[Cverse 97] Anyone else playing it?

Recommended Posts

Derek_B, my hat off to you sir. I am madly in love with your mod.

I was reaching a creative brickwall with the default dataset, but didn't want to leave the Cornellverse behind. Thankfully, your mod was just what was needed.

I'm now happily ensconced in a HGC game and I really like the way you've balanced it. It's also great fun to be able to play with Sam Strong and Rip Chord in their (very tail end of) prime.

Who else has played or is playing this mod?

RPW all the way.

Got a game running with them where I've made the product intergender and teamed Black Cobra up with The Cat (Catherine Quine) to face Lance Henderson & his band of misfit cronies including Cousin Ezra, Ota and Brains McGhee. CobraCat hold the RPW Double Act belts.

Steve Flash left me to take over the DaVE head booker job (I had Nemesis set up IPW like 15 years earlier.)

It's a fun game so far.

Love it soooo much. So many cool things to try. Can you get PGHW past BHOTWG? What if you gave then a junior division and jumped on the Emerald Angel and Magnum Kobe?

For the record, would you guys consider it cheating to set PGHW's "Big 6" to Excellent Potential?

Other fun stuff: Can you turn NOTBPW into legitimate competition to SWF/HGC before the Stones get too old, and will there amazing June 01 class be able to carry the torch?

Winning the Tri-State war with freaking anyone

The world of Lucha is fun here: Both promotions have great talent base, and the likes of Nicolas Lopez, Axxis Jr., Del Muerto, Mexican Ghoul, and Masked Rebel sitting there to move on. I'm more of a MPWF guy in 97, where as I love OLLIE to pieces in 2013.

If you want a real challenge... turn GCG around. I dare you.

No. The real challenge is keeping AMW afloat with all those darn narratives that cripple you :p.

I love CV97. I realized I am a master at booking wrestlecrap (Hollyweird) in 1997 while SWF REEKS of early 90s WWF. Heck, I even used the awesome logos kam has done that resembles early 90s WWF in the game.

Firstly, thanks for the kinds words. :D

For the first time I've actually got a long term game going in the CV97, using a 0 pop, 0 prestige company owned and booked by Onishi Takuma. I think I had some momentum to start with and I gave myself 250,000 in the bank too so that I could set up my own dojo... four and a half years later (July 2001) and I've hit 200 shows, I'm up to Cult size and the #3 company in Japan behind the National powerhouses of BHOTWG and PGHW. It has been a gloriously fun game that I've booked a few shows at a time when I've had the chance and turning Cult was huge for me as it meant I could secure most of my top guys to written deals and have a solid foundation for the future, as well as not having to worry about sharing talents with the other big companies. :) In terms of Popularity we are 9th just now... in terms of Influence we're up to #4, with BHOTWG, PGHW and recently returned to National SWF (in that order) being ahead of us.

It's not easy growing in Japan.. 5SSW's girls have been getting better and better, with them having 4 of the top 10 in the 2000 Top 500... and since no-one else is using them, that's been pretty epic for them. I'm considerig starting up my own women's division, gave my newly opened development company a division for that purpose. BHOTWG and PGHW have signed away many good prospects leaving me relying on some unproven homegrown talentss, slightly past their prime stars, many gaijins and the kinds of people who are bookers in other companies and could hate me at any moment (which has happened a lot). Still, it hasn't stopped us. Our two top workers have been Tasuku Shinozuka whose performance row is fantastic now thanks to a huge number of matches... his body condition is BAD and he probably only has a couple more years in him, but he's hit B+ rated matches for me a couple of times and has been my top star for most of the game. My NEW top star is someone I picked up at Regional in the most unlikely bit of awesome ever.... Buddy Garner went unsigned for more than a year and I managed to pick him up. He's not been pinned or submitted in almost 80 matches (though has been on the losing end of a couple of tags) and has won my Heavyweight Grand Prix event AND became world champion at my season finale, Crowning Glory just past in April. He's learning fast (I think) but I make sure to keep him in the ring with some of my top psychology guys...

