WCW 97' - The Road to Global Domination Hype

Introduction

It is December 1997, a month after the infamous “Montreal Screwjob” that occurred in Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Federation. After the incidence, World Championship Wrestling acquired WWF Superstar, Bret "The Hitmen" Hart, who now had a ton of momentum after the infamous moment. WCW are riding high off their consecutive weeks of beating the WWF in ratings supremacy and now they stole another one of their established big stars. As far back as one can remember, WCW has always been the #2 promotion in the states, only to be on WWF’s trail in the recent years. That all seemed to change in 1997 and WCW isn't stopping their supremacy going into 1998, as they are now only 4 weeks away from their biggest event of the year, Starcade. If all goes well, it could be a pivotal moment on whether WCW can put the final nail in the coffin for Vince McMahon’s promotion. WCW haven’t yet had Bret Hart debut and yet they have one of the biggest storylines going into Starcade, which is Sting versus “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan, a feud that has been going on for a whole year. Considering WCW has a stacked roster, a huge show on the horizon and haven’t yet had Bret Hart debut, many believe that it is only a matter of time before World Championship Wrestling becomes the new premiere professional wrestling company in the world.

I'm back everyone! After taking about a month or two off to get over the loss of my 1st and longest dynasty, I have finally found the will of fire again. I'll admit, I haven't been on here for awhile but I have been keeping tabs on a few dynasties. I'm hoping to get back into the swing of things and seeing how everyone has been doing, before I adventure out on this new project.

I expected that it would be awhile before I found the motive to do a new dynasty but as I began to think about all of the possibilities that WCW had going into 1998, I felt I just had to give it a shot. I'm hoping to make this one my best dynasty to date, I already have several shows made up and it seems great so far. Anyways, enough rambling on, much more to be revealed in due time!

Pardon the double post, but I took the time to read the WIRE dynasty and also discovered the "Mothers of the Revolution" one (thanks for introducing me to EVE) so I can't help but wonder, how do people organize and run such multiplayer games?

The participants listed all create their own shows, handle their own rosters, events, etc... However, the main file is ran by me. We don't "pass" the file around as that seems to be a big friction point in past multiplayer games. By keeping it to one person, we don't risk someone dropping out and ruining the file for all. Hopefully, if successful, it can provide a template of how multiplayer games can work consistently. - We communicate via Slack. I post up shows, the latest file, graphics, etc... all in the Slack channel. This way, if I get hit by a bus, the file can keep rolling - Every company was able to sign 5 workers at game start, and will be able to sign 1 worker per month going forward (details below) - Each company also has a "waiver" list of 20 workers currently on written contracts with other companies. This list is not shared with others. The idea behind this is that it prevents people from "hoarding" workers - The only "pre-game" editing done is the creation of the alliance and signing of any PGHW worker on a touring contract to a written deal Signings Initial 1) 5 workers will be signed to written contracts 2) Send 8 workers in your list, ordered in most important to least important 3) If more than 1 person has the same worker, the highest ranking will be given priority - Ex. If 2 people have same guy on list, but one ranked #1 and another ranked #3, the company who ranked themat #1 will be given priority 4) You can sign any type of worker (staff, wrestler, etc...) 5) The worker must be unemployed or on a PPA deal and available in your region 6) If the worker is loyal to another company, they will be signed on a PPA deal instead of a written contract - If 2 or more people have a person rated the same, we will do a random roll to decide 7) Once the 5 workers for each company are determined, send me contract details (sans $, I will make sure you get worker on money) and length (up to 3 years) Future Months 1) You can sign 1 worker every month 2) Order of signings will be determined by highest rated show in previous month - If 2 people have the same “Max” show rating, the average of their shows in the previous month will be used as a tiebreaker - If both Max and average shows are the same, we will use the ratings from 2 months ago - If all of the above are the same, we will do a random roll to decide “Flex” Signing 1) Every 4 month period you also have 1 “flex” signing that can be used on: - An existing tag team out of your company (see example 1 below) - A worker who is part of an existing tag team with someone already in your company (See example 2 below) - A worker whose written contract comes up in another company (see “Waivers” section) >>> Ex. 1) You could bring in the Ring Generals as a team in the same month >>> Ex. 2) Say you are PGHW, they could use their extra signing on KAZ since he is in an existing tag team with Eien Miyamoto. You could then use your other pick that month 2) The 4 month periods for this Dynasty will be: - Feb-May - Jun-Sep - Oct-Jan Waivers 1) After worker signings are complete, we will each have a "blind" waiver list of 20 workers who are currently on written deals with other companies (available in your area) 2) If a worker's contract comes up, the person with them rated higher on the waiver list will be given priority for the next round of signings 3) Workers not on any waiver list who come up for contract renewal, will be offered to owners with highest show first 4) If you choose to invoke your waiver claim on a worker, it will use your following month’s signing slot or you can use your "flex" signing 5) If a worker is rated the same by 2 or more users, waiver priority will be determined by highest rated show in previous month “Bonus” signings 1) Each month after PPV’s, you will choose 3 people for your own company as signees 2) Whatever forum member wins the “pick ‘em” contest can choose a worker from 1 of the company lists to grant that company an extra signing for that month 3) Other bonuses will take place throughout the year</div></blockquote>

