<p>Fan Scorecard:</p><p> </p><p>

Texas Death Match for the World Heavyweight Championship: Jeff Hardy vs. <strong>The Unnatural {©}</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>I think this is going to be a curve ball, a very needed curve ball, as this has the problem that Wrestlemania had for years, and that is that because it is the biggest show where storylines reach their climax, is unlikely to see the heel go over in the main event, because they want people to go home happy with a babyface win, it actually took 15 wrestlemanias for a heel to go over on the main event, and it wasnt until the next year in wrestlemania 2000 that an advertised heel won the main event (as in 15 Austin and Rock turned during the match), and starcade right now is falling in that formula first with Van Dam getting the world title of the heel champion, and the next year Rey Mysterio and The Hardys getting the titles from the heel champions, and the fans expect Hardy to take the title of Dustin, and when the fans already know the result it takes away from the match, so if a heel must win who better than the son of a son of a plumber, who breaths WCW, and also I think the fallout is going to be more interesting, Hardy will get the title for sure in the future, but at this moment in time he isnt ready yet.</em></p><p> </p><p>

The Dream Match: "The Hellraiser" <strong>Steve Austin</strong> vs. Goldberg</p><p>

-If Austin wins, Goldberg is fired!</p><p>

-If Goldberg wins, Austin must join The Empire!</p><p> </p><p>

<em>Austin wins in a wild brawl, and in the end Corino fires Goldberg but WCW contracts him, also I predict Goldberg will turn face mid match, helping austin take out Corino and what ever is left of empire, taking them out of the equation, and continuing in a match, with a respect for each other, and who knows maybe even teaming up as a tag team in the future.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Rey Mysterio Jr.</strong> vs. Eddie Guerrero</p><p> </p><p>

<em>I actually have high expectations on this match, and that could be its downfall, this match could be an A* match, and it could be the best match in the night, but I actually hope its not, I hope its not, because the crowd could be burned out for the last two matches tanking the event, If they were closing that would be another thing, but they arent so I hope for the best for the event in general. </em></p><p> </p><p>

World Tag Team Championship: <strong>True Heroes</strong> vs. Mortis and The Destroyer {©}</p><p> </p><p>

<em>I remember when these championship main evented starcade last year, and I must admit there has been a lot of good matches in the tag division, but it has decreased in importance a lot, if with alexander I was doubtful, a shift in the defending champions could force a title change to not put in doubt any destroyer plans for the future, and the true heroes are what the tag division needs to be carried, Punk will main event as world champion in the future, but at this moment in his career him and storm are in the place they can do best.</em></p><p> </p><p>

United States Heavyweight Championship: "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson vs. <strong>Rob Van Dam {©}</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Van Dam isnt losing the title so soon, also with the fall of Empire, we need a heel group winning big tonight and I think the Dangerous Alliance is ready to take over WCW.</em></p><p> </p><p>

"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles vs. <strong>Sean O'Haire</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Nothing against Styles, but he is already established Main Eventer I feel O'Haire could benefit the most of these win, and this ties off with my Dangerous Alliance prediction for Starcade.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Jamie Knoble</strong> vs. King Corino</p><p> </p><p>

<em>If it wasnt obvious by now, I predict tonight Empire is going to end, maybe Corino and TAKA will stay as allies and as an ocassional tag team, but empire as we know it will end tonight and this loss will cause it.</em></p><p> </p><p>

World Television Championship: "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels vs. <strong>Matt Hardy {©}</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>I dont know if matt will make it all the way with the championship, to get a title shot, but I think you will want to build the drama and get him closer, by the time he is in the 9th defense I think it will be more difficult to predict, but I think Matt will make it to the 9th defense no less.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Cruiserweight Championship: TAKA vs. <strong>Chavo Guerrero Jr.{©}</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em> I think that TAKA could lose and Corino could cut all ties with him here, to signal the beggining of the end of empire, that by the end of the night will be a reality, also I hope chavo turns heel soon, so the Guerreros can challenge for the tag team championship.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Sting, The Shooting Stars, Hayabusa and Minoru Tanaka vs. <strong>Bobby Roode, The Jung Dragons, Brian Kendrick and "Sugar" Shane Helms</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Mostly balancing the Face - Heel wins tonight, this is a toss up, I wish Tanaka coudl win, but I dont see a clear winner.</em></p><p> </p><p>

UWA Welterweight Championship: Paul London vs. <strong>The Great Sasuke {©}</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Sasuke should win his first defense as a WCW star, and London is too green.</em></p><p> </p><p>

What will be match of the night? <strong>Rey Mysterio Jr. vs Eddie Guerrero</strong></p><p> </p><p>

How many championships will change hands? <strong>1</strong></p><p> </p><p>

TIEBREAKER: How long is the main event (minutes and seconds)?<strong> 33:42</strong></p><p> </p><p>

Finally... do you know how difficult is to read 167 pages on one weekend, I´ll give you a clue, a lot, but it has been worth it all the way.</p><p> </p><p>

Also, Im only commenting on this because it seems no one noticed it when it happened, but when you had a guest writter write summerslam, it was stated the PAUL HEYMAN, retired the European Championship and brought back the ECW Television Championship, when he had debuted for WCW like 2 or 3 months before summerslam, just an nitpick.</p>