Speaking of psychology, I've got several guys in the mid 70s but only a couple above that. I recently signed Larry Wood (out injured with a Shattered Knee) and he got successful surgery on that... he's going to be my top guy for that and will soon be debuting when he recovers. He's going to steal the Peak Brothers as his minions soon from my other crazy stable, The Lunatic Fringer (I Butcher, The Insane Heat, Insane Machine, Peaks) and the war is going to cause carnage. I'm looking forward to booking that in the undercard as I push Wood up the card (wrestling as Kaos, an Abyss like monster) to eventually feud with Tasuku Shinozuka... the only skills Tasuku is improring in are hardcore and psyhology.... the two things Wood has in abundance. They'll be awesome together.

Meanwhile I'm trying to build up some Japanese stars to the main event, including a young genned worker named Tadayuki Yamura. He's a crazy technical worker with insane entertainment skills and strong amera skills... reckon he could be an ace one day and I'm trying to build him up to perhaps beat Garner for the gold a year from now... maybe.

All in all... I'm having an awesome game. Got a good heavyweight division filled with too many foreign workers... a tag division with 5 teams at A/A* experience... and a Junior division packed with great talents, though I'm going to be trying to get some of the talnet migrated to HGC soon. Yosuke Narita/Awesome Thunder... Super Joshuya.... Dark EAgle... I want them all, so that my Junior division MIGHT merge with the Heavyweights and then I'll be able to bring in a women's division free from the guilt of hoarding too many talents for too many divisions. :p

I'm working on a CZCW game my rosters been poached quite a bit especially by NOTBPW how signed their PPA guys to written contracts at the end of 1997 and then jumped to national in early 1999 and signed away a lot of my guys. Chris Perkins was an over two year reigning SoCal Tag champ with Whippy the Clown but Whippy gotten taken by NOTBPW so Perkins took the opportunity to don the insane machine mask and although he's already become a main eventer he's been working through dominating the lower card as he builds toward a shot at 2+ year reigning SoCal Champion Bryan Holmes.

My roster includes

Acid

Black Eagle

Bryan Holmes

Chris Morrisette

Clark Alexander

Dog Fyte

Flying Jimmy Fox

Fox Mask

Human Arsenal

Insane Machine

Jimmy King (Gentleman Jim King)

Lance Henderson

Man-Darin

Mario Heroic

Matt Sparrow

Pecs

Rich Money

Richard Blood

Tom Gilmore

Adrenaline Rush

The Biggz Boyz

The Fly Boys

The Gilbert Brothers

The New Wave

The Young Guns

Also I started a money sharing, talent trading alliance with RPW, 4C and MPWF which has helped me keep my lower guys from taking too many losses by bringing in outside talent.

I'm three years into an RTG-lite game, and it looks like I'm going to win the East Coast Wars (despite being based in Great Lakes and never having run a show east of Detroit). If I'd realized the spillover from Tri-State was going to drag me into their regional battles anyway, I would have just started there for the increased importance.

The big story in this save was the drug-related death of Sam Strong in April of '98. This set HGC (he was their booker, having retired from the ring in late '97) and the entire American industry quite a ways back. At least I assume that's why every American region's importance dropped to the low end of their allowable range. There was no tribute show for him either.

In January of 2000, HGC remains at Cult and if anything is backsliding. SWF is holding the course, doing good but not spectacular. NOTBPW is kicking all kinds of ass but have made no move to expand to the US. Phillip Roberts was Wrestler of the Year for 1999 and NOTBPW workers also took spots 2, 3, 4, 7, and 20. I'm tempted to take control of them with a second player just long enough to cut deals for US TV and PPV, but I'm reluctant to mess with the RTG nature of the game any further.

BHOTWG fell to cult in mid-99 but continues to roll along as if nothing happened (they didn't even reduce roster). 5SSW was doing amazing (and would probably be cult or even national by now if they had TV) until early '99 when Thunder Hike walked out on them. PGHW is doing okay. BBW is in debt and went through a massive round of layoffs. Twice. They're still bringing in guys for tours though.