My question was more about how A) it goes from one person's idea to the execution, since they just seem to pop up without anyone having tossed the idea and looked for co-players on some thread like this one and B) how you handle the save file. I understand passing the file around via mail/dropbox/whatever has been problematic and TeamViewer is only good for 2 player games. You seem to have found a way around it, but I still got some minor questions about how you handle some things. Feel free to answer here and I'll PM you with any further questions so we don't hijack this thread.

Sure.

A) For WIRE I just pm’ed people I’d had good interactions with on the site, usually through Uncrewed’s drafts in the mods section, a general idea of the direction I’d like to try to take a MP game. For MotR, kind of the same thing. From there, I invited everyone to a Slack workspace (its a messaging platform) and we kind of workshopped the ground rules from there.

B) I run the file. So the other guys will post what they want to do on the show and then I will input and run it. Slack allows you to post screenshots easily so I just post up each screen of the show as it’s run. You can also post files directly, so after a week of shows I’ll post up the save file in our slack channel so guys can dive in if they want to.

The promoter, Gus Parsons, had posted about his ring being taken and in independent wrestling a lot of people are rightly suspicious anytime they hear of trouble. Still there were five days till the show and I didn’t think a lot of it. The days went by and more and more people started reaching out, saying they hadn’t heard anything from the promotion. That there was money owed. By Thursday morning it was clear that the show would likely be canceled. It is unfortunate, but FCW has canceled shows in the past. Then Friday night Gus Parsons announced on Facebook that FCW was done, he was getting out of wrestling. A hole was created in the San Diego wrestling scene. Looking back at the legacy of FCW, I think as of right now it will go down as the best promotion in San Diego’s history, at least in terms of match quality. FCW brought in talent that was unequaled in the area. Sure, other promotions would book a bigger name or bring in highly touted wrestlers from outside the area for a match or two, but FCW would try to book strong cards from top to bottom. In talking with Gus I always got the feeling that his goal was to put on the best wrestling show that he could. Maybe that was his downfall? Maybe adding Penta El Zero M and Rey Fenix to a match that already had Rey Mysterio Jr, Jeff Cobb, Bestia 666, etc. didn’t make financial sense, but that was one of the reason Gus was so popular among fans. People knew he was a fan at heart and wanted to have the best matches possible. I was talking to someone after this past Saturday’s SoCal Pro show about FCW’s demise. They mentioned how they’ll miss FCW because while they enjoy the other local San Diego promotions every FCW show created a memory. Whether it was a crazy four-way match with Eli Everfly and Danny Limelight jumping off basketball hoops, Joey Ryan proposing to Laura James in the ring, Douglas James and B-Boy going 45 minutes in a war, or any of the other great moments in the promotion’s history, he was right. FCW created moments in San Diego’s wrestling history that will be talked about for a long time. That’s a pretty good legacy for the promotion to have. In a few months most people will have forgotten how the promotion ended, but those great shows will still be thought about. Gus also has to be ranked in the top four San Diego area promoters of the last 25 years. While the ending was bad, ultimately it was a pretty good run. Sure it’s possible Gus sleeps on it a few nights and decides this isn’t the end, but the FCW we knew is gone. Too many people were burned and the fall was too public. Sure there are wrestlers who would take the booking. There are fans that would take the risk. But there are wrestlers and fans that wouldn’t, changing the promotion at its core. It is OK though. Most independent wrestling promotions die (aside from EWF, which I’m sure will be still going strong in 2717). When there is a hole something eventually fills it. Lead by B-Boy, things are already in motion to fill the void. Fifteen years ago this month EPIC collapsed in spectacular fashion. That directly lead to the formation of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. Who knows what the death of FCW brings. FCW is going to be missed, the future isn’t necessarily dark.