The Kevin Owens Effect

Recommended Posts

I had that situation with CM Punk in my old 1996-2004 game. CM Punk was reaching the 90s in popularity while just tagging in the midcard on Smackdown with Colt Cabana.

I had no real plans for him to get that big in just 2003, I still threw him some decent storylines as a reward though. Also he got an IC title run.

In an old 1987 JCP game, he was the man. He could carry anyone to a great match. There was no holding him back. He was unquestionably the future of the NWA, and the next great NWA World Heavyweight Champion.

That man, was Hector Guerrero.

Although I imagine it's the same when managing a restaurant where you have to worry about the best workers leaving for a lower stress and higher paying job.

He bores the life out of me, and actually drove me to stop watching WWE live for a few years back during his "destiny" phase. I couldnt stand him then and he's even worse now. So I think I couldnt think of something for him, because I just dont like Del Rio. He's part of a group with Sheamus, Reigns, Ryback and Barrett that I've just seen too much of, to even care about booking them correctly in TEW. It's petty but when I hate seeing wrestlers in real life, I dont even want to use them in a game

Can certainly relate to that. I used to be the same way about Kid Kash back in the days when he was the Internet darling. I just got so sick of him I didn't want him anywhere near any of my games and nothing could change that. Not even the fact he's from the same area where my parents grew up.

I don't know I could book reDragon very well in a current real world mod very well either. I've been tired of them since about two minutes after they came together. I've never liked Bobby Fish and the only time I found Kyle O'Reilly interesting as a character was when he was beefing with Davey Richards. As soon as that feud went tag team, any desire I might have had to see or book Kyle O'Reilly died. So while I can see how having those blocks could hurt your game, I also understand playing to them. You're playing the game to have fun. If Del Rio or Kash or reDragon or whomever is antithetical to that, you cast them aside and deal with the consequences so you can fulfill the purpose of your game. Your entertainment.

I've never put a world title on him but I've used him as a transitional US and TV champion in nearly every 80s game I've played because he can have a good match with almost anyone.

I've been reading through this thread and noticing people saying that they understand not booking guys you don't like and that you should book your company to make it fun for you.

Just picturing Mcmahon in his office complaining "they want Daniel Bryan. I don't find that very fun"

I often have a harder time with people that I actually like than people that I dislike...

John Cena I always book to stay stronger, he's always on the Franchise Players list, etc. I'm not a huge fan of his, but I appreciate what he brings to the table in terms of segment ratings.

For instance, in my current game, it's 2016, he's apparently not hurt in the data for January start date except for "temporary soul separation" and is back in 21 days.... just in time for the Rumble... I signed Kurt Angle for one last hurrah, had him return at the Rumble as one of the surprises and the story I came up with was that Cena came up behind Show & Kane, who were trying to eliminate each other, dumped them out of the ring and just as he did so, the countdown clock struck zero, the trumpets blared and out came YOUR Olympic Gold Medalist, making a bee line to the ring, ready to kick some arse and immediately goes after Cena with a takedown attempt, Show pulls down the top rope and they're both eliminated... Sets up Fastlane triangle match, which in turn sets up one of the main events of Mania (Angle vs Cena) and 2 weeks before Mania, Daniel Bryan is set to return, we have a special referee and we slowly set up THE Main Event for Mania next year, Kurt Angle vs Daniel Bryan: Iron Man Match...

Then there's Roman Reigns, who I've kept going down the same path, only he's eventually going to turn heel with the Usos, when Samoa Joe makes his way to the main roster and we're going to have a Samoan Kingdom (Where Reigns declares himself King Apelu and rechristens the Usos as Mose and Noa, while Joe becomes Kiliona.....

In each of these scenarios, I have 3 people that I rather enjoy... Angle, Bryan, Joe.... But in the end, they all get over, I just have a tougher time directing the three that I enjoy, while the others gain massive amounts of everything....

I'm so conflicted...

Phil Apollo, has mostly been a jobguy for three years, with a record of 9 and 88 (those 9 wins being tag matches, often dark matches or in the Regional days when I didn't have anyone), manages to be a Midcarder, he's on tv regularly, but he's almost always teaming with Jeff Gaylord, who remains at Opener popularity. Lacking charisma, but turning out to be a decent performer, so I guess just learning from the guys he's putting over. I don't know what to do with him, he's my favorite jobber now, but he could probably be an upper midcard guy if I let him, and sometimes I want to release him just to see how far he can go elsewhere in the world.

They had a solid feud in Papa Savoldi's ICW in reality and Joe would bring the charisma that Apollo doesn't. Maybe have them argue on screen a lot and see if Joe's personality skills would rub off on Phil or not.
