ECW 1999: HARDCORE REVOLUTION

Heading into 1999, the main feud concerned Shane Douglas’ ECW Championship. At the November to Remember 98 pay-per-view, Taz had Douglas locked in the Tazmission before Sabu landed an Arabian Facebuster and got the victory over Douglas to earn a title shot at Guilty as Charged. Douglas then offered Taz money, Francine, a spot in the Triple Threat, or anything else he wanted if he would take Sabu out before Guilty as Charged. Taz attacked Sabu twice and in the process broke his neck as he put him through a table with a Tazplex. This left the Douglas vs. Sabu title match at Guilty as Charged up in the air.

The secondary feud that was raging as 1998 turned into 99 was between Tommy Dreamer and Justin Credible. The pair had began feuding as they headed into a tag team match at November to Remember; with Credible teaming with Jack Victory and Dreamer having a chose a partner. Many believed Dreamer’s long time mentor Terry Funk would be his partner, but Dreamer chose Jake Roberts. This led Funk to beat up Dreamer, and led to another clash between Dreamer and Credible in a Stairway to Hell Ladder match.

The ECW Television Champion Rob Van Dam, had resumed teaming with Sabu and the pair recaptured the ECW Tag Titles by defeating The Dudley Boyz at an FMW event in December 98. RVD continued to defend his TV Title; with a match set up to wrestle Masato Tanaka at Guilty as Charged. A Triple Threat match had also been set for Guilty as Charged, as Lance Storm, Jerry Lynn and Mikey Whipwreck – however with Whipwreck joining WCW, an open space was left to fill. Another feud that was brewing on the undercard of ECW events going into the new year was between two foreign imports, the Japanese Yoshihiro Tajiri and the Mexican Super Crazy – with Tajiri set to make his pay-per-view debut in January.

ECW HARDCORE TV PREVIEW

Week 1, January 1999

In the first Hardcore TV of 1999, we have three matches scheduled as we have just two weeks to go until Guilty as Charged on pay-per-view. Our main event will be for the ECW World Television Championship, as Rob Van Dam defends his title against a member of the Full Blooded Italians – Little Guido. The Champion looks to gain momentum ahead of his clash with Masato Tanaka at Guilty as Charged; while Guido looks to earn his first singles gold.

Our other two matches scheduled for this weekend will see Lance Storm take on Little Spike Dudley; with Yoshihiro Tajiri going one-on-one with House of Hardcore graduate Chris Chetti in our opener.

I'm always a fan of a good ECW project! :D They were, in my mind, the best wrestling company out there during their time. Sure, WCW and the WWF had all the money & mainstream glory; but, ECW had more passion.

Best of luck!

ECW HARDCORE TV RESULTS

Week 1, January 1999

Friday on the MSG Network / Saturday on the Sunshine Network

Taped at the Holland Civic Center [Holland, MI]

Dark Match: Super Nova def. James Storm in 7:29 via pinfall [26]

Joey Styles welcomes us to the first Hardcore TV of the New Year; and discusses the upcoming Guilty as Charged pay-per-view. Joey reminds us that Shane Douglas is without a challenger and speculates that we could find a resolution to this problem on tonight’s show. Styles recaps that Taz and Sabu match in which Sabu re-injured his neck and was sidelined from the pay-per-view. [32]

Shane Douglas interrupts Joey as he makes his way to the ring, accompanied by Francine. The Franchise orders Styles to get the hell out of his ring, because he wants to talk to Taz. Douglas claims that he is a real man, and as a real man he will stand by his word and ‘pay his debt’ to Taz. Douglas ran through the list of possible ‘prizes’ – a big chunk of cash, the services of Francine, a spot in the Triple Threat, or anything else he damn well pleases. [42]

Taz walks to the ring in his street gear, and runs through the list presented by The Franchise – he claims that he doesn’t need his money, because Taz is a rich man; he doesn’t want Francine because she is a dirty rat, if he wanted a rat that dirty he could just go out into the street; and he doesn’t want a place in the Triple Threat – because the Triple Threat is dead and will never be back. No, Taz wants something much closer to Shane’s heart – Taz wants the ECW Title, his price is a shot at the World Title at Guilty as Charged. [57]

Yoshihiro Tajiri -vs- Chris Chetti

Our opening contest saw Yoshihiro Tajiri wrestle only his second match on US soil as he took on the young Chris Chetti, a graduate of the House of Hardcore. After some sloppy exchanges, Tajiri made his experience and technical prowess count as he took things to the next level and pressured Chetti into making a mistake. As Chetti tried to use the ropes to springboard, Tajiri caught him a stiff kick to the back of his left leg and then planted him with a Brainbuster for the victory.

