Guest Booker: The Phoenix Also Rises: Phil Vibert and PWC

Recommended Posts

I'm certainly going to up the ante for Rex coming up soon, but I'm also trying to recreate the Goldberg streak to some extent, which included a dumpload of jobbers.
A dumpload of jobbers and repeat matches. I think Hugh Morrus must have jobbed to him like a dozen times.

I guess the experiment is finding the right balance between having the streak go on and ending it at the right time, to the right person, for the right reason.

You know, the opposite of how WCW handled it.

True. Personally, I would have given the end of the streak to Chris Benoit around 2000, with Goldberg passing out in the Crippler-Crossface.

And I think you'd be surprised how cost effective it is to have him squash chumps though, as far as his overness and momentum goes. :)
That's good!

“So it was Rick Law; he was the second of your big name signings….”

“Yeah, it was. The other guys got caught napping on him and I swooped in and signed him.”

“I hope you’ll forgive me for being so blunt……”

“…….”

“…..but is this, in any way, bullsh*t?”

“What do you mean?”

“What do I mean? Really?”

“What are you insinuating?”

“Eddie Peak, Phil. Eddie Peak.”

“I used the editor to get Eddie, but not Rick Law, I swear.”

“……”

“I’m serious.”

“Ok, I’ll believe you. But you have to do me a favor, ok? Let me know a few more of these things in advance, would you please?

“How about this for letting you in on something you didn’t know?

“……”

“As an act of good faith….”

“Of good faith? What are…..?”

“I’ve offered Bryan Vessey a contract.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

“……”

“……”

“And?”

“And…..you’ll find out what happens with everyone else.”

“……”

“Including me. I don’t know what’s happening yet, to be honest. That’s how inside you are right now. You’re in. Inside. That’s what you want, isn’t it?”

“……”

“I’d assume he’s just going to resign with TCW, or maybe he’ll go back to Japan or NOTBPW.”

“Probably. If TCW just lost Rick Law, and Eddie Peak a couple of moths beforehand, I can’t imagine they’d let Bryan Vessey walk, can you?”

“No, but I didn’t design this game or any of its mechanics, did I?”

“You could never do anything like that, Phil. I like you, don’t get me wrong, but you strike me as a…..”

“Hey be nice.”

“…..have you ever heard the phrase ‘snake oil salesman’…..?

“Awww c’mon…….don’t be like that.”

This is a damn hard card to predict without selecting lots of draws.

Just out of curiosity for the week 2 predictions why are most peoples scores out of 4, when the card was out of 5? Was it just a mistake when typing the scores up?

Excited to see who Member 4 is...could Vibert have been tricking us and Peak is on his side?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tyson Baine vs. Nicky Champion

-USPW World Title Match-

Draw - Im guessing Member 4 of team Vibert will interfere in this match, as you/vibert wouldnt want to take anything away from either wrestler.

Bruce the Giant/Enygma vs. Charlie Thatcher/Des Davids

DQ/Count out finish. Both teams need to be kept strong, but I feel Bruce & Enygma are a stronger duo.

J-Ro vs. Zoe Ammis vs. Emma Bitch vs. The Bomb vs. Dharma Gregg vs. Jana Marie Bowen vs. Alexis Lee

-USPW Women’s Division Lucky Seven Invitational-

Most talented of the bunch.

Darryl Devine vs. Aaron Andrews

-Rematch-

Draw...maybe setting up match 3 at the ppv?

Savage Fury vs. Ben Williams/Jeremy Jazz

Is this really a choice, cant you just give everyone the point?

-USPW World Title Match-

Bruce the Giant/Enygma vs. Charlie Thatcher/Des Davids giving Team Strong a win ahead of the main

J-Ro vs. Zoe Ammis vs. Emma Bitch vs. The Bomb vs. Dharma Gregg vs. Jana Marie Bowen vs. Alexis Lee

Tyson Baine vs. Nicky Champion

-USPW World Title Match-

When Champion wins the belt it will be on a more higher profile event than the latest weekly installment of American Wrestling.

