Anyway this is the last time, I'm even going to respond to your blatant provocation, so if you come back with more, all you're going to be doing is preaching to the converted (i.e yourself).

It's easier to turn a blind eye to the negative impact that the thing which gives you pleasure has rather than abstain from it. That's what we call 'complacency'. If I just had a problem with anime because you enjoy it then you could easily refute the legitimacy of the argument that I made against it, but instead you chose to attack my character. That communicates to me that you acknowledge that my points have validity, but you don't want to accept responsibility for any harm caused by your continued interest in anime. Your only response is, "I just don't care." Very immature reaction. I'm not saying people can't or shouldn't enjoy anime, but there should be standards. We should be critical of things that bring us joy because those things are the most dangerous if they go without scrutiny.

But instead of politely walking away, and realising that you weren't going to change our minds, you had to keep pressing on with your attempt to dictate to us, how we should live our lives. At the end of the day, you're not going to change my mind and I sure as hell know I'm not going to change yours. Get it into that space between your ears, that no one else agrees with you or more to the point even cares. And I think Jaysin might be right, in the fact that this kind of discussion, isn't even allowed in these forums. So please stop stinking up this thread, and let everyone else enjoy my reviews and contribute discussion on a medium that we enjoy in a less antagonistic manner. This really is the last time, I'm responding to you, because I'm not even trying to 'win' an argument here. I'm just trying to get it through to you, that no one here myself included, wanted to engage in your 'discussion' in the first place. In hindsight we probably should have (myself included) just flat out ignored you, but at the end of the day people like you tend to irritate me enough to get a rise out of me, whether it's on a message board or in real life. You haven't even really attempted to. You just said you didn't care one way or another. If you are contributing to racial prejudice, you don't care. You made that clear. Let me ask you something, you make sure all your clothes are american made, 100%? Because if not, using your logic, you support child labor since it's a pretty open secret your clothes have achieved all time lows in prices while maintaining good quality because corporations have outsourced child labor. Have you ever traveled to the Caribbean as a tourist? Because those island shave horrific governments, rampant civil rights abuses, and human trafficking concerns just miles outside the tourist hubs, particularly in Jamaica and Nassau. And I hope to god you don't enjoy any illegal narcotics, such as dun dun dun....THE DEVILS PLANT, a/k/a pot since cartels use that money to fund their illegal activities. Me, I've bought clothes, been to the Caribbean, and I puff once in awhile. I care about those issues, but if you want me to tell you i sit there crying in my apartment after puffing a bowl and settling in for some anime, I say to myself "How on earth can I be happy, there is injustice in this world, injustice that I have participated in by enjoying these products!" I have to tell you, I can't give you that satisfaction. Yes, people enjoy products that have social justice concerns attached to them. No, they are not required to beg for forgiveness for liking those things. Anyway, back to topic as I haven't checked in for forever, thank you Tiger for the Agame no Kill review and the PArasite review. Let's say I do have a personal distaste for anime, does it invalidate my observation? I said nothing against anime except for the one point I made about the way the characters are drawn, and you are refusing to address that one point, preferring instead to make baseless accusations against my motives.

It's also ridiculous to say I'm forcing people to agree with me. That's literally impossible for me to do. I said I would accept an opposing view that defeated my proposed logic. Very few attempts have been made to do that in all the replies directed at me.

Insisting that I would harass you for not responding to me is another baseless assumption. I welcome you to not participate at all in this specific discussion. If you don't wish to debate, then the best thing to do is to not respond to me. You have chosen to continue the discussion by responding to me, and then you threaten to report me if I reply back. The best way to end a conversation is to disengage from it.

I don't care if you report me. If I'm asked not to participate in this thread, I certainly will, but it isn't right to make false accusations against me and then threaten me if I try to defend myself. Obviously you don't have to "hate" yourself. I never said that, or implied that at all. But, yes, I believe you should always ask yourself if what you enjoy could be harmful in ways that aren't immediately apparent. Buying 50 Shades of Grey on Blu-Ray may seem harmless until you consider the cultural repercussions that one purchase may have. Most people don't give it one thought, and that's why 50 Shades of Grey persists as a modern cultural juggernaut that rivals literature like Pride and Prejudice and The Divine Comedy.

To answer your question: yes, if I knew that a clothing brand I was interested profited from child labor, I would refrain from purchasing their products. Same for anything else I might enjoy. We've already become way too complacent.

Mr_ Tricky added to my ignore list (which means I don't have to read his endless Social Justice Warrior waffle).

Unlike St.Tricky, I'm not going to continuously preach and tell everyone what they should and should not be doing, but if we all just ignore/no longer respond to him, he should eventually go away. He claims that he isn't preaching, but how else can we interpretate his posts, when he keeps going on and on, instead of doing the right thing and walking away from the thread.

Remember to log in first, otherwise you still get to see what someone has posted from your ignore list.

If he does keep bleating on trying to defend his holier-than-thou view points and justify starting an antagonistic debate no one wanted to be part of in the first place, he will only be talking to himself. Though if he does keep posting in this thread, he can expect a warning from one of the mods (because though I won't be able to see what he is posting, I know it will just be him beating the same dead horse)

He claims that we are all the 'immature' ones for ignoring the 'issues' related to watching anime (which as we all know is just an excuse for him to attack it, because he personally doesn't like it and desperately want's everyone to agree with him) but he's the crybaby round here, stamping his feet up and down because no one here wants to blow smoke up his backside, and agree with or actually care about anything he says.

