New Year, New Booker, Familiar Face

For years New York City Wrestling has provided old fashioned entertainment for the whole family. Originally started by The Stomper, little has changed in the way the company has been run once ownership was passed onto Larry Vessey. While the company itself looks to keep to the format that made them popular, it seems the year 2013 will feature a new booker as Black Hat Bailey announced he would be stepping down from the position at the end of 2012.

The ring veteran has been perhaps the top heel of the company since he joined in 2006 and was installed as Head Booker. He has been a likeable presence in the company and will remain with New York City Wrestling as a wrestler only. A surprising development given his age many would think he would look to hang up his boots and remain booker. He cited in an interview in November that it wasn't so much age or being overworked, but a loss of interest in the booker position.

The man taking over as booker will be referee Michael Bull. Bull has been with the company since the year 2000 and has apparently been working with Larry Vessey and Black Hat Bailey the past few months to get him prepared to fully take over the booker position at the start of 2013. Bull has always been a favorite of The Stomper and it looks like he has earned the trust of Vessey as well. He inherits an aging roster with several of the more popular stars are well over the age of forty and some close to or over fifty.

Bull's goal is to bring in some new faces that fit well with the company and will remain with New York City Wrestling for years to come. He has several offers pending and hopes to have most people signed in time for their first show of the year, Rush Hour. When asked who he has contacted, Bull declined to say and will wait until the ink is dried on the contracts before revealing hew signings.

Along with new faces coming in there will be a few leaving the company as well. Fern Hathaway has been released as well as high flier Geoff Borne. Borne was an attempt to bring something different to the company, but things never fully panned out for him. His split with New York City Wrestling is an amicable one and there are chances that he may return in the future. Fern has been with the company for several years, but has always been a bit of a problem maker behind the scenes. Currently she was a backstage interviewer and nothing more and the cost to keep her around combined with her attitude made it an easy decision to part ways with.

It looks to be a new era for New York City Wrestling, but for all the fans out there it is one that looks to do little to change its image. The Old School way of thinking will always have a home and Michael Bull looks to keep it that way.

The New Faces of NYCW!

Michael Bull had made it clear he planned to sign new talent that would fit well with the company, and it looks like he did well in keeping his promise. Seven new signings have been confirmed and there is a rumor that two more names are signed, but being kept secret. Bull claimed in his search he was looking for people that had a good work ethic and weren't going to cause problems behind the scenes. The result is some established veterans that can put a youth injection into the upper reaches of the card as well as some managers that can handle a microphone well unlike the recently released Fern Hathaway.

When asked if there were other criteria in his search, Bull responded he was staying away from some wrestling style. The fans enjoy good old fashioned wrestling and brawls and the Geoff Borne experiment showed that smaller, faster fighters don't seem to interest people. For that reason he decided to refrain from signing workers that use Lucha Libre or Japanese Junior styles. He also looked to shy away from the workers that often come off as psychotic when in the ring. When asked why his response was 'You can go to PSW for that garbage'.

With the likes of Ford Gumble and Jack Griffith being added to the roster, it does seem silly to call this a youth injection, but even at 35 and 37 respectively the pair are still over a decade younger than Black Hat Bailey, Steve Flash and Whistler. Both are are pretty big names for a company like New York City Wrestling and the addition to Rayne Man is viewed as a good decision. Quentin Queen is a bit of an unknown, but he is a young man that will get to work with some veterans that will give him invaluable experience as he tries to find his niche in the wrestling world.

Isabella Encanta, Roxy Kitten and Dharma Gregg are all going to be used as managers and their clients are remaining a mystery for now. Dharma and Roxy were both members of the risqué Babes of Sin City promotion that closed down not long ago, but both now are looking to move away from that image and have reinvented themselves as managers. Little is known about Encanta aside from the fact she worked the independent circuit in Canada.

All these names are set to be part of the first show of the year, Rush Hour, in some form or fashion.

NYCW Empire Championship

Roger Cage © vs Honest Frank

The big question about this match is what to do with Roger. You know he is going to be taken away from you, the question is when. What I normally do is have him defend his title in January, normally for me he is not snatched up until February. So if he is snatched up in February, I just book a show in February before I lose him and I have him drop the title to Steve or Frank.