Still nothing happening in Australia.

New promotions include BSC, L-Ring, PWMax, EX-USA, PAW, UCR, DNCW, CWWF, LAW, 21CW, and UCW. The last two just opened. The others are chugging along but most have unpopular products so aren't growing very fast if at all. BSC opened in April '97 and as of Jan 2000 they have yet to run a show or even fill out a full roster. Nonetheless they continue to resign the staff they have. Note that pretty much the same thing happened in my other CV97 save, so maybe something to look into?

The only company to fail so far is AMW. No one else appears to be on the ropes but after a first year where every company was going gangbusters, show ratings seem to be in a world-wide slump. Except for NOTBPW, of course, and to a lesser extent SWF and BHOTWG.

EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention in case it wasn't clear, but I LOVE THIS MOD!

CGC'97 is tripping me up compared to its 2013 counterpart. There's a greater disparity in popularity between the top guys and everyone else. Seems harder to build stars by having them win their way up their card. There isn't that pre-existing ladder from D to D+ to C- to C etc. Unless, of course, you get out your chequebook and hire NOTBPW guys to Written deals. Which feels like cheating to me... but is right there for the taking. Just brought in Craig Prince, Phillip Roberts, RK Hayes, Nemesis. Haven't played since, but stat-wise it just got a lot easier.

I'll also point out having mild disappointment at not having DeColts to build. Early 20's and already superstars. I've got Fog of War on, so maybe they need development as workers.

Did notice a few of my renders in there, which was a pleasant surprise.

Yeah, I've noticed a few female only companies opening up even though there aren't enough wrestlers around to fill them out properly. Is something I'll be looking into for the next version of the mod. I've been taking lots of notes form my own playthrough, lots of little things I've picked up on to make things interesting. Adam also released an updated Cornellverse with employment histories so I'll be using those to change various people around a bit and bring the CV97 into line with the Cornellverse proper. :)

@Self: I always love your renders, they're always awesome. :D

In my HGC game, I'm determined to try and build up my homegrown stars.

To that effect, I've paired Sam Strong up with Liberty to take on Dread and Tyson Baine (I HATE the name BLZ Bubb). Basically, each side is an established name and a superstar-to-be in a Clash Of The Titans sort of story arc.

Meanwhile, Rip Chord and Ricky Dale have been feuding over the top belt and while Chord's come out on top so far, I'm doing my best to build the future RDJ up as a legitimate top face.

I'm also doing my best to protect my tag, hardcore and cruiserweight divisions. I avoid having any cross-division matches because otherwise, there's a tendency for me to mine those divisions for job fodder for the heavyweights.

The only trouble I'm having is with my hardcore division. Even with some added East Coast talent, I just don't have many workers who can handle the hardcore product. I'm tempted to massage that belt into more of a "brawling" title, since good brawlers are more common. Or I might just treat it as a 24/7 title fought for with no count-outs or dqs but not necessarily in true hardcore fashion.

Anyone book a hardcore division successfully?

I have played it off and on. The thing that annoys me is a lot of promotions are not face/heel balanced. I always try to have an equal or near equal amount in every promotion I run but in some of these promotions it is not possible to do so without destroying my budget. There was one East Coast War promotion that had something like eight more heels than faces.

Other than that I have enjoyed it.

Since the actual mod thread is buried somewhere. Arson Wells is set to neer wrestle even though his bio states he has returned to active wrestling after an injury and wrestler is set as usually. I manual set him to cruiserweight but you might one fix that in the next run through of the data.