<p>December 27th, 2003: News and Notes</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43035" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>December 27th, 2003</strong></p><p><strong> Greensboro, North Carolina--Hours before Starrcade</strong></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> "Nice hand," I said with a smile, pushing the remainder my poker chips across the table to The Great Sasuke. I'm not sure if he understood the words, but he definitely understood how to play poker. He'd set this entire tournament up to help everyone relax before the biggest show of the year, and he was also the current chip leader.</p><p> </p><p> I was fine with being knocked out early. I had plenty on my mind, and not all of it was about Starrcade itself.</p><p> </p><p> In the most recent Observing Wrestling, their business analyst declared that we'd officially overtaken WWE as the #1 wrestling company in the world. It was still by the absolute narrowest of margins, and some would probably still argue that WWE is the more established brand name, but it's a sign of how far we've come in the last two and a half years.</p><p> </p><p> I'm sure Vince would tell any reporter that he put no stock in such things, but I know him. He wants to run this entire business with an iron fist, and any threat of legitimate competition is something he wants to stamp out. He thought he'd won the war against WCW in 2001, but Ted Turner sold me the company at a heavy discount in one final act of defiance. Now here we are.</p><p> </p><p> I doubt Vince actually watches our programming, but one of his lieutenants must have told him about what we've been doing with women's wrestling. In his company it's just a sideshow, an excuse to send out some beautiful, scantily-clad women. Not only are we treating the women seriously, we've built an entire full-time brand around them. The cornerstone of the entire thing has been Manami Toyota.</p><p> </p><p> Has Vince ever seen Manami Toyota wrestle? Does he even know who she is? I doubt it. But he knows how important she is to us right now, so he wants her. Her contract is due to expire in late January, and I was expecting a pretty routine extension. Instead I'm in the middle of a bidding war, and the WWE is going all out.</p><p> </p><p> I'm doing everything I reasonably can to try and hold onto her, but they show no signs of backing down. At the rate we're going she could wind up among the top five highest paid people in the entire company--and that's only if we actually succeed in winning this bidding war.</p><p> </p><p> In 2001 WCW rose from the ashes and got back on track. In 2002 we became a legitimate player again, and in 2003 we once again stood tall enough to look Titan in the eye.</p><p> </p><p> As we flip the calendar to 2004 the war is back on in full force, and the first battle is over the best female wrestler on the planet.</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/7AiYO6E.jpg</span> </div><p></p><p></p><p> <em>WWE held their last big show of the year, Armageddon, on December 14th in Milwaukee. No title changes or other major newsworthy events to report, but they did present a pair of fantastic 99-rated matches to end the show on a huge positive. In the first, Kurt Angle wrestled to a no contest with Kane in their ECW title match (an ECW match ending in a no contest sounds kind of stupid, but whatever.) The finale saw Rock retain the WWE belt over Big Show. Thanks in large part to those two matches the show scored a great 95 overall rating, so the pressure is on for us to hit a home run at Starrcade. This ranks alongside this year's King of the Ring as the best WWE shows in years.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> Mick Foley signed a contract extension. Mick's a really charismatic guy, and I'll always appreciate the stand he took after what happened in Montreal. I'm glad he's getting paid, but I think he's miscast in his current role as a color commentator.</em></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p> </p><span>http://i.imgur.com/nUYCk9q.jpg</span> </div><p></p><p></p><p> <em>We signed LuFisto to a two year contract extension. I really like what the association with Hokuto has done for both her and Daffney.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> Takako Inoue is sticking around too under a one year deal. She hasn't been featured all that much of late, but she's one of the more well-rounded women on Renaissance.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> Kaoru Ito has signed an extension as well, though hers is only for six months.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> Towards the end of the month I signed developmental wrestler Mercedes Martinez to a one year contract extension. She's been under contract with us since we absorbed All Japan Women's in January 2002, and has blossomed into a really great in-ring talent. She'll probably be up on Renaissance before too long. </em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> A recent online article praised Alexis Laree as a potential breakout star in the future. We feel much the same way about her. </em></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i.imgur.com/syuSRKH.jpg</span> </div><p></p><p></p><p> <em>Really bad news here: Johnny Smith, who way back when was brought into Stampede as Davey's kayfabe brother and also teamed with Dynamite in Japan after the Bulldogs split, overdosed and was rushed to the hospital. It's quickly becoming a story that is bringing negative attention down on the company, especially in Japan where the culture is a lot stricter about drug abuse. Johnny's condition was critical but stable last I heard, so hopefully he makes a full recovery.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> In more positive news Shinya Hashimoto announced he was going to start taking bookings for All Japan. This is interesting for several reasons. Hashimoto is the owner, top star and World champion of Zero One. Z1 and All Japan have no formal partnership. Zero One does have working arrangements with New Japan and NOAH...both of whom have hostile relations with All Japan. The political workings of all of this are pretty interesting, but it's a huge addition for All Japan as Hashimoto will slot right in as one of their top main event stars.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> All Japan wrapped up their annual tag team tournament on December 6th. The all-star team of Keiji Mutoh and Toshiaki Kawada beat Genichiro Tenryu and Takao Omori to win the tournament. That's Mutoh's first time winning the tournament, and Kawada's fourth (the previous three all coming with his longtime partner Akira Taue.) That final received a rather disappointing 76 score, while an earlier tournament bout where Mutoh and Kawada beat 2 Cold Scorpio and Gran Hamada was much more well received (89.) Thanks to that lackluster main event, this was their second worst PPV of 2003. After a strong few months in the early part of the year, they've really dipped back down quality-wise.</em></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p> </p><span>http://i.imgur.com/HLY8nvy.jpg</span> </div><p></p><p></p><p> <em>NOAH held their last PPV of the year, Winter Navigation, on December 20th. Misawa didn't wrestle on this show, only appearing in an angle with Jun Akiyama and Chris Candido (though he did work a tag match on an episode of their weekly TV show that was taped the same day.) It turned out that they didn't need the founder in action to still put on a great show. Truthfully though, this was a below average show propped up by an excellent main event. The second best bout on the show, a junior heavyweight showdown between KENTA and Tajiri in the midcard, only got a 75 grade, while Akiyama retaining the GHC Heavyweight title over Yoshinari Ogawa got a 98 in the main event. But they delivered in the most important spot, so the show itself received an 89. That's just slightly below last month's Thunder of Heart, but it's still one of their better PPVs of 2003.</em></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="fOS5DO2.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/fOS5DO2.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> <em>It didn't take long for Alex Wright to find work. He announced he'd be heading to Zero-One barely a week after I released him. It's a guaranteed written contract too, so it seems he'll be working there exclusively. </em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> They didn't stop there when it came to signing ex-WCW guys either; they signed Brian Adams to his own written deal at the same time. </em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> Shuji Kondo also joined the company, also on a full-time gig.</em></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p> </p><span>http://i.imgur.com/ebDwXEW.jpg</span> </div><p></p><p></p><p> <em>Marty Jannetty announced his retirement. It's a shame that Marty never achieved his potential, but given his lifestyle and personal choices I don't think he has anyone to blame but himself. He'll always be 'that other guy from The Rockers.' At least he got a solid final two year run with WWE, but he hadn't been very visible since they allowed his contract to expire in May.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> Former WCW wrestler Devon 'Crowbar' Storm recently got married. I wish him the best. I wouldn't rule out a potential WCW return for him one day, though our roster is pretty full as is. </em></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p> </p><span>http://i.imgur.com/1eeVS9d.jpg</span> </div><p></p><p></p><p> <em>Koji Kitao has announced his retirement. Kitao was a famous sumo wrestler in the '80s who made yokozuna before being expelled from the sport in disgrace. New Japan signed him in 1990 and had big plans for him as a future star, but he had more problems there and was fired after an incident with Inoki. The big-budget startup company SWS scooped him up with similar hopes, but he had an infamous kayfabe-breaking match with John "Earthquake" Tenta that included him getting on the microphone after the match and saying that wrestling is fake. That was the end of his SWS run, though he did make some appearances years later with New Japan and WAR. He'd been working in Big Japan, but no one has booked him since they went out of business this spring and I guess he saw the writing on the wall.</em></p><p> </p><p> <hr noshade size=3></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> I've written up five matches from Starrcade, with six to go. It'll probably still be a bit before the show is completed, but this is most likely the last post I'll make before then. So if you want to get your predictions in, and especially if you're still in the running for the UFS, now's the time.</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-username="JMike" data-cite="JMike" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43035" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><p> General diary comments/questions/critiques: <strong>Man, I thought it was finally Jung Dragon tag title time. We opened up with a '20 years of Starrcade' video package, and the narrator was none other than the man who named the event, Dusty Rhodes. I didn't give Dusty a script to work with; I just told him to record a voiceover talking about the legacy of Starrcade for a few minutes and then had our production team put something together based on that. Dream did a good job with it, talking up the history of the event and the accomplishments of legendary names like himself, Ric Flair and the rest of the Horsemen, Vader, Harley Race, Sting, etc, while video clips showcased some of the highlights. It was too short to be something excellent that will stick in fans' minds, but I thought it was a nice way to pay homage to the past as we celebrate this major milestone.