And to hammer the point home to you Mr Tricky, as to why we all feel that you are trying to force your viewpoint onto us, because it clearly needs hammering home: Whilst you might not actually be directly dictating to us to agree with you, the fact that you keep pleading with us to 'Think about it' clearly shows that you are begging for your views to be validated by one of us. You're either too ignorant in regards to your own preachy demeanour or you're fully aware of it and just a pompous antagonist. But in all honesty, I can't confirm whether you are the former or the latter- either way your presence in this thread, has only served as a source of irritation to everyone else.

Lets hope he does finally sees sense, leaves the thread and stops trying to antagonize us all, but I would be pleasantly surprised if he actually manages to do that. But he'll probably just whine again, that I'm personally attacking his character. Hey I'm just calling a spade, a spade....he's a preachy SJW.

Then again this is the same fellow, who a few years back now in this thread, threw out the ever so mature 'Weeaboo' insult at me, during a discussion when he attacked me for liking Madoka Magica (a quality anime by the way, where he completely missed the point of the initially 'cute' art style hiding darker depths beneath the surface). So he clearly likes dishing it out, but can't take it when someone calls his own character into question.

If Mr Tricky, dislikes anime and wants to live his life in a saintly manner and be concerned with social justice issues that's up to him (as Crownsy tried to get through to him, it's not that we don't care at all, it's that most of us don't live our lives to a 'perfect' moralistic code). What I object to (and have from the very start) is his blatant attempts to try and guilt-trip us into agreeing with his own view on the world.

* WIT Studio is an off-shoot of Production I.G, and Attack on Titan was the first anime that the studio worked on.

Synopsis: In a post apocalyptic world, the final remnants of humanity are forced to live behind the towering walls of a fortified city, to escape the huge man eating giants known as Titan's that roam the lands outside. Though trapped inside the walls, with the Titan's on the outside most human's cling on to chance of survival they have been given...until one day a Titan much bigger than all the rest, breaches the walls and ends this fleeting peace.

Eren Yeager, the son of a doctor and an admirer of the Survey Corps (the only one's in the military brave enough to venture outside the walls and do battle with the Titans), witnesses the horror of the Titan's destruction first hand and personally vows to wipe out every Titan that walks the earth.

Setting: Attack on Titan, takes place in an alternate fantasy 'Earth', with the last remnants of humanity living in a walled city, that appears to somewhere in Central Europe, given the characters somewhat Germanic sounding names.

Recommended Viewing Age: Teenagers and Up: Attack on Titan got a 15 certificate from the BBFC in the UK, and I would say that's about right. There is refreshingly no fan-service to speak of, but though it has the sort of 'cool' action that will appeal to boys considerably younger than 15, the show is not at all suitable for children due to strong, bloody violence with graphic death scenes almost on par with something as notoriously bloody as<a href="http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum...&postcount=363" rel="external nofollow"> Berserk</a>.

Action Level: High- Unless you want a show that contains nothing but action, Attack on Titan should satisfy those looking for something with exciting 'fight' sequences. The David vs Goliath battles, between the humans with their high flying 3D Manuever gear and the terrifying Titans, succeed in being both unique and exhilarating.

Moe/Kawaii Level: Non existant- There is nothing cutesy, nor 'moe' about this show.

Animation Quality/Art Style: Though effectively an off-shoot of Production I.G, WIT Studio's first anime is at the very least an impressive debut from an art and animation stand point. The first point of success is the human character designs, that fly in the face of current convention and truly stand out from the crowd. With a look that gives both a nod to old-school anime, whilst also looking original and modern, the character designs are all given a hard outline, that gives the anime adaptation a look of a graphic novel being brought to life.

The character designs for the Titans, aren't quite the overwhelming triumph, that the human designs are, but overall they succeed in looking generally scary and freakish. Incidentally whilst the special Titan character designs look more 'awesome' it's actually the somewhat silly looking regular Titans, that look like mentally deficient giants running around naked, that are truly horrifying.

The background art is attractively detailed, as the series grounded yet fantastical setting is brought to life. And whilst their may be the odd re-used frame of still animation, overall the animation levels for Attack on Titan are mightily impressive, primarily during the battle sequences when the human's are using the 3D Maneuver Gear. Words cannot describe just how spectacular the animation is for those sequences.

Music: Linked Horizon, provide the first opening theme "Feuerroter Pfeil und Bogen" (aka Guren no Yamiya) a suitably stirring piece that gets the audience pumped up for the epicness about to unfold. It's always difficult for a second opening to connect in quite the same way, when following in the footsteps of such a striking opening but "Die Flügel der Freiheit" (aka Jiyo no Tsubasa) once again by Linked Horizon, with it's triumphant sounding militaristic opening manages to hold it's own.

First ending "Utsukushiki Zankoku na Sekai" by Yoko Hikasa is a stirring, emotional ballad that fits well with the underlying theme that there is a real human cost, amongst the chaos. The second ending 'Great Escape' by Cinema Staff is a relatively decent slice of alternative rock, but feels like something that would be more suitable as an adrenalin pumping opening theme, as opposed to a reflective ending song.

Hiroyuki Sawano's OST, is built around the sort of epic sounding orchestral pieces you both hope and expect to be in a series like this and overall it does a successful job in further enhancing, the theme of 'epic struggle' that permeates throughout the story.

Plot & Characters: The beginning of Attack on Titan, introduces you to a world, where the remnants of the human race, are living in fear and hiding behind the gigantic walls of a walled city, that is divided into 3 layers (Wall Sina the inner wall that houses the government and the noble classes, Wall Rose, the middle wall district that houses the district populated by the 'middle class' and finally Wall Maria populated by the underclass). When a never before seen Colossal Titan breaches the outer wall, the humans realise, that they can no longer simply hide behind the walled city and that they need to fight back against the never ending nightmare that are the Titans.

The main protagonist of the story Eren Yeager is directly affected by this, when he see's a loved one perish in front of his own eyes. Already dreaming one day of joining the Survey Corps within the military, the Titan's rampage only serves to deepen Yeager's resolve and determination to fight against the Titan's.

