4/4. Nice work Bolt. And no, the teams indicated as "Mystery" are not McPeterson and Faust. I don't think a time-travelling gimmick would fare well in TWL...

It would totally work in HIW though.

Thats not a bad idea at all...

Trailer Park Kid v. Cheatin' Mike Barstow

- How sweet it shall be when Mike cheats to win~! and gets one over on TPK & Stampy! I like TPK but he seems more uppercard gatekeeper than legitimate threat. Plus I really dig something as simple but 70s evil as the gimmick being... he cheats.

TWL Tag Team Title Match: Crimson Serpent Cult (Cobra/Viper) © v. Demons of Rage (Demon Anger/Demon Spite) w/Professor Nero

- After the Lords of War split, I think it's better to keep it on the Cult, but the Demons need to earn the respect of the Texans and the Cult.

'Old School' Edmond Jackson v. 'New School' Jason Jackson

- "Sure you taught me everything you know daddio, but I've learned a few new tricks coz I'm... NEW SCHOOL and you're not!"

Annual Year End Battle Royal: 'King of the Battle Royal' Giant Grimsley, 'The Mayne Event' Kenny Maynard, Luis Montero, Executioner I, Executioner II, Pain, Mystery Participant, Comrade Popinowski, Floyd 'F-Bomb' Bowman, Mean Mark Green, Eruption, Tsunami, TimberWolf, Sheik Mustafa, 'Handsome' Tommy Handell

- I never vote against ???, now watch it be the debut of... Executioner III! License to print Texas Dollars that is!

Falls Count Anywhere in the Arena: 'Gorgeous' George DeColt v. Professor Nero

- DeColt avenges his family honour and here's the thing about Nero, he reminds me a lot of Roddy Piper, he doesn't need to win a lot of matches to remain a viable, credible, vile threat. He does his heavy lifting in the promos and angles and then in final match can let the face go over.

TWL Title Match: Chief Two Eagles v. Johnny Lawless ©

- I would rarely pick back to back face victories here except, this is the year end so send the fans home happy. Nero vanquished and the return of Law. Chief Two Eagles finally captures the TWL Title and Texas celebrates a 'damn durty injun' (Lawless' words, not mine!)

Cheatin' Mike cheats to win, Stampy doesn't see it, and TPK may get upset. But no matter, Cheatin' cheats to win.

Trailer Park Kid v. Cheatin’ Mike Barstow – Special Guest Referee: The Lone Star Stampeder

Billy’s Take: It was a bit odd to watch this match from backstage, rather than reporting on it from an in-ring perspective. This match, like the last time these two men met, was very evenly contested. Neither wrestler was able to gain a noticeable advantage, though Barstow did use several dirty tricks while Stampy’s back was turned to gain momentum. He once again tried to choke out the Kid with a string from his ring trunks, but even Stampy saw that, and threatened him with a disqualification. Then there was a pinning sequence in which both men nearly gained a three count. In the end, the Trailer Park Kid went to the ring apron and came back in with a sunset flip. Barstow, cheating as always, grabbed the ropes and dropped to his knees for leverage. But Stampy saw Barstow clinging to the ropes and kicked his hands off, allowing the Trailer Park Kid to complete the sunset flip and pin Barstow’s shoulders to the mat for the surprising one, two, three!

Barstow was irate after the match, throwing a tantrum in the ring and pointing an accusing finger at the special referee, claiming that he’d cost him the match. I don’t think that we’ve seen the end of this!

TWL Tag Team Title Match: Crimson Serpent Cult (Cobra/Viper) © v. Demons of Rage (Demon Anger/Demon Spite) w/Professor Nero

Billy’s Take: The last time these two teams met, Professor Nero attacked the Cult with his trademark cane, earning a disqualification. This time, I warned Nero before the match that interference would not be tolerated. He completely ignored me. As you would expect from these four men, there were few ‘wrestling’ holds applied. Instead, the Cult and the Demons pounded one another with fists, kicks, and power moves. Surprisingly, the Demons of Rage had control in the early going, using their size advantage to ground Cobra. But a hot-tag to Viper swung momentum back to the champions. As the match settled into a stalemate, the crowd near the entrance ramp started to buzz.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/Croup.jpghttp://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/Vandemar.jpg

Two men never before seen in a TWL ring, later identified as the New Zealand Game Hunters – Croup and Vandemar, emerged, stalking to the ring. Professor Nero saw the two men and howled, sliding into the ring to escape the duo. This threw the match into utter chaos as the Cult immediately attacked Nero while the Demons tried to wrest them off. The Game Hunters then slid into the ring and circled the Demons while the Cult stood warily by. Without provocation, the Game Hunter known as Vandemar jumped cat-like at Demon Anger and soon all seven men were in the midst of a pier-six brawl. I had to call for the bell, throwing out the match, and did my best to separate the seven intertwined men.

Once again, Sheik Mustafa and Comrade Popinowski came to the ring, showered by boos (and, of course, an occasional cup of beer). And once again, Mustafa took the microphone. “End of year is time of gift-giving in America. So I make Happy Christmas for you by giving you…Comrade Popinowski showing superiority of Mother Russia!” Popinowski took out a metal bar and positioned it behind his neck, as if prepared to bend it, while Mustafa dropped the microphone and began waving a now-unfurled Soviet flag.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/CalSanders_jtlant.jpg

Suddenly, Captain USA ran out from the back and grabbed the fallen microphone. “Nuh uh, not today Comrade. This is A..mer…i…ca, not Russia. Come on everyone, U…S…A… U…S…A…” the crowd responded, chanting the mantra back to the Captain. “And in America, we don’t wave a red and yella’ flag, we wave the red, white, and blue!” Captain pulled out a flag and began waving it feverishly. Popinowski turned his attention from the metal bar to the patriotically-clad interruption. He took a lumbering step toward Captain USA before the latter returned to the microphone. “Just a second there Ruskie Bill. I ain’t done yet. I didn’t come down here unprepared. I don’t trust either of you as far as I could throw you. I got backup. Patriotic backup.”