NYCW Tri-State Regional Championship

The Masked Mauler © vs Sammy the Shark

I really hate the fact that Mauler is the Tri-State Champion at the start of the game (I see him as a tag team wrestler) so I usually take the title off him right away. However, I am not sure if I like Sammy as the champion either.

NYCW Tag Team Championship

The Southern Stars vs ???

I know this goes against conventional wisdom (As most people do not expect to see a major title change right at the start of a diary) but I am going to go with ??? winning here. Mainly because IIRC, the Southern Stars are both low on the card and with the influx of new talent you have coming into the NYCW, I think you can find a better team to be your tag team champions.

Steve Flash vs The New York Doll

There is no world where NYD should beat Steve

Jack Griffith vs Whistler

Rick Sanders vs Bulldozer Brandon Smith

Ford Gumble and Rayne Man vs Money and Muscle (Monty Trescarde and Andrew Harper)

This is simply because Ford and Rayne have more popularity.

Thanks for all the comments and predictions so far. I have to admit I didn't get into the TEW series until the 2010 version and NYCW was probably my first love. The whole 'stuck in the 80's' type vibe it had just appealed to me and I always enjoyed the aging roster. If anything the only part that saddens me about the 2013 version is that Dazzling Dave Diamond left and has problems with Vessey. It is nice to see the familiar faces and I like that some guys like Bulldozer Brandon Smith ended up in the company.

I am surprised it has honestly taken me this long to take a crack at this company in a diary since it remains my favorite. Maybe it is because in a way I was worried I would do something to mess with the old school vibe it had. For me it isn't about making NYCW a global company, but the challenge of keeping it how Stomper and now Larry want things. The hirings might not always be big, stellar names. The booking might now always favor the better workers as well. This is a place where people like has beens like Ford Gumble can thrive and a bland guy like Rayne Man can exist. It is a style of thought that pretty much says 'Hey, these guys were on television once. People will come to see them' even if there are good reasons in most cases why they aren't on television these days.

I suppose I am rambling a bit at this point! I will have the show up probably sometime this weekend. I already have most of it finished so it might even be Friday if I get time to put the finishing touches on things.

The New York Doll is raring to go and he tries to get the jump on Steve. The veteran is expecting it though and easily takes control. The Masked Mauler © vs Sammy the Shark

Sammy manages good flurries of offense that keep Mauler on his toes, but the veteran seems to also be shrugging most of it off. He easily overpowers Sammy more often than not and controls the pace of the match. Sammy makes one more good attempt at a comeback and manages a series of moves that lay out The Masked Mauler. He takes too much time going up top combined with Mauler apparently playing possum. Mauler grabs Sammy from behind by the waist and German suplexes him off the top rope. Sammy doesn't move and the Mauler himself is dazed for a moment, but is aware enough to move over and get the pin.

Rock Downpour: Sammy wanted gold again, but came up short. The Masked Mauler is powerful, but he can be sneaky at times.

Ernie Turner: Crafty and powerful. This is the kind of talent Sweet and Southern Ernie Turner can get behind.

Rock Downpour: I seem to remember a masked man that can be crafty at times too. No so powerful, but I hear he was an assassin.

Ernie Turner: I have no idea who you could be talking to. Have another donut.

Outside The Ministry in the back lot stands Honest Frank with cigarette in hand and in his usual brown suit. He has a smirk on his face and a swagger to his step as he idly walks about and talks.

Honest Frank: Roger Cage is a man that has held the New York City Wrestling Empire title for quite a long time. Everyone talks as if he is the best champion this company has ever seen. I don't believe that one bit. All this time he has held the title he has dodged one man. That man is me. *Smirk* We faced once since you have gotten that title and it seems a bit strange to me the one time we faced off it was a tag match and the title was on the line. Remember who pinned you, Roger? Maybe tonight I will just give you a friendly reminder. Tonight I show you are a coward and a weak champ, but don't be mad about what I have to say, Roger.

Frank just smiles and takes one long drag off his cigarette then slowly exhales. He then flicks the remains at the camera and gives a wink.

Honest Frank: I'm just being honest.