Bruce the Giant/Enygma vs. Charlie Thatcher/Des Davids

More star power on the Team USPW side.

J-Ro vs. Zoe Ammis vs. Emma Bitch vs. The Bomb vs. Dharma Gregg vs. Jana Marie Bowen vs. Alexis Lee

-USPW Women’s Division Lucky Seven Invitational-

When presented with so many options, simply fall back on the most obvious one of the bunch.

Darryl Devine vs. Aaron Andrews DRAW

-Rematch-

I can definitely seeing this going to another inconclusive draw that will lead to a 'rubber' match at the next PPV.

Savage Fury vs. Ben Williams/Jeremy Jazz

Member 4 interferes, we have a draw, and Champion doesn't have to lose any momentum heading into the big Strong/Vibert Team War.

Bruce the Giant/Enygma vs. Charlie Thatcher/Des Davids

They just have more star power.

J-Ro vs. Zoe Ammis vs. Emma Bitch vs. The Bomb vs. Dharma Gregg vs. Jana Marie Bowen vs. Alexis Lee

-USPW Women’s Division Lucky Seven Invitational-

J-Ro is the most talented one. I was tempted to pick Dharma, even if she has the wrestling skills of a five year-old. But she's so AWESOME...

Darryl Devine vs. Aaron Andrews

Going against everyone else here.

There is no reason to think Baine drops this title now.

Bruce the Giant/Enygma vs. Charlie Thatcher/Des Davids

When the two biggest names in a tag match are on the same side, it's a pretty safe bet to pick that side.

J-Ro vs. Zoe Ammis vs. Emma Bitch vs. The Bomb vs. Dharma Gregg vs. Jana Marie Bowen vs. Alexis Lee

-USPW Women’s Division Lucky Seven Invitational-

Wishful thinking, I'm sure.

Darryl Devine vs. Aaron Andrews

Devine's got seniority.

Savage Fury vs. Ben Williams/Jeremy Jazz

Savage Fury? I'd take Mild Disappointment over these two chumps.

Last call for predictions, wrestling fans.

Just to clear up a question from a few posts ago about the standings. In the first week there was a draw/stoppage/no finish in a match and I felt bad about deducting a point because of the circumstances. So, I didn't count it unless someone made a point to say that it would be a schmozz ending.

Also, I'm getting quite a kick out of people's speculation about who Vibert's fourth man is. Surely you'll find out who it is on this week's American Wrestling, right? ;)

When the show goes live, Sam Strong and the rest of Team USPW is in the ring and the St. Petersburg crowd is going bananas, with pumping fists and signs as far as the camera can see.

SS: “You know something, brothers?

Another big cheer.

SS: “This Sunday night is the most important night of my whole career, dudes. I’ve headlined the Supreme Challenge…… I’m in the-by god-hall of fame…..and neither of those things can even compare to what could happen in four days.”

Everyone in the ring nods, it’s big for them too.

SS: “This company, USPW, is more than my life…..it’s my legacy.”

The fans applaud again; many of them in this region have been with USPW since day one.

SS: “I might’ve made a poor decision, making portions of the company’s ownership shares available to be purchased, in hopes that the extra funds could help me grow the company quicker. The plan was always to buy them back at a later date……”

He trails off, ashamed of himself. Alicia puts her hand on his shoulder.

SS: “But Phil Vibert coming in here with enough power to run the show? The idea of it is enough to send me to my grave, brothers.”

He motions to the men standing alongside him.

SS: “So these guys are going to stand up for what’s right in this business, they are going to get into the ring and defend my legacy; my legacy and the legacy of the USPW!”

Champion hugs Strong as Enygma and Bruce the Giant high five each other and play to the fans. Alicia and Rick Law reach out over the top rope and give a huge babyface thumbs up to the ringside camera as the voices of USPW, Shawn Doakes and Mickey Starr, tie up the segment, sending the show screaming into the open.

