<p>World Heavyweight Championship: <strong>"Big Poppa Pump" Scott Steiner</strong> vs. Booker T {©}</p><p> </p><p>

- Steiner wins but somehow Booker keeps the title; maybe an injury stoppage by the ref or something? Something that makes Steiner go crazy. You need to keep Steiner strong but Booker needs to cement his position on top.</p><p> </p><p>

United States Heavyweight Championship: Mike Awesome vs. <strong>Rey Misterio Jr.</strong> {©}</p><p> </p><p>

- I'd love nothing more than an Awesome victory here; but Rey Rey is strapped to a rocket and the underdog will steal the win here.</p><p> </p><p>

World Tag Team Championship: 3 Count vs. <strong>The Natural Born Thrillers</strong> {©}</p><p> </p><p>

- keep the belts on the Thrillers whilst you rebuild the tag division; no matter how green they are, they have more upside than 2 Count.</p><p> </p><p>

Cruiserweight Championship: Billy Kidman vs. <strong>"Sugar" Shane Helms</strong> {©}</p><p> </p><p>

- Stand back, there's a Vertebreaker coming through. Another win to solidify the new face of the division. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Sting</strong> vs. "Nature Boy" Ric Flair</p><p> </p><p>

- if this is truly the final match; then Sting must win.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Rob Van Dam</strong> vs. Jeff Jarrett</p><p> </p><p>

- no way the Chosen One wants anything to do with this match; RVD by count out.</p><p> </p><p>

Falls Count Anywhere: <strong>Diamond Dallas Page</strong> vs. </p><p> </p><p>

- DDP gets his win back but this ain't over yet; I'm still torn on this one.</p><p> </p><p>

Ernest "The Cat" Miller vs. <strong>Lance Storm</strong></p><p> </p><p>

- rebuild momentum and carry on up</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>CM Punk</strong> vs. ???</p><p> </p><p>