Whistler plays to the fans, but Griffith doesn't seem to be in a joking mode. He ends up jumping Whistler and going on the attack for a bit on the outside. He finally rolls the elder wrestler in the ring and the bell sounds. Griffith keeps control for quite some time, but then the fans start to chant for Whistler and it seems to give him extra strength. Whistler goes on the offensive and uses several big shoulder blocks and elbows to rock Griffith. The surge of energy doesn't seem to be enough to allow Whistler to put Griffith away and he obviously starts to look like he is wearing down. Jack takes this time to capitalize on his opponent getting tired rolls up Whistler by surprise. He uses a handful of tights to help secure his win as well.

???: Ladies and gentlemen of the wrestling world. May I have your attention? I am Isabella Encanta and I have brought with me today the two men that will be your new New York City Wrestling tag team champions! I hear you are stuck with a dumb hillbilly and a blues singer wannabe as your current ones so I am sure you don't mind if we come and take their titles away. The champs try their best, but both Steel and Brody do well at throwing their weight around and showing off their power. Tennessee Williams does his best to try and use his speed as an advantage, but a stiff big boot pretty much takes him out of the match and leaves Animal Harker to fight off both men. It is a valiant effort and the crowd is behind him, but Brody manages to nail him with a big boot as well and he passes him off to Steel who hefts Harker up and delivers a powerbomb. Williams is still out cold on the outside as Michael Bull counts to three.

Rick Sanders uses every trick in the book he has learned over the years to keep himself at some sort of advantage. Brandon Smith is just too young and too powerful to keep down for long. The big man starts to get some momentum and he starts to toss Rick around the ring with ease. Even attempts to cheap shot Smith to slow him down do little to by Rick Sanders a breather. Eventually Brandon has full control and he tosses Rick into the corner hard. Rick hits the corner and staggers forward to be almost broken in half by a powerful spear by Brandon Smith. Sanders certainly does not get up after that.

Ford Gumble and Rayne Man vs Money and Muscle

The veterans actually find themselves in trouble early on. Monty Trescarde and Andrew Harper work like a well oiled machine from the start and keep Gumble away from his partner. Monty controls the match, but whenever Gumble starts to fight back Harper gets tagged in to administer another brutal beatdown. It is a tactic that works well until a simple case of bad timing sees Gumble get free and make a tag to Rayne Man. Rayne starts to roll, but a big forearm from Harper staggers him. Harper lifts up Rayne, but he slips free and then ducks Trescarde who runs into his own partner. The confusion allows Gumble to recover enough and take Trescarde out as both men tumble out of the ring. Harper turns about to find Rayne man who lays into Harper. Rayne manages to take Harper down then gets the big man up to hit a jumping piledriver. Trescarde ends up too late to break up the pin.

Ernie Turner: But they lost. What good is team work if you lose, Rock?

Rock Downpour: I would try to explain, but I don't think we have enough time for that.

Roger Cage comes to the ring and has some fun with the fans his entire way there. He eventually gets himself a microphone and gets in the ring. As the cheering dies down he pulls off his shades and he tosses them into the crowd.

Roger Cage: Here we are in 2013 and I must say it feels like it will be a good year for me. Last year was amazing and I have to admit it will be hard to top, but I will strive to do so. Honest Frank thinks I am a coward and that I am dodging him, but the case is he obviously didn't impress enough before to get a title shot. I have never backed down from any challenge and it just sounds like sour grapes to me. Frank, you can be honest all you want. I'll just be the champ.

Cage comes out swinging and the champ dominates early to the point Honest Frank often is slipping out of the ring or outright pulling Michael Bull between himself and the champ to get a moment to rethink his strategy. His antics pay off and he manages to catch Cage when he is trying to get out of the ring to go after the challenger. Frank looks to be going all out to put Cage away. Several big moves and pinfalls are attempted, but Cage always seems to slip out right before Frank can manage to hear that hand to slap down a third time. The frustration builds and that is just what Roger Cage needs to allow him to make a comeback. The crowd goes wild as the champ starts to gain momentum. Frank almost seems helpless to stop the barrage and he gets caught before he can escape to the outside of the ring. Cage Lock is applied! Frank fights, but can't stand the pain as his body is twisted by the submission hold and he is forced to give up.