Yoshirio Tajiri def. Chris Chetti in 9:29 via pinfall [32]

We visit with Joey Styles who talks us through what we saw in our opening segment, and announces that Shane Douglas will defend his ECW World Heavyweight Championship against Taz at Guilty as Charged, only on pay-per-view – its official! [33]

Lance Storm makes his way to the ring, accompanied by Dawn Marie, and has a microphone in hand. Storm talks about how he has driven Mikey Whipwreck to siding with the devil and joining WCW; and how Jerry Lynn is nothing but a decrepit old man who can’t last three minutes without injuring himself. Lance Storm, however, is at the pinnacle of his career and is at his physical peak – he believes that when he leaves Guilty as Charged victorious he will be the new number one contender for the ECW Title. [33]

Lance Storm -vs- Little Spike Dudley

Little Spike Dudley hits the ring to a good pop from the fans; and Joey speculates whether Spike enters the triple threat match if he is victorious tonight. Storm dominates the early exchanges, before Spike battles back and pushes the Canadian close and nearly lands the Acid Drop – only for Storm to send his smaller opponent crashing into the top turnbuckle. Storm lands a German Suplex before rolling through and locking in the Canadian Maple Leaf for the submission.

Lance Storm def. Little Spike Dudley in 7:07 via submission [38]

We return to Joey Styles who tells us about the much anticipated Television Title Match in just two weeks as Rob Van Dam defends against Masato Tanaka; who has made a name for himself in the FMW promotion in Japan. [27]

The ECW World Television Champion Rob Van Dam hits the ring with Bill Alfonso and talks about how both ‘Mr Pay-Per-View’ and Fonzie respect and admire the talents of Masato Tanaka. RVD claims that it would be an honor to wrestle against such a well-rounded wrestler who he knows will be bringing his a-game come Guilty as Charged. RVD isn’t overlooking his challenger for tonight, and talks about being a fighting champion as he takes on Little Guido right now. [44]

ECW WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

Rob Van Dam © -vs- Little Guido

The first main event of 1999 saw Rob Van Dam and Little Guido of the Full Blooded Italians battle over the Television Title. Tracey Smothers and Tommy Rich of the FBI continuously threatened to interfere, with Bill Alfonso blowing his whistle every time they got on the apron to alert the Champion. Guido got a two count from an Italian Legsweep, which led Smothers to bring a chair into the ring – Fonzie got in his face and blew his whistle. Guido picked up the chair, but the distraction on the apron led to a Van Daminator from the Champion. RVD leaped to the top rope and hit a Five Star Frog Splash to successfully defend his title.

Rob Van Dam def. Little Guido in 10:49 via pinfall [51]

The show ends with a video set to “Dragula” by Rob Zombie covering the recent events between Shane Douglas and Taz as we are now on the road to Guilty as Charged on pay-per-view in just over a week’s time. [43]

[2/3] - Eisen-verse

There is the first show of the year, still ironing out my booking techniques for Hardcore TV.. im trying to find the balance between advancing feuds and having good in-ring action.. the hardcore content is low/non-existant this week but that will vary depending on which wrestlers are being showcased..

looking at the prediction results, its obvious the matches were pretty straight forward.. I know this isnt the best thing; but early on its probably something thats needed.. I thought that the matches were competitive but really, the results were never particularly in doubt..

I hope the numbers arent a problem; its probably just me but the numbers seem more suited to real world games and the letters more towards the C-Verse.. I think thats just me though...

and I hope everyone is happy with the style.. I dont think its too much to read through.. but I am a little unsure about the red.. I was trying to use it to break up the 'walloftext' effect..

any feedback on either style, or booking at this early stage is very welcomed.. and congrats to everyone who got 100% in the predictions.. thanks for reading..

ECW HARDCORE TV PREVIEW

Week 2, January 1999

With just a few days left before Guilty as Charged hits pay-per-view we have a series of matches to get you prepared for what is set to be a fantastic event. Our opening contest will see the ECW World Television Champion Rob Van Dam take on the Japanese wrestler Jado from FMW. Jado is expected to bring a similar style to the ring as Masato Tanaka, who will face the winner of this match at Guilty as Charged.

The other two matches scheduled for this weekend will see Justin Credible and Tommy Dreamer take on opponents selected by the other, ahead of their Stairway to Hell Ladder Match. Credible has promised to bring in a veteran tag team worker who has won belts at all levels and will no doubt join his entourage; whilst Dreamer has promised to bring in a man who cut his teeth in ECW and will be returning home at the weekend.