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/TheMaskedPatriot.jpg

On cue, another red, white, and blue clad man stormed down to the ring, the crowd abuzz with the appearance of the Masked Patriot! Mustafa hurriedly furled the Russian flag and forced Comrade to leave the ring, the foreigners glaring at the Americans standing in the ring, waving the stars and stripes as the crowd chanted “U…S…A…” C

‘Old School’ Edmond Jackson v. ‘New School’ Jason Jackson

Billy’s Take: I ordered Double Disaster to the back before this match began, wary of how Jason would use them to swing the match in his favor. Without his backup, Jason appeared to wilt – at least initially. Father and son put on a heck of a match here. It was obvious that Edmond played an important part in Jason’s training as the two had an innate understanding of one another. In the end, Jason’s arrogance cost him what had been a very even and cleanly-fought contest. Jason connected with a vicious-looking piledriver but, instead of going for the pinfall, he strutted and signaled for the California Dream. As he dropped to his knees to apply the hold, Edmond summoned enough energy to stop Jason’s hand and apply his own variation of the move, the Eagle Claw. Jason struggled, but could not escape Edmond’s iron grip and succumbed to the hold.

Edmond released the hold and held out a hand to his son. Jason, on shaky legs from the Eagle Claw, accepted and allowed Edmond to lock him in an embrace. Behind his back, Jason made a signal, calling for Double Disaster. Eruption and Tsunami barreled into the ring, attacking the elder Jackson. They left him lying in a bloody heap on the floor of the ring as Jason took a microphone. “Old man, the referee might have raised your hand tonight, but we all know who the real winner is. The Inglewood Icon, the Hollywood Heartthrob, the Sacramento Superstar – ME, ‘New School’ Jason Jackson!” B-

Annual Year End Battle Royal: 'King of the Battle Royal' Giant Grimsley, 'The Mayne Event' Kenny Maynard, Luis Montero, Executioner I, Executioner II, Pain, Mystery Participant, Comrade Popinowski, Floyd 'F-Bomb' Bowman, Mean Mark Green, Eruption, Tsunami, TimberWolf, Sheik Mustafa, 'Handsome' Tommy Handell

Billy’s Take: The fourteen known participants came out first, the faces (Grimsley, Maynard, Montero, the Executioners and Pain) standing apart from the heels (Double Disaster, Popinowski, Mustafa, TimberWolf, the Texas Outlaws, and Handell). Handell was the first elimination, courtesy of the friendly Giant, as he was thrown over the top rope with ease. TimberWolf was next, thanks to a well-placed Kenny Maynard lariat. Both Executioners followed as the Outlaws combined to toss out the yellow-masked duo. Then Maynard exited, courtesy of Bowman, who saluted his accomplishment with middle fingers aimed at the crowd. But his mini-celebration cost him when Pain erupted with a shoulderblock that sent out the veteran Outlaw. Finally the mystery participant came out, and it was the Masked Patriot!

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/TheMaskedPatriot.jpg

Mustafa and Popinowski erupted, both going after the masked man. But they were sidetracked by clubbing forearms from Grimsley, knocking both foreigners off their feet. In the confusion, Green pushed Pain over the top rope, but Pain held on, using his brute strength to pull himself back into the ring. Montero amazing took out both members of Double Disaster with a risky cross-body move, but his momentum carried him outside as well, amidst a standing ovation from the crowd. The Masked Patriot threw Sheik Mustafa from the ring, but was blindsided by Comrade Popinoswki, and exited shortly thereafter. That left just Grimsley, Pain, Popinowski, and Green as the final four combatants. Green immediately attacked Pain while the two giants went toe-to-toe. Pain managed to connect with a Pain Killer on Green and hoist his lifeless body over the ropes, leaving three behemoths in the ring. Back and forth the momentum went, Pain and Grimsley working well as a team, but ultimately unable to take out the powerful Communist. In fact, Popinowski impressively managed to eliminate Grimsley after hitting him so hard with a Polish Hammer that the big man fell backwards over the top rope. Pain and Popinowski circled one another before Pain went on the offensive. Unable to throw Popinowski over the top, he waited for him to attack with a Polish Hammer. Pain deftly sidestepped the move and gave Popinowski a helpful push, letting his momentum carry him out of the ring. Pain won the battle royal!

An irate Popinowski bellowed from the floor as Sheik Mustafa led him away, vowing revenge.

