July 2001: Pre-Bash at the Beach News and Notes

Just heard back a few days ago from a current WWF wrestler. He accepted my contract offer and agreed to join WCW when his current deal expires. Vince made no effort to keep him, which doesn't surprise me considering how little they've done with him from the very beginning. That's Vince's loss and my gain, because he's damn good at his style of wrestling and I think he'll be a nice addition to our roster.

I also signed James Mitchell, who worked in the old WCW under the name James Vandenberg and then was in ECW as the Sinister Minister. This run should go much better than his first go round with WCW because I have plans for him.

Bam Bam Bigelow wrestled wasted, again, in his first match back from suspension. Having a drug problem is one thing, but this was the second time he'd put the guy he was working with at risk of being injured because he couldn't show up to work sober. That just isn't something that can be allowed to continue, so I informed him that we'd be terminating his contract immediately. He wasn't pleased; he called me a sell-out and a backstabber. His friend Shane Douglas was upset by the decision as well, but I had no other option. It's too bad though, because I think Bam Bam's still pretty talented and had some value for us.

I was really impressed with how well the impromptu team of CM Punk and Lance Storm worked together during their tag team match on Nitro. They have all the makings of a great tag team, should I choose to have them work together regularly.

On the flip side, Rey Misterio Jr. and DDP had a bit of a styles clash, and that plus the all-babyface setup made for a match that was well below what both of those guys are capable of.

Sting continues to impart his knowledge to his protégé Johnny Swinger. I saw him giving Swinger some tips on how to generate sympathy from the fans in the event that he turns babyface some day. Perhaps inspired by the Stinger, Ric Flair has taken on a protégé himself in James Storm.

Billy Kidman dropped Chris Candido a bit harder than he'd intended with that sitout spinebuster he likes to do, and the trainers had to tend to Candido's back afterwards. It was nothing serious, thankfully. Candido was back to full health just days later, but Kidman still caught some heat backstage for being at fault.

I've had some conflicting opinions on Steve Corino: Flair thinks his character and style won't catch on with our fanbase, but his old ECW buddy RVD has been putting him over as a natural on the microphone. Praise for Jamie Knoble was more universal, as not only was Flair impressed with a promo he cut on a recent house show, but Dustin Rhodes is apparently a fan of his work in the ring. Booker suggested that there might be more charismatic options for cruiserweight champion than Shane Helms, and Hugh Morrus is not a fan of Kid Romeo in general. The always opinionated Scott Steiner vocally criticized Yang of the Jung Dragons, saying that WCW fans don't want to watch his "flippy crap."

Shawn Stasiak came into my office to complain about his recent booking and requested a bigger role. Good luck with that, Meat.

Lance Storm has to be a popular man in the locker room these days, because in the last few weeks alone he's brought in some Canadian beer for the boys to try, and also prepared homemade pancakes for everyone before a show.

Over in WWF land, my fellow Dungeon trainee Chris Benoit had the biggest night of his career. He beat Rikishi in the first round, reigning world champ Austin in the semis, then Shawn's little buddy Hunter in the finals to win the King of the Ring tournament. For heaven knows what reason, Vince put a lackluster match between Big Show and Christian in the main event spot and it dragged the whole show down.

Chyna has re-signed. That surprised me a bit, after all the drama between her, Hunter and Stephanie. She's not someone I would've had any interest in acquiring even if she had become available, so it doesn't concern me too much.

Vince has put Al Snow and K-Kwik together as a tag team called Bad Habit. I can't say I know Killings too well, but I always liked Al and I think he's been pretty underutilized throughout his career. The WWF tag titles haven't actually been defended on TV since before I relaunched WCW, so I'm not sure what the point in creating new teams is. Vince has let that division fall a long way since the heyday of me and Jim, the Bulldogs, Demolition, etc.

Over in Japan, NJPW's head booker Riki Choshu put the IWGP Heavyweight title on the biggest rival of his own in-ring career, 47-year old Tatsumi Fujinami, making the title reign of Kazuyuki Fujita a short and forgettable one. This is the 7th title reign for Fujinami, who has really dominated that title historically considering no one else has won it more than three times. He's still an elite worker, but I'd personally be looking to get younger on top if I was Choshu.

