly are you gonna do that?” “Title match,” Dangerous manages, and JD releases his throat. “Interestin' picture, sunshine,” he says. “Needs the detail fillin' out. You fancy obliging me with that?” “I spoke to Barber last night,” Dangerous says. “Whoever wins tonight – it's gonna be a triple-threat Saturday, at Devil May Care. You, him, me. An' a submission match – no way they can make either've us tap in time to stop the other breaking it up. But us-” “Maybe we won't have to worry about it,” Morgan grins. “Well. Maybe I won't have to worry about it.” “Exactly,” Dangerous nods. “And then next month, you and me can arrange things. I'll take the Pride an' we'll have things tied up.” Morgan considers, then nods. “You might actually have a deal, sunbeam,” he nods. “Screw this up, though, and there's trouble.” He and Wanda exit quickly, leaving Dangerous rubbing his throat and staring after them, obviously shaken. vs. Philly's Own vs. Nathan Coleman & Bryan Holmes A shortish match – a hair under eight minutes – doesn't leave them time to really bring this contest up to standards. At the same time, partly due to the talent of Marlowe and Holmes – this match is better than most of last year's offerings, with a driven Holmes seeming dominant throughout. It's when he tags to Coleman that the pace really changes, however, and Whistler manages – in an unusual display of agility – to roll clear of a Pioneer Twist, land, shift feet, and launch a Rebel Yell to squeak the pinfall. Philly's Own defeated Nathan Coleman & Bryan Holmes Rating: D- Whistler rises to celebrate, turning to face Marlowe, and sees Dog Fyte yank Marlowe off the apron, with the Professor braining him with a cane shot immediately afterward. Whistler starts for them – and is cut off, as a result, when Troy Tornado launches himself off the second rope with a prototype of his later-famous Star Maker flying lariat. The beatdown continues a few minutes longer – the highlight of which is probably Dog Fyte powerbombing Marlowe from the apron onto the ringsteps – before Nero takes up the microphone. “I've no desire to hide the belts away,” he says. “I've always been fond of fishing, and when you've got a good lure, and the gullible little guppies start to bite, you can use it for ages.” Dog Fyte remains stony silent. Tornado, meanwhile, is softly singing “The victims come in two by two, by two, by two...” in the background. Nero smiles appreciatively at his protege. “So come one, come all, come two by two... but these two idiots worked hard to get to the front of the queue, and the rest of you'll just have to take a number. Whistler, Black Jack – the challenge is simple. Devil May Care. Bring your best. Troy doesn't like to break people who aren't feeling good.” For emphasis, he uses the microphone for one last shot to Whistler's head, putting him down fully, and the Disciples leave. w/ vs. Charlie Thatcher w/ Floyd Goldworthy vs. The Rev No lack of chemistry here, but a painful contest nonetheless – and not in the good way. While Thatcher's pacing gets better and better, the Rev obviously wasn't feeling it and the result is awful selling, bad pacing, and generally an unsuccessful outing. The running big boot takes way too long putting this one away for Thatcher. Charlie Thatcher defeated The Rev Rating: E+ The camera takes us back to the Crippler position, where both Brent Hill – the Tri-State belt around his waist – and the Human Arsenal – sporting the Maximum Championship – are warming up. The live crowd give these two major names in California a good-size pop to start with, and then the camera pulls out to reveal Rich Money and Floyd Goldworthy, watching them both carefully. “Big mistake,” Goldworthy tells the Arsenal, who shrugs. “Enjoy your belt while it lasts,” Money adds. “Because I'm going to make sure that belt is back with the Golden Age sooner than you think.” He taps his head. “You're in here, Arsenal,” he says. “I know your weak spot. “I didn't want to have to use it, but... both of you need to pay attention to what's happening to Eddie Chandler. Maybe we've got other problems right now – but your time's coming. Just as soon as we're done.” “I'll be waiting,” Hill says softly. “You and me still have our own score to settle. This one – with the Arsenal – it's just more pressing.” He grins. “Seems like my diary just gets fuller and fuller...” The Arsenal's music hits, and he vanishes through the curtain. Money and Hill size each other up for a moment, and Hill feints a jab – and Money steps back. Brent grins. “Tonight, I'm in the cage. It's still you who needs lockin' up.” PPPW Maximum Championship vs. Brent Hill © vs. Human Arsenal Shoot Fight It's no real surprise that this main event is the best-received in Philly Pro history. Only Rockwell is a bigger name than Human Arsenal in Coastal Zone territory – only Rockwell and Hill himself. And the Zone's been starved of Hill since he went North of the Border. They play the cage intelligently; the occasional lock-up slams into it, at one point Hill's forced to run up the ropes and kick off the cage to counter one of Arsenal's wide variety of sleepers, and Arsenal gets to backdrop Brent into it at one point. Other than that, it's there to confine the action and keep the Golden Age away – and they go to what they do best. Arsenal's awkward shift into the face ranks continues as he works a pure match here alongside Hill, both of them focusing almost entirely on their matwork and their counter-holds – and the fans love it. They love it while Fair carefully checks both men for weaponry. They love it when they touch fists before kicking off. They love it all the way to the fifteen-minute mark, moments before the close of the show – and the point where the match is declared a draw. “I don't have any option,” Barber says phlegmatically into the microphone. “And I don't want one, either. Saturday, at Devil May Care, that three man title fight just became a four man title fight!” Brent Hill drew with the Human Arsenal Rating: B- Despite the awful midcard, the main event and backstage shenanigans made this show work as a go-home contest, bringing Philly Pro more interest just before their second pay-per-view, as well as, for the first time, bringing in as many viewers on TV as their first PPV managed. Next on SWF 24/7: HGC enter the East Coast War. Show Rating: C-

Woo great show. Really looking forward to an awesome looking main event and well... That shirt sounds badass, mainly because I am a Coleman & Ferdinand fan. Speaking of which, where was Ferdinand tonight? Why put Holmes with Coleman over a regular tag tandem? But yes, great show! Sucks it might be my last PPPW show to read until September though!