Pain won the battle royal, last eliminating Comrade Popinowski

Falls Count Anywhere in the Arena: ‘Gorgeous’ George DeColt v. Professor Nero

Billy’s Take: DeColt emerged first, obviously eager to get his hands on the nefarious Nero. When the Professor did emerge, it took a lot of self-control for DeColt to remain calm. Sensing his anticipation, Nero took an exceptionally long time to walk to the ring and then threw a chair inside. As I tossed the chair out, Nero jumped the surprised DeColt, taking the fight to the Canadian superstar. Nero controlled the early part of the match, but DeColt rebounded, powering out of a headlock to drop Nero in a ring-shaking atomic drop. He earned a two count for his efforts before Nero could escape to the outside. DeColt immediately followed, attempting a pinfall on the floor after a particularly vicious bodyslam. Nero then did his typical schtick where he feigned injury only to take advantage of a momentary lapse in concentration from DeColt. Back and forth the match went, with neither man gaining a discernable edge. DeColt set Nero up for the DeColt 45 on the rampway, but Nero slipped free and locked in his shaking sleeperhold. DeColt powered out. Then DeColt went for a suplex, but Nero countered by slithering away and locking in the sleeper once again, slamming DeColt's head into steel railing just for good measure. This time there was no escaping and DeColt passed out from the pain, giving Nero the victory.

Unsatisfied with simply beating DeColt, Professor Nero called out Demon Anger and Demon Spite. The Demons of Rage hit the rampway with a vengeance, pummeling the fallen Canadian. Although ‘The Mayne Event’ Kenny Maynard quickly interceded, the damage was done and DeColt lay bruised and beaten. C

TWL Title Match: Chief Two Eagles v. Johnny Lawless ©

Billy’s Take: As the challenger, Chief Two Eagles emerged first. He was preceded by several Indians dressed in ceremonial garb, dancing and chanting. Chief passed through the group, garbed resplendently from head to toe. He strode regally down to the ring, stopping occasionally to give eagle feathers to young kids sitting at ringside. When the blackhatted Johnny Lawless emerged, the fans booed mercilessly – one woman screaming at him and shaking her purse at the champ. When these two finally met, it was like two bulls hooking horns – neither man was willing to back down and they seemed very evenly matched. Two Eagles had the early edge, forcing Lawless to retreat to the floor. But when Johnny returned to the ring, he took over, cinching in a tight headlock. He came back to the move time and again. Each time, Chief Two Eagles managed to power out, despite Johnny’s strength and determination. Back and forth these men went. Ten minutes passed, then fifteen, then twenty. Finally, about twenty-two minutes in, Lawless made a mistake. He missed a wild Power Lariat attempt in which Chief ducked under. Chief then hit a Hail to the Chief running powerslam, but it only netted a two count. Undeterred, Chief went to the second rope, flying through the air with a tomahawk chop. But Lawless caught the hand in midair and reversed it amazingly into a wristlock. Again, the men went back and forth. Lawless again went for a Power Lariat, but Chief used Lawless’ momentum to push him into the ropes and roll him up from behind. I dropped to the mat and slapped my hand on the mat. Once, twice, thrice. We have a new champion!

As Johnny Lawless slunk to the back, the locker room emptied. Edmond Jackson reached Two Eagles first, slapping him heartily on the back. Luis Montero and the Masked Patriot followed suit – the Patriot, of course, occasionally teams with Two Eagles as Team America. The Crimson Serpent Cult did not appear – probably still fighting the Demons of Rage – while Professor Nero stuck his head out just briefly, eyeballing the champ, before returning backstage. Team Texas – Archie ‘The Governor Judge, Dave ‘Double-Wide’ Wylde, and the Trailer Park Kid – came next, followed by the Executioners. These men hoisted Chief Two Eagles on their shoulders, parading the new champion around the ring as the crowd roared its approval. B+

2/5. Just a different two. Nice work picking Edmond, but no love for the Trailer Park Kid (one of my favorites, by the way).

Trailer Park Kid v. Cheatin' Mike Barstow

TWL Tag Team Title Match: Crimson Serpent Cult (Cobra/Viper) © v. Demons of Rage (Demon Anger/Demon Spite) w/Professor Nero

'Old School' Edmond Jackson v. 'New School' Jason Jackson

Annual Year End Battle Royal: 'King of the Battle Royal' Giant Grimsley, 'The Mayne Event' Kenny Maynard, Luis Montero, Executioner I, Executioner II, Pain, Mystery Participant, Comrade Popinowski, Floyd 'F-Bomb' Bowman, Mean Mark Green, Eruption, Tsunami, TimberWolf, Sheik Mustafa, 'Handsome' Tommy Handell

Falls Count Anywhere in the Arena: 'Gorgeous' George DeColt v. Professor Nero

TWL Title Match: Chief Two Eagles v. Johnny Lawless ©

2/5. But you did correctly pick the battle royal winner!

1/5. Ouch. But as always, your logic is basically correct. I love the Nero = Roddy Piper comparison. It is certainly apt. Nero can be the company's top heel without even getting title shots. Though now that Chief Two Eagles has the top belt...

Trailer Park Kid v. Cheatin' Mike Barstow

TWL Tag Team Title Match: Crimson Serpent Cult (Cobra/Viper) © v. Demons of Rage (Demon Anger/Demon Spite) w/Professor Nero

'Old School' Edmond Jackson v. 'New School' Jason Jackson

Annual Year End Battle Royal: 'King of the Battle Royal' Giant Grimsley, 'The Mayne Event' Kenny Maynard, Luis Montero, Executioner I, Executioner II, Pain, Mystery Participant, Comrade Popinowski, Floyd 'F-Bomb' Bowman, Mean Mark Green, Eruption, Tsunami, TimberWolf, Sheik Mustafa, 'Handsome' Tommy Handell

Falls Count Anywhere in the Arena: 'Gorgeous' George DeColt v. Professor Nero

TWL Title Match: Chief Two Eagles v. Johnny Lawless ©

2/5. Just like Hash, you correctly picked Pain. Nice call!

Trailer Park Kid v. Cheatin' Mike Barstow

Cheatin' Mike cheats to win, Stampy doesn't see it, and TPK may get upset. But no matter, Cheatin' cheats to win.