One of the knock on effects of the Titan's running rampant in the district between Wall Maria and Wall Rose, is a refugee situation, that see's tension between those trying to get behind Wall Rose and those already in place there.

After a time jump, we see Yeager and loyal best friends Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert, join the Trainee Corps, this builds up to another battle taking place that ends with a shocking twist, that effectively 'changes everything'.

The second half see's the show primarily follow the Survey Corps (the special unit, that Eren dreams of joining at the beginning) with the human race now able to effectively able to fight fire with fire, but in being able to do so, it leaves many people uneasy that they have such a volatile and dangerous 'weapon' at their disposal, in their battle against the Titans. In turn they also learn that whilst the regular Titans, display little in the way of logic or intelligence, the new breed of 'special' Titans that have appeared are a whole different proposition. In turn it is hinted that whilst the man eating giants that are the Titan's are horrifying abominations, there may well be even darker forces at play within humanity itself, trying to drive it further to extinction.

As the main protagonist of the series, Eren Yeager is your typical fiery shonen hero, that starts out 'weak' but grows stronger as the series progresses. Driven by burning hatred for the Titans, Yeager isn't a natural gifted fighter but his determination see's him hold his own against his gigantic foes. Whilst Yeager has many of the tropes associated with a cliched shonen protagonist, he does have some interesting character development, that basically see's his combination of growing strength and burning rage become a double edged sword.

Clinging loyally to Eren, are his two childhood friends Mikasa and Armin. Mikasa who is practically Eren's sister, feels a sense of debt to Eren and his family, and has an almost suicidal like devotion to Eren, that leads to her joining the Trainee Corps along with Eren. As it turns out Mikasa, is a much more gifted solider than Eren, so gifted that she's a certified bad-ass with skills only bettered by only a handful of more experienced campaigners.

Despite her combat skills, Mikasa's determination to be Eren's protector see's her put herself in danger- something that often puts her at loggerheads with both her commanding officers and even Eren himself, who does not want Mikasa to constantly see herself as his 'guardian'.

Armin, who is somewhat of a weakling at the start, seems about the least likely person to join the military, but perhaps driven on by witnessing the horrorific rampage of the Titans, Armin feels the same duty as his two best friends to bring the fight to the Titan's. Physically weak, Armin feels inadequate as a solider at first, but with his high intelligence, he finds his place on the battlefield as a brilliant strategist and with his team-mates believing in him, Armin graduallly becomes braver and more assertive of the course of the story.

Though many of the supporting characters, meet their peril at a rapid rate, there are some members of both the Trainee Corps and Survey Corps (aka 'The Scouts') that manage to leave a stronger impression. Those able to leave the most notable impression from the Trainee Corps are Jean Kirstein, a cynical pragmatist, who wishes to settle into an easy life as part of the Military Police, he is effectively a counterpoint to more idealistic and fiery individuals like Eren. However as the campaign against the Titan's wears on, Jean's viewpoint's gradually change from being less self centred and cynical, whilst his ability to recognize his own weaknesses in face of the Titan's, reveals that his untapped potential as a pragmatic leader.

Meanwhile the other interesting character from the Trainee Corps, is Annie Leonhardt, a gifted fighter to rival only Mikasa amongst the Trainee Corps, Annie however is rather apathetic towards the fight against the Titans, and her wishes to have an 'easy/normal life', but it's possible that her apathetic persona, is only there as a shield to hide her true feelings/purpose.

Notable to the story, amongst the more experienced members of the military, there is Doc Pixis (the eccentric commanding officer of the Southern Territory, willing to use and put his trust in unconventional methods), Erwin Smith (the stoic commander of the Survey Corps, who will go to ruthless lengths to protect humanity), Levi (a captain in the Survey Corps, considered to be the strongest soldier and Eren's idol at the start of the series- the reality is a man with a harsh and unsocial personality, but because of his unrivaled ability he is well regarded by his subordinates) and Hange Zoe (a highly eccentric woman, who is deeply involved in researching the Titans, through experiments on captured specimens).

Analysis: Pretty much every year, there is an anime that comes along, that is hyped up by everyone, to the point that everyone MUST SEE IT! In 2012 that anime was Sword Art Online, the following year it was the very anime I am reviewing here Attack on Titan. Inevitably with anything that garners such a huge fanbase, heavily hyped shows also lead to a degree of backlash, in the case of Sword Art Online that backlash was partially deserved, in the fact that it was never as great as the fanboys made out, nor as bad as the cynics would have you believe. But we are not discussing that series, we are assessing Attack on Titan, where does 2013's anime juggernaut fall on the scale of living up to the hype and buzz?

Regardless of whether the story itself manages to deliver or not, Attack on Titan already has half the battle won through the sensory experience it provides. With a striking art style that immediately stands out against more generic offerings during this current era of animation, outstanding animation and a stirring soundtrack, Attack on Titan would leave a strong impression even if you were watching in Japanese without subtitles and couldn't understand a word of it.

At it's heart Attack on Titan, is a shonen action/adventure series, with the typically determined but weak (at the start) hero, that grows stronger in his quest to take down the 'Big Bad'. Obviously though given the bloodshed, and ruthless body count of the series, it's not a shonen action series for kids. That's not to say that the story is straight forward and dumb, far from it, as between the thrilling and genuinely tense action, the plot often looks into the way society would react when faced with a crisis as deep and desperate as humanity being on the brink of distinction.

In terms of delivery, Attack on Titan finds a nice balance between providing plot and character development and providing plenty of action based thrills- those who complain that this series would have too much 'talking', will want to look for something with the most simplistic and basic of plots- another thing that points to the series not being for kids, but more specifically to that anime fan who still wants their 'Awesome!' action sequences but one that also provides an equally thrilling story to stink their teeth into.