Feeling pleased about the results I saw. Got some positive chem notes for tag teams that I wasn't expecting and most gimmicks scored well for the new guys. Tag match disappointed, but the lack of any great ring worker there will lead to a match grade like that! Match of the night goes to Cage and Frank which slightly nudged Brandon Smith vs Rick Sanders.

Fans who attended Rush Hour were in for a big surprise that they would have never expected once the show was done. After the main event a tired Roger Cage got on the microphone to make a stunning announcement that he had wrestled his last match for New York City Wrestling and has signed with Supreme Wrestling Federation.

The teary eyed Cage talked at length about his love for NYCW and he is proud of all he accomplished. He told the fans that it isn't farewell forever, but it was time for him to move on and face new challenges. He then thanked several members including ex-owner The Stomper as well as several other people from the company before kissing the title and handing it to Michael Bull. Several members from the roster including the likes of Sammy the Shark, Steve Flash, and Black Hat Bailey all came out and gave Roger a farewell hug as well and overall it came off as a classy farewell.

It is obvious Cage is leaving the company on good terms given the fact they let him retain the title before handing it over to the current booker. It is unknown how long he will be with SWF, but it seems he will always have a home at New York City wrestling if things do not work out for him. It is speculated that the Empire championship will be up for grabs at Standing Room Only, but for now the names that might get a chance to win the title are unknown.

It seems it has been decided on who the next Empire champion of NYCW will be when Steve Flash and Jack Griffith meet in the main event at Standing Room Only. Flash is a former three time Empire champion already and was the last man to hold the title before Roger Cage began his impressive reign that finally came to an end when he left for SWF. The forty-seven year old veteran is still in great shape and could easily become a four time champion when all is said and done.

On the other side we get a newcomer to the company in Jack Griffith. Southern Justice has had his share of ups and downs in his career and for the first time since 2007 he finds himself with regular employment. He is no stranger to holding gold himself as he was one of the top stars for the defunct SCCW promotion where he was their top champion twice as well as a tag team champion. In only his second match with NYCW can Southern Justice find himself with the company's top prize?

http://i.imgur.com/o7hJ4dF.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/8LE7ito.jpg

Both of the newly crowned NYCW tag team champions were tabbed by SWF to be future stars. Steel was a talent with a great look but never developed in the way SWF had hoped. The man's career seemed to be over a year later when he was busted for steroids and was blackballed by many promotions. Michael Bull may have just given Steel his last chance at being a wrestler at this point when he was hired. Michael believes Steel is a good person and just needs to overcome his problems and remain clean with steroids. The fact he is already a tag team champion shows Bull has faith in the young talent and wants to see him succeed. Steel says the past is behind him and he is intent to show Michael Bull that he didn't make a mistake by giving him a chance.

A new signing has been announced by Michael Bull recently as it looks like the latest talent coming to NYCW will be the young worker Remmy Honeyman. With the departure of Roger Cage it is said the purses were loosened a tiny bit and it allowed for another talent to be brought in. Feeling enough veterans were brought in to freshen up the roster Michael Bull has instead opted to bring in another young talent that could be a NYCW lifer. For now it seems he will be teamed with fellow newcomer Quentin Queen and the pair will go by the name Blue Collar Boys while being managed by Dharma Gregg.

NYCW Standing Room Only

NYCW Empire Championship

Jack Griffith vs Steve Flash

Flash will give better ratings but Griffith will allow for better storylines. I see Flash winning as this will probably be his last run before starting to decline bad and you'd want to make the most of it.

NYCW Tri-State Region Championship

Masked Mauler © vs Rayne Man

Does Rayne Man even have a gimmick?

NYCW Tag Team Championship

Power Players © vs Blue Collar Boys

Steel was tailor made for NYCW. Looking forward to their greatness.

Also On the Card

Honest Frank vs Ford Gumble

Frank has the charisma.

The Ring Generals vs Money and Muscle

Trescarde has the coolest gimmick in the game (Gordon Gekko) but TRG is the smoothest tag team in the game.

Bulldozer Brandon Smith vs Black Hat Bailey

Are you serious? Who do you think is going to win?

The New York Doll vs Sammy the Shark

Losing streak story with Doll? Just remember to watch his recent fortunes. Maybe give him some dark match wins over jobbers.

Whistler vs Rick Sanders

I personally always give Whistler one last run at the belt... which he always loses because come one, the guy is like 50.