TWL Tag Team Title Match: Crimson Serpent Cult (Cobra/Viper) © v. Demons of Rage (Demon Anger/Demon Spite) w/Professor Nero

The Demons will have their day, but for now the titles stay on the fireball throwing faces.

'Old School' Edmond Jackson v. 'New School' Jason Jackson

Edmond is great, but his son needs to go over here.

Annual Year End Battle Royal: 'King of the Battle Royal' Giant Grimsley, 'The Mayne Event' Kenny Maynard, Luis Montero, Executioner I, Executioner II, Pain, Mystery Participant, Comrade Popinowski, Floyd 'F-Bomb' Bowman, Mean Mark Green, Eruption, Tsunami, TimberWolf, Sheik Mustafa, 'Handsome' Tommy Handell

This is a great opportunity to help get Popinowski over.

Falls Count Anywhere in the Arena: 'Gorgeous' George DeColt v. Professor Nero

Face goes over in the blowoff match.

TWL Title Match: Chief Two Eagles v. Johnny Lawless ©

While I'd like to say the crowd goes home happy, I dont think this feud is ready to be over. Lawless retains via DQ.

1/5. As with the others, great arguments can be made for putting Jason Jackson or Cheatin' Mike over. But at my Wrestlemania (or at least my Clash of Champions) some faces need to prevail. And since George DeColt could be Canada-bound at anytime, the face wins needed to come from the undercard. Plus even with face wins, the feuds down there continue!

1978: A Year in Review

January 1978

Comings and Goings:

Signed – Jason Jackson

And perhaps most importantly, my wife and I had a son! Thom Austin Barrowman was born!

Wrestling World:

Sam Stravagelli won the APWF title, defeating the Brooklyn Punk. He would not hold it for long, falling to Brutus McBride in February.

In TWL:

Fresh off his TWL Title victory, Mark ‘The Lariat’ Krogan was targeted by a west coast newcomer, ‘New School’ Jason Jackson. Johnny Boy Tucker came to the aid of his mentor, Krogan, while Jackson soon revealed his backup – Double Disaster, Eruption and Tsunami. Also, a feud between Chief Two Eagles and Professor Nero began – Two Eagles seconded by the Nation (consisting of the Crimson Serpent Cult and The Prophet) and Nero by the Disciples of Evilness (TimberWolf and the Lords of War). And finally, the Texas Outlaws faced internal dissension as Blackheart Jones (aka Sam Strong) continually flashed the handsign of the Outlaws, much to the consternation of Floyd Bowman (who is trying to recruit Johnny Boy Tucker to the Outlaws), Mean Mark Green, and the Trailer Park Kid.

Elsewhere:

Former Vice-President Hubert Humphrey passed away. Also, in Super Bowl XII, the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Denver Broncos 27-10. The co-MVPs of the game were Harvey Martin and Randy White. Needless to say, TWL fans were ecstatic that their Cowboys won the big game!

February 1978

Comings and Goings

Lost – Samuel Stravagelli (aka Sam Strong)

In TWL:

The dissension between the Outlaws continued. Blackheart Jones wanted desperately to be in the Outlaws and challenged Mean Mark Green for HIS spot as the group’s enforcer. In a hotly-contested match, Green defeated Jones – after which Johnny Boy Tucker defied his mentor and joined with the Texas Outlaws, making it a four man group. Tucker and Bowman won the tag titles, only to lose them to the Border Runners. Mark Krogan remained the TWL champion, but watched helplessly as his relationship with Johnny Boy Tucker deteriorated. Also, Pat Deacon and the Trailer Park Kid formed a temporary alliance, further driving a wedge in the Outlaws and cementing Deacon as a foe of Bowman and Green. And of course the feud between Chief Two Eagles and Professor Nero raged on – they faced off without coming to blows throughout the month.

Elsewhere: Roman Polanski skipped bail and fled to France. Also blizzards ravaged the Midwest. Thank goodness we’re in Texas! And finally, serial killer Ted Bundy was captured by law enforcement.

March 1978

Comings and Goings

Signed – Larry Laffer

George DeColt

Lost – Don Juan Reyes

Wrestling World:

Mark Krogan also dropped his half of the AAFW tag team belts (co-held with Johnny Boy Tucker) to the team of Mighty Thor and Giant Grimsley.

In TWL:

The big story in Texas was the sudden retirement of the TWL Champion Mark ‘The Lariat’ Krogan. ‘New School’ Jason Jackson crowed about retiring a legend, though Krogan defeated him in his farewell match. The vacated belt meant that a tournament would take place. The final four of Pat Deacon, Professor Nero, the newly-arrived George DeColt and Johnny Boy Tucker emerged after winning qualifiers. Tucker turned on Krogan for choosing DeColt as his ‘chosen’ entrant in the tournament, becoming a heel with Floyd Bowman in the process. The battle between Chief Two Eagles and Professor Nero raged on.

April 1978

Comings and Goings

Signed – Rico Reyes

Octavian Reyes

Lost – Pat Deacon

The Prophet

Wrestling World:

Preston Holt’s stranglehold on the CPW Title ended, as Edmond Jackson defeated him for the belt. In August, Holt regained his title. Wild Man Sullivan finally dropped the CWB Title, losing to the Boston Bomber after an amazing 18-month run. Bomber held the title until September when Othello Dawson took the belt. Both Bomber and Sullivan left CWB - Sullivan is a free agent and Bomber went to SWF.

