The NJPW Discussion Thread

I'm navigating the site and it seems there is only a handful of shows with English Commentary....I don't think this would be a good investment for me because I would blow through what content they had in under a month. If I knew Japanese this would be a great deal but at this time I'm going to have to find different alternatives.

<p>NJ Cup night 1 was a very good show. Kushida/Shibata vs Okada/Sakuraba, Ishii/EVIL, and Naito/Yoshi were all great. Also enjoyed Nagata vs Goto but I'm arguably the biggest fan of old man Nagata. The tag match especially felt really fresh and had some great pace to it. Main event was ok but it was a Fale match and a Tanahashi main event, you can see it play out in advance.</p><p> </p><p>

Next round is tomorrow with the semi and finals a week from Saturday. Ishii/Naito main event should be fantastic.</p>

<p>Solid night. YOSHI/Naito surprised me by how good it was. Pretty excited to see YOSHI toss up with more heavyweights. Shibata being signed to a full deal is really exciting too. Really hope that means he'll transition to one of the top belts by the end of the year.</p><p> </p><p>

Also, is Sakuraba a heavyweight or jr. heavyweight? It seems like he's a heavyweight, but I feel like he alternates all the time.</p>

<p>I liked that show quite a bit. Hopefully Yoshi gets a bit of a push after this, because he and Naito stole the show.</p><p> </p><p>

It was refreshing to see an NJPW show without 15 different guys interfering. I still think it looks dumb when Watanabe does his convoluted thing with the chairs right in front of the referee, but baby steps I guess.</p>

You don't listen to it until they scream a word you understand. You completely tune out and just get immersed in the actual wrestling that's going on. Then there's a lariat, the crowd explode and you've got a Japanese man screaming LARIATOOOOO! and it's awesome! LOVE the Japanese commentary and have/will always pick it over English comms.</p>

I've always found English speaking commentators waffle on needlessly. I might not understand the Japanese commentators but they never seem to fill shows with pointless drivel or useless diatribes (Looking directly at you Matt "KENNY OMEGA SWERVED NEW JAPAN" Striker ¬_¬)</p>

Kevin Kelly is actively my largest problem with watching ROH and Striker isn't bad as much as he is irritating, but they really aren't fit to call NJPW. I feel like they worked a lot better on the dash show where there wasn't emphasis on big matches and long term stories concluding. They were just fine with basic explanations, but anything else is really not their strong point.

Like, I love Jay Lethal, but don't try and sell me on him being the best in the world in the middle of Wrestle Kingdom, where he's probably the least over guy on the card (among the Japanese audience in the Tokyo Dome, I mean).</p><p> </p><p> I understand where K-Nection is coming from, and it was a similar road block for me a few years ago when I first started to avidly follow the product. I struggled at first without the English commentary, and when I was first getting into it I would pause in between matches so I could look the show up and identify who was who. I don't know if K-Nection is still reading this, but if he is I would say that watching select matches on Dailymotion isn't the best way to try and introduce yourself to NJPW. What I did was pick a jumping in point (2012 WK, so basically right when Okada came back to Japan) and start watching full shows from there. Like I said, it took me a bit to figure out who was who and get a feel for everyone's character, but I've long since been at a point where I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not being able to understand the commentary. It helps that NJPW is so wrestling-centric, and what storylines do exist are generally pretty simple and easy to understand (and half of the promos wind up being done in English anyway, thanks to the Bullet Club.)</p><p> </p><p> I will say that Mauro and Josh were really good on AXS though. Hopefully JR has taken the time to familiarize himself with the product to a greater degree than he did before last year's WK, otherwise the commentary is going to take a hit without Mauro.</p>

I really dislike both of them if I'm being brutally honest. Kelly just isn't very good at play-by-play and Striker has this incredibly annoying tendency to talk like he's trying to remind the fans that he knows it's a work (like at WK10 where he said "There wont be any thigh-slapping in this one" before Ishii vs Shibata. Like, come on Striker. Help my immersion, don't try to break it).

I've watched several matches with the Japanese commentary it's just not my thing. I can't get into it because I can't understand the story they are trying to tell. Now if I ever got to go see a NJPW show live I would be there in a heart beat because the action in the ring looks great (most of the time) but commentary I can follow is one of the immersion things I can't live without.

<p>So what is everything thinking now that we're down to the final four of the New Japan Cup? My initial thought (or make that fear) was that we were heading for another Goto win and inevitable failed title shot, but apparently during his promo Naito said that when he wins the tournament he's not going to use it next month. That makes me think he'll win and hold off on his title match until Dominion.</p><p> </p><p>

I'd be on board with Elgin winning too, and I probably wouldn't stop smiling all day if Yano won, though that's not happening. Just, please...not Goto. Please.</p>

<p>Kenny Omega was pulled from ROH's 3/12 show. So it's safe to assume he'll be involved in an angle at the NJC Finals for his next IC opponent?</p><p> </p><p>

Also banking on Naito to win. Actually banking on LITERALLY ANYONE, but Goto to win.</p>

I'm not sure whose idea it was to have Naito dress like John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever, but I would like to shake their hand.</p>

Naito vs. Yano was so much fun. Even though I knew there was no way Yano was going to the finals, I bought into every near fall.

I enjoyed Naito vs. Goto too, a lot better than Goto's main event with Okada last month. But most importantly the right guy won. From the sound of things, Naito will be challenging for the title at Invasion Attack but won't actually be using his NJ Cup title shot to do it. So I would guess that Okada retains next month, but Naito uses the loophole to get a rematch and win the title at Dominion.

Does the handshake mean that Goto is part of CHAOS now? Because if so...meh.

  • 4 weeks later...

Watching the Road To Invasion Attack show from Friday.

Not sure what it is about them, but I really enjoyed the two young lions in the opening match. Teruaki Kanemitsu and Hirai Kawato are both pretty green obviously, but their chain wrestling was fun to watch. It'll be fun watching them grow as performers and get their own identities. I don't watch many young lion matches, is it standard for neither worker to outshine the other? Both guys got about the same amount of offense in.

Also, I am insanely excited to see Tangoroa(Camacho/Micah) in New Japan. Him and Tama should make for a good tag team.
