Huntman
I just watched 8 Mile for the first time ever. Good movie. I seem to be saying that about every movie so far. I really liked it mainly because of Eminem and Michigan. I felt like some scenes dragged on in certain spots, but it definitely brought out the emotional side of me. Every role was great in my opinion. Each character brought their own thing and it really blended well. Eminem really stood out in this I feel. Worth checking out if you like rap or like hip-hop dramas.

I knew we had that conversation. For the life of me I can't find the thread but I did find an interesting thread from 2006.
BurningHamster
My Name is Bruce is worth checking out, not the best, but it is pretty funny at times. While on the Bruce Campbell subject, Bubba Ho Tep is also a solid movie. Cheesy fun with a few poignant moments.
Imarevenant
Any Adam Sandler movie! Also just seem my soul to take, Mirrors 2, and Case 39. All good movies. moon_lit_tears
Never, Eeeeveeer listen to this woman based on those recommendations Oh and the movie you described in the other post sounds like Fallen Pfft. Those are decent movies, and I LOOOOOOOOVE Adam Sandler. He's funny. Don't know. Will see if I can find that on Netflix and watch it. Wrong turn scared the sh*t out of me. Butterfly effect was a bit twisted. 2012 I enjoyed (I know everyone hated it) I don't like watching TV, but I enjoy movies. Just like Cruel intentions was a remake of a very old movie. Hugh I can't spell his last name (from The kings speech) was in it. He played the title role. Valmont. Pretty decent to me at least. I want to watch Salt. Gabbo
Thought Army of Darkness was garbage. 12 Angry Men, The Apartment, Cool Hand Luke and The Lost Weekend are all superb. Mostly anything by Billy Wilder is worth a watch like Witness for the Prosecution, Double Indemnity, Some Like it Hot and Sunset Boulevard as Bhk said. One of my favourite directors, along with the Coens, Scorsese and Hitchcoc k. Speaking of the Coens, watch their version of True Grit - fantastic film. brashleyholland
Oldboy - Can't say enough good things about this movie. It's Korean, so if you can't handle subtitles...LEARN to handle subtitles because this film is amazing. It's not a martial arts movie, but it does contain one of the coolest fight sequences I've seen in a film. The Fighter - Just awesome...whether you know who 'Irish' Micky Ward is or not, this is a great story and is really well acted.

If you've seen ANY HORROR FILM which got a major release in the past 6 years, you're probably alright. Absolute must-see.

Linsolv
As I'm sure everyone who's heard of the movie knows, it starts with the hero being "tortured." By that, they don't mean Hostel torture. He's locked in a room with no explanation for something like 15 years with only a local-access TV and some notebooks. There are 2 "gross" scenes in the movie in my estimation. In one, he eats a live octopus. It's a little gross, but not that gross. I was almost more grossed out by how bad his table manners were than by the actual scene itself. The second, he cuts off his own tongue. I don't remember that one as clearly. I'll try to find it on YouTube and edit in a commentary on how gross it is. EDIT: Oh, by the way, the movie is on Netflix in English if you want to see it. The dub is not bad. EDIT 2: Okay, just saw the scene. It's tastefully shot, with the camera not really showing you any of the "gore" of the scene, but it's shot in such a way that you know exactly what's happening. To me, someone who isn't a fan of gore-porn (I'm not SUPER squeamish, but I tend to look away from things that are gross) , the scene was really gross. That said, it's entirely off-screen, and his reaction afterward is not much different than watching someone try to sell an injury in a wrestling match. He screams, there's some blood, he crawls around...
Gabbo
I'd put that in spoilers ^. Oldboy, at it's heart, is a rich, thrilling and unpredictable story. You'll probably love it. It's awesome.