As already alluded to Attack on Titan, is not the series for people who become overly attached to fictional characters, because be prepared to just about anyone to perish at any point, whether or not they've managed to survive an entire arc or just popped up in one episode. Whilst this does lead to a huge cast of disposable characters, it still manages to maintain a core of strong characters, that either get absorbing character development (Jean Kirstein, Armin Artlett), or whose enigmatic motives make them equally as interesting (Erwin Smith, Levi).

Another thing that Attack on Titan, manages to get right is that it takes it's story seriously. I always feel that when it comes to a fantasy action adventure like this, the creator(s) of the story need to decide whether or not the audience needs to buy into the story as serious business, or absurd stupidity, those that try to mix the two often end up with something lacking in focus. That's not to say Attack on Titan is completely devoid of light relief, but it quite rightly uses it sparingly and when it does come, it provides a welcome break from the extremely tense drama and ruthless bloodshed.

The plot is also deftly written, in the fact that it build up each arc to it's own thrilling conclusion, but then throws in a hook to the next part of the series, by providing a 'game changing' revelation'. The use of cliff-hangers during Attack on Titan is at times masterly and will leave the viewer, begging to see the next episode.

That's not to say that Attack on Titan, is completely devoid of flaws. The character of Mikasa Ackerman, borders on Mary-Sue status, whilst it's good to see a genuinely strong female character, the fact that she has combat abilities surpassed only by Levi, is alluded to being one of the prettiest characters in the series and is the only Japanese character (not actually said, but most should be able to put one and one together) makes her a bit of a writers pet. Mikasa's 'Superwoman' characterization isn't enough to spoil enjoyment of the story, but it is right on that threshold where it could turn into something detrimental.

The other factor, that could possibly be perceived as a weak point when it comes to Attack on Titan, is the ending. Whilst it succeeds in bringing satisfactory conclusion to the final arc of the series, from an overall story standpoint it leaves things very open ended with a long list of questions unanswered. At the time of release and with no second season announced, this would have been a major defect when it came to the overall assessment of the series, however a second season has been announced for 2016, thus the open ending of this first season has now become a moot point- given it's success, the announcement of a second season comes as no surprise, the bigger surprise was that the announcement took so long.

There are quite possibly other things in the plot that you could criticize, if you really wanted to nit-pick at every minute detail, but fault to be found with this show would be just that 'nit-picking' and primarily Attack on Titan succeeds in delivering on it's two main goals of providing nail-biting action and getting the audience emotionally invested in the plight and struggle of it's main characters.

Final Verdict: To put it simply, Attack on Titan ranks amongst the very best of the fantasy action genre, with the likes of <a href="http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum...&postcount=691" rel="external nofollow">Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood </a>and <a href="http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum...&postcount=752" rel="external nofollow">Fate/Zero</a>, two other series able to find that holy grail between providing both thrilling action and an engrossing plot.

Whilst its not guaranteed that everyone will or should like Attack on Titan, from my own personal perspective this is an anime that actually does live up to the hype, and many who say it doesn't are just those who say it is overhyped, just for the sake of railing against something that has become (in this case deservedly so) popular. I was prepared to be underwhelmed and came away loving the series even more than I thought I would.

Is the Dub Any Good: Funimation's dub of Attack on Titan, will likely only truly turn off the most critical (i.e the sub purists). Whilst I wouldn't necessarily put it amongst the best dubs (be it Funimation or anyone else) and it perhaps lacks a standout performance amongst the cast, it is a dub that is consistently 'good' with everyone in the cast doing a reasonable enough job with the role they are given.

That cast sees ADR director Mike McFarland, put together a cast that is a nicely balanced mix of seasoned Funimation campaigners such as Trina Nishimura (Mikasa), Josh Grelle (Armin), R. Bruce Elliott (Dot Pixis), J.Michael Tatum (Erwin Smith) and McFarland himself (Jean), complimented by fresh talent brought over from the L.A dubbing community such as Matthew Mercer (Levi), Lauren Landa ( Annie) and perhaps most crucially of all Bryce Papenbrook (Eren).

The trend for Funimation to expand their horizons, and bring in L.A based talents (perhaps due to the anime dubbing scene there itself shrinking somewhat) in recent years has certainly been noticeable and it has helped to freshen up a V.A roster that whilst very competent was starting to sound a little stale.

I watched the first few episodes of Attack on Titan, but the goofy designs of the Titans put me off. They come off comical instead of creepy to me and it kills the mood of the show for me. I loved everything else about the show, but the Titans just took me so far out of it I couldn't continue.

Good review of AoT, i would rate it a B but that's mainly on the Titan's designs. The show itself is great and one of the high marks that i point out for other people to watch. I have yet to rewatch it but that's mainly as i'm watching a few of the current shows.

Of course I'm not going to lie and say that I don't feel a sense of pride and vindication, when someone come's along and say that one of my reviews is 'spot on', but I know my word isn't gospel and I don't expect the readership here to bow down to my opinion as such.

All I truly hope for is that my reviews always come across as fair and balanced, whether or not it's an anime I feel deserves praise or one that deserves criticism.

That's part of why I posted my disagreement about the Titan design, to help bring positive debate back to the forefront.

I agree about the goofy designs of the 'standard' Titans (though the variants are a different story.) It wasn't enough for me to stop watching the show though. I greatly enjoyed it as a whole and agree with most of what Tiger wrote. I didn't have much of an issue with Mikasa though.

I'm far from a sub snob or anything like that, and in fact the vast majority of anime I've watched has been dubbed. I watched this one subbed however, and later watched a Youtube clip from the dubbed version. It just felt...wrong. Perhaps I'm turning into a sub purist (or maybe it's just that I have the original Japanese voices in my head now and anything else would sound wrong to my ears.)