SD: “I don’t know who Phil Vibert has got coming to join his team, but I do know that Sam Strong has a very motivated group going to war for him.”

MS: “You’re right Doakes; it’s a matter of life and death for them because it’s all about the legacy of Sam Strong and what his place in the history of this business will really end up being.”

*******

Aaron Andrews vs. Darryl Devine

Result: As far as straight wrestling goes, this is probably one of the best matches in the history of USPW American Wrestling. Their first time limit draw left Darryl Devine incensed to the point that he left an open contract in the USPW office in case Andrews sought a rematch. Luckily, he did. But once again, the two men are so evenly matched that neither is even close to ending the contest when the fifteen minute TV time limit expires. Devine can’t believe it and freaks out, pounding the mat in frustration before rolling to the floor, angrily grabbing Seduction by the wrist, and stomping back up the aisle, never looking back.

SD: “I thought for sure that taking care of the Team Vibert vs. Team Strong decision would help him get his focus back, but he still had some trouble tonight.”

MS: “And maybe we’re just overlooking the obvious; maybe Aaron Andrews is every bit as good as Darryl Devine.”

SD: “Depends who you ask. Certainly not Devine.”

Phil’s Story Notes: In only three matches, I’ve put Andrews on an even level with most of the midcard and found someone he can have great matches with. In less than two years, there’s a good chance Devine vs. Andrews will be a top PPV attraction at the rate they’re developing.

Time Limit Draw @ 15:00

Chris Caulfield is shown in his hospital bed, hooked up to a few less machines than had been reported of most wrestling related websites. Sara Silver stands by outside the door beside Caulfield’s wife, Jennifer.

SS: “Folks, my scheduled interview with Chris Caulfield has been cancelled, I’m sorry to say. His doctors told me he began to go downhill again this morning.”

Jennifer begins to tear up a little bit.

SS: “However, I am told that Chris will be able to make it to the pay-per-view, where he will be making a very important announcement.”

Things wrap up very anticlimactically with Sara just lowering her microphone and hugging Jennifer as Shawn and Mickey speculate.

SD: “Damn that Eddie Peak. I wonder if we’ve seen Chris Caulfield’s last match.”

MS: “Just be glad you have all those old DaVE tapes, Doakes. He hasn’t been any good since then anyway.”

And before the show returns to the ring, the cameras cut to various locations around the arena, showing security and several dozen uniformed policemen guarding the entrances and exits.

SD: “Phil Vibert has not let the security slip one bit since that incident.”

MS: “I think Vibert might be scared for himself, if he thinks Peak is targeting old DaVE guys. I’m just sayin’.”

SD: “I’ve thought that, too.”

Savage Fury vs. Ben Williams/Jeremy Jazz

Result: A super basic, super hard hitting match in which Savage Fury dominates two very overmatched jobbers, ending things with the “Double HHS”.

Phil’s Story Notes: I’m not really sure what to do with these guys, which might be apparent to you. I can’t ignore their momentum or the fact that they are getting over, even in the face of a lame gimmick. Savages? Really? But, I’ll do whatever the fans say. I always have.

Savage Fury win via pinfall @ 2:42

*******

Shawn Doakes and Mickey Starr are ringside and begin shilling the next upcoming segment, the satellite interview with Peter Valentine but are stopped abruptly by something someone is saying in their earpieces.

Instantly, both of their faces sour.

SD: “Fans, I’m receiving word from our producer that Peter Valentine has stood us up and will not be appearing for his scheduled interview this evening. According to his assistant, there were more pressing business issues to tend to elsewhere….”

MS: “His assistant? Business issues? Either he’s totally lost his mind or we never really knew Peter Valentine at all, did we?”

A pre-produced vignette rolls, very similar to one that we saw last week. It is once again night time on a sprawling beach estate. It looks as though the massive party we saw happening in last week’s piece has wound down to the point where only a handful of hardcore fun hounds remain, most of whom find the darkest corners possible.