'Homicide is on the rise' sounds like a terrible headline, but in this case it was an indy worker that journalists were referring to. Randy Orton, son of Bob Jr, also got some positive coverage recently for his work down in WWF's developmental system.

I think he also mentioned losing the passion for doing that when the mod squad aren't really focusing on that mod, like at all at this point.

That's part of it. The other part was a desire to play as an underdog and try to work my way up.

I like that Scott Steiner was kept strong, as WCW was pushing him as the top guy near the end. I am hoping for him to say more ridiculously outrageous things, such as the classic "Do you want to be mesmermized by the physical phenomenon?"

"Tony, he's got 'em all mesmermized!"

Another small adjustment I enjoy is Bobby Heenan playing the Gene Okerlund role. Considering in real life, Heenan was more than fed up with the WCW environment (and working with Schiavone), it makes sense that changing up his duties could possibly re-energize him. He would also be a natural at the position with his quick wit.

That was brought about mostly by Gene doing a pretty poor job on the first show. I do like Heenan in that role though, even if I can't contractually push him as anything other than a color commentator, which seems kind of silly.

Also, one other quick question: Do you have a figurehead, or are you still trying to find someone that fits the build?

No figurehead. There is one guy that the game thinks would be a good one who isn't overshadowed by anyone, but I've been led to believe that the figurehead is more of a long term position and would prefer to wait until someone a bit younger can reach that level.

Well since Bret seemed confused by the message and even commented that Savage had an almost equal career to Hogan it is stemming off RL timeline instead of TGAAB universe. This was just a inter universal message that was delivered.....or so I believe lol.

I like your writeup style for TV shows, it looks very quick and easy to handle. It's very easy to follow along too, and that is almost as important as you being able to do it whenever you need. Your portrayal of Bret seems pretty spot-on too, a skill that I wish I could do on command better like you seem able to. The only one I've done well with that is Vince. But I can hear the voice of "The Hitman" while reading this all in my mind, and that's a major skill.

It's definitely much quicker and easier than anything else I've done before. Hopefully I'm still getting the important information across even with the condensed style.

There are some really strong teams here, but none quite as strong as they were in TGAAB. Championship Pedigree in that universe were unstoppable no matter how one looked at it. Here, however, the teams seem a lot more balanced. In that vein, I would say that it's tough to overlook K-Nection's team, because it features Booker and Sting together. So that will be my pick.

Yeah, the teams in TGAAB were stacked, mostly because my roster itself was ridiculously stacked. Not nearly as much talent or star power to go around this time.

Well I kind of have to pick myself to repeat. Beejus is right my team was unstoppable and I was #8 seed back then too.

You were actually #7 the first time around, but still, Hogan and Ted together on the team picking second to last was incredible value.

Going to have to go with my team: Sin-free Society. Not going to lie, the main reason behind my team is for CM Punk to get a push, and the idea of Lance Storm and Punk being a straight laced arrogant tag team is heaven for me.

As this news post indicated: you were on to something. I didn't have any plans to use them as a team, but I'm rethinking that now.