The in-ring action started with the one match on the show that had no real buildup (aside from London winning a #1 contender's match against Volador Jr.) I didn't settle on the exact makeup of this match until pretty late in the game. At one point I considered adding several more lightweight wrestlers to it, possibly even turning it into one of our Cruiserweight Shootouts, but most of the other prominent cruisers were already on the card. Plus I don't like to book title matches where the champion can lose their belt without actually being beaten.

Both of these guys did okay here, but the match was hampered by the fact that they didn't seem to work all that well together as opponents. Their timing was off and there was some noticeable miscommunication and moments where they were out of position for the aerial stuff. The match wasn't terrible, but it wasn't all that good either. All in all, not really the way you want to start the biggest show of the year. Sasuke retained the title with his Thunderfire Powerbomb.

While Jeff is flying solo in the main event, the older Hardy brother had a big title match of his own. We made a big deal on commentary about the fact that Daniels had been allowed to rest and prepare over the last month while Matt was defending the title every single week on Nitro, and questioned whether that would allow the fresher Daniels to become the new champion. I allowed these two guys to call their match themselves, but maybe that was a mistake as it felt oddly paced. I could see what they were going for, with Daniels trying to wear Hardy down before trying to close things out in the latter minutes of the 15 minute TV title time limit, but it just didn't seem to hold the fans' interest as much as we would've hoped. The match itself was still decent though, and it succeeded in getting some reaction out of a crowd that had been kind of quiet during the opener.

True to form, Daniels kicked it into a higher gear once we got past the ten minute mark, seeking to hit a big move that would bring him his second singles title in WCW. Hardy kicked out of Angel's Wings, and was able to roll out of range when he went for the Angel's Descent. Fortunately for Daniels he spotted this just in time and was able to fully rotate over so he landed on his feet, so he went right back for the offense by yanking Matt back up to his feet for Last Rites. Matt spun through it though and snapped off the Twist of Fate. That was enough to give Hardy his 10th successful title defense, meaning he has the option to either cash out now and challenge for the US title, or try to make it to 15 defenses and the World Heavyweight Championship shot.

Arn Anderson joined Becky Bayless backstage for an interview. He mentioned that he had a lot of history at Starrcade himself, and he felt proud to have been part of this 20-year legacy. "But I'm not here just to live in the past," he said. "These past twenty years have been great, but I bet the next twenty years of Starrcade will be even better! The tradition that started on that Thanksgiving night in 1983 right here in the Greensboro Coliseum will roll on, stronger and stronger. And next year, the countless WCW fans out on the West Coast will get a late Christmas present when Starrcade rolls into the famous Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on December the 26th!"

Arn was good here in his understated role, and Becky was also good in support. But the segment wasn't over quite yet.

TJ Wilson and Harry Smith walked in to interrupt. Well, it would be more accurate to say that TJ walked in to interrupt and Harry was sort of along for the ride. TJ arrogantly predicted that by the time the 2004 edition of Starrcade was here, it would be himself and Harry, the Calgary Bulldogs, in the main event. "The Hart extended family has a legacy of greatness in tag team wrestling, and Harry and I are here to not only continue that tradition, but to take things to the next level!"

Arn, no stranger to tag team excellence himself, looked like he couldn't decide whether he was annoyed or impressed with the kid's confidence, but he wished them both luck and said they had a lot of work to do to live up to those words. TJ looked lost here; he probably wasn't quite ready for such a big speaking role on this huge show, and Harry was very underwhelming as the sheepish sidekick. But this is only the beginning for these two, and I'm sure it'll get better with time.

TAKA (w/Tammy Sytch) vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr.{©}

wZR2OGz.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/ncMyE2p.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/EiVoLiY.jpg0qRNVUJ.jpg

I wanted a quality fast-paced cruiserweight style match to start the show, and looking back I probably should have used this one. But there were other reasons I chose to put this match here, which we'll get to later. As for the match, I can say it was probably not the best idea to let them call it themselves without Steamboat or Bob Orton's assistance since it wasn't paced all that well. That's the only really significant negative to point out here though. Chavo might not be as charismatic as his uncle Eddie, but he's a fine worker and he showed it with a very good performance tonight.

But as good as he was, TAKA was even better. He might be in the cruiserweight division, but I think he gets a strong enough reaction from the crowd that he could easily be a main event caliber heel in the right situation (not sure he has the size to make it believable though.) He was excellent, doing some impressive flying but not going overboard with it, making sure not to overshadow Chavo so he could keep getting the desired heel reaction. This was a really good match, and it got the biggest reaction of anything on the show to this point.

The match was even pretty much the whole way, with Chavo stalemating TAKA's flying with a mat wrestling approach. That's where Tammy Sytch came in. Just as Chavo seemed poised to deliver a match-ending brainbuster, she picked that moment to climb up onto the apron and draw the attention of referee Mark Johnson. TAKA used that momentary distraction to thumb Chavo in the eye, after which a Michinoku Driver brought him his second cruiserweight title win (both of which have come at Starrcade, interestingly enough.)

King Corino clapped enthusiastically on his way down the ramp, and he patted TAKA on the back and raised his left arm in the air as Tammy raised his right, with the belt strapped around his waist. Corino backed away and grabbed a microphone to congratulate the new champion.

"You see? THAT is how The Empire operates! Things have been going sideways in this group recently, but tonight it all turns around! TAKA, a true team player who puts the good of The Empire ahead of his own desires, has brought the coveted cruiserweight title back into the fold, and unlike that dumb redneck Jamie Knoble, he's not going to be an idiot and volunteer to defend it against multiple opponents at the same time! Goldberg's been a major pain lately, but all will be forgiven once he gets his hand raised and brings us that cash cow Steve Austin! I can see the merchandising checks rolling in already!