Joel Bryant hasn't been seen since last PPV for exactly the same reason; he and Stuey are currently touring, and as such we'll see 'em only on pay-per-view for the next couple of months. As to why Bryan's getting the appearances... There's an idea at the back of my mind for some way down the pipe which might see him align with them on a closer-to-permanent basis. It might not come to pass, but if it does, I'll be happy to have given them an association ahead of time. Oh - and I hope you'll get to catch the PPV before you roll out, but it'll be waiting when you get back!

Ditto here. That'll be up to you though Phantom. Although, to be honest, catching up [or finishing, although I hope it's catching up] in September will be a good way to wind down from Army training and starting off with an awesome looking PPV won't be a bad thing. As for Holmes/Ferdinand/Stuart group, it does make sense. They're all... bland workers in the sense that they have no real gimmicks but defending their spots in the way Holmes is doing would be interesting to read. And this has been my top diary. Nothing against the others, as I love the other diaries I read [JC's MAW, FIN's CGC, Comrade's EWA and Self's FCK], but this one has some intrigue and is in an interesting period and this past month proved it that you should get DOTM.

Whoever chose the venue for this interview picked a basketball court in west Philadelphia, aiming to emphasis Laramee's 'street' credentials. It's kind of worked, but from time to time a little kid ducks into shot in the background and hits Jack Bruce's 'overwhelmed by the power of air guitar' signature pose before looking embarrassed and darting away. “I'd only been with DaVE a few months,” he begins. “Before that, I'd been jobbing my heart out for you-” “In NEW, yes,” Jerry Eisen agrees, clarifying. “Right, and spending half my time in Japan with the big beautiful women.” He laughs. “I never worked out if he knew what us gaijin were going to think of that name or not. But I was definitely paying my hardcore dues. We were in this weird position where I was about as recognisable to their fans as half the other gaijin on staff – people like the UCR guy, Louis something, UK Dragon who used to work for Rapid Pro, Nic Lopez and freakin' Nemesis – so I was getting, like, a win for every couple losses over these guys. Not Nemesis – I think he'd scored creative control – but Nic Lopez, sure, and Louis went down a couple times too. But mostly, I was losin' to learn. “The Philly Pro raids were the best thing that had happened to me in wrestling by that time. Mr V picked me out as one of the guys who was going to lead DaVE now that the Dog and Morgan and all the rest were gone, and that got the fans behind me in a big way. “Which got other companies looking. Strong got me on board about the end of July – when I handed in my notice with you guys, right? “So now I'm working Hollyweird, BBDub, and DaVE. And Hollyweird ain't behind me enough to feed me wins. Which just makes the DaVE fans like me more.” He nods. “By the time V got us on TV, I was well placed to kickstart. Sometimes it's not the biggest company you're with that's the asset, that's what Sam taught me. The big place tends to have guys in the way, you don't get many wins, you get punked out. “And if I'd had, I dunno, Coastal Zone or something as my backup, I'd have been screwed by that. But when V put us on TV, they saw Kurt Laramee, the punk-ass can't win a regular match to save his life, with the chain-wrapped fist, the Bloody-Handed God routine I was doing at the time-” -- Another quick montage follows, much of it in black and white, as Laramee's chained fist pounds opponent after opponent with repeated shots to the forehead, followed by the fist raised triumphantly above his head, blood gleaming on the chain, running slickly down his arm. -- “-so there's a reason, with the hardcore rules and all, that suddenly the punk's not a punk anymore. I din't have to rebuild cred before I joined the Fed, I had plenty from the get-go. Enough that occasionally I could win matches clean.” He winks. “And let's face it, that's how I got where I am.” -- “Yeah,” John Campbell, the man known as Nemesis nods, lounging poolside, his lack of a shirt clearly designed to show off his collection of scars, to remind viewers what made this man, if not famous, a legend. “Kurt got brought in off my recommendation. Sam's big names were starting to fade out – Rip's off. Bubb's throwing his toys out of the pram. Sam was retired, I think on doctor's orders – I was a big name, and he wanted me.” A half-grin, half-grimace follows. “Took him long enough. “I sat on the sidelines about a year, but... I think this was the beginning of what eventually turned HGC into TCW. They weren't trying to be SWF number 2 any more, and they were hunting around for what worked – at the time they pulled me in they were taking their cues from the East Coast War, going for shock value and anti-authority, acknowledging the SWF was on a pedestal above them and using that to thumb their nose at them. “It's funny... I mean, that didn't work, but what made TCW a powerhouse in the end... I was thinking about this the other day, and they could've taken their cue from car hire. “They've positioned themselves as where the wrestling happens. It's classic Number Two strategy.” “What do you mean?” Jerry Eisen asks, intrigued. Campbell's eye twinkles with the smile. “ 'We Try Harder',” he says, and bursts out laughing.
[JC's MAW, FIN's CGC, Comrade's EWA and Self's FCK]
That right there is good company. Second this month is, I think, a record outside of Rookie for me, and I consider that both a step forward and a massive honour. We'll have to see what the future holds... I'll try to have the PPV card up for predictions tonight. May or may not get the show to you in time, though...