This match wasn't just about getting the PPV off to a good start; we also advanced AJ's story here. Steve Corino sat in with Mike and I on color for this match, and spent the entire time criticizing AJ's in-ring style as the antithesis of old school, "real" wrestling. That was what he was supposed to do, but I think he went a little too far in that direction to the point that it made AJ and the match itself come across worse to the fans watching at home. That was the focus of the in-ring storytelling here, with O'Haire's raw athletic gifts being tested by the experience and ring savvy of the grandson of a plumber, who enticed him into making mistakes and capitalized to the fullest. He has a great look and he's charismatic, but as a wrestler I think he's average at best. He did nothing to change my mind here. He didn't have an off night by his standards, but his work was still mediocre. He's lucky his buddy Sting is still good enough to carry him to a solid match. It was pretty basic and they focused more on storytelling, with a match built around Luger offering these displays of respect and friendship that Sting wasn't buying. A Scorpion Deathdrop ended the match for Luger. <div style="text-align:center;">Grade: B- http://i.imgur.com/3b4L6vE.jpg</div> Buff was all oiled up and ready to go. He hit the ring to attack Sting. Luger didn't join in and tried to talk Buff out of it, but he made no effort to physically stop him. There were chops for Luger and Bagwell alike until they retreated to the back. Not a chance. While both of these guys are solid technicians and showed it in certain points here, this match was more about seeing who was going to be able to out-cheat the other. The ref had his hands full, with both guys punching, eye gouging, cheap shotting, using the ropes for leverage, etc. Basically anything you can think of, they did. I was afraid it might cross the line into something more comedic than we were intending, but I think Ric and Shane skirted that line pretty well. The fans embraced Flair as a face, cheering him on despite (or maybe because of?) his blatant cheating, yet booing whenever Shane did much the same. This match was similar to that one in some ways: telling them to engage in an all out brawl worked so well at Great American Bash that I had them do so again. The key difference obviously was the last man standing stipulation, so rather than going for pinfalls throughout the ringside area, they would hit big moves and build drama around whether or not they'd be able to get back up. This match wasn't quite at the level of last month's epic, but it was still very good and the best match on the show to this point. There were several good finishing teases, including DDP getting up at about 8 and a half after being struck in the face with a steel chair (though he protected himself well), and Kanyon using the ropes to pull himself up just before the referee could finish the count after a Diamond Cutter. Page set up for a Diamond Cutter on the ring steps, but Kanyon blocked, spun him around and delivered his Flatliner finish on the steps instead. That kept DDP down for the count and gave Kanyon a big win, but I thought this feud was a positive for both men. That set the tone for the entire match. Jeff would do everything he could to try and finish Rob off when he had him at a disadvantage, and would flee and play the coward whenever Van Dam made his comebacks. RVD was really in his element here, as the no dq rules meant that he was able to do a lot of the more intricate spots he was known for in ECW. RVD had things well in hand until Jeff stopped him cold with a groin shot. That led to Jeff grabbing his trusty guitar and taking a swing, but RVD ducked and hit a modified version of his Van Daminator using the guitar instead of a steel chair. From there he hopped up to the top rope, delivered the Five Star Frog Splash and won the match and the feud. We played off of the ending to the first match early on, with Rey catching some near-falls off of rollups. That angered Awesome, who aggressively threw Rey around with power moves and beat on him with punches. Mike looked a little sloppy with his execution tonight, including very nearly