"As for you, Knoble? You can't redeem yourself by bringing in a golden goose, but you still have value to The Empire. You just need to be reminded of your place, and it falls to me to do it, just like it fell to me to force you to stop being a lone loser and join our group at the beginning of the year. So just like I did at Sin, just like I did at SuperBrawl...I'm gonna show you who the king is!"

Corino shared a high-five with TAKA before the Cruiserweight champion returned to the back, while Sytch remained in Corino's corner for his match. All three members of The Empire looked good here, and I thought Knoble came across pretty well too as he made his entrance, looking determined. Tenay's announcing wasn't the greatest during the segment though; he got his segments confused and started saying Knoble would be free of The Empire if he won, but I cut him off and clarified that no such stipulation had ever been mentioned.

Jamie Knoble vs. King Corino (w/Tammy Sytch)

http://i.imgur.com/CCq92jB.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/EiVoLiY.jpgZZPLj6h.jpgwZR2OGz.jpg

One story element that maybe we haven't done the best job at reinforcing over the last year is that Knoble didn't initially join The Empire willingly, instead losing a match to Corino at SuperBrawl which included the stipulation that a loss meant he was forced to join the group. We talked about the parallel of that situation to the one Austin would face later in the night, but the bigger focus was on Knoble's personal struggle. He'd lost to Corino in January at Sin, and was desperate enough to agree to that ill-fated stipulation at SuperBrawl so he could have a second chance, but lost that as well. Would the third time finally be the charm?

This was better than their SuperBrawl match, but still well below that great original bout at Sin. Part of that was that the emphasis here was mainly on storytelling. The story was that Corino had a single-minded focus on beating Knoble the same way he'd beaten him the first two times: via figure four leglock. In fact he was so determined to do so that he refused to go for the pin even after dumping Knoble on his head with a piledriver. That hubris nearly bit him as Knoble was able to counter one figure four attempt into a small package for a near-fall, but Corino quickly put him back down with a lariat and went straight back to the figure four, this time succeeding.

At Sin, Knoble was forced to tap out. He didn't tap out at SuperBrawl, but couldn't escape the hold and had his shoulders pinned to the mat. This time he willed his way to the ropes and forced a break, much to Corino's shock. The match continued, and I was very nervous when Corino seemed to be limping after taking a bump (and no work had been done on his leg to sell, so it had to be legit.) He pushed through it though, and we made it to the home stretch. With the figure four having failed, Tammy decided to be a difference maker like she just had for TAKA. She caught Knoble's attention, opening him up for a blindside attack. But maybe Knoble had been hanging around the group too long and was wise to their tricks, because he stepped out of the way, forcing Corino to put on the brakes and avoid knocking Tammy out. That miscommunication was all Knoble needed to roll Corino up and grab the stunning three count!

"The Phenomenal" AJ Styles vs. Sean O'Haire (w/Paul Heyman)

ICMDAHo.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/EiVoLiY.jpgc5XJDHD.jpgdcrMvyP.jpg

These two met in the Semifinals of the Stu Hart Classic, and for an all-babyface match on Nitro it was pretty good. O'Haire is fully heel now with the backing of the Dangerous Alliance, plus this is the biggest show of the year so they weren't going to hold anything back. I didn't really need or expect a classic here; I gave them about sixteen minutes and trusted AJ to put the match together in a way that made both of them look good and resulted in a solid match in the middle of the PPV. The match he designed blew away my expectations. He made O'Haire look very good with plenty of spots that showcased his power, and did an awesome job bumping for him. That naturally built sympathy for AJ as the babyface, and he made the most of it. Styles was absolutely excellent as the smaller man working from underneath. His comebacks came at just the right moment, and his aerial stuff was sprinkled in when it would get the biggest possible reaction. This was an absolutely fantastic match and a huge showing for both men.

While Paul Heyman is an ever-present force at ringside during any Dangerous Alliance match, he seemed content to merely advise O'Haire and not get directly involved in the match. He had a wide smile on his face when O'Haire had AJ on his shoulders for the Widow Maker, but it was quickly wiped off when AJ swung his body around and turned it into a DDT. That didn't keep O'Haire down for long, but AJ was ready with a pinpoint dropkick to the chest. Even that only staggered the bigger man instead of knocking him off his feet, but a springboard forearm to the jaw finally got him down. Styles went up top and snapped off a beautiful Spiral Tap, and Nick Patrick counted once...

twice...

...and O'Haire didn't merely kicked out, but threw AJ off of him with such authority that he went flying across the ring! AJ looked stunned at the force behind that kickout after such a big offensive move, but he didn't let it affect him. He went out to the apron and tensed his body, keeping O'Haire in his sights. As soon as Sean was back up AJ sprang onto the top rope and flew at him to deliver another springboard forearm blow.

Except O'Haire caught him out of mid-air! And then, in an impressive display of strength despite the length of the match, he drove him into the canvas with a brand new move! We didn't have a name for it yet, but it spelled the end for AJ Styles.

We ran an angle that was "supposed" to be plugging the official Starrcade merchandise, but was actually an excuse to let Bobby Heenan and Colt Cabana do some comedy and lighten things up a bit. They had set up a small wooden table covered with a table cloth that had "shirts" written on it in marker, from which they were selling cheaply-made bootleg WCW merchandise. When the camera man came in for a closer look, Bobby shooed him away and tried to encourage a passing woman to buy from him. "Get your official Bob Van Dam shirts right here, half price!" he shouted.

I basically just did this as a buffer to give everyone a couple of minutes to breathe before the next match, and it served its purpose. The normally quick-witted Bobby struggled with his improv here though, and his gimmick has seen better days. Maybe we need to make some changes, something to make this pairing stand out a bit more.

"American Dragon" Bryan Danielson vs. Rob Van Dam (w/Paul Heyman) {©}

lAlFtSW.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/EiVoLiY.jpgP2oAF93.jpgdcrMvyP.jpg

This was the first match of the night that got a significant amount of time. I trust Bryan Danielson to call a great match, so I had no problem just letting them go out there and do their thing. Sure enough, Bryan paced this match perfectly. It started with him frustrating RVD with some solid mat wrestling and slick counters, but then the champion seized control with his usual array of kicks and unique aerial stuff. This was a match that was perfectly constructed to show off what each of these guys excel at, and the fans absolutely loved it.

I fully expected this to be a fantastic match, a showcase of what I want the modern WCW to look like, and these two did not disappoint. Bryan's work was borderline great, and with his challenger serving as the ring general and freeing him to do his thing, RVD's individual performance was the best of the night so far. This was the best match in Bryan's young career, and right up there with the best in RVD's as well.

