Yes, the ultimate picture I would have would be sorta like a GM version of Franchise Hockey Manager, minus the head-scratching interface and bugs. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Or make a decent TV-channel programming. I don't actually watch TV, but I'm interested in playing that game. <img alt="" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/rolleyes.png.4b097f4fbbe99ce5bcd5efbc1b773ed6.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

I do love sports management games, just not those, though I'd embrace the idea of horse racing if you actually had control over the horse's training program. I've been toying with some Olympics simulator where you play a country and finance/scout for talent, but the way I see it, that would be a little too complex.

I wouldn't mind something in the vein of Risk. I know there are a tonne of games out there like it, but they never get old to me. Iif it had the capacity for us to make our own scenario's and maps, etc. then that could be a great addition to the GDS community.

I wouldn't go for Hockey. OOTP do have that already, and even though its still a buggy mess, you'd have to compete with it. Football would always be compared to Football Manager.. I think a niche game would be better

Its been posted often in the Future Games Forum, but a TV producing game would certainly be interesting..

I know that 4 years ago (has it been that long) I wrote a massive post on how to utlise the TEW engine which I've searched for and dug out

I know this has kinda come and gone but since its been rumbling around in my head for the last 3 hours with no where to write it down and i've had to remember it so the least i can do is put it up.

Using the TEW engine, i think the potential is there to make a game involving the TV industry

The Premise

You start the game as an unemployed writer looking for work in a production company with real world examples being Mutant Enemy (Joss Whedons), Ten Thirteen Productions (Chris Carters), SyCo (Simon Cowells). Once hired, its your job to create & write shows, pitch them to networks, hire cast and crew and keep them happy whilst dealing with rival shows, prima donna actors and that all important cliffhanger that ensures your show gets renewed.

Beginnings:

Once your hired, you have to come up with a commodity to sell to the networks. Each production company has its own type of shows it likes to put on. For example, Joss Whedons projects always seem to steer towards sci-fi/fantasy elements while projecting women as kickass (Buffy, Echo, Inara), while Chris Carters have involved conspiracies. This would be similar to TEW's promotion settings where the owner will get onto you if you stray. Once your show is envisioned you take it to the networks where you would negotiate the budget and amount of episodes to be aired and how many minutes the show is (That's if they want it)

Getting Your Show Going:

Once you have a show greenlit, you would then start arranging your cast, crew and location. the cast are essentially TEW's wrestlers who will be performing on screen while your Road Agents, trainers, managers etc would be your directors, producers and special effects crew with their overall abilities effecting how good your show turns out. You would also decide where to shoot the show. Do you CrossRoads it with a flimsy set that could fall down at any moment or do you fly them out to Hawaii like in Lost. More importantly, do you have the budget to do so. This would equate almost to TEW's venue however you decide it at the start of the series and cannot change without incurring huge relocation fees.

You could also add in PPA contracts for Special Guest Stars

Showtime:

So you have your space on a channel but no show. Its time to get that shot. This would be almost like booking a show in TEW with no matches. Your angles would be the key scenes you want in the episode arranged in the order that you want them to be seen in, however you would be allowed to allocate a time period for special effects/locations shoots which could cost more or less depending on who you hired. Once booked, it would air that evening with a comment on how well it was received. Each networks would have loose criteria that effects the shows ratings (ie SyFy ratings increase during special effects and action pieces but could decrease if you dont have much going on)

Once shown on screen, you would gain/loss popularity depending on its rating, and your actors will also gain popularity depending on screentime and scene ratings.

Characters:

Your actors alter ego. Why did Sliders go down the toilet in Season 5. Because the character Quinn Mallory was gone and replaced by Mallory, played by a new actor. This could be represented by each actors character being able to gain popularity and name value. Another example is Claire Bennett in Heroes. Has done nothing really of value since Season 1 (in my opinion) but kept due to sex appeal (apparently? I cant really see it since i saw her in Ally McBeal)You have an actor in some great scenes at the start on a popular show and that character could become the star.

Characters having their own pseudo-profile would also allow you to refer to them in episodes if the character leaves the show (example in the real life section)

But having a star has its drawbacks. Other companies are gonna want them and soon you will be competing to keep them on the show, while the other actors will start wanting more and having to balance your budget. Is it worth keeping them on the show (helping your popularity but killing your finance) or dropping them in spectacular TV fashion (losing a popular character but balancing the books).

Or maybe your hoping that your ratings are high enough that you can get a bigger budget next season to find out that it was all just a dream however you would have to pull off one hell of an opening scene to not kill the popularity of that character.