dropping Rey on his head on a gorilla press spot. Luckily Rey came out of the match unscathed, and they put forth a match about on the same level as their first one last month. The beginning of the end came when Rey dodged a shoulderblock off of the top rope, setting up a realistic-looking ref bump. After putting Rey down with a clothesline, Awesome dragged a table from underneath the ring and set it up inside. He took Misterio up to the top rope and lifted him up for a super Awesome Bomb, but Rey shifted in mid-move to turn it into a hurricanrana off the top, and Awesome crashed through the table! He's not technically a cruiserweight, but he was able to work that style without much difficulty. These guys had the closest thing to a traditional cruiserweight match on the show, with plenty of fast-paced and exciting offense. It wasn't the non stop high spot affair Helms had with Kidman last month, but they still worked a pretty good tempo. When Helms (accidentally?) poked Punk in the eye during a strike exchange, Kidman came out from the back to argue with Helms, calling him a liar for pretending that last month's low blow had been accidental. Shane insisted that this was all just one big coincidence, and Punk took advantage of the argument to catch Helms with a Devil Lock DDT to win the match and series for the Sin-free Society. Storm and Finlay got some time on the stick and talked about the technical skill of their team, which they said was second to none, but the focus was on the victorious Punk. "Cruiserweight, heavyweight, it makes no difference! Anyone who gets in my way, gets in OUR way, will find out why straight edge means I'm better than you!" Punk continues to get better and better at playing up his real-life straight edge lifestyle and using it to get the desired (negative) reaction from the crowd. These two had a great match to close out the Great American Bash, and I was hopeful they'd be able to do the same here. While Scott did mess up several times throughout with some poorly executed moves, I was still quite pleased with the outcome. Part of this was due to some strong work from Booker, especially on the mat. I've never seen him look so sharp in technical wrestling exchanges, and since Scott has his amateur background to rely on, that was a real strong point of this match. We moved away from the shoulder injury this time, leaving Scott free to focus on his usual array of suplexes and brawling. He worked over Booker's neck quite a bit, and it set up nicely for Booker to make his big comeback. He hit some forearms and elbows, slammed Steiner to the mat and went to the top rope for the Harlem Hangover. The move connected, and Nick Patrick counted once... twice... ...but Scott got a shoulder up! Booker stared at the ref in shock and frustration for a moment before pulling Steiner up and going for the Rock Bo--err, Book End, but Scott elbowed his way out of that predicament. He did an amateur-style go behind and snapped off a release german suplex, dropping Booker on his neck. Big Poppa Pump gave a little flex, then slapped on the Steiner Recliner. Thus began a dramatic struggle, with Scotty putting all his strength into pulling and twisting on Booker's neck until he had to quit, and Booker fighting with everything he had to try and make the ropes. After a long struggle, Booker's fingertips were inches from the ropes, but then Steiner repositioned him, dragged him back out towards the center of the ring and reapplied the hold. Booker had used all his remaining strength on that failed escape attempt, but still refused to submit. He eventually became unresponsive, so Nick Patrick did the standard arm check spot. His arm fell once... twice.... ...and a third time! New champion! (Plus a tied UFS series, meaning we'll see Steiner and Awesome against Booker and Sting in a tiebreaker tomorrow.) <div style="text-align:center;">Grade: B+ http://i.imgur.com/zAUQMDu.jpg</div> While Steiner celebrated with the title, Arn Anderson led a group of officials out to the ring to check on Booker. Good job at the main event getting the MOTN, and I know I picked Big Poppa Pump to win, but damn that was shocking. It ain't over, though, not yet by a long shot