A loud splash comes from the poolside area; the same two men as last week slide up onto the pool’s edge from the water. The bikini girls that are lying around suddenly look interested in something, grabbing towels and rushing over to the guys and drying them from head to toe.

MH: “For us, it’s all about the party, yo. It’s about a little bit too much of a lot of things, you know?”

His friend nods.

MH: “We get what we want and we always have a good time doing it. Am I right?”

A fist bump between the two.

RS: “Dude, you know it.”

The Bomb vs. Alexis Lee vs. Zoe Ammis vs. Emma Bitch vs. Dharma Gregg vs. Jana Marie Bowen vs. J-Ro

-USPW Lucky 7 Women’s Invitational-

Result: Several women stand out in this special attraction match, but in the end it is The Bomb that stops things in the heat of the action, scoring the pinfall over Alexis Lee with a vicious tiger driver just as J-Ro rolls up JMB on the other side of the ring.

Phil’s Story Notes: This was a TV showcase for my ever expanding women’s division and I feel like I got a good feel of who I could use and who I can’t. I like them all but will have to be smart about it, financially.

The Bomb wins via pinfall @ 6:01

Belle Bryden and her entourage walk by Alicia Strong before turning back and fanning out to surround her. Alicia is unphased.

BB: “Look at you, Alicia. Why didn’t you go to the ring with J-Ro? You don’t feel like slumming right now, is that it?”

Alicia balls up her fists and pulls them up, expecting the group to jump her at any second, but they don’t. Belle just laughs.

BB: “Everything is a fight with you isn’t it, Strong? I don’t know why you resist it. You’re the only child of THE wrestling legend; don’t you realize what that makes you?”

Alicia’s hands stay up, but they are less steady by the second.

BB: “It makes you one of the chosen ones, Alicia. One of us.”

Raven Robinson and the red and green sweatered twin girls beside her nod and smile.

BB: “But until you figure that out……”

She steps closer.

BB: “I’m going to slap you around every chance I get.”

With that, everyone descends. Alicia is a bulldog, but cannot fend off four people, and is quickly down and getting stomped mercilessly by the group. Luckily, a few USPW security team members fly up onto the scene and pull the girls off of Alicia before things get really ugly.

Belle straightens her sleeveless top and looks down at the obviously hurt Alicia.

BB: “This Sunday, at “Born in the USA”, I’m going to beat you down and take the Women’s title from you, Alicia.”

She leans over Strong.

BB: “It’s too big a part of your identity; it’s getting in the way of you figuring who you really are.”

Andre Jones vs. Keith Vegas

Result: Andre Jones looks great, squashing Keith Vegas and wowing the crowd with a springboard blockbuster that nets the three.

SD: “There’s that move again, Mickey…..”

MS: “And there’s that Andre Jones, Doakes. The dominant one.”

SD: “But which one will show up in New Orleans to face Ford Memphis this Sunday? The focused man-on-a-mission we saw here tonight, or the sloppy and seemingly unprepared Jones we saw from a week ago?”

Phil’s Story Notes: Jones needs the bump in momentum and Vegas is a month away from being no longer under contract. Ta-da.

Andre Jones wins via pinfall @ 2:31

Aaron Andrews is in his locker room, fresh from the showers wearing only a towel, when Darryl Devine and Seduction burst in. For second, it looks like Andrews is ready for a fight, but as usual Devine only shoots off his mouth.

DD: “No more of this time limit draw bullsh*t, Andrews, I……..”

Andrews doesn’t even acknowledge him, turning back to his locker and pulling on a worn black t-shirt and jeans while they stand there fuming. Finally, he zips and turns back around.

AA: “If you want another chance to prove yourself against me, Devine, why don’t you see if the office will make a no time limit match for the PPV? I’ve got no objection to putting you through the ringer again.”