Passage Of Time:

Its pretty obvious straight away that the standard 12 month calender wouldn't work as your show would only be on for less than half a year with a lot of clicking in between. The answer would be a variation used in TV Scheduling of Seasons (ie Fall, Sweeps etc) with each season having particular pros and cons. For instance Fall programming could have higher ratings due to colder nights keeping people in making it the ideal time to premiere shows, while you might have more chance getting a show on the air during the summer with lower ratings. Each season would be around 11 weeks long with 11 shows being the desired TV season length.

Real Life:

Like Charlie Sheen in December and Kiefer Sutherland in 2007, actors can get into trouble and this could effect the popularity of your show. Imagine if you were running a show on a Disney like channel and your 15 year old star got herself caught with drugs. Her popularity could plummet and you could find your show cancelled or without its star. What if you caught them drinking on set before you filmed and realise they have an addiction. Can you afford them time in rehab. Or in the case of John Ritter, do you end the show if the actor dies or carry on without them (Linking into the characters seperate popularity to reference them in episodes instead of having the actor there)

Cliffhanger:

What better way to end any show, but with your traditional cliffhanger. Used as a way to make sure fans are back for the next season, Cliffhangers would carry over to the first episode of the next season allowing a boost to ratings but depending on the network your on, the reaction to it could help or hinder.

Using Fox as an example, they would expect their prime time action show (ie 24) to end in a big bang and the fans would too especially if you still had some seasons left. If it fell flat the final rating would plummet massively as the fans reacted badly. They would also not be anxiously awaiting the new series and its inital rating would be lower.

On the other hand, if you were on a more restrained network and end in a big hurrah, the fans would be shocked and put off. They would be expecting a slow finish with lots of crying and hugging (yeah im looking at you Dr Who)

Post Show:

What do you do when you show ends.. You create another. You don't even have to wait until the end before you start crafting another, but your gonna have more actors throwing their toys out their prams.

So what if the network didn't get your vision and cancelled it.. Maybe it will gain a cult following on DVD and you can bring it back... heck maybe even a film..

I was pondering a TV game the other day. Not necessarily with the TEW engine, but playing around with a random number generator, and seeing where the game-y elements would be. The idea of being at the mercy of the networks, trying to please them enough to stay on the air, while they compete with each other for ratings... I dig it. Reading about all of these new pilots being shot in real life, it's intriguing to me which are being picked up and why.

Music industry, I dunno - I've been in bands for 15-16 years and think this wouldn't really translate well into gaming because simply put, it'd be a LOT of rinse and repeat without much stuff to do overall. Organize tours, advertise for albums, hire recording studios - there was a game like this all the way back on C64 (called Rockstar ate my hamster ^^) and while it contained quite some hilarity it got old REALLY fast.

And I agree on what was said here before, soccer (well lets call it football ^^) management is covered by Sports Interactive's Football Manager series. Even EA realized that and (finally) ended the Fifa manager series (cause FM is just so much better anyways).

So it'd be hockey or racing sim for me, but since I'm just that little more into racing than into hockey I gave racing the nod. Lots of strategies involved - I actually just got Pro Cycling Manager 2013 for dirt cheap on some sale and while that isn't something I would ever watch on TV (and no, doping is NOT an option in the game <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />), the game itself is fairly in-depth and strategic. So racing it is - but with cars please ^^. We haven't had a racing management game worth a damn since the late 90s...

My vote was horse racing. I've played a lot of them over the years and while there have been some pretty good ones, I don't see where there's been as one with the depth and strength of a Grey Dog title. Something's always suffered. In some you managed the stable but couldn't breed. In others jockey management suffered. Or if you got to play around with bloodstock, the races they went into afterward stunk. If someone at Grey Dog could do this to the standards a Grey Dog game is known for, you couldn't take my money for it fast enough.

No one liked this one?
http://www.myrtilusentertainment.com/showtime.html

Yes, it is up to its 14th patch now (egads! mostly for bugs as far as I can see) but it seems to cover this ground decently?

That's not the problem at all, Brother Derek. There's been some decent chatter here about Showtime and I've intended to give it a look myself. It's more that people think about a game that plays like Hollywood Mogul with a scriptwriting system like the storylines in TEW and visions of virtual Oscars dance in their heads. Which I must say I share at times. Although for my movies that are nothing like I'd ever watch in reality, I tend to be happy that Hollywood Mogul is satisfied with fictionalizing the scripts. I wouldn't be as hep to piece together the scenes for an award baiting gimmick drama as I would for an animated movie. So I. not as crazy about the movie idea as some are. But again, if someone at Grey Dog could make a game in this genre worthy of the company's name, I'd likely it give it a shot. Especially if it could avoid playing like an encyclopedia the way Hollywood Mogul can be if you try to utilize all the little wrinkles like DVD extras and soundtrack arrangement.