There are shows I've watched subbed first, and just couldn't get along with the English dub. It's probably not so much that the dub is bad per-se, it's just that the voices sound 'wrong' compared to what was heard first. And I think, that feeling come's through even stronger, if it's a show you really liked. For example, as you know I really like Madoka Magica- I saw that first in the Japanese, and when I heard the dub, it just sounded completely wrong to me...but I think it was less a case of the dub being flat out terrible and more the case of myself being unable to give it a fair shake. Then again the opposite can be said about the Steins;Gate dub...I already loved that show in sub, but then the dub still manage to really impress me and in some ways to my surprise I actually preferred the English performances. So it's not an exact science, but from my own personal perspective, I think I get less attached to the original Japanese, if the show was only average at best in the first place.

I can't watch Dragon Ball(including Z) in Japanese at all. Goku's adult voice drives me insane. Maybe it's just I've been listening to Sean Schemmel do adult Goku's voice for 20ish years so anything else just sounds weird, but most of the other voices bother me too.

So it definitely works both ways in my opinion.

I watched the first episode of Attack on Titan and it just didn't appeal to me for some reason. Sometime I will go back and give it another shot though since it seems to be well reviewed and thought of and I have enjoyed similar themed shows.

I don't really mind either way on sub or dub, although dubbed its a little easier to multi-task as I don't have to concentrate on reading the entire episode. Only place I really hate subs is trying to watch anime on Netflix, but that's because they use this awful pale yellow color for their subs and its hard as hell to see against anything but a dark background.

Synopsis: A trip to the supermarket for highschooler Yō Satō , ended up with him laid out on the floor and all he wanted was a bento box at half price. He soon learns that there is an all out battle between customers for half priced bento, with players known as 'wolves' competing for tasty food at bargain prices. Yō realises he needs to get stronger in order to have any chance of getting his hands on a half-price bento box, and thus under the tutelage of Sen Yarizui , joins the Half-Pricers Club at his highschool in order to do so.

Recommended Viewing Age: Older teens (approx 15+ and up): The overall combination of regular fanservice, mild violence and some sexual references, make Ben-To a series unsuitable for younger viewers, but one that should be fine for more mature teenagers.

Action Level: Medium- Though the series spends much of it's time being a slice of life/high school comedy, the 'Bento Brawls' provide plenty of melee based action throughout the series.

Moe/Kawaii Level: Moderate- There are series that are considerably less cute and moe, than this one but on the other hand no-one can really label Ben-to as a 'moe-blob' series either.

Animation Quality/Art Style: The art-style here from the character design to the background art isn't anything groundbreaking but it's executed well enough, with noticeable detail and effort put into the aisle's of the supermarkets that hold the 'Bento brawls'. The animation for the 'Bento Brawls' is done particularly well, often giving you the feeling that you are amongst the melees yourself.

Music: Opening theme, the rock edged slice of J-Pop "Live for Life: Ōkamitachi no Yoru" by Aimi is exactly the kind of high energy song, that you would expect to be matched up to an equally energetic show. One episode has an alternate opening, sung by the seiyuu for Ayame (Emiri Kato), it's another energetic J-Pop sung, that really do enough to stand out on it's own, compared to the opening used for the rest of the series.

The ending theme "Egao no Hōsoku" is sung by the seiyuu for Yarizui (Mariya Ise) and is the sort of sweetly sung, old fashioned pop ballad that is in typical contrast to the more energetic opening song.

Plot & Characters: Ben-To revolves around the world of people fighting over half price bento boxes. Whilst these all out brawls, might look like a chaotic free for all at first, they have a set of rules and code of honor to be adhered to. Before each Bento Brawl, the participants wait for a supermarket employee, referred to as a 'God of Discounts' to put the half price stickers on the bento boxes. Once the stickers have all gone on, and the 'God of Discounts' has left the shop floor, the brawl can begin.

The strongest fighters are known as 'Wolves' and are known by their nom de guerre (alias) such as the 'Ice Witch' or 'Beauty by the Lake', whilst newcomers and the weaker fighters are referred to as 'Dogs'. The over-riding plot of the series, follows highschool student Yō Satō's rise from lowly Dog to one of the strongest 'Wolves'. Despite the absurdity of the bento brawls, the story has an underlying message about success only being fulfilling if it's truly earned, with each brawl often containing antagonists who use methods that go against the honour of the bento brawls.

Satō is your standard average highschool student protagonist who is short of money (and thus the motivation for him to buy food at bargain prices). Whilst he has perverted thoughts he never intends to act out on them (if he does it's purely through accident, rather than design- which unfortunately for him seems to happen a lot). Satō is initially warned off coming to the Supermarket by Yarizui (one of the strongest 'Wolves' on the bento brawling scene), but his determination to keep coming back (despite suffering several ass kickings) wins Yarizui over who takes Satō under her wing, as her protege.

Yarizui is the president of the Half Price Food Lovers Club and someone who has a rather stoic demeanor, however over the course of the series we learn that beneath the surface she is someone who genuinely cares about the well-being of her subordinates/friends. Outside of her expertise when it comes to the world of Bento Brawling, she does appear to be somewhat naive about the 'world' outside of Bento Brawls.

Satō however is not the only new recruit, to the Half Price Food Lovers Club, Hana Oshiroi a girl who befriends Satō also ends up joining the club. An easily excitable girl, her hobby is to write Yaoi (boys love) erotic novels, with the characters usually inspired by 'the Wolves' that attend Bento brawls (usually Satō). Though not a strong fighter, she often finds success in Bento brawls, by merely sneaking past and grabbing a Bento for herself, whilst the strongest fighters are engaged in intense battle.

