sockpuppet Posted August 4, 2011 Share Posted August 4, 2011 If I'm being honest I've got to say that I definitely prefer the older lighting setup. I think it also makes the colors less flat, in addition to everything else you said. Still, I'm only one man and if everyone has no issues with the new lighting, then hey, who cares about me I like the older setup as well. It's largely been a matter of time for me. I did some testing though and if I reduce the render size to 205x173 I can drop the time down to about 45 to 70 min per render with the old lighting which is not terrible. For me, the third is lacking in contrast (although it probably looks the most "natural" and would work well in a scene, that's not always the aim for pics where you want the character to stand out), but I do like the first two. For the render above I prefer the first setup, but I expect that the second setup will work better in some instances when you don't want such pronounced shadows, such as when rendering eye-candy females, for example (case in point: the bags under Koiso's eyes show up more in the first than the second). Koiso is still somewhat of a work in progress, so I will probably have a new version up later. Easiest way to fix that would be to add a spot or directional light to either side, go to the intensity slider and click the options -> Parameter Settings. Where it says Min Limit set it to -100 so you can use a negative intensity. It'll take away light instead of adding it so you can control the amount of shadow you add. I'd try playing around with that, -10 - -15 should be enough and turning the shadow softness pretty high.
