TNA's New Beginnings

Recommended Posts

<p><strong>Explosion</strong></p><p>

Tuesday, week 1, September 2004</p><p>

Glens Falls Civic Center, Glens Falls, NY.</p><p> </p><p>

AJ walks to the ring to a good reception. He talks about the Regal Rumble and how he plans to win the Rumble to propel himself straight back into the World Championship picture. He knows it will be tough, but AJ has proved before he is the best in TNA and he will prove that again in the future.</p><p>

Then some familar music hits, music not heard in TNA for a while and out walks... Jerry Lynn! He tells AJ not to count his chickens so quickly, as he is back in TNA and has a spot in the Rumble. But... why wait until then? Lynn challenges AJ to a match tonight on Explosion and AJ accepts. There's a main event nobody expected! <strong>B-</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Ring Wizards v Trouble Shooters</strong></p><p>

Anderson and Quackenbush keep up their impressive win loss record iin their early days as a tag team by making light work of Cross and Lopez, winning a mediocre match in 6:46 when Mike Quackenbush defeated Jeremy Lopez by pinfall with an As If By Magic. <strong>D-</strong></p><p>

Mike Quackenbush goes a bit over the top in the post match celebration, you could say he's gone quackers. <strong>C+</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Beer Money v Homicide & Suicide</strong></p><p>

An interesting pairing here in Homicide and Suicide... Homicide put in a good performance too but it wasn't enough to overcome the former Tag Team Champions as Beer Money prevail in 9:38 when Robert Roode defeated Suicide by pinfall with a DUI. <strong>D+</strong></p><p> </p><p>

Ken Shamrock storms down to the ring clearly in a bad ring. He is mad at Jarrett and Corino for costing him his Regal Rumble qualifying match against AJ Styles last week. Shamrock knows that "yellow bastard" Jarrett won't agree to the match, so instead he asks Corino if he is yellow. Is he man enough to face off against Shamrock? Corino comes out and tells Shamrock if there is one thing he is not, that is yellow. He will face him tonight... but in a non title match. <strong>C</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Abyss v Spanky</strong></p><p>

An awkward bout saw Spanky toil and try for all he is worth against the much larger and stronger Abyss. He refused to surrender, he refused to know he was beaten, but brute force won through on this occasion as Abyss eventually overpowered him in 10:57 by pinfall with The Black Hole. <strong>D+</strong></p><p> </p><p>

A music video is shown to promote Psicosis. <strong>C+</strong></p><p>

<strong>Regal Rumble Qualifier</strong></p><p><strong>

American Dragon v Psicosis</strong></p><p>

Wow, what a very, very good match, one of TNA's best ever between arguably two of the best cruiserweights in North America. Both men utilised their full array of moves despite the match not been particularly long. Both men had numerous near falls in a match that had the crowd on the edge of their seats. The two 'blockbuster' matches later on are going to really have to go some to match this. American Dragon prevails in 13:55 by submission with an Arms Across America and both men receive a very good reception from the fans afterwards. <strong>B</strong></p><p>

American Dragon is in the ring when a masked attacker speeds into the ring and leaves Dragon down and out. <strong>C+</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>NWA TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP</strong></p><p><strong>

'The Ring King' Jeff Jarrett (champion) v 'Alpha Male' Monty Brown</strong></p><p>

The champ had few problems in this match and looked as, if not more impressive than Abyss did in his match earlier in the night. He dispatched Monty Brown in 10:10 by pinfall with The Stroke. 'The Ring King' Jeff Jarrett makes defence number 6 of his NWA TNA World Heavyweight title. <strong>C-</strong></p><p> </p><p>

SoCal Val stands near the ramp and begins a striptease and Mystery comes out and begins to make out with her. <strong>E+</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Ken Shamrock v Steve Corino</strong></p><p>

Almost as good as the American Dragon v Psicosis match but surprisingly, there appeared to be a lack of psychology on display here which hindered the match a little. Shamrock was getting in the zone and hit his belly to belly suplex on Corino. When Shamrock tried to follow up though, Corino grabbed Aaron Hassan and used him as a shield. Hassan immediately disqualified Corino in 17:26. <strong>B-</strong></p><p> </p><p>

Jerry Lynn comes out for the main event, but is greeted by Jeff Jarrett. Jarrett asks Lynn if he wants in the JWO. Lynn says he is flattered by the offer and admires Jarrett's group, but he prefers to stay on his own... for now... <strong>B</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>AJ Styles v Jerry Lynn</strong></p><p>

This has probably been TNA's best night of wrestling since it's birth in April 2002, and has certainly featured three matches that could go on any best of TNA compilation. In this one, AJ and Jerry battled back and forth, through the crowd, on the ropes, in the air and on the mat with intensity, passion and excitement for over twenty minutes and the crowd were enthralled. AJ defeated Lynn in 20:53 by pinfall with a fast roll up in a match that could easily have gone either way. The crowd were chanting "TNA" repeatedly as Explosion went off the air. <strong>B</strong></p><p> </p><p>