Notable characters amongst the supporting cast include, Ayame Shaga (Satō's cousin that goes to a different school, who also happens to be a 'Wolf'-who tends to tease Satō by hinting that they could be more than just cousins), Ren Nikaidou (the leader of a group known as Gabriel Ratchet- that ends up having a 'frenemy' type of relationship with Satō). Shaga's obliviously unlucky friend Asebi, Ume Shiraume (the yandere lesbian student council president at Satō's school- who often abuses Satō' for getting too close to her childhood friend Oshiroi) and a pair of oddball identical twins, known by the exact same name Kyo Sawagi.

Analysis: The idea of Ben-To is a ludicrous one that revolves around people fighting over half priced Bento, is as gloriously silly as it sounds, and the Bento brawls themselves are a rip-roaring parody of the fighting tournament story, complete with the hero going on a personal journey of growth from being one of the weakest participants to being a certifiable badass by the end of the story. All in all the basic premise of the Ben-to holds up really well, and it manages to get across it's simple but effective storytelling, through the absurdity of people fighting over cut priced food.

Once you get the beyond Ben-To's unique selling point, it boils down to being a light, un-taxing anime with the sort of humour, where your mileage is definitely going vary. If you're the kind of anime connoisseur that will turn their nose up, at more low-brow variety comedy, then you probably aren't going to enjoy Ben-to as the comedy here is made up of the usual low-brow anime comedy staples based around slapstick, fanservice and sexual references. From a personal standpoint that whilst it wasn't the sharpest, wittiest or most 'on point' comedy, I did find Ben-to, to be consistently amusing throughout and a show that managed to squeeze plenty of mileage out of it's absurd premise.

That's not to say that Ben-To isn't beyond more concrete grounds for criticism, as opposed to the admission that it's generally low-brow brand of humour won't be for everyone. Whilst most of the cast aren't exactly the deepest or most engaging characters with very little in the way of growth (OK admittedly Satō, does 'grow' as a character, but his development is of the predictable and basic kind) they are at least likeable and the likes of the walking disaster zone Asebi and hyper yaoi fan-girl Oshiroi make for consistently amusing streams of light relief, amongst the serious business of the Bento Brawls (if you can actually call them serious business). However there is one glaring exception amongst the cast, and that's the character of Ume Shiraume. Whilst Shiraume's psychotically possessive lesbian character, was mildly amusing at first, her constant unwarranted abuse towards Satō becomes tiresome and an unfortunate blot on the serious. What makes it worse is that the viewer never gets to see any satisfying comeuppance for her frankly appalling behaviour.

The conclusion of the series also ends up being a mixed bag- whilst the ending does deliver a sweetly satisfying conclusion with both Satō's strength as a Bento brawler and his relationship with his mentor Yarizui strengthened by the conclusion of the series, the final brawl itself is a disappointment and gives the unfortunate impression that the studio were running out of the budget they had been given by the end of the series.

One final thing, Ben-To's episode titles themed around a Bento Box central to each episode is both inspired and amusing. Can you really look at episode titles like "Be Sticky, Natto Okra Rice Bowl Dish with Cheese Topping Bento 440kcal" or "It was a Warm Gentle Flavor that Reminded Me of my Grandmother. A Japanese Dish that was Kind to Both Body and Soul. Plum and Dried Baby Sardines over Rice with Plenty of Seasonal Vegetables Stewed Bento 480kcal" and not think that this series, isn't going to be at the very least an amusing way to past the time?

Final Verdict: Ben-To isn't without it's flaws, but overall this is an amusing diversion of a series that squeezes plenty of juice from it's bonkers idea. Is the Dub Any Good: Funimation's dub headed by Austin Tindle (Satō) and Trina Nishimura (Yurizui) features performances that are solid, rather than outstanding. Synopsis: Koko Hekmatyar is a dealer, that works for HCLI a large shipping corporation that secretly deals in the arms trade. With rival arms dealers and law enforcement agencies a constant thorn in her side, Hekmatyar surrounds herself with a team of skilled bodyguards (most of them ex military veterans). Her latest recruit is Jonah, a child soldier born into chaotic conflict, who despite being proficient in combat, hates arms dealers.

Recommended Viewing Age: Older Teens and Up (16+): As expected from a series about the arms trade, the series has plenty of gun toting violence, on top of that there are adult situations and a moderate amount of fanservice (the odd bit of nudity).

Action Level: Pretty High: Whilst Jormungand isn't non stop action all the time, the series is chock full of shoot-outs and explosions, and even throws in some hand to hand combat scenes for good measure.

Moe/Kawaii Level: Very Low- Rather than non existant, because though this isn't particularly a cute or moe show, some of the female characters, notably Koko do occasionally display some cute and quirky behaviour.

Animation Quality/Art Style: Character designs are fairly close in style to <a href="http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum...&postcount=157" rel="external nofollow">Black Lagoon</a> (the series, Jormungand will inevitably be compared to) though there are some striking character designs that manage to stand out, notably the main protagonists Koko and Jonah. One thing that is noticeable in regards to the character art, is they are often noticeably muscular, including the women- it has to be said that Valmet is both well endowed and seriously ripped.

From an overall standpoint, White Fox's art and animation in general for the series is consistently good, rather than spectacular. The set pieces of the animation, are of course the action sequences- whilst they lack the oomph and wow factor to be found in Black Lagoon, they do however seem slightly more realistic in their execution- even if the antagonists usually have 'Storm Trooper' accuracy and the protagonists combat skills are heightened to borderline super-heroic levels.