In TWL:

The finals of the TWL Title Tournament saw Johnny Lawless (having dropped the name Johnny Boy Tucker in favor of a more badass moniker) takes out George DeColt. The Trailer Park Kid remained in limbo – he sided with Pat Deacon more than his Outlaw running mates and continued a mini-feud with the team of Machete and Rampage. In a long-awaited four-on-four encounter, the Nation (Chief Two Eagles, the Crimson Serpent Cult, and the Prophet) defeated the Disciples of Evilness (Professor Nero, TimberWolf, and the Lords of War), though the personal battle between Nero and Chief was far from decided.

Elsewhere:

“Annie Hall” won Best Picture at the 50th Academy Awards. Woody Allen won Best Director, Richard Dreyfuss won best actor for “The Goodbye Girl,” Diane Keaton won Best Actress for “Annie Hall” and Star Wars got royally screwed over.

May 1978

Comings and Goings

Signed – Giant Grimsley

Rudolph Gray (Executioner I)

Day Glo Joe (Executioner II)

Wrestling World:

Dick the Devastator defeated Crippler Ray Kingman to win the AAFW Championship. Soon thereafter, Kingman departed AAFW and, after several months of free agency, debuted in SWF. The Brooklyn Punk regained the APWF title, defeating Brutus McBride.

In TWL:

The new Texas Outlaws formed after Mean Mark Green turned on his former partner, the Trailer Park Kid, to align with Floyd Bowman and Johnny Lawless. On the same night, Professor Nero maliciously attacked Chief Two Eagles, stealing his prized Indian headdress and shockingly piledriving him right through a ringside table. Also this month, the Lone Star Stampeder announced the creation of a new title, the TWL Six-Man Championship, to be decided between teams from the winners of two battle royals – won by Cobra and Jason Jackson. Also, the TWL Tag Team belts skipped from the Border Runners to Team Texas, marking Stampy’s first run with a championship belt.

June 1978

Wrestling World:

Brutus McBride and Mitch Haggans defeated Mighty Thor and Giant Grimsley for the AAFW Tag Team titles. Also, AAFW held their best match of the year, in which Dick the Devastator defeated Jimmy Power. Rumor has it that it was a “doughnut on a pole match.”

In TWL:

After a short absence, Chief Two Eagles returned to mete vengeance on Professor Nero, appearing at the end of a hotly-contested match between George DeColt and the nefarious professor. The Trailer Park Kid battled the Outlaws, though repeatedly fell short against his former stable-mates. Jason Jackson and Double Disaster, assuming the name West Coast Warriors, won the six-man title belts, defeating the Crimson Serpent Cult and Giant Grimsley and repeatedly defended the titles.

July 1978

Comings and Goings

Signed – Edmond Jackson

Drake McWade

Lee Wright

Lost – Octavian Reyes

Rico Reyes

Carlos Reyes

In TWL:

Johnny Lawless retained the TWL Title against ‘Gorgeous’ George DeColt, while fending off the challenges of Luis Reyes. The ongoing feud between Chief Two Eagles and Professor Nero continued, culminating in a match at Blazing Inferno. In this no-disqualification bout, Nero defeated Chief thanks to interference from the Lords of War. Chief vowed revenge. Meanwhile, Edmond Jackson made his debut in Texas, astounding his son Jason and vowing to teach the kid a lesson.

August 1978:

Comings and Goings:

Signed – Rick Horn

‘Double-Wide’ Dave Wylde

Lawrence Grove

Cheatin’ Mike Barstow

Lost – Rampage

Drake McWade

Wrestling World:

Identity Black, newly-arrived from CWB, defeated the Brooklyn Punk for the APWF title, which he held for a month before falling to Terry Lambert. Hagar Erikson’s nearly year-long run with the SWF World Title ended after he was defeated by Corporal Doom. Doom has held the belt since August, defending it three times, making him among the youngest champions in wrestling history. The US belt jumped around a little more as Marcus McKing dropped the title to Teddy Flame in June, who relinquished back to McKing in November.

In TWL:

This month features one of TWL’s signature events, Wanted: Dead or Alive. At this huge affair, Chief Two Eagles defeated Professor Nero in a tremendous match. In the semi-main event, Johnny Lawless defended his title against Luis Reyes, barely turning aside the challenge. Meanwhile, George DeColt and the Trailer Park Kid formed a short-lived alliance against the Texas Outlaws while the Lords of War claimed the tag belts from Team Texas.

September 1978

Comings and Goings

Lost – Heinz Getwellvet (Road Agent)

Major W.G. Reginald III

In TWL:

Two feuds began this month, both in the wake of Wanted: Dead or Alive. First, Chief Two Eagles set his sights on Johnny Lawless’ TWL title while Professor Nero decided to play mind games with George DeColt. The Lords of War retained their titles, strongly defeating Team Texas and the team of the Trailer Park Kid and DeColt. The Six-Man belts switched hands as Giant Grimsley, the Night Rider, and Edmond Jackson prevailed against the West Coast Warriors.

Elsewhere:

The Camp David Accords took place, bringing Begin and Sadat together in Maryland to make peace in the Middle East a reality.

October 1978

Comings and Goings:

Signed – Comrade Popinowski

Sheik Mustafa

Drake ‘The Snake’ Oberlin

‘Handsome’ Tommy Handell

Tito Bumfhole

Vandemar

Croup

Lost – Kurt Berkely

Mark ‘The Lariat’ Krogan

The Night Rider

Warlord Agony

Larry Laffer

Wrestling World:

Kenzo Isozaki took the CPW title from Preston Holt in a hotly-contested match (#3 in the company all-time).