</div></blockquote> <div style="text-align:center;">__________________________________________________</div> To understand what this meant, first I need to explain the history. Finest City Wrestling was THE promotion in San Diego. Sure, there was SoCal Pro and Baja Stars, but FCW set itself apart immediately. It wasn't just about matches, it was the atmosphere itself. You could tell everyone loved wrestling and genuinely wanted it to succeed. I had been to a few shows, quickly falling in love with the promotion like so many others had. So when I found out FCW had a training school, I began to save up to afford classes. I started in April, learning from a veritable SoCal legend in B-Boy. <div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="CRl3KGi.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/CRl3KGi.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> CZW, PWG, even Lucha Underground. He's been kicking ass for years and isn't slowing down.</div> After the 619 show in June, FCW took a small hiatus while the school continued. Training became more intense, but through it all I was sure that it would pay off once I made my debut. And then, the school closed once we couldn't rent out the building. Then FCW shut down a week later. Some students left. Claimed the situation was proof that wrestling wasn't for them. The ones that stayed ended up sitting around a table at Coach’s house, trying to make sense out of what was going on. You had Raff and Corey, guys who had been wrestling for a while and served as assistant trainers. KC and Hops, who had already made their debut back in April. Juan and Eddie, who were almost finished training. Tyler and Sean, who had just advanced to the advanced class. And me, the new guy. All of us unsure as to what was happening. We all struggled with the reality of our situation, wondering what was next. Internally been debating a spin off to the ROH diary (ROH 2018: Where Superstars Are Born), using the exact same environment/world but featuring Major League Wrestling which just debuted in my world in February 2019 (featuring the actual roster from August 2018). I really like what MLW is doing.

This wouldn't stop the ROH diary, that is and will remain the priority. Merely would be a separate spin-off. That featured the monthly MLW shows as a component to tie into the world...

Not sure it makes sense, but...

I thought about doing it that way in the past as well. My personal problem is, I hate going too far ahead because I often forget stuff I have written which would lead to continuity problems for me. Therefore, if I tried to write a diary like you are doing it made end up not making much sense (well it is not like my stuff made much sense in the first place but still). I would be interested in seeing if you would get more or less views than you typically do. [Following a fade to black from the previous show, the scene lights up to reveal an empty desk that almost looks like it is inside of a prison. A small window up in the corner allows light inside the room. Otherwise, the room is pretty dingy and dark. A cough sounds from behind the camera and then a voiceover begins to speak.]

[The Grand Avatar:] "Are we on? Yes? Hello and welcome to the Reverie network and this documentary focused on Reverie's own United States Pro Wrestling. We have arrived to January 2016 and a major change has been made within this company. We have learned that USPW owner, Allen Packer, has made this change in the background of the company. The new man that will be running the day to day activities of USPW is none other than Peter Michaels. We are proud to have Mr. Michaels joining us here today."

[After a few moments, Peter Michaels walks into view of the camera. He reaches out and pulls back a chair, a screech overtaking the silence as he does so. He sits down in the chair and looks up into the camera.]

[Peter Michaels:] "Thank you for having me here for this documentary. I hope that I can share some enlightening perspectives from my position in the company."