**Bonus points for correctly guessing the opponents.. JC's opponent is an 'ECW Original' who had his best run in the WWF.. Dreamer's opponent is a bit more obscure, but is a Tag wrestler who peaked in the late-80s/early-90s and wrestled in NWA and WWF..**

ECW HARDCORE TV RESULTS

Week 2, January 1999

Friday on the MSG Network / Saturday on the Sunshine Network

Taped at the Pizzitola Sports Center [Providence, RI]

Dark Match: Hardcore Chair Swingin’ Freaks def. The Tennessee Cowboys in 7:43 via pinfall [23]

Dark Match: New Jack def. Kid Kash in 6:15 via pinfall [19]

Joey Styles welcomes us to Hardcore TV and talks us through the escalating rivalry between Tommy Dreamer and Justin Credible and also the involvement of Terry Funk. Styles talks about tonight and how the pair has to choose each other’s opponents in their respective matches, with Styles speculating that perhaps Terry Funk would be facing Tommy Dreamer tonight. [32]

Justin Credible then makes his way to the ring as Joey leaves, with Justin and his entourage insulting both Tommy Dreamer and his lack talent in the ring. Credible talks about Dreamer’s opponent tonight, who is a decorated tag team wrestler who has held titles all over the place and will be making his return to ECW to prepare Dreamer for the stairway to hell. Tommy Dreamer comes to the ring and tells Credible that no matter who his opponent is tonight, Dreamer will be walking into Guilty as Charged with one task at hand – to take out Justin Credible and shut his mouth. [38]

ECW WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

Rob Van Dam © -vs- Jado

Our opening contest saw Rob Van Dam attempt to get used to the Japanese style as he faced FMW’s Jado. The challenger got in a lot of offense from the opening bell and looked to have the champion on the back foot and he planted RVD with a reverse Piledriver to garner a two count. Van Dam gradually fought his way back into the match, and after Jado miss-timed a lariat he caught a spinning wheel kick to the chin. RVD was quick to take advantage of this turning of the tide, and leapt to the top rope and landed a Five Star Frog Splash to retain his title.

Rob Van Dam def. Jado in 8:26 via pinfall [42]

The Dudley Boyz hit the ring and attack the celebrating Van Dam; with Big Dick dropping the Champion with a Chokeslam whilst his brothers set up a table. Fonzie is grabbed and held down by Sign Guy and Studley Dudley as Buh Buh Ray stalks RVD; lifting him up as he gets to his feet and the Dudleyz force the champion through the table with the Dudley Death Drop. [22] Buh Buh gets on the mic and tells the idiots to shut the **** up and listen to what he has to say; the Dudley Boyz want their Tag Team Titles back; and they will keep putting people through tables until they have what is rightfully theirs – D-Von tells us to testify as they stand over the fallen RVD. [16]

Tommy Dreamer -vs- Samu

Tommy Dreamer made his way to the ring, and was joined by his opponent – one-half of the Headshrinkers and the Samoan Gangster Party – Samu! The Samoan took Dreamer by surprise and brutally attacked him at the bell; however, Dreamer battled back and left Samu down after a DDT. With both men recovering, Justin Credible appeared at ringside with Jason Knight – with the referee concerning himself with Knight, Credible clocked Dreamer clean over the head with a Singapore cane. Samu recovered and went to the top rope, but missed with his attempted diving headbutt – Dreamer then planted him with a Piledriver and got the victory with a distraught Justin Credible looking on at ringside.

Tommy Dreamer def. Samu in 9:46 via pinfall [34]

Chris Candido enters the ring, and tells us that if anybody knows about triple threat matches it would be him. As a member of the Triple Threat, Candido wants himself inserted into the triple threat match with Lance Storm and Jerry Lynn – because it’s about time that he made it known that Candido was the best man in ECW. [26]

Justin Credible -vs- Stevie Richards

Our main event saw the returning Stevie Richards take on Justin Credible and his entourage of Jason Knight and Samu. The Samoan was attempting to get back into the favour of his ‘boss’ and got involved in the action early on. However, Richards was prepared and nullified the interference with a super kick. Credible used the distraction to control the match, and as he beat on Richards he screamed out to Tommy Dreamer that this would be his future. Richards battled back but was unable to leave a lasting mark on Credible, who eventually scored victory following That’s Incredible!

Justin Credible def. Stevie Richards in 11:24 via pinfall [42]

Shane Douglas and Francine make their way to the ring, and the ECW World Champion has some choice words for that stupid bastard Taz. Douglas warns Taz that he made the worst decision of his career by not taking the money and challenging for the Title at Guilty as Charged. Taz is quick to come out and tell Douglas to shut his mouth while he still can; before threatening to choke Douglas out and take his title tonight. Douglas squares up to Taz, and the pair begin throwing wild punches and have to separated by a bunch of jobbers and officials, as Joey Styles urges everyone to buy the pay-per-view this Sunday night. [42]

The show ends with a video set to “Living Dead Girl” by Rob Zombie which details on the recent events between the ECW Champion Shane Douglas and Taz ahead of the Guilty as Charged pay-per-view – we finish on both men going nose to nose from tonight’s show with the pay-per-view ordering information on screen as we fade out. [49]

Overall Show Rating: 37

Prediction Results

[3/3] - BigM

[2/3] - BHK1978

Both of your guesses at opponents were off, but your choices were probably better than mine.. I was happy to bring Steive Richards in - and honestly Samu was brought in to team with Fatu; but the latter couldnt agree terms.. so was used here instead.. and he disappointed if im honest.. I was happy that the RVD/Jado match didnt bomb.. and I think ill be bringing Jado (and probably Gedo) back in the near future..