MLT, please go and stand in the corner and think about what you have said. Adam Sandler is the human equivalent of explosive Marmite. You either hate him or get blown up eating him! I kid I kid. Mr. Sandler is okay in some movies. As for films you should see, The Wrestler. That is all.
hellboy2
i would recommend Old Boy Ichi the Killer may not be everyones taste but i loved this film Society its one of those films that i have become obsessed with, i think its the last part of the film, that twisted my mind as a kid The Warriors as someone else said in the thread is a must see film Akira i'm not heavily into Anime/manga films but i was when i was a kid and this film has stayed in my mind since i was a little boy, i haven't got anything bad to say about this film and would recommend it to everyone i may have the title wrong on this i think its called Metropolis(not the old film) its another Anime/Manga and the story really got to me Seven Samurai this is the daddy of all action films, seven samurai vs forty bandits, just that alone makes this a must see film Once upon a time in the west, not sure if this would be to everyones taste but everyone should see this film something slightly hypnotising about this film

BHK1978
I kid I kid. Mr. Sandler is okay in some movies. I agree to me his movies are very hit and miss. I really liked the Wedding Singer and the one about 9/11. However, for every movie he makes like that there is a Little Nicky that pops up. True Grit was good but I liked the John Wayne version slightly better. Speaking of good John Wayne movies I would say take a look at McQ. Old Boy was good but very sick. It is not a movie for everyone.
Linsolv
Another film by the creator of Akira that I'd recommend even above Akira (which gets really confusing at some parts, drags at others, and really just has uneven pacing in my mind) is Steam Boy. Really under-rated.

Huntman
Thought Army of Darkness was garbage. I'm crushed by this. Army of Darkness is great. Little cheesier than the rest though. 12 Angry Men, Cool Hand Luke Yes, yes, yes. I agree. I love the original 12 Angry Men and Cool Hand Luke..well Paul Newman's eyes are just make me go head over heels for him. Speaking of Paul Newman. Slap Shot is my favorite hockey comedy of all time. "Puttin' on the foil!" Bad Boys with Sean Penn is worth checking out, like The Warriors, I've seen it many times. Very dark and gritty.
brashleyholland
Okay, I've heard numerous things about this. I have no problem with subtitles but I have to ask. Will a guy who isn't into torture porn like this? I don't mind blood and guts so much, but torture scenes or slow, premeditated violence just aren't my thing. It's not even remotely torture porn. It's a thriller/mystery/love story...there are hardly any gory or violent scenes. When people say torture porn I think of Hostel/SAW etc...a handful of hugely graphic scenes interconnected by a shoddy and pointless story. Oldboy is nothing of the sort. I guess the squid thing might gross people out...especially as the actor does actually eat a real, live squid for the scene, but it didn't bother me. The tongue bit mentioned wasn't particularly graphic either. There is a scene where a character SORT-OF SPOILER IN WHITEhas some teeth pulled with a wrench...but again, it's nothing massively gory or graphic at all. It was passed uncut with a 15 rating here in the UK...I believe every SAW film bar number one got an 18, if you want to compare it that way. brashleyholland
Couple more I'll throw out there... Kikujiro - A Japanese film staring Takeshi Kitano, who was famous for hardcore Yakuza/Cop movies and characters, playing against type in a heart-warming family movie. It's a sad film, but with a very light-hearted tone. Not my type of movie at all, but I loved Kitano in his other roles and watched this based on that alone. Totally fell in love with it. Battle Royale - Infamous Japanese film set in a theoretical near-future about the effects of rebellious and disrespectful youth on Japanese culture. In response to the moral downfall of the younger generations, Japan passes act that allows for a randomly selected class of school children to be placed on a remote island and forced to fight to the death once per year, in order to keep the kids in check. Controversial subject matter, but a very good film. Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery - I only include this because someone pointed out to me yesterday that it's almost 14 years since this movie was released, which astounds me and makes me feel old. It's one of those films that EVERYONE of my age has seen, but I guess it's possible that some younger GDS'ers might not have. Check it out, it's groovy, baby! BurningHamster
Ok cheers for the explanation of Oldboy guys, I'll probably check it out soon since I think I was given the wrong impression of that movie. And nice to see another Kitano fan around these parts. To contribute ... Heathers - An 80s teen comedy, but pretty dark. Unfortunately I have met only one younger person who who has seen this, but she loved it. Chopper - Australian film based on real-life underword enforcer Mark "Chopper" Read. Violent and funny, it's one of the few Australian films I don't hate with a passion. Encino Man - Perhaps Pauly Shore's greatest film in a stellar career, this is the heartwrenching tale of a man's struggle, with the help of two ne'er do well highschoolers, to adjust to life in modern day California after being frozen since the last ice age. Poignant, touching, erotic. This film is a triumph! For those who don't mind subtitles .... The Lives of Others - German film, about secret police and a dude under surveilance in East Germany. Tense movie, I liked it.