The fans were into both guys, but we did get the desired reaction as Bryan made his late-match push. The crowd popped huge for the near fall when he cut RVD off on the top rope and hit a top rope superplex, and the majority of them felt deflated when Van Dam rolled out of the way moments later to avoid a diving headbutt. RVD dragged Bryan into position and pulled off his split-legged moonsault for a nice near fall, but Danielson ducked a standing spin kick and caught the champion with a dragon suplex! That got a one...

two...

...but RVD got the shoulder up at 2.9! The crowd energy remained at a fever pitch as they ran a spot where the two men met on the top rope and traded blows, with RVD eventually winning the battle and sending Bryan flying off of the top after a roundhouse kick to the head. Unfortunately Bryan's landing wasn't clean, and we could all hear him cry out in pain and grab his leg. RVD remained perched on the top for a moment, unsure what he should do, but Bryan and Nick Patrick gave him the okay to deliver his Five Star Frog Splash and end the match. This was an amazing showing for Bryan, but it was overshadowed for me by the concern that he might be about to miss significant time.

If you look at all the best tag team title matches since I bought WCW in 2001, they have one thing in common: the True Heroes. And sure enough, this was the best tag title match since July's Bash at the Beach, in which the challengers were...True Heroes. Destroyer more than admirably filled Alex Wright's shoes, looking great as he executed lots of power moves. Mortis was slightly better, not seeming to be at all thrown off his game by the change in partners. As for Punk and Storm, they were basically flawless. They're both word class wrestlers in their own right, plus they've always had good chemistry as partners and now have pretty good experience working together on top of it. If you ask me there isn't a better team in the world today, and they definitely backed that opinion up here. It wasn't on the level of the US title match that had preceded it, but this was still a great match.

Like we'd established in the buildup, the Salvation team had a different dynamic with Alexander being replaced by the bigger and stronger Destroyer. That was a big element in the story of this match, with Destroyer pulling off some impressive throws and also pooling his strength with the offensive creativity of Mortis to come up with some nice double team moves. But when it came right down to it, there was nothing in their bag of tricks that could make up for the bond and experience of the Punk/Storm duo. After turning Mortis into a non-factor with a combination superkick/dropkick, the challengers finished Destroyer off with the Heroic Finish and won the World Tag Team Championship for a third time.

Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Eddie Guerrero

http://i.imgur.com/ffZqipS.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/EiVoLiY.jpgJJHE89M.jpg

Heading in, I viewed this as one of the "big three" matches on the show. When I signed Guerrero I had his heel turn on Rey and this match in mind, though initially Eddie was going to be the champion and this was going to be the main event. Plans changed, but this was still one of the most highly anticipated matches on the biggest card of the year. With two pros on this level, I gave them next to no instruction. I trusted that they would know how to get their match over and have it all make sense within the context of the story we've put together, and they were able to do exactly that.

It would've been easy for them to either go all out to pull off every high spot they could think of, or turn it into a pure brawl based on hatred. Instead they did neither. It built slow, and it built well. Both guys were great here as they perfectly straddled the line between putting on a thrilling athletic wrestling match and making it look like they hated each other. They pulled off some of the same sort of stuff that wowed people in their Halloween Havoc match back in '97, but there was an added element of aggression, brawling and rough tactics, such as Eddie throwing Rey into the ring post and Mysterio following up a flying headscissors with some good old fashioned punches to the face. This match wasn't quite as good as the Danielson/RVD US title match, but it was still absolutely fantastic.

They did a great job at working the condition of Rey's knee (both the kayfabe attacks Eddie has carried out recently and his real surgeries in the past) into the body of the match. Rey moved gingerly early on, testing the state of his knee, and Eddie went after it early and often. But as the match wore on and Rey was able to execute without incident, he grew more confident and less tentative. Eddie did continue to try and target the knee when possible, but it became less a point of focus later on as Mysterio proved his resilience. Eddie abandoned his previous strategy and tried to finish him off with the Frog Splash, but Rey was too quick for him. He ran over, jumped onto the top rope right in front of him and snapped off a super hurricanrana for an eye-popping pinfall.

Before the ten man tag match could get underway, Ric Flair demanded the microphone. This was basically a chance for Ric to say whatever he wanted about the history of Starrcade, and he nailed it. Like only he can, he cut an impassioned promo about how much the past twenty years of Starrcade had meant to him.

"I've done it all at Starrcade! Right here in the Greensboro Coliseum on Thanksgiving in 1983, I stepped into a steel cage with one of the toughest SOBS to ever lace up a pair of boots, Harley Race, and I walked out the other side as the heavyweight champion of the world, WOO! In '84, Greensboro watched as I beat Dusty Rhodes up so bad in the Million Dollar Challenge that Joe Frazier had to stop the match! 1993, I put my career on the line against the unstoppable Vader, and I became the champion again! 1995, I beat you (pointing at Sting), Luger and Macho Man all in the same night! Starrcade is the granddaddy of 'em all, and the Nature Boy has been here right from the very beginning! NOBODY knows Starrcade better than Ric Flair! And the future of Starrcade is in good hands, because one day years from now when we look back, Bobby Roode is going to be mentioned right alongside the best of us! BANK ON IT, STINGER! WOO!"

Flair threw the microphone down at Sting's feet, and his longtime rival had to be held back by the official. Ric was on point here, making Starrcade feel important, getting over his own history, putting over Roode, antagonizing Sting and entertaining the crowd all at the same time.

I wanted this match here as a buffer between Guerrero/Mysterio and our huge final two bouts, and this cool-down match felt like it was even more necessary after how great the US and tag title matches wound up being. This was the only match on the show that clocked in at less than ten minutes of ring time, and I think it was exactly what we needed here. The match was perfectly fine, but it was here mainly to let the crowd relax and regain their energy (not to mention get all of these guys onto the card.)

I think we all have high expectations for Brian Kendrick's future, but he unfortunately was far from his best tonight. The standout performer was actually Kaz Hayashi and his aerial spots, but his teammate Roode wasn't far behind (though wrestling a much different style, obviously.) I'd say Kidman was the highlight from the face team, while the worst both on the team and in the match overall was Sting. Everybody has nostalgia for the guy, and with good reason. He's a legend, but his best days are far behind him. Kendrick hit the Sliced Bread on Teddy, and the heels kept the other faces from making the save.

After the match we sent it to the back, where Becky Bayless was with the Dangerous Alliance. The group was very happy about the way their night had gone, but said this was only the beginning.