Music: Opening for the first season 'Borderland' sung by Mami Kawada, is a kick-ass slice of pumping 'The Prodigy' style techno-rock, that is a perfect fit for the series. Opener for 'Perfect Order' 'Under/Shaft' sung by Maon Kurosaki has a tall order following such a striking order from the first season, but the driving/anthemic rock sound of the song, makes for another good fit and though I would still give the edge to Borderland it manages to holds it's own as an OP.

First ending theme "Ambivalentidea" by Nagi Yanagi is a sombre/haunting ballad, that provides both a nice contrast to the fist pumping opener, and also hints more at the serious/dangerous ramifications of the protagonists line of work. Yanagi also sings the ending theme for 'Perfect Order' the on edge of chaos rock of 'Laterality' - it's not a bad song, but out of all the OP's and ED's it's the one that makes the least impression.

Taku Iwasaki's soundtrack does a fine job of complimenting the action/storytelling on screen- a well balanced mix of pumping electronica and subtle orchestral pieces sprinkled with the regional flavour of the location Koko and her team find themselves in.

Plot & Characters: Jormungand follows the life of a shady arms dealer and her team of elite bodyguards, as they run into and away from trouble involving government agents (mostly the C.I.A), rival gun-runners and unscrupulous clients, such as rebel paramilitaries.

Over the course of the two series, the story is divided into individual arcs (mostly two episodes in length), that often shine the spotlight on one member of the team that gives some insight into their background and how they ended up being part of Koko's team. As the episodes are brought together as a whole, they also give an over-riding sense, that despite the shady business these people are involved in, they genuinely have each other's backs and have become a 'family' of sorts. Amongst the more prominent and crucial individual arcs, see's one member of the team try to gain revenge on the man that wiped out their unit and scarred them for life and an arc involving one member of Koko's team being a mole for the C.I.A.

There is also an over-arcing story, that ultimately in a moral sense puts the series two central protagonists Koko and Jonah, at loggerheads with each other. The major plot of the series, which only really comes to the fore during the final third of 'Perfect Order' revolves around a masterplan that Koko and her best friend, the unconventional Japanese scientist Minami 'Miami' Amada, that lets say is morally questionable way of trying to achieve world peace.

Though Jonah, doesn't narrate the series throughout, the story is semi seen through his eyes, with us often hearing his inner-thoughts/memories at the start/end of an episode. Jonah's experiences of growing up in a war zone, has made him emotionally repressed, rather than completely devoid of emotion- he's still very much a child in a lot of ways, but his 'gun in hand' up-bringing means that despite not even yet being a teenager, he is already a stoic battle hardened soldier.

Despite regularly handling guns from a young age, Jonah hates them and arms dealers, who he holds responsible for selling the tools that lead to his village and more to the point his parents being wiped out. However, not through choice but through necessity, in order to simply survive- he finds himself running with the very thing he despises.

Because many of Koko's team, were on opposite sides to child soldiers such as Jonah in their previous employment, there is initially a sense of distrust towards the new recruit, but both Jonah and Koko's team come to trust/befriend each other over the course of the story. Jonah, like the rest of the team before him- also builds up a sense of loyalty towards Koko- he still maintains is hatred of arms dealers but he appreciates that Koko takes good care of him and that if he wasn't protecting her, his lot in life could be a lot worse.

Koko Hekmatyar is a complex character, whose sometimes strange childlike demeanour plays off against her skill as a shrewd businesswoman and somewhat masks her darker machinations. Despite the rather amoral business she deals in, Koko maintains high moral standards of her own (she does not like being paid in drugs) and truly cares about her team, seeing them more as her family, than simply disposable employees ordered to protect her.

The tight knit unit includes a Delta Force Operative, a Finnish special forces operative, a Japanese special forces operative, a solider of the Italian Army that fought in the Balkan wars, a Gulf war veteran, a SWAT team sniper and a Mafia driver- these comprise of sniper's (the more battle hardened) veteran Lehm and Lutz, intel and communications experts Toju and R, explosives expert Willee and hand to hand combat specialist Valmet (whose affections and admiration for Koko, go clearly beyond just friendship, let alone professional duty).

Outside Koko's HCLI team, more prominent members of the cast include rival arms dealers such as Koko's brother Kaspar (whom Jonah has a frosty past with), and C.I.A operatives such as the persistent Scarecrow and the shady 'chessmaster' Bookman. I won't go into too much further detail about the supporting cast, as the characters only really effect the individual arcs they play a prominent role in, though some do re-appear over the course of the series.

Despite the story taking place in the dark and shady world of arms dealing, Jormungand does often time to lighten the mood, revolving around the quirks of the various characters, leading to a series of running gags, such as Koko acting really weird when drunk, Lutz constantly being shot in the backside and Valmet's infatuation with Koko.

Analysis: Though one couldn't call Jormungand an exact carbon copy of Black Lagoon, it will inevitably draw comparisons to that series, with both following a band of anti-hero's caught up in shady business and being chock full of high octane gun toting action. There are of course those who will look at Jormungand and stubbornly declare it a Black Lagoon rip-off but honestly from my viewpoint the series manages to stay the right side of 'spiritual cousin' as opposed to shameless tribute act.

First off the action, is rarely as awe-inspiring or as thrilling as Black Lagoon, but few shows are and the action sequences in general are done well- though they do end up taking a slight backseat during the series second half (Perfect Order) with the focus shifting more towards character study and the machinations of Koko's ultimate goal. It's a subtle shift, that is actually a welcome one- giving Jormungand more focus beyond being a series of loosely based adventures following an 'A-Team' inspired crew of anti-hero's. Though 'Perfect Order' is a slightly different animal to the first series of Jormungand, it seems discourteous to review one series separate from the other. In essence to judge the first series of Jormungand merely by itself, would mean casting opinion on an incomplete story.

