At the Press Conference was spoken:

 

- Dana assured that Dan Henderson will be the next contender.

 

- Jones said he wanted so much to fight with Henderson.

 

- Sonnen said he preferred not to face Henderson, but can not get the dream that he has the belt.

 

- The struggles of the Middleweight Division, vs. Shields. Rockhold and Le vs. Phillipou may indicate a future fight for a title shot.

 

- Do not know if Hughes will retire after this fight.

UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen - Resume, Results and Post Fight

 

Sonnen knocks Jones in the second end and becomes the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion

The light heavyweight division has a new champion! That's right, this Saturday night at UFC 159, Chael Sonnen became light heavyweight champion of the UFC. Sonnen has competed in the WEC middleweight title, and UFC middleweight title (twice), and was defeated in all. With more a dispute of title of his career, Sonnen was the underdog of the night, facing the new UFC star Jon Jones, and had everything out again defeated.In the first round all hoped Jones would use his striking skills against Sonnen. But who got the takedown was Jones who tried to elbow harm Sonnen. In the second round Jones kept the fight to his favor, and Sonnen dominated. In the third round, Sonnen Jones got the takedown and worked a violent Ground'n Pound, and with a strong nudge rocked Sonnen and seemed that ending was only a matter of time.

In round 4 Sonnen was better, avoiding the takedown attempts and still getting a straight right that Jones did go back. The fight was for his last round, Jones needed only one more round to get to be the largest holder in light heavyweight. And when he walked up the fight for a unanimous decision in favor of Jones, Sonnen connected a strong right cross that led Jones to immediately knockout missing just one second to finish the fight. Sonnen had suffered a similar defeat to Anderson Silva, when he was submitted in the last round. This time the luck arrived to the new champion.

 

On his return to the UFC, Marquardt knocks out Hughes.

In the Co-main event, Nate Marquardt back in the UFC, now fighting in the welterweight division, his first challenge would be, the former UFC Welterweight Champion and Hall of Fame Matt Hughes. At the beginning of the fight Matt Hughes got a takedown in an attempt to attack Marquardt and avoided the submissions that he was tempted by Marquardt. Hughes came in the second round with the same strategy, trying to put down but managed to avoid Nate and remained standing.

With the fight a draw the last round would be decisive, with veteran Matt Hughes tired, Nate Marquardt landed a takedown in Hughes, and with a strong sequence of blows in the ground, ended the fight by knocking out Hughes.

On the main card two fights in the middleweight division, in the first fight veteran Cung Le, Constatinous Phillippou won by TKO in the first round. Le used her game of feints and precise blows, to hit with a spining back kick, Phillippou cringed and Le was striking until the referee stop the fight.

The fight between former Strikeforce middleweight champion, Jake Shields returning from suspension and Luke Rockhold made ​​his UFC debut. A victory would Rockhold close to a Title Shot. Shields got better and soon used his grappling game, complicating for Rockhold. In the second round Rockhold was able to control the fight better and avoided the floor of Shields. Already in the last round the fight was more balanced with good time for both fighters, and end two judges scored 29-28 for Shields, and one judge 29-28 for Rockhold. Duffee concluded the former interim champion Shane Carwin in the second round, after applying a drop, Duffee worked his ground game and got a Heel Hook and forced Carwin to tap. In the duel in the Bantamweight Division, Brad Pickett won, the former WEC Bantamweight Champion Brian Bowles, by split decision, with the judges scoring 29-28 and 30-27 for Pickett, and 29-28 for Bowles.

In the preliminary card Tim Kennedy and KJ Noons newcomers to the UFC, won in their debuts. Tim Kennedy defeated Tim Boetsch by TKO in the second round already in the lightweight division, KJ Noons Al Iaquinta easily won by TKO in the first round showing in striking a large arsenal. And UFC veteran Rousimar Palhares won again, and finished Alessio Sakara with an ankle lock.