[The Grand Avatar:] "Thank you for being a part of this documentary, Mr. Michaels. As you know, each and every week, we will be bringing USPW American Wrestling to the television screen. This documentary will take place on Mondays and we will discuss the previous week of American Wrestling with Mr. Michaels and other members of the USPW locker room. We will discuss other events that have happened within the wrestling world, as well. To begin with, this evening, please tell our viewers a little bit about yourself and why you are here."

[Peter Michaels shifts slightly in his chair, moving to a more comfortable position.]

[Peter Michaels:] "My name is Peter Michaels. I am currently the executive vice president in charge of United States Pro Wrestling. Beginning this week, I will also be taking on the role of lead announcer on both American Wrestling and the events forthcoming this year. I am 55 years old and I have been in the wrestling business for 37 years. I began my career in the Texas Wrestling League where I was the lead announcer from October 1981 to February 1995 when the company closed it's doors. One month later, I received a job offer to become the lead announcer at Supreme Wrestling Federation, which I happily accepted. I worked my way up in that company to become the lead executive under Richard Eisen. In September 2015 I was released from the company and I began speaking with Allen Packer. I must have impressed Mr. Packer with my interview skills because I was given the job of Executive Vice President upon my arrival here to the company. I am grateful to Mr. Packer and I plan to keep up the standard of excellence that this company has been showing each and every week."

[The Grand Avatar:] "Thank you, Mr. Michaels. We will be right back after messages from our sponsors."

[Following a commercial break, we are taken back to the room where this documentary is taking place. The focus, once again, is on Peter Michaels with The Grand Avatar in the background running the camera.]

[The Grand Avatar:] "Welcome back, everyone. We are here with USPW Executive Vice President Peter Michaels. Mr. Michaels, now that you have taken over this company, what changes are we likely to see as we move forward?"

[Peter Michaels:] "As I stated earlier, the announce booth will be changing beginning this Wednesday night. I will be stepping in as the lead announcer along with Emily McQueen running color commentary. I will also be looking around the world for the best athletes to step in and be part of the top wrestling company in the business today. This will definitely be bringing some others into the company and it just might mean releasing some wrestlers who do not fit the product. I will, however, give each wrestler the opportunity to keep their job as we move forward. I will not simply be coming in and cleaning house. As an exclusive here first, I will give you the fact that our event schedule has been changed. In order to make things more cohesive, I made the decision to place almost every event on Sunday in the third week of the month. This will begin with Stars, Stripes And Slams this month. The two events that will take place on different days are Independence Day Slam, which has always taken place on July 4th and Thanksgiving Thunder which will take place the day before Thanksgiving. Other than that, people should expect to see the same great USPW wrestling action that they are accustomed to seeing each and every Wednesday."

[The Grand Avatar:] "As we wrap up, is there anything that you would like USPW wrestling fans to know?"

[Peter Michaels:] "I hope that they will continue to tune in as they have been doing. I consider this promotion to be the best wrestling promotion in the world today with it's mix of great wrestling, characters and family friendly entertainment. I would like to thank Allen Packer for giving me this opportunity and I will see everyone this Wednesday on the Reverie network for USPW American Wrestling."

[Peter Michaels stands up and offers a handshake to The Grand Avatar. A hand moves forward on camera, shaking the hand of Mr. Michaels. Peter Michaels turns to exit and The Grand Avatar speaks over the camera once again.]

[The Grand Avatar:] "Thank you for tuning in to the Reverie network today. We will be back next week with our talk of this week's wrestling action. Until then enjoy your day."

[The camera briefly follows Peter Michaels exiting the room and then we fade to black.]

So I'm trying to get back into my longest running game and thinking of starting by recapping my booking from 2016 - 2024. By recapping it monthly in the guise of Paul Heyman (user character and booker). Just a warm up I did a bonus DVD cover release to gauge interest.

As my health has gotten better, I've been kicking around doing a diary centered on RMW -- booking essentially MAW of the Northwest, but from the ground up, having to start at local and do initial hirings/firings and all of that. In this particularly diary, I would be focusing on the narrative aspects and less on writing match results -- those tend to be the most taxing for me to write -- but if I write shorter results [i've seen a lot of people who just essentially write the road agent report on the match] I think I could make the diary happen with some regularity and maintain it.