Shocked at the Punk win, too, as well as the RVD win. I thought for sure RVD-Double J was going to last a bit longer. Great show, I really liked how well the UFS was incorporated.

July 2001: Bash at the Beach Wrap-up 24 hours removed from Bash at the Beach, and I was feeling pretty good. This makes three excellent PPV events in a row for us right out of the gate. There's a lot of work to do in rebuilding the tarnished name of WCW, but if we keep producing quality shows like this, word of mouth will go a long way towards accomplishing that. I'd only just finished discussing the match outline for the main event of next month's big PPV in Japan with Scott Steiner when my phone rang. My eyebrows rose when I recognized the number. <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43035" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>"Vince," I said casually. "Heya pal!" he said in that phony voice of his. "Is there something I can do for you, or is this purely a social call?" I deadpanned. "Can't I just want to check in with a guy who served my company loyally for thirteen years?" "No," I said flatly. There was no way he'd be calling me without a reason, and we both knew it. "Quite frankly, Bret, I called because I'm worried about you." This I couldn't believe. "As much as I'd like to hang up right now, I'm too curious to hear where this is going. Go on." "Well, I couldn't help but notice that you ran a pay-per-view last night." "Don't pretend like this was news to you. I read your quote in USA Today complaining about it." "Well can you blame me?" he asked. "Competing with us on Monday night is bad enough, though I can't really fault you for that since Bischoff started it. But not even Eric was petulant enough to air a PPV head-to-head with ours. That's just foolish business." "Was it foolish when you put the first Survivor Series head-to-heard with Starrcade purely to screw with Crockett?" I fired back. "That was a totally different circumstance," he dismissed. "You're still trying to dig yourself out of the hole Bischoff and Russo dug for you, and we're firing on all cylinders even with Rock off filming a movie. Why in the world would you schedule a PPV the same night as ours?" "It was the night that worked best for my scheduling," I said with a shrug, though obviously he couldn't see it. "Besides, I don't think our fans were at all disappointed with the show we put on." "Maybe not, though I'll have to take your word for it. Do you really think it compared to Vengeance though? Steve and Glenn had a top-notch main event, and I'd wager that Angle and Christian in the semi main was also better than anything you put on." He wasn't wrong. The last two matches on their show were both fantastic, and led the way for a card that was slightly more well-received than our own. I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of admitting to it though. "You've got some big stars there, no doubt about it," I conceded, but mainly so I could get a dig in. "It must be frustrating for your future son-in-law to be so low on the totem pole that he's gone to a no contest with Spike Dudley on two out of the last three PPVs." "Very funny, Bret," Vince said, though I could tell he'd like nothing better than to reach through the phone and strangle me. The feeling was very much mutual. "Hunter's a team player, just like you used to be. That's actually why I called. It's still not too late for you to return to the family." "You're not my family, and the answer's still no," I said. "We may not be a threat to you right now, but we're building momentum and focusing on the future. It might not be a month from now or even a year from now, but sooner or later you're gonna turn around and realize we're right on your heels." "I sincerely doubt that," Vince said smugly. "I just hope you don't wake up to that reality after you've already driven your company, and yourself, to financial ruin." He hung up before I had the chance to respond.</div></blockquote> Moving on from that unpleasantness... Jeff Jarrett has become a real backstage malcontent after losing to RVD on two straight PPVs. That's unfortunate, but I'm not going to apologize for making someone do his job. I heaped plenty of praise on Booker and Scott Steiner for their main event, and also thanked DDP for selflessly putting over Kanyon. I was a little leery about putting Punk over Helms so quick, but I think it worked fine since I had a logical way to protect Helms and use it to advance his story with Kidman. (C-) <div style="text-align:center;">Show Grade: C- </div> </div></blockquote> Japan is a great region for us. According to our metrics it's second only to the US itself as far as our popularity goes, and our deal with tv asahi to broadcast Nitro and our PPVs (not to mention the just-returned Saturday Night) allows us to reach a far greater audience there than anywhere else, the US included. Looking to capitalize on this, I went ahead with plans to run a PPV event in Japan titled WCW vs. The World. I took advantage of our partnership with New Japan Pro Wrestling to bring in several of their guys for this show, allowing them to use some of our guys on a few of their shows in compensation. I wanted to get a bigtime Japanese star to headline the show with Scott Steiner, and I don't think I could've done any better than Keiji Mutoh. Mutoh is not only a huge star in Japan with some recognition globally from his Great Muta days in NWA, but he's still an elite in-ring wrestler. I have very high hopes for this match. Each of the semifinal UFS series are tied heading into the PPV, and any of the teams could potentially advance to the finals here and now if they win both of their matches on the show. Satyr's Hopeful Few will send Ric Flair against Chris Candido, and we had Flair flirt a bit with Tammy to add some heat to that match. Then it will be a matchup of first round picks, as Kanyon wrestles Rey Mistero Jr. of the Dead Jesters. That match will present a chance for one of the teams to win the series, but it'll also be for Rey's United States title, what with him being a fighting champion and everything. Sting of the K-Nections takes on the Sin-free Society's CM Punk in what should be a very interesting match. Those guys had some strong verbal back-and-forths on Nitro, but now it's time to see what they can do in the ring. This is the biggest match of Punk's career by far, so here's hoping he'll be up for the challenge. After that it'll be Booker T continuing on his path towards a hopeful world title rematch as he wrestles Lance Storm. Lance honestly outshone Keiji Mutoh in their match on Nitro, so I think he and Booker could potentially steal the show. The trip to Japan couldn't have come at a better time for the tag team division, because we're pretty thin on credible challengers for Palumbo and O'Haire. Gedo and Jado obviously don't match up physically, but that's never been their style anyway so it shouldn't hurt the match. They've got tons of experience together and are capable workers, so this could be the best match of the NBT era. We pulled the trigger on the Shane Helms heel turn at the expense of Kidman, and the logical progression from there would seem to be a title rematch at the PPV. I did consider that, but I decided to take advantage of our trip to Japan and include the legend Jushin Liger for a three way championship match. Liger is still one of the absolute very best in the world, so adding him to the mix should give this a big boost. An angry Mike Awesome decided to take out the frustrations of his losses to Rey Misterio by assaulting another crowd-pleasing high flyer in Rob Van Dam, and it set up an Extreme Rules match between two guys who made their names in ECW. I wanted to feature the AJ Styles/Steve Corino story on the PPV, but I also wanted to get some other guys into the mix. Alex Wright and Fit Finlay were inserted, and then I decided to work a couple more NJPW guys onto the card. Hiroshi Tanahashi is still pretty low on the New Japan totem pole, but he's a really good worker already and shows tons of potential as a future star for them.