- not a chance </p><p> </p><p>

The action was pretty solid once the bell rang, with a story built around Miller throwing lots of kicks and Storm using a technical wrestling approach to target the legs and limit the effectiveness of those kicks. This, much like last month's cruiserweight title match, did its job as a good opening match to get the crowd excited right away. Miss Jones was surprisingly good here as she pleaded with Cat not to tap out to Storm's Sharpshooter, to no avail. Storm is a guy who should thrive in my WCW. I tried to counteract that with some commentary about the danger of wrestling elite competition with an existing injury, especially one that your opponent knows about and can exploit. I still think it was a good decision though. Not only did it offer a match that was distinctly different from anything else on the show, but Kanyon really seemed to excel here since brawling, the highlight of his in-ring skills, was at the forefront. Top rope moves, springboard attacks, pinfall attempt/counter sequences, dives to the floor; you name it, they did it. The problem was that the majority of Scott's offense works the neck, so the in-ring action didn't always fit with the intended story. This problem wasn't helped by my continued focus on the shoulder while doing color despite Steiner using mostly suplexes, clotheslines and slams. All of this was only a minor issue though, and not enough to truly drag the match down. The in-ring action was excellent and the fans were into this match from the beginning. Even if I think the match would've been even greater if we could've done a better job at telling the story we'd been building to all along, it was still damn good and a solid PPV main event, every bit the equal of the Misterio vs. Storm match from last month.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> Booker fought out of a fujiwara armbar (back to the shoulder!) and stunned Scotty with elbows to the face, but Scott sidestepped a Harlem sidekick that struck ref Nick Patrick instead. It's a risky but very visually impressive move, and I told Scott to work it back into his arsenal here and there on some of the bigger shows. He laid on top of Booker and had him pinned for much more than three seconds, but there was no referee to count it. <div style="text-align:center;"><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong>Observing WCW</strong></strong></span><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong> in June, 2001</strong></span></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p> Bret Hart made the best use of limited resources in World Championship Wrestling. In his first two months, "The Hitman" put over younger talent consistently in terrific technical bouts. He successfully refocused the company on a new product, while keeping fans interested with established main event stars. </p><p> </p><p> Bret re-invented existing stars within WCW at both WCW The Big Bang and WCW The Great American Bash. He continued to build around Scott Steiner and Booker T's feud, with the two headlining in a Title Defense at 2001's The Great American Bash.Bret extended the feud with solid booking that built the WCW World Heavyweight Champion and protects the challenger. The two stars put on a show in a masterful feud that continues despite Booker T's nagging shoulder problems. Booker T appears set to become WCW's figurehead after beating Big Poppa Pump at the Bash. </p><p> </p><p> Bret signed several fresh wrestlers and pushed new wrestlers. He signed several impressive talents to work in his new developmental facility. Most notably, "King of the Indies" Christopher Daniels and "The American Dragon" Bryan Danielson were signed. Other than CM Punk, Bret hasn't yet put over new signings in the ring on PPV. Steve Corino and Chris Candido have received significant TV Time, but aren't established in the main event. Corino, Candido, Punk and RVD have all received significant TV Time, but only Punk scored wins over serious competition. </p><p> </p><p> His decision to book Rey Mysterio Jr. to win the United States Championship exemplifies these trends. Rey was an established roster member, but not a star, under old WCW brass. While Rey Mysterio's stock rose under new leadership, he would not be considered a Main Event talent. Bret booked Rey Rey to win the title at WCW Presents The Big Bang. He had Rey Rey go over established talent Lance Storm twice -- once on PPV, and later on TV. Many avid readers will remember that PWI ranked Lance Storm the #6th best wrester in the world and the top guy in WCW in January 2001. Bret had Rey win with a roll-up on Mike Awesome at the Bash -- however, Mike got his heat back immediately. The match reminded many of when Rey beat Kevin Nash on WCW Nitro in 1999 -- Rey won with a flash pin, but the bigger Awesome got his heat back and more afterward. </p><p> </p><p> Bret built on previous talent and presented an improved show to fans at WCW Presents the 2001 Great American Bash. However, he's yet to bring new talent to the table. One wonders if he can truly challenge Vince with the same wrestlers who sunk WCW in 2000 & 2001. Bret put his own twist on WCW at both The Big Bang and at The Great American Bash. He didn't reinvent the company yet -- but he clearly is building something. Can he stay afloat with the old guard charting the course?</p><p> </p><p> Match of the Year (So Far): Rey Mysterio d. Lance Storm for the WCW United States Championship at WCW Presents The Big Bang, <strong><span style="color:#2E8B57;">B+</span></strong></p><p> Dud of the Year (So Far): Ric Flair d. Sting at WCW Presents the Big Bang, <span style="color:#9ACD32;"><strong>B-</strong></span></p><p> </p><p> <strong>Observing Wrestling "Impact Player" for WCW:</strong> Chris Candido. Bret gave Chris plenty of TV Time with his significant other, Sunny. Candido hasn't yet won major matches clean -- but his victories are more notable than any other new acquisition. His "power couple" with Tammy is one of few alliances in the new WCW. Bret appears to be building a faction around Candido, but right now, the grand alliance only contains Chris and Tammy. Will Bret re-form the Triple Threat, or did he plan to and plans fall apart? Shane Douglas has received a significant push, but was this "vestigial booking"? With Fall Brawl traditionally just two months away, no potential alliances have been created large enough to man the War Games match. These alliances were a WCW staple in the '90s: The Four Horsemen, The Dangerous Alliance and even The Dungeon of Doom fought in high-profile WAR Games matches and put the good guys in peril. Will Bret honor these traditions, or change course and discard the time-tested WCW trope? </p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43035" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Wanted to try my hand at a fan piece' date=' as I enjoy reading them in diaries. I like where you're going with WCW -- the writing has been exceptional -- however, I wanted to take a "contemporary" look at the company, so I wrote a more neutral analysis: Bret took over a failing brand, and many observers would be skeptical early on. Hope you enjoy. I'm not exactly sure if there is/what is the accepted protocol for these, if it breaks to much Kayfabe for Bret, I won't do it again.[/quote']</div></blockquote>

<p>June 2001: Great American Bash Wrap-up</p><p> </p><p> <em>I guess Kidman was so focused on getting ready for his match tonight that he ignored Bobby Heenan as Bobby tried to talk to him about something backstage before the show. All's well that ends well.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> Scott Steiner and Jeff Jarrett were both pretty unhappy about losing tonight, but Jim Duggan was downright furious. It was no secret that Randy was on the juice, but that didn't stop him from being one of the most heavily pushed and successful guys of the era aside from Hulk. Bro, had to read all of this after reading your past story. I was surprised that you chose to do a story via the POV of Bret Hart considering you were mentionin' Summer Of Punk an' all.