In TWL:

With multiple challengers for Lawless’ title, the Lone Star Stampeder set up a mini-tournament between Chief Two Eagles, Luis Montero (formerly Luis Reyes), George DeColt and the Trailer Park Kid. Also, a feud developed between the Crimson Serpent Cult and the Lords of War, while Jason Jackson began claiming to be both a giant killer and legend killer (having defeated Mighty Thor and Giant Grimsley, as well as running Pat Deacon and Mark Krogan out of town). Chief Two Eagles defeated George DeColt to win his shot at Lawless’ title. A newcomer to TWL, Comrade Popinowski, debuted, showing off his strength while Sheik Mustafa, his mouthpiece, spouted anti-American sentiment.

Elsewhere:

The New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers to win the World Series. Bucky ***in’ Dent won the Series MVP.

November 1978

Comings and Goings

Signed – The Shaman

Demon Anger

Demon Spite

The Masked Patriot

Lost – Machete

Wrestling World:

Just weeks before gaining the TWL Title, Chief Two Eagles emerged victorious in an PWF title match against Terry Lambert.

In TWL:

Lawless continued his winning ways, embarrassing the Chief’s mentor – the Shaman – yet claiming to be underappreciated, reminding fans that he was THEIR champion. With Warlord Agony headed off to SWF (and the titles moving from the Lords of War to the Crimson Serpent Cult), Nero ‘fired’ his Lords of War and replaced them with a duo known as the Demons of Rage. In the midst of this transformation, the other Warlord – Pain – turned face to fight against Nero and his new Disciples. The feud between Nero and DeColt reached a fever pitch as little Alex DeColt got involved, shaving his head and wearing glasses to look just like Nero. And finally, Cheatin’ Mike Barstow debuted, winning match after match – sometimes in underhanded fashion.

Elsewhere:

Jim Jones led the Peoples Temple cult in a mass murder-suicide killing 918 at Jonestown, Guyana.

December 1978

Comings and Goings

Lost – Red Falcon

Wrestling World:

Rod Beams and Rocco the Plumber surprisingly won the AAWF Tag Team belts after an eight month reign by McBride and Haggans.

In TWL:

With TWL’s new television deal, TWL’s shows took a different shape. But the Year End Spectacular was, as always, quite a spectacle. In the main event, Chief Two Eagles defeated Johnny Lawless to become the new TWL champion. In the semi-main, Professor Nero shocked us all by dispatching George DeColt. Pain won the annual year end battle royal while the Masked Patriot arrived to battle the forces of Communism supported by Comrade Popinowski and Sheik Mustafa. And finally, father battled son as Edmond and Jason Jackson tangled, with the father teaching his son a lesson he’d never forget – followed up by Jason calling for a sneak attack on his dear old dad. Needless to say, we haven’t seen the last of those two squaring off!

With the Lone Star Stampeder finally calling it quits, he decided to open up a new dojo. Only time will tell how that influences the course of TWL!

In 1978 alone, the SWF signed the following wrestlers to written contracts: Rip Chord, Sam Strong, Pat Deacon, Crippler Ray Kingman, Mark ‘The Lariat’ Krogan, Warlord Agony, Brutus McBride, and the Boston Bomber.

From the Notebook of Referee Billy

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/TWL.jpg

Although it is still December, TWL is gearing up for a new wave of shows in the wake of TWL Year End Spectacular. The first television program, Texas Wrestling will take place with the following scheduled matches:

Giant Grimsley v. Comrade Popinowski

Two of the largest men in professional wrstling hook up, with the mountainous Grimsley squaring off against the medically-enhanced, erm, I mean naturally strong, Comrade Popinowski.

New Zealand Game Hunters (Croup/Vandemar) v. Demons of Rage (Demon Anger/Demon Spite) w/Professor Nero

Nero's minions face their toughest test yet, the animalistic New Zealand Game Hunters. Can Nero's demons of the depths take out the Kiwi big game hunters?

The Masked Patriot v. Sheik Mustafa

The Sheik is a tough guy, but the Patriot will have the crowd on his side. Can the forces of America beat back the foreign attack?

'Gorgeous' George DeColt v. 'New School' Jason Jackson

Jackson has his sights set squarely on another wrestling legend. But both of these men are coming off of losses. Which one will right the ship?

Quick Picks:

Giant Grimsley v. Comrade Popinowski

New Zealand Game Hunters (Croup/Vandemar) v. Demons of Rage (Demon Anger/Demon Spite) w/Professor Nero

The Masked Patriot v. Sheik Mustafa

'Gorgeous' George DeColt v. 'New School' Jason Jackson

Television show, new dojo... are you sure you want to start spending all this much?

Quick Picks:

Giant Grimsley v. Comrade Popinowski

New Zealand Game Hunters (Croup/Vandemar) v. Demons of Rage (Demon Anger/Demon Spite) w/Professor Nero

The Masked Patriot v. Sheik Mustafa

'Gorgeous' George DeColt v. 'New School' Jason Jackson

Loved the year-end review

Giant Grimsley v. Comrade Popinowski

Poor Grim. Hes the least imposing Giant ever

New Zealand Game Hunters (Croup/Vandemar) v. Demons of Rage (Demon Anger/Demon Spite) w/Professor Nero

Hot new team prevents young guns getting too big for their boots

The Masked Patriot v. Sheik Mustafa

double DQ with lots of shenanigans I think. Why waste Patriot/Sheik here otherwise?