Samu hasnt got a long deal so he'll probably stick around for a few months and give some much better workers a rub in popularity.. I will still try to bring in Fatu short term as well.. somehow hes listed as a Main Eventer.. yet the crowd hate the guy.. looking at his overness - it aint that great compared to other main eventers.. but still.. if we can pass that on to somebody else ill be happy...

The Tennessee Cowboys are a very young James Storm and Chris Harris.. I didnt want to team them.. but honestly, I doubt they will be making any impact on the main shows for a long time yet so im not worried..

with only two sets of predictions, am I posting the results to quickly or are the Hardcore TV's really not that interesting enough to predict? to be honest.. most of the matches are gonna be 'predictable' as the show will be used to build the pay-per-views and Arena shows.. ill be trying to expand which markets Hardcore TV will be available in.. and actively looking for a national deal (maybe even TNN)..

Guilty as Charged has be written.. as has the following Hardcore TV.. im in the process of writing House Party and booking the fourth Hardcore TV of the month.. January has been busy with 9 hours of action to write..

any thoughts or comments are always welcomed..

ECW GUILTY AS CHARGED 1999 PREVIEW

Week 2, January 1999

The first ECW pay-per-view of 1999 is here as Extreme Championship Wrestling presents “Guilty as Charged”. The event is headlined by the much anticipated clash between the reigning ECW Champion – ‘The Franchise’ Shane Douglas and his long-time rival Taz. The challenger has been laying waste to wrestler’s throughout ECW on his path to this title shot; even going as far as breaking Sabu’s neck in order to place himself in the main event at Guilty as Charged.

Justin Credible and Tommy Dreamer have been battling over recent months, and their feud culminates with a Stairway to Hell Ladder Match; where a Singapore cane will be hung above the ring – once the cane is captured it is free to be used by either man. We will also see Rob Van Dam defend his Television Title against a champion from Japan, in the form of Masato Tanaka. With great respect between the two men, will it be ‘Mr. Pay-Per-View’ or ‘Dangan’ who leaves Guilty as Charged as the World Television Champion.

On the undercard, we will see a Three Way Dance, pitting loudmouth Canadian Lance Storm against former partner Chris Candido and veteran Jerry Lynn. We then have an International Showcase as we see Yoshihiro Tajiri making his US pay-per-view debut against the Mexican star Super Crazy. Our opening contest is a tag team affair as Little Guido and Tracey Smothers of the Full Blooded Italians take on Danny Doring and Amish Roadkill.

Exactly. I am just picking the ones that I'd like to win, just because that is more fun :p

ECW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

SHANE DOUGLAS © -vs- TAZ

- Personally, I am not a fan of Douglas at all, and I tend to make him lose the World title in every ECW game I've had. Taz on the other hand is pretty awesome with all his suplexes and stuff.

STAIRWAY TO HELL LADDER MATCH

JUSTIN CREDIBLE -vs- TOMMY DREAMER

It'd be certainly interesting to see if Credible would win this one; how Dreamer and himself would react. ****y promos, angry Dreamer wanting a rematch? Sounds good to me.

ECW WORLD TELEVISION CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

ROB VAN DAM © -vs- MASATO TANAKA

I like both to be honest, but I don't see a need for a title change, THOUGH, it would be interesting to see Tanaka's take with the Television title. Alfonso kicks in and interferes?

LANCE STORM -vs- JERRY LYNN -vs- CHRIS CANDIDO

I like everyone a bit, but I have had fun with Storm in my ECW games, usually holding a title or two. Lynn also has the possibility of winning this one, but both Storm or Lynn winning; I don't care, I like 'em both.

YOSHIHIRO TAJIRI -vs- SUPER CRAZY

Ah! ECW Classic pair; Tajiri & Crazy, and I am a big fan of both. The match is promising to be awesome, thats for sure. Tajiri is slightly more interesting with his ring style though, standing out, so I'll give him the vote.

THE FULL BLOODED ITALIANS -vs- DANNY DORING and AMISH ROADKILL

Other F.B.I members interfere and my slight favourite, Little Guido along with his partner, who makes the pin, win.