"Take a look around you, Miss Bayless," Heyman said, indicating the three men standing in the background. "Look at the talent I have assembled in just a few short months. Already we have the United States Heavyweight Championship, but do you think we're stopping there? 2004 will be the year of the Dangerous Alliance, and no champion is safe!"

Heyman was his usual stellar self on the microphone here, really getting his group across as a force to be feared in the future. RVD was also good in his nonverbal role, just standing there with his belt and looking smug. Becky's performance wasn't up to par, but it didn't really matter. This was a great promo, and it successfully began the process of building the crowd excitement back up.

We put together a lengthy video package for what we're promoting as "The Dream Match." It covered both men's rises in the late 1990s and how a match between them was an ultimate fantasy showdown among wrestling fans. We also delved into the long buildup towards this match, which I think everyone could see was in the cards from the moment Goldberg returned to WCW at April's Clash of the Champions to screw Austin over in his match against King Corino. From there it was an eight month chase, with the Empire's boss (first Bischoff, later Corino) refusing to sign off on the match everyone wanted to see. Austin ran through every member of The Empire one by one, and when that wasn't enough to get him what he sought he took a different approach. He snuck into the ring disguised as a beer vendor and interfered during Goldberg's Quarterfinal match against Jeff Hardy, leading to him being knocked out of the Stu Hart Classic.

Corino still wasn't willing to make the match, but Goldberg forced his hand. Reluctantly, the boss of The Empire agreed. He threw in a major condition though, demanding that Austin agreed to join The Empire if he lost. When that was agreed upon, he raised the stakes for Goldberg as well by informing him that if he lost, he'd be fired!

Which icon will lose it all? Did Goldberg truly have no part in the plan to assault Austin on Nitro, or has his public tension with Corino all been a ruse designed to lower Austin's guard? All of those questions were about to be answered!

I'm not sure if it came across on TV, but the crowd in Greensboro reacted huge here. You could feel just how excited they were to see this match, and the video got them even hotter.

The Dream Match:

"The Hellraiser" Steve Austin vs. Goldberg (w/Tammy Sytch)

dIHv4ym.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/EiVoLiY.jpgoWRzmsy.jpgwZR2OGz.jpg

As the bell rang we did the classic staredown in the middle of the ring, letting the fans soak in the moment and ensuring we got plenty of pictures of that moment, ala Hogan and Andre at Mania 3. We were shooting for that sort of history-making feel. I guess only time will tell whether this match is remembered in that vein, but it definitely felt like a huge deal in the moment.

The place was electric when Austin struck first, throwing a closed fist at Goldberg's face. Goldberg retorted with a punch of his own, and a full-on fistfight broke out. That felt like a fitting way to start the action, but it wasn't necessarily a sign of things to come. Many might have been expecting a shorter 10-15 minute brawl here, but I worried that the match would've disappointed if we went that route. Instead we gave it a bit more time and told them to pace themselves so they weren't exhausted before the end. I think it was the right decision. Both guys did exactly what they needed to do here. Maybe this didn't feature the crisp technical wrestling and high flying that we saw in the US title match earlier, but it was every bit that match's equal in different ways. What they did, they did extremely well, plus the crowd was white hot for it all. Both Austin and Goldberg were just about flawless here, with Goldberg's size, strength and badass aura making him the perfect foil to go toe to toe with The Hellraiser. About the only negative point you could make is that the selling could have been better. Steve's still pretty good at it despite the neck injury that nearly ended his career, but it's always been a weakness in Bill's game and it was evident here. Still, that's only a very minor thing. Given Bill's limitations as a worker I'd say he overachieved here, and this match lived up to the hype.

After Austin won that initial strike battle he gave Goldberg some stomps in the corner and hit him with a running clothesline, but Bill stayed on his feet and shouted defiantly, trying to intimidate him. Austin went right back to the well for another clothesline, but this time Goldberg was ready and turned the tables on him with a spinebuster. That set up a period of control for Goldberg, who focused on weakening Austin's back with kicks, stomps, a bearhug, and several different slams, with a full nelson slam getting the first two count of the match.

Austin battled back with more fists, and uncharacteristically went airborne and connected with a flying lariat off of the second rope that knocked Goldberg off his feet for the first time all night. An elbow drop off the same rope brought Austin his first pin attempt, and when that failed he kept the pressure on with some stomps and a rear chinlock, only for Goldberg to power out and connect with a huge shoulderblock that sent Austin tumbling through the ropes. That was the cue for some action out on the floor, which saw Goldberg pick Austin up and ram his spine into the ring post, then drop him on the floor with a sidewalk slam.

Goldberg continued to dominate the match for the next several minutes with his overwhelming power, and recorded multiple near-falls with a military press into a power slam and a pump handle suplex, but the resilient Austin wasn't going to go down just yet. Goldberg measured him for a spear, but Austin got out of the way and Bill went shoulder-first into the buckles. That was only a temporary setback for him, but things got worse when Austin hit the Lou Thesz Press and then rained down numerous punches to the face. Austin saw his moment, booted Bill in the gut and went for the Stunner, but Goldberg blocked that and created some separation for himself by giving him a hard shove in the back. Austin's momentum sent him forward into an unavoidable collision with senior official Nick Patrick. Yep: the dreaded ref bump. You could feel the groans in the crowd, most of whom were savvy enough to know what was next.

King Corino came sprinting down the ramp, and he'd brought a steel chair with him. Goldberg, who had caught Austin with a superkick to the jaw after the ref bump, was the only man left standing as Corino hit the ring. Corino shouted "THIS IS OUR CHANCE!" and motioned for Goldberg to step aside so he could bash Austin with the chair. Corino stood in position, waiting for Austin to pull himself to his feet. As Austin started to stir, Goldberg stepped forward, placing himself directly between the two. An irate Corino screamed at him to move, but Goldberg shook his head. "THIS IS MY FIGHT!" he shouted, and pointed for Corino to get out of the ring. Corino glared at him, and they had a staredown for several seconds before he relented. Corino set the chair up on the floor and took a seat to watch the battle alongside Tammy Sytch. She tried to talk strategy with him, but he completely ignored her. His full attention was on the two men inside the ring.

Goldberg, having refused to take the cheap way out, set out to beat the man he'd been compared to for years on his own terms. He stood in the corner, waited for Austin to rise, and charged forward. This time the spear struck true, a crushing blow for Goldberg. This was his moment, and he knew it. He pulled Austin up to his feet and made a show out of setting up for the Jackhammer, drawing it out for the maximum crowd reaction. He powered Austin up into the air, showed off his strength and held him there for a long pause...then delivered a bone-crushing Jackhammer! A recovered Nick Patrick got into position and counted the one...

two...

THREE!