As with Black Lagoon's band of pirate mercenaries, Jormungand's crew of gun-runners, are an easy set of protagonists to like, despite ultimately being in the view of society 'bad people'. What both Jormungand Black Lagoon go to show, is that few people are inherently evil but circumstances and the viewpoints from a different perspective to theirs, often cast people as being so. Perhaps more vitally it also goes to show, that those perceived to be on the side of 'good' are often willing to achieve their goals through means that can be perceived to be 'evil'- this is particularly highlighted during an arc involving a revenge crazed CIA operative, their loyalty and duty of protect their country from terrorists honorable but their methods in doing so, just a monsterous as the 'beasts' they fight against.

Koko Hekmatyar the co-protagonist of the series is an engaging and intriguing character. The story does a good job of building up the picture of an enigmatic, charismatic leader that earns the trust and loyalty of her subordinates. A lady of many sides, Jormungand consistently hints at a darker edge beneath her often quirky, positive outlook, before revealing her ultimate plan- one that has honorable intentions as it's end goal, but the execution of such can be perceived to be down-right evil. Plans that bore questioning and moral conflict from those close to her.

This brings us neatly onto the execution of the ending itself- one that might frustrate and be admired in equal measure. The ending is very much an open ended affair, that asks the viewer to judge Koko for her goals, and doesn't tie everything up into a neat bow at the end of the series. From a personal standpoint, whilst such an ending did initially seem unsatisfying, after the dust had settled I came to admire the brave stance of going with an ending that doesn't deliver what the audience wants or expects but challenges the viewer to form an opinion for themselves.

Jormungand's large cast of supporting and guest characters, does mean that some of them feel barely important or largely unexplored, including a few on Koko's team of elite bodyguards but most of the cast get their time in the spotlight and end up making a solid contribution to Jormungand's story, one that ends up being a much more character driven piece than one moved forward via it's over-riding plot.

Where Jormungand does struggle at times, is with the execution for more specifically the integration of it's light relief. At times the light relief can be amusing, but it feels at odds with the murky 'shades of grey' world, represented by following a team of gun-runners- at times leading to the show feeling as though it makes the world of gun-running almost look like a fun career choice.

In some degrees Black Lagoon encountered the same problem with it's at times (admittedly awesome) but over the top action sequences, but Lagoon integrated it's comedic side more successfully with more biting black humour, as opposed to the 'slice of life' character quirk silliness to be found throughout Jormungand.

Final Verdict: Jormungand provides an action filled thrill ride combined with a thought provoking 'shades of grey' undercurrent, whose slightly flawed execution, means that it falls just short of being great, but still comes strongly recommended to those pining for more grittier fare in their anime.

Is the Dub Any Good: Funimation's dub for the series is on the whole pretty good but not without criticism. For series like this one, where the story lends itself better to an English dub, than the original Japanese, one perhaps holds them to a higher standard.

And whilst I don't really want to bring up the comparison again to Black Lagoon, Jormungand's dub just doesn't reach the heights of it's spiritual cousin- maybe it has something to do with the lack of 'profanity'- something that actually brought a realistic flavour to Black Lagoon's dub.

In the main roles, I personally liked Anastasia Munoz's subtle take on the varying nuances of Koko's often conflicting character traits, as opposed to veering wildly between them and putting on a more scenery chewing performance. On the other hand Micah 'I'm not Johnny Yong Bosch really' Solosud, struggles with finding the balance between Jonah's conflicting status as pre-teen 'elementary school age' child and battle hardened war veteran, ending up with a performance that unfortunately ends up sounding flat.

One thing (that I didn't get to at the point I was watching it when I recommended it) to note re Valmet and adult situations, is that there's a point in Perfect Order which, well, I'll put in white text for spoilers.

There's a moment where Koko gets drunk and Valmet goes to help her get ready for bed. The problem is Koko is so drunk at this point she's basically unresponsive, and Valmet's suggestive dialogue, while probably just comical fantasizing, can be implied as Valmet taking advantage of Koko.

The possible interpretation is probably not what the writers meant as Valmet and Koko's personal relationship (if there is one, it's never made clear) is mostly played for laughs: Valmet professes to get a nosebleed at praise from Koko in the early episodes, for example.

Also, I couldn't agree less with your review of Attack on Titan. I absolutely despise it and see it as a horrible horror subgenre mash-up that ends up bringing out the worst cliches of the subgenres it takes from. It's got a decent art style and even then if I were grading it, I'd give it an F. The story is just too full of obvious holes and pretty much every single character is an unlikable moron. ESPECIALLY the protagonist (seriously, who thinks JUDO is going to be of any use against a 50 foot giant?). I don't even like the action scenes that much, and I don't understand how they can be considered innovative. I mean, I guess in just anime it is, but unless you've never heard of Spider-Man before I don't see how the movement system is new. I just really don't see the appeal, because to me the whole thing just comes off as something that was created like Axe Cop was, but without any charm or humor in it.

The show kinda needs a conclusion before it gets to that point, just ask Season 5 of Game of Thrones. I don't love the show really and cannot for the life of me figure out where the hell the yaoi fanshipping community for this came from, (given that Eren is a 6 at most), but F is like......latter seasons of Prince of Tennis bad. Likin this thread Tiger, and I'm prolly gonna check a lot of this out. You should really give more chances to sports anime though. Prince of Basketball and Initial D aren't really doing the genre justice, and I think you'd really like some gems such as Cross Game, Haikyuu, Eyeshield 21, and Ookiku Furikabutte. People are reluctant to even get into sports anime, mostly because it doesn't get overseas exposure for some bizarre reason, and also because not everyone is a fan of sports. Really though, its not that different from animes centering around people killing each other with swords: Its just another backdrop for telling a story, and a lot of good stories are told due to the huge pride involved in Japanese athletics (particularly at high school level).