Devine’s eyes nearly cross he is so mad, but before he can say anything, Andrews continues.

AA: “I’ve tested myself against the best wrestlers that this business has to offer……”

Devine is boiling as Andrews pushes past him, grabbing his duffel and heading out the door.

AA: “…..and you, Darryl, aren’t anywhere near the talent level of the guys I’ve beaten.”

Andrews is gone before Devine is able to relieve the built up pressure, turning and laying a haymaker square into one of the navy blue lockers in the room, bending the door nearly in two.

Charlie Thatcher/Des Davids vs. Enygma/Bruce the Giant

-Team Vibert vs. Team USPW-

Result: The first of the two USPW vs. Vibert matches is a plodder, albeit a plodder that crowd was into from bell to bell. Enygma looks to be in trouble when Des Davids snags a ring attendants chair behind Baby Jamie’s back. But when he swings it, Enygma ducks, letting the chair hit the top cable and snap back into Des’s face. Bruce casts out his paw and pulls the chair out of the ring as Enygma falls on top of Davids for an easy three count. Thatcher is livid

Phil’s Story Notes: Another win for Enygma, another nudge back up to a respectable level for a main eventer. Besides, for whatever reason, Thatcher and Davids have it to burn.

Enygma/Bruce the Giant win via pinfall @ 8:39

Phil Vibert shakes hands with a couple of the uniformed police officers watching an exit backstage as he makes his way down a crowded hallway, presumably heading back to his office. Ducking in and out of the road cases and catching up to him fast, Sara Silver, fresh from the hospital, sticks a mike in his face and starts firing off questions. One stops Vibert dead in his tracks.

SS: “Where is your team’s fourth man? You said……”

Vibert sticks his jaw out and gets right in Silver’s face. She stops, intimidated by him, which gives him his smug look back.

PV: “I said…….he’ll be here.”

He straightens his tie.

PV: “And he’ll be here.”

With that, Phil starts down the crowded corridor again. Sara Silver watches him disappear among the other heads and suits.

Tyson Baine vs. Nicky Champion

-USPW World Heavyweight Title Match-

Result: One of the hardest hitting on-on-one main events on USPW TV in quite some time leads into the biggest moment of the Phil Vibert era. Tyson Baine and Nicky Champion tear the place up, going back and forth between the ring and the floor and even having a short brawl in the front row. Toward the match’s conclusion, Baine is able to wrap a short length of his chain around his fist and decks Champion with it before rolling him back into the ring. But when his attempt at a pinfall ends at 2 2/3 and Nicky begins powering up right in front of him with a small trickle of blood running down his nose and the fans surging behind him, Baine freaks out. Suddenly, Baine locks both his hands around the surging Champion’s throat and lifts him high before launching him with a “Hades Bomb” over the top rope to the floor, exploding the timekeepers table.

Phil’s Story Notes: This was a big attraction match that I booked solely to see if I could get a bit of a TV ratings boost right before the pay-per-view. I’m pretty sure that when and if Nicky Champion ever wins the World Title, it will not be on TV. Never say never though.

As Champion lays motionless, the rest of Team USPW begin pouring out of the locker room led by Sam Strong. Baine again grabs his chain from the ring apron and begins swinging it, covering a ton of ground with his helicopter-like attack which keeps Strong, Bruce the Giant, Rick Law, and Enygma at bay until Thatcher and Davids can get down behind them.

A huge brawl ensues, inside the ring and out. Security fills in every other open space as Phil Vibert walks halfway down the aisle to watch things unfold. When he pulls a microphone from his suit jacket, Doakes and Starr stop freaking out about the war being waged just long enough for Vibert to get a word in.

PV: “Ladies and gentlemen. I said I would deliver the goods and, by god, tonight, I’m going to deliver the goods.”

He is so damned smug, he oozes it.

PV: “Please put your hands together for……”

He seems to be waiting for something.

PV: “I said, please put your hands together for…..”