...but waved it off seconds later when he noticed Austin had gotten a foot across the bottom rope!

Goldberg couldn't believe it! He screamed, then went back to the corner and set up for another spear. Austin used the ropes to help him regain his feet, and when he turned around was met by a charging Goldberg.

...But Austin stopped him cold with a right handed punch to the jaw! After a few more punches he aimed a boot at Goldberg's gut, the usual setup for the Stunner. But Goldberg caught his foot and snapped off a dragon screw legwhip! Goldberg didn't spend any time trying to attack Austin's leg after the fact; he was going straight for the kill. He deadlifted him straight up into the air for a second Jackhammer!

Austin struggled and fought it, and came down on his feet behind Goldberg. He grabbed his shoulder to spin him around, straight into a Stunner! Austin rolled on top, hooked the leg, and got a one...

The applause from the fans continued and even intensified following the satisfying end of a match they'd been on the edge of their seats for, and Mike and I agreed on commentary that the match had truly lived up to all the hype. One man who wasn't satisfied by what he'd just seen was Corino. As the dust settled, he rolled back into the ring with the chair in hand. He'd been denied the chance to hit Austin when it could've brought him under Empire control. Now it was too late for that, but that didn't mean he couldn't take out some of his frustration on the weary victor.

Out of nowhere, Corino was struck down by a huge spear! Goldberg stared down at Corino in disgust, and then looked up at Austin. Wordlessly Goldberg stepped back to give Austin access to Corino. When Corino shakily got to his feet, he was greeted by a boot to the gut and a Stunner!

With Corino dealt with, Austin and Goldberg stood face to face in the center of the ring once again. After a long pause, Austin held out his hand. Goldberg stared at it impassively for a moment, then reached out and shook it!

The fans loved this every bit as much as the match. Austin and Goldberg were both great here, and the fans seemed thrilled to see Bill back as a face again.

Rather than jumping straight into the intros for the main event, we cut backstage where Jeff Hardy was with Roddy Piper. This may not have been an official Piper's Pit segment, but Hot Rod treated it much like one. He talked up the importance of this match, the prestige of the world title, the honor that goes along with being in the main event on the historic 20th anniversary of Starrcade. But he also mentioned the danger, the potential for long-term harm in a Texas Death Match, where the objective is to beat your opponent up so bad that they can't get back to their feet by a count of ten after being pinned or submitted.

Jeff acknowledged the danger, but said he lived for situations like this. He and his brother had always been at their best when the danger level was at its highest, when they were walking the tightrope without a safety net. Tonight he was going to embrace the danger, walk the tightrope and punish The Unnatural for his actions. And when it was all said and done, this North Carolina boy would make his family and friends proud by winning the World Heavyweight Championship!

After that we cut to a different area backstage, where Becky Bayless was standing by with The Unnatural. She started to ask him about the match and whether he regretted starting this whole conflict with Jeff, but he completely ignored her and walked off as if she hadn't said a word. It's starting to feel like we need to take Dustin's character in a slightly different direction to keep it fresh, but this was still a great segment all the way around.

This match had a tough act to follow. Some people felt that Austin vs. Goldberg should have gone on last, and after their performance we were going to need the absolute best from these two guys if we were going to see a main event good enough to match it. We needed it, and we got it. A match that's so heavily based on brawling wasn't necessarily playing to Jeff's strengths, but he turned in an excellent performance anyway. And as good as he was, Unnatural was a bit better. He knew the importance of delivering in this position, and he gave it his all. I gave him a finish and relied on him to put the match together, and he pulled it off. I wouldn't say this match conclusively outshone the semi main or the Danielson/RVD bout, but it did match them.

This match started out fast, with Unnatural racing across the ring and felling Jeff with a flying clothesline. Once he had him down he started punching him in the face and then slapped on a chokehold, knowing that Nick Patrick could do nothing about it in this match where there are no disqualifications. Mike and I remarked that we were seeing an enraged, brutal version of The Unnatural, one who was out to avenge his fallen "brother" Alexander. Jeff fought his way out with punches, then hit a sitout jawbreaker. Unnatural rolled out to the floor and finally unstrapped his title belt, but when he got to his feet Jeff greeted him with a baseball slide. That knocked Unnatural back into the barricade, and Jeff went to the top rope and flew straight at him. Unfortunately for Hardy, Unnatural got out of the way and he came down throat-first on the barricade.

Unnatural went on a roll after that, brutalizing Hardy in a number of creative ways around ringside. He picked him up and slammed him throat-first across the barricade for a second time, suplexed him so his back bounced off of the ring steps, and hit a back suplex on the floor. Hardy mounted a comeback that had Unnatural retreating onto the ramp, and he got the match's first near-fall with a sitout inverted suplex that drove the champion's front half down onto the ramp. He attempted to follow it up with a Twist of Fate, but Dustin spun through it and swiftly changed everything with Unnatural Selection on the ramp! He made the cover, hooked the leg, and Nick Patrick counted three!

That was phase one; now it was time to see if Jeff could make it back to his feet before Patrick reached a count of ten. Dustin went back into the ring and calmly sat in the corner as Patrick began his count, and watched on as the count hit six with Hardy not moving. He finally started to stir, but still looked pretty out of it as Patrick hit eight...

nine...Jeff on one knee...

...Hardy back up!

Unnatural pulled himself up and went back onto the ramp, planning to cut Jeff off before he could truly get his bearings back. He connected with punches that staggered Hardy and dropped him to one knee, and then returned to his "Natural" roots with a bulldog, driving Jeff's face into the ramp! He went for another cover, but this time Jeff got a shoulder up before the three. Unnatural, annoyed, climbed off of the ramp, threw the timekeeper out of his chair and claimed it for himself. He walked back onto the ramp, chair in hand, and took a swing...but Hardy thwarted that with a perfectly timed dropkick, sending the chair into Unnatural's face!

Now Jeff had his hands on the chair, and he swung for the fences, scoring with a (protected) shot to the face! He used his foot to roll Unnatural between the ropes and back into the ring, but it was not out of mercy. No, it was opportunity that motivated him, and he took the opportunity to jump onto the top rope and nail the Swanton Bomb! That got him the three count, and the countdown began!

Unnatural was dazed by the chair and now clutching his ribs in pain from the Swanton, and Father Isaac pounded his hands on the mat to urge him on as the count passed the halfway mark. It made it all the way to eight, but Unnatural used the ropes to pull himself up just before nine. He got no reprieve though, as Jeff hit a mule kick, then put him right back down on his back with the Whisper in the Wind. Another Twist of Fate attempt followed, and this time it was successful. A pin attempt would've been the logical follow-up, but that wasn't what was on Jeff's mind.