'Gorgeous' George DeColt v. 'New School' Jason Jackson

I think New School is heading for pastures new. Or you're jobbing him donw

Giant Grimsley v. Comrade Popinowski

- Grimsley seems to just stand there, he has no story right now. Comrade has his anti-American schtick to run with. Makes sense to make the Commie Threat look dangerous by toppling the giant.

New Zealand Game Hunters (Croup/Vandemar) v. Demons of Rage (Demon Anger/Demon Spite) w/Professor Nero

- Double DQ/Count-out/Brawl out the ring and arena and into the streets of Dallas (or wherever TWL is based.)

The Masked Patriot v. Sheik Mustafa

- Mustafa the mouthpiece gets some Red, White and Blue beating.

'Gorgeous' George DeColt v. 'New School' Jason Jackson

- New School bounces back, since as you've said, DeColt could be bound for Canada or SWF at any moment. Might as well make New School look lethal if DeColt leaves. Or just lets the heel steal an early edge in the feud.

Television show, new dojo... are you sure you want to start spending all this much?

While the TV show is my (probably ill-fated) idea, the dojo is all Stampy. It is not TWL funded, though the graduates will definitely get a long look to fill out the bottom of my roster.

Also, I plan to post a roster (as per your earlier request Hashasheen) with brief bios in the near future (probably after another show or two). If there is any other end of the year stuff anyone wants to have recapped - from TWL or other organizations, let me know!

I really enjoyed the Review post, the only other thing that might be good (and Tigerkinney does this as well as anyone) is to perhaps give a 'state of America' or 'North America.' And briefly show how the federations are doing. Who the top stars are. Are they growing or shrinking? Something like this.

I've been lurking on this for a while now but I just wanted to pop in and say I loved the Year End Review and what you've done with the characters is just awesome. This diary really feels like a Texas wrestling promotion!

Also, interesting that your character is Guide's dad... If I ever do go back to working on this data I think I'll add referee Billy Barrowman in there!

Couldn't have said it better myself! It'll be interesting to 'see' what Stampy produces - probably a bunch of Rick Horn/Archie Judge/Dave Wylde clones. Woo hoo!

I like this idea. We will have to see how much energy (and time) I have on Monday and Tuesday to work on this. Wonderful idea, regardless!

What a compliment - on so many levels. I'd love to see Referee Billy pop up in a future update and am glad that you can see the Texas roots. I've watched some early 80s WCCW lately so I'm sure we'll see some of that pop up in the coming months...

Texas Wrestling

Junkyard (Midwest)

December (Week Three) 1978

Attendance: 1,000

Rating: 0.15 on Channel 7 Regional

The program kicked off with its now-standard opening, a camera zoomed in on a young girl kneeling beside her bed, hands folded as if in prayer. “And God bless Mother, and God bless Father. But most of all, God bless Texas!” Then the screen cut to the Lone Star Stampeder and Lawrence Grove, seated behind a desk at ringside.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/TheLoneStarStampeder.jpghttp://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/MarvinEarnest.jpg

“What a night we have in store for you, wrestling fans,” The Lone Star Stampeder began in a slow drawl. “Year End Spectacular was a huge success. We’ll talk about some of the results later, but most importantly we have a new TWL champion!”

“That’s right Stampy,” Lawrence Grove continued, “Chief Two Eagles vanquished Johnny Lawless, but I’ll bet my new Cheap Trick album that we haven’t heard the last of the Texas Outlaws. Right now, let’s go to the ring for some exciting TWL action!”

Giant Grimsley v. Comrade Popinowski w/Sheik Mustafa

Billy’s Take: Anyone looking for a headlock or wristlock would have been sorely disappointed by this match. On the other hand, fans of two bulls repeatedly charging at one another would have found much to like here. The two giants battled back and forth with punches and kicks – slowly turning in favor of Giant Grimsley. Apparently unsatisfied with the direction of the match, Sheik Mustafa called to the back where a new face to TWL ran down to the ring.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/TheAryanBarbarian_alt-1.jpg

While my back was turned dealing with the newcomer, Sheik Mustafa slipped the Soviet flag into the ring. Popinowski clubbed Grimsley over the back with it, causing the giant to crumble. He quickly slid out the evidence before I turned back around. Popinowski then set up Grimsley for a Polish Hammer, connecting and pinning the huge man for a three count.

After the bell rang, Captain USA and the Masked Patriot ran down to the ring to save Grimsley from further attack. They ran off Sheik Mustafa, Comrade Popinowski and the now-identified Panzer.

Lawrence Grove conducted a backstage interview with ‘New School’ Jason Jackson flanked, as always, by the enormous Samoan duo of Double Disaster. “Mr. Jackson, you are scheduled to face ‘Gorgeous’ George DeColt tonight. How, exactly, do you plan to counter his explosive offense?” “Oh that’s pretty simple Larry,” Jackson sneered, “you see I have, like, lots of experience beating men who think that they’re big, bad, legends. Mark Krogan, gone. Might Thor, gone. Pat Deacon, gone. George Decolt? He’s a joke. Just like the state of Texas. I’ve been telling everyone for the last like year about how much better California and the west coast are than anywhere else – especially places like Canada and Texas. But no one will listen. Maybe once I beat DeColt, all of you dumb people will realize the truth of what I, the San Andreas Superstar, the Prince of Pasadena, have been saying all along.” Suddenly, from the wings, George DeColt emerged. Jackson held back Eruption and Tsunami and allowed Grove to turn his attention to the Canadian superstar. “Jason, someone needs to teach you a lesson. And I reckon it may as well be me, eh. I can’t sit here and watch you flap your gums, badmouthing my home country and the fine state of Texas. Tell you what, kid. You think you’re tough? How ‘bout we make tonight a Loser Leaves Texas match? If you win, I’ll go home. But when I win, you have to leave the company, tail tucked between your legs all the way back to California!” Jackson immediately agreed, a smirk on his face, as he left Lawrence Grove speechless. New Zealand Game Hunters (Croup/Vandemar) v. Demons of Rage (Demon Anger/Demon Spite) w/Professor Nero