Still nothing; Phil’s face begins to turn red.

PV: “Godammit, doesn’t anyone who works here know how to do their jobs? I told you that when I said ‘put your hands together for’, you were to hit that music that I……”

Vibert storms onto the floor near the stage area, pulling back a curtain that shows where the audio/entrance guy has his equipment set up, only he isn’t there.

His little black stool is empty; spinning. Everything is unattended.

Suddenly a siren begins blaring, a police car rolls into an open area on the floor and two officers jump out of it about a hundred feet away from Phil. The one who jumped out of the driver’s side grabs his CB and yells out to Vibert.

“We couldn’t stop him.”

Standing shirtless with grime obscuring the details of his numerous tattoos……..

…….Eddie Peak stands just inside the entrance way baring his teeth and staring a hole in the back of Vibert’s head. Phil turns around so slowly, the close up shot shows every line in his face as he realizes who it is. He turns white as a ghost.

SD: “IT’S THE GREAT WHITE SHARK! EVERYONE OUT OF THE WATER!!!”

Then, just as slowly, as the camera moves back to get both men in the same shot, Vibert’s face begins twisting into a most horrible cartoon-evil smile.

PV: “I know you couldn’t stop him.”

The building is near silence.

PV: “No one can.”

Mouths hang open.

PV: “That’s why he’s with me.”

Phil snaps his fingers and points to the ring, sending the wild-eyed Peak sprinting into the sea of police security and USPW superstars. He grabs a chair from over the guardrail and begins going to work, tossing aside polo shirted security guard after polo shirted security guard en route to Strong, Bruce, Rick Law, and Enygma. The logo pops up in the corner of the screen as more security storms down the ramp, picking up where Peak has eliminated almost a dozen.

SD: “I can’t believe this! Eddie Peak is with Phil Vibert? After all of that? He is everything that everyone has ever said about him; just an absolute black hearted snake.”

MS: “Peak is an absolute madman, Doakes. We’re doomed. There’s no question that the balance of power in that match just shifted dramatically toward Team Vibert.”

SD: “Tune in Sunday! Who knows what could happen next! The future of USPW as we know it hangs in the balance!”

Peak on Team Vibert... Not bad, took me by surprise. A bit disapointed, but not "THEY" Disapointed.

1 Question: PWC. What Championships would the dreamed up company hold?

I like Peak on Team Vibert. He took out Caulfield as it appeared he could join Strong, Vibert helped Peak with this and pretended he was against Peak to keep Team Strong guessing and has given them just days to prepare for Eddie (not to mention Baine, Thatcher & Davids). Very sneaky Mr. Vibert :p

Give it time. I suspect we'll see a lot of that post-PPV.

In honor of election day here stateside, Phantom Stranger has been appointed 'Secretary of General Knowledge Question Answering' here and in any and all future diaries I write.

He's right, too. That factored in big during the appointment process.

If I had to wager a guess, I'd suspect a World Title, a TV Title, Tag belts, and a women's championship.

Provided Team Vibert wins, that is.

I did chuckle when I read that comment on your predictions a few shows back.

I'm glad you enjoyed the show. It's one of my favorite so far.

And Champion had to lose, dude. Baine is unbeatable. Baine is pain.

Nothing unique to the new company?

I had given it some thought, having a different sounding title, or one with a unique qualification for it. But I ran into two issues with it. First, I couldn't think of anything cool, or cool enough, to replace any of the existing ones.

And the second is my own experience as a wrestling fan. I always love the new interesting sounding belts for two or three weeks, they look cool and sound different. But they have no built in historical value like the more traditionally named ones do and I lose interest in them quickly. It's like the value the designation 'world heavyweight champion' has even when it has a different set of company's initials in front of it. You know that the top guy holds that belt, without question. A designation like 'TV Title' has a built in historical reference point that more or less tells us who should be holding it and what their position on the card should be.

This is all provided Team Vibert wins though, ok?