It was time for the ultimate risk taker to lay it all on the line once again. He dragged Unnatural back out onto the ramp, slammed him, then hopped off and rooted around underneath the ring. He came back out with a spare table, which he brought and set up on the ramp. After a few stomps for good measure, he lifted Unnatural onto the table and went to the top rope once more. The fans held their breath in anticipation, and Mike and I put the moment over on commentary. I questioned the intelligence of taking this chance, but Mike said that Jeff Hardy wouldn't be Jeff Hardy if he wasn't willing to risk it all. Either he was going to crash and burn, or his daredevil style that had earned the admiration of millions of fans was going to lead him to capture the most coveted championship in wrestling in his home state of North Carolina. Everyone held their breath as Jeff took his leap of faith...

...and came up empty! Unnatural rolled off of the table at the last split second, and Jeff's attempted Swanton Bomb sent him crashing through the table! It was academic from that point for Unnatural to cover whatever was left of Hardy and wait for Nick Patrick to make his ten count.

Except that's not what he did. He wasn't content to take the sure pin and win the match then and there. Instead he hauled Jeff up to his feet, dragged his motionless body off of the ramp, and positioned him on top of the steel steps. Nick Patrick admonished him, but could do nothing but watch as a defenseless Hardy received Unnatural Selection, his neck driven down onto the steps! Unnatural rolled him over on top of the steps, placed one hand across his chest and waited until Nick Patrick counted the pin. The ten count began moments later, but there was no drama to it. No one, not even Jeff Hardy, was getting up after that ending sequence. At 28:10, Unnatural's win became official.

As the bell rang, the aftermath of the carnage began to settle in. Matt Hardy came running down the ramp in street clothes, with the medical team not far behind him. They checked on Jeff, who was unresponsive. They took care not to move him too much as they put a neck brace on him and placed him onto a stretcher. Jeff was stretchered to the back, Matt right by his side and talking to him the whole way.

The rest of Salvation had joined Unnatural inside the ring, and the group watched the scene in silence. Unnatural looked really good here, selling his lack of emotion well. I don't think too many people expected a triumphant Salvation to be the scene that closed the 20th anniversary of Starrcade, but I think the moment was all the more impactful for it. Sometimes the hero loses the big battle.

A Goldberg/Austin vs True Heroes battle for the tag belts ala Brothers of Destruction in WWF would truly be epic. I know Goldberg is technically fired, but come on, that can easily be worked around. I really hope the injury bug didn't bite too hard as that could really hurt losing those 2 guys. It's been the hallmark of your return to writing though so get to juggling multiple messes, sir.<img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

<p>A great show, only marred by the Goldberg face turn not including him defeating Steve Austin clean to gain the latter's respect. <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

While I'm being light-hearted, I do think that was more of a WWF move to have Goldberg lose to get the handshake face turn / pat on the back deal. Granted, it's Bret Hart's WCW and he probably likes Steve Austin a lot more than he does Bill Goldberg so I just have to deal.</p>

<p>I just read through this thing from start to finish. I had read part of it before but I couldn’t remember everything. I always loved the Hitman growing up and I feel like you nail the character.</p><p> </p><p>

I fear that Rey has capped as others are shooting passed him. Which is sad considering how pivotal he has been. Not to say he won’t remain a big part of everything and I am sure he will. I was just hopping to see one of those nice big numbers next to his name in the national battles. </p><p> </p><p>

I have always been a big Dustin fan in real life. I hated the character Golddust but even in his last run in WWE he was extremely solid in the ring he just had a goofy gimmick. I hope he and Cody tear it up at all in. Is Cody around yet in save? </p><p> </p><p>

I am glad you are back.</p>

His main event against Rey Mysterio Jr. at Sin in January was supposed to be a one shot, a routine title defense on a B level PPV. Rey did retain as planned, but Dustin did so well both in the ring and on the microphone that he earned himself a much bigger role. I wound up pivoting to put the title on him in June. Even then it was supposed to be temporary, more of a transitional reign to further the storyline between Rey and Eddie Guerrero, but yet again Dustin took to the role so well that plans changed. Now he's still the champion heading into the new year after retaining his title in the main event of Starrcade, and his unbelievable and unexpected year has been rewarded with this honor. There isn't any one match you can single out from his year; he had so many great ones, from the standout TV match against RVD on Nitro in January that first made me rethink the plan for him to only be a temporary main eventer, all the way through the end of the year at Starrcade. Whether he shared the ring with high spot guys like RVD and Hardy, technicians like Guerrero, luchadors like Mysterio or powerhouses like Sean O'Haire, Dustin delivered the goods every single time. He's had a great 15 year career, but his unforgettable 2003 caught us all off guard. </em></p><p> </p><p> </p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43035" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Female Wrestler of the Year:</span></strong></p><p> </p><p> <img alt="LyKOnBY.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/LyKOnBY.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> <strong>Manami Toyota (WCW)</strong></p><p> </p><p> <strong>Previous Winners (since 2001):</strong></p><p> <em>2002: Chigusa Nagayo (GAEA/WCW) </em></p><p> <em>2001: Aja Kong (GAEA)</em></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <em>I would have been shocked if this had gone any other way. That's not even close to the output Manami Toyota had as the cornerstone of our Renaissance brand; we actually had half a dozen women aside from Toyota who ranked higher than Lita on this list. The highlight of her year was a fantastic 97 rated title match against her former longtime partner Toshiyo Yamada to headline our Grand Prix PPV in October. She was one of only two women to make the Power 100 (Devil Masami being the other), and has done everything we've asked of her in her role as the face of Renaissance. Their biggest attendance of '03, for November's Strike For Retribution show, did 16,236. They had three other events that broke the 10K mark, and in total they had 78 shows that did at least 1000. Things are looking bright for Zero-One, and now they've added WCW alumni Alex Wright and Brian Adams to their roster as well. Hopefully they have a better follow-up year than 2002's winner Michinoku Pro, who ran up so much debt that I bought them out in October. He is going to remain a big part of WCW for sure. Austin and Goldberg won't be around forever to carry the load in the national battles, and Rey (and Punk and Jeff Hardy) will become even more important if/when that happens.</p><p> </p><p> Dustin is extremely underrated I think. That early Goldust character could have been a miserable failure, but he committed to it and made it work. I'd like to watch that show, but it's the day after I move so I'm not sure if I'll be able to do it logistically.</p>

man, I'm rereading the entire 2003 year of this dynasty, and I'm reminded of so many things I completely forgot about, like the Jung dragons.

speaking of which, what's going on right now for guys like samoa joe, the Jung dragons, ROH, TNA home of mantaur, and wondering if dragon gate's gonna exist to fill the void left by michinoku pro.