I think he also mentioned losing the passion for doing that when the mod squad aren't really focusing on that mod, like at all at this point.

<p>Annoyed with myself for missing the predictions, but the show turned out to be great! Another solid building block for Bret's new WCW, just wanted to leave a few comments. </p><p> </p><p>

I like that Scott Steiner was kept strong, as WCW was pushing him as the top guy near the end. I am hoping for him to say more ridiculously outrageous things, such as the classic "Do you want to be mesmermized by the physical phenomenon?" </p><p> </p><p>

The Punk push is very nice as well, it's cool to see him getting good grades this early in his career. The new guard is slowly building momentum, with AJ about to join up with Stacy Keibler, Corino cutting some awesome promos, Booker, Storm and Rey at the top of the card, and even Chris Candido getting some promo time. </p><p> </p><p>

Another small adjustment I enjoy is Bobby Heenan playing the Gene Okerlund role. Considering in real life, Heenan was more than fed up with the WCW environment (and working with Schiavone), it makes sense that changing up his duties could possibly re-energize him. He would also be a natural at the position with his quick wit. </p><p> </p><p>

The James Hill Easter Egg was something that I very much enjoyed. I'm wondering if this was just a small reference to your previous dynasty, or are you going to use The Golden Age as part of this diary's history? </p><p> </p><p>

Also, one other quick question: Do you have a figurehead, or are you still trying to find someone that fits the build? </p><p> </p><p>

Keep up the good work! I'll definitely be posting for the next prediction contest.</p>

This was just a inter universal message that was delivered.....or so I believe lol.</p>

<p>I feel like I haven't commented enough in here as of late, but I wanted to definitely take time to praise GAB. Not only because I got a really good score on it <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

I am guessing that Scott and Booker have more matches before this is all over, at least one at BatB. </p><p>

AJ Styles and Stacy Kiebler is a pairing I tend to make in any 2001 WCW game as well. Nice to know we are on the same page.</p><p>

Another thing that sadly is the same is Duggan. He always complains at me when I try to have him put over young talents. It looks like he could be gone by next pay per view if he were to keep that up.</p><p> </p><p>

I like your writeup style for TV shows, it looks very quick and easy to handle. It's very easy to follow along too, and that is almost as important as you being able to do it whenever you need. Your portrayal of Bret seems pretty spot-on too, a skill that I wish I could do on command better like you seem able to. The only one I've done well with that is Vince. But I can hear the voice of "The Hitman" while reading this all in my mind, and that's a major skill.</p><p> </p><p>

All in all, excited to read what happens in July!</p>

<p>June 2001: Ultimate Fan Series Preview</p><p> </p><p> <em>We just completed the first stage of what I think is a pretty unique idea. It's called the Ultimate Fan Series, where eight of our fans participated in an online draft in which they built a four-man team from our roster. Now it's up to me to analyze the draft results and start planning everything out and figuring out how to work these matches into our shows.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> Here's an abbreviated version of the rules we sent to the fans involved:</em></p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43035" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>After the draft is complete, we'll have an elimination tournament comprised of a series of four singles matches, with the highest seed matched up against the lowest seed in each round (so in the first round #1 faces #8, 2 vs. 7 and so on.) In the event of a tie after those four matches, there will be a tiebreaker match. In the first and second rounds, this tiebreaker will be a 2 on 2 tag team match; after each manager has completed their draft, they will indicate which two of their team members they want to represent them in a potential tiebreaker. If there is a tie in the final round, the tiebreaker will be a 4 vs. 4 elimination match.<p> </p><p> The manager who wins the tournament will be able to select one member of their team to receive a guaranteed world title shot over the next year, and they will also appear in an angle on a future show. The runner-up will get to choose a member of their team to challenge for any title in the company except for the world title.</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> <em>I've subsequently decided that the prize for the winning team will actually be a bit bigger. One member will still be chosen for a world title shot, but the other three team members will also be given shots at our secondary titles.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em> I've looked over the roster breakdown of all eight teams several times, and I'm no closer to deciding who's going to win. There are some really strong teams here, but none quite as strong as they were in TGAAB. Championship Pedigree in that universe were unstoppable no matter how one looked at it. Here, however, the teams seem a lot more balanced. In that vein, I would say that it's tough to overlook K-Nection's team, because it features Booker and Sting together. So that will be my pick.