<p>I love this mod. I'm almost two years into XFW game and I really like them. I've always enjoyed hardcore-stuff, but DaVE and more recently PSW have never felt like home to me so when I found XFW I instantly liked them. </p><p> </p><p>

I've taken some bad hits to my main event due owner goals and raiding, but I've managed to hang right behind DaVE in East Coast Wars. After getting non-agression deals with HGC and SWF I've managed to cut some roster losses, but still losing Rampage soon due owner goal/age. Genghis Rahn just left. Frankie Future went to CGC last fall. Dean McWade and Robert Oxford came in to fill my upper card and have done really well. </p><p> </p><p>

Recently debuted Larry Wood as Brother Abram, heel amish character (religious zealot gimmick) who started feud with Grandmaster Phunk over Abram attacking Nicole Kiss because her promiscuous behavior. Really enjoying booking this one.</p><p> </p><p>

Also trying to build some youngsters through tag-division, Steve Gumble and Harry Allen are doing face-grunge rocker thing and slowly getting over and New Wave is starting to get known. Really pissed off that Peak Brothers have awful tag-chemistry. Don't really know what to do with them at this point. </p><p> </p><p>

Eastern US is starting to really boil with PCW and PAW recently coming in and with all four original East Coast Wars companies still figting pretty much side to side.</p>

Tried playing CV97 for a bit and I enjoyed it so much I imported some SWF or ex-SWF workers not in the default database for my diary game. Two of them - Richie Pangrazzio Jr. and Rory McCallum - play key roles in the storylines, Pangrazzio as a heel manager, and McCallum as the authority figure of my NXT-style show. The rest (Blazing Flames, No Way Jose, Sid Streets, Louis Williams, even WrestleBot 9000) are on PPA contracts and make appearances from time to time as nostalgia acts, much like retired WWE wrestlers appear on specials like Old School RAW or milestone episodes.

I think it would be great, especially in '97 say compared to '13 with internet not being what it is today. While a regionally over worker like (hypothetically) RDJ might be massive in Texas, that "spill over" effect might go across nation so say C locally but D- nationally. Or whatever you decided to do. That'd be more effective. Because tape traders and whatnot. And magazines. And the rise of the internet.

My first instinct is that I like the idea, but I have reservations. I always believed that the flat-across-area starting pop for c-verse was intended to make sure there was a viable quantity of workers for any region you might want to start up in. i.e. it lets you (the designer/modder) off having to create a pile of local workers for every region.

Now obviously it would be cool to have tons of local workers in every region (through which you would have to sift for gems among the dirt), but in practice that's a ton of modding work and a ton of processing required when you play.

Perhaps it could be implemented on a case-by-case basis? Certain workers that stand out as likely to be significantly more or less popular in a certain region could be adjusted, but the majority can be left as is.

Side thought: Just musing here, but I always thought it would be a nice feature if a worker could be flagged as a sort of "hometown hero" in a specific region. They would get increased pop gains and reduced losses in that region and probably have a higher overness cap there. Not a vital feature but it would be neat and could have a significant effect on how you book a national promotion (e.g. "We're in Texas this week, better put RDJ in the main event").

Thanks!</p><p> </p><p> As for the other idea, I definitely support doing popularity on a regional basis. It would make for a more immersive game world and better reflect just how wrestling was in that era. If you're willing to put the work in, I'm willing to play and enjoy it. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

<p>Ok, Coach Dick Pangrazzio and Richie Pangrazzio Jr. (father and son for those who don't know) found a karaoke machine backstage and entertained the entire locker room with an over the top duet. They now have a job forever and ever.</p><p> </p><p>

Especially because it made me remember this scene:

1. I love this mod as I already posted in the original thread. Sadly by 2013 so many of the CV guys I've loved are now past their prime and this is a chance to relive their glory days.

2. I just started a game with Roman Heidenseik. I guess I'm not really doing the challenge since I started with a local company, but thought it'd be fun to have a user character with no skill.

3. Is their a list anywhere of well-known CV workers who are listed under different names? I just discovered Insane Machine when I went to look for him b/c I wanted to sign and team him with Primal Rage. I'm afraid I'm missing out on some guys (obviously I know Taylor Morton is Acid, but others)

I agree with this sentiment 100%. I haven't even had a proper game with the CornellVerse 2013 yet.. The only CVerse this time around I've been playing is CVerse97 and I like every year, I love it :p