Show is a success and has increased TNA's popularity</p><p>

Explosion

Tuesday, week 2, September 2004

Lyndonville State Fairgrounds, Vermont

Jeff Jarrett is in the ring and he calls out Ken Shamrock. He has had a request that Shamrock wants into the Regal Rumble, which he finds strange since Shamrock cannot get a World Championship match while he is the champion. Shamrock calls out Jarrett and asks Jarrett where is that a written agreement? Winning the Rumble gets him a championship match in writing. Jarrett tells Shamrock he knew he would say this, and before he says anything else, Steve Corino and Jerry Lynn hit the ring and attack Shamrock. The three beat on him before Sting runs down to make the save. Jarrett, Corino and Lynn bail, Sting gets a mic and tells them he wants them tonight with Shamrock in a two on three match. Jarrett has no hesitation in agreeing. C

Briscoe Brothers v Homicide & Suicide

The Briscoes seem to be consistant...ly average. They show promise, sure, but they don't seem to be able to deliver... yet? This match was fairly even, with Briscoes superior teamwork and experience together against their opponents' superior ring ability. The Briscoes succumbed though in 10:07 when Homicide defeated Jay Briscoe by pinfall by using underhanded tactics. D+

Regal Rumble Qualifier

Super Dragon v Trent Acid

Acid makes his debut, and this is a really good match. If Trent keeps this up he'll finding himself rising through TNA quite rapidly. He overcomes Dragon fairly easy, while Dragon gets in plenty of offence he doesn't get in a position to pick up the win, which Acid does and moves on to the Rumble in 8:41 by pinfall. C

Mike Quackenbush is backstage with Ken Anderson, where he is quackers with excitement about his upcoming opportunity at the Tag Team Championship. C

NWA TNA TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Caribbean Cool (champions) v Ring Wizards

Quackenbush carries his excitement and enthusiasm into the match where he puts in a good performance, unlike Colt Cabana who looks like he preferred to be at home. Despite this, the champions prove too strong for the up and coming challengers who suffer their first defeat as a team in TNA in 7:57 when Colt Cabana defeated Ken Anderson by pinfall with a Coolness Personified. Caribbean Cool make defence number 4 of their NWA TNA Tag Team titles. D-

Harley Race comes to the ring with Abyss. He talks up the power of Abyss, how this will win him the World Championship at Regal Rumble. He then challenges somebody in the crowd to take on Abyss for $10,000. He picks out one unlucky guy when he sees there are no volunteers, who promptly gets pummeled by the big man. C-

TNA X DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

Mystery (champion) v Super Crazy

Mystery steps up to the plate at last as champion, as he and Crazy put on a good show in a flowing match which either men had chances to win. Crazy is denied again in a title match as Mystery defends in 16:28 by pinfall with a Moonsault Press. Mystery makes defence number 6 of his TNA X Division title. C+

A music video is shown to promote Psicosis. C

AJ Styles v Doug Williams

Despite the match having zero flow to it, the fans were kept entertained in this one as AJ kept up his good run since he lost the World Championship, as he wins in 13:48 by pinfall with a Styles Clash. C+

AJ then gets the stick and tells everyone how he wants to keep this momentum up into the Regal Rumble prevail over his 29 rivals in what is literally the biggest match of the year. C

Abyss (with Harley Race) v American Dragon

Another good match, between Abyss who is in the World Championship picture and Dragon who is knocking on the door of it since returning to TNA. Dragon gets in plenty of offence here but size matters in this one. Dragon hits signature move after signature move on the big man, but can't put him away before Abyss comes back and keeps up his momentum in 11:33 by pinfall with The Black Hole. C+

American Dragon is in the ring recovering when a masked attacker again hits the ring and leaves Dragon down and out. C-

Sting & Ken Shamrock v 'The Ring King' Jeff Jarrett, Steve Corino & Jerry Lynn

Shamrock has revenge on their minds while Sting has still yet to face Jarrett alone in the ring. Their combined motivations is strong and helps them immensely, but eventually the number advantage and the shortcut that the opposing trio has sees them come out on top of a very good match when in 20:45 when Jerry Lynn defeated Sting by pinfall while using the ropes for leverage. great card! everyone seemed to step up their game a little bit and put on solid matches (except Briscoes and tag champs). Mystery seems to be getting more comfortable as champion turning in a match as good as AJ.

losing Psicosis on the heels of Mysterio. All your Lucha stars seem to be heading back south of the border. Will Super Crazy be far behind (otherwise, he's gonna have to find new friends to hang out with).

hopefully some of your core group will remain loyal. You have a good group of newcomers of late.