Billy’s Take: Just like the opening contest, there were very few technical holds used in this match. Instead, Nero’s minions became increasingly frustrated with their inability to dominate the Game Hunters – as they do most opponents. Croup and Vandemar gave as well as they took. Back and forth the men went until Nero jumped up on the ring apron. Vandemar, the unthinking brawler of the duo, chased Nero outside the ring as I began a count. Croup began yelling for his partner to return to the ring but, thanks to a timely trip from Nero’s cane, Vandemar was unable to reenter the ring in time. This forced me to call for the bell, awarding the match to the Demons of Rage via countout.

As the bell rang, Professor Nero snuck behind Croup, poised to hit him with his cane, when from the back sprinted Pain. Pain spun Nero around and planted him with a powerful clothesline before turning on the Demons of Rage. Anger and Spite merely hissed and pulled their mentor from the ring, backing down the aisle as Pain stood in the ring with the Game Hunters.

Once again, Lawrence Grove stood backstage, trying to get a word with Cheatin’ Mike Barstow. “Mr. Barstow, what can you tell me about your match at Year End Spectacular?” Barstow turned and glared at Grove. “I’ll tell you what happened,” Barstow began, “I was cheated. That no-good, two-bit horse rustler Lone Star Stampeder and that chain-smoking delinquent Trailer Park Kid were in cahoots. It was a conspiracy to end my winning streak, to keep me down. No one appreciates my talents, no one gives me the credit I deserve. Instead of sitting idly by tonight and watching these matches, I should be wrestling…probably for the title!” Suddenly Johnny Lawless, Floyd ‘F-Bomb’ Bowman, and Mean Mark Green emerged from the other side of Grove. “You deserve a title shot? Just hold on a sec there cowboy,” Lawless intoned. “You may’ve been cheated by the Stampeder, but I lost my damn title to a no good, dirty red-skinned injun. If anyone deserves to complain about being mistreated, it’s me! Tell you what Mike, when I get my title back, I’ll give you a shot at the belt.” Barstow nodded, apparently pacified by Lawless’ promise. “But I got bigger plans Chieffy, really big plans. I will take back my title.” “Bottom line,” Mean Mark drawled coolly into the microphone, “is that the Texas Outlaws are on top here in TWL and plan to be for a real long time. So Chief Two Eagles, don’t get too attached to that belt, ‘cuz the Outlaws are fixin’ to take it right back.” “****in’ right Mark. Let’s kick the ****in’ **** out of those mother****ers!” Bowman spat into the microphone…most of his sentence bleeped out, though the audience at home could certainly understand the meaning, if not the content, of his little speech. The Masked Patriot v. Sheik Mustafa

Billy’s Take: The Patriot and Sheik had the crowd eating out of their hands, booing the foreigner mercilessly and cheering the every move of the Masked Patriot. During the match, Comrade Popinowski lumbered to the ring. But he was intercepted by Captain USA, who hurled himself at the Soviet baddie. Security came out and pulled them apart, though they both stayed at ringside. Captain USA started a loud “U…S…A” chant while Popinowski unsuccessfully tried to quiet the crowd. In the end, the Masked Patriot was simply too much for the Sheik, ducking under a flailing clothesline and hitting the Patriot Slam on Mustafa, covering him before Popinowski could climb in the ring.

Chief Two Eagles strode regally to the ring, head held high and the TWL Title belt strapped around his waist. “Johnny Lawless, I’m disappointed in you. At Year End Spectacular, we had a clean match – no Texas Outlaws, no Crimson Serpent Cult. And I came out the better man, but I respected you. But now you complain that you were cheated? I can’t respect a man who complains and whines. So Lawless, you aren’t getting a title shot. Not yet. There is a long line of very deserving men who you’ve managed to sidestep. Next week, one of those deserving men will get his shot at this title,” Two Eagles pointed to the belt strapped around his waist. “And someday, maybe you’ll earn a rematch. But until then, Johnny Boy, you’re just another former champ.” C

Loser Leaves Texas: ‘Gorgeous’ George DeColt v. ‘New School’ Jason Jackson

Billy’s Take: The crowd was on edge in this one, neither willing to believe that DeColt would actually lose or that Jackson would quietly leave town if he lost. The match itself was an impressive back and forth, despite Jackson’s repeated forays to the floor to escape the powerful attack of Gorgeous George. In the end, DeColt’s attitude of always being on the offensive cost him as Jackson used his wits to slide under a DeColt 45 attempt and hit a low blow on the Canadian superstar (which I only saw on the television replay, not live in the ring). DeColt crumbled and Jackson locked in the California Dream as I counted to three, silencing an unbelieving crowd.

“Well fans, we may have seen the last of George DeColt, but we still have a lot of unanswered questions. Who will Chief Two Eagles face next week? How will Edmond Jackson respond to his son’s tainted victory? And what does Johnny Lawless have planned to regain the belt? You’ll have to tune in next week to find out. Until then, goodnight and God bless Texas!”