I'm sure you're still a long way to go before reaching the national status, but at least you are on track (maybe a super PPV will get the ball rolling). Glad to see the finances are on solid ground these days.

Explosion

Tuesday, week 3, September 2004

Towson Center, Towson, MD.

The X Division Champion, Mystery is in the ring, demanding to know who it is that has been attacking him for the last two weeks. He tells all that he has all night, so he's happy to sit in here and wait as long as necessary, as his girls in the back know he can go all night. After a short while, Psicosis' music plays and he wants out, much to Mystery's displeasure. Psicosis tells Mystery in broken English that it wasn't him, but he knows who it is. Mystery demands to know whom from Mystery, when the masked man appears again and both he and Psicosis attack Mystery in the ring. This prompts AJ Styles to rush to the ring and clear the two off, and challenges Psicosis to a tag team match against he and Mystery tonight and for the masked man to reveal who he is. Psicosis nods. C

Beer Money (with Midajah) v Briscoe Brothers

Another average tag team match, and one where the Briscoes started off the better team, only for Beer Money to work their way into the match with their usual array of double team moves and playing the referee. However, the Briscoes pulled one out of the blue when in 8:13 when Mark Briscoe defeated 'Cowboy' James Storm by pinfall with a fast roll up. D

Regal Rumble Qualifier

Marc Mero v Spanky

Spanky made his much more experienced opponent look rather ordinary here, and won the match quickly and easily in 4:40 by pinfall with a Sliced Bread No. 2. D+

Don West is backstage in the staging area where the entrance numbers for the Regal Rumble are being drawn. Ken Shamrock is there to draw his number. He takes one, and looks pleased, but he doesn't let Don West take a peek. C+

Sting & Caribbean Cool v Frank & Spanish Announce Team

Sting was the difference here as he was head and shoulders above everybody else in the match. When he was in the ring, Frank and SAT had no answer to him, and this doesn't bode well at all for Frank on Sunday at the Regal Rumble. The Tag Team Champions didn't need to do an awful lot as Sting led the way for his team to win in 13:55 when Sting defeated Jose Maximo by submission with a Scorpion Death Lock. C-

A music video is shown to promote Steve Corino, highlighting his reign as TNA National Champion. C-

Jerry Lynn v Trent Acid

Even though there was a lack of psychology, this was a very good match. Lynn may be advancing in years and past his best, but boy can he still perform. Acid on the other had is young, hungry and after only two matches in TNA looks already like he will be a future star. Experience overcame youth on this day, but there is no doubt that Acid's day will come. Lynn wins in 12:37 by pinfall with a Cradle Piledriver. B-

Don West is backstage in the staging area where the entrance numbers are being drawn. American Dragon is there to draw his number. He takes one, and looks incredibly unhappy and he reveals he has drawn number 4. D-

Ken Shamrock v 'Preacher' Christopher Daniels

This was just as good as the Lynn v Acid match, and it looks like these two share great chemistry. It was also another case of the old hand overcoming the young, hungry wrestler, but if Daniels can carry on like this, like Acid his day will definately come. Shamrock has the victory in 14:57 by submission with an Ankle Lock. B-

Jerry Lynn and Don West are seen backstage in the staging area where the entrance numbers are being drawn, talking to themselves. Suddenly, the two workers shake hands. The camera zooms in, revealing they just switched battle royal numbers as Don West had Amazing Red's number 29 draw! C

'The Ring King' Jeff Jarrett, Steve Corino & Sheik Abdul Bashir v Abyss, Seaman Stains & American Dragon

The JWO show their are a good unit here, while their opponents show pretty much zero teamwork throughout the match. This is their downfall, particularly as Abyss has tunnel vision and is obsessed with getting his hands on the World Champion. Jarrett proves about as easy to catch as a snake and he ultimately gets his team the win, probably by avoiding Abyss all night and in 15:53 defeating American Dragon by pinfall with The Stroke. C

Jarrett is celebrating in the ring after the match, milking it on his own. Harley Race sees the opportunity and instructs Abyss to attack. He does so with venom, decimating Jarrett and hitting both the Shock Treatment and Black Hole Slam. Jarrett is left motionless in the ring as Race drapes his title over his lifeless body. C

AJ Styles & Mystery v Psicosis and masked man

Wow. This topped the two very good matches earlier, and AJ especially really shone brightly.

AJ and Mystery were in the ring when Psicosis came to the ring. Then some different music hit and the masked man made his entrance, and revealed himself to be... Juventud Guerrera. The four proceeded to put on an aerial wrestling clinic in TNA's best ever X Division based match (based since AJ has since gone to win the World Championship). The crowd couldn't get enough of this, but it had to end at some point and it did when AJ got the duke in 16:58 when AJ Styles defeated Psicosis by pinfall with a Styles Clash. After the match, the whole arena, including AJ and Mystery stood and applauded as Psicosis exited the arena and bid farewell to TNA. B
